community relations. As we assembled this issue, viewing hundreds of images and selecting which furnishings, textiles and accessories to cover, I considered our remarkable design community, which we are fortunate to report on in the pages of this magazine. The scope of talent, craftsmanship, ideas and influence—from architects and builders, to decorators, manufacturers and showrooms—is pretty astonishing and exceedingly inspiring. We shine a spotlight on these creative forces in the community, and discover what turns them on when it comes to design and lifestyle in our new Insider department. Check it out, and then expand beyond our pages by heading to luxedaily.com where we cover the design community at large.

Clockwise from top left: P.E. Guerin: I toured this foundry and was blown away by the handcrafted workmanship and attention to detail. Schumacher: When I previewed Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s new collection for Schumacher…well, let’s just say my head is still swimming with notions of how I’d decorate with this cut velvet gem. Neil Denari: Architect Neil Denari’s influence reaches sky high, particularly in West Chelsea where his firm’s HL23 condo is firmly planted. celebrations. After a long hot summer we welcome fall. This is the time that we get back outside, enjoy the Arizona weather and entertain our friends and family.

We are already off to a busy season starting with the ASID North Chapter Design Awards, which were held in August. Congratulations to all of the contestants and winners! On October 19, Luxe will team up with the Scottsdale Design District for Fall Market Day. There will be incredible speakers at the 68th Street event and we look forward to a great day of learning about what is new and vibrant in design.

If you are in Los Angeles between December 4 and December 22, we invite you to see Maison de Luxe at Greystone Mansion—our show house featuring the nation’s leading interior designers. Discover more at maisondeluxeatgreystone.com

As we head into the holidays, I wish you all a happy and healthy season filled with laughter and wonderful memories.

Cheers,

ART WEEKLY Don’t miss the Thursday night art crawl in Old Scottsdale, especially during the fall season as the evenings start to get a little cooler. We look forward to visiting the galleries that contribute to our art collecting, including Bentley Gallery, Gebert Contemporary and Overland Gallery. Their staff, patrons and artists always make the evening special. scottsdalegalleries.com 2

SUNDAY TREK We set Sundays aside for hikes around Camelback where food stops are key. After working up an appetite, it’s brunch at T. FASHIONABLE ART When I want to get inspired, I drop by the Phoenix Art Museum, which has stunning Southwest art that really speaks to the Arizona culture. They also have a wonderful fashion collection, including pieces from Balenciaga, Chanel and Dior, which most people aren’t aware of. The museum’s architecture is gorgeous and very suited to the desert; it’s a pleasure to see modern inter-pretations in the Sonoran Desert. phxart.org

MACMILLAN’S MOUNTAIN For a delectable meal, I head to the Sanctuary Camelback Mountain. Executive Chef Beau MacMillan is brilliant. Get the cantaloupe martini with their delicious Korean ribs. The décor really speaks to me as midcentury-meets-current-modern. After dinner, head to the front lounge area, which is the perfect spot to take it all in. sanctuaryoncamelback.com 3

MOD WORLD Red Modern is an eclectic shop with a very New York “downtown” feeling right here in Phoenix. They carry a lot of vintage and midcentury modern with splashes of fun 1970s pieces. It’s a great source for accessories; I just purchased a timeless set of Dorothy Thorpe candlesticks that are to die for! Ask to see Robyn. redmodernfurniture.com 1

ROYAL TREATMENT I find the Royal Palms Resort in Phoenix to be very inspiring and a beautiful tribute to Southwest architecture. It feels like you’re entering some über-exclusive private estate—Arizona’s answer to Versailles! Located at the base of Camelback Mountain, the views surrounding the Royal Palms are so exquisite. Walk the grounds and take in the grandeur—you’ll notice something new every time. royalpalmshotel.com

ADOBE ATTRACTION A favorite architectural landmark of mine is an authentic adobe house designed by the late Bill Tull, who was commissioned by the Heard Museum to design a responsiblebuild home in the Sonoran Desert. His project greatly inspired my work with adobe. The walls steep in and out to create interest and the windows are set deep into the cavities of the walls forming long shadows. The window composition adorns the exposed adobe structure and draws you in desiring to see more. heard.org 3

RUSSIAN ACCENT When I feel the desire to treat myself, I visit Gallery Russia in Scottsdale. It’s an inspiring gallery and if I’ve recently landed a particularly large commission, I will most likely leave with a landscape painting. Otherwise, I just look and admire and try to pick up on new techniques that may help me with my architectural renderings. Scott is most helpful and is known for his expertise in the field. galleryrussia.com 1

PARK IT A great getaway is Garlands Oak Creek Lodge in Sedona. The grounds and structures are reminiscent of the early buildings of the National Parks, and are made of materials that comfortably fit the rugged landscape. A series of charming cabins are linked by gardens and a gentle rolling lawn invokes the feeling of a meadow. Trust me, the views from this lawn rival that of the National Parks! Make your reservation long in advance. garlandslodge.com

One thing in particular has remained since Hutton Wilkinson took over the late Tony Duquette's legacy: the jewelry is still fearless, as evidenced in Wilkinson’s new book Tony Duquette/Hutton Wilkinson Jewelry, due out this November. The lavish, unapologetic designs can be seen in all their extravagant glory in the gorgeous pages of Wilkinson’s third book. “Tony always said that the difference between animals and humans is adornment,” says the charismatic designer. “We each have to eat and procreate to survive, but how we choose to clothe ourselves is the true difference. That’s magic.” Magic, indeed. Organized by color and material, Wilkinson’s latest oeuvre showcases the captivating explosion of gems—all one-of-a-kind pieces—that is synonymous with the Tony Duquette brand. “This book was written to inspire individuality and creativity in others,” says Wilkinson. “It’s for anyone who aspires to pretty things.” abramsbooks.com

MUSEUM QUALITY When an artist is revered as one of the most significant painters of his time, there’s only one natural course of action: build a comprehensive museum dedicated to preserving his legacy. On November 18, the Clyfford Still Museum opens in Denver within a cantilevered structure designed by Allied Works Architecture, shedding natural and metaphorical light on an oeuvre that has largely never before been on public display. clyffordstillmuseum.org

The sleek exterior is a perfect fit for the modern, clean interiors by Danish designer Thomas Juul-Hansen. Adding to the narrative of the building, HL23 collaborated with April Magen, of Magen H. Martin Grubman, P.E. Guerin

Luxe sat down with longtime p.e. guerin fixture martin grubman for an intimate look at the history, philosophy and artistry behind the brand, started by master craftsman pierre emmanuel guerin when he left France for new york city in 1857, a cache of tiny chisels and hammers in hand. over 150 years later, p.e. guerin still stands in a four-story building on jane street whose simple façade belies the exquisite custom fixtures and hardware the company creates for clients around the world. the process remains much as it was when guerin himself first established his shop, and a visit to the foundry—the only one in existence in new york city—is akin to a trip back in time.

