E D I T O R ’S L E T T E R

green shoots. I am thrilled to welcome you to the premiere of Luxe Interiors + Design, New York. After launching regional editions of this magazine in markets across the country, we are especially excited to fill our pages with design talent, ideas and resources from across the tri-state area. We’re kicking off this spring in pursuit of optimism, creativity and new inspirations. Fortunately, we’ve come across much of it this year, starting in January at Maison & Objet in Paris, where green hues seemed to dominate furniture and accessories, and continuing with an upbeat mood at design markets in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. The evening before I wrote this letter, we hosted dinner with a group of designer friends at San Francisco’s stylish Twenty Five Lusk. During dessert, Ted Boerner posed a thought-provoking question: “Do you know your life’s purpose?” Consider that for a moment while I share my response: “I’m not exactly sure and don’t mind being ambiguous about it.” Perhaps that’s because I consider uncertainty and curiosity to be welcome mats at the door of creativity and reinvention, an environment where ideas take shape and green shoots sprout up. All of us here, however, are quite assured when it comes to our passion for this magazine, and to serving our readers and the design community. Let me share an exciting project that will be in full bloom this November⎯ Maison de Luxe, our first national designer show house at Historic Greystone Estate in Beverly Hills, taking place in partnership with the City of Beverly Hills and the Friends of Greystone. DESIGN Just months after the one-year anniversary of his death, the fashion world—and, indeed, the world at large—is still reeling from the sudden loss of designer Alexander McQueen. His penchant for complex storytelling and over-the-top presentations challenged fashion conventions, and his absence reverberates strongly in the industry today. This spring, The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art will honor his legacy as artist and auteur in Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. On view from May 4 through July 31, the 100-piece retrospective will explore the Briton’s body of work, ranging from his 1992 postgraduate collection to his final posthumous runway show in 2010. Themed galleries such as “The Savage Mind” and “Romantic Gothic” will take viewers deeper into the mind of this dark genius. metmuseum.org; 212.535.7710

PRODUCT IN PIECES We’ve long been fans of the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail that go into the mosaics by Sicis the Art Mosaic Factory. Now, the Italian brand has teamed up with fashion icon Christian Lacroix for a line of home furnishings. The designer (who partnered with Sicis independently of his own company) drew inspiration from his hometown of Arles, France, known as a treasure trove of Roman tiles and antiques, while focusing on maintaining clean lines and comfort. The result is a decidedly Old-World-New-World hybrid; look for it this June. sicis.com

ART MIX MASTER Reconsider your concept of color: That’s both the request and goal of Carlos Cruz-Diez. This FrancoVenezuelan artist views color not as a static property but as an active process of the eye, and his exploration of color has been the driving force of his five-decade career. The first large-scale retrospective of his work, Carlos Cruz-Diez: Color in Space and Time, will be on view at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston through July 4. The show’s 150 works span from the 1940s to present day and include a dizzying array of media, from paintings (such as Chromatic induction 53, right), silk-screen prints and videos to room-size environments, architectural models and even a recreation of the artist’s studio. Elements of engineering, color theory, kinetics and craft all play a role in his interactive art, which often involves impressive production as well. mfah.org; 713.639.7300

In Summers in France (Gibbs Smith, $35), readers tag along as the Santa Monica-based designer and her family enjoy a visit to their home in the French countryside. First, Ireland sets the scene, evoking the quaint charm of the medieval town of Montauban via snapshots, sketches and journaling. The Oakland-based artist creates works that engage observers in the craft as well as the storytelling that surrounds it, such as her large-scale braided rug, which she started herself and had completed by gallery visitors. The center of all the action was the Riviera Resort & Spa, a historic landmark known for its intriguing wheel-shaped design and celebrity clientele (including Elvis, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin). BALDWIN HARDWARE IS THE AMERICAN DREAM COME TRUE—AT LEAST, IT IS FOR SEVERIN FAYERMAN, A WWII SURVIVOR AND REFUGEE WHO ESTABLISHED THE COMPANY IN 1946. IT HAS SINCE SET THE BAR FOR STYLE, QUALITY AND DURABILITY, WITH SEVERAL OF ITS LINES STILL BEING MADE IN ITS READING, PENNSYLVANIA, FACTORY, WHERE THE PRIDE IN THE AIR IS PALPABLE, SAYS SENIOR PRODUCT MANAGER MARY NICHOLS.

