Canberrans should prepare to be surprised, challenged and inspired over five days by the performances and creations of some of our most talented emerging artists. The You Are Here festival is building a strong reputation for presenting new and experimental work to a wide and engaged audience. Last year, more than 9,000 people participated, and this year we’ve got our sights set on reaching 10,000 people during the festival. Importantly, You Are Here also provides critical professional development and career pathways for artists and production staff – creating a talented and experienced pool of arts practitioners who can enhance the ACT’s cultural growth and energy.

We’re living in a city that is changing rapidly. Most of the time these seem like large, monumental changes created by newly poured concrete and fresh steel. But with this change, the fine grain of our everyday interaction with these spaces also shifts. And in the background there is the ever present squawk of the cockatoo and the hum of the bush.

You Are Here festival is a small piece of this puzzle, exploring the spaces between; the urban and the bush, the domestic and the democratic. All with an eye to the playful and absurd parts of life that put a skip in our step and a twinkle in our eye. This year’s program brings you an incredible collection of artists, working across and between art forms, creating unique experiences that might only be able to exist with your help. We’re going to be occupying some familiar places steeped in nostalgia; with our main festival

venue The Club in the old North Bar on Northbourne Ave and a big night out in the grimy yet intriguing Verity Lane that runs behind it. We’re looking farther afield than we ever have before with a series of events in a private home in O’Connor and a residency at the Ready-cut Cottage in Namadgi National Park. Our artists will be popping up in local businesses, public spaces, laneways, carparks and theatres. Expect some spirited debate and some serious party. You can also expect a genuine commitment to accessibility, with more information about how to access the festival than ever. As always we would love your feedback on what we do. So come with us, follow us into the back streets, the suburban corners, the abandoned spaces and our favourite places. How to You Are Here

What? You Are Here is an experimental arts festival. There are a few things that make us unique: › Many of our events take place in unusual spaces like laneways, cafes, and carparks › You might not always be able to describe an event as ‘dance’ or ‘visual art’ because often our events are a combination of one or more types of art › You might be asked to participate in some way to make the events happen. This is usually very simple and won’t be scary at all – we promise!

When? The festival pops up between Wednesday 13 April and Sunday 17 April 2016. On weekdays, most of our events happen between 6pm – 10pm. On weekends our events start around 10am and can run until midnight.

Where? The Club is our central festival venue, located at 46 Northbourne Ave, Canberra City. Pop in to grab a program, get answers to questions and see many of our festival events. Our other venues are marked on the map at the front of this program.

Many of our events happen in public space, which can make them hard to find. Start by checking our map in the front of the program or on the website. If you’re still not sure, contact us or drop into The club our central festival venue at least 30 minutes before the advertised start time for directions. P A G E NO. 10

Transport Most of our venues are within walking distance of the Canberra CBD. We encourage you to take public transport or ride to the festival. Use Google Maps, choosing the public transport or bicycle option to find the best route. If you’re driving, check the website for a map of parking options near our venues.

Attending the festival All of our events (except for one) are free! Events which are ticketed are clearly marked in the program. If you would really like to attend a ticketed event but cannot afford the ticket price, please get in touch. Some events require bookings, especially those which are one-on-one or are for small audiences. These are clearly marked on the event listing. YHA Canberra City is offering discounted accommodation to festival guests – quote “YAH16” to receive a 10% discount when booking.

As Fleetwood Mac take the stage in Parliament House’s main hall, 96 armed eco-terrorists storm the building and threaten to execute everyone unless Australia stops climate change. Tonight. David Finnigan invites you into the high-speed, blunt-force trauma of Kill Climate Deniers. This is a trip behind the scenes of the play, featuring a dancefloor-ready mix of classic techno by Reuben Ingall.

The Affective Labourers Union takes seriously the idea that feeling is work - valuable work that might save the planet. timeofhex is Cissi Tsang, a crossdisciplinary artist from Perth who converts photographs and video into music via hexadecimal data. The result is a blend of world music, dreamy synths, spoken word and environmental sound effects. Turning inorganic code into organic sounds paired with hypnotic visualisations and live guitar to create an audio-visual experience.

Tracer is a live performance of material poetics, hinging on memory and poetic experience. It’s a collaboration between a filmmaker, a letterpress artist and a poet. A 60 minute narrative of the legendary duel between cyclists Greg LaMond and Bernard Hinault during the 1986 Tour De France, Twin Pedals is a site-specific sonic work composed by Shoeb Ahmad, centred around sinewy melodies, harmonic interplay and floating tempos, all illuminated by backdrops created by Kate Ahmad using the vivid colours of the peleton.

Unravelling explores the notion of personal storytelling; where do honest stories fit into our overstimulated lives? Clasp your light source close and venture into the labyrinth of stories. Stay for a night of tales, or leave when the light flickers out.
