thursday 14 january 2016
This week... From the editor What an incredibly creative region we have in the Hunter! I’m in awe of the talents of young Merewether artists Nicola de Jong and Mia Stamenkovski, whose HSC works will be part of this year’s travelling ARTEXPRESS exhibition, to visit Maitland in spring (See them on page 4). While Nicola’s work might be described as cosmic, Mia’s is truly haunting, as she depicts the loss of her grandfather to Alzheimer’s disease in The Long Goodbye. What a struggle hers and so many families face with this dreaded disease. Our family, too, is watching a loved one retreat, and as painful as it is for us, we can’t even imagine how frightening it is for her. Mind you, there does seem to be some jollity in the senior years, if the activities of Tinonee Gardens multicultural village, Waratah, are a guide. Read how they’ve become calendar girls (and boys) to raise funds and have a bit of a laugh on page 8. Good on CEO Sue Fardy and photographer Von Mullane for bringing Tinonee Stars 2016 to life. I’m hoping I have half the style and sass of the Hepburn-esque Maria Monferini when I get to that stage of life. Have a great week. And in memory of David Bowie: let’s dance. - Alysson Watson

The art of friendship
below: Mia Stamenkovski and Nicola de Jong. Picture: Jamie Wicks. above: Mia’s work The Long Goodbye.
ia Stamenkovski knows the haunting effect of Alzheimer ’s disease on a family; having lost a grandfather to the disease and now watching a grandmother suffer. The Merewether High student depicted that in her HSC major art work, The Long Goodbye. “It had a big impact on me and my family,” she said. Mia and her friend, Nicola de Jong, also a Merewether student, are among seven Hunter students whose work will feature in ARTEXPRESS, the travelling exhibition of the best 120 major works from the 2015 HSC Art examination. Nicola’s work, Umbra Permanent (Shadow Remains), is a cosmic work of light, circles and shadows. “My art doesn’t have a specific meaning; I like people to decide what they make of it,” she said. Both girls studied an accelerated art course last year, so still have the HSC hurdle this year. English, maths, history and science are on the agenda. They both credit creative
The calm after the storm Hot, steamy weather and thunderstorms this week have followed record rainfall last week that caused flooding across the Hunter. Record January rainfall and big seas lashed the region as an East Coast Low dumped nearly 300mm in less than 24 hours. The State Emergency Service was kept busy with nearly 1000 calls for help, including evacuations, with flash flooding, rising rivers and dams overflowing. The worst affected areas were around Raymond Terrace, where low-lying houses were flooded, Dungog and Wallsend. SES acting deputy region controller Robyn Barco said the SES responded to 975 calls in five days. “We are lucky now with the Bureau of Meteorology modelling, 4
as we had warning as early as New Year’s Day that there would be rain issues from Monday,” she said. “By Sunday night we had our incident action plan in place and our roster worked out so we could respond to the first calls on Monday night.” Ms Barco said 230 SES volunteers were in the field, with locals bolstered from the ranks of Sydney, Wollongong, Gunnedah and the Central West. “Raymond Terrace was the worst affected, but we are fortunate that the Hunter River fell half a metre short of the expected peak of 3.3 metres,” she said. “Even so, residents were telling us the water was higher than it was in April.” Hunter Water spokesman Jeremy Bath said the gates of Grahamstown
Dam were opened for the first time other than for maintenance. Grahamstown had been at 96% capacity when rain started, after falling to 76.4% a year before. It spilled more than 10 billion litres of water. Chichester Dam spilled more than 6 billion litres, after reaching a low of 45% in spring. Burwood Waste Water Treatment Works was inundated with storm water, dealing with a record 435.8 million litres of flow last Wednesday, compared to 45 million litres on a typical day. The Pasha Bulker storm in 2007 caused 361 million litres of flow a day, and in March 2013 two consecutive days caused 388 million and 361 million litres of flow. Temperatures of 40 and higher are expected this week, according to Don White, of Weatherwatch. - Alysson Watson

Mia hopes to study architecture or psychology, and Nicola primary school teaching with a focus on art. Also to have their work in ARTEXPRESS are Chloe Hopkins (Lambton High), Emma Lewis (Whitebridge High), Ilesh Porter (Maitland Grossman High), Hannah Tollis (Tomaree High) and Amara Woods (Swansea High). It will show at Maitland Regional Art Gallery from 10 September to 30 October. - Alysson Watson

Beware of scammers NSW Fair Trading has warned people to be wary of scam State Emergency Service (SES) collectors and shoddy builders in the aftermath of the floods. “The NSW SES does not collect donations either via the phone, personal visits or buckets in the street,” acting commissioner John Tansey said. “Volunteers raise funds through raffles, but these are suspended at such times. Mr Tansey also warned about scam builders during rebuilding. “Do not deal with itinerant traders for home building work after storms or at any time,” he said. “Use trusted businesses, properly licensed and with a stake in maintaining their reputation.” Licences can be checked at 13 32 20 or fairtrading.nsw.gov.au.

