But just because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.You Are Here is the energy-ful and play-ful call which David Finnigan and his team of young fellowCanberrans have made of anyone who has not yet managed to discover the wealth of activity and enterprise in Canberra. There are lively spirits worth celebrating here, and in the midst of our URBANcITY this team points to the source. This publication is not just an event guide: it’s an invitation to discovery. Canberra remains as it did from its inception: a unique combination of regional, rural and urban. In as much as we respect this land’s history, from Aboriginal to pastoral to planned capital, as we move towards Canberra’s centenary in 2013, there must also be a focus on 21st century Canberra. The future of our city depends on all those young Canberrans who will pick up on the energy, ideas and resources already here, and shape that future. Here and there is an artist run initiative begun by a group of current students and recent graduates from the ANU School of Art, who make use of non-traditional and temporary display spaces, such as living rooms and parks, to stage group exhibitions. The beauty of this initiative is that it not only provides temporary exhibition space for emerging artists, but also provides a more relaxed environment in which to show more experimental or unfinished work, encouraging artists to play with their ideas. For You Are Here, here and there will be taking over one of Civic’s vacant shop front spaces and transforming it into a sweatshop.That’s right, clocking in at 9am and sweating away until 5pm these emerging artists will be working for the most minimum wage – their love of art. ‘The Sweatshop’ will lay bare how artists work and in only one day each artist will (hopefully) create a masterpiece while you watch. Now who says art can’t be a massproduced commodity? Thursday March 10 to Saturday March 12 at The Mall, City Walk.
C L U B X EX H I B I T I O N stella-rae zelnik An exhibition of photographs by Canberra artist Stella-Rae Zelnik in the front window of Club X. Stella-Rae Zelnik is a recent graduate from the ANU School of Art and prolific photographer whose particular brand of documentary photography could be likened to Australian greats Rennie Ellis or Carol Jerrems. She is also active in the zine community, producing ‘We Are Not Obscene’ and more recently ’20 Dudes’.

Check in everyday throughout You Are Here as this lump of grey concrete is transformed into amazing eye candy courtesy of multi-talented artiste George Edwards. And the whole night culminated in a performance by THE LAST PROM, the only high school dance band that features the Antichrist and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in its line-up! The Last Prom is the opening night party for You Are Here. Come along and enjoy a disorienting night of bands, DJs, girls crying over boys and boys fighting over girls. Applespiel is excited. Their very first big project, Sexy Urban Design Team…Erskineville is being reworked and presented for You Are Here as Sexy New Urban Design Team…Canberra!! There will be lots more craft building, pipecleaner trees and paper cuts in the next month as they prepare for You Are Here and build a mini version of the Canberra CBD. Just like with the Erskineville project, you can come in and propose developments to the Canberra CBD strip – whether it is a change to infrastructure, a proposal to repaint a certain building, add a new public service, an art space, outlaw gravity, build a giant bubble machine, eradicate pigeons or overrun the street with them. It’s up to you – all reasonable requests will be turned into cardboard reality.

Award-winning playwright/performer Ira Gamerman hails from Baltimore, Maryland. Ira’s plays have been produced throughout the United States by companies in Chicago, New York, Washington DC and Ohio. In 2011, Ira won the JFK Legacy Award from the Kennedy Center, and he is now travelling to Australia to present his solo show Dated (A Cautionary Tale for Facebook Users) as part of You Are Here.

Walk away from the city. Escape the bus interchange, cross Northbourne Avenue and turn left. You Are Here, in a laneway café. Under the spreading branches, amidst the sounds of progressive musicians, people sit on milk crates listening to music, playing chess, eating, drinking and talking. You Are Here’s Carpark Festival is a one-day free festival of music and art taking place in and around the Melbourne Building. From noon until sunset on Saturday 12 March, the Melbourne Building laneway will host an extraordinary eight-hour music showcase curated by the Electric Lake Festival and uniVibes society. In and around this eight-hour concert will be a host of activities, performances and events by a range of Canberran artists and retailers. Take part in this free day of music and live art as artists and businesses join forces to change the flavour of Canberra. With food, drink, market stalls, performances and ephemeral art offered by retailers including Smiths Alternative Bookshop, La Posada, PJ O’Reilly’s and the Blue Olive, the Carpark Festival is a unique collaboration between Canberra’s arts and retail sector. Come for free, rock on your crate, play board games, share a pizza, buy a coffee or a beer, observe the creation of an original artwork, relax on a couch for a theatre performance, experience the unique mix of bands and DJs in the music showcase, and take a different look at the city you live in. 12–8pm, Odgers Laneway, Melbourne Building. In the mornings you head out on the road to race the climbing sun to the border and back; by night you’re giving dinks home from the pub. Sometimes you just wanna cruise into town, catch up with friends, see what everyone else is riding and where two wheels will take you next. Today is one of those days. Bring your most excellent ride – it’s time to show off. Canberra is one of the bike capitals of the world, encompassing all aspects of bike culture. On Sunday March 13 these various bike loving networks converge on Canberra’s CBD to show off their pride and joy. Townies, road bikes, fixed gear, single speed, bmx, mountain, vintage and more meet at the Garema Place chess pit in a mobile spectacle that demonstrates just how many folk are doing amazing things with bikes in the ‘Berra. 3–5pm, Garema Place Chess Pit, Civic.

