thursday 11 february 2016

This week... From the editor My daughter is just back from Chile, where she bought me a lovely painting. It’s purple, with houses and cats – all of my favourite things! Actually, it doesn’t have a teapot, but I do have plenty of artwork with teapots, and actual teapots. I love our “Going Global” home spread this week; it marries décor with travel, inspiring a sense of calm, with a dose of nostalgia and a hint of adventure. It speaks of possibility. And it reminds me I must get a whole lot of artwork framed. That’s my favourite part of travel (aside from bartering) – collecting local handmade art from street sellers. A highlight of our nightly strolls through Rome’s Piazza Navona last year was meeting an artist who painted cats. I’ve lost her card, so I doubt I’ll make good on my desire to send her a picture of my ageing felines for a portrait, but I have one of her works. Another artist we encountered traipsing up to Prague Castle painted bold ladies in bold hats in the most striking colours. That will sit nicely over my dining table, eventually. Even my small silkscreen teapot prints (sold as greeting cards) remind me of my first trip to the National Folk Festival in Canberra – all its sounds and smells. Virtual travel, there on the wall. - Alysson Watson

Six-star Surfest urfest, the biggest surfing festival in Australia, will be held at Merewether Beach from 22-28 February. It was launched last week at Redhead by Surfest chief Warren Smith, with local talent Ryan Callinan and Philippa Anderson. Callinan, 23, will start his World Surf League campaign at Merewether in the qualifying series men’s contest this year. Last year he finished in the top 10 of the qualifiers, but exited early at Surfest. A local is yet to win the men’s event in its 31 years. Anderson won Surfest in 2009 and was runner-up last year when the contest held a onestar rating. This year it returns to six-stars, attracting the likes of world number three Sally Fitzgibbons and world number six Julian Wilson in a field of 347 surfers from 22 countries. Samaritans new CEO Peter Gardiner.

Technology will lend a helping hand Supporting people with a disability to transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme is the biggest challenge facing the Samaritans this year, according to new CEO Peter Gardiner. And new technology will be part of the solution. “There is a significant amount 4

of preparation work to be ready by July, and becoming more efficient in our back office functions and infrastructure costs is a big part of that,” Mr Gardiner said. While the Samaritans have worked with 300 people in a trial of the NDIS, thousands more will move to the scheme in July.

Improved information technology will mean more resources can be put into working with clients, Mr Gardiner said. The welfare agency is also looking forward to more state and federal government resources being available for social housing. “The Samaritans do important work in social housing, particularly around youth homelessness,” Mr Gardiner said. “We are encouraged that our support of young people at risk of homelessness will grow.” Mr Gardiner said he would continue, as retired long-term Samaritans CEO Cec Shevels had, to be a strong voice on issues of social justice and social inclusion. “We will continue to advocate strongly for people to have more control over their lives, and the NDIS is one way of doing that,” he said. The Samaritans, as the welfare arm of the Anglican Church in the Diocese of Newcastle, has more than 700 staff and 450 volunteers supporting thousands of clients across the Hunter and eastern NSW. - Alysson Watson

Fernleigh Track safety review Lake Macquarie City Council will review the safety of the Fernleigh Track after two walkers were hit by cyclists near Whitebridge. Warners Bay man Darren Brazel said he was left battered and bloody after a cyclist ran into the back of him at speed on January 30. His friend, Bob Sheldon, was also struck. Council’s assistant manager assets, Helen Plummer, said on Tuesday that a road safety audit would be undertaken over the next two months by accredited auditors. “It will assess the physical aspects of the track and compliance with relevant standards for shared pathway,” Ms Plummer said. The council will also review the feedback received on behavioural aspects of shared pathway use, and consider opportunities to work with the community to address concerns over safety across the entire shared pathway network.

The centre is inviting women who have been through a journey of healing from trauma to take part in the exhibition. “Some have written books, some are photographers, others are painters and seamstresses,” Ms Morris said. One artwork on display was effectively the “minutes” of a multicultural meeting of women who spoke three different languages, the Middle Eastern languages of Fasi and Dari, and Korean. “They couldn’t understand each other’s languages, but their meeting created this artwork,” Ms Morris said. The Mayfield centre was started 40 years ago by women for women, to advocate for gender equity, including equal pay and childcare, and health and reproductive rights. These days helping women recover from domestic violence is a big part of its work, in addition to helping support socially marginalised women, including older women, and women from multicultural communities who may experience isolation. In addition to the Forty Years Forty Stories exhibition will be a Forty Shoes display. “We’re inviting women to choose any sort of shoe and decorate it how they like, to represent their journey,” Ms Morris said.

