green shoots. We’re kicking off this spring in pursuit of optimism, creativity and new inspirations. Fortunately, we’ve come across much of it this year, starting in January at Maison & Objet in Paris, where green hues seemed to dominate furniture and accessories, and continuing with an upbeat mood at design markets in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. The evening before I wrote this letter, we hosted dinner with a group of designer friends at San Francisco’s stylish Twenty Five Lusk. During dessert, Ted Boerner posed a thought-provoking question: “Do you know your life’s purpose?” Consider that for a moment while I share my response: “I’m not exactly sure and don’t mind being ambiguous about it.” Perhaps that’s because I consider uncertainty and curiosity to be welcome mats at the door of creativity and reinvention, an environment where ideas take shape and green shoots sprout up. All of us here, however, are quite assured when it comes to our passion for this magazine, and to serving our readers and the design community. Let me share an exciting project that will be in full bloom this November⎯ Maison de Luxe, our first national designer show house at Historic Greystone Estate in Beverly Hills, taking place in partnership with the City of Beverly Hills and the Friends of Greystone. ART MIX MASTER Reconsider your concept of color: That’s both the request and goal of Carlos Cruz-Diez. This FrancoVenezuelan artist views color not as a static property but as an active process of the eye, and his exploration of color has been the driving force of his five-decade career. There’s a tremendous amount of pride in the craftsmanship and quality of the product line. You can sense it throughout the entire facility. The average tenure of our labor force in

Reading is probably 30 years, where sons and fathers work side by side. When we are the ones bringing a concept from cradle to grave—in the fact that we have the designers here and the engineers in the factory— it brings the whole story together. It’s important that we control from concept all the way through to when the consumer gets it on their door. The amount of man-hours that go into the Archetypes line, for example, is astronomical as opposed to a fully automated factory. It’s anywhere from 15 to 20 artisans physically working on the product after concept, so every order has 15 to 20 people touching it along the way. Baldwin is an investment. We’re not the cheapest hardware brand, nor will we ever be. We want to make sure that people’s expectations are exceeded when they choose to invest in us.

In our company, you can be a customer with a small problem or a big one, and your issue might wind up on the president’s desk. We are in touch with our consumers at the very highest level. We can make changes at the drop of a dime if we deem them necessary. What most interior designers are interested in are things that they don’t find everywhere else. So that’s the true key to the craftsmanship: where the mills are constantly coming up with new things that we have not seen before.

From styling all of the shoots around the world, working on page layouts, selecting images, etc.—I have been thoroughly immersed in every part of the process. I am not against the use of color and use color frequently; it’s just that color is used to accent rather than as the palette. YOU WROTE ABOUT CREATING DISPLAYS OF OBJECTS. WHERE ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE OFFBEAT PLACES TO SHOP FOR THEM? I love finding items whilst I travel, coming across a small shop that may not look like much from the outside but, upon entering, is a treasure trove. Never judge a shop by its exterior.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR COLLECTIONS? Oh my god, I have too many. My most significant collections are my paintings of interiors, my 18th- and 19th-century garden plans and my bronze perfume burners. And I think I have now reached the age where I have to stop. WHERE ARE SOME UNLIKELY PLACES WHERE YOU DISCOVER GREAT FINDS? If you’re a hunter, there’s no place that’s unlikely because you shop everywhere. I don’t care if it’s all those shows out in the Hamptons or whether I’m in a little stall in the Paris Flea Market—you just find things.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR SOUTHERN HERITAGE SURFACE IN YOUR DESIGN? It’s not so much in the physical; it’s in the ease and hospitality that rooms express. If a room just feels rich, who gives a damn? What are you going to do to make it inviting? And that is the ability—which is a sixth sense, in my belief—to really make a room welcoming. And I think you can do that if you live like that. And I think Southerners live like that.

Delzers envisioned a modern collection with an ethnic twist, referencing long voyages and African legends. The cabinet’s bronze-sculpted handles with glass cabochons appear like jeweled bracelets against a scratched-wood exterior powdered with gold.

