This week we welcome the lovely Carol Duncan to the Newcastle Weekly. A great many of you will know Carol as a long-time ABC radio broadcaster, and founder of the incredibly popular Lost Newcastle Facebook page, now with 22,000 members. As Carol tells us in her first Unplugged column on page 9, she loves this city enormously, and just as she did in her former radio days, it’s her passion for Newcastle, the wider Hunter, its people and its places that she will share with us each week. Not surprisingly, she starts with the Newcastle rail line, or, rather, the light rail line proposed to replace the heavy rail line. Whether that stretch of track truly did divide the city, I’m not sure, but it certainly divided armchair critics. RIP heavy rail, and welcome Carol! Another Newcastle icon is undoubtedly Nobbys, and as for many of us, it’s a favourite spot for Leo Della Grotta. Leo – real estate agent, restaurateur, bass player and teller of bad jokes – shares “My Favourite Things” on page 43. On favourite things (for some, anyway), it’s footy season! The Newcastle Knights kick off their campaign away against the Titans on Sunday. And comeback kings the Jets take on Perth Glory in the west on Monday. A tall order that, but we’re on a roll. - Alysson Watson

Carly and Tresne, who will cook at the Newcastle Show this weekend.
GIRLS ON A MISSION Celebrity cooks Carly and Tresne are on a mission to create happy, healthy individuals in schools, workplaces and communities. he Maryland couple, who became household names after their 2014 stint on My Kitchen Rules, are in-demand cooks
and guest speakers, but now spend most of their time in schools as part of their newest venture, The Happiness Mission.
Both are studying positive psychology through the Langley Institute, and combine that with their life experiences to design and deliver their programs. “Happy employees and students are more productive, efficient, resilient and motivated,” said Carly Saunders, 34, a former teacher who still lectures at university. “We’re bringing positive psychology and emotional intelligence to schools, giving the children tools and techniques to cope and become more resilient.” They’ve been to schools in the Hunter, Sydney and as far as Rockhampton since they launched the initiative last June. Their workplace programs, they say, can increase productivity by 31%, reduce sick days by 66%, and reduce stress by 23%. “We are working with Love Realty, who have the same business mindset and values around positivity as us, to help them boost productivity,” said Tresne
Terrorism fear does not match risk Our fear of terrorist attacks is like our fear of shark attacks, according to Newcastle University professor of civil engineering and global terrorism expert Mark Stewart: out of all proportion to the actual risk. “It’s human nature that these things are uppermost in our minds, but when we look at the evidence without getting emotional, there is not very much to worry about,” Professor Stewart told Newcastle Weekly. The director of the university’s Centre for Infrastructure Performance and Reliability will address the first Newcastle Institute public forum for the year on the likelihood of a terrorist attack in Australia, the capacity of Islamic terrorists in the West, and whether counter-terrorism expenditure mirrors the threat posed. “The tragic attacks in Paris in November show that the terrorist threat is real. However, there is a natural tendency to over-react to such events, and to massively inflate the capabilities of the perpetrators,” Professor Stewart said. “The annual fatality risks from terrorism in Australia is one in 8 million from 1970 through 2015 (which includes the Bali attacks). For the same period in the United States they are one in 4
4 million per year. “Despite this low risk and the extraordinary amount of resources put towards combating terrorism, the public still worry Global terrorism and the government still expert Mark Stewart. spends billions.” Professor Stewart said the events of 9/11 and the 24-hour news cycle had heightened awareness of terrorism, but expenditure in response had not been tested. “We have to be mindful to strike the right balance,” he said. “Money that is spent on counter-terrorism is money that is not spent on healthcare, or national disaster response, or highway safety. There are trade-offs, and we should recognise that. “There are situations that are so bad, such as war, where the cost is immaterial. While terrorism is tragic and dreadful and real, there is an argument that says it shouldn’t change the way we live and bankrupt our nations.” The forum will be held at Souths Leagues Club, Wednesday 9 March, 6pm. Middleton, 31, a former real estate agent and home renovator. The first of their public seminars called “Why Aren’t I Happy” will be held on Wednesday 27 April at Club Macquarie, at 6.30pm. Tickets will be sold through StickyTickets. “We decided to do some public seminars because, when we go to schools, the teachers will say, you should open this up to parents too.” They also plan to run an online course. But cooking is still a big part of their lives, and they’ll be in the kitchen twice each day during the Newcastle Show this weekend. “We’re doing sweet and savoury,” Carly said. The sweet dish is a dessert of white chocolate mousse, coconut meringue, macadamia crumb and passionfruit curd. The savoury dish is herb-crusted lamb backstraps with pomegranate and sweet potato salad. Turn to page 21 for a full guide to The Newcastle Show.
Jill Hall calls it quits Federal member for Shortland Jill Hall announced this week she would not contest the next election. After 18 years in Parliament, and six elections, Ms Hall said it was time to leave and her decision was not related to the redistribution of federal seats in the Hunter. Her move made way for Pat Conroy, Charlton MP, to stand in Shortland, and for Joel Fitzgibbon to contest the new seat of Hunter, as his current Hunter seat has been abolished.
Cycle safety laws New laws come into effect this week aimed at making cycling safer. Drivers will be fined $319 and lose two demerit points if they fail to stay a distance of 1-metre from a cyclist (where the speed limit is 60km/h or less) or 1.5-metres when the speed limit is more. Riders will also face increased penalties for not wearing a helmet ($319), running a red light ($425), riding dangerously ($425), holding on to a moving vehicle ($319), not stopping at pedestrian crossing ($425), and riding at night without lights ($106). From March 2017, riders stopped by police for breaking road rules could face a $106 fine if they don’t have a photo ID.

