green shoots. We’re kicking off this spring in pursuit of optimism, creativity and new inspirations. Fortunately, we’ve come across much of it this year, starting in January at Maison & Objet in Paris, where green hues seemed to dominate furniture and accessories, and continuing with an upbeat mood at design markets in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. The evening before I wrote this letter, we hosted dinner with a group of designer friends at San Francisco’s stylish Twenty Five Lusk. During dessert, Ted Boerner posed a thought-provoking question: “Do you know your life’s purpose?” Consider that for a moment while I share my response: “I’m not exactly sure and don’t mind being ambiguous about it.” Perhaps that’s because I consider uncertainty and curiosity to be welcome mats at the door of creativity and reinvention, an environment where ideas take shape and green shoots sprout up. All of us here, however, are quite assured when it comes to our passion for this magazine, and to serving our readers and the design community. Let me share an exciting project that will be in full bloom this November⎯ Maison de Luxe, our first national designer show house at Historic Greystone Estate in Beverly Hills, taking place in partnership with the City of Beverly Hills and the Friends of Greystone. ART MIX MASTER Reconsider your concept of color: That’s both the request and goal of Carlos Cruz-Diez. This FrancoVenezuelan artist views color not as a static property but as an active process of the eye, and his exploration of color has been the driving force of his five-decade career. There’s a tremendous amount of pride in the craftsmanship and quality of the product line. You can sense it throughout the entire facility. The average tenure of our labor force in

Reading is probably 30 years, where sons and fathers work side by side. When we are the ones bringing a concept from cradle to grave—in the fact that we have the designers here and the engineers in the factory— it brings the whole story together. It’s important that we control from concept all the way through to when the consumer gets it on their door. The amount of man-hours that go into the Archetypes line, for example, is astronomical as opposed to a fully automated factory. It’s anywhere from 15 to 20 artisans physically working on the product after concept, so every order has 15 to 20 people touching it along the way. Baldwin is an investment. We’re not the cheapest hardware brand, nor will we ever be. We want to make sure that people’s expectations are exceeded when they choose to invest in us.

As a hands-on, family-operated business, we can be nimble to trends and change directions as we see fit. We don’t have to answer to a

plan that is developed years ahead and can react when necessary. We buy a lot from domestic mills. We always go to them first. It’s a long-term partnership with the mill, and they can get us products faster than other countries. In our company, you can be a customer with a small problem or a big one, and your issue might wind up on the president’s desk. We are in touch with our consumers at the very highest level. We can make changes at the drop of a dime if we deem them necessary. What most interior designers are interested in are things that they don’t find everywhere else. So that’s the true key to the craftsmanship: where the mills are constantly coming up with new things that we have not seen before.

HOW IS THIS BOOK A DEPARTURE FROM YOUR OTHER SIX? It’s the way I approached the subject: standing very much out of the box and looking in. From styling all of the shoots around the world, working on page layouts, selecting images, etc.—I have been thoroughly immersed in every part of the process. YOU’RE KNOWN FOR WORKING WITHIN A NEUTRAL COLOR PALETTE. WHAT’S THE KEY TO CREATING A ROOM WITH IMPACT WHILE USING NEUTRALS? You highlight and emphasize using texture. I am not against the use of color and use color frequently; it’s just that color is used to accent rather than as the palette. YOU WROTE ABOUT CREATING DISPLAYS OF OBJECTS. WHERE ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE OFFBEAT PLACES TO SHOP FOR THEM? I love finding items whilst I travel, coming across a small shop that may not look like much from the outside but, upon entering, is a treasure trove. Never judge a shop by its exterior.

This living-dining-cooking venue is emblematic of Hoppen’s skill in space planning, as the room is segmented into three functional zones while maintaining a sense of flow and cohesiveness. The monochromatic color palette is another Hoppen trademark, drawing interest from contrasting forms and textures.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST MISTAKE THE AVERAGE PERSON MAKES IN DECORATING? Poor space planning, resulting in too much or too little in a room. Always remember to plan, plan, plan—and then plan a little more if you want everything to be perfect.