“This cabinet reminds me of the great pieces by Eugene Printz from the 1920s and ’30s. I love the leg and handle detail as well as the overall finish. It looks like a very rich piece. A pair of these in a big entry with beautiful ceramics or sculptures on top would look great. Similarly, a pair in a living room flanking the fireplace would be dramatic and wonderful.”

Inspired By Nature: “The beauty and palette of the surrounding landscape was much of the inspiration for Red Draw Ranch in Edwards (left). The owners had a strong vision of creating a mountain sanctuary with a winding trout stream dotted with small ponds and fields of wildflowers with mown paths for afternoons of fishing and strolling.”

Biggest Challenge: “When we started, there were thick patches of thistle and much disturbed ground, making weed control and timing of seeding critical. We were able to manage most if it through selection of more aggressive native grasses and biennials, and timing, timing, timing of seeding and planting.”

Design Elements: “We incorporated meadows, streams and the palette of existing plant communities such as aspen and blue spruce to create an extension of what existed. We used native grasses and seasonal wildflowers such as yarrow, lupine, gallardia and blue flax.”

Mission Possible: “My goal with all projects is to create and nurture viable environments that integrate humans and structures with the ecology of their surroundings. The primary goal on this project was to increase and create habitats for trout and elk especially. Lofty Aspirations: The owners of a 35-acre Carbondale ranch (above), on a high plateau brimming with sagebrush and gambel oak, recruited Richard Camp Landscape Architecture of Carbondale to plan the entry sequence, outdoor spaces, ponds and gardens. The team faced certain limitations, however, as the site had little irrigation and the clients didn’t want perennial plants. Natural Solution: Drought-tolerant species were paired with diverse paving materials, such as wood, flagstone and colored concrete. RCLA delineated the spaces, including a fire pit, a garden and a gazebo, with stone walls. An early stint in architecture wasn’t the right fit for David Rasmussen, but an understanding of space garnered during the experience nevertheless influences his true career calling of contemporary furniture design. “I picked

up the functional side of things,” he says, “how people use furniture.” The Carbondale-based craftsman learned the technical aspects of his field growing up in New Hampshire, where a high school woodworking class led to apprenticeships and then employment with artisan furnituremakers. Though his style is his own—Rasmussen’s Split Series includes side tables that have been split open and painted on top to resemble artichokes or cabbage heads—his love for mid-century modern style and designs by the likes of Charles and Ray Eames and George Nakashima is evident elsewhere. Rasmussen, who also creates sculpture and builds elaborate tree houses, custom-makes most of his pieces, and his first step comes down to that question of space once again. “It’s a discovery process,” he says. “I’ll go to a client’s house, see the space and the architecture, and use the context of their home as my starting point.” davidrasmussendesign.com; 970.510.0637

drawn to the textiles—in particular the crocheted petticoats made by local women. “When the villagers would dance, I couldn’t help but notice the colorful scalloped edges showing out underneath their puffy skirts,” says Hernando, a native of Argentina who moved to the United States 25 years ago and now resides in Boulder. She ultimately purchased a petticoat from every woman in the village, and the collection eventually found its way into a series of Hernando’s art installations at places like the MCA Denver and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri. Favorite Getaway: Salk’awasi, the ancestral home of my teacher Don Américo Yábar, located in the mountains outside of Cusco, Peru. There are beautiful gardens and no electricity. It is my dreaming place.

So, despite the distance, he was the perfect fit for a Denver couple with East Coast roots that wanted to design a grand home in Cherry Creek. “We wanted the house to feel like it had been around for 75 years but have the modern features and lightness of a new home,” the husband explains. “In terms of architecture, David took our East Coast sensibilities and tailored them to Denver.” With consideration of the free eclecticism of early 20th-century homes in the area, English Arts and Crafts elements were combined with American influences. “The direction had a great deal to do with creating a light-filled house on a relatively modest-sized site,” says Neumann, who worked with Deborah Slaunwhite, project architect for his firm at the time. “Typically, these houses tend to ramble, with moments of symmetry and balance.