lifelong fascination with Australia’s “wild colonial past” has culminated in the release of one of the most authoritative tomes on bushranger sites in NSW and Victoria. Lake Macquarie author Gregory Powell has just released his 11th book, Bushranger Tracks, which goes behind the mythology of the bushranger, giving readers the true stories behind the legends and a guide to historic bushranging sites. “Many years ago, as a teenager, I visited Ned Kelly Country on family holidays and I visited the place where the Kelly Gang shot the three policemen – Stringybark Creek,” Gregory told Newcastle Weekly.

but, back then, it was a real adventure. It was snowing and it was in thick bush and it had the feeling about it that the Kelly gang was still there, hiding. Even though it was 1969, my mind went back to 1878, and that’s really the essence of the book – to show people where things happened, where they can get the feel of the bushranging days. “These people weren’t just myths of our history; they weren’t ‘will o’ the wisps’. They were actual people.” Well known are the haunts of Ned Kelly in north-eastern Victoria and Ben Hall in central-west NSW, but there was ample bushranging activity in our own backyard.
“People don’t realise the Hunter Valley was a real nest of bushranging right from the convict days right through to our lady bushranger [Jessie Hickman] of the 1920s,” Gregory said. “We had the early convict gangs such as the Jew Boy Gang, who possibly came as close to Newcastle as the Adamstown area. But they were certainly out around Mulbring and Cessnock, and Toronto and Rathmines. “Then we had the gold rush-era bushrangers such as Thunderbolt, who ranged for seven years, starting his career here in the Hunter Valley at Tocal, receiving stolen horses. His first major crime was bailing up the toll gate at Rutherford and that’s where he got his name, Thunderbolt.” Gregory said there were still relics accessible, including Jew Boy Cage at Mt Sugarloaf, now almost under the Hunter Expressway. “There are also Thunderbolt’s lookout at Barrington Tops and Yellow Billy’s cave out near Broke,” Gregory said. “There are plenty of places where you can go to discover the mood and the spirit of the bushranging era. The people change but the landscape where these momentous events happened remains the same.” Bushranger Tracks, by Gregory Powell, is published by New Holland Publishers. - Stephen Bisset
Victoria’s dream job ommunicating with refugees is as important as providing food and shelter, according to Newcastle journalist and refugee advocate Victoria Jack, who has flown to Greece to help fleeing Syrians. The 29-year-old Newcastle University casual academic has taken up a post with Internews, an NGO working to provide information to refugees travelling the Balkan route to Germany. The role of “humanitarian data manager” may not sound like a “dream job”, but that’s how Victoria describes it. “I’ll be involved in getting information to refugees about where to go and what to do, but also feeding back information I get from them about what they need and how we can get it to them,” Victoria said. “Part of the job will be
responding to rumours, such as borders closing; trying to find out whether they are true. “It’s a really complex challenge, because the population is moving. Some of the Syrians do have smart phones, and access to the internet, but many do not.” Internews has developed a website, NewsThatMoves, with “news for people travelling the Balkan route to Europe” in four languages, and an audio guide for new arrivals in Greece that is played on buses. Victoria was sought out for the job because of the PhD she completed last year: “Communication as aid: Giving voice to refugees on the ThaiBurma border.” She spent four months in border refugee camps in 2013 interviewing refugees and aid workers, and her thesis highlights the importance of communication, and develops

