This week... From the editor Being made redundant from your job is right up there on the list of life’s stresses, especially if it comes out of the blue. Even if it doesn’t (and even when you’re sort of looking forward to it) being told you’re no longer needed in a job you’ve done for a quarter of a century (or more, in my case) is still cause for reflection. Which is why I’m so pleased to have Gina Cranson’s story in Newcastle Weekly this week. Gina followed her heart, and her natural curiosity, and found something she loved. Drawing bees! In re-inventing herself as a wildlife illustrator, the former journalist took a leap of faith, backed herself, and has not looked back. She’s even managed to enlist the help of her kids and employ her husband. What I like the most is her optimism. I’m sure it’s not all beer and skittles, but she’s smiling. And what a beautiful, infectious smile she has. If only you could hear her laugh! I also hope you enjoy our special Valentine’s Day feature, packed with giveaways. The actual day is Sunday 14 February, so you have plenty of notice!

QUEEN OF RE-INVENTION If someone had told journalist of 24 years Gina Cranson in 2012 that being made redundant would be “an opportunity”, she would not have reacted well.

ut her re-invention as a wildlife illustrator has been that, and more. “I think I’m really lucky to have found this thing that I love,” the New Lambton mother of two said of her new career and fledgling business. Curious about a blue bee in her garden, Gina did some research and discovered there were 1500-odd species of bees in Australia. “I thought, wouldn’t it be awesome to document them somehow; their different shapes, colours, sizes and behaviours.” Although she’d never studied art and was not at all certain she could draw, Gina enrolled in a natural history illustration degree at Newcastle University in 2013. She has a year and a half to go, but has already produced in-demand paintings and posters of native bees of the Hunter and NSW, and is working on posters for Queensland and Victoria. She has illustrations in entomologist Tim Heard’s The Australian Native Bee Book, and has worked with Michael Batley of the Australian Museum on

Housing for social change services had a role to play was an important step forward, he said.

Greg Budworth, Compass Housing.

A state government strategy to increase social housing through private partnerships will help break the cycle of disadvantage, according to Hunter-based Compass Housing managing director Greg Budworth. “The safety net of social housing can become a trap,” Mr Budworth said. “It becomes generational rather than aspirational.” More housing stock was important, but a more holistic approach to housing in which health, education, justice and community 4

“Housing will always go to the most needy, but it’s good to see it will be opened up to specific groups in the short term, such as those escaping domestic violence, or those who have just become unemployed,” he said. “With short-term rental tenures like these we can head off the demotivation that sees people trapped in public housing.” A Compass Housing project in Islington was an example. Built two years ago under the defunct National Rental Affordability Scheme, the Islington block houses about 40 people who have a connection with nearby Tighes Hill TAFE. “We are looking at supporting these young people, but then moving them out of their reliance on subsidised housing,” Mr Budworth said.

its catalogue of native bees. Gina has also had a hurried introduction to computer design and online retail. “I asked the kids to help me post on Facebook about my posters, and over the weekend I was overwhelmed by the number of emails I got,” she said. Gina and husband Kevin, now her business development and operations manager, set up an Etsy shop and the Hunter bee poster is on its second print run. Gina’s work will feature alongside that of fellow students and teachers at a Maitland Regional Art Gallery extinct and endangered species exhibition from 6 February. The artists drew their subjects out of a hat; Gina drew out a bee! “I laughed and laughed,” she said. The works will be life-sized; hers a tiny 8 millimetres. It may be dwarfed next to the Tasmanian emu and grey nurse shark, but the detail will be spot on. - Alysson Watson

Jungle Chief As a Newcastle Knights legend, Paul “The Chief” Harragon certainly came up against challenges. But he’s likely to face some of his biggest hurdles yet in the middle of the African jungle as part of the hit Network Ten reality show I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here. The Chief will be pitted against Courtney Hancock (ironwoman), Laurina Fleure (The Bachelor), Val Lehman (Prisoner), Anthony Callea (singer), Brendan Fevola (AFL), Dean Geyer (actor), Havana Brown (DJ), Bonnie Lythgoe (dancer), Akmal Saleh (comedian), Jo-Beth Taylor (TV personality) and Shane Warne (cricketer), in a quest to win $100,000 for a charity. The Chief will be playing for the Mark Hughes Foundation, set up by his friend and former Knights player and brain cancer survivor Mark Hughes and his wife Kiralee in 2014.

