This week...

From the editor Our cover story this week features the visit by renowned chef Scott Webster to Mayfield East Public School's for a look at their successful vegetable garden and kitchen program. The students were enthralled as Scott passed on his immeasurable knowledge and passion for fresh produce and cooking in general.

Also check out our My Favourite Things interview, on the inside back cover, with golfing great Jack Newton. This is my final edition as editor of Newcastle Weekly. I am proud to have been the founding editor of a publication which, in a relatively short space of time, has become a must-read for so many people across the Hunter region. The feedback from our readers has been overwhelmingly positive and the magazine will continue to grow. - Paul Monforte

Active lifestyles the focus of new university study

University of Newcastle researcher Dr Tamara Bucher.

utrition researchers at the University of Newcastle have developed an online survey aimed at investigating the preferred eating habits of recreational fitness buffs, with little currently known about food choices before, during and after regular exercise. It follows a recent European study in which participants revealed their personal opinions on exercise and eating behaviours. By widening it to Australia, the research team is hoping to identify common traits that can inform future nutritional recommendations. “People who exercise regularly or competitively tend to have strong beliefs about how food choices influence their performance and, vice versa, how exercise influences their appetite and diet,” researcher Dr Tamara Bucher said. “Motivating themselves with certain foods can be a positive thing but, when it comes to

weight management, if people try to lose weight by exercising then, quite often, it’s difficult because they may overcompensate with their food intake. “There isn’t a lot of research data on this so we’re hoping to find both beneficial and disadvantageous eating styles to help provide targeted advice for individuals who want to lose weight.” Dr Bucher said she was expecting some cultural differences between her native Switzerland and Australia. Swiss cyclists, for example, commonly favour non-alcoholic beer as a recovery drink after their ride, which conflicts with Australian taste buds. The survey, which is designed for people aged over 18 who exercise more than three times a week, takes about 15 minutes to complete and can be found at tinyurl.com/eatingstyles More information is available from Dr Bucher at tamara.bucher@newcastle.edu.au - Paul Monforte

said the decision not to pursue a public holiday for the show, announced by the Newcastle Show Association last week, would take a lot of potential strain off local business.

No go for show holiday in 2016 The Hunter Business Chamber has welcomed the Newcastle Show Association’s decision not 4

to proceed with a public holiday request for the 2016 event. Chamber CEO Christine Keegan

“The Association has agreed the cost to business for this one day is just too high and this should be welcome news for all Newcastle businesses,” Ms Keegan said. “This is both and important gesture by the Show Association and an enormous relief for many businesses in the community. “I now ask businesses across the Newcastle LGA to consider providing support to the Show, no matter how big or small - every little bit will help.” President of the Newcastle Show Association Brett Gleeson added that the cost to businesses was too prohibitive to justify pursuing a public holiday.

“The results of community consultation by Newcastle City Council clearly demonstrate that the community does not support a public holiday to the extent needed to compensate for the cost to business,” he said. “The likely financial impact of not having a public holiday will be significant as we anticipate lower patronage on Friday 4 March. Despite that, there will not be a public holiday. “We ask business owners and managers to provide some flexibility should their employees request a day off to attend the show on Friday.” Mr Gleeson said that the Association was seeking increased support of Hunter Business Chamber members and other businesses to provide the $150,000 needed to offset the loss of income from the lack of public holiday.

Singleton mayor John Martin congratulated the recipients at Château Élan. Cr Pynsent said the awards boosted the profile of the region and acted as a drawcard for the booming international tourism market in Australia which set records this year in visitor numbers. “It is local business owners that keep people coming back and spending tourist dollars in wine country,” he said. “Wine country businesses are certainly doing their best to assist in achieving Destination NSW’s goal of doubling overnight visitation by 2020.” - Paul Monforte

Westpac State General Manager, James Cudmore. A celebration lunch was also held featuring guest speaker, Victoria Cross Recipient Corporal Mark Donaldson. The service began on December 6, 1975 as a weekend beach patrol and has since undertaken more than 30,000 missions and saved thousands of lives across the Hunter, central Coast, Mid North Coast, New England and North West regions. Service Chairman Cliff Marsh said he was enormously proud of how far the service had come since its inception four decades ago.

here’s no denying that the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has been quite an important part of Novocastrian life – for 40 years in fact and, last Sunday, more than 200 people turned out to a special ceremony to celebrate 40 years of aeromedical services in the Hunter community.

“When I look back at where we started to where we are now, it’s amazing,” he said. “It’s just a very, very proud day. The Service can give our community and our region some security knowing that, if the worst things happen, there will be somebody here to help them out.”