appropriate strategies to get information across. “The humanitarian sector hadn’t previously seen communication as a form of aid. But, without good information, how can people make decisions,” Victoria said. “It was this organisation [Internews] that inspired my thesis.” Victoria will initially work in Lesbos, Greece, but then expects to move on to the Serbian capital, Belgrade. - Alysson Watson
Boat owners in Lake Macquarie are being encouraged to switch to environmentally friendly moorings to protect marine life. Hunter Local Land Services will hold two information sessions on Tuesday 8 March. Boat owners are being offered a 50% rebate to switch from conventional block and chain to the Seagrass Friendly Mooring, invented by Port Stephens resident Des Maslen. It includes a helix anchor with tremendous hold and an innovative shock absorber that safely secures the vessel while preventing mooring tackle touching the seabed. With rebates, the cost of upgrading is $715 to $1,650. The 10 regular bowlers are inviting others to join them on the second Wednesday of the month at Charlestown Bowling Club. Bowlers compete in the standard way, but have directors to help them visualise the green. “Even if you haven’t played before, everyone from the group will be there to help you learn and no doubt they will become friends,” Gary said.
hen Gary Edman and his brother Rod, who are both blind, heard about a Charlestown lawn bowling group for vision-impaired people, they couldn’t wait to have a roll on the green.
Gary lost his sight five years ago through an inherited form of vision loss, and Rod lost his sight a year later. Their sister became blind at age 10. With the help of Guide Dogs, Gary trained with a long cane and now confidently travels, navigating stairs, escalators, trains and even cruise ships. “I can’t speak highly enough of Guide Dogs. They have opened up so many avenues for my wife and I to get to where we want to go,” he said.
Never having played before, the men thought the initiative of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and Blind Bowls NSW would be a great way to meet people. Three-and-a-half years later and with a bronze medal under his belt, Gary has proven himself a natural, although his real interest is the socialising. “All the bowlers will tell you they don’t

