KIBERA

Partnership

In 2007, the New Canaan YMCA embarked on an exciting partnership with Facing the Future and the YMCA in Kibera. Kibera is one of Africa’s largest slums and is located in Kenya. There, nearly one million people are living in an area the size of Central Park. The people of Kibera have none of the things that we take for granted on a daily basis—water, electricity, plumbing, trash removal, medical facilities, adequate food, etc. There are not enough schools, childcare, and early childhood education programs available to meet the needs of all of the children in Kibera, where 70% of the population is under the age of 14. The New Canaan YMCA is proud to be sponsoring the feeding program at Facing the Future. Founded by Simeon Ajigo, former head of the Kibera YMCA. Facing the Future provides early childhood education, childcare, primary education, a youth leadership program, and feeding to over 100 participants. Children who are in programs often receive their only daily meal while there. Here are a few of the “Faces of Kibera”:

Please help by sponsoring a child today. Just $200 can feed one child in Kibera for a year. Yes, I am interested in sponsoring a child in Kibera Payment is enclosed: Check Credit Card MC / V # Exp. You will receive a letter for tax purposes and a photo of the child from Kibera you are sponsoring (please see Carol Antrum if you would like to pick the child you would like to sponsor). I am unable to sponsor a child at this time but would like to be added to your mailing list to receive updates on the New Canaan YMCA’s partnership with Kibera Name: Address: Phone:

Adventure

Top 5 reasons to choose the New Canaan YMCA’s Project Adventure:

5 A day (or more) of fun for all involved. Adventure promotes and develops 4 Project team-building, leadership, and confidence. 3 Each program is custom-designed with your input. learning and skills transfer directly to 2 Participants’ life experiences. with a wide variety of learning styles 1 Participants benefit from our activities. We work with school groups, alternative classrooms, out-of-school programs, religious youth groups, sports teams, camps, and clubs throughout the year.

Bring your group or team to Project Adventure at the YMCA: Groups who take part in Project Adventure will be required to figure out problems, overcome obstacles, and work as a team to complete a task within certain boundaries and sometimes within a time limit, much like “real life.” What your group will get out of it is a boosted morale toward stressful situations and seemingly impossible odds. Once they know they can overcome an obstacle such as “Wild Woosey” or encourage their fellow group members to experience the “flying squirrel,” they know they can overcome tasks at work, in school, or life. Are you flexible with scheduling? How about weekends? We are as flexible as our schedules allow us, depending on the staff at hand for your desired time. Please contact us about availability. We will use shaker instruments, woods, drums, bells and more, as well as props like scarves, balls and soft toys to allow children to explore with verbal direction, music, and lots of singing! Wednesday: 9:30 - 10:15 am Music for 2’s and 3’s – Ages 24 – 35 months: Featuring more independent activities, kids have a choice of being with their grown-up or sitting in a group with the teacher. Class includes group instrument play on various instruments. Wednesday: 10:30 - 11:15 am Music for 3’s and 4’s – Ages 36 months and up: Child-only class, with a gentle approach to separation. In this class, we get more into musical notation and delve into the use of musical notes and vocabulary. Imaginary music play is one of our favorite ways of broadening musical horizons at this age. Wednesday: 2:15 - 3:00 pm

Y-SWIM EVALUATIONS FOR FALL 2009 SESSION We will be holding evaluation days for children returning to swim lessons this Fall in July & August. Children who have attended summer swim lessons do not need to attend.

Evaluations will take 5-10 minutes in the Recreational Pool on the following days only: •

Monday Tuesday Thursday Saturday Monday Tuesday Thursday Saturday

July 27, 3:30-4:30 PM July 28, 5-6 PM July 30, 5-6 PM August 1, 9-10 AM August 3, 3:30-4:30 PM August 4, 5-6 PM August 6, 5-6 PM August 8, 9-10 AM

• •

Due to the overwhelming number of members attending weekend Family Swim, our concerns for safety, and the legal capacity of the pool, we have a special procedure for Family Swims on Saturdays and Sundays: Only 60 people will be allowed in the Recreational Pool are at one time. Fish passes will be available at the Membership check-in Desk. When swiping your membership card, please pick up your fish pass. Each fish pass entitles the holder to enter the Recreational Pool for a 45-minute swim. Passes are to be handed to the lifeguard and your last name given. If at the end of your 45-minute swim, there is no one waiting and passes are available, you can renew for another 45 minutes. Once all 60 passes have been given out, members will have to wait outside of the pool area until the next passes become available.

New Canaan YMCA Aquatics

“NO SECOND CHANCE” SAFETY FOR ALL • Three children die each day from drowning. • For every child that drowns, another 4 receive emergency care for non-fatal injuries. • Non-fatal drowning can cause brain damage that results in long-term disabilities. • 1 in 4 drownings occur among children 14 years old and younger. The New Canaan YMCA Aquatic Department implemented a campaign called “NO SECOND CHANCE” with their Camp Waterfronts two summers ago to address the need of educating staff on drowning situations that occur in the summer months. Last year, we implemented it with our year-round staff to focus on safety for all who use our pools. This Fall, we will be doing mandatory swim testing on all members who use our pool during Family Swim times. Information on procedures for this swim testing will be available on our website and posted around our facility. Once swim testing starts, all attending Family Swim will need to be tested before participating in Family Swim. Aquatic staff will be available to test members 15 years and younger during all Family Swim times.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Programming We strive to serve all members of our community, and individuals with special needs are encouraged to participate in any of the program offerings throughout our brochure – with the assistance of a YMCA aide if needed. In addition, the Y has a variety of specific special needs programs if that is better suited to a participant’s needs.