There’s a tremendous amount of pride in the craftsmanship and quality of the product line. You can sense it throughout the entire facility. The average tenure of our labor force in

Reading is probably 30 years, where sons and fathers work side by side. When we are the ones bringing a concept from cradle to grave—in the fact that we have the designers here and the engineers in the factory— it brings the whole story together. It’s important that we control from concept all the way through to when the consumer gets it on their door. The amount of man-hours that go into the Archetypes line, for example, is astronomical as opposed to a fully automated factory. It’s anywhere from 15 to 20 artisans physically working on the product after concept, so every order has 15 to 20 people touching it along the way. Baldwin is an investment. We’re not the cheapest hardware brand, nor will we ever be. We want to make sure that people’s expectations are exceeded when they choose to invest in us.

HEADQUARTERED IN BAY SHORE, NEW YORK, TEXTILE COMPANY DURALEE HAS GROWN LEAPS AND BOUNDS SINCE ITS START IN 1952, ADDING SEVERAL LINES AND A FURNITURE DIVISION TO ITS OFFERINGS. BUT, ACCORDING TO SENIOR STYLIST LAUREN PELUSIO OF THE DURALEE FABRICS DESIGN STUDIO, SOME THINGS HAVEN’T CHANGED, INCLUDING ITS FAMILYRUN STATUS AND ITS SUPPORT OF U.S. MILLS FOR SELECT COLLECTIONS.

As a hands-on, family-operated business, we can be nimble to trends and change directions as we see fit. We don’t have to answer to a

plan that is developed years ahead and can react when necessary. We buy a lot from domestic mills. We always go to them first. It’s a long-term partnership with the mill, and they can get us products faster than other countries. In our company, you can be a customer with a small problem or a big one, and your issue might wind up on the president’s desk. We are in touch with our consumers at the very highest level. We can make changes at the drop of a dime if we deem them necessary. What most interior designers are interested in are things that they don’t find everywhere else. So that’s the true key to the craftsmanship: where the mills are constantly coming up with new things that we have not seen before.

Kelly Hoppen Interiors: Inspiration and Design Solutions for Stylish, Comfortable Interiors (Rizzoli), $39.95

KELLY HOPPEN Kelly Hoppen Interiors

Hoppen often uses floating shelves to artfully display vignettes of frames and collected objects, all varied in form but united by their common color scheme.

The Kelly Hoppen by Welton home fragrance line was created with perfumer John-Paul Welton. Fragrance IV, from about $53; kellyhoppenretail.com

HOW IS THIS BOOK A DEPARTURE FROM YOUR OTHER SIX? It’s the way I approached the subject: standing very much out of the box and looking in. W HAT W A S T H E E X P E RIE N CE L IK E P UT TI NG T H IS B O O K T O G E T H E R? The book was a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work. From styling all of the shoots around the world, working on page layouts, selecting images, etc.—I have been thoroughly immersed in every part of the process. YOU’RE KNOWN FOR WORKING WITHIN A NEUTRAL COLOR PALETTE. WHAT’S THE KEY TO CREATING A ROOM WITH IMPACT WHILE USING NEUTRALS? You highlight and emphasize using texture. I am not against the use of color and use color frequently; it’s just that color is used to accent rather than as the palette. YOU WROTE ABOUT CREATING DISPLAYS OF OBJECTS. WHERE ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE OFFBEAT PLACES TO SHOP FOR THEM? I love finding items whilst I travel, coming across a small shop that may not look like much from the outside but, upon entering, is a treasure trove. Never judge a shop by its exterior.

This living-dining-cooking venue is emblematic of Hoppen’s skill in space planning, as the room is segmented into three functional zones while maintaining a sense of flow and cohesiveness. The monochromatic color palette is another Hoppen trademark, drawing interest from contrasting forms and textures.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST MISTAKE THE AVERAGE PERSON MAKES IN DECORATING? Poor space planning, resulting in too much or too little in a room. Always remember to plan, plan, plan—and then plan a little more if you want everything to be perfect.

“There are no rules. And if they did exist, they should be broken or at least put to a very tough test.” —Charlotte Moss

Charlotte Moss Decorates: The Art of Creating Elegant and Inspired Rooms (Rizzoli), $50

CHARLOTTE MOSS Charlotte Moss New York

THI S I S YO U R S E VE N T H B O O K . H O W I S I T DI FF E RE N T F RO M T H E RE S T ? In so many ways, they’re all very similar because they all speak to a philosophy of trusting your instincts about decorating. I want it to be a kick in the pants to compel readers to go do something they’ve never done before but always wanted to.

