From the editor How lovely that kindness is on the curriculum at Caves Beach Early Learning Centre (see page 7). Owner Karen Phillip believes instilling kindness in children will lead to a kinder world. I’m sure many institutions consider kindness an important value. But, by signing up to World Kindness Australia (part of the World Kindness Movement), the centre’s mantra is “always take the kinder option” and its principles become: respect rather than intolerance; inclusion rather than exclusion; hospitality rather than hostility; and gratitude rather than attitude. Imagine a world where those were the rules! What would become of war, terrorism, parliamentary “debate”, refugee policy, bullying in the boardroom and the schoolyard, and social media? The international movement aims to bring nations together and influence world leaders that a kinder world can be realised in our lifetime. Naïve, perhaps. But even Charles Darwin said animals that developed well-marked social instincts would inevitably acquire a conscience. So, to quote Kamahl: “Why are people so unkind?” Are they mad, bad, “just like that”? Or maybe hurt, wounded, in pain? Kindness comes from empathy. Long live empathy. If you see your brother standing by the road … - Alysson Watson

Ocean pod raises marine plastic threat mobile ocean action pod designed to educate coastal communities about harmful marine plastic pollution has arrived on Newcastle beaches. The caravan-like pod features interactive displays on the man-made plastics endangering oceanic ecosystems as well as videos on the growing global environmental threat. As well as raising awareness, the pod will encourage the community to rethink the types of products that they buy and to support broader initiatives such as a deposit scheme for beverage containers. “This education pod is about spreading the message to end plastic marine pollution and I strongly encourage Newcastle residents to come and take a look while it’s at Nobbys and
Merewether,” Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said. About 80% of marine debris comes from litter on land, pouring out of homes and plastic factories. Drink containers, which break down into thousands of smaller pieces, microbeads in facial cleansers, clothing fibres and tiny plastic pieces from factories are the main sources. The pod was created by the Total Environment Centre in partnership with the Boomerang Alliance, with financial support from the NSW Environment Trust. The pod will be at Nobbys for another week, and then move to Merewether. It will also visit Bondi and Wollongong. It will be open on Thursdays to Sundays between 10am and 5pm.
In a further vote for the revitalisation of Newcastle’s CBD, a development application to build two 19-storey towers has been lodged with Newcastle City Council. Miller Property Corporation wants to build the $130 million Verve Residences apartments at 464 King Street, Newcastle. The towers would be home to 197 households, ranging from 1, 2, and 3 bedroom residences, through to 5-bedroom sub penthouses and penthouses. The development, close to Marketown shopping centre, would also include retail and commercial spaces. The fan-shaped towers will be linked by an internal podium space with private recreational areas and gardens. Miller Property Corporation are the developers of The Darby, in Darby Street, Cooks Hill, and Eclipse, in Union Street, Cooks Hill. The architectural design is by CKDS Architecture and Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects.
Light rail, heavy impact? Have your say on the state’s plan The Newcastle community can have its say light rail plans from the city to the beach, with the release of a key planning document, a Review of Environmental Factors. Potential options for future expansion have also been flagged, including to Hunter Stadium, the university, Glendale, John Hunter Hospital, Mayfield, Merewether, Adamstown, and a loop through Hunter Street Mall. The report sets out the scope of the light rail project between Wickham and Pacific Park, potential 4
impacts during construction, and mitigation measures. It spells out changes to some intersections, bus stops and parking. In addition, the state government is investigating road improvements to remove pinch points. Parking loss on Hunter Street has been flagged as an issue, project co-ordinator Anna Zycki said. “We need to better understand what type of parking people want in the CBD, whether it be short-term,
long-term, loading zones, disability parking, and where that parking is best located,” Ms Zycki said. A parking strategy will be prepared in consultation with Newcastle council, businesses and stakeholders. The community is invited to give feedback, and it will be considered before a final design is completed. Construction is due to start early in 2017 and services in 2019. To view the documents, visitrevitalisingnewcastle.com.au or go to Newcastle library, Newcastle
council administration centre, Hamilton library, or Transport for NSW, 239 King Street, Newcastle. Drop-in sessions will be held on 14 April, 4pm-7pm, Fort Scratchley Function Centre; 28 April, 4pm-7pm, Newcastle Museum threatrette; 30 April, 10am-2pm, Newcastle City Hall; and 14 May, 1pm-4pm, Newcastle City Hall. Project team members will answer questions on 7 May, 8am-2pm, Clocktower Markets, Hamilton; and 12 May, 4pm-8pm, Marketown Shopping Centre.

