President of Newberry College

Dr. Mitchell (Mick) M. Zais has been president of Newberry College since August of 2000. He earned an engineering degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; a Master of Arts degree in military history from the School for Advanced Military Studies at Leavenworth, Kansas; and Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in social psychology and organizational behavior from the University of Washington. He is also a graduate of the National Defense University where he was a post-doctoral research fellow in national security affairs.

Dr. Zais has been appointed by Governor Mark Sanford to represent the state’s 20 private colleges and universities on the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. He also serves as a member of the Governor’s Council for Educational Reform of secondary education in South Carolina. He is a member of the Newberry Opera House Foundation, the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the Lutheran Education Conference of North America, and the Southeastern Region of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. In the South Atlantic (athletic) Conference, he serves as Chairman of the Presidents’ Council. He also represents the private college and university presidents of the southeastern United States on the Board of Directors of the national Foundation for Independent Higher Education. Dr. Zais also serves as Chairman of the Lieutenant Governor’s advisory council on aging.

Dr. Zais has written and published extensively in the fields of organizational behavior, curriculum design, stress, military history and doctrine, and leadership and management, in such professional journals as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Armed Forces Journal International, Military Review, Parameters, etc. His opinion-editorial pieces, written while President of Newberry College, have appeared in newspapers across the state.

Before becoming Newberry College’s 20th president, Dr. Zais served his country for over 30 years as an officer in the United States Army, attaining the rank of brigadier general. As an assistant professor at West Point, he taught management consulting, organizational behavior, and leadership.

A paratrooper and Ranger, Dr. Zais served in a wide variety of infantry units, in Vietnam, the United States, and Korea. He commanded two rifle companies, an infantry battalion, a light infantry brigade, and served as deputy commanding general at Fort Riley, Kansas. His experience is in military plans and operations, having worked as chief of operations, plans, and training for an infantry battalion; war plans officer for a corps; and Chief of War Plans for the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Dr. Zais was a White House aide and served in Panama as executive assistant to the four-star commander of all U.S. forces in Central and South America. In Kuwait, he was commanding general of U.S. and Allied forces. He also served as commanding general of Operation Provide Refuge, the task force that cared for the 4,000 Kosovo refugees who entered the United States. Prior to coming to Newberry College, Zais was the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army Reserve Command, the headquarters that administers more than 200,000 military members of the Army Reserve.

Dr. Zais’s military awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Ranger, Airborne, and Combat Infantryman’s Badges, and the South Carolina Meritorious Service Medal.

His wife, the former Susan Fincher, is from Columbia and a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Susan’s great-great-great-grandfather was a founding member of the Newberry College Board of Trustees. They have two children: Bradley is an infantry soldier in Iraq; Ashley, is an intern coordinator for presidential hopeful John McCain.

Andy Carter

Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics

Andy Carter is entering his seventh year as the Newberry College Director of Athletics, having joined the Newberry family in August of 2002. Since taking the helm, Carter has tackled several projects in order to turn Newberry Athletics into one of the premier programs in Division II.

Carter came to Newberry after a 15-year tenure at Missouri Baptist College. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree from the NAIA institution, he began his career as an admissions recruiter and assistant baseball coach while working on his master’s of business administration at Lindenwood University. His degree completion led him to a faculty position as a professor of business administration and economics at Missouri Baptist, while at the same time serving the school as head baseball coach.

Carter took over as baseball coach in 1991, a position he held for nine seasons. Seven years into a successful coaching career, highlighted by seven consecutive conference championships, he also took over as Missouri Baptist’s athletic director. He served in both roles for two years before leaving coaching in order to devote all his attention to administrative duties.

Almost immediately upon his arrival at Newberry, Carter presented the faculty with the “Newberry College Athletic Initiative”, a long-term plan to secure future athletic success, while maintaining Newberry’s excellent academic record for its athletics teams.

Since Carter’s arrival, Newberry has undergone an overhaul of its athletic program, instituting a stringent evaluation process for all varsity sports.