From historical reproductions to whimsical Flights oF Fancy, Fine decorative hardware Firm p.e. guerin FaithFully creates its handcraFted masterpieces just as its Founder did beFore the turn oF the last century.

HOW DO YOU PRESERVE THE gUERin HERiTAgE? it’s a family business, and always has been. guerin’s great grandnephew, andrew ward, runs the company, and we maintain a staff of about 60. many come to us as apprentices. the process is the same as when guerin was creating his own pieces. we still use his original tools—some are even older than the company—and when one breaks, we repair or recreate it ourselves. it’s not like we can go to the hardware store and replace it. the molds are handmade using patterns from our archive; we have an entire room full of them, stacked in boxes and on shelves from floor to ceiling. there are probably 100,000 different designs.

WAlk US THROUgH THE AcTUAl PROcESS. every piece in the shop is created, start-to-finish, by hand. we cast exclusively in sand—we go through about six tons a year—and each mold can only be used once. an impression is made in the sand using a pattern, or an actual model, and the metal is poured into the sand. that produces a raw casting, which gets hand filed and braised before going to a finish filer who smooths and refines it. after that it goes to a chaser, or chiseler, who uses chisels and hammers to re-delineate the design. the piece is polished and sent back to the chaser for more detail and texture—that’s what gives it its life-like nature—before it’s polished again, plated and patinated.

HOW MUcH cUSTOM WORk iS DOnE? a lot. one time someone came in and said, “i love hippos. can you make me a hippo faucet?” and i said, “sure!” someone else came in and said, “can you make me an elephant doorknob?” it happens all the time and no matter the request, we find a way to do it. every goofy thing you’ve ever heard of, we’ve made it. we collaborate with designers, architects and historians. guerin’s original work can still be seen in the hall of records and the villard houses in new york city, and in many historically significant buildings across the country. more current work can be found in the new york city public library—that was a restoration commission—tom Ford’s store on madison avenue and in museums.

DiScUSS YOUR cOMMiTMEnT TO cRAFT. there’s a character inherent in metal that can only be achieved by hand. you cannot accomplish it through other means. i analogize it this way: a machine-made sweater is perfect and looks just like all the other machine-made sweaters. but a handmade sweater—while not perfect—has a quality that draws you to it. it’s the same with metalwork. a hand-chased fixture possesses detail and personality and breaks up the light in a way that’s incredibly appealing. you just want to touch it. it’s a tactile aspect you get from something created by hand that you just don’t get when it’s made by a machine.

Finnish architect Alvar Aalto blended sleek, contemporary lines with tongue-in-cheek ingenuity when concepting his classic Paimio chair. Inspired by Marcel Breuer’s iconic Wassily Chair, the Paimio is deliberately crafted using native birch, which underscores its organic form.

By modernizing the shape, adjusting the height and adding a lacquer-like finish, their fresh-feeling take allows for a luminous glow to settle over its onlookers. For designer Eduardo Garza, there’s more to art than simply fashioning together creative ideas: Only after ethically sourcing and personally selecting all the materials that encompass each one of his pieces does the design process begin. Precious metals, stones and other natural elements of the highest quality are then manipulated into striking objet d’arts, such as this vibrant amethyst accented in white gold leaf and cradled by a gilt base.

FIVE MINUTES WITH …

BERKLEY VALLONE , DESIGN DIRECTOR FOR VALLONE DESIGN

With a portfolio spanning traditional and timeless designs to fresh, whimsical and modern spaces, Vallone Design has been creating beautiful and customized interiors for the past decade. Here, Vallone tells us a little about this unique Scottsdale showroom.

items we have in stock have been collected over time and travels to various places around the world. Our unique finds range from blue velvet Louis XVI armchairs, to statement pieces like an oversize clock extracted from a tower in England and 19th-century Louis Vuitton trunks.

Natural Progression: Opening the showroom came about from wanting to buy things for our design projects that didn’t necessarily have a home yet, but they were all things we had to have. It’s a daily resource for not only our clients, but for our design team, as well.

Bespoke Touch: If an item wasn’t collected from trips abroad, flea markets or purchased from the top antique dealers and suppliers, it was ordered from one of the manufacturers we represent in the shop. We try to specify the items in unusual finishes and fabrics or customize the details of the pieces to ensure they are something you won’t see in another store. vallonedesign.com

Landscape designer Jason Isenberg stands in the outdoor shower he created for his Tucson home. Opposite: Making the most of his home’s outdoor space, Isenberg outfitted his own backyard with a sunken patio complete with a vegetable garden, built-in bench seating, dining area, wok burner and a cooking-serving area for entertaining.

With a degree in ecology and evolutionary biology—along with minors in math, physics and chemistry—Jason Isenberg is not your typical landscape designer. Though he focused on plant genetics while at the University of Arizona, after graduation, the self-proclaimed science geek “didn’t want

Plants for the Southwest in Tucson is one of Isenberg’s go-to spots for succulents and cacti from around the world. The blooming Trichocereus cactus hybrid below is a new specimen the nursery hopes to offer soon.

to work in a lab.” Instead, Isenberg, who has a deep-seeded passion for all things environmental, turned his attention to gardening. “My guess is,” he says, “I was attempting to capture a piece of my hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, and the memories I have of gardening, canning and pickling with my family. From there, my appreciation for the outdoors flourished.” Today, Isenberg works toward his goal of “making sustainability sexy” with his urban organics company Realm, where he offers sophisticated and responsible solutions for outdoor living that appeal to a broad audience. “We’re pulling people into these spaces,” Isenberg says, “and having them connect with the seasons using elements that are not only inviting, but responsible.” realmenvironments.com; 520.791.9131

great outdoors

JASON ISENBERG Greatest influences: In landscape design, I’d say Jim Pollack. His limitless creativity and generosity are a rare combination. Otherwise, I’d say my grandfather, who, way before it was fashionable, cared about natural resources.

