PEE WEE TENNIS (Ages 4-5)

THE LITTLE STIXTM (Ages 3-5)

BASKETBALL CLINICS

SOCCER (Grades K-2)

Presented by Slammer Tennis World! Kids will learn the basics of tennis in a fun-filled atmosphere. Strokes covered include ground strokes and volleys, the overhead, and the serve. The class will also incorporate some light exercises and footwork drills to build stamina. Lessons taught by certified tennis teaching professional. Note: All students must bring their own tennis racquet to class.

The LITTLE STIXTM lacrosse class will be offered at the New Canaan YMCA for boys and girls ages 3-5. Children will gain confidence and have fun learning lacrosse skills. Cradling, shooting, throwing, catching, and game play are all part of the 45-minute program.

Former U-Conn Starter Craig Austrie will be running a winter clinic on Sundays at the YMCA. At this clinic, your child will get the opportunity to play games, develop their basketball skills, as well as become a disciplined basketball player. Craig knows what it takes to take your child to their highest possible level. When games are played, Craig and his staff will evaluate players, strengthening their strengths and addressing their weaknessess.

Presented by Blue Wave Kickers (BWK). Fun is the single most important thing Blue Wave Kickers teaches. If kids are not having fun while playing soccer, then nothing else matters, because they will find something else to do instead. BWK instructors’ enthusiasm spreads like wildfire, and the kids love the game. This class engages children in physical activity while developing their motor skills and basic soccer skills. Fun and imaginative games also help build self-confidence and self esteem.

THE PRESCHOOL 3 (Ages 4-5) The Preschool 3 is a fun class that covers three sports: Basketball, Tee-ball, and Floor Hockey. The class runs for 12 weeks, and dedicates 4 weeks to teaching the fundamentals of each sport. Participants should bring their own glove for tee-ball. PRESCHOOL SOCCER (Ages 3-5) Presented by Blue Wave Kickers (BWK).

TGA GOLF (Ages 4-5) Learn how to play golf in a safe and fun environment with our TGA-certified instructors. Learn swing fundamentals, along with basic rules and etiquette of the game. This golf enrichment program is designed to develop each child’s passion for golf while developing and improving motor skills and coordination, helping with focus and concentration, and boosting self-confidence. All golf equipment is provided, including softer practice balls. Our 5level-program will advance children through all aspects of the game and will prepare them to go out and play on the golf course. Our instructors create the right balance between fun and fundamentals. Note: 6-week course. YOUNG ATHLETES (YSN) Unified sports program for preschoolers and Kindergarteners. See page 16.

All participants get a chance to learn from someone who has played at the highest level in Division 1. The lessons are focused, fun, and challenging. The instruction is all positive. The instruction is tailored to age and skill level. This is about making each kid feel great about what they can do as individuals, not comparing each to the next. If your kids like basketball, this will make them love it. If they love basketball already this is a great opportunity to realize their full potential!

The Y is proud to host our Unified Sports program! For more info see page 16.

TGA GOLF (Ages 6-11) 6-week course. Learn golf in a safe, fun environment with our TGA-certified instructors. Swing fundamentals, along with basic rules and etiquette. nurturing the potential of every child and teen

SANDLOT SPORTS (Grades 5-6) New at the Y, Sandlot Sports is our answer to today’s overstructured and over-scheduled athlete. Kids enjoy the camaraderie of their peers on the ball fields and in the gym, where they are able to set the rules for the game and resolve conflicts that arise during games with limited assistance from the staff. Kids gain the opportunity to learn problem-solving skills and the nuances of the sports played while developing an appreciation for recreational sports. Our goal is to bring back the “old-school” spirit of playing sports, reminiscent of the days of yesteryear where kids played sports in their local neighborhoods and sandlots just for the sake of competing and having fun with their friends. Sign up and enjoy the true meaning of sports!

JUNIOR TENNIS (Ages 6-10 and 11-15) Presented by Slammer Tennis World! Kids will learn the basics of tennis in a fun-filled atmosphere. Strokes covered include ground strokes and volleys, the overhead, and the serve. The class will also incorporate some light exercises and footwork drills to build stamina. Lessons taught by a certified tennis teaching professional. Note: All students must bring their own tennis racquet to class.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL (Grades 7-8) This class for middle school girls is an introduction to the fundamentals of volleyball. The program is recommended for all those who have an interest in playing volleyball at the high-school level.