This house was designed in a cruciform, or pinwheel-shaped, plan in which most rooms occupy its full width and have light and views emitted from two or more directions.” The exteriors of the home fool the eye as to their age and scale. Thick, whitewashed red-brick walls combine with Vermont gray-green slate roofing and a series of gabled dormers, intended to reduce the apparent size of the house and make the east/west portion more dominant. Inside, the hub of the house is the highly functional open kitchen, off of which the mudroom, breakfast room, family room and dining room are hinged. “It’s where most of the activity in the house occurs and where we often entertain,” says the husband, a self-described foodie.

Furnishings fell to Denver-based designer Melinda S. Douglas, of Douglas Associates, who had worked with the owners on their previous home in Denver. While that house had been smaller in scale, many of the items selected for it made the move to Cherry Creek. “Everything translated,” Douglas says. “The owners were so attuned to unassuming elegance that we were able to move the living room and master bedroom from one address to another.” Of course, new pieces—including antiques, upholstered soft goods, art and fine bedding—as well as custom finishes, were added to those rooms and others.

About the construction of the home, which includes four upper-level bedrooms and a gym, spa, media room and wine room on a lower level, Donald Scarbeary, whose Denver-based Capstone Construction has specialized in historic buildings for three generations, says: “It’s all about creating a harmonious environment. The molding details and coffered ceilings added a traditional feel, while the mechanical and electrical systems are all state of the art. landscaping into the house from all points of view and to orchestrate how certain areas worked for outdoor living and entertaining.” A kitchen garden is tucked away near the back door, and a reflective lily pond accents the backyard terrace lawn. “Design is not a linear process,” Neumann says of the project, which evolved over three years. “It tends to be somewhat circular at moments and reveals possibilities that may not have been considered beforehand.” And, with this project, it uncovered the perfect storm of past and present its owners were looking for. this Boulder family discovered, several heads collaborating on one joint project can yield the best outcome. That concept came to define the process of give and take and mutual respect that resulted in the residence they envisioned while still reflecting the combined talents of the design team they assembled to build it. “The owners asked important questions regarding whose mind the space was going to reflect,” says architect David Barrett, founding principal of Barrett Studio Architects in Boulder, who worked hand in glove with the owners, landscape architect Luke Sanzone and builder Tim Harrington to shape the house, guest quarters, studio and barns on a 65acre horse ranch. “During the process, we became so integrated that it was impossible to tell who was leading and who was following. It became all about co-creation.” For starters, they reached a consensus on how the house would relate to the exposed site, determining that the low-slung arrangement of modern pavilions designed by Barrett shouldn’t dominate the landscape. Sanzone, who helmed the landscape aspects for Marpa Landscape Design Studio in Boulder, collaborated with the firm’s owner, Martin Mosko, to reshape the property to echo the mountains. “We sited the house so, when you look out, you don’t see anything but open space by day and the city lights in the evening,” says Mosko.

Meanwhile, materials were selected to reflect the rural structures of the surrounding farm properties and blend with the landscape. The combination of stacked stone, rusted Corten steel, recycled Wyoming snow-fencing used as siding and board-formed concrete (the latter inspired by the local slipform silos) allowed the three buildings to merge with the environment. Softening the architecture, a mix of mowed prairie grasses and drought-tolerant plants, including wooly Veronica, hug the curved walkway leading to the entrance. “The palette of low-spreading groundcovers will become a carpet,” says Sanzone. The ground shape, an important part of the overall design, “is meant to be like a journey so you can relax and lose yourself on the way to the front door,” Mosko says.

The journey continues inside, where the concrete wall that defines the garage and slowly rises on the exterior intersects the main house to delineate the foyer on one side and the kitchen on the other. In the living room, a Mondrian-inspired pattern of windowpanes captures the mountain views while a second concrete wall with a small cutout intentionally obscures the vistas. “We needed to root the house both inside and out so it didn’t feel like it was going to blow away,” says Barrett, referring to the forceful local winds. “The wall creates a cozy gathering space that turns its back on the elements and places the emphasis on the fireplace and warmth.” According to the builder, creating the board-formed concrete walls, which he likened to creating art forms, was no easy feat. “It’s not as simple as pouring concrete over wood,” says Harrington, partner in Harrington Stanko Construction in Boulder. “You have to treat the wood with different applications, do multiple concrete pours and get the mix just right every time.”

