STRENGTHENING THE FOUNDATIONS OF COMMUNITY

T

he New Canaan YMCA is committed to strengthening our community. The Y is a diverse organization of men, women, and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living, and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We remain committed to promoting youth development and the 40 Developmental Assets through active collaborations with the Town of New Canaan, New Canaan Public Schools, and the Outback Teen Center. This past year, high school attendance at the Outback’s dances has grown to an average of 200 kids! The Y’s Special Needs Initiative—launched in 2009—continues to flourish and now serves nearly 200 kids, teens, and adults through specialized and mainstream recreational and social programming. The New Canaan YMCA is one of just a handful of Ys in the country to have a fulltime, dedicated Director of Special Needs Programming.

To help our members and the community meet their goals for healthy living, we continue to improve our facilities. In addition to the Y’s new Mind-Body Center, we made exciting equipment and facility updates to our Wellness Center this past year. Philanthropic support of the Y remains strong. The Y’s 13th annual golf outing at the Country Club of Fairfield, chaired by Chris Pohle and Rick Selvala, raised more than $65,000 to support the Y’s Special Needs Initiative. The 2009 All Kids Are Our Kids campaign, under the leadership of Susan Lovejoy and Paula Bruno, was very successful despite a difficult economic climate. And, through a wonderful new collaboration with the Kiwanis Club, the Y introduced Circus Vidbel, a new family fundraiser to support teen programs. We look forward to it becoming a tradition! We are entering our fourth year of partnering with Facing the Future, a nonprofit child development center serving the Kenyan Slum of Kibera.

SUPPORTING YOUTH: THE ALL KIDS ARE OUR KIDS COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

N In spite of economic uncertainty, the Y continues to maintain a steady fiscal position. In 2009, we awarded more than $270,000 in financial assistance for memberships and programs, up 13% from 2008. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health, and our neighbors. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our primary goal. And it is one our Board and Staff are proud to work toward achieving. Yours in service,

ew Canaan resident Amy Farina was the 2009 recipient of the All Kids Are Our Kids College Scholarship. Supported by the Y’s annual campaign, the scholarship was established in 2007, and a one-time award of $5,000 is granted based on academic potential, as well as volunteer and work experience. Amy has been involved with the Y since moving to town in third grade and has been a program participant, volunteer, and staff member. She worked as a camp counselor at the Y’s Sports Camp, and taught Bouncing Bears and Gymnastics. “The YMCA has been like a second home for me,” says Amy. “Everyone knows me by name, and there is a real sense of community. The Y also provided me with my first job, teaching gymnastics. The Y has made such a huge impact on my life, and now it’s my job to make an impact on the kids who come to the Y.” Amy recently completed her freshman year at American University, where she is majoring in political science. With a strong interest in politics, Amy aspires to elected office. “I’d like to be a senator,” says Amy, “But my real ambition is to be president!”

DID YOU KNOW? We made it possible for 74 kids to have fun at summer camp who may not have had the chance to do, granting $70,200 in financial assistance.

FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

The Y empowers our youth by helping develop leadership qualities, selfesteem, and confidence, and I can attest to this, as I see my children thriving in the Y’s programs.

Nurturing the potential of every child and teen. We believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, and that the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for the quality of life. At the Y, kids learn their ABC’s, learn to share, learn about sportsmanship, and, most importantly, learn how to be themselves. And that makes for confident kids today and contributing, engaged adults tomorrow. Whether it is through childcare, swim lessons, summer camp, sports, or recreational programs for the entire family, the Y’s unique approach is to emphasize character development and incorporate it into the skilllearning process.

-Peg Davidson, Annual Campaign

Rainbow Station has been a wonderful journey for our children and family as a whole. Never could we have asked for a more exceptional place for our children. My daughter’s confidence has grown, and she is so proud of her accomplishments. She has made some very special friends and is creating her own identity. -Nancy Capelle, Childcare parent

SUMMERS TO REMEMBER: 345 kids, on average, attended each session of Y summer camp. The Y offers camp programs for kids ages 3-13, and helps foster leadership skills through its Leader in Training and Counselor in Training programs for kids aged 12-15.

