World Editions promotes voices from around the globe by publishing books from many different countries and languages in English translation. Through our work we aim to enhance dialogue between cultures, foster new connections, and open doors which may otherwise have remained closed.
We publish high quality novels and narrative non fiction books with a personal angle. Our aim is to uncover the pearls of each and every language territory, works often successfully published in their own regions, and introduce them to the English language reader. We publish voice driven books that touch upon urgent and engaged, relevant universal—outward looking narratives, but always from the point of view of the individual and the personal experiences of people in different countries. We publish books that matter, introducing the reader to a world they may not yet have been able to explore in real life. Books that have the power to move you and may change your way of seeing things.
World Editions publishes long established authors, such as winner of the Alternative Nobel Prize, Maryse Condé, and the internationally acclaimed Juli Zeh, alongside rising stars such as Pilar Quintana (National Book Award finalist), Jaap Robben (longlisted for the International Booker Prize), and Linda Boström Knausgård (longlisted for the National Book Award).
In 2023 World Editions celebrates the 5 year anniversary since its US launch and existence as an international com pany. To date we are proud to have published 78 books, from a total of 32 countries and 17 languages, and we hope to add many more in the coming years.

The all-consuming desire to preserve
Upon her mother’s death, Paule Rojas, a vegetarian city dweller, returns to the chicken farm where she grew up. Pressured to fulfil her mother’s last request, Paule rediscovers pleasure and meaning in running the old family business. Yet, eager to bring something of herself to a family tradition, Paule embarks on increasingly intricate ways of helping the chickens to self actualize before their deaths. She records the chickens’ life stories, adding them to the labels that decorate the vacuum packed meat sent off to market—an individual biography for every chicken. But not all runs smooth in her childhood village; Paule finds she has few friends and many enemies. She is forced to spread her wings, relocate her livestock, and oversee the construction of an urban farm of never before seen practices and proportions.

The Drinker of Horizons Mia Couto
translated from the Portuguese by David Brookshaw
ISBN 978 1 912987 37 5 €19.99 264 pp fiction trade paperback
A story of love and war in nineteenthcentury Africa
During the colonization of the African Kingdom of Gaza, a young local woman Imani and the Portuguese sergeant Germano de Melo share an unexpected love. While Germano is left behind in Africa, serving with the Portuguese military, Imani is enlisted as interpreter to the imprisoned emperor of Gaza, Ngungunyane, on the long voyage to Lisbon. For Ngungunyane and his seven wives, it will be a journey of no return, whereas Imani will come back only after a decade long odyssey through the Portuguese empire at the turn of the nineteenth century. As Mia Couto depicts the beauty and terror of war and love, and reveals the devastation of a profoundly unequal clash of cultures, he gives a uniquely personal voice to those silenced by the horrors of colonialism.
“Couto’s protagonist’s remain consistently fascinating.”
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

Woman of the Ashes and The Sword and the Spear were released recently to critical acclaim.

My Mother Says Stine Pilgaard
translated from the Danish by Hunter Simpson
ISBN 978 1 912987 40 5 €17.99 160 pp fiction trade paperback
When good advice is all you need
The narrator’s long term girlfriend has just broken things off, forcing her to move back in with her father, a Pink Floyd–loving priest. While she desperately tries to convince her girlfriend to reconsider, the rest of the world bombards her with advice: from her childhood friend Mulle to her kindly therapist to her overbearing mother and card playing father. Bumbling through the fog of disillusionment, the narrator gives herself permission to grieve, philosophize, and be generally outrageous until at last she sees a light at the end of the tunnel. My Mother Says is a compendium of conversations between people who talk past one another in a universe of misplaced good intentions. In this whirlwind of memories, confessions, temper tantrums, and declarations of love, Pilgaard’s sheer affection for her characters turns the pain of a broken heart into a heartwarming comedy of errors.
“Whirls with elegance and energy.”
POLITIKEN
Stine Pilgaard is a graduate of the Danish Writers’ Academy and the University of Copenhagen. Her first novel, My Mother Says, was a critical and commercial success in Denmark, securing its author the Bodil and Jørgen Munch Christensen Award. The Land of Short Sentences was an instant bestseller and critics’ favorite. It won the prestigious Weekendavisen Literature Prize and the Danish Booksellers’ Association’s Golden Laurels Award.

Everybody needs good neighbors
Fleeing stay at home orders in the big city, Dora and her dog move to the countryside. She knows that Bracken, a village in the middle of nowhere, isn’t the idyll most citydwellers dream of, but she’s desperate for space and a change of scene. The quaint old house she’s saved up for needs work, weeds have taken over the yard, and her skinhead neighbor fits all the stereotypes. Just what is Dora really looking for? Distance from her boyfriend Robert, who’s climate activism has crossed into obsession? Refuge from her inner turmoil? Clarity on how the whole world got so messed up? As Dora tries to keep her thoughts and demons in check, surprising things start happening all around her. Juli Zeh’s epic new novel explores our present predicaments, biases, weaknesses, and fears, but—above all—it reveals the strengths that come to light when we dare to be human.
“Wit, compassion, and a large portion of hope for a more conciliatory society.” ZDF
Juli Zeh holds a doctorate in international law. She is one of Germany’s most successful authors. Her debut novel Eagles and Angels was an international bestseller and was awarded the Deutscher Book Prize, and since then her books have been translated into 35 languages. Her latest novel, New Year, was a finalist for the 2022 PEN Translation Prize. She has been award ed myriad prizes for her work, including the Carl Amery Literature Prize, the Thomas Mann Prize, and the Order of Merit .