Moss designed this bangle as part of her Wanderlust Collection for Halcyon Days. Marrakech, $700; halcyondaysonline.com

In typical Moss fashion, all of the rooms in the book—which were created for past showhouses—start with collages full of the designer’s far-flung influences.

YOU WROTE ABOUT WOMEN OF STYLE FROM THE PAST WHO INSPIRE YOU. ARE THERE WOMEN OF TODAY WHO DO THE SAME? There are a lot of people in my business who are doing exciting things. I love Alessandra Branca’s work because it’s bold and beautiful and fresh. And Mary McDonald, her work is very colorful and alive. YOU WROTE THAT YOU’RE A COLLECTOR. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR COLLECTIONS? Oh my god, I have too many. My most significant collections are my paintings of interiors, my 18th- and 19th-century garden plans and my bronze perfume burners. And I think I have now reached the age where I have to stop. WHERE ARE SOME UNLIKELY PLACES WHERE YOU DISCOVER GREAT FINDS? If you’re a hunter, there’s no place that’s unlikely because you shop everywhere. I don’t care if it’s all those shows out in the Hamptons or whether I’m in a little stall in the Paris Flea Market—you just find things.

For this great hall, Moss drew inspiration from the English country house West Wycombe Park, whose golden-hued façade is echoed in the ochre walls. The focal point of this comfortable gathering place is a central table stocked with books and curiosities that encourage guests to linger.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR SOUTHERN HERITAGE SURFACE IN YOUR DESIGN? It’s not so much in the physical; it’s in the ease and hospitality that rooms express. If a room just feels rich, who gives a damn? What are you going to do to make it inviting? And that is the ability—which is a sixth sense, in my belief—to really make a room welcoming. And I think you can do that if you live like that. And I think Southerners live like that.

French designer Philippe Delzers created this elegant cabinet as part of The Appartements Privés for Élitis. Delzers envisioned a modern collection with an ethnic twist, referencing long voyages and African legends. The cabinet’s bronze-sculpted handles with glass cabochons appear like jeweled bracelets against a scratched-wood exterior powdered with gold.

“This cabinet reminds me of the great pieces by Eugene Printz from the 1920s and ’30s. I love the leg and handle detail as well as the overall finish. It looks like a very rich piece. The Fine Arts Building. “Sometimes it’s reproductions, sometimes antiques. If you like a reproduction, why not?” The foundation of it all is Swedish design, which he studied in Stockholm under the wing of Carl Malmsten, one of its originators. Bolander eventually settled in Long Island, where he and his wife, Nadine Kalachnikoff, opened an antiques business that introduced neoclassical Gustavian furniture to the United States. Currently, the unstoppable Bolander is preparing for the autumn launch of his painted furniture line, reflecting Carl Malmsten’s philosophy of incorporating the natural world into design. “That was his legacy,” Bolander says. “He was an extraordinary man.” larsbolander.com; 212.924.1000

Artist and designer Frank Faulkner stands in his Hudson, New York, studio, which at the moment is brimming with locally found birch trees—his latest inspiration—and the textural paintings from his Birch series. A design showroom offering vintage and decorative art, sculpture and furnishings occupies the front third of the studio. Opposite: Faulkner’s own home, located just steps from his studio, is a mélange of eclectic antiques, one-of-a-kind accessories and artwork from his own collection.

Throughout his 30-plus-year career, Frank Faulkner has juggled dual roles as an artist and an interior designer, much to the consternation of critics who

should be accessible, at some level, to anyone who looks at it. Isn’t a Picasso, among other things, a beautiful, finely made and therefore decorative thing?” And, Faulkner argues, just as the finest art possesses multiple levels of entry, so do the best rooms. “For me, visual comfort—scale, lighting, movement, tonality—is just as imperative as physical comfort.” Lately, the painter and antiques aficionado has become increasingly influenced by the natural beauty of the countryside surrounding his home and studio in Hudson, New York, which explains the creation of his most recent abstract compositions of white-barked branches against eerily dark, textured backgrounds. “I find the hyperreal eyes on the stark wood surface of the trunks to be as fascinating as a nightmare.” frankfaulkner.com; 518.755.3074