MORE THAN JUST MUSIC Music can provide all children, special needs or typical, a safe environment to learn, express, create, and explore, all while developing positive social, cognitive, fine/gross motor, and social-emotional skills. Music therapist Judy Engel incorporates developmental skills into this music program. For example: Songs traditionally seen as a movement song require the child to visually process information from peer to adult, auditory input from the music source and directional information, receptive language to decode the directions, cognitive ability to enable decision making, expressive language to communicate within the activity, and the kinesthetic ability to perform the motor skills required. Participants will have fun with music while learning and practicing important skill development. HIGH SCHOOL & COLLEGE S T U D E N T S ( A D U LT S T O O ).. We are looking for volunteers to help out in the programs listed on this page. If you enjoy being with others and are caring, patient, and enthusiastic, please contact Carol Antrum at 966-4528, ext. 140. It will be a fun, rewarding experience and also looks great on resumes while providing valuable, hands–on experience for those going into the field of education, recreation, or therapy. OUTBACK AFTERNOONS Middle school and high school youth. Looking for something to do with others during the week afterschool? How about an afternoon of fun at the Outback? Food, music, ping pong, foosball, Wii games, pool, and more. The Outback provides a fun environment where participants can enjoy a variety of loosely structured activities. Special events will also be planned. Participants should come with a buddy (the YMCA/Outback can help with this too) and be ready to have some fun!

E X P L O R E R B E A R S (similar to Y Bouncing Bears) This exploratory gymnastics class, designed for children with special needs, offers a semi-structured format of instruction, allowing your child the freedom to move freely along with you from station to station and explore a variety of gymnastics skills at his/her own pace. Instructors will assist you and your child at each station and nurture interest, motivate to try new things, set goals, and encourage a love of gymnastics. As participants climb the mountain, bounce on the trampoline, walk across obstacles, roll over the bars, and swing on the rings, their spatial awareness, self-confidence, and love of physical activities will be increasing every moment. A J O U R N E Y T H RO U G H A RT This is an art-centered activity group for children with a variety of special needs and developmental delays. The goal of this group is to use art therapy materials and techniques in a therapeutic way to enhance and practice communication skills. Art can stimulate imagination and becomes the bridge for self expression. We will use a variety of art materials to assist in the development of foundation skills, art activities, and socialization. The instructor, Sara O’Connor has her M.A. in Art Therapy. T H E AT R E W O R K S Offered in partnership with Arts for Healing at the YMCA facility, this program consists of weekly workshops in small group settings to foster socialization and self-expression through interactive musical and dramatic play experiences. Participants play instruments, sing, act, choreograph movement, develop the plot and scripts for performances, as well as design and construct scenery. The program offers socialization within the context of improvisational musical and dramatic play for ages 6-14. Led by Arts for Healing Theatre Director, Billy Ayres. MEMBER LIMIT FEE

T H E P R E S C H O O L 3 (Ages 4-5) The Preschool 3 is a fun class that covers three sports: Basketball, Tee-ball, and Soccer. The class runs for 12 weeks, and dedicates 4 weeks to teaching the fundamentals of each sport. Participants should bring their own glove for tee-ball. P R E S C H O O L S O C C E R (Ages 3-5) Participants will learn the fundamentals and basics of soccer. Players will also learn teamwork and sportsmanship while having a great time!

T H E L I T T L E S T I X T M (Ages 3-5) The LITTLE STIXTM lacrosse class will be offered at the New Canaan YMCA for boys and girls ages 3-5 this fall. Children will gain confidence and have fun learning lacrosse skills. Cradling, shooting, throwing, catching, and game play are all part of the 45-minute program. S N A G ® G O L F (Ages 4-5) It has been said that the game of golf is a microcosm of life itself. The sport, more than any other, truly reflects the well- known adage, “It’s not whether you win or lose; it’s how you play the game.” Developed by former PGA Tour players Terry Anton and Wally Armstrong, SNAG® provides an excellent entree for kids into the game of golf. SNAG® contains all the basic elements of golf, but in a modified form. Falling somewhere between miniature golf and regulation golf, SNAG® allows for full shots, pitching, chipping, and putting. Perhaps the greatest feature of SNAG® is that it makes learning as much fun as playing!

This program is a great introduction to an Olympic sport that has been around for centuries. Participants will learn the basic footwork, hand positioning, and much more. Note: Fencing is a beginning-level class. Participants signing up for Advanced Fencing must have completed Fencing and have instructor approval. All first-time participants must purchase the basic 5-piece beginner foil set BFS5 at www.blue-gauntlet.com or by calling 201-797-3332. T H E S C H O O L A G E 3 (Grades 3-5) Enjoy 3 sports—basketball, flag football, and soccer—in this class, which runs for 12 weeks and dedicates 4 weeks to each sport.

J U N I O R T E N N I S (Ages 6-10 and 11-15) Presented by Slammer Tennis World! Kids will learn the basics of tennis in a fun-filled atmosphere. Strokes covered include ground strokes and volleys, the overhead, and the serve. The class will also incorporate some light exercises and footwork drills to build stamina. Lessons taught by a certified tennis teaching professional. Note: All students must bring their own tennis racquet to class, and there will be no make-ups except for inclement weather. S P O RT S O F A L L S O RT S (Grades K-3) For boys and girls in Kindergarten through third grade, this program develops skills in different sports areas in a fun environment. Some of the activities will be soccer, football, gymnastics, basketball, kickball, baseball, and other ball games.

S N A G ® G O L F (Ages 5-11) Developed by former PGA Tour players Terry Anton and Wally Armstrong, SNAG® provides an excellent entre for kids into the game of golf.
