Celebrating Milestones

2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Horizons at New Canaan Country School Family, One of the great joys of being part of the Horizons at NCCS family is witnessing our students celebrate important life milestones. We are filled with such joy as we watch our fifth graders graduate from the Junior Program to the Senior Program, proudly donning the graduation caps they have crafted themselves. At every milestone, we feel a great sense of pride in what our students have accomplished, and an even greater sense of responsibility to remain beside them on the next leg of their journey, be it middle school, high school, college or career. That long-term commitment to our students is critical to the success of Horizons at NCCS, but is only possible because our visionary and faithful donors and supporters have been beside us through all of our milestones. I have thought about this a lot lately because we are embarking on the next chapter of our organizational journey with the adoption of our 2019-2022 Strategic Plan. We have embraced a new mission statement and our first-ever vision and values statements. This ambitious plan will ensure that we are prepared to keep up with the changing needs of our students and families. This will require a level of financial strength that allows us not just to sustain our programming, but also to deepen and fortify that work. It is because of what we have accomplished in our 55 years that we are at the point where we can think about making these expanded commitments. We have grown from a small summer program serving 20 students to a full-year program serving close to 400 students each year, with another 200 alumni in our burgeoning Alumni Association. The Horizons network of affiliates, modeled after Horizons at NCCS, is also multiplying rapidly, with more than 60 sites operating in 19 states and counting. It is exciting to appreciate how far we have come, and equally exciting to think about where we are headed. In this report, we are thrilled to celebrate the milestones of 21 summer teachers and staff who have dedicated themselves to serving our students for 10 or more years. We are also gratefully recognizing our committed donors who have faithfully accompanied Horizons at NCCS on our journey through many years of consecutive giving. Horizons is not about what we can accomplish in one summer or one school year. It is about what we can accomplish together, when we make good on our promise to be there for the long haul. With sincere gratitude,

NANCY VON EULER Executive Director

“ I look forward to my work at Horizons because it energizes me. Seeing students grow each year and, in many cases, come back and work in the program is a thrill. Many of the students have gone on to become teachers and bring a part of Horizons to their classrooms. This is the mark of a successful program. I am privileged to be a part of this amazing organization. What started as one little light in New Canaan is now a light that shines across the country.”

– CATHY MISHKIN, SUMMER FACULTY FOR 42 YEARS

INAUGURAL GEORGE E. STEVENS VISIONARY AWARD The newly established George E. Stevens Visionary Award honors a Horizons at NCCS supporter who has contributed to the realization of the vision of the founder of Horizons, George E. Stevens, through significant investment and an unparalleled commitment. We were thrilled to present the award on October 29 to the Lone Pine Foundation and the Serenbetz Family Foundation, honoring their dedication to improving the lives of the students and families we serve.

“The Serenbetz Family Foundation is proud to support Horizons at NCCS. The program aligns with our core belief that the strength of our society depends on the resourcefulness and emotional health of its young people. We believe the Horizons program fosters creativity, resiliency, and most importantly, education for children regardless of circumstance, enabling them to reach their full potential.” – CINDI SERENBETZ, SERENBETZ FAMILY FOUNDATION, RECIPIENT OF THE GEORGE E. STEVENS VISIONARY AWARD

Ensuring a Promising Future WE WILL FOCUS ON FOUR KEY GOALS OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS

PROGRAMMING Strengthen K-12 programming to ensure that each student graduates from high school and is college-eligible.

PARTNERSHIPS

Expand and cultivate partnerships and collaborations.

DATA

Create a set of data to help track clear and measurable outcomes.

FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY Increase giving target by 5% annually.

“ As a member of the board and as a parent of a fifth-grade student, it was a pleasure to assist with developing a plan that would strengthen the K-12 program, expand partnerships outside of our community, and look into ways to assist high school graduates transition into the next chapter of their lives.”

– NYIESHA ARNOLD, PAST BOARD MEMBER, STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE MEMBER, HORIZONS AT NCCS PARENT

PROMISE SOCIETY

Legacy giving society fulfills our promise for future generations In October 2019 Horizons at NCCS officially launched a planned giving society – the Promise Society.