I love Alessandra Branca’s work because it’s bold and beautiful and fresh. And Mary McDonald, her work is very colorful and alive. YOU WROTE THAT YOU’RE A COLLECTOR. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR COLLECTIONS? Oh my god, I have too many. My most significant collections are my paintings of interiors, my 18th- and 19th-century garden plans and my bronze perfume burners. And I think I have now reached the age where I have to stop. WHERE ARE SOME UNLIKELY PLACES WHERE YOU DISCOVER GREAT FINDS? If you’re a hunter, there’s no place that’s unlikely because you shop everywhere. I don’t care if it’s all those shows out in the Hamptons or whether I’m in a little stall in the Paris Flea Market—you just find things.

For this great hall, Moss drew inspiration from the English country house West Wycombe Park, whose golden-hued façade is echoed in the ochre walls. The focal point of this comfortable gathering place is a central table stocked with books and curiosities that encourage guests to linger.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR SOUTHERN HERITAGE SURFACE IN YOUR DESIGN? It’s not so much in the physical; it’s in the ease and hospitality that rooms express. If a room just feels rich, who gives a damn? What are you going to do to make it inviting? And that is the ability—which is a sixth sense, in my belief—to really make a room welcoming. And I think you can do that if you live like that. And I think Southerners live like that.

The elements of scale and accessibility—mixed with a hands-on focus— guide this former architect’s work in a personal and profound way. “It’s unexpected,” he says, “that I would become a better designer by becoming a better builder.” Disenchanted with architecture early on, Conner left the corporate world for a self-made, garage-site woodshop. He began creating tabletops on mid-century modern bases and later fashioned deconstructed dressers into cabinets with his signature photographic doors. A fan of raw and reclaimed wood, he says he explores the relationship between material and graphics with a defined sense of purpose. “I love the challenge of figuring something out that I haven’t designed or built before,” he says. “There comes a ‘voilà’ moment when it all finally snaps together, and that is my favorite part of the process.” bladonconner.com; 773.742.0855

every other place I go to from Shanghai to Seoul—filling my canvas bag with pieces of debris,” says the Chicago-based Thompson. “Then I recycle them, and turn them into collages, monoprints and sculptures.” Thompson found his inner artist later in life. “I was helping to build a community arts center, and the owner asked me to teach a class,” he says. “He told me to make a collage; I didn’t know what that was.” He was 30 when he entered the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. “I dropped out during my last semester and used my tuition money to buy an etching press,” he says. “I still use it today.” Turning nothing into something thought-provoking is still what drives Thompson: “I like figuring out how things go together.” michaelthompsonart.com; 773.533.0506

artist FRANCINE TURK Francine Turk describes the clientele at her Chicago showroom as people who understand the importance of living with original art and surrounding themselves with things that make them “feel.” Celebrities and major art enthusiasts are among those who have been stirred in such a way by Turk’s works, including her signature collection of charcoal nude portraits in antique frames. “Inspiration for my nudes spawned from an interest in battling my fear of working with the figure—but also my love for the Parisian apartment salon wall,” she says. “I wanted that aesthetic for my own interior, so I created it for myself.” Since opening her studio eight years ago, Turk has expanded her interest in interiors to working with area designers to help clients select art. “Because I am inspired by the design process, it only motivates me more,” she says. “Seeing a client’s space tells me so much about them; I let my sixth sense come into play and allow my intuition to dictate what they need.” The studio/showroom not only gives Turk space to create, it’s a place to entertain collectors and clients. “Personal interaction is pertinent to me,” she says. “It’s an incredible gift to witness people connecting with my work.”