Artist Sherryne with The Hunter Women’s Centre’s Ann Morris.

Forty years of helping women he Hunter Women’s Centre will celebrate four decades of service to women with a Forty Years Forty Stories exhibition open to the public on 7-11 March. The centre’s manager of business and strategy, Ann Morris, said a lot of women who had experienced trauma found it easier to express themselves through creative pursuits, and this exhibition was a celebration of that. “Art is a therapeutic application,” Ms Morris said. “Having a creative outlet is very healing, and we run art therapy programs for our women here.”

Indigenous leader kicking goals Newcastle High principal Nathan Towney is committed to helping students form a positive connection with school. The former Canterbury Bulldogs rugby league player and Wellington-born Wiradjuri Nathan Towney. Photo: Jamie Wicks man has become the 25th Aboriginal high school principal in the state. But he is keen that the spotlight should not be on his achievements, but those of his students, including more than 60 Aboriginal students from as far away as Goodooga and Boggabilla. Newcastle High, with a long tradition of innovation, has programs about Aboriginal identity and culture, some aimed at students who have not identified. “My job as an educator is to give them a purpose for identification, and help them feel proud of what it means to be Aboriginal,” he said. But, with 1100 students in the school, his focus is not just on Indigenous education. “Research says that if kids form a positive connection with the school then that helps with engagement, retention and attendance,” he said.

t was a milestone, not just for Newcastle, but for the whole of Australia, as the nation’s oldest school – Newcastle East Public – celebrated its 200th anniversary. Former prime minister Julia Gillard and retired high court judge Michael Kirby were the guests of honour at a formal dinner, and Ms Gillard launched the book To Climb The Hill – A People’s History of Newcastle East Public School 1816-2016. “Everything went extremely well and everyone who attended was very happy with all aspects of the celebration – which is great as it was so long in the making,” principal John Beach said. “All of the formal celebrations were fantastic. It was also great to see former classmates, who haven’t seen each other for years, reconnect,” he said. “One of the big highlights was a visit by former principal Merv Hall, who organised

the school’s 150th anniversary celebrations back in 1966.” The school commissioned Canberra artist Heather B. Swann to create a sculpture that reflected the school’s rich history, which was unveiled by lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes. “The sculpture is a series of stool benches arranged in a circle and cast in bronze, that represents the school’s first class in 1816 that had 17 convict children,” Mr Beach said. “Perched on some of the benches are bronze birds that are based on the work done by convict artist Richard Browne.” Newcastle East was established in 1816 by Henry Wrensford in a slab hut near Watt and Bolton streets at a time when Newcastle had a population of 400, including 38 children. “I had lots of people around me, but I still felt alone,” Carolyn told Newcastle Weekly. “I didn’t want this to happen to other people. I thought: there has to be some kind of support for people like me who are left behind.” So began a campaign to raise awareness of ovarian cancer, raise funds for research, and ultimately help set up a support network for families and friends of loved ones lost to the disease. And that campaign has largely come about through making jewellery. Kylie’s friends formed a running group, Team Running Bear, to raise awareness of and funds for research into ovarian cancer. “I made the girls some teal earrings to say thankyou,” Carolyn said. “It was therapeutic for me; I wasn’t coping well.” Word spread about the jewellery, friends got on board to help, and the Aspire 4 Kylie jewellery enterprise was born.

Through markets, forums, fairs, dinners and “do drop in” events at home, Carolyn’s jewellery sales have raised $60,000 for Ovarian Cancer Australia. “Once people realise it is for a cause, that it all goes to research, they are very supportive,” Carolyn said. Combined with family golf days and other events, the Bears have raised $100,000 for cancer research. Some funding has also gone to breast cancer research because of the links between the diseases. “So my teal line became pink as well.” February is ovarian cancer awareness month; 24 February is Teal Ribbon Day. Jets fans have a spring in their step ets fans have seen many false dawns over the past few years and won’t be reaching for the Ray-Bans after the 2-1 win over Melbourne City on Sunday. I’m of the opinion that for the Jets to win games under their penny-pinching FFA owners, they need everything to go right for them and for their opponents to have an off day, which was pretty much the case against the bigspending Melbourne City. That said, it was a bright and spirited performance, an uplifting victory and perhaps – just perhaps – the hint of a plan coming together. Olyroo midfielder Steven Ugarkovic was excellent on his starting debut for the Jets. He gets across the ground well, links nicely with his front men and has bite in his tackles. His energetic display

