This week... From the editor The recent announcement by the state government of plans to privatise the transport network in Newcastle has, predictably, launched a heated debate. Personally, I’m prepared to adopt a wait-and-see attitude. On the one hand, I can see merit in the idea of consolidating the buses, trains, ferries and light rail under the one operator and having timetables coordinated to make it all run smoothly, but I can also understand the Opposition questioning why we are only hearing about this plan now after years of discussion. Meanwhile, it’s all about stripes this week on our cover and in our Look section. While you may think stripes are a fairly basic part of fashion, there is almost no limit to the different styles you can create. Also, check out our My Favourite Things interview (page 43) in which we feature The Business Centre’s general manager, Narelle McClelland. I was exhausted just hearing about the amazing achievements Narelle has packed into her life, both in and out of the business world. And finally, be sure to head to our Taste section to find out exactly what water kefir is and how it can help with your everyday health. - Paul Monforte

Hunter Research Foundation economist Anthea Bill.

Mixed news from latest Hunter Economic Indicators rise in the number of people employed in the region has been tempered by falling consumer confidence, according to quarterly figures released by the Hunter Research Foundation (HRF). HRF economist and author of the Hunter Economic Indicators,

4

Anthea Bill said that, on balance, local households’ expectations regarding their personal finances remained positive in the September HUNTERPulse survey. “However, the share of households who expect their financial circumstances to deteriorate had risen,” Ms Bill said.

“Short-term and long-term measures of consumer confidence also fell in the last quarter.” The local unemployment rate was found to have continued to fall from a 15-year high of 10.3 per cent in March this year to 7.1 per cent at the end of September. There was a reduction in the number of young people (15-24 year olds) out of work, falling from one-in-five to almost one-in-seven. The report suggested this may reflect some young people giving up searching for work, along with seasonal factors. Ms Bill indicated the improving employment figures showed a rebalancing of the Hunter economy from mining to nonmining industries and suggested a continuation of the trend could see the region return to the 6 to 6.5 per cent unemployment rates achieved during the pre-mining boom period

of the mid-2000s. While the local housing market remained strong, there were signs that the pace of growth was slowing. As in the previous quarter, price outcomes were better in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie than in the rest of the Hunter. Business expectations improved, however firms’ hiring intentions softened. Since June, there was a slight fall in the number of businesses citing lack of sales as their major impediment. Dwelling approvals for the Hunter as a whole have steadied, after showing some signs of recovery in the previous quarter, from the downturn since early 2014. Over the year to August 2015, 3409 dwellings were approved to be built, a 12 per cent decrease on the year to August 2014. - Paul Monforte

Better local councils. Better local services. Better local infrastructure.

Stronger Councils. Stronger Communities. New South Wales has a complex system of 152 local councils that was put in place over 100 years ago. The system is broken. After four years of extensive consultation, it’s time to create a network of modern councils that are fit for the 21st century. These new, more effective councils will be able to deliver the improved services and infrastructure that your local community needs and deserves.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance visited Newcastle last week to make a worldwide call for expressions of interest in having a single operator plan and run the proposed light rail service along with buses, ferries and interchanges. “Patronage on public transport in Newcastle has dropped and customers tell us service levels are not up to scratch,” Mr Constance said. “It’s clear the current approach to transport in Newcastle isn’t working so it’s time to think outside the box.” The announcement drew a

rapid response from NSW Labor through Shadow Minister for the Hunter, Jodie Harrison. “This is an ambush announcement for the people of Newcastle,” Ms Harrison said. “The Government made no mention of its deceitful privatisation plans during the election.” However, peak industry group, Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) backed the Government’s plans. “Multi-modal contracting is the future of public transport in smart, growing medium-sized cities,” TTF chief executive Margy Osmond said. “An integrated, multi-modal view of the network improves customer service by focusing on the door-to-door customer experience.” - Paul Monforte

Not-for-profit community groups in Lake Macquarie City are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $1000 to fund activities during National Youth Week, 8-17 April 2016. Council’s Manager Community Planning, John Ferguson said National Youth Week was about celebrating young people and the contribution they make to the local community. “Events and activities that achieve outcomes identified in the Lake Macquarie Youth Strategy, such as increasing access to and supporting services for young people and ensuring young people have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to public life, will also be considered for funding,” Mr Ferguson said. Application forms are available to download at lakemac.com.au/community/young-people/national-youth-week. Applications close at 5pm on Friday 18 December.