builder Hewitt Horn, inc. Even as a graduate student in architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Matthew Ehrhard couldn’t stop building. Instead of beginning his design projects with a traditional sketch, Ehrhard, who earned an undergrad degree in fine arts and psychology, started the process with working models. “I’ve always loved to create things,” he says. “There was something missing from my designer’s degree—and that was hands-on building.” Today, Ehrhard brings the best of his creative and artistic attributes to the business he launched 18 years ago, Hewitt Horn, builder of high-end residential and commercial projects in the Chicago area. “We’re very discerning about our client base; we pursue the ‘Swiss watch’ projects,” Ehrhard says. “Our goal is not to be big. It’s to be focused on what we do and who we do it for.” He calls the consistent thread that runs through a Hewitt Horn project “refined but understated.” In recent years, Hewitt Horn, which operates out of an 11,000-square-foot facility with a full mill shop in downtown Chicago, has turned its attention to eco-conscious building. “We’re trying to be smarter, more thoughtful and more respectful of the environment as we work,” he says.

BUILDER NEW CONCEPT 180 When Gideon Lipnickas launched New Concept 180, he didn’t add the number to his company name just for show. He wanted clients to understand from the outset that his boutique business would approach their remodeling needs from a fresh perspective. It starts with candor and communication. When New Concept 180 begins a project— most of which involve additions or renovations for kitchens and bathrooms—it doesn’t mince words. “We educate the client before starting so that they know exactly what to expect during each step of the process,” Lipnickas says. “Often, the client has little knowledge of all the factors that make a project run smoothly. & tile Stalwart SyStemS, llC Gene Jurczak wasn’t looking to start a business, even though he knew the kitchen and bath industry inside out after two-plus decades. But, when Hanwha Surfaces put the word out that it needed a Midwest distributor for its new quartz product—HanStone—Jurczak not only climbed into the entrepreneurial ring, he knocked out a few heavyweight companies along the way. “I put together a business plan, submitted it to them, and they selected me to distribute the product over major corporations,” Jurczak says. “I didn’t even have a company.” Today, Jurczak has a thriving company—Stalwart Systems, launched in 2005—that delivers Hanwha and other stone products to countertop fabricators, contractors and kitchen/bath dealers in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana. In 2010, Stalwart—which also distributes Piedrafina Marble (95 percent recycled marble)—increased its business by more than 50 percent over the previous year. Jurczak credits his business partner, Darin Pondel (who joined Stalwart in 2006) and the tireless dedication of his team. “I have some of the best people in the business,” he says.

“We have three young kids, and we’re all outdoor types, so I wanted to be closer to nature and on the lake if possible. I thought we’d be happier in that kind of setting,” reasons the husband, a web entrepreneur. “So we saw 14 homes in a day.” Midway through the lineup, they walked into a sleek ranch on a 2-acre, bluffhugging lakeside lot, with a lower level that burrowed down in back and overlooked the water with floor-to-ceiling windows. “It was in bad shape. The real estate agent was talking teardown, but we fell for it and knew we wanted to fix it up,” says the husband. That’s when they switched gears and “threw caution to the wind,” he says. “We knew it was perfect for us, but it was a major stretch because it needed a lot of work. We just didn’t realize how much.” They asked Petra Adelfang, a Glencoe interior designer with an eponymous firm, to spearhead the project. “We’re close friends, and we’ve always admired her aesthetic. She got what we wanted to do with this house immediately,” says the husband.

SAVING FACE New face brick in a velvety buff replaced the painted common brick original to the home and gives it a smoother, more polished appearance. The front door was replaced with a glass version from Fleetwood Windows & Doors for total transparency.

EXPRESS YOURSELF With its new limestone floor and a lacquered cantilevered shelf by Pastoe that sports hidden storage, the foyer is dressy without being formal. An oversized B&B Italia ottoman does double duty as a seat and a spot for mail and bags. Both abstract expressionist paintings were done in the 1950s and came from the Thomas McCormick Gallery in Chicago.

