Anton Krupicka has run the equivalent of around the world twice, or 80,000 kilometers, in a 17-year running career that has established him as one of the world’s finest ultradistance runners. And he has done it in recent years in a running shoe that flies in the face of conventional wisdom that says more is better when it comes to foot support. Krupicka, 28, started wearing a New Balance shoe after suffering 12 stress fractures in six years. He said the decision has changed his running life.

4 2012 Q2 Newsletter

“I had custom orthodics in conventional shoes but kept getting injured so I researched on the internet the whole idea about minimalist footwear and I haven’t had a stress fracture since I have changed over,” said Krupicka, who is visiting Australia for the first time. “It took me a few months to work down to the New Balance. You will notice recent shoes are flatter and lighter as the industry has shifted in the last couple of years. Every major company has addressed the concept of a more flexible low to

the ground shoe and they wouldn’t be doing it if there wasn’t demand.” Krupicka is aware of the great Ethiopian Olympic marathon duel gold medallist in Abebe Bikila, who ran barefoot to win his first gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Four years later at Tokyo, Bikila was wearing adidas shoes when he won but as Krupicka pointed out, they would have been very flat. Krupicka’s long hair and beard are regularly seen in the mountains of Colorado which he now calls home

after growing up on a farm in the Great Plains, Nebraska. When choosing a university he naturally went for Colorado where he completed his BA in 2005, double majoring in physics and philosophy before completing a second BA in geology. For the record he can run a marathon in around the 2:30 minute mark if specifically training for the event, although four marathons in a week around 15 hours holds more appeal for a man who runs around 250km a week over 20-25 hours.

It all began for Krupicka at age 12 when he won a mile race at school during physical education. Never that proficient at other sports he suddenly found his calling and has been running ever since. So how does he know how far he has run? Because he has kept a record of every training run and race since age 15, given running is his life. He makes enough money from winning races such as the Leadville 100 (twice) the Rocky Raccoon 100 miler (three times) the White River 50 miler (twice) and the Estes Park Marathon, to maintain his

simplistic lifestyle which sees him living in his truck on the Rockies during the US summer. “I live out of a truck during summer, just bumming around staying at different running spots in the mountains. It’s what I love to do and I’m single and free,” said Krupicka. His aim is to return to Australia in May, 2013, the race in the Blue Mountains in an ultra-distance race.

am running on, the Minimus shoe is extremely versatile and durable, and provides great cushioning to help me run long distances despite being light weight.” “The shoe will provide me with the perfect preparation for the year ahead, and will be one of the first things I pack in my suitcase for the London Olympics.” Jason Agosta - Leading sports podiatrist “The Good Form Running range will appeal to everyday runners who demand the latest trend in performance running. Due to its lightweight, low profile and flexible fit, the foot can operate in a more mobile manner similar to barefoot

walking and running.” “Gradually shifting to these running shoes brings you closer to the ground, strengthens the body, and improves efficiency and stability.” “There should be a gradual build up in time to transition from traditional running shoes due to the greater loads placed on the foot, ankle and lower limb.” Take-out New Balance is the leader in the market trend towards lightweight/low profile running Why is this important Improved form/efficiency, build stronger lower leg muscles, injury prevention

In the past 40 years running shoe technology has changed significantly, which has subsequently affected our running technique. Gone are the days when shoes were thick, wide and soft. These days expect to find a whole new generation of footwear that are lighter, more flexible and with thinner soles. ‘Minimalist’ footwear, as it is known, is the latest trend in running footwear and, rightly so, since the benefits for runners are enormous. New Balance Minimalist footwear allows a more natural motion; a bit like running barefoot, where you can ‘feel’ the surface you’re running on, whether it’s a treadmill or the pavement. This natural ‘feel’ activates

the body’s instinctive protective mechanisms, giving you stability and also contributing to a more midfoot strike. Biomechanically, landing on the mid-foot is a more efficient way to run, and the closer your foot is to the ground, the easier it is to achieve this. The problem with modern conventional running shoes are that these thicker, softer midsoles contribute to a loss of sensory perception of the surface and, therefore, contribute to a more passive foot-strike. The result being greater heel strike and greater initial impact, which – in the longer term – can contribute to the occurrence of knee and leg injuries.

Using thin-soled flexible footwear promotes similar benefits to barefoot running, assists in recruiting muscular control and muscle strength. Being closer to the ground (by lessening the drop between the heel and forefoot or removing the ‘drop’ all together) also helps strengthen the calf muscles. Prospective studies on distance runners have shown that those with larger and stronger calves have much less lower limb injury history including calf, achilles, shin pain and tibial stress fractures (Bennell et al. 1996). This is why the New Balance minimalist and low profile shoe range is highly recommended as a preventative for any runner.

‘For Runners who demand the latest trend in performance running, gradually shifting to Good Form Running products brings you closer to the ground, strengthens the body, improves efficiency and stability.’ – Jason Agosta, Leading sports podiatrist

Which shoe is for you? So, you’re keen to start running in lighter shoes? The truth is, safe transition to running in a minimalist shoe can take a bit of time. Just like starting a running program from scratch, switching shoes that will affect your running technique can cause foot and leg injury if undertaken too suddenly. The joints, tendons and muscles need sufficient time and training to make the necessary adaptations, so it is recommended that you start with a minimalist shoe with a reasonable amount of cushioning and slowly progress your way towards the super minimalist or ‘Minimus’ running shoe.

Kaila Mcknight

Ben St Lawrence

Selected in the women's 1500m for the London Olympics. She posted a 4:05.65 at the 1500 meters in Daegu, Korea on May 12 2011, which was inside the Olympic qualifying period.

Ben has been selected to race in the 10,000, at the London Olympics. Ben famously broke the Australian record in Palo Alto, USA on May 1, 2011. He clocked a 27:24.95 to take the record off the hands of training partner Collis Birmingham.

She has hardly raced at all so far in 2012 as she has been completing long training camps at Falls Creek. Her focus has been on training and preparing well for the Olympics. Getting that A qualifier last year was key for her as it has allowed her the fortunate benefit of putting training first this year, and not chasing times for the Olympics. Having said that, she still managed to win the Australian 1500m champs this year just outkicking her main rival Zoe Buckman. Kaila is still in Australia and has not made up her mind on when she will leave overseas to race prior to the Olympics.

Ben's Australian domestic season has been low-key to date. However, he did win the Australian 10,000m title at the Zatopek Classic in December, 2011. Ben to date has yet to have much success at major international championship competitions, and will be hoping to step up in London in order to make the Olympic 10,000m final. He will need to run the race of his life to do so. Ben is currently in America training and will then head to London, where he will base himself for three months leading into the Olympics. His preparation base of London will give him the opportunity to prepare without any distractions or unnecessary jet-setting.