DID YOU KNOW? 62 kids learned their ABC’s, made friends, and built a foundation for healthy habits at the Y’s Nursery School.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MADNESS: Open to all in the community, regardless of membership status, our Middle School Madness program offers safe, supervised fun and special events to more than 100 5th-8th graders one Saturday night a month during the school year.

FAMILY, THE FOUNDATION OF COMMUNITY: The Y helps strengthen family relationships through its Y-Guide and Princess program, a father/ child program for kids in kindergarten through third grade and their fathers. We have one of the most vibrant programs in the region, with more than 500 participants.

Thank you so very much for the wonderful work you have been doing for children with special needs in our community. You have made an incredible difference for our kids!

DID YOU KNOW? 110 kids have moms and dads who can go to work knowing their children are safe, engaged, having fun, and learning new things every day in the Y’s full-day and after-school childcare programs.

FOR HEALTHY LIVING Improving our community’s health and well-being. The Y is a leading voice in our community on health and well-being. With a mission focused on balance, the Y brings families closer together, encourages good health, and fosters connections through fitness, sports, and shared interests. As a result, 6,100 adults and 4,800 children each year are receiving the support, guidance, and resources they need to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind, and body. In addition to our state-of-the-art wellness facilities, our members enjoy the camaraderie of classes in the pools, Group Exercise and Spinning centers, and our new MindBody Center. Nearly 1,800 teens enjoy safe, healthy after-

school recreation, and 2,100 families come together through our programs, facilities, and special events. No other organization serves such a broad cross-section of people of all ages, faiths, and abilities. The Y strengthens our community because we are the community.

The New Canaan Y is a great place to connect with friends and become part of the community—plus the trainers are always available to offer great tips (which I need)! My whole family enjoys the benefits of the Y, and we feel very fortunate to have such a great place here in town. -Kevin Cowser, New Canaan Ambulance

Corps Captain and YMCA Board Member

MY TIME: At the Y, people of all ages and abilities find the resources they need for a healthy lifestyle in a caring, affirming atmosphere.

FAMILY TIME: The Y brings families together to grow and have fun together. Family camp nights, our annual Halloween Party, and the International Festival are among the special events the we host each year.

BUILDING HEALTHY HABITS: Nearly 300 middle school students presently hold Y Fit Passes. These 1214 year olds have completed a 10-week training program, as well as practical and written tests. They can use the Y’s Wellness Center during special after-school student hours, or any time with their parents. Since its introduction several years ago, 500 teens have completed the program.

DID YOU KNOW? The Y offers rehabilitative programs for those living with such conditions as Arthritis, Parkinson’s Disease, and other movement challenges. We’ve also entered into a collaborative partnership with Stamford Hospital to offer Phase IV cardiac rehab right here at the Y.

PRIME TIME: Adults over 50 are our fastest-growing membership segment. The Y helped 2,600 people in this age group stay well and make connections this past year. We’re also proud to host our annual Senior Health and Fitness Fair, stroke and blood pressure screenings, as well as hospitalsponsored lectures and workshops.

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and providing support to our neighbors. The Y makes strengthening our community our cause. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY A WORLD AWAY: THE KIBERA PROJECT

T

he New Canaan YMCA’s commitment to social responsibility extends far beyond the borders of our immediate community. In 2007, we entered into a partnership with Facing the Future, a child development center serving 100 young children in the Kenyan slum of Kibera. In Kibera, nearly one million people live in an area the size of Central Park without clean water, electricity, sanitation, adequate food, or medical facilities. 70% of the population is under the age of 14, and many children are orphaned or live in single-parent households due to the AIDS/HIV epidemic. We are proud to sponsor Facing the Future’s feeding program, where $200 can feed a child for an entire year. Many of these kids receive their only daily meal while in the Center’s care. Says Simeon Ajigo, Facing the Future’s Executive Director, “Slum kids in Kibera stare at the face of hunger and despair as the country’s ability to feed the population grows hopelessly low. Our children depend entirely upon us to see another day, and our feeding intervention now turns out to be a life-saving measure. Anyone from the New Canaan Y who has ever contributed toward the support of these kids should be encouraged that their efforts have saved a precious life.”
