WELCOME TO JUICE FESTIVAL
www.juicefestival.co.uk
www.juicefestival.co.uk
Welcome to Juice!! Juice – NewcastleGateshead’s festival for children and young people – is now in its second year. The festival is a celebration of the creativity of children and young people and the fantastic spaces, places, venues and facilities that make NewcastleGateshead such a brilliant place to live, grow up in and visit.
The festival showcases outstanding work created by children and young people – opening with First Draft (see p5) and closing with an exuberant comedy Improthon (p29). Also catch Searching for Lear (p21), Show Us a Secret (p29) and look out for Poetry on the Metro (p24) – a collection of new poems by young writers on the Tyne and Wear Metro. If you are looking for something to do together as a family during October half term, NewcastleGateshead is the perfect place to be – from free events in parks, museums, libraries and galleries to world-class music, theatre and dance. Finally, across the festival there are opportunities to take part in some very special events – join Urban Playground and Gravity Style for their exhilarating combination of free running and street dance (p12), play out on KMA’s specially created Great Street Games (p17) or catch Fevered Sleep’s new production of The Forest (p26). Discover hidden gems such as the Stephenson Works building and enter the world of sleep and dreams for Shhhhh… (p8) And we finish the festival with a playful but completely serious question (p28) – would you trust a nine year old to give you a haircut? With over 40 events Juice has something for everyone – see page 30 for a handy guide of events for different age groups. Whatever you choose to come and do or see we look forward to giving you a warm welcome. Enjoy! Rachel Adam Festival Director

Break dance meets Brazil
Drum up some excitement
Together Apart, brings North East-based break dance group Bad Taste Cru together with AfroReggae, one of the world’s leading socially engaged arts and cultural organisations from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This hugely exciting collaboration brings explosive energy, rhythm, music and movement as it explores the similarities of two very different worlds.
Start your half-term holiday with a bang! Bring along an empty can and work with the AfroReggae team to make a custom-built drum, learn infectious rhythms from Brazil and then take to the streets of Newcastle for an open air celebration (please see image for approximate can size for the workshop).
Bad Taste Cru are the UK’s current break dance champions and one of Dance City’s resident companies. AfroReggae opened the Rolling Stones concert on Copacabana Beach in 2006 and has played major stages across the world. Forged out of the police massacre of 21 people in their local community in 1993, they have gone on to establish an international profile for their pioneering work in taking young people out of the drug and gang culture of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas (shantytowns), to create performances full of infectious rhythm. 6

Every Year, Every Day I am Walking 12 yrs+
(Contains challenging themes)
A South African journey you’ll never forget With the World Alliance for Arts Education, we welcome high-profile physical theatre company Magnet Theatre, who’ve been operating in and out of South Africa for the past 22 years. Tracing the story of a young refugee forced to journey to a new place through many dangers and uncertainties, Every Year, Every Day I am Walking is a response to the developing crisis facing refugees in South Africa. Originally commissioned by the African Festival for Children and Young People in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Every Year, Every Day I am Walking uses very little spoken language as the story is told through physical images created by the performers and an evocative original musical score.
Performed once before in the UK, at the 2008 London International Festival of Theatre, the 70-minute show receives standing ovations wherever it plays. “Creative sorcery - simplicity is the key to this profoundly moving tale about loss and survival. Exquisite.” Adrienne Sichel, Argus Tonight Directed by Mark Fleishman, with Jennie Reznek and Faniswa Yisa and original music by Neo Muyanga. Magnet Theatre receives generous support from The National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund. www.dancecity.co.uk Sat 31 Oct-Sun 1 Nov 7.30pm Dance City Box office: 0191 261 0505 Tickets: Adults £7.50 Under 18s £4.50

...to the Poet Laureate
From Exploding Popcorn... Taking the theme ‘My City’ new poems have been written by young writers across NewcastleGateshead. Ten of these poems have been chosen to be presented on posters and carriage cards on the Tyne and Wear Metro during Juice.
The sound of my breath dips in and out. So I begin night writing. The stars type themselves far out in space. Who would guess, to look at my sleeping face, the rhymes and tall tales I invent?
Be inspired by poetry on the move during the festival. This fantastic collection of poems by Robert Adamczyk-Hedley age 11, Ellis Caisley age 10, Mathew Dobson age 10, Max Gallagher age 11, Catherine Jones age 11, Shivani Lal age 14, Beth Leckie age 9, Kiran Lloyd age 13, Varun Narayanan age 16 and Ryan Todd age 9, can also be read on the Juice website and on www.nexus.org.uk. Poetry on the Metro
from Nightwriting, forthcoming children’s collection, Faber
is produced in association with New Writing North.
The escalator to cinema heaven, Popcorn exploding like shooting stars Forbidden Planet Is like walking in another universe When you venture in. Full of strange animals The River Tyne shining like the sun Each shop is a ticket to a new world. Matthew Dobson
“It was very exciting having my poem chosen and I can’t wait until the poems are in print for everyone to see!” Matthew aged 10

The People’s Poet
Shakespearian Comedy
Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts proudly presents our new poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, reading from her work.
Created in association with acclaimed theatre company Told by an Idiot, this new production of The Comedy of Errors offers children an ideal first opportunity to see a live Shakespeare performance. When two sets of identical twins, with identical names, are shipwrecked as infants, their father can save only one of each set. Years later, Antipholus and Dromio arrive in Ephesus in search of their long-lost brothers only to find that everyone there seems a little odd… Part of the RSC Newcastle Season 2009.
‘In the world of British Poetry, Carol Ann Duffy is a superstar.’ The Guardian New Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy writes for both children and adults. She has won numerous awards, including the Signal Prize for Children’s Verse for The Oldest Girl in the World (2000), the Whitbread and Forward Prizes, and the Lannan and E. M. Forster Prize in America. In 2005, she won the T. S. Eliot Prize for Rapture (2005).
This celebratory event is hosted by performance poet Kate Fox and young writers, who invite you to join them as they share their work from the Poetry on the Metro project. Look out for poems across the Tyne and Wear Metro during October and celebrate our city through the spoken word.

There is a place at the very heart of the forest. A place where things are not quite what they seem. People become animals, birds become music, wood becomes water, leaves become light. Everything moves (can you hear it?), everything changes (can you see it?). It’s all around you. It’s full of adventure. It’s bursting with life. The Forest is a thrilling new performance for 5 to 7 year olds, combining dance, images, sound and light. “A luminous production, wordless and freeform that holds the children fascinated in its grasp.” **** Time Out on ‘Brilliant’ 2008 “Fevered Sleep offers a lesson in how companies creating work for the very young are producing some truly sensational theatre.” The Guardian 2008 Like all Fevered Sleep’s work for children, the seating area and staging for The Forest is designed as one environment to ensure that the audience feel completely connected with the performance. Please note there is a specific capacity for children (56) and accompanying adults (36) so that each child can sit alongside the stage and enjoy an intimate, engaging experience.

Haircuts by Children
Mammalian Diving Reflex Would you trust a 9 year-old to give you a haircut? A trim? A new look? It’s entirely up to you and your young stylist. During Juice Festival, children from Walkergate Primary School will be working with Canadian arts company Mammalian Diving Reflex and a local stylist. And by the weekend of the 7 – 8 November, they will be ready to offer free haircuts for the public at Saks Newcastle salon. Haircuts by Children playfully engages with the empowerment of children, with trust in the younger generation, and with the thrills and chills of vanity. Haircuts by Children has been presented at festivals around the world including the Milk International Children’s Festival for the Arts in Toronto and the 2008 Sydney Festival. 28
