From the editor Summer is here and we’re in the home stretch towards the end of the year and Christmas. To help you with deciding what to eat during the festive season, our Taste section (page 25) this week features two delicious salads, perfect for the warmer weather. Also, we take a look at the efforts of the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen (see story on page 9) in producing more than 10,000 items for the people of the Hunter. The kitchen is a long-standing initiative of the local Uniting Church and all profits are put straight back into helping the community. I was lucky enough to visit the kitchen to see the staff hard at work and the constant stream of customers lining up was all the proof you needed that these people know how to make a darn good pudding. Also, just a reminder about our Christmas toy appeal which we are conducting to support the children under the care of Barnardos Australia. Gifts can be brought to our office at 19 Pearson St, Charlestown. You’ll find us in the blue building in between Chemist Warehouse and Lifeline. Please bring donations to us by December 15 to give us time to pass them on to Barnardos. - Paul Monforte

The ongoing success of the Port of Newcastle is a key part of the draft Hunter Regional Plan. Photo: Jamie Wicks.

Chance for locals to have their say on vision for the region ocal residents have the chance to help shape the direction of planning of their communities following the state government’s release of the draft Hunter Regional Plan. Planning Minister Rob Stokes visited Maitland to announce the plan which introduces the concept of Hunter City, which aims to concentrate jobs in strategic centres and

transport gateways including Broadmeadow, Central Maitland, Charlestown, Newcastle Airport and the Port of Newcastle. Connections between those centres and across the city would also be improved to allow more access to jobs, shops and services. New homes and services would be focused towards Hunter City and the region’s existing

Cessnock City Mayor Councillor Bob Pynsent gives the opening address at the youth unemployment symposium.

Strategy and action plan for youth unemployment A Youth Unemployment Symposium, organised by Cessnock City Council, has been deemed a success with more than 100 government, industry 4

and community stakeholders gathering at Kurri Kurri TAFE to develop a strategic plan for the issue. The symposium was opened by

towns and villages, taking advantage of existing infrastructure and services. Mr Stokes said the Hunter City idea recognised the benefit of coordinated planning for the area stretching from Lake Macquarie to Maitland and Newcastle. “Together these centres make up Australia’s seventh largest city and the second largest in NSW,” he said. “This new plan sets out a vision for Hunter City as a whole, while maintaining the unique character of each centre.” The draft plan highlighted coal mining as an ongoing priority industry in the region while also proposing developing alternative energy sources in the Hunter. However, the opposition criticised the draft plan as lacking details with Shadow Minister for the Hunter, Jodie Harrison urging the community to make suggestions to improve it. “This plan trumpets a rail line the government has removed, an airport the EPA has failed to protect and a port whose future has been constrained by privatisation,” Ms Harrison said. The draft plan can be viewed at planning.nsw.gov.au/hunter Local residents are invited to make submissions on the draft plan until 28 February and can also provide feedback via an online survey and interactive map. - Paul Monforte

Cessnock City Mayor Councillor Bob Pynsent who asked the audience to reflect on the human side of youth unemployment. “When we talk about youth unemployment, we are talking about our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews – the stewards of our region’s future,” Cr Pynsent said. “While we can trace our current predicament back to a number of factors including the legacy left behind by reliance upon the mining industry, we do not have to allow this legacy to be the author of our youth’s future.” “That’s why we are all here – to lay the foundation for a robust strategy and action plan to tackle youth unemployment, to work together to create long-

term solutions.” The five key themes to emerge from the symposium were: mobility and transport; youth transitions and pathways; supporting business to hire more young people; skills training and education; and generational disadvantage. The need for coordinated inter-agency collaboration and communication was highlighted. Potential solutions included using technology to create carpooling networks and establishing community-based technology, training and resource hubs. A strategic plan, based on detailed analysis of all issues and solutions discussed at the symposium, is being prepared and will be made available to the public shortly.