Disappointment for the Newcastle Jets as the Western Sydney Wanderers celebrate a goal. Photo: Getty Images

Local derby to reignite disappointed Jets he Newcastle Jets will have the chance to take out their frustration and disappointment from the loss to the Western Sydney Wanderers when they take on fierce rivals the Central Coast Mariners at Hunter Stadium on Saturday.

The Jets fought hard to hold a 1-0 lead with ten minutes remaining but a contentious penalty and a late winner from Wanderers striker Mitch Nichols left the home side shattered. The penalty was awarded in the

80th minute after Newcastle’s Milos Trifunovic was ruled to have made contact with Brendon Santalab. Western Sydney’s Spanish import Andreu converted from the spot. Jets coach Scott Miller felt the penalty was harsh and admitted to some initial confusion over the ruling. “I actually thought, at the time, the referee was calling for simulation and we were getting the free-kick,” Miller said. “To turn around and actually look at my bench and to then be gob-smacked with the decision going the other way, was disbelief.” Wanderers coach Tony Popovic felt the penalty was justified and praised his side for their strong finish. “I thought we controlled large parts of the game,” Popovic said. “It was a good, tough match.

That’s what we expected.” The win maintained a strong record for the Wanderers at Hunter Stadium, with the visitors having never lost at the ground. Saturday’s match against the Jets kicks-off at 5.15pm. The Mariners have had a slow start to the season with only one win and a draw to show from their first five matches, but they often save their best for their closest neighbours. A-League ladder after five rounds: Sydney FC 11pts (+4 goal difference), Brisbane Roar 10pts (+5), Newcastle Jets 9pts (+1), Melbourne Victory 7pts (+3), Melbourne City 7pts (+2), Western Sydney Wanderers 7pts (-1), Wellington Phoenix 7pts (-2), Central Coast Mariners 4pts (-4), Perth Glory 3pts (-1), Adelaide United 2pts (-7). - Paul Monforte

Riders and skaters to show their wares at Kurri Kurri Some of the best local talent in the region will be carving up at Kurri Kurri Skate Park from midday on Saturday 28 November as part of the next round of NSW events in the National Skate Park League. The Kurri Kurri Skate Park, located adjacent to the Aquatic Centre in Margaret Johns Park, will be part of a series of amateur events being held at skate parks across Australia. Registrations open from midday for BMX riders and 2.30pm for skateboarders to compete to be champion of their region. The winners of the amateur events will progress to the NSW State finals to be held in Swansea in January 2016 where they’ll compete for a spot in the National Skate Park League finals in Melbourne. Cessnock Youth Centre and 8

Outreach Service Coordinator Will Doran said the Skate Park League offers all skaters and riders with the chance to test their skills at the highest level. “Skate leagues have been making headlines in the US for quite a few years and now we’re able to bring the same excitement, opportunities for skaters, BMX and scooter riders to develop their talents right here in the area,” Mr Doran said. Those who aren’t skaters or riders are encouraged to come watch the action and join in the community fun. Cessnock City Council is proud to partner with YMCA NSW to deliver the NSW Skate Park League. ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

You Am I will bring album number ten to Newcastle this weekend.

YOU AM I STILL SOUND AS EVER Hot Sauce dropping last week, there’s still more than enough life left in this band yet. “It’s definitely all systems go with us at the moment, with the tour kicking off and the album out, but honestly we haven’t really had much of a chance to step back and reflect on it all yet because it was such a quick turnaround,” guitarist Davey Lane told Newcastle Weekly. Recorded in Daptone Studios in New York, Porridge and Hot Sauce is literally chock-a-block full of analogue-soaked, punchy rock and roll swagger – proving, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that this is one band never content to rest on any revisionist laurels and Lane said that it was possibly the quickest turnaround on a You Am I record, to date. “In the space of around three weeks we had picked out all of the songs and we spent around two days in rehearsal and we didn’t go through the process of recording endless demos. I guess we left a lot to spontaneity for this record and it really kept us on our toes.” One of the factors that helped foster this ‘by-the-seat-of-thepants’ approach, Lane said, was the fact that the band played a few sneaky London shows