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter service celebrated an auspicious milestone last week.

250 people met at Jefferson Park, Merewether, to welcome the iconic yellow helicopter before forming a giant number 40. Also, a plaque, commemorating the milestone was unveiled on the promenade at Merewether by Service Chairman Cliff Marsh OAM, Service General Manager, Richard Jones and

Eco grant for Thornton Public Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, has welcomed a successful grant application from Thornton Public School to help in raising environmental awareness among students. Mr MacDonald said the $3,500 NSW Environmental Trust Eco Schools grant would help the school to implement practical environmental education initiatives. “Thornton Public School has proposed the construction of a triassic learning track through two hectares of endangered Lower Hunter spotted gum ironbark forest,” he said. Thornton Public was one of 78 primary and secondary schools across the state to share in more than $270,000 in funding.

Jets winger Enver Alivodic looks for a chance against Sydney FC Photo: Getty Images

Sydney ends Jets’ unbeaten away run fter withstanding a prodigious Sydney FC attack for more than an hour, the Newcastle Jets suffered their first away defeat of the season at Allianz Stadium on Friday night.

With the Sky Blues peppering the Jets goal for the majority of the first half, Newcastle almost took the lead just three minutes into the second period after a well-placed cutback from Milos Trifunovic to

Enver Alivodic was fired just over the crossbar. Sydney finally went one-up in the 57th minute after Milos Ninkovic pounced on a loose ball out of defence, finding striker Alex Brosque who sent a left footer past Jets keeper Mark Birighitti, marking the 50th A-League goal for the former Socceroo. Despite the result, Newcastle coach Scott Miller said that there were plenty of positives to take out of the game, particularly in the second half. “Away from home, you can’t play for 45 minutes,” he said. “In terms of chance creation for Sydney, it could’ve been 3-0 at half-time. “We gifted that goal to them – that’s the experience, that’s life – you’ve got to move on from it but, on transition, it was an interception, based upon a bad decision at one point that resulted in a great finish from Brosque,” he said.

“I think there were loads of positives tonight. Irrespective of the result, the reaction in the second half was great, the work ethic was great and the commitment was also superb. “And, once again, our substitutions had an impact, which is key - you need that energy and Nick Cowburn went very close to scoring the equaliser which was great.” The Jets will now look to regain their spot in the top six when they take on fifth-placed Melbourne City at Hunter Stadium this Sunday. Kick-off is at 5pm. A-League ladder after round nine: Western Sydney Wanderers 19pts (+6), Melbourne Victory, 16pts (+5), Sydney FC 16pts (+3), Brisbane Roar 15pts (+5), Melbourne City 14pts (+7), Wellington Phoenix 14pts (+1), Newcastle Jets 12pts (+0), Adelaide United 6pts (-9), Central Coast Mariners 5pts (-11), Perth Glory 4pts (-7). - Stephen Bisset

Top young athletes given a financial boost Some of the region’s brightest young sporting stars have been recognised with $1000 LifeSaver savings accounts from the Greater Building Society at this year’s Hunter Academy of Sport Awards, held at Newcastle Foreshore Park. 16

Nicola Macdonald, 17, from Merewether, was named best and fairest athlete and also took out the outstanding female athlete award. Nicola took out bronze in the Woman’s U19 Scratch Event and silver in U19 team pursuit at the UCI

Junior World Track Championships in Kazakhstan in August. She recently won three gold medals in the individual pursuit, keirin and points race as well as a bronze in a scratch race at the U19 State Cycling Championships. Erin Cleaver, 15, from Charlestown, took out the award for best individual performance by an Academy athlete for her performance at the IPC Athletics World Championships in October. She placed fourth in long jump and sixth in the 100m. Ellie Lees, 17, from Lake Munmorah, was judged outstanding performer in a team sport for her selection to the U/17 NSW softball team last year, the U/19 NSW squad this year as well as selection in the Australian Womens’ training squad.

Kai Chapman, 16, from Cardiff Heights was named outstanding male athlete. Kai competed for Australia in the U/19 in Oceania Track Championships in New Zealand in October. Kai recently won three gold medals in sprint, scratch and standing lap and a silver in the 1km ride at the U19 State Championships. He won a gold medal in the 66th Spectacle of Naaldwijk in Holland in July. Hunter Academy of Sport CEO, Brett O’Farrell, said the awards were part of a broader celebration of the achievements of academy athletes and coaches. “We want to thank everyone who has assisted our athletes to achieve great individual success,” Mr O’Farrell said.

Ball Park Music will headline the Cambridge’s New Year's Eve celebrations.