BARTELS-PAGLIARO ARCHITECTS, LLC Bartels-Pagliaro Architects was founded as a design-oriented studio in 1974. Our firm believes that practicing architecture as a performing art leads to satisfied clients, exceptional projects and the highest quality of construction. Everything that man builds is by definition “architecture.” It is our responsibility to instill in everything we conceive and build Vitruvius’ meaning for that word: “utility, commodity and delight.” Other firms may equal us with the first two qualities; we challenge them to match us with delight. The experience of architecture over the ages provides a rich and solid foundation for contemporary practice. Least important among its legacies are traditional styles. More important is the process of discovery, leading to knowledge, fueling creativity and resulting in art. We want to bring the idea of Gesamptkunstwerk (total work of art) to each and every project. This requires an excellence of execution that only our decades of collective experience can provide. Clients place their faith, hopes and future in our hands. Our commitment is to deliver a project that makes them and architecture proud.

Roger Bartels, AIA Christopher Pagliaro, AIA Nicholas A. Sajda, AIA 27 Elizabeth Street South Norwalk, CT 06897

FEATURES: The grand view from this Long Island Sound beach house is reinforced through a generous yet carefully detailed vaulted window. The simplicity allows one to focus on the sight; the complexity enriches the experience.

FEATURES: The glowing jewel box offers expansive views from every room across an ecologically sensitive shorefront. Regulations forced this house to be narrow and small. Our design process made this house wonderful and special.

How do you define a successful project?

What are the key influences in your work today?

What are your favorite types of styles to work on and why?

One that progresses smoothly in the client’s mind from conception to completion, and way beyond.

We continue to respect the tradition of architecture: to provide “commodity, utility and delight” and to achieve timelessness.

We often say that defining a style limits possibility. We work in our own style because it is genuine and honest. Its flexibility creatively accommodates our clients’ wishes.

FEATURES: The quintessential imagery of this Shingle-style house, nestled on a classic Connecticut cove, gives way to an ultra-modern interior of sunbathed materials and flowing open space. Context can be respected, but it is not a restraint.

SPECIAL ADVERTIS ING SE CTION

FEATURES: This space is the living heart of a five-pavilion private Adirondack camp-inspired residence on the shores of Lake George. We have literally brought the forest’s trees and boulders into the home.

FEATURES: The magnificence of this site is obvious, but the challenges of designing and building it were daunting. Luxurious living in this home is not the problem; providing comfort and confidence in the face of raging storms and swelling seas is an architect’s responsibility.

builder Jablonski associates When it comes to creating custom homes or embarking on massive renovation work for his exclusive clientele, Jeremi Jablonski believes in taking the road less traveled as a builder. His firm, Jablonski Associates in New Canaan, Connecticut, handles only two or three select projects each year so that his team and the client can approach the process as something more than just a job. “When you go high into the mountains, you hire a mountain guide; when you sail on the ocean, you hire a skipper,” Jablonski says. “That’s my role. I have a strict business discipline, but when you work with me, a relationship develops. We work together every day; we go on a journey. And it’s a fun one.” That approach has endeared Jablonski, a third-generation builder from Poland, to executive-level customers that expect a home project to run as smoothly and with as much attention to detail as one of their businesses. Jablonski’s team gives its clients all that and more in a variety of styles. “We’ve worked with one client for five years,” he says. “We did a custom Colonial house in New Canaan for them. Then we did a beach house in Long Island, followed by a modern project in Boca Raton. Not many builders travel across the country for one client, but that’s the kind of relationship we build.”

“Passion, experience and confidence are the cornerstones of my team.”

FEATURES: The versatility of the team at Jablonski Associates is evident in this dynamic dining room. Classic-style architecture blends seamlessly with modern touches, from the contemporary dining furniture to the inspired artwork to the edgy lighting fixture.

FEATURES: This award-winning home theater, designed by Theo Kalomirakis, combines the Art Deco style of the 1930s with the stateof-the-art McIntosh equipment. This one-of-a-kind entertainment experience includes an LED lighting system by ColorKinetics.

What influenced your early projects?

What distinguishes your eco-friendly work?

What is your overall philosophy as a builder?

My first clients were charismatic business leaders—and I learned from them. You take their ideas, and you try to structure your own business using those principles.

Our team does Energy Star certification. We did a restoration project in Greenwich and the final numbers showed that the house was twice as efficient as most brand-new houses.

I like to work with people who are fun to work with. For us, it’s about doing one project at a time and having a great working relationship to build the perfect home.