LUKE CHISWELL Luuk is the name under which Canberra’s own Luke Chiswell produces his eponymous screen printed artwork. Originally based out of Collector, Chiswell stocks his range of tshirts – including the infamous ‘longface’ – in boutiques both in Canberra and interstate, with corresponding stickers and paste-ups seen on street corners most everywhere. The Canberra Roller Derby League (CRDL) was established in 2008 by complete derby novices and has quickly expanded to become a league of four teams with a fan base of thousands. Canberra’s rep team, the Vice City Rollers, has become a real force to be reckoned with after smashing Sydney recently at the AIS Arena and you have the chance to see them do it all over again. This time Victoria better watch out as CRDL and VRDL do battle on March 19. Tickets will be on sale at You Are Here, where you can see derby demonstrations, meet the players and grab yourself some merch before the bout. The time is 6-9pm Monday evening, the place is SmithDick and the occasion is an Overhead Projector Jam, just like in the movies. The movies, that’s right! I don’t know, one with Grace Kelly probably. With an array of overhead projectors pointed at every available surface, this hands-on event offers you the opportunity to try yourself out as a shadow puppeteer, animator or lo-fi VJ. Experiment and play with our selection of creative toys (or bring your own), or just sit back, relax and listen to the live sound track of blissedout ambience by artists including DJ Volume and Finnigan and Brother. Climate change is occurring at alarming, unprecedented rates. Actually, everything is fine, not sure what you’re talking about. Sea levels have risen seventy-five metres, covering all but the tip of the Sydney Opera House. No they haven’t. The internet is a thing of the past; people can only communicate by Chinese Whispers … these are those whispers. No, they’re not. Meet depressed Inuits, evil scientists, scheming real estate dolphins, bloodthirsty cartoon bears, lonely pig-faced dinosaurs and one confused but very enthusiastic performer. In 43 hot, wet and crowded minutes, Tom Doig will fight his way through the methanestinking quagmire of climate change science, politics and psychology, wrestling with sceptics, statistics and his own bad habits. Did I mention the spandex bodysuit? Selling Ice to the Remains of the Eskimos is part theatre show, part brainstorm-in-ateacup, and part intimate storytelling session. TH E BA L LY A RT I ST J A M Okay for this one we’re not asking you to do anything, per se. Like, come to a venue and watch a free show – we’re not trying to heap that on you. Don’t sweat it; all you need to do is exist in Civic on Thursday 17 March between 6–10pm and this one will find you. Unless you’ve got some wild unpredictable plans up your sleeve, you have to exist on Thursday 17 March – why not exist in Civic for a couple of hours that evening? Why, what’s the draw? Well okay, I’ll explain. The story is that the Bally – yeah, the Bally – is opening shop at 6pm that night. Doesn’t mean naught to you? Well the Bally is a portable circus tent owned and operated by the charming Highwire Events. It’s sorta like a smaller, sexier Spiegeltent, except free. Anyway, Highwire’s setting it up in Petrie Plaza in front of the Merry-Go-Round (like yes, that one) from Thursday 17 – Saturday 19 March, and it’s opening tonight. And we want chumps to roll by, drop past and pay their respects. Introduce yourself. Get some love, give some love. Join the Bally community which is going to swell up around the tent for three days like a gathering of bronze age tribes for the funeral of a king. Be part of that.Yeah. So what’s on? Well this evening, for your luxury entertainment, the displaced peoples of the Gadjo Family will be breaking it down with all kinds of unforgettable circus stylings, AND going head-to-head with wrestling demos by a cadre of martial artists. Wrestlers vs Acrobats? Have the stars finally aligned in your favour? Damn right. The Gadjo Family performance troupe is based around the concept of a traditional travelling gypsy vaudeville family, who turn up in town, set up camp, and earn a living by performing.With amazing performances featuring a combination of acrobatics, juggling, hula hooping, sideshow stunts, live music, storytelling, puppetry, dance and more, these performers create shows that are highly unique and compete on the world stage. But even when they are not performing, they live at the campsite, interacting with patrons, even inviting audience members in for a bite to eat, or to share a story around the campfire. The Gadjo Family are truly a piece of interactive installation performance like nothing that exists anywhere in Australia. 6–10pm, The Bally, City Walk, in front of the Merry-Go-Round.

TH E AT R E 8 : B L U E Y Phil Spencer’s solo show Bluey is a poignant and revealing story of family and political conflict, inventively realised through a mixture of standup comedy, thrash metal and a monkey puppet called Alfred. Bluey re-imagines the absurd but true stories of Phil’s father: an RAF sergeant who served in Iraq in 2003. With the help of a three-foot chimp Spencer stages his father’s shocking and humorous tales from a summer spent in Basra. As a co-operative, Re-Loved works with local designers who believe in the importance of sustainable fashion and create collections from primarily recycled or re-purposed materials.

For You Are Here, Re-Loved will be taking over a vacant shop front and transforming it into a fashion mecca.The space will be used as a studio throughout You Are Here, where designers will create and sell new garments in a co-operative pop-up shop. Designers participating in the event include; Lisa Barrett, Tamara Russell and Hanny Dewar’s own label, Hanny-d Creations. Under the label Tango & James, Lisa produces accessories, clothing and even furniture updated with her own fabric designs. Tamara Russell is a textile artist who uses recycled materials and free needle machine embroidery to create painterly textile designs.
