A hectic cavalcade of some of Canberra’s weirdest performers will crash land in The Newsroom for a broke down cabaret. Horseface Ethel And Her Marvellous Pigs In Satin is a theatrical, camp and macabre celebration of ridiculousness. From a New Orleans funeral march to misappropriation of classic Disney songs to an excess of potato and gravy, Horseface Ethel And Her Marvellous Pigs In Satin will have everything you never knew you wanted. Join Horseface Ethel in sumptuous ﬁlth for a surreal night of fresh, bizarre performance that whips from melancholy to hilarious, draped in faded, broke down charm. Performers include cabaret lightning bolt Marc Robertson, the rock and roll terror of Venus Mantrap, fresh from texas, and an unexpectedly expected appearance from Horseface Ethel, and Her Marvellous Pigs In Satin. L U N C H B OX L I ST E N I N G & I M P R O A CT Lunchtimes during You Are here, students and alumni from the ANU School of Music present their brand of young, contemporary chamber music. All too often ‘classical’ music is immediately lumped with ‘high’ culture. The formal procedure of attending a recital at a concert hall, with allocated seating, and designated times for applause, can be alienating and downright painful. During You Are Here, local percussionist Yvonne Lam and her contemporaries are helping modern chamber music to be more accessible by removing this associated formality. Percussion as an instrument is not only appreciated for its sonic possibilities, but also its aesthetic and theatrical elements, which makes for a truly captivating performance. Imagine a marimba hooked up to a digital delay system, creating a multimarimba sonic illusion. Or six players scattered around a room, each with their own percussion setup of large concert bass-drums, metal pipes, and ‘found’ percussion objects, as part of a large-scale percussion ensemble piece. Feel free to bring your lunch and expand your musical horizons, all in the course of your average weekday lunch hour! Following the music will be a special, improvised performance by ImproACT, Canberra’s own branch of the worldwide phenomenon that is spontaneous theatre. Artists: Yvonne Lam & ImproACT

RESONANCE 1.1 Resonance 1.1 is a real-time performance installation series of movement and sound manifesting the textures of materials not normally associated with performance. The interaction between the mediums and audiences in this responsive framework creates an unusual performative space. For You Are Here, choreographer Adelina Larsson presents two works from this series. The ﬁrst, Resonance, places the performer upon a bed of pebbles, creating sound to be processed and manipulated live by composer Rueben Ingall. This new soundscape stimulates improvised movement from the performer, in turn affecting the sound with continual, dramatic tension. P E T I T E P U B L I C A RT Canberra has had an unfair reputation for investing bazillions in large scale public artworks and just plonking them down any old where. To take a different tack, You Are Here has invited a street team of Canberra artists to festoon their city with public art of the more covert variety. In cracks in the pavement, on windowsills and in flowerboxes, tiny sculptures and interventions infiltrate the city, going unnoticed to the masses, but rewarding those who take the time to look a little more closely. Pick up your art map from the Canberra Museum and Gallery before heading on your self-guided walking tour. You might have to search hard, but you also might find you never look at the city in the same way again! WO M E N O F N OT ES The brainchild of longtime Canberra devotee Jem Natividad, with loving local music musings from BMA Magazine editor Julia Winterflood, Women of Notes was launched to a joyously appreciative audience at Transit Bar in August last year. A couple of months prior, the Australian Independent Record Labels Association looked at the 2,000 mostplayed songs on Australian radio and over the month of June found only 18.3% were sung by a frontwoman. This is about on par with female APRA membership. Jem and Julz decided to help tip the balance with Women of Notes, a series of female singer-songwriter nights with a simple purpose: to celebrate the diverse talent of our local ladies of music. As Emma Gibson espoused in her review of the first instalment, “From folk to jazz to classic glam rock, it was a musical journey that made me feel both grateful and proud of the Canberra music scene and our local music goddesses.” For the You Are Here chapter, Women of Notes will become Women of Notes & Rhythm, with female DJs added to the bill to enrich the broader musical spectrum. CANBERRA PUNK & BEYOND P R ES E N T S : R O CK A G A I N ST B O R E D O M REVISITED Quietly emerging as a Facebook page early in 2010, Canberra Punk and Beyond has grown to become a crowd sourced archival phenomenon that shows no signs of slowing down. Founder Chris Shakallis was heavily involved in Canberra’s live music and alternative cultural scenes in the 80’s, and is now working to collect images and stories which showcase the scene as it was, 1977–1992, beginning with the early days of garage/punk and ending with Nirvana’s legendary gig at the ANU bar. For one night only, You Are Here invite you to return to that hallowed ground with Rock Against Boredom Revisited, honouring Canberra’s prototype indie gig scene of the late 70’s and early 80’s. We revisit and recreate that legend, featuring seven bands and a mix of original musicians from the period with new up-and-coming acts. A multi media light experience, featuring original photographic & ﬁlm footage from Canberra’s 70/80’s underground, and an exhibition of poster art complete the experience.