Clean up time More sites and volunteers are being called for ahead of this year’s Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 6 March. Last year, 530,000 volunteers removed 14,000 tonnes of rubbish from 6,890 sites across Australia, including in Newcastle and the Hunter. To date about 2,500 sites have been registered for 2016. Suggestions of clean up sites will be taken until mid-February, and volunteers can join up until the day. Streets, parks, sporting grounds, beaches, bush and waterways are typical rubbish hot-spots that have been the focus of past clean up days. Business Clean Up Day will be held on Tuesday 1 March, and Schools Clean Up Day will be held on Friday 4 March. You can register a site or donate at the website cleanup.org.au or by phoning 1800 CUA DAY.

A vocal supporter fter 23 years of supporting victims of violent crime, Robyn Cotterell-Jones says their rights have not really improved. But that does not discourage the Newcastle CEO of charity VOCAL (Victims of Crime Assistance League) from her job, for which she has been recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia. “I love it; it’s a challenge,” Robyn says. “I’m humbled that so many people have come out of the woodwork from so long ago to congratulate me.”

A public service career with Veterans Affairs, personal exposure to violent crime – the murder of her friend, and her own experience of domestic violence – and being let down by the court system led Robyn to VOCAL in 1993. “I thought I had a good understanding of the law,” she said. “It never occurred to me that we would treat victims of crime less well than we treat victims of war. “I was told: the DPP has no role to prepare you, no role to protect you, and no duty of care to you. I was shocked.” Preparing victims of crime – men, women and children – for criminal legal processes and other challenges is her main role. “They almost never have any idea what lies ahead,” Robyn said. “If we simply explain how it all

Differing treatment of victims in areas such as domestic violence, sexual assault, family law, and child protection, and confusion caused by co-existing state and federal laws, unnecessarily complicated people’s journey after crime, Robyn said. “If people truly understood what actually happens for so many victims, they would be outraged, as most victims are as they seek service.” Visit vocal.org.au or familyandchildsafety.org.au - Alysson Watson

We need to open our professional minds, be prepared to challenge some sacred cows, debate the issues thoroughly and agree to positive societal change that is less legal and more restorative. I don’t believe that, if victims ever get enforceable rights and representation, the roof will fall in.”

Julie Moulton, preparing for her 10th Loop the Lake on 13 March. Photo Jamie Wicks

Freedom on two wheels ulie Moulton, of Valentine, will take part in her 10th Loop the Lake charity ride on 13 March. Julie says she’s “not a gun rider”, but rides to Newcastle for work twice a week and enjoys a weekend ride. “Something happens when I get on my bike: the sense of freedom, of being aware of my body working hard, of enjoying

some ‘me’ time. It’s a feeling of being alive and feeling good,” Julie said. She likes Loop the Lake because it is not a race. “It’s a charity ride, with cyclists of all ages, all abilities, enjoying the chance to ride safely around our beautiful Lake and support a local charity. “The same helpful volunteers

provide direction and encouragement along the way; and even a sweeper vehicle for riders whose bikes, or bodies, have given up.” This year will be the 19th Loop the Lake. Started by Warners Bay Rotary Club members Alan and Laurie Beard in 1997 with 600 riders, it has now raised $1 million. The event offers cyclists three distances: 16 kilometres from Belmont, 50 kilometres from Morisset, and 85 kilometres from Speers Point. This year, organiser Warners Bay Rotary Club has formed a partnership with the Cancer Council of NSW. Registration of $60 ($70 on the day) for adults and $10 for children under 15 includes morning tea and muffins Morisset, a fruit stop at Belmont South, three water stops, a light lunch at the finish and a free pass to Speers Point pool afterwards. Riders can register online at loopthelake.com.au - Alysson Watson

Work starts at Green Hills Work has begun on the $372 million redevelopment and expansion of Stockland Green Hills Shopping Centre in East Maitland. Centre manager Chris Travers said normal trading would continue as changes were made to the carpark near KFC and Pizza Hut, making way for foundation works for the new Dan Murphy store. A new path will be created from Molly Morgan Drive next to the George Tavern, and there will be restriction of access between the northern and western carparks. Stockland will more than double the size of the centre to 70,000 square metres by mid-2018, adding 3,100 carparks. New shops will include David Jones and Target and there will be an expanded restaurant and leisure precinct.

