Kentucky Derby This year is the 150 anniversary of The Blaydon Races song, the Geordie national anthem. Another famous horse race, the Kentucky Derby, a nailbiting gallop around a Louisville dirt-track, began not much later. th

Taste and listen to the waters of the Tyne. Weird but true. Local chef, Sam Storey, uses the hydro-electric power of ~Flow, a sculptural 21st century waterwheel, to produce spectacular soup using the ‘living larder’ of the river: fish, seaweed, sea-salt, and more. The recipe varies depending on the action in the river! Meanwhile, the floating tidemill, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, powers electro-acoustic instruments that respond to the ebb and flow of the river. ‘Live’ music while you eat. The Trial Shift - Competition Final If you’ve watched MasterChef on TV, here’s a chance to experience the EAT! version first-hand as a diner in a live final - and your votes will influence the outcome. Inspired by the super-talented amateur chefs we’ve come across, we’ve created this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them to taste the professional chef’s life. A series of knock-out rounds will produce three finalists whose task is to be ‘Head Chef’ for a day at Blackfriars Restaurant. In charge of the menu, the cooking, the kitchen team and the service, each night the work of one finalist will be assessed by professional judges and you, the diners. ‘Eat Your Heart Out’ by Chloe Daykin
This funny and surprising new play was inspired by Chloe’s visit to EAT! NewcastleGateshead in 2011. A section of it is being presented as a work-in-progress by Northern Stage as part of their resident scratch night, First in Three.
Anna loves food and is fascinated by ingredients’ relationships with each other – do salt and vinegar really get on so well? After suddenly giving a voice to the thoughts of an angry onion in Waitrose, she believes she is a medium and that food is communicating through her to reveal its true feelings. When the food says what it wants, when it wants, things get a bit tricky... Can Anna’s relationship survive these constant disruptions? Find out how her story begins and then share your thoughts, opinions and feedback. Other scratch performances will also be presented.