he Salvation Army Employment Plus and Hunter TAFE have joined forces to deliver an integrated service, based at the education provider’s Newcastle campus, aimed at making it easier for people to find a job. Employment Plus Managing Director, Greg Moult along with Newcastle City Councillor, Declan Clausen and Hunter TAFE Institute Director, Christine Warrington, officially opened the site along with a gathering of local employers, TAFE officials and Salvation Army representatives. Greg Moult said the day marked the beginning of an especially important partnership between Employment Plus and Hunter TAFE. “Our mission is to assist job seekers into sustainable employment,” Mr. Moult said. “To be truly successful in doing that we need the support not only of employers, but also experts in providing people with the vocational skills that employers require. “The importance of training and qualifications that meet the needs of industry cannot be

underestimated. That’s Hunter TAFE’s strength and why our site here at Newcastle and also Cessnock, Cooma, Muswellbrook, Wyong and Yass where we share facilities with Hunter TAFE, will prove so beneficial.” Depending on the specific needs of local employers, Employment Plus can develop pre-employment training for job candidates so they can integrate swiftly into their new workplace. The decision to partner with Employment Plus to deliver an integrated service on campus is all about making it easier for people to gain employment according to Christine Warrington. “This is a three-way partnership with local industry bringing demand-led training and our industry connections together with expert recruitment and job matching services for local job seekers – many of whom are students at Hunter TAFE,” Ms Warrington said. Employers seeking assistance to recruit new staff can call Employment Plus on 136 123 or lodge employment vacancies online at employmentplus.com.au

The Newcastle Basket Brigade receiving donations for this year’s deliveries to local families.

Baskets of generosity ! for Newcastle families p to 1000 families will receive an anonymous delivery of food and gifts this Christmas courtesy of the Newcastle Basket Brigade. The Newcastle Basket Brigade is part of a national not-for-profit

organisation called the Magic Moments Foundation of Australia. Baskets of food, toys and gifts are delivered to families in need close to Christmas. Coordinator Michelle Lee said recipients were told that the basket

was simply from someone who cares with the hope that they could, one day, pass the kind gesture on to others. “My team members and I feel absolute joy experiencing the smiles, tears, shock and gratitude on people’s faces when they receive their basket,” Ms Lee said. “This year, our goal is to deliver a massive 1000 baskets. We are aiming for the stars, and if we reach the moon, that would be awesome.” Ms Lee said a major sponsor would be greatly appreciated as well as volunteers to pick up donations. Help is also needed for wrapping days on Sunday, 6 December and Sunday, 13 December at the Wallsend Masonic Hall, 4 Metcalfe St. More information is available at magicmoments.org.au/nswnewcastle-basket-brigade

The humble kitchen churning out puddings by the thousand he Adamstown Pudding Kitchen shop has been an annual pilgrimage for thousands of Novocastrians since 1971.

Adamstown Pudding Kitchen staff Rachael Davies and Sandra Bevan with a selection of the thousands of delicacies made this year. Photo: Jamie Wicks

Part of Adamstown Uniting Church, the kitchen has produced hundreds of thousands of puddings but, more importantly, provided regular employment and donated more than a million dollars of profits to worthy causes. Kitchen supervisor Sandra Bevan told Newcastle Weekly that demand had been as strong as ever this year. “We are up to 10,500 puddings and we’re still cooking with another couple of weeks to go - we’ll probably end up making 11,500 and we sell them right up until Christmas Eve, providing we’ve still got some left,” Ms Bevan said.

“We have more than 40 volunteers as well as a committee which help organise everything. “We start getting everything ready back in June. Of course, it’s mainly Christmas puddings that we do but we have also branched out to dessert puddings.” Adamstown Uniting Church Reverend Rod Pattenden said the hard work in creating the puddings had always been done quietly and without much fanfare. “It’s an incredible effort to keep production going without fail for more than four decades. Our staff and volunteers are truly remarkable,” he said. This year, the Pudding Kitchen has teamed up with one of its beneficiaries, Lifeline, to also make

the puddings available at Hunter and Central Coast Lifeline shops from Woy Woy to Maitland. Lifeline spokesperson Emma Askew said the organisation was excited to be working with the Pudding Kitchen. “The kitchen’s dedication to investing the pudding proceeds in the community has been remarkable and is, of course, important to us,” Ms Askew said. The Adamstown Pudding Kitchen is located at 228 Brunker Rd. Orders can also be placed by phone on 4952 2724, by email adamstownpuddings@ bigpond.com or online at adamstownpuddingkitchen.org.au The puddings are also available at the Newcastle Farmers Market. - Paul Monforte