Favorite design sources: Metal scrap yards, Belle Époque Upholstery and local farms such as B & B Cactus Farm and Plants for the Southwest.

Design icon: Tom Kundig. His architecture combines raw natural materials and industrial elements into perfect structures that either interface directly with their surroundings or purposely contrast with the adjacent setting.

Current project: We’ve been working on quite a few pool repurposing projects. Instead of being saddled with an unwanted pool, we’ve engineered a system of reclaiming the surface as usable space while utilizing the already excavated sub-surface for hidden water catchment to be reused by the homeowner.

Diane Egizii, left, and Sharron Saffert bring glamour to the outdoors with their sleek, handcrafted pieces. Opposite: The exterior grounds of On the Veranda include beautifully-appointed vignettes, such as this one with a zinc-top dining table and upholstered chairs.

In Phoenix, where the climate allows for outdoor living nearly year-round, Diane Egizii and Sharron Saffert, co-owners of On the Veranda, are adding drama and magic to exterior residential spaces with iron patio furniture

Like all the furnishings offered by On the Veranda, the graceful curves of this sling chair—Egizii and Saffert’s version of a French garden chair—has a hand-forged iron frame and is customizable.

and one-of-a-kind accessories. “We really celebrate handcrafted pieces,” exclaims Saffert. “Nothing comes off an assembly line; it’s all hand-forged.” Their Phoenix retail space at the foot of Camelback Mountain features a 13,000-square-foot garden full of outdoor vignettes accented with wisteria, architectural ornaments and espaliered apple trees. And when Egizii and Saffert aren’t globetrotting to find treasures for the shop from places like France, Belgium and India, the designing duo is working with clients and landscape architects and designers across 27 states, often customizing not only the dimensions of their pieces but even the upholstery. “Outdoor space is so prominent,” says Egizii. “Whether it’s a kitchen, patio, barbecue or bocce court, it’s our arena.” ontheveranda.net; 602.955.8690

Personal style: SS: I’m a romantic and very eclectic. My home is filled with treasures, most of them unique objects that pull at my heartstrings.

“I’ve been told that I’m the best kept secret in the Southwest, growing a vibrant forest in the desert,” says Carol Alleman of her enchanting museum-quality bronze vessels. A self-taught artist with a degree in art education, Alleman didn’t discover her affinity for clay until taking a

community class in the mid 1990s. After moving to Tucson in ’94, she began digging her own clay out of the desert and creating pieces inspired by nature. To give her vessels a longer life, Alleman began using the lengthy lost wax process to cast them in bronze, which imbues them with an ever-evolving patina that she appreciates for the way it mirrors nature. Over the past decade, Alleman—whose work has been exhibited from Tucson to Washington, D.C.—has earned a loyal following, particularly among devotees of Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, although she is quick to share the credit with the highly skilled team who helps bring her designs to life. “I call them my ghost artists,” Alleman explains. “Together we do fabulous, incredible and profound things.” allemanstudios.com; 520.622.6377

Work approach: The whole creative method is a very soulful, quiet inner process for me.

Design period you find most engaging: There are few periods that I don’t have some fondness for! The way I live is very eclectic for that very reason, although I’m very drawn to certain Arts and Crafts, French Provincial and contemporary pieces.

I’m reading… Long Walk to Freedom, by Nelson Mandela and also A Spring Without Bees: How Colony Collapse Disorder Has Endangered Our Food Supply, by Michael Schacker. It’s an extraordinary book.

Most people don’t know: That I have a wonderful sense of humor. Because my work is so serious, I think there’s an expectation that I’m very serious, too, so people are often surprised to find that I’m a lot of fun! luxe interiors

WHOLE GRAINS It’s sometimes easy to get lost in the sleek, minimalist lines of contemporary design; there’s something inherently soothing and appealing about a blank, uninterrupted surface. The drawback, however, is that there’s a very thin line between clean and sterile, and the team at Ornare had to tread it carefully. So, they paired the super modern cabinetry of their new Satyrium series with reclaimed wood on the walls and table and carefully sourced antique light pendants from Brazil to bring a warm, lived-in feel to this contemporary-meets-organic kitchen. “The idea was to give the space a real human element,” says Claudio Faria, director of Ornare Miami. “All of the natural woods make the straight, sharp shapes of the cabinetry more comfortable and homey.” A custom-made range hood and plenty of wine storage courtesy of GE Monogram coolers work to introduce a bit of stainless steel to the otherwise matte finishes used throughout, while illuminated shelves pop against their wooden backdrop for an unexpected touch.

“It’s important that every kitchen be highly personalized, from the layout and the location of the appliances to the accessories that line each drawer.” Claudio Faria, Ornare Miami Miami, FL

CLEAN WASH Nature calls—literally—in this bathroom by Dion McCarthy, Mark Kirkhart and Andrew Alper, of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara-based DesignARC. Pocketing glass doors slide away to create a seamless transition between indoors and out, offering a stunning view of the reservoir in the distance from the cozy contours of the Agape bathtub. “Absolutely every part of the room has a view of and a strong relationship to the outdoors,” says McCarthy. “We let the site dictate the texture and color palette, which brings a nice organic quality to the space.” It’s a quality that is carried through to the knotty wood bench and chair and the interesting metallic-inspired finish of the glazed, porcelain shower tiles by Tau Ceramica from Stone Source. While the bathroom is purposely spare to keep the focus on the unique materials and panoramic vistas, the designer is careful to point out how much the space accomplishes with its less-is-more credo. “It’s not the kind of minimalism you see in a museum,” says McCarthy. “There’s an effortless accessibility to it that speaks unabashedly to and about the human body.”