with US kings of ‘winging it’ The Replacements. “Yeah, seeing the way those guys play on stage, is a real inspiration,” Lane said. “We’re all massive fans of the band and I can tell you that there were a few tears of joy shed when they walked out. “We only had about three weeks notice before the shows and had to basically move mountains to make it happen, but they are one band you’d definitely do that for.” While over the course of their ten-album career, records like Hi Fi Way, Sound as Ever and Number 4 Record have become part of the Oz rock and roll canon, it is in the live arena where You Am I really soar – even on an off night these guys are still one of the most formidable acts in the country. Lane added that this modicum of spontaneity in the studio would only fuel the live show. “Yeah the songs have only been kicking around for a couple of months and there’s some there that we’ve only played around six or seven times from start to finish so they’re almost as fresh for us as they will be for you guys.” You Am I - Cambridge Hotel – Saturday 14 November. anadian singer-songwriterguitarist Charlie A’Court is the proverbial force to be reckoned with. Planted at the crossroads of roots and soul, his mighty voice and fearless guitar work have earned him an international following and a host of awards and accolades for his five solo albums to date, including his latest offering, Come On Over, winner of the 2015 East Coast Music Award for blues recording of the year. The album title track and lead single is a co-write with Australian musician-producer, Mark Lizotte. In fact, Lizotte was in the producer’s seat for the whole record. The pair first met when both A’Court and Lizotte (a.k.a. Diesel), were invited to showcase at Canada’s East Coast Music Association Conference in 2013. They quickly acknowledged their shared influences and stylistic similarities, and their musical partnership was further enhanced when A’Court was invited to tour as support on a series of Diesel

Big men get social Having only been a going concern since 2013, eclectic Townsvillebased five piece King Social have certainly been gaining some serious traction, recently snagging four nominations at the 2015 Queensland Music Awards. Hot on the heels of two wellreceived EPs – 2013’s It Goes Around and 2014s Big Man - King Social has amassed a cult following in its home stomping ground of Townsville. Their live shows have been described as “electrifying” and “completely addictive”. From the first song they win you over

t was by chance that Felicity stumbled upon water kefir - a fizzy, yet non-artificially carbonated, naturally-fermented drink that helps balance digestion, detoxify and boost immunity – and after much late night trial and error in her home kitchen, Imbibe Living Water Kefir was born. Felicity’s first encounter with water kefir came while convalescing in Guatemala during a backpacking trip. “I was in this beautiful lakeside village where the Mayan locals were brewing this elixir that I was assured would make me feel better, which it did almost instantly – I was amazed, but when I came back to Australia, I couldn’t find this thing anywhere so I basically forgot about it.” Fast-forward six years and a run of illnesses including a debilitating bout of mastitis after the birth of her second child that saw her have to endure months of antibiotics as well as a reduction in her “zest for life”. “I basically just got fed up with having no energy so I started doing some research and discovered that 80 per cent of our immunity comes from the gut and next thing I stumbled across water kefir and as soon as I tried it I knew it was the same thing I was given in Guatemala so I got to work in my kitchen.” After perfecting the fermentation, Felicity delved deeper into the alchemical process by adding a range of certified

organic herbs to the water kefir, such as sencha, wild hibiscus, rooibos, turmeric and lemongrass – to increase Imbibe’s healthgiving properties. “It really is alchemy - there is a lot of trial and error and it really can be a complex process, but the end result is scientifically proven to contain literally billions of probiotics per bottle and it’s also low in sugar. While Imbibe is definitely not a magic bullet solution, it’s a great tool to have.” After initially giving Imbibe to her family and friends, Felicity quickly realised that demand was growing at a fantastic rate. “I’d give it to my friends and before too long I was getting knocks at my door demanding more and more Imbibe,” she said. “Next thing a local stockist asked me for eight bottles and I was just amazed – I thought ‘wow, if I can sell these eight bottles, I’m doing okay,’ but they actually sold out within a day and demand has been growing ever since.” With Imbibe now available in more than 60 locations along the East Coast, there’s little denying that Felicity is on the right track with Imbibe. “I’m just so happy that I am able to offer people the same benefits that I experienced with water kefir - it really turned my life around.” For more on the Imbibe story, or to find out where you can pick some up locally, visit imbibewaterkefir.com.au - Stephen Bisset

PICK OF THE WEEK No Country For Old Men Saturday, SBS, 8.30pm, AV15+ (2007) Javier Bardem (pictured) is stone-cold brilliant as the relentless killer who leaves no witnesses to his bloody pursuit of down-to-earth Texan cowboy Josh Brolin and the stash of stolen cash he found out in the desert. Also on the hunt for the dough is hired gun Woody Harrelson, whose mouth is as big as his Stetson, while Tommy Lee Jones is the world-weary sheriff left to pick up the pieces. A clever meditation on morality, this cracking yarn is also a supremely violent and unpredictable cat-and-mouse caper.