The results were almost immediate, as the scarlet and gray have nearly doubled South Atlantic Conference victories in consecutive years under Carter’s reign. Also, for the first time since 1999, Newberry enhanced its offering of varsity sports, adding wrestling and competitive cheerleading.

Another stage of Carter’s plan is a complete upgrade of Newberry’s facilities in order to showcase the college’s new athletic vision. Ground was broken in the summer of 2004 on the Newberry College Athletic Complex, which will be the future home to Newberry baseball and other teams. Also, the Newberry basketball and volleyball teams began playing last season on a new gym floor, powered by a brand new, state-of-the art lighting system. Future plans include new facilities for the men’s and women’s tennis teams, and determining the best course of action to give the football facilities at Seltzer Field its first facelift in almost 20 years.

In addition to his duties at Newberry, Carter is an appointee to the NCAA National Division II Baseball Committee, where he serves as chairman for the South Region. He serves on the Newberry President’s Cabinet, under Dr. Zais. He is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Carter is married to his wife of 23 years, Rena. They have seven children: Aaron (20), a senior cadet at USMA-West Point, Becca (19), Beth (16), Jake (14), Rachel (12), Caleb (10), and Micah (8).

The 2008 Newberry College women’s soccer team will begin the season under a new regime as Karrie Miller takes over the head coaching position. Miller will look to continue off last season’s success as Newberry finished second in the SAC’s regular season.

“We are looking for a lot of harmony in the 2008 season. Coming together as a team takes priority especially with a new staff on board and 10 new freshman,” said coach Miller. “We are relying on the seniors to help with this process, and to come back from last year with an even stronger desire to win the conference title.”

In order to be successful this season, the underclassmen will have to step up and play key roles. The freshmen will be greatly needed since the 2007 team graduated nine seniors.

However, with the influx of 10 true freshmen, the return of three redshirt freshmen and two sophomores, the 2008 team will have an abundance of underclassmen.

Newberry will use the early contests to gauge how the season and freshman will turn out.

With a trip to Florida and Georgia to play a pair of matches in each state, the team will be battle tested before returning home to begin conference play against Mars Hill on September 17.

“The non conference games are a measurement for us before we begin conference play,” Miller stated. “We will be tested by some strong teams in our region and I hope that we are able to step up to the challenge early and carry the momentum of success one game at a time.”

Replacing goals and assists will be essential to this years success as the senior class from 2007 tallied nearly 70 percent of the goals and 50 percent of assists.

The team will rely on returning players Amberly Fowler (Taylors, S.C.), Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.), Lauren Carbonell (Miami, Fla.) and Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.) to kick off the goal-scoring production. Fowler, the leading returning scorer, will need to build off her experience from her freshman year to increase upon her three goals in 2007.

The defense will be led by 2007 second team all-SAC member Elizabeth Jones (Anchorage, Alaska), Sara Griffith (Marietta, Ga.) and Ashleigh Mayer (St. Peters, Mo.), who is returning from an injury plagued 2007 season. These returning players will make the defense the cornerstone of the team and give Newberry necessary experience that is needed against SAC opponents.

The goalkeeper position will be dominated by freshmen, as two redshirts - Paula Jackson (Mona Heights, Jamaica) and Megan Hrenchir (Lawerence, Kan.) - will battle for the starting position. They will be joined by incoming freshman Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.).

All three keepers will compete for the starting position and will possibly see playing time throughout the season.

The incoming freshmen will be the determining factor as to where the team finishes in the conference, as Coach Miller states, “I am looking for this freshman class to come in and be an immediate impact. I have faith in the previous coaching staff and the level of talent that is here at Newberry College. One thing is for certain we should have a lot of depth, which I hope does not allow the girls to be complacent.”

It may be a rebuilding year, but one thing is for sure and that is the pursuit of a SAC Women’s Soccer Championship.

Leah Barrett Assistant Coach First season at Newberry

Karrie Miller comes to Newberry with eight seasons of NCAA Division I head coaching experience, all in the state of South Carolina. She was the inaugural head coach for the programs at Charleston Southern University and Coastal Carolina University.