was a marked contrast to the laboured performances of Cameron Watson, who he replaced. Leonardo is finally getting his sea legs, and his ability to set up play or make runs straight through the heart of the defence keeps opponents on the back foot. His little tanty when he got replaced after 70 minutes wouldn’t have bothered Scott Miller one bit. His replacement, Morten Nordstrand, gave another quality cameo. His darting runs, creativity in tight areas, and slide-rule pass for Milos Trifunovic’s second goal had fans heading for home with a spring in their step. And the maligned Trifunovic scored another nerveless penalty as well as his clinical finish from Nordstrand’s inviting cross. He seems to be on a wave-length with the new Danish attacker that has

been frustratingly absent. The pity is that it’s round 18, and that Newcastle’s best player this season, David Carney, was playing for Sydney. • So what are we to make of the Carney transfer? The Jets said Carney was a key player, yet they let him go for nothing more than the money they saved on his wage. Carney said he was happy in Newcastle but sunk his silky left slipper into his old teammates as soon as he pulled the sky blue jumper on. Carney extends his career by a season, and the Jets get about $80,000 added to their 2016-17 salary cap. With the likes of Leonardo, Trifunovic, Nordstrand, Ben Kantarovski, Mark Birighitti, Jason Hoffman, Enver Alivodic and

British India will be a major drawcard at this year’s Groovin The Moo festival.

AN INDIAN SUMMER he last time Aussie rock stalwarts British India graced a Groovin The Moo stage, they were riding high on the back of their mammoth 2010 long player, Avalanche. Well, they’re coming back in 2016 and, in the ensuing years, thanks to a relentless touring schedule and two blistering follow-ups in Controller (2013) and Nothing Touches Me (2015), they have gone on to become one of the biggest rock acts in the country. Frontman Declan Melia told Newcastle Weekly that the opportunity to jump on a Groovin the Moo tour was always an enticing one. “We can’t wait,” he enthused. “It’s got to be one of the best festivals in the country and this year’s bill is just awesome. It’s great for us because it gives us a chance to get out into more regional areas that we don’t often get to play.” British India’s last slab – one that many pundits hailed as a career-best, Nothing Touches Me – dropped in 2015 and, in a tacit acknowledgement of the album’s inherent confidence and rock bravado, the single Suddenly was awarded a number 76 berth in the recent 2015 Triple J Hottest 100. Melia said that while such accolades were not the driving motivator behind the band, it was 16

still nice to be recognised for the effort. “It’s always quite daunting when a new album comes out because, while you can be confident that what you’re doing in the studio is good, you can never be sure until it hits the public’s ears,” he said. “That’s why something like the Hottest 100 is good, because it gives you a pretty good indication that you’re on the right track. “You often read about bands saying they don’t care about this award or that award but we really do care about that stuff; it can be really reassuring.” Having first burst onto the scene with their debut Guillotine in 2007, British India have continued to out-do each previous release, both sonically and sales-wise, and while most bands will tell you they feel no pressure to replicate previous successes, it’s something that is always in the back of Melia’s mind. “We definitely do feel a pressure, but it’s kind of more about striking a balance of what our fans expect from us and how we want to push boundaries sonically,” he said. “We don’t let it govern us but I will say that we maybe could’ve taken more risks with Nothing Touches Me. I’m not saying it’s a cautious record or anything but it’s about finding that balance which I hope we’re getting better at.

“I guess we’ve never really followed trends or played the game in that way. I think, in that sense, we’ve managed to avoid being painted into a corner,” he said. With the latest album still winning the band many hearts and minds around the traps, Melia said British India were wasting no time resting on their laurels and that fans could expect new stuff to come down the pipeline before too long. “We’re actually working on new songs right now,” Melia said. “We did a lot of demoing last year so, we’ll definitely be looking to sink our teeth into the next thing this year.” Groovin the Moo 2016 – Saturday 23 April. Hurricane Fall will pull out all the stops for Country at Caves.

CAVES GET COUNTRYFIED ith the likes of Cold Chisel and Midnight Oil visiting Caves Beach in their heyday, there’s no denying the idyllic beachside suburb’s place in our region’s musical folklore. However, there’s another musical happening that’s been putting the area on the map for the past three years – Country at Caves – and it’s on again this Sunday.