The custom concrete-and-steel outdoor furniture, fabricated by Broomﬁeld Sheet Metal and Mobius Studio in Lafayette, was designed to withstand intense winds. The courtyard ﬂooring is from Arkins Park Stone in Loveland. The patchwork pattern mimics the windows by Hillcrest Glass in Longmont.

MATERIAL MIX Reclaimed white-oak flooring from Singing Saw Woodworks in Boulder lines a hallway that provides access to three bedrooms and a home gym at the far end. Inspired by Japanese sake boxes, the trio of vertical-grain ďŹ r enclosures by Custom Design Interiors in BroomďŹ eld contains the bathrooms. The board-formed concrete walls include cutouts for two window seats.

AT AN ANGLE A sloping ďŹ r-beamed ceiling unites the open living and dining rooms and the kitchen, which features white oak cabinetry by BKI Woodworks in Boulder and appliances by Wolf, Gaggenau, Sub-Zero and Miele. The custom Artois Rectangle Dining Table from Holly Hunt boasts an oak top and steel legs with a dark patina. The leather chairs are by Cassina from Manifesto in Chicago.

GALLERY WALK The view back from the master suite includes vertical-grain ﬁr walls, by RL Woodworks + Design in Boulder, ﬁlled with open bookshelves and gallery-style niches for displaying artifacts from the owners’ travels. A long linear skylight is broken by a series of wood slats.

Steel reappears inside in the form of fireplace surrounds, windowpanes and a four-story circular stair that starts on the roof and completes on a subterranean level where it provides access to a tunnel that connects to the guest quarters. “We had to weld two steel tubes together and rent a building off site to stand the thing up so we could get the outside patina exact,” says Harrington, noting that an old sugar mill in Longmont had high enough ceilings so they could stand the staircase up, add the patina and let the natural sag fall vertically instead of horizontally. The continual piece of steel was dropped in place by two cranes.

Mindful of the owners’ desire to keep the living spaces welcoming but minimalist, Barrett Studio’s Nicole Delmage and Callan Childs “picked clean-lined upholstered pieces for the living and dining rooms, with fabrics that are all about fine textures and muted colors,” Delmage says. Complementary hues appear in the form of textiles, rugs and artifacts collected by the owners. “The project worked because it was done as one big soup,” concludes Mosko. “The clients drove the project, but, because the architecture, the landscape and the people were looked at as a whole, everything became one harmonious unit.” L

home—think textured-plaster walls, wood-framed windows and gray shiplap siding arranged in a diagonal pattern—was happily obliterated in favor of a contemporary, Zen-inspired dwelling. “My intention was to create a sanctuary that would feed my soul,” says McArthur, a longtime practitioner of yoga and meditation. “My feeling is that the golden years should be full of peace and happiness.” Considering that her previous home in Highland Park, Illinois, measured in at 13,000 square feet, McArthur’s modestly sized Aspen retreat embodies her present life’s mission: beautiful simplification. Architecturally speaking, the new structure comprises classic geometric shapes clad in white stucco and eco-friendly, bio-composite siding (respectively, the brightness and warmth of the finishes could be interpreted as modern tributes to Aspen’s renowned snow and forest), while the open-plan interiors showcase clean museumfinished walls, bleached white rift-sawn oak floors and a rich wood-paneled fireplace—the home’s dramatic centerpiece.

“The lines are simple, and, since we only used a few materials, there’s less visual distraction,” says architect Bob Mehall, president of the eponymous Snowmass Village firm, who worked with builder Keith Webster, principal of Keith M. Not discounting, of course, the possibility that, in the context of such rustic terrain, where timber-heavy cabins prevail, the home’s very existence as a rare contemporary jewel is itself a curious diversion.