Novocastrians are like squabbling siblings ny of you who know me even slightly will know that I love this city enormously. When I started the Lost Newcastle Facebook group a few years ago, I just wanted people to see the city as the amazing and beautiful place that I see. It now has over 22,000 members. But sometimes, just sometimes, I want to send Newcastle to the naughty corner until it grows up. Novocastrians are like squabbling siblings: “Don’t touch me!”, “He started it!”, “It’s mine and you can’t have it!”, “She breathed on me!”, “He farted on my head!” You could not count on 79 hands the number of times I’ve thought: “Bloody hell! You sit over there and you sit over there”. There is nothing Novocastrians enjoy more than fighting over our historic and beautiful CBD:
think Surf House, Laman Street fig trees, the post office, rail line, Honeysuckle, Nobbys Lighthouse. I wonder how many of the Surf House development haters love taking visitors there for fresh oysters and mojitos whilst gazing upon the blue waters of the Tasman Sea (or is it the Pacific Ocean? Let’s fight!). Newcastle City Council has released its own urban renewal vision “Connecting Newcastle” and called upon Mike Baird’s NSW government to support it and get on with an integrated transport plan for our region. There are numerous pros and cons to the removal of the city’s heavy rail line and I’m happy to sit on the fence and agree/ disagree with lots of them. But there is one small point that I have found to be utterly absurd since
the day the city’s light rail project was announced: we will not be able to use it until 2019. Actually, NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance said: “I am hoping to have light rail operating in Newcastle by 2019.” There is a breed of young (that is, anyone younger than me) entrepreneurial type in Newcastle who are really having a go and doing incredible work, particularly in creative and tech areas, and thriving in spite of the years of dysfunction we’ve been lumbered with. I see some of the vitriol thrown at the current Newcastle lord mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, and wonder why on earth she would seek to do such a thankless job. But you know what? I think she’s having a go. And to those councillors of whatever political
CAROL DUNCAN UNPLUGGED
persuasion who are collaborating and working collegially to get things done, thanks! Even for the stuff that I may not like very much. If it helps the city to thrive and for our kids to benefit, then I’m all for it. I’ve just spent a few days working in Melbourne, an exquisitely grown-up city. All trams are free within the CBD (a blessing for visitors), and it has a vibrant social life, overflowing with cafes, restaurants and small bars. Newcastle can be a grown-up city too if only we can stop fighting over it and start fighting for it. Just get on with it! carol@newcastleweekly.com.au

