Dear Horizons at NCCS Family and Friends,
At our benefit in June, we talked about our secret sauce – that special collection of ingredients that make Horizons unique. A lot of things make Horizons special, but chief among them are the incredibly passionate, caring, and talented people who have shaped this organization and, more importantly, shaped the lives of our students in meaningful ways. They are the heart of Horizons.
We lost some important champions this year, including Lyn McNaught, Lavone Roberson, Jill Stevens, Stephanie Antoszweski, Jill Iscol, and Pat Stoddard, amongst them. What unites them all is their dedication to Horizons students over many decades. While we are heartbroken by their loss, they will long be remembered for their contributions and impact. We dedicate this annual report to these champions and hope you will take time to read the profiles of Lyn and Lavone, two remarkable women who exemplify the heart of Horizons and who will forever live on in the hearts of all of the students whose lives were changed because of their unwavering commitment to their success.
You are all an important part of our heart, as well, and we never forget that. Whether you support us as a donor, a volunteer, a community member, or a partner, it is your commitment and love for our students and families that make everything we do possible. Thanks to you, we are welcoming even more students into the Horizons family and offering them an expanded array of programs and services to support their success, all built on an important foundation of love, caring, and respect. Thank you for being an important part of the heart of Horizons!
Gratefully,
Nancy von Euler Executive DirectorA True Horizons Champion
It is hard to imagine where we would be without the incredible vision and leadership of Lyn McNaught. Lyn, who passed away in October at age 85, led Horizons at NCCS for 26 years as the first full-time Executive Director. During that time, Lyn elevated our fundraising, bolstered student recruitment, and strengthened all aspects of the program to support student success. Lyn saw the immeasurable value of learning how to swim and was the driving force behind the construction of Horizons’ first pool at NCCS, named in her honor. We are grateful that Lyn and her husband, Michael NcNaught, former Head of the Upper School and Assistant Head of School at NCCS, joined us in September 2021 for the dedication of a new, larger Horizons pool at NCCS—also named in her honor—so students can continue to take risks, master swimming skills, and build confidence for years to come. Lyn’s passion for providing educational opportunities did not end in Stamford and
Norwalk. She founded Horizons National with a goal of replicating the program across the country to benefit more children.
Lyn touched the lives of so many students, staff, and families within the Horizons community. Kevin Thompson, alumnus, former Horizons High School Academic Director, and current administrator at Greenwich Country Day School, said: “Lyn is synonymous with Horizons and the program would not be what it is (at Country School and nationally) without her. I often like to think that I was handpicked by her to attend Horizons because she saw something in me that not many teachers and adults saw, given my upbringing.”
We are immensely grateful for Lyn’s vision, spirit, and unwavering dedication to the mission of Horizons. We are grateful for the strong foundation she built and are honored to continue her legacy.
Michael and Lyn McNaught at the 2021 dedication of the new McNaught pool Lyn and former Horizons studentsA Life of Purpose and Impact
T he Horizons at NCCS family was heartbroken by the loss of our Academic Director, Lavone Roberson, on October 10, 2022, after a long battle with cancer. She was 41. Lavone started at Horizons at NCCS as a kindergartner, and she went through the program with her siblings, Jupiter and Jasmin. Horizons got in Lavone’s blood, and when she graduated, it wasn’t long before she returned as an academic coach in the high school program, and a teaching assistant and then lead teacher in the summer program. Lavone joined the Horizons at NCCS full-year leadership team in 2019 as Academic Director.
Prior to that, Lavone had an impressive 14-year career as a teacher and curriculum writer for Norwalk Public Schools. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hampton University, a Masters of Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport, and had completed the coursework for a doctorate degree in educational leadership. She was dedicated to creating opportunities for underserved students. Lavone was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 34, yet she continued to lead a life of purpose
and impact. In the seven years after her diagnosis, Lavone published four children’s books, founded the Now I Am Nia Foundation, and continued to inspire and support hundreds of Horizons students, staff, and family members.
The Roberson family exemplifies the heart and
soul of Horizons. Lavone’s mom, Jackie, has served as Senior Program Dean of Students and Culture, and as an academic coach in the high school program for more than 25 years. Her sister, Jasmin, is a beloved and admired teacher in our summer program. We grieve with the family and pledge to continue Lavone’s legacy of purpose and impact.
“I am who I am today because of Lavone. It truly takes a village, and Lavone was a special part of mine. The love and support she shared with me will stay with me forever.”
— ELOISA MELENDEZ, Horizons alumna and member of Horizons Board of Directors
Lavone gave her full heart and soul to her students
Lavone, Jackie, and Jasmin RobersonLeadership Celebration Recognizes Commitment & Years of Service
The George E. Stevens Visionary Award was presented at the Leadership Celebration on October 25, 2022, to the Cedar Hill Foundation, which has supported Horizons at NCCS for 20 years. This award honors a Horizons at NCCS supporter who helped realize the vision of Horizons at NCCS’ founder, George E. Stevens, through significant investment and unwavering commitment.
Cary Potter accepted the award on behalf of the Cedar Hill Foundation and said, “The Cedar Hill Foundation is incredibly honored to be associated with Horizons at NCCS. The measurable results that this organization and all those involved have achieved are extraordinary.”
The Leadership Celebration also recognized retiring lead swim teacher, Eric Fischman, for his 30 years of leadership in the Horizons program. Swimming has
always been a cornerstone of the Horizons summer program. Our younger students participate in daily instructional swim with a strong emphasis on water safety, including survival floating, resting strokes, and being prepared for rip currents. Eric earned a Horizons National Outstanding Teacher Award in 2012. Thanks to Eric’s calm presence and expertise, thousands of students have passed their deep-water swim test—and are more confident in and out of the pool. He’s also been a consistent volunteer instructor in our adult caregiver swim program.
As a tribute to him, Horizons will establish the Eric Fischman Swim Award, to be given to one student each summer for their courage and determination in working toward their personal swim goals. Congratulations to Eric for reaching this incredible 30-year milestone with Horizons.
The Joan and Lou Guzzetti Tutoring Fund Supports Student Success
Joan Guzzetti has always held a special place in her heart for Horizons at NCCS. Joan began her work with Horizons in 2001 as a tutor during the school year program and also worked for six years as a teacher in the summer program. Joan has continued her work as a tutor to this day and cherishes the relationships she has built with the students and families she has supported over the years. Joan is also known for being
our gifted photographer, capturing photos of the joyful moments of Horizons for more than 13 years. This past year, Joan and her husband, Lou, decided to take their commitment to Horizons even further and established The Joan and Lou Guzzetti Tutoring Fund, which will support one-toone tutoring of Horizons students during their academic year to help ensure their overall success.
”Lou and I have always been deeply dedicated to Horizons and its mission, and
— JOAN GUZZETTI SPOTLIGHT ON THE JOAN AND LOU GUZZETTI TUTORING FUND— ERIC FISCHMAN
“Horizons has always been like a family to me, and I plan on staying involved as an adult swim lesson volunteer.”
it gives us great pleasure to establish this fund, which will provide individualized academic support for Horizons students for many years to come.”

Inspiring Hearts And Minds
Horizons at New Canaan Country School is a year-round academic and enrichment program serving more than 400 under-resourced kindergarten through post-secondary students from Stamford and Norwalk each year. In addition to a six-week summer academic and enrichment program, we provide our students with year-round support, including tutoring and academic coaching, college advising, caregiver and family programming, and a Super Saturday program. All of our programs are tuition-free.
