DEAR HORIZONS AT NCCS FAMILY,
There is no doubt that the highlight of this past year was welcoming our students back to campus this summer after a year and a half of joining us virtually. The opportunity to learn and grow together again was not at all diminished by the need to wear masks and physically distance. We learned the art of the elbow bump and discovered that eyes smile as loudly as mouths; and we jumped back into the water, putting our beautiful new pool to use for the very first time. Being able to restore this cornerstone of our program in such a beautiful new facility was exciting and moving.
seen, known, and embraced; a community that is committed to their long-term success and thriving.
It was especially moving because we know that the past year and a half has taken a toll on our students and families. Our caregivers were stressed with unprecedented health, financial, childcare, parenting and educational concerns; and our students were affected by the stress in their households, the illness and/ or loss of loved ones, and from the isolation they experienced as they were forced to learn in hybrid or fully virtual formats for much of the school year. The challenges they experienced only serve to affirm how incredibly important it is that our students have Horizons – a place where they can feel truly
And, it can’t be said enough how much we appreciate all of you. Your support and encouragement have made it possible to face challenges and to continue to grow and improve. You helped build a new instructional pool, built a fund to help meet our families’ urgent financial needs, and provided the resources necessary to offer a safe and healthy summer under vastly more challenging circumstances. You continually step up to ensure that our students have the very best experience we can provide, and we thank you!
As I reflect on this past year, I want to express my appreciation and admiration for our adult caregivers. In listing the ingredients in our secret sauce, I don’t feel like we acknowledge the partnership and trust of our caregivers nearly enough. COVID-19 made us even more appreciative and humbled by that trust and partnership. We would have been nowhere without it.

ALLIES IN EDUCATION FAMILY SPOTLIGHT “Horizons is there for our family no matter what. I really do love the program as they have always had my back. All I had to do was call and ask for help and they would be there for us.” (Anonymous caregiver whose three children went through the Horizons program).
FAMILY SPOTLIGHT Marjorie was born and raised in Haiti and moved to Connecticut when she was 17 years old. She always believed that education would be the key to her children’s success. Her two children, Kaelyn and McKenley, are now Horizons students in 8th and 5th grade. In her words, “The year-round academic support and tutoring that Horizons provides is priceless. Lavone, the Academic Director, helped me better understand my children’s report cards and told me what support they needed to ensure they didn’t fall behind.” When asked if she was hesitant about sending her children to Horizons’ in-person summer program during an ongoing pandemic, she said, “I know you will do everything to keep the kids safe. It is a true testament to the staff on how they built this sense of community and inspired the students that health and safety guidelines were not just for their own good, but for the good of the community.”

Kaelyn, Marjorie, Kenny and McKenley
When it came time for this year’s Horizons Graduation and Alumni Induction Ceremony, her son, who had been struggling throughout his high school journey, did not have enough credits to graduate. Knowing what the Horizons community meant to him, Horizons invited him to be a part of the annual graduation ceremony. He attended and it was a turning point for him to be surrounded by his Horizons peers and hear their college plans. That very day he told his mom that he wanted to enroll in summer school. Our Academic Director helped him register in the summer credit recovery program and he was able to graduate by the end of June. He is now enrolled in community college and participating in our voluntary Horizons Transition to College program this fall.

• All grants were complemented by referrals to communitybased organizations for further assistance. • Horizons also provided $70,000 in grocery gift cards at our Holiday drive-through event to assist with food security.
Summer faculty members Sean Robb and Jasmin Roberson
“A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite imagination, and instill a love of learning.” – Brad Henry
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Sean Robb has found a home over the summer as a third-grade Lead Teacher and is known for his enthusiasm and motivational third grade cheer. Jasmin Roberson, an alumna of the Horizons at NCCS program, has shared her creativity and musical talents with our Junior Program students for many years as an Assistant Music Teacher. Last summer she embraced her curious side as a STEAM teacher, conducting experiments with our fourth and fifth grade students. Horizons is grateful to both for their many contributions and their dedication to our students and families over the last ten years.

At the fall Leadership Event and Pool Dedication Celebration, we honored two of our summer faculty members, Sean Robb and Jasmin Roberson, who both reached their 10-year anniversary with Horizons at New Canaan Country School.

NURTURING THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT
horizonskids.org
Juliette is currently a junior at Sacred Heart University with a major in political science and a minor in human rights and social justice. She was inspired by the curriculum in her Horizons eighth grade language arts class that included books focused on race, income, and social disparities. Her life’s passion and personal goal is to become an immigration or criminal justice lawyer. “I’m grateful to Horizons for bringing in successful alumni for Friday assemblies during the summer program who looked like me and inspired me [to believe] that I could do what they did if I built my confidence, my network and used the resources and opportunities I had because of Horizons.”
8
HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION 100% of Horizons at NCCS 12th grade students graduated from high school in June 2021
Nominated by Horizons, Juliette was selected to be part of a fellowship in Washington, D.C. where she worked on gun violence prevention.
Art Lead Teacher, Michelle Genuario (left) along with Dean of Students and Culture, Tanya Small (right) presented Juliette with the Leah Kimmet Teaching Assistant Award for her enthusiasm and motivation during the 2021 summer program.
COLLEGE ENROLLMENT 91% of Horizons at NCCS graduating seniors from the class of 2021 were enrolled in college in the fall
GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT “I don’t know where I would be in the college process without Horizons to guide me through it,” said Madelyn. Madelyn’s mom went to college, but her dad did not as he immigrated from Guatemala and started working right away. Both of her parents always pushed her to work hard in school so she would be successful. Her Horizons academic coach helped her navigate scholarship opportunities and virtual tours during the pandemic to find the school that was the best fit for her. Madelyn shared that “when I arrived on campus at the University of Massachusetts Boston in August, I felt like I was home. I’m majoring in business management, and I’m interested in a minor in finance as well. My dream is to run my own business someday.”
Madelyn’s mom, Karyn; Academic Director, Lavone Roberson; Madelyn and her younger brother, Nicholas at the Horizons High School Graduation and Alumni Induction Ceremony, June 2021.
Madelyn has worked with the swim team as a teaching assistant during the Horizons summer program for the last two years.
Together, we’re building a stronger future We are also beginning a process to refresh the strategic plan approved by the Board in March 2019, ensuring that we have the right strategic priorities and that we have a plan in place to meet the evolving needs of our students and families. We remain committed to partnering with community members, elected officials, municipal and community-based organizations and others who share our vision of a more just and equitable society. Good things take time. These efforts will yield results over years rather than semesters; but together we can build a stronger future.
horizonskids.org
As we evaluate how the pandemic has impacted student learning, Horizons is pivoting to serve more children earlier. Beginning with the 202021 admissions cycle, we began a phased shift of our entry grades, eliminating the sixth grade entry year and instead admitting 16 new fourth grade students. This year, we will double our kindergarten class. By starting more students earlier, we can better prepare our students to meet key academic milestones. This shift will also allow us to increase enrollment by 10% over five years.