Former Australian Test captain Kim Hughes will be inspiring the young talent of the Hunter, when he heads up the coaching panel for the visiting Shaun Brown Cricket Coaching clinics in January. Organiser Shaun Brown said it was a great coup to be able to bring an expert with the standing of Hughes to the region. “It’s very exciting to have another Test captain involved this year, it will hopefully bring more young aspiring cricketers to the camps.” Hughes will be joined in the leading the camp by former Australian fast bowler Nathan Bracken, who will be remembered for his great changes in pace, using slower balls to deceive batsman. Bracken played five Tests and 116 one-day internationals for Australia. The camps will be held at Hunter Sports High School, 33 Pacific Hwy, Gateshead and Hunter Valley Grammar School, Norfolk St, Ashtonfield on 18 and 19 January,

(ankle) and striker Milos Trifunovic (knee) were ruled out. Teenager Braedyn Crowley was given his chance up front by coach Scott Miller and appeared confident in the role despite missing a relatively easy tap-in after a clever pass from Enver Alivodic. After not producing a shot on goal against Adelaide a week earlier, the Jets created plenty of chances against a side expected to challenge strongly for the A-League title. Friday night’s match at Allianz Stadium will kick-off at 7.40pm. Sydney are coming off a scoreless draw against Wellington and have not won any of their past four games. A-League ladder after round eight: Melbourne Victory 16pts (+7), Western Sydney Wanderers 16pts (+5), Brisbane Roar 15pts (+6), Sydney FC 13pts (+2), Newcastle Jets 12pts (+1), Melbourne City 11pts (+3), Wellington Phoenix 11pts (-1), Central Coast Mariners 5pts (-7), Perth Glory 4pts (-6), Adelaide United 3pts (-10). - Paul Monforte

SENIORS FEATURE THE AWARD-WINNING CLUB WITH NO HOME omputerPals Newcastle have 20 awards for excellence in 2015 but have nowhere to show them. While club members were accepting the awards at the ASCCA annual conference they were also packing up their gear from their home of more than 13 years. Club president, Lindsay Threadgate said that in the past 15 years, ComputerPals Newcastle had helped more than 3000 seniors with their computer skills. The club has more than 200 members, most of whom are pensioners and about 40 are active volunteers, teaching, providing technical support and administrative duties. “We have been lucky enough to

have a home at the heritage building at Islington Public School and while we now must lose that home we are happy to step aside so that this school with increasing numbers can cater for the children,” Mr Threadgate said. “As we are not funded, then as you might imagine, rental for any premises needs to be as low as possible and no more than $5,000 a year. While we have found a temporary home we need to find a generous landlord who could help.”

Palm Lake Resort Fern Bay has broken sales records due to the demand for upmarket over-50s resort-style living with world-class facilities close to Newcastle. Palm Lake Fern Bay has proven very popular as the resort is now over 90% sold out. Part of the attraction has been the no-entry, no-exit fee and the fact that some qualify for government rental assistance with on-site fees. For further information, a free DVD to be posted or to book a tour of Palm Lake Resort Fern Bay, call 1800 648 868. Other such clubs are provided with accommodation free by local councils. Mr Threadgate said the club operates generally in school hours. For more information, call Lindsay Threadgate on 4961 6576.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

US punk rocker Joey Cape will be in solo mode in Newcastle next week. Photo: Joe Leonard

CAPE IS ONE STITCH PUPPY

For the past 25 years, Southern Californian outfit Lagwagon have been one of the early definers and integral standard bearers of pop punk. The buoyant five-piece and one of the originators of the ubiquitous Fat Wreck Chords pop punk sound are currently on the road in Oz and while they only came as close to The Entrance this time around, Lagwagon frontman Joey Cape will be making a solo stop-over in Newcastle next week. Aside from Lagwagon (and many and varied side projects such as Bad Astronaut and Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies), Cape has been carving out quite a niche for himself as a solo performer with numerous split compilations and 7-inch releases (most notably with late No Use for a Name frontman Tony Sly) and three studio albums. The latest

of which – the cynical, melancholic and personal Stitch Puppy (a stark difference to his work with the decidedly upbeat Lagwagon) will form the basis of his Newcastle set. Speaking to Newcastle Weekly on the road with Lagwagon in Corpus Christi, Texas, Cape, a long-time visitor to our shores, said Australia was always high on his touring agenda. “There’s no doubt that I’m going to have a blast down there - I always do,” he said. “The shows are always great and, I don’t know if you guys know this, but you’ve kinda got a really beautiful country.” Despite the five-year gap between albums

