Registration Information

Begins Monday, February 22, 2010, at 9:00 a.m. See page 13 for information. All campers must be New Canaan YMCA members in order to participate in camp. This is an annual membership and also entitles participants to sign up for classes and enjoy the YMCA year ‘round. See a YMCA staff member for a tour of our facility or for more information. Before starting camp, all campers must have completed camp paperwork and returned forms to the YMCA. Forms may be downloaded from the Y website (www.newcanaanymca.org) or our online portal, and are available at the Front Desk.

Survey Says… In 2009, the New Canaan conducted in-depth surveys among the parents of our summer campers. The research was conducted by Triangle2 Partners, and the New Canaan YMCA scored highest in the nation among all the YMCAs with which Triangle2 worked last year in the quality of its summer camp programs! Throughout this brochure, you’ll see what parents are saying about our camps.

Welcome to the

New Canaan YMCA Summer Camps! There’s something for everyone at the New Canaan YMCA’s Summer Camps…

Celebrating 50 years of summers to remember! The YMCA Summer Camps offer safe, supervised fun; caring, responsible staff; and a variety of experiences for children of all ages and abilities. And no one knows more about summer camp fun than the YMCA! In fact, YMCAs invented recreational camping, and the oldest camp in America is a Y camp. YMCAs across the country have been giving kids the time of their lives for 120 years, and the New Canaan YMCA is proud to continue this tradition as we enter our 50th Summer Camp season. We work to make every child’s summer safe, enjoyable, and one he or she will remember for a lifetime. Campers learn consideration for others, how to play fairly, cooperation with others, and then take these skills with them beyond camp. Each child gains something: making new friends, learning how to swim, independence, and leadership. And as a result, summer camp helps to build self-confidence, self-esteem, and a healthy attitude, skills that last long after the summer’s end.

The YMCA’s goal is to help each child become a more responsible citizen and to put into practice the values we emphasize through all our programs: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

LEADER-IN-TRAINING

( A G E S 12-13 ) Offered at Camp Y-Ki and Super Sports Camp, the LIT program has been designed as a bridge between being a camper and being a CIT. This program is an opportunity for enthusiastic teens who may still be “campers at heart” but are ready to lead by example and be positive role models to younger campers. These young teens will have an opportunity to enjoy age-appropriate and challenging group activities within our traditional day camps. In addition to having fun, they will have lots of opportunities for team-building, leadership development, problem-solving, and developing skills for working with children of a variety of different ages. By the end of the summer, each young teen will gain personal growth, self-confidence, and self-motivation.

– COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING 14-15)

Do you remember your favorite camp counselor? Here is your chance to learn all you need to know to be just as fantastic! The eight-week Counselor-In-Training (CIT) program will teach you the necessary skills to be a great camp counselor. Participants will have the opportunity to experience and explore each individual Y camp offered during the summer. The YMCA CIT program offers teenagers aged 14-15 the unique opportunity to make a difference in their community, while creating peer relationships, developing leadership skills, learning more about the needs of their community. While it’s about learning, it’s also about fun. YMCA Counselors in Training will enjoy cool events such as off-site trips; guest speakers; special events; an overnight trip to Club Getaway in Kent, CT; and a lot more! All interested youth must be 14 before the start of the program. This is designed as an eight-week program. CIT candidates will need to commit to and complete at least six weeks in order to be eligible for a stipend at the end of the program. H OW T O A P P LY

To be considered for this program, complete the necessary application (available online or at the YMCA) and return by March 31. Applicants will be notified by April 15 with regard to an interview.