The home’s Japanese Zen garden, a natural extension of McArthur’s quest for peace and simplicity, is another unusual departure from the local flavor—but only to a certain extent. “By design, Japanese gardens bring the larger landscape into a smaller footprint,” explains landscape architect Jennifer Dolecki-Smith, of Escape Garden Design in Aspen. To reference the region’s emblematic mountains and valleys, Dolecki-Smith incorporated a few majestic boulders, while the sand component is a reflection of the mountain lakes and streams. A screen of native evergreens keeps the noise

Designer Kathy Hansel selected an antique Korean altar table for the vanity in the powder room to reflect the homeowner’s spiritual inclinations. and pollution from the road at bay, and the distinctive shapes of the twisting white pine and sweeping globosa spruce gracefully portray the wind. “All of these elements give this symbolic landscape a gentle sense of movement and an awareness of the passage of time,” she says. Such introspective ruminations also manifest in the interiors. The home’s Far East-inspired color palette, for example, embodies such Asian iconography as plum blossoms (represented by the lavender and plum accent pillows), Japanese cloths (actual vintage obis with a moss-green bonsai pattern drape over the living room club chairs) and ornamental Buddhist temples (gold touches imbue the rugs, upholstery and artwork). A gilded frame over the fireplace, for example, showcases quiet Balinese prayers written on palm leaves; interestingly, it also doubles as a television cover. “There’s a yin-yang, feminine-masculine quality to the décor,” says designer Kathy Hansel, owner of K.B. Hansel Interiors in Glenwood Springs. “But since the ambiance is tranquil, I think the yin—the female—prevails here.”

The home’s heftier antique pieces—a lacquered Chinese console under the stairs, a Korean altar table in the powder room (altered, no pun intended, for plumbing) and the living room’s adjustable, wooden coffee table (a repurposed Japanese shoji door)—help anchor the softness of the spaces. It could be that the home’s halcyon design achieves its harmonious vibe by embracing, of all surprising things, elements of dissent. After all, the modern architecture challenges its rustic setting; the commanding hearth heats up the serene décor; and the Japanese garden, planted with the region’s finery, transcends time and place, not just through its meditative intent, but also by virtue of its peculiar, high-altitude nook in a forest of Aspen trees. But Alix Kogan, owner of Kogan Builders in Durango, has noticed an accompanying trend. “In the last five years, there’s been a move to a more contemporary mountain expression,” he says. “It’s a mix of streamlined materials, clean trim and lots of glass, along with some more rustic elements.” The stone-and-glass house nestled on a small plateau near Durango that Kogan and company designed and built for a retiring dean of engineering suits this theory to a tee, quite literally. Overlooking a valley where elk migrate past and wild turkey roam, the house extends outward with a T-shaped form—the best way for the design team to maximize the 270-degree lake-and-mountain panoramas. “The big thing was to capture the views,” the homeowner says. “Originally I wanted to build something curving around the profile of the hill. But, when push came to shove, it just didn’t work.”

The house was also designed with an inside-out feel in mind, taking advantage of southern Colorado’s mild climate with a covered outdoor living room surrounding a tall fireplace. “It’s not something I particularly asked for, but the way the house is laid out, it became a perfect place for it,” the homeowner adds. “Now, I do have to say that I love it.” Coincidentally, the client was overseeing the design and construction of a highly energy efficient LEED-rated university building at the time his own house was being built, so the latter became a proving ground for some of the same sustainable principles. Thanks to ample insulation, solar panels, an Energy Recovery Ventilation system, heat pumps, water conservation products and other design elements, it meets the most stringent Built Green Colorado standards and is about 44 percent more energy efficient than a house built to code. The home’s most architecturally dramatic space is its double-height great room in the back, which takes advantage of floor-to-ceiling glass to accentuate views of the landscape. Because it’s tilted slightly outward, the glass façade takes a

STYLE FUSION The house rests on a mountain plateau with views extending to a valley and lake below. Loewen windows and glass doors allow the panoramas to penetrate the great room, and they lend a modern contrast to the rustic masonry. jewel-like form when viewed from outside. Inside, the canted glass makes the panorama seem to go on forever. Large overhangs off the great room, supported by slanted columns running parallel to the glass, help reduce glare and are outfitted with photovoltaic solar panels. The great room interior is also clad in the same locally quarried stone as the exterior, continuing the inside-outside theme as well as the mountain lodge feel. Ceilings are covered in select pine and floors in distressed white oak. Yet contemporary elements, from an iridescent glass-tile backsplash to exposed portions of the steel-frame structure, add modern yin to the mountain lodge yang. Most dramatic may be a floating staircase situated against a glass wall.

