Prior to coming to Newberry, he served as vice president of IMI Resort Holdings, Inc., after five years as associate athletic director at the University of South Carolina. He served as USC’s senior associate athletic director from July 2003 to March 2006. Edwards, who played free safety for the Gamecocks and played in the National Football League for nine seasons, is currently responsible for the recruiting, hiring and training of sales executives and sales directors for IMI’s resort properties across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. He also assists with the IMI PGA Tour Player program and was responsible for the construction of IMI’s New York City office. In his time at South Carolina, he served as the athletic department’s chief financial officer and was responsible for the day-to-day oversight and management of all business functions. He oversaw the department’s budget, business operations for Williams Brice Stadium, the Colonial Center and Sarge Frye Field, new facility design, development, and construction, all venue concessions and food service, department advertising and multimedia rights, coordination of bowl travel, and many other operational aspects of the department. He also assisted in securing major financial gifts and executive suite licenses. He joined the South Carolina athletic department as assistant athletic director for development in July 1999 and was named associate athletic director in October 2001. He transitioned to senior associate athletic director in July 2003. Edwards played free safety in the NFL for nine seasons after being drafted in the second round of the 1988 draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He also played with the Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons and was a starter with the Redskins’ Super Bowl XXVI championship team.
Season Outlook The Newberry men’s soccer team will kick off the 2009 campaign and sixth year under head coach Sam Okpodu with a renewed sense of spirit. The memory of a thirdplace South Atlantic Conference finish in 2008 remains fresh in Newberry minds, keeping expectations high in a competitve league. Last year, Newberry played for the conference title in the regular season finale against Carson-Newman University. Though they came up short, the game served as a both high-water mark for the program’s success and the testament to the strength of the conference. “The SAC is always competitive, which makes every game do-or-die,” Okpodu said. “Now, though, we’ve put Newberry in the mix to be a championship contender and we go into every game with the confidence that we’re going to win.” With eight seniors bidding farewell to the squad after last season, a new group will be expected to lead the scarlet and gray. Senior midfielder Ben Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.), senior defender Scott Busbee (Columbia, S.C.) and junior midfielder/defender Marvin Torvic (French Guiana) bring experience to their roles as leaders throughout the season. Newberry will need that experience in 2009, as the season begins at home against Anderson University on August 27. While team may enjoy the familiar trappings of home, it won’t last long: the next four games take place on the road. Those road games should help toughen up a young Newberry squad before two home games that precede the start of SAC play at Lincoln Memorial University on September 23. “We don’t have a very easy start to the schedule and we need to do well,” Okpodu said. “We’ll battle for all of them.” Starting with Lincoln Memorial, Newberry will play five of the next seven games on the road, testing the team’s mettle and setting them up for a strong finish with a fourgame homestand. “Finishing with four games at home is a good thing,” Okpodu said. “We can draw from the home support and that should be very exciting. Like always, we’re going to go into all four with the mentality that we can win them.” As departing players take with them 78 of the team’s
2009 Newberry Men’s Soccer
108 points scored last year, several players will have to step up to fill the offensive void. Mottel, Torvic and Nathan Arroyo (Atlanta, Ga.) ranked in Newberry’s top six for points last year and will have a chance to lead the team offensively. Michael Bibbo (Florence, S.C.) and Tornubari Nyonebue (Rivers State, Nigeria) will be among a talented group Newberry players working on scoring from the midfield and forward positions as well. Senior Ruben Bravo (Camden, S.C.) adds experience to a solid midfielder corps, as does Justin Blomdahl (Pawleys Island, S.C.). A senior-studded back line will feature a mix of seasoned veterans like Jonathan Caratella (Rock Hill, S.C.), Scott Busbee and Samuel Cartin (Irmo, S.C.) and young talent like William Harbuck (Barnwell, S.C.). Stephan Bass (Fayetteville, Ga.) and David Contee (Sumter, S.C.), serve an important role two players who can play forward in addition to their work on the defense. Behind the defense, redshirt freshman Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad & Tobago) and recent transfer Pedro Velazquez (Wallkill, N.Y.) will handle goalkeeping duties. Eleven newcomers will don the scarlet and gray in 2009. Garrison Koplen (Woodstock?, Ga.), Colt Priest (Marietta, Ga.), Ryan King (), Adrian Ochoa (Atlanta?, Ga.) and Matthew Taylor Denny (N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.) are part of an incoming group charged with the task of keeping the team’s expectations high. “The freshman and transfer players can help us to our goal of going back to the championship game,” Okpodu said. “They can also help to turn the tide on those close nonconference games.” Last year’s chance at a conference crown proved that the Newberry men’s soccer team has the talent and the drive that gives them a chance to win any given game. A balance of experience and youth characterizes the 2009 Newberry squad that will bring a competitive attitude to every match. “We have confidence now. We feel as long as we do the right things we can win and we don’t expect anything less,” said Okpodu. “It’s not going to be easy, but we’ll battle to the finish.”