IN THE BALL PARK FOR A BIG NYE Having recently come off one of their most successful European tours, Brisbane five-piece Ball Park Music are champing at the bit to see in the New Year in Newcastle. The indie-poppers will join the likes of Thundamentals, Steve Smyth, KLP, The Soorleys and Sleepers in a mammoth NYE Street Party that will see the Cambridge close off Wood Street for the festivities. “Yeah, we’re all really excited about this one – firstly because it’s a New Year's Eve gig and secondly because it will be our first gig in Oz for quite some time,” Ball Park Music guitarist Dean Hanson told Newcastle Weekly. “We have been pretty busy of late and the recent European tour went really well – we actually sold out a gig in London, at the Garage, which was an unexpected surprise – it’s great to sell out shows anywhere but London is particularly special. They were probably all

Aussie ex-pats but we’ll still take it.” The band have been on the road solidly since the release of their critically lauded 2014 album Puddinghead and the album is still gaining the band much traction overseas. Further, frontman and principal songwriter Sam Cromack also recently released the debut album, Goodlum from his alter ego My Own Pet Radio, making things quite busy in camp Ball Park Music. Despite this flurry of activity, Hanson said work on album number four was already underway and, while it’s still in the early stages, he hinted at something quite different. “We’ve got close to 20 demos done now, and we’re looking to start pre-production in the next couple of months,” he said. “The first three albums [Happiness and Surrounding Suburbs, Museum, Puddinghead] came about in quite quick succession and, I

guess you can look at those three as being in their own pocket, whereas the new one will be full of surprises.” NYE Street Party – Cambridge Hotel – Thursday 31 December.

he last time Jon Stevens took the stage at the Depot on Beaumont, he certainly must’ve made an impression, because he’s coming back to do it all again. For more than 30 years, Jon Stevens’ remarkable career as a singer, songwriter and performer has seen him achieve so much. This includes ARIA chart-topping success as

After expanding internationally to record his second album in Los Angeles, Stevens performed alongside Elton John. It was here that Jon met his future manager – who soon after would relocate him to Australia. Once on Australian shores, Stevens wasted no time forming the rock band, Noiseworks. Over the next five years, the band produced three top 10 singles and four Australian top 10 albums. Following the success of Noiseworks, Stevens decided to pursue opportunities on a different kind of stage – starring as Judas in the 1992 highly acclaimed and successful Australian musical production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. Fast forward to 2015, and he’s also added guest vocalist for INXS, frontman duties for The Dead Daisies and more solo gigs than you can poke a stick at to his bow, making him one of the most sought-after and passionate performers on the scene at the moment. There’s no denying that Stevens has one of the most formidable set of pipes in the biz and the chance to catch him in stripped-back solo mode is always an attractive one. as we’d like, when we do it’s an awful lot of fun and it’s kind of like slipping into an old pair of slippers – and because Newcastle has always been such a great rock and roll town, it’s always great to get back.” While he has been at it for almost half a century (also becoming a versatile theatre actor into the bargain with roles such as Judas Iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar, the Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance and Edna Turnblad in Hairspray), with a new album slated for the new year, an upcoming turn in the Monty Python comedy Spamalot, and further iterations of his beguiling Rock Show concept, it’s obvious that English is showing no signs of slowing down. “I just love what I do and I’m really lucky that I’m still able to do it after all these years,” he said. “That immediate feedback you get from a great rock and roll crowd is pretty hard to beat. I mean, things like TV are fine but you have to wait around for the ratings to find out how everything went, whereas with rock and roll and also with theatre, people’s reactions are right in your face.” Jon English - Wests Lambton Sunday 13 December. - Stephen Bisset

ack in 1981, when Jon English needed a backing band for an upcoming tour of Scandinavia, he recruited the Foster Brothers (John Coker, John Dallimore, Peter Deacon, Greg Henson and Keith Kerwin). That auspicious collaboration resulted in, arguably, some of English’s best work including the seminal double live album Beating the Boards, Some People, and Jokers and Queens with Marcia Hines. Fast forward some 30-odd years and, while all members are scattered across three states, making regular shows a hard task, the music is still just as relevant, as is all players’ passions for performing live, as Newcastle fans are sure to discover when English and the Foster Brothers take to the Wests Lambton stage this weekend. “We had such great fun back then and we were a really creative bunch,” English told Newcastle Weekly. “I remember first getting together in a rehearsal studio in Paddington and we instantly clicked and we’ve been clicking ever since. “While it’s hard for us to get together, these days, as often

time out FIVE FLICKS FOR YULETIDE FUN ith Christmas just around the corner, what better way to get into the spirit than catching a few cinematic Yuletide gems? Without even scratching the surface of Christmas flicks on offer, Newcastle Weekly has compiled a list, in no particular order, of some essential viewing this holiday season. Enjoy.