“I try to include a small piece of nature in all of my designs. It’s crucial to create some kind of refuge, especially in the midst of the din of city living.” Dion McCarthy, DesignARC, Inc. Los Angeles, CA

PHX ArcHitecture The award-winning team at PHX Architecture encourages clients to think big when it comes to their luxury commercial, hospitality or residential needs. Not in the square-footage sense, but in the realm of possibility. In addition to bringing a combined 72 years of thoughtful, dynamic design experience to the PHX brand, principals Erik Peterson, Nikal Conti, Scott Carson and Jeff Innes bring a shared desire to deliver dreams. To that end, PHX does everything it can to understand and execute a vision for its clients—from walking the site to encouraging client wish lists to creating 3D computer models, sample boards and scale models so that everyone involved is comfortable with the project’s direction. The PHX commitment to details doesn’t stop with its client communication; the team also incorporates regional materials—local stone, plants and building materials—in projects that span the West, including California, Hawaii, Nevada, Texas and Utah. Whether creating a hip boutique project on a tight budget or a grand over-the-top space with generous funding, PHX promises a smooth process, deliberate and efficient design and premium value for the dollar. Their goal, quite simply, is to create a happy client. When you have a happy client, they’ll tell you, the rest is easy.

woodworking Wood ExprEssions, inc. Long before he began creating signature cabinetry and furniture for discerning clients throughout Arizona and beyond, Dave Potter was just another high school student taking shop. With one notable exception. Even then, Potter saw the possibilities of working with wood. “My wife likes to talk about the romanticism of the products we produce, and it’s true,” Potter says. “There is an artistry to hand-crafted work; I’ve felt that from the beginning. But what we create today is definitely different—I’m not making birdhouses anymore.” Instead, Potter and his team of master craftsmen are producing one-of-a-kind works of hand-carved art—from contemporary kitchen cabinets to rustic entertainment units to transitional bathroom decor and much more. Wood Expressions, the company Potter launched in 2005, leaves no part of the process to chance, handling design, manufacturing and finishing inside its 20,000-square-foot facility in Phoenix that features state-of-the-art and eco-friendly automation to quickly turn projects while maximizing each piece of alder, cherry, walnut, sepele or other exotic woods. “Our customers understand that we are not only skilled artisans, but we are delivering a product that isn’t overpriced,” says Potter. “We design to fit per house, per product and per client—but, most importantly everything we do is to fit the needs of our customers.”

“There are wants and there are needs. We give our clients both.”

FEATURES: The pyramid design on these chic buffet doors not only adds glamour to the room, but the shapes infuse an ordinary cabinet space with movement and softened angles that draw the eye and create interest.

FEATURES: Design Directives utilized an eye-catching blend of exotic woods, hand-cast glass and natural lighting to make a bold statement in this contemporary powder room.

q a q+a

What led you to your current profession? I’ve always enjoyed working with wood. I remember shop class and how it brought together geometry and problem-solving in such amazing unison.

What are the main determinants in your creative process? The clients. Every project comes to life because of the individual needs and personality of our clients.

What are the key influences in your work today? Relationships, outstanding products and customer service. I know we have met these objectives when the client comes back again and again.

FEATURES: The specialists at Wood Expressions incorporated varying styles of wood and copper to bring warmth and dramatic ambience to this sleek, contemporary Terry Kilbane home.

FEATURES: Going green has never been easier or more aesthetically pleasing. Echo Wood is environmentally responsible and a product that Wood Expressions often recommends to its clients.

builder FHP Builders Since launching FHP Builders in 2004, owners Greg Hartman and Casey Fromm have made it a point to understand the lay of the land in markets throughout the metropolitan Phoenix area where their luxury residential projects reside. That appreciation continues to distinguish FHP through its use of indigenous materials, including adobe, that blend seamlessly with dramatic Arizona landscapes. “To us, adobe represents the ultimate building material here in the Southwest,” Hartman says. “When we combine that with native stone, we’re creating more than just an imitative style. This is Southwestern architecture, pure and simple.” The advantages of adobe, a combination of clay and aggregate manufactured near the Salt River and utilized by FHP’s in-house masonry team, extend beyond its aesthetic appeal. The dramatic adobe estates built by FHP have unmatched durability and natural green properties. “Adobe homes have 16-inch-thick walls,” Hartman says. “That solid mass will heat during the day and release the heat during the evening. You might not immediately recognize the difference, but you’ll certainly feel it.” In addition to providing such a unique specialty, Hartman and Fromm take a hands-on approach with their residential and commercial projects, providing detailed accounting and scheduling, as well as daily communication. “Our work is not only authentic to the site, it’s also authentic to the owner,” Hartman says.

“Our goal is to see a proud client take not just ownership of a house but of their dream.”

480.607.2488

FEATURES: The exposed adobe interior of this living room in Scottsdale demonstrates the rich texture of native authentic adobe.

FEATURES: Built for architect Clint Miller, the Northern Arizona cabin makes use of native stone from the site and fits perfectly into the landscape of Arizona’s forests.

q a q+a

What are the main determinants in your creative process? Successful projects, creatively and economically, evolve from this team approach of solid communication between the client, architect and builder.

What are the key influences in your work today? FHP has been influenced by the native architecture found in the Southwest and Mexico. Materials such as adobe represent that architecture in an authentic way.

Which projects have brought you the most satisfaction, and why? We completed an adobe home in North Cave Creek, utilizing native stone from the site, that appears to be growing from the canyon hillside.

FEATURES: This North Scottsdale luxury adobe home achieved a superior score on the City of Scottsdale Green Building program and is timeless in its Arizona desert setting.

SPECIAL ADVERTIS ING SE CTION

FEATURES: This remodeled home maintains the spirit of its original owner’s memories by maintaining authentic materials and style with updates worthy of its Paradise Valley location.

