2010-2011 Lighting the Way

Strategic Plan

PROGRESS AND RENEWAL For Newberry College, 2011 was a year of significant progress and forward momentum – from academics to athletics and from campus improvements to increasing student participation and partnerships with community organizations. The College initiated and implemented a comprehensive strategic planning process that involved every major stakeholder group and featured a series of town hall meetings for the entire campus community.

EMBRACING CHANGE AND FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE... Newberry College welcomed one of its own, Dr. John Hudgens, the 19th President of Newberry College and former interim president (2010), into the role of acting president. Hudgens stepped in following the resignation of the College’s 21st President, Dr. Scott Koerwer. Dr. Hudgens will lead the College in every aspect of its operation and academic mission while the search for a new president takes place. Picking up where President Koerwer left off, Dr. Hudgens has focused campus attention to the implementation of the College’s new Strategic Plan, Education for Life –The Newberry Education Ecosystem, which will continue to elevate the College to become an institution of regional and national distinction.

Lutheran Values

TRANSFORMING LIVES

A sub-committee led by Campus Pastor Ernie Worman developed a statement that defines the Lutheran values that are a central part of Newberry College’s campus culture. The statement defines the core set of values as follows: the Lutheran intellectual tradition creatively engages the dialectic tensions inherent in the dynamic nature of human life. Newberry College will re-establish itself publicly as aligned with the Lutheran church and be guided by a set of educational principles that emanate from the Lutheran intellectual traditions. Among these core values are… Faith and Reason – • Truth is the ultimate objective of both faith and reason which is best obtained through the integrated pursuit of free inquiry, hypothesis and rigorous scholarship. In keeping with the school’s historic faith, motto and mission, Newberry College leads students to learn and respect the Judeo-Christian faith, history, traditions and supporting documents in the context of a pluralistic dialogue among the sciences, arts and global religions. Freedom and Responsibility – • Each person has individual rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and also has a corporate responsibility for others in an environmental and civil context. Newberry College encourages each member of its community to use the unique freedoms and characteristics of individual personhood as his/her fundamental contribution to citizenship in both local and global community participation.

Diversity and Inclusivity – • Community arises when people of widely diverse walks and degrees of faith, cultural backgrounds, genders, races and nations of origin recognize their shared humanity. Newberry College fosters empathetic knowledge of one another by modeling civil discourse, respecting each person’s dignity and individuality, and seeking to fully understand the self and others as equally-valued global citizens. Personal and Public Vocation – • Vocation affirms the sacred nature of the whole person: his or her personal and public relationships, divinely-revealed gifts and contributions to church and society. Newberry College encourages each individual to discover and pursue his or her calling and to exhibit faithful service to God and community in every facet of his or her life.

SETTING A NEW STANDARD FOR ACADEMIC AND LIFE ACHIEVEMENT The Newberry College community expressed deep appreciation to Pastor Ernie Worman and committee members Dr. Mike Beggs, Rev. Dr. Wayne Kannaday, Rev. Dr. Christina Wendland, and Rev. John Derrick for their fine efforts. The work of the chaplain and campus ministry, the focus we place on these values in our Summerland Honors Program and the various speakers and youth programs we host on campus are great examples of how we bring this values statement to life in our community.

Student Life

ENGAGING WITH THE COMMUNITY

40 Newberry College welcomes students with every passion and purpose – from academia to art, from publications to politics, and from discourse to dance. On campus, more than 40 student organizations, including Greek life, intramural sports, honor societies and student government spark conversation, build community and provide a creative outlet.

ORGANIZATIONS FOR YOUR SOCIAL, CIVIC, MUSICAL, SPIRITUAL, ARTISTIC AND INTRAMURAL PLEASURE

Revitalization

VISIT OUR CAMPUS

In 2011, Newberry College launched a series of campus-wide initiatives to further enhance its academic, social and cultural experiences for students, faculty and staff. During the year, the College worked with West Electrical Contractors of Newberry on a variety of capital improvement projects, while continuing construction and renovation on select buildings. If you have not been on campus recently, please visit and see all the improvements. During the year, as part of the strategic planning process, Newberry College renewed its commitment to moving to the forefront of higher education. Through a self-study required by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools), the College considered ways to improve infrastructure. This ongoing process is part of a long-term plan for growth and development of academic, social and athletic programs.

Fitness Center • Newberry celebrated a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new fitness center, giving students access to updated cardiovascular and strength-building equipment in a renovated facility. As part of the College’s Campus Wellness Initiative, the center provides the Newberry College community a place to maintain good health.

• The Yarborough Strength and Conditioning Center also opened with capacity for 42 student-athletes to do simultaneous weightlifting rotations. Student Welcome Center • A new Student Welcome Center opened featuring attractive, dedicated space for the new Admissions and Financial Aid Office. The center will serve as the gateway for prospective students to learn more about Newberry College. With new signage and dedicated parking, prospective students can now easily navigate the offices for student recruitment. These departments were previously housed on the second floor of Holland Hall.

Alumni Music Center • The Alumni Music Center renovated its front lobby and recital hall as the beginning of an initiative to improve the resources for the Department of Music. Currently the Center houses a 150-seat recital hall, practice rooms, a band room, offices, and classrooms.

Wessels Library • Wessels Library was renovated with a dedicated space for study and tutoring to help ensure student academic success and retention. Oakland Mill • Newberry College teamed with West Electric to renovate the historic Oakland Mill as student housing. Students moved into the facility in August 2011. The 29 student units available were two- and four-bedroom suites. The housing, located three-tenths of a mile from campus, includes meeting rooms, study areas and a game lounge. The Oakland Mill project was a catalyst to redevelop City infrastructure, including nearby Oakland Park. As the project is completed, one-third of the City will be redeveloped–a successful partnership between the College and the community. By bringing this historic structure into the future with updates and renovations, the College is investing in our students and benefiting the community.

Langford Center • A new, upgradable television control room was installed in Langford Center, allowing students to train on equipment similar to what will be encountered in the workplace.

Net3 Technology • Newberry College announced a new strategic partnership with advanced technology company Net3 Technology (n3t). The firm provides a range of specialized technology services and advances the College to a new level of IT support for students, faculty and staff. As outlined in the multi-part agreement, the company manages all on-site IT services and provides for business continuity and data protection. The agreement also establishes a full call center operation for the College through Perceptis, which provides 24/7 IT help-desk support for Newberry students, faculty and staff. Using the firm’s “plan.b” program, n3t taps into Cisco’s UCS, VmWare and EMC to provide an economical solution for off-site data protection. The plan also provides a secure environment through automated off-site backups. Graphic Design • Professor Tania Sosiak and students use new equipment and expanded capabilities in our Graphic Design Lab.