1. Love Actually (2003) Even the most cynical film-goers will find it hard not to like this schmaltzy and heart-warming comedy drama, set during the festive season, from director Richard Curtis. With a brilliant ensemble case featuring the likes of Colin Firth, Martin Freeman, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightly and Emma Thompson, Love Actually is a feelgood flick par excellence. Bill Nighy as the ageing rocker looking for a Christmas number one is a standout.

2. Scrooged (1988) This update of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol has plenty of comedic bite thanks to comedy legend Bill Murray and director Richard Donner. Murray stars as a ‘Grinchy’ TV executive who gets some lessons in the Christmas spirit from

the ghosts of Christmas past – a rough cigar-smoking taxi driver, present – an angelic but brutal fairy, and future – a shrouded Grim Reaper-type figure. A hilarious retelling of a Christmas classic.

3. Die Hard (1993) If you like a bit more bang in your Christmas celebrations then this iconic action flick is just the ticket. Bruce Willis stars as New York detective John McLane who is hoping for a quite Christmas with his family in Los Angeles but soon runs afoul of a group of international terrorists, led by a delightfully menacing Alan Rickman. Sure, it’s more action than Christmas, but it’s set during Christmas so it definitely deserves a mention.

4. Joyeux Noel (2008) This poignant, World War I-set French film tells the true story of the unofficial truce that was called between German and Allied soldiers fighting on the Western Front in December 1914. Front-line soldiers meet peacefully in No Man’s Land to share a precious pause from the carnage of the battlefield.

Billy Bob Thornton is, arguably, the worst Santa ever.

5. Bad Santa (2003 - pictured) Definitely not one for the whole family, this subversive Christmas flick has more swearing and sexual innuendo than you can poke a reindeer antler at. Billy Bob Thornton stars as, arguably, the worst Santa ever – a misanthropic conman who, along with his ‘little helper’, robs department stores disguised as the jolly man in the red suit. However, after a naive child believes he is the real thing, the Christmas jig may finally be up. Plenty of laugh-out-loud moments but not one for the kids. - Stephen Bisset

Sylvester Stallone reprises his role as Rocky Balboa in Creed

FILM REVIEW: CREED Having been a long-time fan of the Rocky franchise (honestly there are few better examples of sporting cinematography, aside from maybe Raging Bull), I approached this spin-off with equal parts 24

excitement and trepidation. However, with some whipsmart direction from Ryan Coogler (Fruitville Station) and stellar performances from Stallone and up-and-comer Michael B Jordan,

the pre-screening excitement was well founded. This time around, the story centres on Adonis Johnson (Jordan) – the son of Balboa’s former opponent and eventual

friend Apollo Creed, who was killed in Rocky IV. Wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps, Johnson seeks out the former heavyweight champ Balboa to train and mentor him. Balboa, who has said goodbye to the world of boxing in favour of running a restaurant, is reluctant to step into the young pugilist’s corner but, as we’ve seen time and time again, it’s pretty hard to keep Rocky away from the ring. While Creed is the first film in the Rocky franchise not to be written by Stallone, Ryan Coogler has paid great attention to the source material and has produced a film worthy of the Rocky canon. Verdict: A thoroughly enjoyable flick that shows there’s still plenty of life left in the Balboa legend yet. 4/5 stars. - Stephen Bisset

It’s not every day an internationally-renowned chef drops in to share the secrets of their trade, but students at Mayfield East Public School were afforded the rare treat with a visit by Scott Webster, owner of Carrington Place restaurant and the Throsby Street Providore at Wickham. he school is a participant in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, a not-for-profit initiative providing food education across Australia. The program began in 2001 and has been rolled out to almost 200 primary schools, courtesy of government funding and community donation. Students are involved in all stages of the food process from growing, harvesting and cooking

the large variety of vegetables grown on school grounds. Mayfield East Public School relieving principal, Allison Thompson told Newcastle Weekly that the program had proved a resounding success for more than five years. “Students from year two through to year six participate in the program,” Ms Thompson said. “You find that kids really thrive in this environment because it’s quite a tactile