BENCH PLAYER For an elegant-but-not-too-formal take on a great room, Christian Liaigre upholstered pieces were covered in coordinating fabrics, and a custom dining table concepted by interior designer Petra Adelfang and fabricated by Bernhard Woodwork in Northbrook was paired with six Flip dining chairs by Poliform and a long leather Walter Knoll bench from Luminaire. The wool-and-silk rug is by Odegard; the antique, Chinese glazed water jug is from Chen & Chen in Highland Park.

Today, Adelfang laughs when she recalls the story. “It was a classically modern home built in 1968 by an anonymous designer that had received a bad ’80s update. ‘A lot of work’ was a total understatement,” she quips. Adelfang was particularly irked by the choppy layout and heavy-handed detailing that defied the home’s true intentions: to be open, airy and related to the lake. “Lifestyles have changed. They were moving there for the views and an outdoor existence, but the house had an enclosed kitchen, and you could only access the back and lake from the lower level,” she points out. The grounds needed just as much help. “The swimming pool was in the front yard because of the narrow bluff, and the landscaping wasn’t appropriate for the setting,” she explains. To realize the couple’s vision, Adelfang assembled a dream team that included Glencoe architect Scott Javore, of R. Scott Javore & Associates, respected for his restoration work; acclaimed Chicago landscape architect Douglas Hoerr, of Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects, known for his groundbreaking public gardens; and general contractor John Weiss, of Weiss Enterprises in Highwood.

INSIDE STORY Adelfang outďŹ tted the newly minted mudroom with handsome butternut millwork of her own design, planned to offer lots of hidden storage; each of the ownersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; daughters has her own locker. Baltimore limestone planks from Stone Source in Chicago emulate wood and provide a waterproof surface.

CALL YOUR BLUFF The beefed-up bluff allowed the design team to build an inﬁnity-edge pool—installed by the Boilini Company in Libertyville—behind the house and surround it with a newly designed two-story deck. It also includes a new ﬂoating staircase that connects the main level to the pool area. The landscape, designed by Douglas Hoerr of Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects, was installed by Mariani Landscape in Lake Bluff.

SEASONAL MENU The outdoor hearth is in a secluded spot in the front of the house and can be used three seasons a year. Two teak Pure Sofas from Henry Hall Design in San Francisco are paired together to form a pit-style L for cozily roasting marshmallows over the campfire with the kids. The program they devised left no brick unturned—literally. It also kept growing. The home was given a new layout and a master staircase to increase lake views and enhance room-to-room flow; updated materials and millwork; all new systems from high-efficiency mechanicals to low-e windows; and a perpendicular addition at its north end for a music room, a home gym and more garage space. “Once we realized the magnitude of the changes, we recognized it would be better from both a structural and aesthetic standpoint to reclad the painted white, common brick façade with a higher-quality and better-looking face brick,” explains Javore, who worked with project architect Brad Korando, a member of his firm, on the renovation. WHITE SQUALL The kitchen is now open to the family room and has sightlines to the lake. Custom cabinets are clad in the same butternut veneer that sheathes the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two-sided, ďŹ&#x201A;oating hearths. Hoerr took a similar stance on the landscape. “It made more sense to beef up the bluff and move the pool lakeside, even though it was a huge, technically demanding undertaking. But it opened up the entire back of the house to the lake and changed the way it lives,” he explains. Weiss proved to be a master at managing the army of designers, engineers, subcontractors and craftsmen. “He’s amazingly thorough and incredibly calm,” says Adelfang. The job boiled down to redoing absolutely everything, even though “we didn’t know we were going to go this far when we started,” admits the husband. But the family has reaped its just rewards. When Adelfang recently asked them where they were going for spring break, the wife responded, “Nowhere. Living here, we’re on vacation year-round.” L