RED CROSS BABYSITTING CERTIFICATION

Join us for 8 weeks of adventure and fun! The first four weeks you will challenge yourselves on the bouldering walls, find different ways to get to the top of the free-standing climbing tower, or practice your speed getting to the top of the wall at Carabiners indoor climbing gym in Fairfield. The last four weeks you will learn about orienteering while navigating your way out of a trail, find hidden objects while using a compass, and learn some winter outdoor survival skills. Note: First class on 1/5 will only meet from 3:30 to 5:30pm.

(Ages 11-15) Enjoy being with kids? Looking to earn extra cash? Take the Red Cross Babysitting Certification course at the YMCA and be the “best of the best.” You’ll learn specific techniques and skills to become certified in First Aid. Parents will feel reassured when they hear that you have earned this certification. If you want to be a confident, fun, and creative babysitter, sign up now! This is an 8 week course course.

This high-energy sport utilizes both speed and agility. This is an activity that is great for those trying to develop or improve hand-eye coordination.

YOUTH SQUASH (Ages 8-11) Squash is a sport that has a long tradition at the YMCA, and instruction is now available in this fast-paced sport. Participants are guaranteed plenty of conditioning along with instruction in racquet handling, skill development, and more. FENCING (Beginners & Advanced; ages 7-15) Looking for something new for your child to try? This program is a great introduction to an Olympic sport that has been around for centuries. Participants will learn the basic footwork, hand positioning, and much more. Note: Fencing is a beginning-level class. Participants signing up for Advanced Fencing must have completed Fencing and have instructor approval. All first-time participants must purchase the basic 5-piece beginner foil set BFS5 at www.blue-gauntlet.com or by calling (201) 797-3332.

Canaan Parks and Recreation, and The New Canaan Police have joined forces to create a variety of outlets for young people, with the goal of giving middle school students fun and safe “choices.” Look for the Saxe Middle School “Choices Catalog,” which includes a full list of all the activities, along with dates and times for programs and other choices.

TEEN SCENE (YSN: Grades 6-12) This 8-week program will meet on Wednesdays from 3:15-6:30 pm. Dattco Bus will pick us up at the New Canaan YMCA promptly by 3:15, and we will return to the YMCA by 6:30 pm. Y-HIGH LEADERS We are looking for youth ages 14-17 who are interested in working as volunteers with a group of their peers to organize club events, trips, and community service projects. This is your chance to showcase your leadership skills and talents within your community and meet new friends! The YMCA is inviting you to be a part of this dynamic group. Group will meet two times per month during the school year. Please contact Davie Cedela for more details at 966-4528, ext. 141.

Middle school and high school youth: Looking for something fun to do with others during the week? How about evenings at the Outback Teen Cener, dinners in town, and special events at the YMCA? Teen Scene is an ideal opportunity for teenagers with special needs to partake in social outings with other teenagers and peers.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MADNESS (Grades 5-8) Teens, come take over the YMCA! Middle School Madness is offered one Saturday a month (except in December) during the school year. Under the leadership of the Y staff and volunteers, Middle School Madness offers fun, recreation, and great special events for our community’s youth. Activities include special theme nights, D.J. dance parties, 3-D movies, live entertainment, swimming, working out in the Wellness Center, game room, and much more! Check out the Wii room, a space designed exclusively for Wii games! ANGEL FISH (YSN) 11-WEEK SESSION

RED CROSS LIFEGUARD COURSE

A small group class for children with special needs and his or her parent. This class will use therapeutic techniques to strengthen muscles, normalize muscle tone, and modulate the sensory system. Using the water’s properties of buoyancy, resistance and hydrostatic pressure, we will meet each child’s individual needs. This class is run by Ailene Tisser-Physical Therapist, along with other therapists and a YMCA instructor. The focus will be on parent education regarding therapeutic activities, basic swim skills, peer interaction, motor planning, and mostly FUN! Siblings cannot swim at this time. Siblings will be invited to swim on the last class at the instructor’s discretion.