Back to the future for new-look Knights hen it comes to playing down expectations, Bulldogs coach Des Hasler has made an art form of “flying under the radar”. Then there’s Knights coach Nathan Brown, who it seems is still taxiing on the runway. Brown has named a young side for his first match in charge away to the Gold Coast on Sunday and, at the club’s season launch, he didn’t set the bar too high. “We just hope those young kids compete hard, buy into where we’re heading, are good people off the field and at training, and if they improve little bits each week, we can build a club around that,” Brown said. “That’s what I’d call successful for us this year. Where that takes us, we’ll wait and see.’’ When it comes to making predictions, coaches are in a
no-win situation. Aim too high and they are branded unrealistic, whereas a measured approach is perceived as lacking ambition. But I think Brown is on the mark. His side underlines the extent of the rebuilding at the club. Seven players will make their debut for the Knights, and for five of them it will be their NRL debut. Old hands like Kurt Gidley, Beau Scott, Clint Newtown, David Fa’alogo , Chris Houston and James McManus (concussion) are out of the picture. Gidley’s departure to Wigan cuts the last playing tie to the 2001 title. Gidley made his debut that season but was not part of the grand final side and, try as he might, glory has eluded him and the club since. Now, it’s like the Knights are starting over.
built the club on the three Ts – players had to be tough, able to tackle, and have plenty of tomorrows. Brown’s side clearly has the third of those tenets. We’ll see about the first two. The Knights are the reigning wooden-spooners, and the Gold Coast shade them for favouritism in that market this season. I’m confident the Knights will demonstrate a resolve not to go back to back. Surely that’s not too much to expect. • What about our other wooden spooners, the Jets? Amazing the difference a couple of class players can make. A play-off spot is now more than a mathematical possibility. Sixth-placed Sydney have stalled amid injuries, suspensions and the added burden of an Asian Champions League campaign.
Inaugural coach Allan McMahon
AHEAD OF THE GAME KEVIN CRANSON
Perth are two points behind, and two ahead of the eighth-placed Jets, but the two meet twice in the last six rounds, starting on Monday in Perth. Newcastle don’t win too often in Perth, but three points would put them in the box seat if Sydney’s slide continues. That would be some turnaround. HIT... Knights legend Adam MacDougall turning club sponsor with his Man Shake. Always ahead of the game when it comes to health and fitness. MISS... The Knights naming three captains for the season. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly. com.au with “Burlinson” in the subject field. Tell us your name, full contact details and two songs from the Sinatra at the Sands set. Tom Burlinson in Sinatra at the Sands, Belmont 16s, Saturday 19 March.
IT’S VEGAS, BABY hile legendary crooner Frank Sinatra may be the best interpreter of the great American songbook the world has ever seen, arguably the best interpreter of Sinatra’s formidable canon is Australia’s own Tom Burlinson. He will be tackling Sinatra’s best live set and arguably one of the greatest live albums ever released, Sinatra at the Sands, at Belmont 16 Footers this month and the affable crooner told Newcastle Weekly it would be big, bold and brassy. “We actually conceived the show last year to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Frank’s birth and, if you’re celebrating an occasion like that, you want to do it justice,” he said. “So, this time around I’ll be backed by an immensely talented big band and we’ll be pulling out all the stops.” Featuring such hits as Come Fly With Me, Fly Me to the Moon and I’ve Got a Crush on You, accompaniment from the Count Basie Orchestra and musical direction from Quincy Jones, Sinatra at the Sands was Frank's first live album and widely regarded as the definitive portrait of 14
1960s-era Sinatra. “Sinatra himself said that this was one of the most exciting engagements he ever booked and the album really is a portrait of a man totally in his element,” Burlinson said. “Las Vegas was Frank’s home turf and especially the Sands Casino, as he had shares in it and the Rat Pack performed so many iconic shows there.” His show was not mere impersonation, but plenty of preparation was still required, Burlinson said. “You still really have to get in touch with the emotions in the songs, which is something that Frank was just so good at. I mean, just listen to the way he sings It Was A Very Good Year,” he said. “You have to tap into that headspace otherwise it just comes off as an empty imitation, and I’m not interested in that.” Burlinson, a NIDA-trained actor who made a name for himself as the star of such iconic Australian films as The Man From Snowy River and Phar Lap, said that his affinity for Sinatra
was ignited as a toddler, with particular thanks to the album, A Swingin’ Affair, in his parents record collection. “I remember looking at that record and saying ‘let’s play the man in the hat’,” he said. “I kind of forgot about him and, as a young adult in the 1970s, I was listening to things like the Beatles, Santana and Crosby Stills and Nash, but I picked up a copy of A Swingin’ Affair one day and it all just clicked again.” Despite discovering a likeness in his voice to Sinatra’s, Burlinson kept it to himself. It wasn’t until years later, after singing a self-penned song, The Man in The Hat, on the Midday Show that his resemblance to Sinatra was noticed. “After I did that song, my representatives in LA heard about a production based around Frank’s life that was produced by his youngest daughter, Tina,” he said. “So, I sent a videotape of myself doing the song on the show to her and, before I knew it, I got the gig singing all of the songs in the early part of Frank’s life. The first hour of that mini-series is all me singing, which isn’t bad considering it was my first professional gig as a singer.” Stephen Bisset