But, after a 25-minute meeting with Lisa Wolfe, of Lisa Wolfe Design in Chicago—who teamed up with Shaumburg-based architect Mark Di Ganci, of Design Studio 24, and general contractor Carlos Suastegui, of Space Lab, also in Chicago—they were off and running on a whirlwind redesign that kept Wolfe on her toes. “He’s a fast-paced guy who works out of his house, a hardcore thrillseeker, someone who travels the world and jumps out of helicopters and goes skiing,” she says. “He’s always doing something. He doesn’t sit still.” Indeed, over the two years they worked together on this project, the duo spoke on the phone just a handful of times, relying mainly on text messaging for communication. The condo, with its open-plan living-and-dining area and double-story foyer, from where the home’s loft is visible, reflects the unusual proportions of the 1875 schoolhouse in which it is located: 10-foot-high windows and varying ceiling heights. The first matter of importance—initially the only matter— was gutting the kitchen. “It was straight out of the early 1990s,” says Wolfe.

“There was black granite everywhere.” But, she says, as they walked around the house, expanding the focus as they went, “I got his design sense right away. He had a lot of beautiful rugs and antiques, pieces with a bit of history.” The fact that an unusable Baroque-style piano, one he had no intention of playing, sat at the foot of the stairs because he appreciated its curves, was an inspirational cue. So was the beautiful writing desk that he paired with a framed poster of the British band UB40. “He likes classic pieces but is anything but conventional,” she says. “He has a sophisticated palette with sort of a distinguished Ralph Lauren style.”

MELTING POT The kitchen anchors one end of the open-plan livingand-dining area. Dark, distressed alder cabinets from Creative Builders and a Flemish painting above the stainless-steel Wolf range impart a traditional feel, but the sofa at the dining table (both by Hickory Chair), the Halo Styles bar chairs and a Samsung LCD television create a casual vibe. The client’s only prerequisite for the kitchen was red knobs for the oven, the distinctive feature of models from the Wolf brand. The rest was up to the designer, who added rich details like traditional molding and corbels; dark, distressed woods; gray granite countertops; and seeded glass cabinets. Leatherseated barstools at the counter complement the casual mix of chairs and a gold-tone velvet-upholstered sofa at the walnut dining table. Di Ganci organized the rooms to improve function, incorporating dead space. “You want to steal every inch,” he says. “It’s a condo, so it’s limited by its parameters, which pushes you to maximize the size of the interiors.”

Striped wallpaper by Printers Guild Productions, sourced at the Merchandise Mart, lines the wall when entering the livingand-dining area. A Henredon console table with a marble top, bronze-tone sconces from Hudson Valley at Idlewood Electric and a castiron horse head from the Kane County Flea Market in St. Charles offer regal touches.

TRUE COLORS The seating area in the living room is a mix of lively patterns inspired by the resident’s antique rug. The Hickory Chair sofa, from Walter E. Smithe, is covered in a stripe from Brunschwig & Fils. The blue-and-white fabric on the chair, also from Brunschwig & Fils, is the ﬂip side of a print depicting a warrior on a stallion going into battle. The chair is from Drexel Heritage. Textures add a luxurious touch: A custom ottoman is covered in black velvet from Robert Allen, and the resident’s own antique chair features a crimson-red velvet from Brunschwig & Fils.

DISTINGUISHED PANEL Multiple seating areas in the master bedroom provide workstations for the resident, who conducts business from home. Elegant oak paneling balances the rustic feel of the roomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exposed beams. The built-in bench, custom by Eurocraft and upholstered in Kravet fabrics, ends in an alcove where a window was discovered during renovations. The distressed dresser is by Noir, and the sconces are by Visual Comfort, all found at the Merchandise Mart.

BOOK NOOK A cozy corner of built-in bookshelves in the master bedroom is within arm’s reach of a Henredon desk that is paired with a chair covered in velvet from Kravet. The Albert English bronze-iron desk lamp was found at Mecox Gardens; the maple hardwood flooring is from Home Carpet One.