Weekend courses are held on Saturdays from 3:30-6:30 PM and on Sundays from 12-5 PM. Lifeguarding courses will be offered during the Winter Session. Detailed information will be available at the YMCA and on our website starting in December. Fee: $350

To pick up your Fish Pass at the Member Check-In Desk when swiping your membership card. Family swims are intended for those with Family memberships. If you’re a non-member, you may participate in our family swims based on the following fees:

TEEN GYM AND SWIM (YSN) A combination gymnastics and swim program for teenagers with

0-14 years - $5.00; 15-21 years - $15.00; Adult $30.00; Adult M/C or W/C - $50.00

special needs! Teens must be able to swim independently.

TLC SALAMANDER (YSN) This is a “bridging” class especially for children with special needs who are ready to be introduced to a regular swim lesson format. All children must be evaluated by the Aquatics Department prior to registering to determine if this is the appropriate class for them. The class ratio will be 1 instructor to 3 children. Registration will not be accepted without Director’s approval.

FISH PASS PROCEDURE

PARENTS

IN EFFECT DURING ALL FAMILY SWIMS; WEEKDAY MAXIMUM NUMBER OF SWIMMERS IS 25. (Weekend Family Swims times: Max. is 50 if 2 guards are on duty.)

Please remember to check the recreational swim program board located in the front hallway next to the door to the Rec. Pool.

Children 10 years & younger and non-swimmers of any age MUST have an adult (18 years or older) in a bathing suit in the pool area at all times in order to participate in Family Swim.

Keep yourself informed, and pick up your copy of the parent handbook and Winter session guide.

Y-SWIM MAKEUP CLASS POLICY

BUDDY SWIM (YSN) The New Canaan YMCA is proud to offer a class for children with special needs aged 7-12 years old led by an instructor. Children are grouped with 1-2 high school volunteers who will work on their skills under the direction of the swim instructor.

FAMILY SWIM INFO:

DON’T FORGET

NON -SWIMMERS OF ANY AGE AND CHILDREN USING A SWIM AID MUST HAVE A PARENT IN THE POOL NO MORE THAN AN ARM’S LENGTH AWAY FROM CHILD AT ALL TIMES. LIFEGUARDS WILL ENFORCE ALL POOL RULES AND GUIDELINES.

It is our desire that each student attend all classes within a session. This will provide the maximum benefit to the development of a child. Therefore, a makeup class can only be allowed for a student who has been sick the day of their class, and with a doctor’s note. All make-ups MUST be approved AND scheduled by Kim Rojas, Assistant Aquatics Director, by calling 966-4528, ext. 143.

Fish Pass is in effect! Due to the overwhelming number of members attending weekend Family Swim, our concerns for safety, and the legal capacity of the pool, we have a special procedure for Family Swims on Saturdays and Sundays: • Only 50 people are permitted in the Recreational Pool at one time. • Fish passes will be available at the Membership Check-In Desk. When swiping your membership card, please pick up your Fish Pass. • Each Fish Pass entitles the holder to enter the Recreational Pool for a 45-minute swim. • Passes are to be handed to the lifeguard and your last name given. • If at the end of your 45-minute swim, there is no one waiting and passes are available, you can renew for another 45 minutes. • Once all 50 passes have been given out, members will have to wait outside of the pool area until the next passes become available.

The New Canaan YMCA Aquatic Department implemented a campaign called “NO SECOND CHANCE” with their Camp Waterfronts three summers ago to address the need of educating staff on drowning situations that occur in the summer months. Two years ago, we implemented it with our year-round staff to focus on safety for all who use our pools. Starting this Fall, we now conduct mandatory swim testing on all members who use our pool during Family Swim times. Information on procedures for this swim testing will be available on our website and posted around our facility. All those attending Family Swim will need to be tested before participating in Family Swim. Aquatic staff will be available to test members 15 years and younger during all Family Swim times.

Recreational Gymnastics And Diving

Recreational Gymnastics And Diving

THE NEW CANAAN YMCA OFFERS PROGRAMS AT THE FOLLOWING LEVELS:

DIVE-GYM CLASS A great way to tie two sports into one great experience, this class is one hour of gymnastics and one hour of diving instruction.

SPARKLERS (Kindergarten & 1st Grade) This beginner class is a starting point for those ready for a structured format in our recreational gymnastics program. Our instructors will incorporate a fun, caring environment with a learning atmosphere, to help children develop basic gymnastic moves that will help them improve involvement in all sports, especially gymnastics. Our goal is to allow children to have fun while having a gymnastics experience. We will challenge athletes individually. Skills include basic tumbling, and we encourage the YMCA’s four core values.