The event raises money for the Caves Beach Surf Life Saving Club and helps with the purchase of vital equipment such as resuscitation boards and maintaining their Nippers program. This year, local country sensation Hurricane Fall will be headlining the event and, given they were voted as the best live act to see at this year’s Tamworth Country Music Festival, they are sure to give punters great value for money. Also on the bill will be 2012 Starmaker winner Bob Corbett, who will be performing with his titular band of Novocastrian legends (Robbie Long, Sue Carson and Dave Carter), rising star Kristy James, the rollicking Bush Happy Band and Novocastrian troubadour James Martens. Organiser Mike Vee said the event had gone from strength to strength since it started in 2014, and that it offered something for everyone. “It’s a super day to bring the family and enjoy top-line entertainment in the best location,” he said. “The event is growing every year and it’s just a top day relaxing by the beach and listening to some great music.” Country at Caves will be on at Caves Beach Surf Life Saving Club on Sunday February 14 from noon. Tickets are $15, a gold coin donation for the kids, and are available on the day. - Stephen Bisset

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS The Year of the Monkey

Thursday 18th February, 2016 Chinese Lion Dance Performances

Eden returns The winner of the 2012 iteration of The Voice, Karise Eden, delighted Newcastle audiences at Lizotte’s in January as part of her Summer Soul tour. So much so that the down-to-earth singer is coming back to the Cambridge. Following on from the success of her electric, full band tour last year, the Summer Soul tour sees Karise strip things down to an acoustic trio format, providing the perfect backdrop for her soulful renditions. Karise’s heart-wrenching voice belies her young years and is most moving in an intimate environment.

Enter to WIN Newcastle Weekly has five double passes to see Karise Eden at the Cambridge Hotel on Thursday 18 February. ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

Friends are going to have a powerful influence on your future prospects and Uranus gives you added optimism and vitality. Obstacles that have irritated you on the work front will be swept away. You need to take a responsible approach to your finances so try not to splurge.

It's time to indulge that adventurous streak with a crazy day out. If you have to deal with awkward, demanding children or immature adults, you will defuse the most troubling situations by the use of empathy and assertiveness. You might be tested; be patient.

Get ready for a big storm at work or at home - at least one person is just about ready to lose it! You might mix it up in response, though that won't really get you anywhere! Relaxing with your loved ones will put you in a better mood.

It might take a bit more energy than usual to hold your tongue or keep your temper in check, especially when dealing with paperwork or bureaucracy. As usual, it's worth the effort. You take a keen interest in balancing your household budget to improve your financial situation.

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23 Your energy may be rather low and it's possible that you've been taking on too much just to show how impressive you can be. The fact is you need rest so make sure you get some. This month is an ideal opportunity to spend time with loved ones.

If you are in a new relationship it is the ideal time to meet your partner’s family. On the work front, instead of criticising others, put your confidence to work by pitching ideas to your boss and colleagues that you want to see come to fruition.

Neptune is making you feel rather suspicious about certain people and you may suspect that a friend's motives aren’t genuine, but don't act without knowing the full facts of the situation. At work, new projects will get under way and your career prospects are improving.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Secrets are exposed in the family and at work creating a lot of rumour mongering. However, you are best advised to not get involved in anything that doesn't really concern you. At home, you might need to seek the services of a local plumber.

40

2016 is a great time for Ed to sign on with new business partners, make legal agreements or move into a new home. His ability to get all the details lined up and to everyone’s liking has never been greater! Sometimes the best way to get out of a tough situation on the family front is just to work through it. It's not fun to have difficult conversations with your loved ones, but clearing the air will make everyone feel better.

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23 You are going to be a little too critical for your own good, making it difficult for you to get along with colleagues and neighbours. It's the ideal time to look at boosting your health by getting adequate rest, doing some exercise and making healthy food choices.

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21 Uranus is putting you at an impasse regarding a conflict with your partner. Neither of you wants to budge, but you don't want to fight anymore, either. It may be time to give in and make peace. Work or business is a big focus for you this month.

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19 Happy Birthday Aquarius! This year will see you climbing the ladder of success! Your sense of humour sees your popularity soar at work, home and on the social front, while you have the courage and determination to sort out any unresolved issues.

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 Neptune gives you a boost of confidence this month. It's time to break old habits and take up new ventures. The travel bug is likely to bite so take a look through a few brochures or search online for destinations that inspire you and to find special offers.