Wolfe designed the adjacent living area using the palette of the client’s antique rug: faded magenta, peacock blue and gold. “He really took a chance on some of the things I showed him,” she says, namely the striped eggplantand-charcoal sofa or the red fabric on a side chair with a gold diamond pattern. “Not many guys would go for that.” The stairs from this area lead to the loft, which houses a cozy media room. The design team knocked out a wall and installed an iron railing to allow light into the previously dark space. Stairs that lead down from the living area open up the

SUNKEN TREASURE The lower-level master bath features a mosaic ﬂoor design from Urban Archaeology. Space Lab installed the custom cabinetry and vanity, where polished nickel faucets by Rohl and gold-framed mirrors add a bit of polish. master bedroom, which was formerly two separate spaces. Wood paneling in the now-spacious room, says Wolfe, gives it “something like a gorgeous hotel-in-thecountry feel.” Cushioned benches all along one wall tuck into a nook at the end, where a window was discovered in an old mechanical closet. The resident, who works on his laptop around the house, declares this cove his favorite spot. “This was the easiest project I’ve ever done,” says Wolfe. “It came so naturally, partly because he has such good taste and what he already had was well taken care of. Not to mention,” she adds, “his energy level was a breath of fresh air.” L

This 24th-floor River North aerie, owned by 33-year-old London transplant Stephen Honeyball, is every inch the match for any raw-edged, art-filled loft overlooking Berlin’s smoky skyline. For 10 months, the designers oversaw a swarm of painters, contractors and even gardeners (2,000 square feet of terraces encircle the place) to transform a somewhat traditional layout into sleek lacquered walls, gray concrete floors and sheer nonstop style. Although the apartment is in an elegant high-rise, built by Sutherland Pearsall Development with architecture by Loewenberg Architects, Honeyball’s use of the home promised to be altogether different than the previous owners’. “It was almost a complete gut,” says Riker about transforming interiors designed for a family of four into space better suited to a bachelor client. “The kitchen is the only thing that stayed. It’s a Mick de Giulio, high-lacquer blue and very cool. It fit our aesthetic perfectly.”

The library is an updated twist on English country style with Maya Romanoff’s Ajiro Chevron in Platinum standing in for wood paneling. That aesthetic “was driven by my desire to create a place to display my art,” explains Honeyball, who has an affinity for paintings with some pretty highoctane presence. “I wanted a hotel art gallery feel, but I also wanted to use bright colors. I didn’t want the place to be so minimal it was like a hospital.” In response, the designers applied white lacquer to walls and removed every inch of the old apartment’s decorative millwork and shelving—trusting their talented contractor, Michael Mariottini of Itasca’s Mariottini, Inc., to deal with the downside of minimalism: the fact that there’s nowhere to hide mis-

takes. “Everything had to be perfect,” says Mariottini. “Where there are fewer moldings and cornices, every reveal around a door stands out. There was no room for error.” To provide contrasting texture to their perfect white box, the designers decided to strip sheetrock from walls surrounding the building’s stairwell to reveal raw concrete beneath. “Then Stephen hung this 10-by-16-foot resin painting with crazy colors against the concrete wall in the dining room,” says Riker. “It looks amazing.”

Amazing, yes, but still not as eye-popping as the enormous S-shaped sofa— topped with splashy Missoni fabric–covered pillows—that Riker designed for the cavernous living room. “The sofa offers pods of seating for coziness,” explains Riker, “so the room doesn’t feel like a big, empty space when it’s just Stephen and his girlfriend.” While snuggling up, they can feast their eyes on the custom, purple floral rug from Hokanson or the lime green Arne Jacobsen Swan Chair. Looking across the newly wide-open living-dining-office space, through floorto-ceiling windows to the stands of trees waving outside on the terrace, the whole place reads like some hypermodern sculpture garden. The outdoor spaces are such a presence inside that they received as much design attention as the living room. “Stephen wanted a South Beach feel with lots of color,” says Phil Cleland, owner and president of Chicago Specialty Gardens, who created the landscape. Planters filled with trees divide the space into outdoor rooms; there’s a sleek, custom-made firepit by Ore of Salt Lake City, and strategically placed LEDs sparkle in the background. “This project took us a bit out of our comfort zone, and it was fun to open our minds to it,” says Riker, pointing to a hallway covered head to toe in wild Osborne & Little flowers. But, more importantly, what does the newly transplanted Chicagoan think? “It turned out better than I thought it would,” says Honeyball. “The liberal use of concrete and lacquer and all the bold colors are things I think most Americans would shy away from.” But not the Americans at jamesthomas, apparently. Mr. Mayor, your work here is done. L