environment and those kids that might struggle sitting still in the classroom really love this element. “One of the main benefits is that it provides our children with healthy food habits for life – that’s really the main aim. “The added benefit of that is that they get to grow, harvest and prepare food that, hopefully, they consider to be delicious from the fresh produce. “So, it’s really about getting together and sharing that food and enjoying it. “It’s really physical – they might be in the garden one week, working on the weeding or the harvesting and the next week in the kitchen cooking which is also quite physical. Ms Thompson said having a chef of the calibre of Mr Webster on hand to speak to the students was a great honour for the school. “It’s very inspirational for them with all his little tips about recognising the produce in the garden, about smelling it and not looking at labels and really getting a feel for what you are working with,” she said. “I think they will go away from today and really take that on board." Ms Thompson also said the large quantity of vegetables produced in the garden provided a source of income for the school. “When we have a lot of produce that is ready to be harvested, we set up a little stall on a Friday,” she said. “We advertise it in our school newsletter and on our noticeboard. “Parents come in and purchase it and usually it’s food that the children have cooked with in school and they will go home and cook with that with their parents." - Paul Monforte 29

But, when it comes to shopping for friends and family, I find it best to categorise my gift plan. PICK OF THE WEEK Hugo Friday, SBS, 7.30pm, PG (2011) Martin Scorcese proves his versatility as a director in this magical adaptation of the Brian Selznick novel. Asa Butterfield (pictured left) takes on the title role of a young boy who lives in the clock tower of an old train station in Paris, who spends his free time trying to repair an old automaton. Scorcese weaves the history of cinema into the story as Hugo’s story unfolds. The CG imagery is incredibly lush and helps make a great modern tribute to a bygone cinematic era. Also stars Ben Kingsley.

Friday

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Unknown Friday, WIN, 8.30pm, M (2011) Liam Neeson (pictured left) capitalises on his success with revenge thriller Taken by taking on another dark and brooding role in this action flick. After arriving in Berlin for a medical conference, Dr Martin Harris (Neeson) is involved in a car accident, leaving him in a coma for four days. On waking, he discovers that his identity has been stolen. His wife Elizabeth (Mad Men’s January Jones) does not recognise him. With the help of Gina (Diane Kruger) he sets out to establish who is behind this betrayal.

Monday, SBS2, 8.30pm, MA15+ (2009) Adapted faithfully from Stieg Larsson’s novel, this white-knuckle ride tells the story of disgraced journalist Mikael (Michael Nyqvist) and Goth hacker Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace, pictured right), who are employed by billionaire Henrik Vanger (SvenBertil Taube) to solve the disappearance of his missing niece from a family gathering 40 years earlier. A tense introduction to the trilogy.

JUNIOR GOLF “One of my favourite pastimes is watching and observing junior golf events, provided and organised, in the main, by Jack Newton Junior Golf. Watching boys and girls as young as five-years-old make a fist of the game then again out at eighteen years of age as an almost complete product is more inspiring for me than professional events.”

My favourite things GRANDCHILDREN “While the Newton clan and relatives have always been a close-knit unit, I must say I have been astounded how influential grandchildren are on the grandparents. My daughter Kristie and her husband Ben, have two daughters (five and two) and son Clint, and partner Carly, have a daughter, also aged two. To watch them grow in stature and develop their unique personalities is mind-blowing.

THE JACK NEWTON CELEBRITY CLASSIC “While challenging organisationally, it provides an aura that has no peer. With regular attendee Bob Hawke – who is the patron – acting as the glue in bringing everyone together in what may be classified as ‘oldhome week’ for three days.”

Jack Newton BUSINESSMAN, COMMENTATOR, FORMER PROFESSIONAL GOLFER

Jack Newton can lay claim to being one of the finest golfers the Hunter has produced. Turning professional in 1971, Newton won ten tournaments including the Australian Open (1979) and the NSW Open (1976, 1979) and finished runner-up in the 1975 British Open and the 1980 US Masters. His professional career ended following a near-fatal accident after walking into the propeller of a plane in 1983. Since then, Newton has remained heavily involved with golf as a journalist, commentator, course designer as well as creating a junior development program. The Jack Newton Celebrity Classic pro-am tournament has been running since 1979 and attracts some of the biggest names in sport, film, TV and politics. - Paul Monforte

STANDARDBRED HORSES “From my father who took me to Harold Park trots in my pyjamas, I have always had a penchant for the standardbreds. My son prefers thoroughbreds who are much more finicky and volatile by comparison. At home, I am breeding both which is an interesting exercise. Having said all that, I love being involved in their early development as we have the space at our home ‘Augusta’.”

LAKE MACQUARIE “I have pretty much been all over the world during my time as a professional (pre-accident) golfer. The place that I think is very understated is Lake Macquarie. My grandparents lived at Arcadia Vale and I spent most of my school holidays with them. I learnt to fish, sail and water-ski during those times, something I will never forget. I think the lake is without peer in the world.”