FEATURES: This North Cave Creek home was built to exemplify the character of architecture in the West’s national parks. It makes use of native stone from the site, exposed adobe and a rusted metal roof.

builder Hillis Bolte luxury Builders As their consistently satisfied clientele can attest, Jeff Hillis and Mark Bolte bring more than just a combined 30 years of experience to the business of luxury home construction and custom remodeling. They also bring a passion for the work that has been stirring for as long as both can remember. “At age 10, I built a three-story fort out of lumber and plywood,” Hillis says. “It even had plush carpeted floors.” Today, the principals at Hillis Bolte Luxury Builders bring considerably higher-end projects to fruition—but with the same contagious enthusiasm for the process, no matter how difficult. “I became a contractor because I enjoy a challenge—and the more challenging the project, the more excited I become,” Bolte says. That’s not always easy in today’s economy. However, Hillis Bolte continues to distinguish itself by finding budget-conscious solutions without diminishing the level of quality and creativity. “It’s easy to work with a large budget,” Hillis says. “Delivering high-end work with more restricted budgets is the true test of value and talent.” It’s a tribute to the talent at Hillis Bolte that clients not only describe the company in terms of its attention to detail and communication but also its integrity. “We’ve been told that our systems provide a very transparent view,” Bolte says. “That results in a level of confidence in our company that is unique to the industry.”

How do you define a successful project?

What are the key influences in your work today?

How do you think your clients would characterize you?

Clients begin with expectations of how their home will turn out. We believe a successful project is one where the expectation exceeds what the client had imagined.

While pricing has become more important in this economy, clients don’t want to sacrifice quality. We try to create the most value by working to find alternatives.

Clients always comment on our creativity. Also, that we’re highly enthusiastic individuals who are willing to go the extra mile required in the luxury home market.

designer ownby design It’s no secret to her clients, co-workers or fellow professionals that Claire Ownby thrives in a collaborative atmosphere. Whether exchanging ideas early in a project with architects and builders, or inviting input from clients, the founder of Ownby Design has earned a reputation as the ultimate team player. Then again, what team wouldn’t benefit from the innovative mind of this award-winning creator of clean, intimate and sophisticated spaces? Since launching her firm in 1998, Ownby has specialized in turning the ordinary into singular design statements. “The number one factor in the design process is the client’s lifestyle needs and style preferences,” says the graduate of Arizona State University, whose team handles residential projects in Arizona and Hawaii. “Once this is determined, I allow the architecture and natural surrounds to guide the creative process.” Her keen eye and sense of detail has been honed and enhanced through her many travels, during which Ownby continues to find inspiration in the way other cultures embrace their environments. That appreciation extends to the use of organic materials and a shared sense of eco-responsibility, a thread that runs throughout projects by Ownby Design. Such passion has been recognized time and again by the American Society of Interior Designers, including a first-place award for Design Excellence in 2009 and Designer of the Year honors in 2007.

What are your favorite types of styles to work on and why?

How do you think your clients would characterize you?

What are you working on next?

Overall my work tends to be transitional in style. However, I work on projects that vary from modern to Mediterranean. The one common factor is the simplicity in the end result.

Pragmatic and diverse, yet extremely creative. Since I am usually the project lead, I’m able to wear different hats through the process while working with the team.

I am starting a seventh phase for a client that I’ve been working with for five years. We started with a bathroom and have worked our way through three of their homes.

FEATURES: Ownby Design was hired to furnish this Spanish Mediterranean home in Whisper Rock. We used warm colors with clean lined furniture pieces to balance the highly detailed architectural elements that were already there.

FEATURES: This desert mountain home was a modern approach to Spanish architecture. The neutral palette offered a backdrop for the client’s collection of both old Spanish art and modern canvas pieces.

FEATURES: The Old World charm of this Estancia mountainside home was not what caught the eye of its owners; it was the view. We downplayed the more formal architecture with detailed modern furnishings which presented a more contemporary feel to the home.

designer Rochelle Rubin Design ResouRce The best compliment Rochelle Rubin ever receives is at the end of a project, when a client says, “‘I love it. It just feels like me,’” says Rubin, who, with 38 years experience, has come to the conclusion that “client satisfaction— not awards—are the real helm of a successful business.” A former fashion designer, Rubin has a strong background in textiles and color, relaying these skills into eclectic, bordering on contemporary, designs that speak to her artistry and the client’s desire for comfort, beauty and livability. “I like to come up with ideas the client never thought about, but are still within their comfort zone,” says Rubin, who, for example, likes to add striking pops of color throughout a home to give it a dose of unconventional flair. “I approach color by the way it affects people’s moods and well-being. If a client leads a very busy, stressful life, they need soft colors to lighten the mood and distract from the daily hustle and bustle. Conversely, when people lead sedentary lives, I like to add pops of color to energize and inspire.” Such a methodical, colorful approach has earned Rubin an unparalleled reputation, all from word-of-mouth buzz. “All of these years, my business has grown solely through referrals from happy, satisfied clients, many of whom have gone on to become close, dear friends.”

FEATURES: To fill a large living space, Rubin uses shapes to the room’s advantage. Via the repetition of curves, semi-circles, smooth round edges and curvilinear accents, the room exudes a sense of openness while still possessing borders and definitions.

FEATURES: While Rubin enjoys creating modern designs, she does so in her own way. “I add touches that are personal and have meaning— whether it be a cactus indicative of the client’s environment, works from the client’s favorite artist or pops of vivid colors that add life.”

What are the main determinants in your creative process? I spend a lot of time listening to my clients and really getting to know their relationship with their families, how they live and spend their time.

What are you working on next?

How do you think your clients would characterize you?

We do a lot of vacation homes. One in particular is an Oriental theme that we’re melding with the desert. We have designed a variety of rugs and fabrics, which are used in unusual ways.

They would say I’m very talented, efficient and go above and beyond expectations. They would also say I come up with ideas they never thought of themselves.

FEATURES: Modern wood ceilings, rugged bricks, contemporary patterns and an intermix of textures contribute to a sophisticated design program that is difficult to achieve without years of experience.

FEATURES: Determined to add a spin on the conventional movie theater room, Rubin incorporated a beautiful mural of backlit fused glass, light colors, rich textures and plush seating—to really go the extra mile.