The families have a link with Valentine school – the Hooper children went there and the Doolans still do – so they decided the wellbeing festival was the ideal launch pad. Wade and now teenage son Cameron have asthma, but for Kerri-Ann it was a whole new experience, which she relates on their 5K a Day in May website. “In the first few years of Cameron’s life, we were regulars at the hospital … I did not, nor did anyone in my family growing up,

Lone Pine replaced Newcastle Civic Park’s Lone Pine, destroyed in last April’s storms, has been replaced. The pine, which was planted in the War Memorial Grove in 1966, had to be removed after it was badly damaged. A seedling, sourced from Anzac Cove in Gallipoli, was carefully cultivated by Newcastle City Council gardeners and planted in place of the old tree. The new tree will take pride of place at this year’s Anzac Sunset Service, Sunday 24 April, 5.15pm.

Taking the kinder option he Caves Beach Early Learning Centre is the first early education centre in Australia to become part of the World Kindness program.
The centre’s owner is relationship expert Karen Phillip, who is an ambassador for World Kindness, and invited staff to become part of the process to
increase kindness in the world. Learning centre staff will work to ensure they include kindness as part of their daily programs. Director Ashleigh Hoban said staff had embraced the chance to teach and model kindness to children. “We hope this basis will follow them throughout their lives,” she said. World Kindness Australia chairman Michael Lloyd-White, who launched the program at Caves Beach this week, said he hoped to spread the word to all educational institutions. The centre’s mantra will be “always taking the kinder options”, and its principles will be respect rather intolerance, inclusion rather than exclusion, hospitality rather than hostility, and gratitude rather than attitude - Alysson Watson
Uber arrives in Newcastle Uber, the ride-sharing company that links drivers and passengers through a smartphone app, is set to launch in Newcastle. About 35 prospective Uber drivers attended an information session at Newcastle City Hall last week. Uber held a trial in Newcastle last year by offering free rides in the week following the April storm. Crucial to Uber’s expansion was a change in NSW law in December, making ride-sharing legal. Ridesharing is also legal in the ACT. Taxis still have exclusive access to cab ranks. Uber drivers are subjected to background checks and have to provide their driving records before Uber grants them access to its system.

Knights too good for Tigers fter a lacklustre start to the season, the Newcastle Knights recorded their first win of 2016 at Hunter Stadium on Sunday, edging out Wests Tigers in a hard-fought 18-16 clash. With both sides starting strong, it was the Tigers that struck first with Mitchell Moses poking a hole in the Knights’ defence, before offloading to James Tedesco who crossed the line in the 11th minute. The Tigers looked to be in again 10 minutes later, when Robbie Farah made a break from his own line, feeding the ball to Tedesco again who ran the ball 60 metres down the middle of the field. However, an untimely bad bass from Moses was scooped up by Jeremy Smith and, just two tackles later, Akuila Uate crossed the line for his first try of the season. The Tigers hit the lead again after Jordan Rankin finished off a 90-metre set for the Tigers, however, Korbin Sims crossed beneath the uprights and a conversion from skipper Trent 10
Hodkinson gave the Knights a two-point lead heading into the second stanza. The Knights scored again not long into the second half with Hodkinson combining with Jarrod Mullen to send Nathan Ross over the line; another Hodkinson conversion took the score to 18-10. The Tigers bounced back after 55 minutes of play with Rankin crossing for the second time, but it proved too little, too late. Knights coach Nathan Brown said that, despite a shaky start in the first half, the win would be a major confidence boost for Newcastle. “It’s good to get a win, there’s no doubt about that,’’ he said. “At home, when you’re sitting on the bottom of the table and nearly 22,000 people turn up, you’ve got to be very, very happy for the fans.” It was also a reversal of fortune for Newcastle in the A-League with the Jets shaking off their recent hoodoo to outdo the Central Coast mariners in an emphatic 4-2 victory at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday.

PORTAFILTER 2-16 Hanbury St, Mayfield – 4048 3205 Having been open since January this year, Mayfield's Portafilter is already causing a stir on the Newcastle coffee scene and, after just one sip of their organic Columbian single origin house blend, it's not hard to see why. They also have a great range of cold-pressed juices and signature beverages including the “black fizz” – a ristretto floated over iced sparkling water in a piccolo glass.