Friday, NBN, 8.30pm, M (2012) If a young adult novel is a hit, you can rest assured it’ll be transferred to the big screen in no time. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games is Ccertainly no fluffy piece, and director and co-writer Gary Ross does a magnificent job of bringing the futuristic world of Panem to life. To fight for survival in a ravaged world, teenagers are forced to battle to the death live on television. But when 16-year-old Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence, right) young sister is chosen to fight, she steps up in her place with dangerous consequences. Gripping and gruesome.

Sunday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2012) Fifty years and 22 films precede Skyfall, which, on its release, was lauded as the best James Bond film ever. This is James Bond reinvented and Daniel Craig (pictured) gives such a stellar performance. After a botched mission where 007 is presumed shot at M’s (Judi Dench) misguided order, she is pressured by new boss Mallory (Ralph Fiennes) to retire. With a brilliant baddie in Javier Bardem and breathtaking stunts Skyfall will win over even the most staunch Bond critics.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

You will reach out and make changes that set the pattern of your life for years to come. If you’ve been experimenting with relationships during the past couple of years, there will be some major endings and beginnings which might include setting up a home or dismantling one.

The Sun is in your fifth house of creativity, therefore you will embark upon projects which are close to your heart. You should develop ideas and the determination to make something of yourself and to create something on a business level that will stand the test of time.

This is a time of consolidation and of steady and controlled growth. Material matters move to the top of your priority list and your attention will be firmly focused on your income and financial base. Now is a good time to buy a property, especially with a garden.

You will make achievements as part of a group or team and there will be involvement with groups of one kind or another, e.g. political, workrelated or after-hours activities with a sports team, an arts community or online group. At work you will have to cooperate in order to succeed.

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19

You will experiment with new people, methods and ideas which will lead to some kind of change and renewal of your partnership situation. In your career, as in relationships, there will be interesting new beginnings and new situations to handle with dynamic and inspiring people.

Your home circumstances are playing a major part this month which may include a move of house, building work to be done, decorating or buying new furniture and fittings. The definite domestic slant to this month’s planets will temporarily anchor you firmly to your home and family.

You will feel more passionate in every way and even the most placid amongst you will become enthusiastic about everyone and everything. Your energy levels are going to be high and you are ready to take advantage of the new opportunities which will present themselves.

This will be a time of hard work but also ultimate achievement. You’ll receive a great deal of useful help from others at work, some of whom may be in positions of seniority or be equipped with specialised knowledge they are willing to share with you.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20

Work will be important to you and you could find that either your normal job becomes more interesting or that you will begin to do something new and highly satisfying. You will have to cope with paperwork and record keeping while technology will become an important feature of your life.

This is an energetic time for you. You could look into taking courses at your local college or evening classes connected with language, communications or computer studies. You might need to give more attention to your children’s education or to their extra-curricular hobbies and interests.

This is a time of retreat from the hurly-burly of life. Until 23 November, you may have to suppress your feelings, there could be work projects carried on in secret, some kind of secret relationship going on or you’re in contact with the black sheep of the family.

You might plan an overseas trip, take the time to explore a part of the world you’ve always fancied knowing better, or your work could involve you in overseas goods, customers, services or property. Your family may move overseas or people from abroad could join your family.

Barnardos Australia urgently needs shortterm foster carers for local children in need. We provide support, training and a generous tax free allowance of $1050 per fortnight. Call us today.

Turning Japanese: 50 Years of Japanese Motoring in Oz (Rockpool Publishing, $29.99) provides a thrilling snapshot of the rich history of Japanese cars in Australia – on the road as well as on the racetrack. The first Japanese cars to reach our shores in the late 1950s and early 1960s were mostly small, crude and often the object of laughter – and sometimes even hostility - but as the designs and reliability rapidly improved, it wasn’t long before Australia was won over. The new Japanese brands just had too much style, were too well-appointed and offered irresistible value for money and, in some cases, were just too plain cheeky to ignore. From the quaintly named Nissan Cedric of the early 1960s to today’s Nissan GT-R ‘Godzilla’ sports car, Turning Japanese is a quirky look back at our four-wheeled

love affair with the Land of the Rising Sun. Featuring over 300 stunning photos, this is a must-have for car fanatics! Now available at good book stores and online at rockpoolpublishing.com.au