FEATURES: The splendor of a Jablonski home is on full display at this Colonial estate situated on four acres of land. The sprawling residence, which features state-ofthe-art technology, was awarded Electronic House of the Year honors.

SPECIAL ADVERTIS ING SE CTION

FEATURES: The use of Old World stone lends a dramatic complement to the dark woods in this wine cellar, which holds more than 4,000 bottles and offers space for private dining. As an ode to modern technology, the entire wine collection appears on an AMX touch panel.

FEATURES: The attention to detail and brilliant craftsmanship for which Jablonski Associates is known can be seen in this family room, which projects an intriguing mix of traditional design with modern elements, including the table and furnishings.

natural

history EostonE “Absolutely breathtaking” is how Eostone’s natural history artifacts are described by those who look to the past to create today’s amazing interior designs. For more than 20 years, Arron Rimpley and Gregg Whittecar have been in the art and antiques business. While traveling around the world searching for amazing objects to bring to their clients, they discovered the fascinating realm of natural history. “Each fossil is a snapshot in time and a timeless piece of natural art,” Rimpley says of their artifacts. Eostone derives its name from a combination of the Eocene period, during which the specimens once lived, and the dramatic layers of limestone from which their fossils are unearthed. “Because we are uncovering nature as opposed to recreating it, each piece truly is unique,” explains Whittecar. “No two specimens will ever be the same.” Eostone murals are currently gracing some of the finest homes, yachts and commercial spaces on the planet as more and more collectors seek to own one of these coveted artifacts. Not only are these fossils stunning, there is something about them that draws your curiosity on a profound and deep level.

Gregg Whittecar Arron Rimpley 2190 nW 87th Avenue Doral, FL 33172 info@eostone.com eostone.com

“our passion is to bring the finest natural history antiquities to collectors, architects, interior designers and museums worldwide.”

786.888.3333

FEATURES: This triptych (three-panel) mural measures 76 inches high by 88 inches long. Unlike other fossil formations around the world, where mostly fragments of specimens are found, Eostone fossils are often perfectly preserved in their entirety.

FEATURES: Clients enjoy owning a piece of history, such as this irregular-shaped mural containing a fossilized piranha that measures 43 inches high and 60 inches long. Natural-shaped murals are designed to achieve a floating effect when placed on the wall.

q a q+a

How did you get involved in fossil artifacts?

Which fossils are the most interesting to you?

Do you think the use of fossils as art is a growing trend?

We were designing a private art gallery for a New York client when we discovered natural fossil art. We immediately added fossil relics to our selection of antiques.

The most interesting fossils are the rare finds within the quarry—turtles, crocodiles or a perfectly preserved plant fossil, like a palm frond or palm flower.

Definitely. Part of the attraction is that these creatures lived 50 million years ago, yet we can still enjoy their beauty today and learn about the Earth at the same time.

FEATURES: Every Eostone fossil mural—like this one measuring 48 inches high by 71 inches long—is a labor-intensive project. The works of fossil art are prepared by hand and contain authentic specimens dating back 50 million years.

sPECIAL ADVERtIsInG sECtIon

FEATURES: The private quarry where Eostone fossils originate was once a thriving freshwater lake. This allows for a variety of specimens—including the turtle shown here—as well as palm fronds, crocodiles and a variety of fish.

FEATURES: A fossil mural provides the focal point to this living room. Eostone murals are available in a variety of colors, ranging from chocolate brown to bluish gray, depending on the stone layer where they are found within the quarry.

“I’m not the

kinda-sorta-maybe type.” Certainly no one would accuse him of that. Case in point: the circumstances surrounding the purchase of his jewel-box apartment in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan. For the record, Passal, principal at Robert Passal Interior & Architectural Design, wasn’t actually even looking. He just happened to accompany an apartment-hunting friend to see the place, which was being liquidated by the estate of a tenant who had lived there for 35 years. “The bricks were coming through the plaster,” he recalls. “There was avocado green shag carpet in every room. The kitchen consisted of a slop sink and two overhead cabinets. I said, ‘I love it!’ It had great pre-war architectural structure.”