Gymnastics segment: A structured class with an experienced instructor. Learn basic gymnastics skills to improve strength, flexibility, and body coordination. Diving segment: Learn to translate these skills into the water and improve overall diving ability. Ideal for athletes who have a limited diving list and who want to learn the backbone of the sport. Note: All classes start in the Valles Pool.

JUMPERS (Ages 7-9) A beginner group for children who want to expand their gymnastic experience, this is a structured class that includes emphasis on flexibility, conditioning strength, apparatus station development, and age-appropriate gymnastic activities. We will encourage participation among everyone, to help improve their gymnastic skills and increase each child’s enjoyment of the sport. Basic skills such as cartwheels, handstands, bridges, somersaults, and some beam and bar moves are the focus of this program.

FLIPPERS (Ages 9-12) This beginner-to-intermediate program is similarly structured to the Jumpers class. This class will emphasize skills at a more advanced level and is designed for those looking to reach the developmental level. Skills such as cartwheels, handstands, and somersaults should be mastered. We will improve upon these skills, as well as focus on more advanced skills, such as front and back walkovers, roundoffs, front and back-hip circles, and pirouettes. COACHING STAFF: Matt Belanger Krista Carmel Allison Coleman Kady Holland Lauren Kahan

For more information, contact Joe Somma at (203) 966-4528, ext. 159, or jsomma@newcanaanymca.org

POWER TUMBLING (Ages 10-18) For cheerleaders, gymnasts, and tumblers! Power tumbling is for gymnasts, cheerleaders, and power tumblers of all levels. Power tumbling is becoming a popular form of gymnastics and differs from basic gymnastics in that it focuses on doing flips and twists in the air. It incorporates some traditional gymnastics moves and elevates them into a series of jumping and spinning movements in the air that take skill and practice to complete. If you want to go to several steps beyond somersaults and cartwheels, try this class!

Gymnasts will train with others of the same ability and skill level who are looking to showcase their skills in a low-key environment. Skill sets include all apparatus. We will enhance upon front and back handsprings, arials, round-off sequences and more. We will work pirouettes and cartwheels, as well as back walkovers. Bars will include cast squat-ons, cast to horizontal, kips, and dismounts. Other basic and competitive skills on various apparatus will be the main focus of this class.

THE SENIOR MEN’S CLUB OF NEW CANAAN The Senior Men’s Club of New Canaan was founded in 1977 by a group of YMCA racquetball players. Today the Club welcomes men 55 years of age and older who are residents of, or own property in, New Canaan. YMCA membership is not necessary, but SMC membership applications are available at the YMCA on South Avenue. The Club is involved in many service activities within the town and schools. The club has recreational activities that include amateur chefs, bridge, golf, paddle tennis, outdoor tennis, photography, hikes and walks, racquetball, and computer flying. We also have a Friday lunch outing each month. We include monthly day and/or evening trips which incorporate theaters/restaurants, symphonies, museums, and other cultural events. Also, we host many famous and riveting speakers at our Friday meetings. Come spend time with us! For more information, log on to www.smcnc.org or call Pam Libertiny, Human Resources Director at the YMCA at (203) 966-4528, extension 128.

Let us bring our bag of tricks to you with PA on Wheels! Groups who take part in our Project Adventure on Wheels program will be required to figure out problems, overcome obstacles, and work as a team to complete a task within certain boundaries and sometimes within a time limit, much like “real life.” What your group will get out of it is a boosted morale toward stressful situations and seemingly impossible odds. Once they know they can overcome an obstacle such as “Stepping Stones” or encourage their fellow group members to experience the “Wild Woosey,” they know they can overcome tasks at work, in school, or life. We work with organizations/businesses, school groups, alternative classrooms, out-of-school programs, religious youth groups, sports teams, camps, and clubs throughout the year either at the YMCA or your facility. Our schedules are flexible; please contact us about availability. Contact Davie Cedela, (203) 966-4528, ext. 141, for more information regarding program and fees and to schedule your group’s activity.

The Y Partners With The Community

THE ALL KIDS ARE OUR KIDS CAMPAIGN

Is Central to Our Mission of Community Service Each year, the All Kids campaign helps the Y build Developmental Assets among our community’s kids by funding these charitable initiatives: Membership and program scholarships. Inclusive and specialized programs for those with special needs.