Time for rugby league to tackle drinking problem ugby league is so predictable. Here we are in February and the NRL is embroiled again in its time-honoured pre-season scandal. This time – and not for the first time – it’s Roosters star Mitchell Pearce, caught on video full of sauce and bad manners and engaging in simulated sex with a fluffy dog. As you do … or, as rugby league players do. Pearce’s defenders argue that this is just another media beat-up, and that boys will be boys. But therein lies the rub. The game’s spin doctors would have us believe league players are role models. Heroes, even. They are sculpted into Adonises, adorned with tattoos, and groomed for public appearances by “media managers” whose job is to make sure they stick to a lame script as

they stand in front of an advertising backdrop. When a player is caught with his pants down, or shirtless and shih tzu-faced with a pooch in his lap, they have words like “remorseful” put in their mouths. Seriously, who says remorseful? The player is fined and/or suspended. He may go to rehab. Or jail. But he’ll be back, because this is a shallow talent pool. Then a figure like Russell Packer, the former Knight jailed for a drunken assault, is put up as a poster boy for league’s redemptive powers. But is this what the game wants to hang its hat on? Rugby league needs to get off the grog. I’m not a wowser. I enjoy a beer. But alcohol has caused great damage to rugby league, as it has to Australian society.

The biggest joke is when players put themselves on a booze ban. It’s an admission that the game’s entrenched booze culture is holding them back. They don’t have to be teetotallers, but why can’t NRL players be champions for the responsible consumption of alcohol? The game’s administrators must lead the charge by cutting alcohol sponsorship. The national and Origin teams are branded by beer companies. Please. If that seems fanciful, remember that the game’s best player used to get the Rothmans Medal, back in the days when the comp was called the Winfield Cup. Anyhow... • Take your partners please for the Jets Polka. One step forward, two steps back. With new players available and Leonardo finally starting a game,

AHEAD OF THE GAME KEVIN CRANSON

David Carney is left at home while the Jets lose 1-0 to Adelaide. A bad call by Scott Miller. The transfer talk may have been unsettling but, while Carney was a Jet, surely it was in the club’s interest to play him. They could have got something out of that game. HIT... Kurt Fearnley … edged out American arch rival Josh George in the 1500m wheelchair race at the Hunter Track Classic. Superb athlete, great competitor and thoroughly good bloke. Roll on Rio. MISS... Ben Kantarovski … suspended last week then misses the Adelaide game with “soreness”. What is this, AFL? sport@newcastleweekly.com.au

Sun Records All-Stars Wests New Lambton, Wednesday 17 February

Enter to WIN Newcastle Weekly has two double passes to the Sun Records All-Stars at Wests New Lambton on 17 February to give away. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly. com.au with "Sun Records" in the subject line. Tell us your name, full contact details and the name of the man behind the Sun Records phenomenon. Entries close and winners drawn at 9am on Tuesday 9 February. One entry per person. Permit No. LTPM/15/00427.

THAT OLD TIME ROCK AND ROLL FEELING emphis 1952. Radio DJ and producer Sam Phillips opened a little recording studio and record label that would change the face of music forever. Sun Records was largely responsible for the likes of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis and, during its 16-year run, the independent label produced more rock and roll records than any other label of the time, including an astonishing 226 singles. Now, 62 years since Sun opened, its palpable influence reverberates across all aspects of popular music; a fact not lost on Bill Culp, the star of a beguiling tribute to this phenomenon – The Sun Records All-Stars – which will be wowing Newcastle audiences this month. “In many ways, Sun Records was the Big Bang of rock and roll,” Culp, who plays the great granddaddy of rockabilly, Carl Perkins, in the show, told Newcastle Weekly.

“Sam Phillips was a real visionary and his influence and the influence of all those Sun stars can definitely still be felt today.” Culp said the show, which also features Johnny Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison, would take the audience on a comprehensive musical journey – from Sun’s humble beginnings to its dramatic peak as a global musical and cultural phenomenon. “There’s a lot of music and a lot of stories in this show,” he said. “The first part of the show looks at all those early Sun Records hits like That’s Alright Mama, Blue Suede Shoes and Folsom Prison Blues, while part two looks at how these artists evolved after Sun with songs like Heartbreak Hotel and Ring of Fire. It’s an awful lot of fun.” Culp said his charge, Carl Perkins, was one of the great unsung heroes of rock and roll. “He really was the quiet achiever,” he said.