SIX OF THE BEST
There’s no denying that the people of the Hunter have been well and truly bitten by the coffee bug. s our taste for the humble black bean is becoming more refined, demand for quality coffee is ever-increasing. While the likes of One Penny Black, Welsh Blacks, Suspension and Glee loom large in our coffee conversations, Newcastle Weekly reporter Stephen Bisset cast his eye on six bean slingers that are definitely mixing it with the big boys.
BEARDED CACTUS 61 Victoria St, East Maitland – 0421 691 066 Since opening in the front yard of its owners in January last year, the Bearded Cactus has fast become a favourite of Maitland coffee connoisseurs. Such was their meteoric rise on the scene, the popularity of their brew – based on Peaberry beans, that they moved to funky new digs in Victoria Street. The Cactus is well worth a visit.
B-SIDE ESPRESSO Cnr Pearson and Smart St, Charlestown – 4023 1811 A perennial favourite here at the Weekly offices, B-Side Espresso offers up consistently full-flavored coffee made with beans 12
LENA’S LAKESIDE CAFÉ 444 The Esplanade, Warners Bay – 4965 7171 There's no shortage of stiff competition for your coffee dollar on the Warners Bay Esplanade, but the coffee at Lena's is up there with the best. With beans by Vittoria, this long-established cafe serves up a latte that ticks all the boxes. Robust flavours, tempered well with velvety steamed milk without any hint of pretension, Lena's Lakeside Cafe is well worth a try.
THE LOCALE 28 Alma Road, New Lambton – 4957 9998 Another café that makes fine use of Peaberry beans, the Locale has long been one of the leading lights in coffee and great food in the Lambton area. While they face stiff competition from the likes of Corner Lane, Sweet Bean and Black Circle, more often than not, you’ll find the Locale to be a bustling hive of activity, but the friendly and capable staff ensure you’ll never have to wait too long for your brew.
THE FERNLEIGH CAFÉ 89 Fletcher Street, Adamstown – 4023 4749 The perfect respite from that bike ride or jog along the Fernleigh Track, this little hidden gem serves up a rich, full-flavored latte, with subtle fruit acidity thanks to their Crema Black Caviar beans. Experiment and learn what colours suit you, then use them to your advantage. • Eyes on the waist. Accentuate your curves by wearing dresses that nip in at the waist or cinch in floatier dresses with a belt. • Tailor to fit. Invest in a well-fitting, structured blazer. Orchids are popular indoor plants, particularly for winter, and cymbidiums begin flowering in May. They have long, strappy leaves with long sprays of perfect blooms that open one-by-one, providing a dramatic display. They should only be indoors for as long as they flower; then find a shady spot in the garden or on a patio. Cymbidiums were once considered glasshouse plants that needed ongoing attention and division. But, no more: once the pot is full of bulbous growth, just repot to a larger container, using a good orchid potting mix. Fertilising is important. Apply Bounce Back as a spring boost and Searles Flourish for orchids every 7 to 14 days. Imported Phalaenopsis orchids look beautiful in flower, but may not continue producing in Australian conditions. An ideal indoor plant requiring light but

not direct sunlight, they have no bulb to store water, making misting of roots and underside of leaves important. Water over the pot once a week and place the orchid on a bed of stones high enough to keep the bottom of the pot out of water. Phalaenopsis flower more than once from the same spike. When the flowers die, cut the spike just below where the first flower was, above a node. Visit orchid shows to learn more. The Native Orchid Society’s Autumn Orchid Spectacular is at Cardiff Bowling Club, 16-17 April. The Maitland and Coalfields District Orchid Society holds its Autumn Orchid Show from 28-30 April. Real estate done differently
Choosing the right agent to sell your home is one of the biggest decisions you need to make. And don’t think that they are all the same! They are not! The choice you make could potentially cost you the equivalent of years of wages that could have been in your bank account! The things I look for in an exceptional agent: 1. Do I feel at ease with them? Does my intuition say that they respect me, will value my opinions and are committed to putting in the extra work it takes to get every last dollar out there for me? 2. Do they have high quality marketing? 3. Are they a seasoned, expert negotiator? (PS. just because an agent has been around for a long time or even owns their own business, it doesn’t mean that they are good at negotiating. Having trained as a psychologist and mediator, and having worked professionally in dealing with crisis negotiation on a day to day basis, I thrive in this area.
Thinking of shifting, but feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start? Regardless of the stage of life you’re in, we understand what a major decision it is to sell your home and move - whether it be to downsize or upsize while balancing careers and family. That’s why we can take much of that pressure from you with our CONCIERGE SERVICE. We can professionally organise as much or as little as you would like us to… from the moment you think about selling your home (eg. organising one of our preferred tradies, gardeners or cleaners) right through to professionally packing and relocating furniture and belongings, organising your final settlement house clean… and even helping your dog or cat move with care and attention! We are your concierge angels… that ease the burden and make things happen as effortlessly as they can! Give Lisa a call today on 0408 374 244 to discuss your needs.