Sam Okpodu enters his sixth year as the head coach of the Newberry men’s soccer team after five successful seasons at the helm of the scarlet and gray. The 2008 season saw Okpodu take the program to new heights with a third place finish in the South Atlantic Conference with a 5-2-1 record in conference play and a 5-11-1 record overall, the best finish in the SAC standings in team history. Forward Debola Ogunseye was selected to the All-SAC first team, while senior midfielder Shane Abbott and defender Jeff Bell was named to the second team. Ogunseye was also named to the DAKTRONICS All-Southeast Region first team. Coach Okpodu lead Newberry to a 9-10 record overall in 2006 and a 2-5 record in the South Atlantic Conference, finishing sixth. Three total players were placed on the all-SAC first and second teams. In 2005, Newberry went 7-9-2 overall and 1-6 in SAC play. Okpodu led Newberry to a 9-7-2 overall record and a 3-3-1 South Atlantic Conference record in 2004, both tops in school history. The men also finished fifth in the SAC, what was then their highest conference finish ever. The success found in 2004 included two all-conference selections and one all-region selection. Newberry finished the season ranked eighth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Appalachian Region rankings, also a first for the program. In addition to compiling the best overall and conference records in program history, the men also racked up an eight match unbeaten streak in 2004, another school best. Prior to his work with Newberry, Okpodu boasts 18 years of coaching experience on the amateur, collegiate, semiprofessional, and international levels. He coached the Virginia Tech women’s Division I program for 10 seasons and he has served as a consultant for the Delta United Soccer Club, a professional men’s team in Nigeria. While overseas, he also guided the Nigerian women’s national team to its third African Women’s Soccer Championship in 2002. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Okpodu was a three-time All-American and still is the all-time Atlantic Coast Conference leading scorer with 193 points. He started all 77 games of his career, and participated in postseason play three of his four years. After his professional career with the Orlando Lions (United States Soccer Federation) and a stint at the helm of the Raleigh United Soccer Club, Okpodu returned to the Wolfpack as an assistant coach before taking the reins of the Virginia Tech program. His Hokie squads graduated 95% of its players. In 2002, Okpodu was recognized as one of 55 people to be selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary Team for his accomplishments as a player at N.C. State. The team was voted on by seven league institutions that sponsor men’s soccer as decided by the league’s 50th Anniversary Committee. Okpodu, a Nigerian-born U.S. citizen, holds licenses and diplomas with the SSF and the NSCAA. He fills the role of advisor and consultant for the International Soccer Network, Inc., based in Blacksburg, Va.
Brandon Colombero
Brandon Colombero enters his first season as assistant men’s soccer coach at Newberry College. His playing experience at Newberry and familiarity with head coach Assistant Coach Sam Okpodu will help guide the men’s soccer team in their campaign Newberry ‘06 to improve on a strong 2008 season, where the team finished 5-2-1 in First year at Newberry South Atlantic Conference play and third in the conference standings. “Brandon has a great work ethic and is one of those people who bleeds Newberry College,” Okpodu said. “I’m excited to be working with someone I coached and I believe he will help show the current players what it means to work hard on and off the field.” Colombero joins the Newberry coaching staff after graduating from Newberry in 2006 with a degree in communications. After Newberry he served as a director at WCSC-TV, a CBS affiliate in Charleston where his work helped garner an Emmy nomination. From there he worked as an account executive but missed soccer and found an opportunity to return to Newberry after the 2009 spring alumni game. Colombero played for Newberry from 2002-2005, starting at forward his final two seasons. He appeared in 28 matches for the scarlet and gray and registered six shots. Colombero also played under Okpodu his final two years on the team. “I’m very excited to be back at my alma mater and I’m looking forward to the season,” Colombero said. “I’m also happy to be reunited with my former coach and ready to get to work.” Colombero played at the high school level for Dacula High School in his hometown of Buford, Ga. He played varsity all four years there and was elected team MVP in his senior season.