The Bean Project will play the Press Book House on Saturday 5 March.
BEAN THERE DONE THAT aving played in various “straight-up” rock outfits in their formative years, Melbourne duo Ben Langdon and Bryce Turcato wanted something a little more laid-back and lilting with their next effort. Thus, the Bean Project was born. With Langdon on the guitar and Turcato on the French horn, the pair create a sound that has been
likened to “the odd marriage of Cake, City and Colour, and Kings Of Convenience”, as evidenced on their self-titled debut EP. Langdon told Newcastle Weekly the EP was a labour of love for the pair. “The writing took place over a period of three or four years and is a combination of stuff written quite recently and much older
stuff,” Langdon said. “When we recorded, we wanted it to be a pretty honest reflection of how we sound so there’s no studio wizardry or extra frills, just us and the songs.” Having only been a going concern since 2013, the duo have already crammed a fair bit in, taking out top honours in the 2014-15 FReeZA Push Start Battle of The Bands and making serious waves around Melbourne, playing with the likes of The Twoks and The Woohoo Revue. “Bryce and I had played in some rockier projects previously and we both kind of got sick of that. We wanted to do something a little bit different so, we just got rid of the rest of the band,” he laughed. “We released the EP last year but haven’t been able to get out there as much as we’d like because of uni, but now that’s done with we’re keen to get out and play as much as possible.” - Stephen Bisset
Starry, starry night The life, love and loss of Vincent Van Gough is the subject of a moving dance theatre piece to be staged at the Civic Theatre this month. Created and performed by new Australian dance company LissaJane Dance, Vincent explores the iconic artist’s life, his relationship with brother Theo and his constant battle with his inner psyche. Vincent features a brilliant cast of three Australian dancers combined with choreography from Melissa Lanham and captivating costume and set design. All dialogue used is taken directly from the letters Vincent wrote to Theo. It seeks to address the bipolar personality of the artist, so, while there is darkness, there is also euphoria and joy. The production has partnered with Beyond Blue and a portion of proceeds go to support this national advocate for mental health. Vincent will play Civic Theatre Newcastle on Friday 18 March.

home Be gone, grasshopper! arch will hopefully bring relief from the humidity that has hit the garden and gardeners this summer. I will personally heave a sigh of relief that I can put down the hose, for at least some of the day, and begin to address the problems wrought by the humidity. One that many readers will have experienced is black spot on the roses. A light prune to remove unsightly foliage and dead blooms, a hit with Sudden Impact, and a spray with copper oxychloride should improve their appearance.
My roses are almost leafless! Why, you may well ask, and I will find it difficult to answer in a ladylike manner without using expletives. Grasshoppers, in all shape and sizes! They even fly at me! The solution? I’m still searching for one. I have tried all possible products on the nursery shelves, even making up deadly cocktails. Now that all else has failed, I’m resorting to Insect & Mite Killer. One of summer’s great surprises has been the lack of army grub, which I suspect is a result of the high rainfall. This pest loves a

THIS WEEK... • Prune long growth on hedges such as murraya and duranta. Then fertilise with cow manure. • Rescue any cyclamen bulbs left in the garden, re-pot and fertilise. March is the trigger point for these exquisite flowering plants that provide great colour through until spring. • Cabbages and cauliflowers need to be dusted to deter cabbage moths, which lay grubs. Try plastic butterflies or make paper copies to blow in the breeze. • Dig out sad petunias and fertilise beds for planting autumn flowers. judy@newcastleweekly.com.au

hot, dry summer. Still, check the lawn, as there are a few crickets surfacing. Lawns will benefit from a light application of lime, then before the end of March apply a fertiliser such as Bladerunner to keep them growing until winter. Citrus should definitely be included in this month’s jobs – fertilising is most important. Remember not to use citrus food on potted plants! Prepare beds with poultry manure one week before planting the next season’s vegetables. Poultry manure should also be dug into gardens, where sweet peas will be planted on St Patrick’s Day. Don’t be tempted to plant pansies and violas too early, as they prefer cooler temperatures.

This home has been held in the same family for many years and, although old, there is still plenty of life left in this blissful cottage. From an investment perspective, it only needs minor improvements to turn it into a good prospect. Just think of the location and the possibilities to redevelop in the coming years.