(owing more to his hectic schedule than any creative malaise), Cape said that the writing and recording process for Stitch Puppy was a lot more streamlined, thanks largely to his experience hand-picking artists to record tentrack albums over the course of week in his home studio. “Yeah there was a slightly different approach to this one - it was a much quicker process for me than anything I’d done previously and a lot of that had to do with the One Week Records project that really enforces the idea of no second guessing,” he said. “The album is quite a raw and personal one for me and I guess I wanted to focus more on capturing that raw performance as well.” For Cape, who describes the craft of songwriting as a “form of therapy”, stepping out from behind the safety net of the band dynamic, in the first instance, was a daunting experience, but one which he said has ultimately opened up even more creative avenues for this prolific songwriter. “Yeah, I think my very first solo show was at South by Southwest in Austin and I was just absolutely terrified – I guess the whole idea of my mistakes being mine alone was quite daunting,” he said. “But, on the flipside of that, there is something inherently comforting in performing solo – you’re not hemmed in by things like tempo and it gives you another medium to work in and I’m definitely the kind of guy who likes to keep busy.” - Joey Cape – Small Ballroom – Saturday 12 December - Stephen Bisset 17

Everyone’s favorite Peruvian bear will kick off the Town Hall Hotel’s Movies Under Moonlight program next weekend.

PADDINGTON KICKS OFF MOONLIGHT FLICKS SERIES ith summer just around the corner, the folks at the Town Hall Hotel at Waratah are making the most out of their carpark by turning it into an open-air cinema for their Movies Under Moonlight series. Scheduled to kick off on Sunday 13

December, the regular event will be held on the last Sunday of every month from January 2016. With all manner of blockbusters, classics, comedies, romances, horror and action flicks on offer, the first cab off the rank will be the big screen adaptation of the iconic children’s

character Paddington. A young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realise that city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the kind Brown family, who read the label around his neck (‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’) and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist. There will also be a candy bar for the kids and, for the adults, the bar will be operating as normal. The movie will kick off approximately 25 minutes after sunset (8.05pm), so bring along your bean bags, low lying chairs, blanket and cushions or if you don’t want the hassle of lugging, you can hire bean bags and chairs on the night. Be sure to like Town Hall Hotel’s Facebook page to keep posted with the upcoming movie schedule. The event is weather dependent, shall it rain the movie will be rescheduled. - Paddington at Movies Under Moonlight Town Hall Hotel – Sunday 13 December. Entry is a gold coin donation with proceeds going to a yet-to-be-named charity.

The excitement about new Screamfeeder activity has been brewing for a while now. After fans went crazy for Poison City Records re-issue of the band’s first four albums Flour, Burn Out Your Name, Fill Yourself With Music and Kitten Licks, the buzz was pushed to fever pitch with some red letter sets on the Jebediah 20th anniversary tour and a powerhouse performance at Brisbane radio station 4ZZZ’s 40th birthday party. Their place as heavy hitters in Australian music remains ever-present with their fans’ wave of appreciation for their hit-laden back catalogue and captivating live shows. Inevitably, the next course of action was to record something new. Tim Steward (frontman) and Kellie Lloyd (bass) began writing together, birthing small snippets, recording on phones and re-listening on car stereos. Over time, fully formed songs started to appear – amoung them Alone in A Crowd. The band are due to drop a new album in the new year but, until then Newcastle punters can catch them in full flight at the Cambridge this weekend with Sydney poppers American Money and local noisemakers The Grounds rounding out the night. Screamfeeder – Cambridge Hotel – Friday 4 December.

90s indie rockers Screamfeeder are making a highly anticipated comeback. Photo: Stephen Booth

THE ‘FEEDER RIDE AGAIN with the band releasing their first single in ten years, Alone In A Crowd - a summery pop gem that proves this is one 90s three piece that hasn’t lost it. While never repeating past glories, the track still revels in Screamfeeder’s trademark punchy riffing, an unshakable rhythm section and a whip-smart pop sensibility.