2009 Newberry Men’s Soccer
2008 Recap and Results
The Newberry men’s soccer team started its first season in newly formed Southeast Region with a bang, finishing third in the South Atlantic Conference and giving a competitive notice to opponents for the 2009 season. Newberry found comfort in conference play in 2008, going 5-2-1 and trailing just Carson-Newman and Tusculum in the final standings, the best conference finish in program history. Newberry started the season with a 3-2 loss at home in a physical contest with Erskine College and a heartbreaking, competitive 4-3 loss to Anderson University. Newberry led 3-1 late in the game, but Anderson scored three goals in the final eight minutes to pull past the scarlet and gray. Newberry then returned home to suffer another close loss, this time a 2-1 defeat to Limestone College. Despite the losses, Newberry found bright spots in midfielder Trey Boyd (Victoria, Texas) scoring four goals in the first three games and Debola Ogunseye’s (Lagos, Nigeria) contribution of one goal and four assists. Newberry, looking for its first win and kick off South Atlantic Conference play, roared into Brevard College and downed the Tornados with a 6-1 win. Five Newberry players registered goals or assists and Ogunseye led the team with five points in the contest. The scarlet and gray then hit a skid with losses to USC Aiken, Clayton State University and Lincoln Memorial University to fall to 1-6 on the season. Newberry would recover, however, with a shutout 2-0 win over SAC foe Mars Hill. The victory marked goalkeeper Will Dieterich’s (Tampa, Fla.) first shutout of the year, adding to the keeper’s all-time career shutout record at Newberry. After a 5-2 misstep to Lander University, Newberry returned home to face off with conference opponent Tusculum College, then ranked 20th in the country in the adidas/NSCAA National poll. Led by a goal from David Contee (Sumter, S.C.) and two goals from Debola Ogunseye, Newberry matched Tusculum goal for goal, battling the Pioneers to a 3-3 tie. The tie gave Tusculum one of the few blemishes on the team’s 2008 season, as the Pioneers went on to finish with a 20-3-1 overall record, 6-1-1 finish in the SAC and a SAC tournament championship. Newberry would carry the momentum from the Tusculum tie into another conference match, this time with Wingate University on the road. The scarlet and gray’s offense exploded, taking the lead in the eighth minute and scoring four goals in the first half en route to a 6-1 win. The game offered a glimpse into the team’s prospects for 2009, with returners Marvin Torvic (French Guiana) and Ben Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.) scoring two goals apiece in the match. Debola Ogunseye chipped in the other two to move Newberry’s overall record to 3-7-1 and 3-1-1 in conference play. Newberry took a break from SAC play with the team’s first-ever meeting against a Gulf South Conference opponent and the team’s longest trip ever to take on the University of Montevallo. Although the team suffered its first shutout of the season, Newberry would return home in prime shape for a 40 SAC win over Catawba College. As the team celebrated Senior Day, senior Debola Ogunseye started the scoring in the 12th minute and would follow up with two more in the match. The other goal came, fittingly, from senior Kwame Gyamfi (Accra, Ghana) in the 73rd minute. With just two regular season conference games remaining on the schedule, Newberry took to the road for a 2-1 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University. Again, the Newberry offense started early with a goal in the 11th minute ## 18 13 4 16 19 7 10 24 12 22 9 15 5 14 17 23 21 2 11 3 8 6

from Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.). Ogunseye scored the other goal for the scarlet and gray in the first half and the team was able to hold off the Bears to push their overall record to 5-8-1 and 5-1-1 SAC, good enough for the lead in the conference. For his nine total points against Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne, Ogunseye netted SAC Player of the Week honors. After a 3-2 loss to Pfeiffer University, Newberry wrapped the regular season on the road against Carson-Newman. With a SAC regular season championship on the line, the team would fall short in a 2-0 loss. The team returned home for its second-ever SAC Tournament game at home, a first round date with Wingate. Despite a goal from 2009 returner Ryan Fielden (Tega Cay, S.C.) in the 70th minute, Wingate was able to rally and take the win 2-1. Ogunseye finished the year with 15 goals and 10 assists for a total of 40 points, leading Newberry in all categories. His goal and point totals ranked him second in the SAC, and 10 assists put him fourth. Ogunseye was named to SAC first team along with Shane Abbott and Jeff Bell (North Augusta, S.C.). Ogunseye also picked up DAKTRONICS All-Southeast Region First Team and NSCAA All-Southeast Region Second Team honors. Newberry can look forward to a solid returning corps in 2009 to build upon the impressive SAC record. Newberry will return four starters from the SAC Tournament game against Wingate, including Torvic and Mottel, two players who ranked in the team’s top five for points scored for 2008, offering a bright future for the scarlet and gray.