FEATURES: Always one to push boundaries, Rubin decided to give her clients the kitchen of their dreams and make it a happy, upbeat place they would feel good in. “I mixed a bunch of different colors together, taking a risk. The result was worth it.”

they knew their plot wasn’t the most desirable and wondered whether he could turn it into something special. “I had to take them up on a ladder to show them what they had,” Robinette says about the hidden vistas he discovered. “The trees and the mesquite were the only things blocking the views.” Although most of the houses in the development are traditional, the owners wanted something with a crisp, contemporary edge. Robinette created an inside-out hidden gem that comprises three rectangular forms—one glass, one metal, one quartzite—that live and breathe the desert aesthetic. Each form has a function. private living quarters; the quartzite box contains the guest suite and service laundry; and the glass box cradles the living area. “It’s sculptural and simple,” Robinette says. “It’s designed to capture the beauty of the site and be as open to its surroundings as possible.” The front of the one-story house cuts into the canyon, which was quite a feat. “It looks 100-percent natural,” says builder Scott Koktavy. “We had to build up the back eight to 10 feet to nestle it into the canyon and provide space for the yard and home. The most challenging aspect was hauling off soil and building the huge retaining walls and fill.” The natural setting flows to the back of the home, where a waterfall spills into the swimming pool. “Using the existing stone face, we sealed and diverted the water down the face of the cliff,” Koktavy says. “It’s one of my favorite features.” Interior designer Lori Carroll used a neutral, earthy color palette in furnishings and finishes to bring the outdoors inside. “The owners weren’t bringing any furniture from their previous home, but they have an

Each of these spaces is defined by architectural installations: The fireplace anchors the living room, a custom buffet marks off the kitchen, and a pedestal table, bolted to the floor, delineates the dining room. To ward off the intense desert heat, Robinette surrounded three sides of the airy great room with a covered porch to shade the home and added clerestory windows to bring in more light from above. “There’s no direct sunlight in the space,” he says.

For the floor-to-ceiling fireplace, whose flames are visible inside and out, Carroll created a surround from deep chocolate porcelain tiles. Their shimmering bronze accents turn them into sparkling spirals that reflect the diffused sunlight. The owners say the house is perfect, whether it’s just the two of them watching a sunset or a whole crowd relaxing in the backyard spa. “It gives us everything we want,” says the husband. “It has spectacular architecture, it’s tranquil and private, it has incredible views—you can see the Santa Catalina Mountains and Mount Lemmon—and it fits perfectly in the setting.” L

For Woodbury, who had taken a liking to a house with a similar aesthetic in Arcadia—the Phoenix community built in the 1940s where she resides—going with a French scheme was the easy part. The challenge? Transforming her beleaguered house, where “pretty much everything needed to be fixed,” she says. But, according to builder Jeff Gatewood, fixing things wasn’t the answer. “It was a typical old ranch home with exposed brick and flat eight-foot ceilings, with not a lot worth saving,” he says. “There were no interior bearing walls, so we took it down to the concrete slab and started over.” Gatewood, along with architect Vivian Ayala—who was working under her own firm, Estudio-V, at the time the house was updated—chose synthetic stucco walls and a wood shake roof for the revamped exterior. “We pitched the roof to instill a European feel,” says Ayala, who added dormers, shutters and copper accents to reinforce the motif. Inside, beams in the now 14-foot ceilings add character, and the new dormers flood the kitchen with natural light.

Boasting more square footage than any room in the house, not surprisingly, the kitchen emerged as the center of the home. “We added a large island that acts as the kitchen table and it’s where homework gets done,” says Woodbury, a single mom who shares her residence

For the dining room table, the designer relied on archival pictures of English trestle tables to create an updated version that easily seats eight. “We went custom because it’s increasingly difficult to find European tables that are long enough and wide enough for contemporary lifestyles,” says Lyon, who surrounded the table with a mix of Louis XVI-style side chairs and custom tufted high back end chairs. In addition to desiring a grown up space where she could entertain, Woodbury wanted her home to be as kid-friendly as possible. “I’m not a mom who says you can’t eat in the living room, or won’t let the dog jump on the sofa,” she says. Lyon responded by incorporating reclaimed wood and old brick floors, stain-resistant Sunbrella textiles on the living room sofas and nearly impervious CaesarStone countertops in the kitchen. “Everything in the house is bulletproof,” she says. “Those brick floors can take a beating, even red wine won’t stain those counters and if you spill on that Sunbrella fabric, you can clean it up with soap and a brush.”

Intentionally less kid-resistant is the master suite, where script printed from old French documents was silk-screened and painted on glazed linen to create the custom blue-and-gold bed and pillow coverings. “It’s her retreat,” says Lyon, who added an antique chandelier over the tub for a feminine touch. For Woodbury, like any busy mom, having a personal getaway space is wonderful, but so is having a place that she defines as “charming, simple and peaceful,” where the whole family feels at home. L

They began dreaming of the home they would build in Silverleaf, a private enclave tucked into the canyons of the McDowell Mountains. Her thoughts harked back to time spent in an old farmhouse in the Italian countryside that she loved for its warm, rustic feel. So the couple recruited architect Dale Gardon to design a home that would replicate the look and appear as though it had been built over time. “The house wraps around itself a little bit, so you can get out to certain vantage points and look back at the architecture,” Gardon explains. Though the exterior would be a vast manor broken into pieces that gently sprawl the foothill, the lady of the home pictured a cozy, inviting interior. “We love to entertain, and we wanted people to be able to kick off their shoes and feel at home,” she says. “That’s how we

The house took four years to build, and while there were obstacles along the way—like getting those old wood beams to behave—the homeowners say it’s exactly as they envisioned it. “Those four years were about the journey we had with the team, and we had a lot of fun,” says the wife. “We worked so well together and that’s really what it’s about; the people who worked alongside us to make it happen.” L

change often requires giving up the old, familiar and comfortable in order for something new to take its place.