PICK OF THE WEEK Blue Jasmine Saturday, SBS, 8.30pm, M (2013) Prolific filmmaker Woody Allen may have delivered one of his finest works to date with Blue Jasmine, a showcase for the amazing talents of Cate Blanchett (pictured). Cutting between her past and present life, we are presented with unhinged 40-something Jasmine (Blanchett), a former New York socialite, who after falling on hard times following the breakdown of her marriage to Hal, goes to San Francisco to stay with her free-spirited sister Ginger and earn her own money. A fascinating riches-torags story that examines themes of class.

Friday

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Remember The Titans Monday, 7MATE, 8.45pm, PG (2000) Polished if slightly clichéd sports drama which casts Denzel Washington (pictured) as Herman Boone, a dedicated football coach hired in 1971 to run a team of high schoolers. Racial tensions ensue within the group and the community at Boone’s appointment. But he sets about transforming his boys into a winning team – mercilessly training them like they’re a military unit. More subtle but no less crowd-pleasing than most of producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s work, with Washington’s emotive performance the key to its success.

Saturday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2012) Not too many films arrive with a weight of expectation as much as The Hobbit did. Based on another of J.R.R. Tolkien’s books, it tells the story of 13 dwarves, a wizard and hobbit Bilbo Baggins and their quest to re-capture the Dwarven homeland from a ruling dragon. Martin Freeman (pictured) is outstanding as Bilbo, and while the storyline is a little thin, LOTR fans will love every moment.

Making a commitment to becoming a better person and bringing her emotions under control will also dominate her thinking. Her luck in 2016 will be determined by the state of her mind. Nicki must keep her feelings steady and not to allow her heart to rule her head.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

This is the ideal month to take time off to be with close friends and loved ones and to simply enjoy life. With Uranus running retrograde you need to be selective of what you and the family do; taking on too much will only exhaust you.

Focus on decluttering your home; it'll clear your head too. Also avoid trying to please everyone as you'll gain respect if you hold your ground. On a practical note if your finances have been feeling the pinch it's the ideal time to revise your budget.

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

Focus on your second family. If you're away from home this holiday season, host a feast for your orphan friends. Uranus is Retrograde and people from your past may re-enter your life, relatives you haven't seen for a while or even friends you went to school with may resurface.

Focus on working out strategies for your goals in 2016; be clear about what you want, get organised and tie up any loose ends. If you're serious about decluttering, why not hold a garage sale. Avoid taking yourself too seriously and focus on creating a light-hearted atmosphere.

Focus on being creative with decorations and Christmas cards and on being be the host/hostess with the mostest. Uranus Retrograde warns you about burning the candle at both ends, so keep everything in moderation otherwise your body will respond to the stress you’re likely to put it under.

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

Mars in Libra squares Pluto in your sign and if you don't nurture certain friendships, relationships and business connections, they will exit your life. Although you’re aware of the issues that confront you and how they restrict you, your psychic insights will provide the clues to overcome them.

Uranus is Retrograde this month so focus on your key relationships, both business and personal. Lay it on the table and get answers, however avoid digging up the past, it's time for a fresh start, so look forward and not back. Don't waste energy trying to cajole others.

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20

Focus on feeling your best; add summery salads to your diet and you'll be feeling a much-needed boost. Uranus is Retrograde so stay out of arguments by keeping your opinions to yourself. Keep calm and carry on; if a friend or sibling says something that stings, don’t be offended.

Uranus, symbolising long distance travel and abundance, is poised to make your relationship and career thrive. However, Saturn the great disciplinarian is in your sign until 22 December 2017 and is going to force you to get your finances and health into order.

It's time to socialise, so be prepared to be the leader of the pack when you suggest a fun night out with friends. Your inventive thinking will impress the right people, so stop doubting yourself. Those big ideas might work, especially with your creative approach.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Focus on projecting competence as an unexpected breakthrough will lead to a fantastic career opportunity. The social whirl is increasing but don't wear yourself out before the main event. If you've been feeling tired or run-down, a quick detox might be just the tonic you need.