PICK OF THE WEEK Terminator 2: Judgment Day Captain America:
The Help Friday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2011) Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling book is the platform for this moving work set in 1960s Mississippi. Directed by Tate Taylor, the story is based on the lives of three women from very different backgrounds who break all societal rules to start a secret writing project, bonding them as friends forever. With powerful performances from Emma Stone (above), Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer as the unlikely sisterhood, the courageous characters deliver a punchy statement about the Civil Rights era.
Friday
Saturday, PRIME7, 9.30pm, M (1991) James Cameron’s all-conquering sequel to his 1984 sci-fi classic occupies the same iconic status as 2001 and Star Wars. Arnold Schwarzenegger (above) returns as the cyborg protagonist – like the tin man in search of a heart – to defend the Connor family (Linda Hamilton and Edward Furlong) against a liquidmetal killing machine (Robert Patrick), and hence, prevent a nuclear apocalypse. Like Arnie’s classic phrase, “I’ll be back”, to be short and to the point, the special effects are extraordinary.
The Winter Soldier
Thursday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2014) Bursting at the seams with its cavalcade of superheroes and well-known stars including Scarlett Johansson (right), Emily VanCamp, Robert Redford and Samuel L. Jackson, Captain America: The Winter Soldier takes on the pleasing guise of a political thriller. Chris Evans returns as do-gooder Steve Rogers, who finds himself frustrated by the secrecy of his superiors at SHIELD, but a turn of events sees him on the run from the entire organisation, with the mysterious Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) on his tail.

It's a wonderful time for Miranda to turn her attentions to anything which needs serious thought or intense concentration. Older people or those with more knowledge or experience than herself, both at work and at home, will be quick to pass on advice and help. Other people will find her a delight to be around as her sense of humour will be infectious and to her delight a new romance or friendship will develop.

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
Work or cash matters have reached a vital stage and your spending habits need to be reviewed and a new budget put into place to ensure long-term security and prosperity. If you’ve been through a rough time romantically, you’ll now be able to turn the page.
Other people will find you a delight to be around as your sense of humour will be infectious and to your delight a new romance or friendship will develop. It's also a wonderful time for turning your attentions to anything which needs serious thought or intense concentration.
This is the ideal time to focus on improving your diet and fitness routine by discipline and commitment. If you know that you've strayed from the course you want for yourself, this is the perfect time for getting back on track.
All of your shrewdness, hard work, tolerance, patience and self-control are bearing fruit in your career and finances. If there have been any tensions in the family this is a good time for sorting them out. Listen to your loved one’s point of view and they will reciprocate.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21 Mercury enters Taurus placing your focus on personal values, possessions, how you earn your money and your attitude towards it. If you’ve had troubles keeping tabs on your cash flow recently, this is about to change and you will become much more aware of your fiscal affairs.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 It will be all systems go at work, but beware of stressful deadlines. Be sure to pace yourself carefully or it could all become a bit too much. Where your love life is concerned, you need to be open and honest and avoid playing games.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23 Don't be surprised if you receive a thrilling invite into a new social world where you will be able to cultivate valuable contacts. However, you also need to focus on being kind to yourself, taking life a little more slowly and not overcrowding your program.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23 On the financial front, don't be afraid to seek professional advice from an accountant or bank manager if you need to. When it comes to your health, there may be an issue you need to see a specialist about. Spend time indulging in your favourite pastimes.
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22 April is all about altruism and helping other people. You've got the right kind of energy to make a real difference; the more you share it, the sweeter the rewards will be. It’s a time when contacts will make the difference between success and failure, so don't be too independent.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21 You'll want to remain as centred as possible when Mars clashes with Jupiter until 27 May in an uncompromising, high-voltage opposition. Electrical glitches, short tempers and accidents are just a sampling of the things that may go wrong, so be prepared to breathe slowly before reacting to anything.
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19 A new work project could test your managerial skills, but help from colleagues with specialised knowledge will smooth the path to success. You will also be learning some valuable lessons about self-worth and selfcontrol. Instead of giving into all your impulses, hold back on revealing everything you feel right away.
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 The Taurean influence of this month could bring issues with ears, throat, tonsils, voice, the lower jaw and teeth. There may also be a tendency to gain weight by eating sweets. To stay hale and healthy, get plenty of outdoor fun and keep a diet and exercise diary.