That structure, however, wasn’t immediately apparent upon observation. True, it was “like a center-hall colonial,” he says, in that there were private quarters to one side of an entry hall and public rooms to the other. But whatever architectural details had adorned those rooms in 1927 when the building was erected

Homeowner and designer Robert Passal concepted the foldaway table as well as the long banquette from which a bed emerges. were long gone. So Passal’s first order of business was to restore its glorious period character. He designed all the ornate moldings, casings and baseboards to reflect the architecture of the time, as well as built-in cabinetry and shelving in the study and living room. And, recognizing his own unpredictable predilections, he says, “I kept elements—like the colors of the walls—quite neutral so everything could change.”

His approach to furnishing the modest but newly splendorous space was simple: “Buy what I like and make it work.” And, indeed, what else can one say about a living room that gathers together a custom velvet sofa and mirrored coffee table with a muscular 1920s French Deco armchair, a curvaceously feminine 19th-century French bérgère from the estate of flamboyant decorator David Barrett, a 1980s Dakota Jackson cabinet and two Michael Lucero ceramic foo dog sculptures wrapped in colorful yarns that were salvaged from dumpsters outside the Missoni atelier? In the dining area, Passal juxtaposes imperial Russian-style chairs with metal Jansen Directoire versions, and a $125 console scooped up at auction hovers over two hirsute Les Lalanne sheep sculptures. The furnishings span from the 18th to the 21st centuries, Passal observes. With his signature deep belly laugh, he adds, “I like to joke that it’s a little bit country and a little bit rock ’n’ roll.”

HISTORY CLASS Passal designed millwork in the dining and living rooms to mimic early-20th-century architecture. He also closed off the door that formerly led from the foyer into the dining room (where the console now sits at left) and hung an Indian-style ceiling ďŹ xture from New York’s old Rainbow Room in the living room.

PERIOD MIX A graphic black-and-white Stark carpet sets the bold tone for the living room, where furnishings span from the 18th to the 21st centuries. A 1920s French Deco armchair rests in a corner, surrounded by a vintage Victorian horn table, a custom antique-mirrored coffee table and a 1970s acrylic lamp set atop a vintage latticework end table. A transgressive rock ’n’ roll spirit certainly does inform much of the art Passal collects. Atop the Dakota Jackson cabinet are works by various envelope-

I don’t like anything shy.” Yet he is no snob either. And, honestly, it couldn’t be any other way with this designer. “I’m constantly exposed to fantastic things,” he says. “Occasionally I come across something I absolutely have to have, and I just can’t let it go.” L

It looked out of place alongside the grander estates, until two men from New York City bought the well-situated property and, realizing it deserved more of a house, hired Southampton-based architect James McChesney, principal at James McChesney Architect, to design an extensive remodel. McChesney, working with Sag Harbor, New York, builder Martin Mannix of CCMS, retained the simple structure of the original house as a central element, adding wings on either side to approximately double its size. “The owners were

very decisive and had a lot of good design ideas,” McChesney says. “They wanted to make the house more of an estate property.” Today, the dwelling has a commodious living room with a high, peaked ceiling, a new master suite carved out of a former garage, banks of French doors and windows, and an expansive roof deck. “We turned the old living room, which had low ceilings but nice cabinetry and a fireplace, into a music room that you now walk through to get to the one-and-a-half-story living room.” The homeowners, an attorney and an investment firm executive, had no desire to make a showy statement on the outside, McChesney says. They wanted a traditional shingled exterior that would meld politely with its neighbors. But the interiors would tell a different story, and that’s where architectural and interior designer Marshall Watson, owner of New York’s Marshall Watson Interiors, came in. His mandate: create a sophisticated, modern interior that nods to the

Or, as Watson puts it, “succinct.” The décor takes center stage against a backdrop of pale neutral walls, walnutstained and natural stone floors, and, in some rooms, wood-planked ceilings for warmth and texture. Watson, who was responsible for all the interior architecture and decoration, found myriad ways to bring the country vernacular together with city sophistication. The dramatic fireplace creates an intriguing textural foil for a custom willow chandelier and Shaker-style paneled built-ins with a pickled patina, which warm the room visually while disguising media equipment. A bold statement for any designer to make, but, judging by Scalo’s repertoire of residential projects that blend modern glamour with classic sophistication, she was right on point. Take the recent renovation of a 12,000-square-foot Greenwich home she did for a young couple and their three teenage girls, which seamlessly melds timeless elegance with Scalo’s fresh interpretation of the classics. “I want my work to be specific to each client,” she says. Tailoring her projects to fit the exact needs of a family does not happen without careful attention to detail. Scalo describes the interplay between client and designer as that of a theater production or the way she would approach a film. The total picture must reflect harmony and beauty. It needs to have the right scale and texture. The designer achieves this by looking at every point of view. Scalo observes homeowners in much the same way: By taking note of how they dress and live, she learns what they’re truly looking for.

