It’s estimated that 30,000 technical staff will be needed in the creative sector by 2017.* Level 3 Stage and Media Production Nothing comes close to the thrill of a show and as a member of a production team you'll play a vital role in every performance. Developed in partnership with the region’s employers The first of its kind in the region, this course has been designed by Gateshead College, in partnership with the Live Theatre, to provide you with the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for. You’ll work on productions with student and professional performers in music, dance and drama, enabling you to develop skills across all aspects of backstage production. This comprehensive course will cover: - Stage Management - Lighting - Sound - Props - Stage Design - Film & TV Craft.

You’ll also become equipped with an ‘Industry Skills Passport’ - skills that are vital for a career in this industry and certification for skills that employers want, including: first aid, rigging, electrical safety, risk assessment and manual handling. Delivered in partnership with the region’s creative sector A significant amount of your study will take place at Live Theatre, one of the country's leading new writing theatres, working with a professional production team on real projects. The remainder of your study will be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic Campus.

It’s fantastic that Live Theatre and Gateshead College have joined forces to create a practical course which will provide excellent on the job training to those interested in a challenging but rewarding career in theatre production.

Entry Requirements

By choosing to study at Gateshead College, you’ll benefit from our status as a founder college for the National Skills Academy for Creative and Cultural Skills.

Minimum requirements are 4 grade C or above GCSE or equivalent, ideally including English and Maths. You will also need to attend an interview. Although this is not a performance course, an interest in performing arts, bringing a performance to life and working with performers is essential.

Chosen due to our excellent track record in teaching and learning in performing and visual arts and our ability and willingness to engage with cultural sector employers (NSA Board), means we can provide you with access to a national network of contacts and great industry links.

Our team have a wealth of industry experience and have worked on projects for TV and film, as well as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Royal Shakespeare Company and the Scottish Opera. Combine this with a purpose built 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms and teaching facilities located in the heart of Gateshead’s creative quarter, it’s the perfect environment to study this course.