But the owners of this Scottsdale residence, who

got the opportunity in 1998 to acquire an acre next to their existing lot in the Paradise Valley country club they call home, jumped at the chance to switch it up. The couple wanted to build a new residence in the center of both lots that had the look and feel of their Coronado, California, pied-à-terre—a renovated Mediterranean-style carriage house. “We wanted it to look like it had originally been a much smaller house that was slowly added onto over the decades,” says the wife. To get a better sense of the vibe the homeowners were after, architect Don Ziebell flew out to California to look at the house and, in particular, a loggia the couple had added to the structure. Along with Ziebell, the

beam me up The new construction home gets much of its been-there-for-centuries feel from the antique wood beams running throughout. Custom armchairs slipcovered in Brunschwig & Fils toile provide ample seating, while an iron chandelier and carved stone fireplace—reclaimed from French châteaux—adorn the space.

couple assembled a supporting team that included interior designer Karen Rapp, builder Jerry Meek and design consultant Jim Smith of Serving the Nation. Together, they tackled the challenge of making this new home appear as though its stucco walls and tiled roof had been there for centuries. To accomplish that, the couple traveled with Ziebell and Smith on a buying trip to the south of France to select authentic materials to be used in the building process, such as reclaimed roof tiles, stone fireplaces, antique terra-cotta floor tiles and ancient wood ceiling beams. The handpicked materials are similar to building elements that would have been used hundreds of years ago when French and Spanish explorers first discovered Arizona, mentions Ziebell, who, along with

project architect Gene Kniaz, designed the house using modern-day technology with old-world construction methods in mind. To accomplish this, Meek created a solid, cooling structure for the house from Rastra insulated concrete forms, a material made from recycled Styrofoam and concrete. It’s a contemporary, energy-efficient and sustainable answer to original methods such as clay or stone, Ziebell explains. A series of spectacular loggias reflect the couple’s love of casual, outdoor living. “How they use those spaces in their vacation house helped us refine each gallery here and give it a distinct feeling for this home,” says Ziebell, who created an open upstairs loggia accessible by an exterior stone staircase that allows distant views of mountains and city lights at night. Radiant heating under the floor keeps things warm in winter, as does a 13th-century stone fireplace reclaimed from a French chateau.

open table Because the homeowners entertain frequently, a substantial dining table was a must. Discovered in France, the 19th-century antique table, surrounded by French reproduction chairs from Dean-Warren, seats 14. A Persian rug from David E. Adler anchors the space.

comfort food The kitchen is stocked with a 16th-century French cupboard to the right of the soapstone sink and a custom island fabricated by RyssoPeters. summer breeze To satisfy the homeowners’ love of the outdoors, architect Don Ziebell designed a series of loggias, including this space off the family room, which provides shade from the Arizona sun and welcome breezes. A custom wicker sofa by Maudlin in La Jolla, California, beckons guests to convene for casual gatherings.

kitchens in Provence that the couple had seen throughout their travels. Spacious loggias off the living, dining and great rooms accommodate extra party guests when the couple entertain. A state-of-the-art irrigation system cuts watering needs by half in the gardens themselves, where the homeowners nixed de rigueur cacti for a careful ensemble of grasses, citrus trees and granite gravel. Inside, antique furnishings, plaster walls and a neutral color scheme help reinforce the rustic, Mediterranean feel of the architecture. “The owners were very clear that this wasn’t to be a showplace. Furniture styles span the 16th to 20th centuries, and everything is tied together by lustrous, well-loved woods and laid-back linen and cotton upholstery. A signed 1898 Brunswick pool table purchased from a collector in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was made 100 years ago to the date the couple purchased their new land and is considered a good luck charm for them. “We were seeking a certain level of authenticity and naturalness,” the husband says. “The way I describe it, the house is the body and the furniture is the soul.” L

ROYAL TREATMENT Malaysian-born fashion designer Zang Toi is a household naMe aMong red-carpeT favoriTes,

HigH Style It’s fitting that Zang Toi’s fashion atelier is dubbed “House of Toi.” It is, after all, where the designer crafts his luxury couture collections that, unbeknownst to many, bear striking similarities to his Upper East Side pied-à-terre. “There’s an element of glamour that shows in both my home design and fashion line,” Toi says. Inspired by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, Toi tested his creative prowess when he set out to revamp an early-20th-century apartment with preciously detailed antiques and opuFashion veteran Valentino created these peep-toe pumps with raised black embroidery atop cream leather to mimic a lace finish. lent textures. Much like his runway creations, it’s the well-articulated details—silver leaf, crystal accents, a two-tone palette that was implemented to mimic the appearance of a black and white photograph—that define Toi’s work. When asked what the fashion equivalent is to his home, Toi says, “I see it as a glamorous black and white gown with silver beading, worn by a modern-day Marie Antoinette.” houseoftoi.com

Trend Spotted: Fur-trimmed pillows and any type of furnishing with mink trim are so chic right now.

Crafted with solid carved beechwood and a caned back, the curved silhouette and distressed finish of this chair evoke classic French sophistication. Arpege, price available upon request; roche-bobois.com

Muse: My spring 1997 collection was inspired by the Madame de Pompadour room at my favorite museum, the Frick Collection.

Prized Possession: My museumquality bed that was designed by François Linke, an eminent Belle Epoque cabinetmaker.

Available through 1stDibs, this Frenchstyle stool with cabriole legs, circa 1950, is topped with a vibrant blue cushion. French Louis XV style Pillow Top Stool, price available upon request; 1stdibs.com

Splurge-Worthy: Luxury fabric. Loro Piana cashmere has recently been introduced for the home, as well.

The statement-making ball gown reigns supreme in Timeless Beauties, House of Toi’s fall collection, which features ensembles handcrafted with cashmere, wool tweed, baby camel hair, taffeta and French lace. 294 l u x e i n t e r i o r s

parisian persuasion Enamored with French styles, fashion designer Zang Toi transformed an early-20th-century New York City apartment into his personal Parisian-inspired retreat. Posh accents in the sitting room, such as a custom silver-fox rug, antique Baccarat chandelier and portraits of Marie Antoinette by artist Natasha Zupan, pop against high-gloss white walls. More of Toi’s home can be seen in the book American Fashion Designers at Home, available through Assouline (assouline.com).

COLOR THEORY THE CREATIVE FORCE BEHIND REBEL-CHIC FASHION HOUSE LIBERTINE HAS A HIDDEN AFFINITY FOR INTERIORS, MADE EVIDENT IN THE MODERN TRANSFORMATION OF HIS RUSTIC LOS ANGELES BUNGALOW.