So, when the owners of this Georgian-style manse first approached Scalo to helm the redesign of their home, she had already begun her process. “The wife looks like she could be a model from a Michael Kors ad, and yet she is the mother of three girls, the wife of a handsome husband and the owner of three adorable miniature pooches,” she says. “World travelers, they entertain frequently with extended family and friends.” Scalo played off their innate glamour as well as the home’s good bones and architecture. The underlying aesthetic was to be gracious and elegant. “Design is not a frivolous pursuit,” Scalo says, “but rather a means to instill beauty into our surroundings, which adds value to a person’s life.” This philosophy has practically been ingrained in the designer since birth. Scalo, whose mother attended the Rhode Island School of Design, recalls one outing when she was taken to a Frank Lloyd Wright house before she was even of kindergarten age and recognizing how its beauty could enhance one’s life.

A world traveler herself with an eye for fashion and an extensive background in fine arts, Scalo chose coloration, fabric, furnishings and artwork based on what she felt the homeowners would find beautiful. The result is a visual equilibrium and continuity from room to room. Much of the pieces were acquired at Scalo’s eponymous design studio and showroom, which she opened in 2000 as a means to fill the void of what she couldn’t already find in the area. Scalo herself designs a line of furniture exclusively for her studio, which includes pieces in this home, such as the deco-inspired dining chairs and hand-planed pedestal table, and the cherry wood farmhouse-style breakfast table.

Throughout the home, Scalo used a color palette that flows from room to room while respecting the classic linear architecture of the 10-year-old home. The designer employed a neutral base with subtle shades of silver, evoking sophistication and a sense of peace. Textured and patterned wallcoverings, such as the metallic Remembrance dining room wallpaper by David Goldberg, and unexpected infusions of color, like that in the custom chartreuse silk draperies that dress the windows of the master bedroom, provide the visual punch. “Many people come to me because of my signature style,” Scalo says. “I try to interpret their requirements through my own aesthetic sense. I understand them intrinsically.” Ultimately, Scalo’s understanding of both the lifestyle of her clients and the integrity of structure and site yielded a harmonious residence. “The home is associated with a standard of beauty and luxury that is typically Greenwich,”

Clean surfaces, sleek yet utilitarian hardware and a custom spring-green window treatment above the French doors add to the crispness of the traditional countrystyle kitchen. The light fixture is from Lynne Scalo Studio.

FARM TO TABLE A perfect adjunct to the kitchen, Lynne Scalo’s design for the breakfast room is steeped in traditionalism but made modern by its sleeker proportions. The custom, cherry wood farmhouse-style table is paired with Scalo’s Louis-Louis chairs upholstered in Jerry Pair’s Sacred Cow white leather. Three custom, Noguchi-inspired ceiling lanterns are artfully hung above, creating sculpture in the space.

SILVER SPOON Scalo’s combination of vintage (the antique Venetian mirror) with traditional (the custom, hand-planed pedestal dining table) with modern (glass candelabras from Global Views and David Goldberg’s antique silver Remembrance wallpaper) lends an ethereal feel to the dining room. The console at left, featuring mother-ofpearl inlaid in walnut, is custom, as are the deco-inspired dining chairs.

the designer says. What is unique is the modern twist she puts on it: It maintains its distinct style, both classic and modern, while reflecting the values of an active and vivacious 21st-century American family. “One of the most pleasant things that happened during the course of us working together,” the designer says, “was when I received a phone call from the husband and wife, saying how I truly captured the aesthetic, artful feeling they were going for and what a pleasure it was to come home to.” L

S I M P A T I C O A T F I R S T S I G H T . That pretty much defines the client-

designer relationship that began in early 2010 when Chee Jamison, after catching a glimpse of a project by designer Matthew Frederick in a magazine, walked into his studio and shop in Gladstone, New Jersey, and asked for help in decorating her new home. Though she’d never hired a decorator before, she sensed she needed one. After selling the house on a 40-acre horticultural farm she’d owned with her husband who’d passed away years before, Jamison moved into a three-story, 19th-century farmhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania—located just a few minutes from Peddler’s Village, the complex of restaurants, retail shops and an inn founded roughly 50 years ago by her late husband that Jamison now runs—intent on making it her “happy house.” “I made up my mind when I met him,” says Jamison of Frederick. “I saw his fabrics, saw his store and I knew we were on the

SITTING PRETTY A cozy seating area occupies one half of the great room, formerly used as an art studio in the 1920s. Designer Matthew Frederick chose the tufted Coco Settee, upholstered in Kravet velvet, and two tightback Lilly Chairs in Lee Jofa fabric to surround the metal-based and StarďŹ re-glass-topped Amsterdam Coffee Table, all from his own M. Frederick Furniture collection.