“It was designed to keep a floating effect so you could look through the staircase to the views beyond,” Kogan says. In close collaboration with the owner, Kogan oversaw the entire project, including custom cabinetry and even furniture, enabling a true synthesis of the creative process. In the master bedroom, for example, a platform bed with a custom headboard and floating nightstands answers to the owner’s vision. Kogan designed an alcove around the bed to emphasize its presence. The design segregates the home into public and private spaces. While the ground floor is mostly occupied by the common areas—a great room, dining room and kitchen—the master suite provides a retreat that feels Zen-inspired in

To this end, the master bath is clad in travertine and features a teak shower bench and heated towel rack. “I think the intent was always to have a warm mountain-contemporary home,” Kogan says. “You tend to mimic some of the traditional form, but it’s articulated in a cleaner way. We had a lot of back and forth and collaboratively came up with the particular look and feel. It’s about taking all those different images in your mind and incorporating that into a program specific for client and site. That’s our passion.” L

SUBTLE SEPARATION Just as interiors are divided into rooms, so, too, should this method be applied to the outdoors. Scott Byron, landscape architect and CEO of Lake Bluff, Illinois-based Scott Byron & Company, designated areas on this terrace for different activities. “There’s a small lounging space by the barbecue, a larger dining area and a more intimate sitting spot,” he says. “It’s a very large terrace, so we had to find a way to create a sense of intimacy through furniture placement and scale.”

Accordingly, Byron always bases his design concepts for high-rise projects on one thing—the scenery. “Everything you do on a terrace is about the views,” he says. “A successful landscape design is kept very simple. It’s not about adding layers of stuff so much as it is about taking the layers away.” Minimal and unfussy plantings, furniture and accessories work best, as shown in the scene at right, featuring Janus et Cie’s Amalfi II collection, surrounded by crabapple, lilac and boxwood.

WIND POWER Chicagoans know their beloved habitat isn’t dubbed the Windy City without reason. with a Category 4 hurricane,” he says. For this project, that meant heavy wrought-iron furniture and deep, sturdy wooden planters that allow the roots of the plantings to penetrate far below the top of the soil.

It’s not hard to imagine a night spent outdoors when the luxuries of the interiors are present. In the pool house at right, Sheldon Harte, principal of Laguna Beach, California’s Harte Brownlee & Associates, along with Irvine, California’s EBTA Architects, incorporated such elements as radiant floor heating and retractable doors that close to the outside on command. “The structure allows people the luxury of being outside but not exposed to the elements of sun and moisture,” Harte says. “But it can also be used as auxiliary guest space.”

COMFORT ZONE Fortunately for homeowners, no longer does the “outdoor-friendly” label mean you must sacrifice comfort. “Outdoor furnishings have come so far in recent years,” Harte says. “They handle much better, Los Angeles designer Kristen Buckingham’s first line of outdoor furnishings includes this intricate piece, shown in traditional teak. and there are so many more options in material and style.” With a plethora of possibilities—from canvas and acrylic fabrics to wood, wicker and steel furnishings to outdoor paintings, sculpture and lighting—transforming the outdoors into an extension of the home is effortless.

WEATHER REPORT Combating the everyday sun and moisture of a coastal Southern California property is best achieved through covered environments with means for temperature control. Every South Florida waterfront home begs for ample outdoor lounging space, and this Tuscan-style structure by interior designer Carola Hinojosa, principal at Miami’s Hinojosa Design Studio, and Miami architect Ramon Pacheco, of Ramon Pacheco & Associates, Architect and Planner, is no exception. “We aimed to create a very relaxed and calm atmosphere,” Hinojosa says. NATURAL GROWTH The uneven terrain of Colorado often brings with it architectural hurdles. In this case, it was an old-growth Ponderosa pine located centrally in the site’s building envelope. “Challenges often represent opportunities for extraordinary design solutions,” says Valerie Alexander Yaw, principal at Aspen’s Bluegreen. “We chose to preserve the tree and design the home around this great specimen.” Staying true to the environment, Yaw repurposed materials from the site and sourced local stone, boulders and wood for the outdoor living spaces.
