2009-2010 Women’s Basketball
Season Outlook With the start of the 2009-2010 season around the corner, the Newberry College women’s basketball team is geared up for what should be another exciting season. Newberry will look to clinch their third South Atlantic Conference Tournament title in five years and their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in six years. This year’s team has been predicted to finish third in the SAC by the conference coaches. With the right combination of experience and new talent, Newberry plans to exceed expectations yet again this season.
COACHING STAFF Sean Page returns as head coach for the scarlet and gray in his second year at the helm. In his first season at Newberry, Page led the team to an 18-11 overall record and a 10-6 mark in the SAC. The team won its opening-round game in the SAC Tournament before falling in the second round to the second-seeded LenoirRhyne Bears. With more experience and knowledge of the players, program and competition, Page looks to push the envelope further in 2009-2010. Joining Page on the sideline will be first-year assistant coach John Lesaine. Lesaine is a Newberry College alumnus and returns to campus after a two-year stint at Valdosta State University. He served as a graduate assistant coach for the Blazers and helped the team to back-to-back national tournament berths.
THE TEAM This year, Newberry returns three starters and six letterwinners from the 2008-2009 team. These experienced athletes will be joined by a talented and well-rounded recruiting class comprised of five guards and five forwards. “We have three starters coming back and are going to remain competitive in the South Atlantic Conference,” Page said. “We’ve brought in some highly talented players who are going to compete for the returners’ playing time immediately.”
Returning Guards Newberry’s backcourt will enjoy the return of both of its guards in Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) and Janine Ward (Tallevast, Fla.) McKinney shined last year in her first year at Newberry after transferring from Brescia University. She was named to the 2009 Food Lion SAC Tournament Team after her performance in the conference tournament. McKinney led the team in three-point shooting (156 successful attempts) and free-throw shooting
(.825). She was also second on the team in scoring (14.9 points per game) and rebounding (7.2 rebounds per game). McKinney was named the SAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for two consecutive weeks. Janine Ward will also be starting her second season at Newberry in 2009. Ward contributed consistently with 5.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. She was second on the team in assists (3.3 assists per game) and steals (32) as well. Keisha Henderson (Columbia, S.C.) and Shonquilla Hudson (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) will return to provide depth at the guard position. “We’re bringing back two starting guards that have invaluable experience with this team,” Page said. “They have both grown into the leadership role brilliantly.”
Returning Forwards The lone returning starter down low for Newberry will be Anita Bulcher (Russia, Ohio). Though the other forwards have departed, Bulcher’s play will go a long way in filling the void. Bulcher had a stellar year last season and was named to the ESPN the Magazine/ CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team. She also earned SAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors during the week of December 15, 2008. Bulcher led the team in rebounding (8.7 per game) and blocks (22). “Anita will provide us with a physical presence that is unmatched,” Page said. “She is coming off a big season last year and her preparation for this season has been unlike anything I’ve ever seen.” The team anticipates the return of LeAnne Watson (Stone Mountain, Ga.). Watson missed last season due to injury, but had previously proved what kind of an asset she can be as she was named to the conference all-freshman team. Expectations are riding high on the impact she will make. Briana Johnson (Irmo, S.C.) will also return to Newberry with heightened responsibility. She appeared in 21 games last season and accumulated 29 points and 28 rebounds. She shot a .412 field goal percentage on the year and was perfect in her five trips to the free-throw line.
Newcomers
Sean Page brings in a large recruiting class to round out the roster. These newcomers feature ten new faces from a geographical area that spans from Chapin, S.C., to Queensland, Australia.

Season Outlook Ashley Holland (Duncan, S.C.) transferred to Newberry this season from Lees-McRae College. Holland played in 29 games, 26 of which she started, and averaged 13 points per game in her only season with the Bobcats. The other athlete to transfer to Newberry is Jessica Bearzatto (Melbourne, Australia). Bearzatto joins the team at guard after playing under Page at Brescia University. Bearzatto played two seasons at Brescia and helped the team to NAIA Tournament appearances in both years. The team will also add sisters Amy Browne (Maroochydore, Australia) and Courtney Browne (Maroochydore, Australia). Amy was exposed to the program last year but redshirted for the 2008-2009 season. She is excited about the opportunity to let her presence be known on the court. Courtney joins the team as a true freshman who played on the All-Australian High School team which went on an undefeated tour of the United States.
2009-2010 SCHEDULE A demanding schedule stands in Newberry’s path to a conference championship, but Page and Lesaine are confident in their team’s ability. The schedule slates 26 games in total, with 13 home games, 11 away games and two neutral-site contests. The regular season tips off on Tuesday, November 17, against North Greenville. Newberry’s in-region schedule is grueling, as they will see the Peach Belt Conference Tournament champion, Lander, as well as the Conference Carolinas champion, Anderson. “The schedule is certainly challenging, but it provides a good balance,” Page said. “A lot of the teams in our conference returned most of their players too and I know it’s going to be tough from top to bottom,” he continued. “We have a wealth of talent and experience, but the important issue is how we come together as a team. It’s going to come down to how hard we can work as players and as coaches.”
The fourth and final native Australian to join the roster is Leeara Creet (Brisbane, Australia). Creet was named all-state in Australia at the Under-16, Under-18 and Under-20 levels. Also joining the team this season will be forward Amanda Darnell (Marietta, S.C.). Darnell joins the team from Travelers Rest High School where she averaged 6 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game. Amelia Dozier joins the squad as a guard from Spring Valley High School in Columbia, S.C. Her performance was good enough to lead her team to a 21-1 record and a state championship title in 2009 as well as an invite to play in the Carolinas Classic All-Star Game. Devaneé Taylor (Norfolk, Va.) will join the team this season as a freshman forward. Taylor played for Seoul American High School and was named the team captain in her senior season. She was named the team’s Most Valuable Player twice and named to the all-FarEast team four times. Abby Anderson (Durham, N.C.) and Dana Gilbert (Chapin, S.C.) are the final two additions to the Newberry Roster. “The talent in our incoming class is remarkable,” Page said. “Most of these players have experience with championship caliber teams and I expect them to compete and make an impact on the program immediately.”

2009-2010 Women’s Basketball
Making a Difference... Newberry College women’s basketball team impacts youth and the community The women’s basketball team volunteers time to mentor and inspire area elementary school students NEWBERRY, S.C. – In between this season’s practice and study hours, the Newberry College women’s basketball team will be volunteering at Boundary Street Elementary School as student mentors. The players are all paired exclusively with one of the students and will visit them regularly to help them study and provide motivation. “The Newberry College women’s basketball team is helping Boundary Street students ‘Achieve Academic Excellence One Child at a Time’ by serving as positive role models,” said Timothy Hunter, the principal of Boundary Street Elementary School. “When the students see their mentor on a weekly basis in their Newberry College attire, it gives them a pride and desire to reach their goals as a student in one of Newberry’s finest elementary schools.” Shonquilla Hudson and Janine Ward read to local elementary school students
The players will visit their students once a week and spend quality one-on-one time with their students. The team will help the students with homework and their studies, but also hope to fulfill a higher purpose. “I’m thrilled that these young ladies have the opportunity to interact with young kids,” head coach Sean Page said. “They get to hang out and help them study, but they are also providing a role model for the kids. The kids will get someone to look up to; someone who is in college and inspires them to work hard and pursue their education and dreams.” The players are all happy to volunteer their time and value the experience. It is rewarding to impact the young students’ lives and make a difference in the community. “We’re all thankful that we have this arrangement,” Page said. “It is a great experience for the kids and our players, and sometimes I think the players might enjoy it even more than the kids.”