wanted to find a home that had a connection to the outdoors,” says Galvin. The young house-hunters focused their search in Evanston, and Galvin advised her clients to seriously consider a boxy, one-story home that—though it hadn’t been updated since its construction in the late 1970s—had lots of potential. The bonus: its modest exterior also concealed a lovely Zen-style courtyard with an enormous birch tree surrounded by a leafy-green pachysandra groundcovering and an ebony-stained wood deck.

“This was as California a house as they were ever going to find here,” explains Galvin. “It’s more vacation-style than it is a traditional North Shore home.” To help with the renovation, Galvin engaged her frequent collaborator, building contractor Rutledge Smith, owner of Franklin & Wells in Chicago. “It may be unassuming from the street, but the house is spectacular,” says Smith, who eagerly anticipated the freedom the structure would lend to the project. “No interior wall was bearing, so we could do whatever we wanted.” Smith quickly brought on board architect Michael Hershenson, of Michael Hershenson Architects in Evanston, to help bring the project to fruition. “Cindy had a vision to transform a very contemporary house into a traditional home,” Hershenson explains. “By cutting the ceiling rafters and restructuring above, we were able to create volume ceilings, beamed ceilings, tray ceilings and coffered ceilings.”

FRENCH COUNTRY In the newly enlarged kitchen, interior designer Cindy Galvin created distinct spaces for food preparation, dining and storage. A red chandelier from Visual Comfort adds a splash of color to the traditional white cabinetry—found at Dynamic Built in Barrington—and illuminates an antique farm table that has been in the husband’s family since he was a child. The ladderback French Provincial chairs, discovered at the Paris Flea Market, are cozied up with skirted, tieback-style seat cushions in a Jane Shelton fabric.

PAST AND PRESENT Traditional charm meets modern-day function in the kitchenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work area, where stainless steel Miele, Sub-Zero and Viking appliances and a farmhouse sink from Kohler share space with Shaker-style cabinets and stained white oakâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;plank floors. The pot rack is from the Europa Collection by Howard Kaplan Designs in New York; the chrome-wrapped pendant lights are by Visual Comfort.

Matching boxed-beam ceilings strengthen the connection between the adjacent living and dining areas, as do identical, neutral area rugs from Stark Carpet and a grass-cloth wallcovering from Schumacher, which also clads the walls in the front hallway and in both home offices. “Layering, texture, color, form and pattern,” Galvin says. “These are my tools.” To expand the space visually, the home’s existing quarry-tile flooring was replaced with white oak stained a dark Jacobean similar to the wood decking visible just outside. A cherry herringbone inlay adds interest; the pattern repeats itself on the Calcutta Gold marble backsplash in the kitchen, which was enlarged by borrowing space from the original dining room. With the extra inches, Galvin was able to incorporate a custom-built, walnut kitchen island that she topped with the same Calcutta Gold.

FAMILY GATHERING A pair of antique, oak Windsor chairs offers additional seating for guests in the family room, where the homeowners can often be found relaxing on the comfortable sectional. Galvin punched it up with accent pillows in colorful Ikat fabric by David Easton for Lee Jofa, also used for the drapes, and diamond-quilted, cashmere lumbar pillows from Williams-Sonoma. Grass-cloth shades by Hunter Douglas are layered behind the goblet-pleat curtains.