Miller earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Behavioral Science from Erskine College in Due West, S.C., in 1990 and then graduated from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C., with a Masters degree in Physical Education in 1992.

While at Erskine, she was a three-time NAIA All-American for the Lady Fleet and made the NAIA All-East Team four times. Miller was also selected to the NAIA All-Tournament National Team in 1987 and 1989. She was inducted into Erskine’s Athletic Hall of Fame during the fall of 2001.

Miller began her college coaching career at Gardner-Webb, where she served as an assistant coach from 1990 to 1992. She then accepted the position of head coach at Charleston Southern.

After spending the 1992-93 academic year preparing the Lady Buccaneer program for competition, Miller led the squad to a combined 24-13-1 record over the next two seasons.

In Charleston Southern’s first year of competition and her first as a head coach, Miller was named the Big South Conference Co-Coach of the Year.

After her success at Charleston Southern, Miller accepted an assistant coaching position at South Carolina and helped guide the Lady Gamecocks through their first three seasons of competition. She then moved to Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide to the Western Division Championship in the Southeastern Conference and a bid to the 1998 NCAA Tournament.

In 1999, Miller returned to the Palmetto State to begin the women’s soccer program at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. She served as head coach through the 2005 season, earning a 47-50-16 record in six seasons in charge of the Lady Chanticleers.

She was also named Big South Conference Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2003 for a total of three BSC Coach of the Year awards. Her 2003 squad finished with a record of 10-9-2 overall and were the Big South regular season champions. Miller’s Coastal squads were named an Academic All-American team by the NSCAA in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Throughout her coaching career, Miller has been heavily involved with the Olympic Development Program in both South Carolina and Alabama, serving as the Program Director in South Carolina from 1995 to 1998.

She was the founder and director of the Karrie Miller Women’s Soccer Camp from 2000 to 2006, and has served as co-director for multiple camps throughout the state.

Leah Barrett enters her first season as assistant women’s soccer coach at Newberry College.

Barrett joins the Newberry coaching staff after a stint as a graduate assistant coach at West Georgia. While at West Georgia, Barrett completed her Master’s of Education in Physical Education degree. She also served as assistant coach for one year at Coastal Carolina after finishing her playing career.

“I think it is a great opportunity for me to be an assistant coach at Newberry, especially working with coach Miller,” Barrett said. “Since I played for her, our coaching ideals are very similar and I look forward to a great season working alongside her.”

Barrett played collegiate soccer at Coastal Carolina for Miller, who served as the Chanticleers’ coach from 2000-2005. As a player, Barrett compiled several awards and team recognitions. She was voted to the all-Big South Conference second team and was team MVP her sophomore and senior season. She also served as team captain from her sophomore to senior year.

“Leah has a lot of positional knowledge and understands and believes in my coaching philosophy,” coach Miller said. “She will also serve as a good buffer for the players as they grow to know me as a coach.”

Barrett is a native of LaPlata, Md., and led Laplata High School in scoring for three seasons. She was voted to the first team all-county three times and as a senior she was selected as an honorable mention for all-state and served as team captain.

The season started with a two game road trip to the Midwest to play the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Newberry came back from the trip 0-0-2 after two double overtime 1-1 ties. The games would prove to be a harbinger of the things to come for Newberry in the 2007 season.

Newberry would earn its third straight tie when they hosted Clayton State. The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie. Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) scored a goal and recorded an assist for Newberry in the tie.

After a loss to Division I Charleston Southern, the team won their first two games with 1-0 victories over Lincoln Memorial and Erskine. Both games again went to overtime for Newberry. The scarlet and gray went to overtime for the sixth time in their first seven matches when they tied Catawba, 1-1 in their SAC season opener. Through its first seven games Newberry was averaging almost 110 minutes a match.