RUSTIC ELEGANCE Vintage-style pieces, such as the neoclassical Biedermeier chest from Councill Furniture and custom hand-blown mirror by C.R. Currin, were chosen to complement the rich history of the centuries-old residence.

That style is the “everyday elegance” that has become Frederick’s trademark over the last 15 years, both in the interiors he designs for his largely residential clients and in his line of furniture, accessories and lighting, which he markets under the M. Frederick Furniture and M. Frederick for Chelsea House labels. Clad in Bucks County fieldstone, the house (part of which dates to 1840 when it was built as a two-family home for twin brothers) had been extensively renovated by its previous owners, two men who’d given it a distinctly masculine look evocative of Ralph Lauren.

“The renovated house had dark colors that, while appreciated, were not reflective of the feeling that Chee wanted,” says Frederick, who happens to be a native of the area. “Refined feminine elegance was the goal for the entire space. But not anything too girly.” To brighten up the ambiance, Frederick removed dark shades and curtains, which robbed so much of the light and views, and installed softly colored full-length draperies in wool and linen. He chose a white European lacquer to accentuate architectural details and millwork, and dressed the dining room and living room—formerly an art studio added on in 1920 and used for many decades by local artist Paul Froelich—in white grass-cloth wallpaper. This expansive doubleheight space with exposed beams is the light-filled center of the house.

Furnishings throughout were chosen for comfort and elegance. Frederick incorporated numerous contemporary metal, glass and stone elements from his own collection, including a custom glass-and-metal coffee table, faceted crystal table lamps and a marble-topped and copper-finished side table, into the furniture plan. He grounded his color palette in hues indigenous to the area (gray and blue from the stone, red from the clay soil) and referenced them in the silk and mohair velvet, boiled wool and linen fabrics used for the upholstery.

Ensconced on a bucolic seven-eighths of an acre with its own trickling creek that abuts 300 acres of preserved land, the house features two patios and several garden spaces, which Jamison decided to transform into something English with Frederick’s help. “I redesigned the garden space to reflect a more even architectural symmetry,” says Frederick, who planted roses, specimen peony bushes, an espaliered pear tree and boxwoods around the home.

As the little girl who shadowed a legendary designer while he worked, Heidenberg had absorbed much more than she realized, and that design sense immediately kicked in. “Susan intuitively knows,” Paragano says. “And with her law school foundation and creative flair, everything she does is very thought out and rational. She knows how to put that hierarchical order together.” Heidenberg, now principal of Susan Heidenberg Design, used her own home as the starting point for her career in interior decoration. “It is nothing of its former self,” she says of her home. “We live in it differently. Accents of pale blue, inspired by the house’s exterior shutters and treillage, are also present in the library and pivot effortlessly into the family room color scheme. Above the fireplace, a show-stopping piece by John Little—acquired after the room was decorated—both galvanizes the family room and harmonizes with each adjacent room. A turquoise ginger jar sparks the gallery, while vibrant shimmering pewter wallpaper from Roger Arlington adorns the dining room, each echoing the blocks of color in Little’s painting. Having evolved over a 10-year time frame, the home is a mélange of modern, antique and timeless pieces the designer acquired at different times. Heidenberg, who loves to collect, notes that they include a compilation of family heirlooms, flea market finds, serious antiques, major art, French Deco, Italian Deco, 18th-century American and even pieces from West Elm. “My aesthetic is clean, comfortable and eclectic, with influences of 1940s French and Italian décor, and, naturally, bits and pieces of Mario.” L

SPRING AWAKENING Soft blue treillage wraps the exterior of the house, where an inviting outdoor living space features furniture from Sutherland in Perennials outdoor fabrics and colorful accent pillows wrapped in Quadrille. The round table is Giati and the chairs are Crate & Barrel.