HOLD EVERYTHING To store her clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection of Rothschild china from Scully & Scully in New York, Galvin designed a dining room hutch with American Shaker and French Provincial influences. In place of glass, she lined the cabinet doors with bronze mesh and shirred, blue-striped Belgian linen curtains. The dining room table, available at Maze Home in Winnetka, is surrounded by six antique, Louis Philippe fruitwood chairs with original leather seats, while two armchairs upholstered in a Fortuny fabric embrace the hutch.

Galvin used the marble a third time in the master bath, which was also enlarged significantly by combining two smaller baths and part of a closet. Radiant floor heating, a steam shower and a large soaker tub give the homeowners a guaranteed retreat when the mercury drops too low. “Sometimes he comes home to find her curled up on the bathroom floor,” laughs Galvin. “Creating a warm, cozy, inviting home for them was what really drove me on this job.” In the family room, the designer hung a wrought iron chandelier from Visual Comfort and designed a new wood-burning fireplace with a stone veneer resembling river rock. A colorful Turkestanian rug picks up the red, green, brown and gold tones seen in the courtyard. “That was the one room where I could pop the color, and the palette is my ode to the California desert,” Galvin explains. “To achieve harmony, I always try to incorporate the outdoors into my interiors.”

LOVE ACTUALLY A grass-cloth wallcovering from Schumacher wraps the walls of the front hallway. Galvin designed the LOVE canvas using an oak-leaf-and-acorn alphabet she created in honor of the owner’s grandparents’ farm—the central gathering place for the couple’s extended family. The home’s courtyard is dominated by a large white birch tree.

One of Galvin’s favorite pieces in the home is a sunburst mirror inlaid with Indian bone, which hangs above an antique, English bow-front dresser in the living room. Its wiggly rays reflect the sun-loving couple’s transitional style, and the convex mirror reflects, literally, the home’s ever-changing natural daylight. “They enjoy watching how the light changes throughout the day,” says Galvin. “It’s the light that makes this house shine.” L

MIRROR IMAGE At her clients’ request, Galvin simply duplicated the master suite they left behind in California, which she had designed as well. Louvered doors with barn door hardware from Ashland Millwork in Wheeling allow the couple to close off the spa-like bathroom from the bedroom. Crown and base moldings add the ﬁnishing detail and look crisp against the pale walls, painted Catalina Blue by Benjamin Moore. At the foot of the bed is a rattan-andlinen bench from McGuire’s Laura Kirar collection; at its side is an octagonal, Moorish inlaid-teak table, found at The Elephant’s Foot Antiques in West Palm Beach, Florida.

NATURAL GROWTH The uneven terrain of Colorado often brings with it architectural hurdles. In this case, it was an old-growth Ponderosa pine located centrally in the site’s building envelope. “Challenges often represent opportunities for extraordinary design solutions,” says Valerie Alexander Yaw, principal at Aspen’s Bluegreen. “We chose to preserve the tree and design the home around this great specimen.” Staying true to the environment, Yaw repurposed materials from the site and sourced local stone, boulders and wood for the outdoor living spaces.

Luxe Interiors + Design magazine celebrated the holiday season with two events in November and December. On November 18, Luxe hosted an intimate networking dinner for advertisers. The room was filled with architects, custom home builders, remodelers, interior designers and many other design/build trades. Advertisers enjoyed a hearty Italian meal while breaking bread with their peers and colleagues. On December 9, Luxe teamed up with Orren Pickell Builders to celebrate its fall issue as well as Orren Pickell’s 35th anniversary. Great food was prepared by Bluegrass restaurant “Ragin Cajun” Chef Warren, libations were provided by both Tito’s Vodka and Vino Del Sol wine, and over 200 presents were donated by guests for Toys for Tots. Thanks go out to all the hosts/sponsors, including Sapori Trattoria and Bluegrass restaurants, Tito’s Vodka, Vino Del Sol wine, Guaranteed Rate/Brian Jessen, Woodmode, Doors for Builders, Signature Hardwoods, Oscar Isberian Rugs and all those who attended!