After scoring just eight goals through their first seven games the scarlet and gray exploded with a 10-1 victory over Brevard College. Tumblin, Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas), Adriana Farfan (W. Palm Beach, Fla.) and Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.) all scored twice for Newberry. Newberry followed up their win over Brevard with a 1-0 win over Wingate before losing, 3-1, to Mars Hill.

Despite the loss Newberry rose to fourth in the adidas/NSCAA regional rankings, the highest regional ranking in team history. The team also received votes in the national poll for the first time.

After a difficult double overtime loss to Tusculum, Newberry rebounded to defeat Lander University, 2-0 to improve to 5-3-4 on the season. The win was the first in a stretch of four games that saw Newberry go 3-1 with wins over USC Aiken and LenoirRhyne along with Lander. Woiwode’s game win-

ning goal over Lenoir-Rhyne gave her 101 points in her career, making her the first Newberry player to eclipse the 100 point mark.

Heading into the final two weeks of the season Newberry found itself right in the playoff picture.

But a tie against Pfeiffer and a loss to Georgia College and State damaged their bid. Newberry hosted No. 15 Carson-Newman in the final game of the regular season. After falling behind 1-0 early, Woiwode scored two goals, including the game winner in overtime, to give the scarlet adn gray their first win ever against a ranked opponent. Woiwode also achieved a personal milestone in the win as her two goals tied and then broke the Newberry record for career goals.

Newberry ended the season with a 4-2-1 record and 13 points in conference play, which slotted Newberry into the No. 2 seed heading into the SAC Tournament. Both the 4-2-1 record and the No. 2 seed were new team bests. In the first round of the SAC Tournament, Newberry tied Lenoir-Rhyne 11 and were forced to go to a penalty kick shootout to decide who advanced. The Bears won the shootout 3-1, eliminating the scarlet and gray from the tournament. The first round match was Newberry’s 10th overtime match of the season which broke the NCAA Division II record of nine overtime games.

The team averaged 99 minutes a match for the season.

Newberry had four women named to the AllSouth Atlantic Conference teams as Woiwode was named to the First Team and Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.), Sarah Barnes (Rolla, Mo.) and Elizabeth Jones (Anchorage, Alaska) were all named to the Second Team. Woiwode led Newberry with nine goals and 23 points on the season. The senior graduated from Newberry as the career leader in goals, assists and points. Beckerle played extremely

well in goal for Newberry recording 0.97 goals against average on the season. With her shutout of Pfeiffer, Beckerle gained the Newberry record holder for career shutouts with 14. She also holds the top four marks in the Newberry record book for goals against average in a season.

Barnes and Jones were both part of a Newberry defense that allowed just 21 goals in 19 games this season. Both are known for their defense as well as their ability to contribute on the offensive end. Both Barnes and Jones notched two assists from their outside back position. Jones was also named to the DAKTRONICS All-Southeast Region Second Team for the second year in a row. She is the first twotime team member in Newberry women’s soccer history.

And The Newberry Community Newberry College has an annual budget of over $16,500,000.

The College employs about 225 people—165 salaried and 60 hourly.

The monthly payroll exceeds $600,000 and monthly purchases and contracts average $700,000.

Over 900 students and 225 employees make purchases in the community every day.

The College sponsors around 60 cultural events each year—concerts, plays, art exhibits, lectures.

The College hosts around 175 sporting events per year with their 15 NCAA Division II teams—8 men, 7 women.

A number of off-campus groups use college facilities for special events.

For example, the SC Lutheran Synod Assembly and the SC Lutheran Youth Convention each bring over 400 people into the community.

We also host the South Carolina Women of the ELCA, a state-wide ROTC camp, the South Carolina Middle and Senior High Jazz Band Competition, the South Carolina Middle and High School Science Olympiads, the South Carolina Guidance Counselor Conference, several athletic camps, and many more.

Special events such as Homecoming, graduations in May and December, Convocations, and accreditation visits in multiple programs bring thousands of visitors to Newberry.

A study conducted by the Newberry Chamber of Commerce in 1998 concluded the College has the following economic impact on the city. With major growth in enrollment and accounting for inflation, these numbers would be significantly higher today.