We love art that moves in the contours of our lives. On the grass and lanes of NewActon, artists will paint and sculpt their works live, surrounded by a wonderful array of market stalls and entertainment. Musicians from the Canberra Symphony Orchestra will give a presentation and performance on the life of Classical music, Omar Musa will perform poetry, bookended by bands and accompanied by food, wine, arts, books, and clothing stalls. Short ﬁlms will play in the NewActon theatrette and a kids’ scavenger hunt will run all afternoon. Finally, a secret, interactive art installation promises to make the event all the more memorable. By sunset, people may leave with the thought that art is not simply subjective, but gains life through the culture that inspires and perceives it. O N E WA L L , O N E N I G HT BEAM is a small collective of revolving participants working in a multitude of artistic disciplines. Initiated by John Pratt, Patsy Payne and Peter Jordan of the ANU School of Art, Beam facilitates various light installations of both a public and private nature. Their modus operandi is to go out at night and project images, video, animations etc into public spaces and onto buildings around Canberra. Some projections are crowd-stoppers, while others, more covert, will be witnessed by only the keenest eye. Each night of You Are Here will feature a video artwork by a different local visual artist, projecting into the bustling heart of the CBD for an unsuspecting audience wandering the city. Festival producers David Finnigan and Hadley settle in for a surreal afternoon of festival nepotism and desperate attempts to understand what is going on with Disney and their tween superstars. Finnigan tackles Selena Gomez vehicle Monte Carlo during a million-hour plane ride, while Hadley desperately tries to ﬁgure out what sort of perverse savage green-lit Mean Girls. They are joined by Seabornaward winning playwright and Lindsay Lohan anthropologist Jess Bellamy, bussing all the way from NSW to take a look at Li-Lo before things went so terribly sideways in Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen. Rounding out the afternoon will be some of Canberra’s ﬁnest comics, musicians and performers with their own unique takes on Disney’s best/worst teen movies. For You Are Here, Now Hear This will emerge from its home at the Street Theatre and take to the gorgeous historic courtyard of the National Film and Sound Archive. DON’TS FOR DANCERS The Australian premier of new dance and music work, Don’ts for Dancers, devised by award winning artists Nerida Matthaei & Nicole Canham. “Don’t introduce eccentricities into your dance which might be taken exception to by either your partner or others in the ballroom. It is this sort of thing that gives an excuse to the kill-joys who denounce dancing” Karsinova, 1925 p.56. When conformity is essential, the unexpected consequences of stepping outside the boundaries reveal themselves in Don’ts for Dancers. A wallﬂower, the belle of the ball, an overbearing chaperone and the male object of everyone’s desire meet in an imaginary dance hall where the cut of your dress and the way that you move can spell social success or suicide. Matthaei and Canham with Leah Shelton and Alex Bryce investigate the dos and don’ts of social dancing from the 1925 book, Don’ts for Dancers. Constraints, conformity, success, heartache and rebellion are explored in this 60-minute tour de force of live music and dance, where vintage meets Viagra and everyone’s looking for the answer to one question: is life better when we live within the rules? Canberra’s least reputable Poetry Slam once more joins forces with You Are Here! Like traditional poetry slams, Bad!Slam! contains mainstays such as poetry and misuse of the word ‘slam’. On top of that Bad!Slam! hurl in added extras such as The Master of Conflict, circus performers, and a brass band. Poetry Slam is a fast paced poetry ‘competition’. The competition is open to all comers, who are invited to perform a single two minute piece and are judged by judges selected at random from the audience. Bad!Slam! have a strong focus on using slam as a medium to get new writers performing their work, rather than the competition. They are world leaders in the number of first prizes they offer (at last count, 4!), which often include: fresh vegetables, broken action figures, capes, books and of course the adulation of a crowd of drunks. O D G E R S L A N E A RT F U N The historic and iconic Melbourne Building on Northbourne Avenue in Civic is one of Canberra’s earliest buildings, with Odgers Lane at its heart. In March 2011, The Carpark Festival was held in the Odgers Lane as part of the ﬁrst You Are Here. This event, with live bands, market stalls, coffee, food and art provided a taste of the kind of space that Odgers Lane can become. Now, the ACT Health Directorate has engaged Belconnen Community Service to enliven this space through the development of artwork to promote key health messages:

GUNPOWDER TEMPLE O F H E AV E N Paul Heslin is an Australian producer/musician, currently living and working in Melbourne and creating music using a wide variety of instruments and processes. Heslin is joined by Ensemble Evolution, an international percussion group based in Piteå, northern Sweden, touring Australia for the ﬁrst time this March. Consisting of Maria Finkelmeier (USA), Jacob Remington (USA), and Charles Martin (AU), Ensemble Evolution take elements of jazz and contemporary classical music to create new musical experiments by incorporating improvisation, new media, and music technology into their original concept of a 21st century percussion ensemble. Join us after work at the ‘Gunpowder Temple of Heaven’ and massage your senses with tea and fresh sounds, because herbal tea and experimental electronica go nicely together, don’t you think? Applespiel will be constructing a trendy and commercially viable radio show right before your eyes – with no more scripted material than Kyle Sandilands has wit and grace. Everything will be generated from the audience, what is happening in the room and other festival events. Sit down, tune in and ﬁnd your place in the network of jingles, radio plays, long time listeners, ﬁrst time callers, great classic hits, and ordinary Canberra heroes.

H U N G O UT TO D RY Hung Out to Dry is a new installation work directed by composer and artist Austin Buckett. The work is an adaptation of dripping techniques used by his mentor Peter Ablinger in Berlin, and his series Weiss/ Weisslich or ‘white/whitish’. Other inﬂuences on Hung Out to Dry include John Cage’s Water Music and George Brecht’s Fluxus pieces but the main driving factor of the work is the spontaneous rhythms of rain falling on materials and trying to bring a part of this situation indoors, and with instruments. Hung Out to Dry is for 11 selected instruments surrounding a room. Above each instrument is a wet sponge, which drips, and through the use of ampliﬁcation and ring-modulators creates indeterminate rhythms and melodies. This installation exists as both a performance and visual installment. Please check the You Are Here hub or website for daily schedule of performances.

BLAZE 6 Blaze is the Canberra Contemporary Art Space’s annual emerging artist showcase and one of the hottest events in the local visual arts calendar. Every year Blaze burns even more brightly, and this year’s installment is no exception. Blaze 6 features abstract and non-abstract painting, crafty techniques, metal sculpture, site-speciﬁc interventions, domestic materials and photographic screen-prints. Despite these diverse materials and interests, there are some common threads tying this exciting show together - besides, of course, the fact that it’s all cutting-edge contemporary art by fantastic local emerging artists.