PICK OF THE WEEK Lethal Weapon 2 Friday, NBN, 10.30pm, M (1989) Cop buddies Murtaugh (Danny Glover) and Riggs (Mel Gibson) return in a sequel that lives up to the first, only with a less dark edge. This time the two take on a corrupt South African diplomat (Joss Ackland) who revels in his immunity status. The action is the same, but things were much more fun when Riggs was psychotic. Arguably the best of the Lethal Weapon movies, with a great mix of breathless action and wacky comedy, most of the laughs courtesy of new character Leo Getz (Joe Pesci).
Friday
Crazy, Stupid, Love.
Hellboy Saturday, 7MATE, 7pm, PG (2004) As he did with Blade II, Mexican writer-director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) turned to another dark comic-book hero for this slick piece of action. This time it’s Hellboy (Ron Perlman), a cigar-smoking, red-skinned demon from a damnable dimension, who works for a secret paranormal arm of the FBI, which is headed by his adoptive father (John Hurt). The join-the-dots plot is hardly the film’s strong point – wisely, del Toro focuses on the extraordinary abilities of Perlman.
Saturday, NBN, 9.30pm, M (2011) Steve Carell (pictured) has earned himself the reputation as a hit-ormiss actor but it’s safe to say audiences will be impressed with this romantic comedy. Carell shows his versatility playing Cal, a guy who reluctantly finds himself back on the dating scene after his wife of 25 years, Emily (Julianne Moore), asks for a divorce. Cue womanising Jacob, (Ryan Gosling), who teaches Cal a few tricks in style and romance.

PHANTOM WINGS OVER THE NORTH In the adventure novel Phantom Wings Over the North (Short Stop Press, $19.99), twin teenagers Joan and Mark join their prospector uncle Paddy and his mate Bluey for a camping holiday in the outback. But the group discover much more than just a few small nuggets when they come across a suspicious mobile laboratory run by Eastern Europeans. Are they really
scouting for mineral deposits? Or are they somehow connected with those mysterious midnight aircraft flying in and out of the Pilbara? This engaging debut from author Desmond O’Connor will have wide appeal to teens and adventure-seekers. At book stores and online at shortstoppress.com

MY MAIN BASS The brute force of a Fender Precision bass tempered by the finesse of a Jazz bass pick-up in the bridge position for some extra mid-range cut. Tone for days. Slab maple neck, ash body, stock Fender bridge piece, reverse action tuners and a great paint job by my mate Richard O’Hara. Handy across all styles of rock music and so muscular.
My favourite things
APPLE IPHONE 6PLUS I feel absolutely naked and defenceless without this piece of kit. Want to see a truly poignant, heart-wrenching scene? Watch a real estate agent hand their phone over to a repairer. Oh, the tears, making deals with God. “Please, Lord, if I can get it back in a day, I’ll go to church every Sunday.” Presentations, internet access, contacts, databases . . . oh, yes, and you can use it to make phone calls as well.
NOBBYS The Sydney Harbour Bridge? Uluru? Undeniable Australian icons. But give me our little piece of rocky outcrop every single time. Nothing says “Newcastle” to me more than Nobbys. C’mon, our forbears loved the place so much they joined it to the mainland!

MY WIFE’S CAESAR SALAD
REAL ESTATE AGENT, RESTAURATEUR, MUSICIAN
Gianna’s version of the classic Caesar Salad, with iceberg, giant croutons, crispy bacon, parmesan, a perfectly poached egg. Words fail me (so does my weight). Honestly, I could look at this photo all day, every day. Fortunately, I can barrel into Max’s and get my hands on the real thing. Life’s good.
Real estate agent and restaurateur Leo Della Grotta is most at home on stage with bass guitar as part of the line-up of local legends The Years. The former journalist, 59, who started his career on the Newcastle Sun, lives with wife Gianna (who many know as Janet) in Merewether, and together they run the Beaumont Street, Hamilton, restaurants About Schnit and Max’s. By day, Leo sells houses for Ray White Newcastle/Lake Macquarie. - Alysson Watson
THE YEARS We are all proud of what we’ve achieved with this band. I’d say we’re the biggest drawing act wherever we’re booked. When we first kicked the idea around, lead guitarist Rick Dimecola hadn’t picked up an instrument in 28 years (since he played with us in Baron). In a short time, particularly after we recruited lead vocalist Vera, we began to foist ourselves on the general population. Nowadays, we’re a well-oiled machine with top-class production and a repertoire of ’80s iconic hits. See us at Bar 121 Lambton on 5 March and SJs Hamilton on 12 March.