“He was a hillbilly kid from Tennessee – a sharecropper’s son who was taught blues guitar by Negro fieldworkers. Carl then combined his style of blues playing with a love of country music to create a sound that was unique. “With Carl, and all of the Sun artists for that matter, there was a real honesty to the music – it wasn’t stage-managed, there were no PR agents, just a bunch of musicians discovering something truly wonderful.” - Stephen Bisset

SHE’S LIKE THE WIND over there – funnily enough with a lot of Aussie songwriters. But the end result is quite eclectic. There’s a rap-influenced songs on there, a bit of indie-pop and many different flavours. “I’m planning on releasing another single, Favourite Thing, in April and, hopefully, the album will be out in May. It’s very exciting.” After the tour wraps up, Coote said she was interested in planning another trip Stateside to capitalise on the success of Free Wind but she will also have another mountain to climb. February 5 – 11

PICK OF THE WEEK Superman Saturday, GO!, 6pm, PG (1978) Straight from the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” school of thought, the big-screen adaptation of the classic DC Comics character is everything that it should be: big, bold, exciting and, most of all, believable. A youthful Christopher Reeve (above) manages to embody Superman perfectly, a superb cast (Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman) adds weight and class and a charming script that doesn’t take itself too seriously all combine into one of those rare films that entertains all ages and refuses to date.

Inglourious Basterds

The Avengers

Sunday, 7MATE, 9pm, MA15+ (2009) Legendary Kill Bill director Quentin Tarantino clearly savours the sweet taste of revenge, serving up yet another gloriously violent tale of retribution. Brad Pitt (right) stars as Lieutenant Aldo Raine, the bloodthirsty boss of a crack squad of Jewish-American Nazi hunters, assigned to spread fear throughout the Third Reich at the height of World War II by brutally killing anyone donning a swastika. Keep an eye out for funnyman Mike Myers as a camp British general. If you’re a Tarantino fan, you won’t be disappointed.

Thursday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2012) Aussie Chris Hemsworth (left), as Norse god Thor, joins an all-star line-up of Marvel superheroes out to save the world in director Joss Whedon’s amped-up blockbuster that delivers on every action-packed promise. Called into service by special agent Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the dysfunctional star squad – including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Captain America (Chris Evans) – must go up against evil villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston). An instant classic.

A bit of self-control could do Elizabeth wonders. She needs to be more discerning in everything – from food to relationships. On her career front Elizabeth will be experiencing a rebirth, with all the regeneration that goes with it. That should boost her confidence. People are drawn to her quirky sense of humour so she should utilise it more in both her personal and professional life to get what she wants.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

The 8 February New Moon is the ideal time to network with friends and reassess your career goals. Neptune encourages you to splurge on little luxuries, but you need to take a responsible approach to all financial affairs, so don't let that extravagant streak get out of hand.

The New Moon on 8 February indicates a deepening of the bonds of love and affection with your partner; you may discover that they truly are the love of your life. It is the ideal time to turn your attentions to joint finances or to apply for a bank loan.

The 8 February New Moon is a time

The New Moon on 8 February is a good time to review your credit card or bank statements. Your focus is on economic security and a cost cutting drive becomes your new obsession. You might also have opportunities to learn why patience is a virtue!

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

The New Moon on the 8th is the ideal time to improve your public image and to start new career projects. You will have the urge to demand recognition for past efforts; no matter how this ambitious phase manifests, your prospects are considerably boosted from now on.

The planets are heating up your love zone so expect conversations with your partner to be deep and intense. For couples wanting a family, this is the ideal time to set plans in motion. The New Moon on the 8th is the ideal time to spend time with loved ones.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23

The New Moon on the 8th is the ideal time for a family gathering and for meeting new people. A loved one may be about to introduce you to someone rather special. If an old health complaint keeps flaring up, it's the right time to seek professional advice.

The New Moon on 8 February sees an increase in confidence. It’s the ideal time to focus on getting through all those chores both at work and at home, to fill your cupboards with healthy foods, to haul out your exercise gear and to get a few early nights.

to trust instincts over facts. Going with your initial gut reaction could be the best tactic when deciding what your next love move will be. Over-thinking the situation will only stall the passion.

Mars is in Scorpio and you are beyond confident; you’re radiating power. The New Moon on the 8th is the best time to deal with family issues. It's not fun to have difficult conversations with your loved ones, but clearing the air will make everyone feel better.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21 The New Moon on 8 February is time to sort out important paperwork and work out a budget for the rest of 2016. Your mind is on business and that could mean that you've got to deal with work issues even after closing time.

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19 With Mars in a difficult aspect to your sign you're ready to confront any unfinished business both personally and professionally even if this means having a few confrontations. The New Moon on the 8th sees you using your famous sense of humour to win friends and influence people.

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 It's all about you this month. The New Moon on 8 February is the ideal time to trust your instincts when making difficult decisions which are tying you in knots. Your resistance is based on subconscious motives, so look for subliminal clues and signs from the universe.