REFASHIONED APPROACH Fans of Johnson Hartig’s lauded eco-friendly fashion label Libertine revel in his ability to turn tired vintage clothing into couture ensembles. So, it comes as no surprise that Hartig’s eye for refashioning antiques seems to effortlessly translate to interiors, too. “I love collecting, being resourceful, mixing things up and surprising people,” Hartig says. Such was his method when he set out to design A solid piece of wood forms the band for this unique cuff, complete with a 14-karat gold accent with spinel and white coral charms. 14K YG Spinel & Coral Cuff, $6,950; devillefinejewelry.com

his Los Angeles home, incorporating a mix of vintage and modern pieces, vibrant Damien Hirst paintings and graphic black and white fabrics. Rules rarely apply to the self-taught designer, who often finds inspiration in the unexpected and pays little attention to trends, which explains, Hartig says, why the evolution of his interiors is as constant as his couture collections. “My home, like Libertine, is always a work in progress.” ilovelibertine.com

Design Tip: Go wild, edit and try as many combinations as you need until something jumps out.

Available in a number of coverings from Elite Leather, this soft angular swivel chair features a brushed aluminum base and unique upholstered body. Palos Verdes, price available upon request; eliteleather.com

Sneak Peek: I’m in a ’70s mood for spring 2012. It’s an era that made a big impression on me, even as a kid decorating my bedroom.

Interior Insight: I like to make sure every room has one great antique piece as an anchor, and then I work from there.

Part of ABC Carpet’s Color Reform collection, this antique, hand-woven rug was over-dyed in Turkey to give it a deep, saturated color. Purple Color Reform Vintage Rug, $2,999; abccarpet.com

Up Next: I was approached before to design a line for the home and wasn’t ready. Now, I think I am.

Johnson Hartig’s fall collection for Libertine is reminiscent of works of art, specifically, he says, “post-World War German expressionistic prints. We took a small area and blew it up to get the look we were going for.” 296 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

paint the town The living room of fashion designer Johnson Hartig’s 1920s Los Angeles bungalow boasts a smorgasbord of colors and styles, all set against a white-painted shell and rustic wooden roof. A color-saturated painting by Damien Hirst centers a wall of art, while an oversized Lucite table and graphic chairs add modernity. Hartig’s home was featured in the book American Fashion Designers at Home, available through Assouline (assouline.com).

STAYING POWER FROM THE EARLY CREATION OF DIANE VON FURSTENBERG’S ICONIC WRAP DRESS TO THE INTRODUCTION OF HER ANTICIPATED LINE OF HOME DÉCOR, IT SEEMS THERE’S NOTHING THE RESPECTED STYLE ARBITER CAN’T TACKLE.

BRANCHING OUT It’s little known that Diane von Furstenberg’s passion for interior design stretches as far back as the 1980s, when, while lovers of the DVF brand were admiring her revival of figure-flattering dresses, she released a series of books on home décor. “I love the balance between color, texture, pattern and proportion that can exist in both fashion and the home,” she says. Often acclaimed Turkish jewelry designer Sevan Biçakçi crafted this ornate ring with 24-karat gold, white, yellow and cognac diamonds and pink tourmaline cabochons. R3028, $9,887; barneys.com

for her liberal use of pattern and color, it seemed a natural transition for von Furstenberg to later debut lines of homeware and textiles. Most recently, von Furstenberg channeled her expert sense of interior design in a series of suites for the venerable Claridge’s hotel in London. “My aim was to respect the legendary glamour of the hotel, while incorporating pieces that beautifully illustrate my passion for pattern, texture and travel.” dvf.com

Muse: I am always inspired by women, nature and the 20th century. For me, these sources are timeless.

An intricate hand-carved wood frame wraps a gilded inset frame on this luxurious statement-making mirror from Christopher Guy. 50-2926, price available upon request; christopherguy.com

Design Tip: Have fun with textures, large prints, florals and stripes in ways that make you feel beautiful, but comfortable.

Philosophy: I design clothes that I love and that I think women will feel beautiful wearing. The same applies to my home products.

The striking jewel tone, classic damask print and modern silhouette make this armchair the perfect accessory to build a room around. Sutton Armchair, $299; angelohome.com

Interior Insight: Use boldly patterned wallpaper, bedding and rugs with calculated purpose. These should be focal points in a room.

Diane von Furstenberg’s fall collection—American Legends—fuses patterns, colors and styles reminiscent of different cultures, landscapes and eras. Here, a graphic print re-imagines the wrap dress.

Eco-sensitive,

Client Centered Design LIVE WELL + ECO - rESpOnSIbLY AT THE SAME TIME Straw-bale homes or ones built with recycled tires aren’t for most people, even the most environmentally aware. Sesshu Design Associates understands that. I am a LEED-accredited professional, knowledgeable in green design and will work with you to create an eco-luxurious home that is uniquely yours and incorporates your chosen Earth-friendly materials and technologies. You may wish to significantly reduce your carbon footprint or just want your luxury home or remodel to include a few green items such as electronically controlled sunshades, flooring sourced from quickly recoverable forests, recycled materials and low-VOC paints. My passion is eco-luxury and I meld this to your needs, taste and budget. While we are an award-winning firm, you are my focus, not accolades. Your vision is our inspiration.

Healthy, Efficient Homes That Fit Your Lifestyle Clients seek me because they want a healthy, efficient home that fits their lifestyles but they don’t have the time, skills or desire to complete it themselves. I ease the process and partner with your architect, builder and subcontractors for results that are superlative because of this collaborative spirit. Some see luxury and sustainability as exclusive—as if we cannot live well and eco-responsibly at the same time. At Sesshu Design Associates, our goal is synthesizing these concepts for inspired residential interior design—creating homes respectful of the land, the community and your needs. While designing your dream home or remodel, we offer you all of the available options for building eco-sensitively while retaining your need for luxury and a chosen style. I research, explore, analyze and present materials and products that are beautiful, functional and environmentally responsible.

“ Your project is my priority. You can be confident that my attention to detail and follow-through will mesh with your desire for a peerless eco-friendly home.”

This Fall Wiseman & Gale celebrates 45 years of creating distinguished interiors for our clients in Arizona, throughout the Country, and Internationally. Although 45 years have brought many changes, W&G’s approach to design has remained the same. “We believe interiors should be timeless, and that a home should be comfortable with beautiful trimmings that reflect the unique tastes of the client. They should be refined, understated, and have an exquisite feeling of quality.”