Virgin to increase flights into Newcastle
14.99/ea
Virgin Australia will increase the number of flights between Brisbane and Newcastle from February 21. The airline, which will add almost 20,000 extra seats per year on the route, or 21 return services, would also overnight aircraft at Newcastle Airport, with services arriving into Newcastle at 9.30pm and departing at 7am the next morning. Newcastle Airport CEO Peter Cook said the decision showed a strong commitment by Virgin to the region. “Our community now has greater choice for late-arriving and early-departing flights to and from Brisbane on a number of days each week,” he said.

Lake Macquarie residents have cut the waste they send to landfill by one-third in seven years. Council sustainability manager Alice Howe said the 4.9% annual drop was above the 2% target. Diversion of construction waste, organics and dry recyclables is responsible, and a green waste service will be followed by food waste in 2017. People who want a larger 360-litre recycling bin can swap for a fee of $25. Phone 4921 0333.
Coal trade down Newcastle’s coal exports were down 0.6% last year, reflecting a reduction in demand by China. Total port trade was down 0.3%. Coal is still our biggest export at 96.5% of total trade, with 158.1million tonnes exported to Japan (45%), Korea (20%), China (13%) and Taiwan (11%). Non-coal trade grew 9% to 5.8million tonnes, with growth in fuels, fertiliser and alumina imports, and exports of meals and grains, concentrates and steel.
Hunter Valley Zoo’s latest addition with mum, Bonita.
Bonita welcomes a baby hings have become decidedly cuter in Nulkaba with the arrival of a baby black capped capuchin monkey at Hunter Valley Zoo. The latest addition was born early last week and primate keeper Daisy Hawkins said the excitement was palpable. “It’s safe to say that there is lots of monkey business going on here at the moment,” she laughed. “She – we don’t know the sex yet, but I’m hoping for a girl – was born last Sunday and both baby and
mum, Bonita, are doing really well.” The newborn brings the capuchin population at the zoo to eight with three adult females (each with a one-year-old) and a dominant male, and Ms Hawkins said she certainly had her hands full. “These monkeys are super smart,” she said. “They are native to South America and you’ll often see them pop up in movies like Night at the Museum and The Hangover. They are extremely cute and really quite cheeky.” Ms Hawkins said the baby was
more concerned with sleeping, but mum Bonita was more than happy to show off her charge to zoo visitors. “When it starts climbing, we’ll be able to determine the sex and then have even more fun picking out a name,” she said. “But, both mum and bub are really comfortable and Bonita isn’t shy with proudly showing all the visitors the little baby on her back.” Hunter Valley Zoo is at 138 Lomas Lane, Nulkaba. 12 residents of Tinonee Gardens multicultural village at Waratah. The year starts with a sprightly Annie Oakley, then James Bond leaps into March, Babe Pig in the City ushers in May, and December
features White Christmas, with a trio of residents regaled in Santa fashion. Along the way we encounter Mary Poppins, Laurel and Hardy and an elegant Audrey Hepburnesque Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The calendar is the brainchild of executive officer Sue Fardy, who said the folk at Tinonee were very social, with activities such as music therapy, drumming, a choir, a spring ball and Christmas carols. “This Tinonee Stars initiative just adds to our repertoire, is fun for residents, families and Tinonee staff and, of course, is a good fundraising exercise,” she said. The calendar production was a team effort with costumes and props by friends of Tinonee, and pro bono photography by Von Mullane from YCM Photography. Calendars are $15 each, postage extra. Big guns for cruisers The big guns were brought out to welcome visitors to Newcastle on Wednesday, as passengers on board the cruise ship Azamara Quest were treated to a five-star dinner at Fort Scratchley. The 600 guests from 20 countries had the chance to explore the region during the day, before being wined and dined on Hunter produce in the evening to the tunes of jazz maestro James Morrison. The ship’s officers were invited to fire the Mark VII gun, the gun that returned fire on an attacking Japanese submarine in World War II, before a fireworks display from Dyke Point. Port of Newcastle CEO Geoff Crowe said the Azamara Quest was one of five maiden cruise ship visits to the harbour this season, in a program of 11 visits during summer and autumn that would bring 18,000 passengers to the port.

INGREDIENTS
all tomatoes have been added, boil, stirring occasionally, until tomatoes are soft and juicy, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat.
2.5 kg tomatoes 40 ml lemon juice 1 tsp salt
Press tomatoes through a sieve or food mill, to remove skins and seeds. Discard skins and seeds.
1 tsp dried herbs
Return mixture to saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to mediumhigh and boil until volume is reduced by at least one-third for a thin sauce.
METHOD Prepare waterbath preserving pot. Wash jars, lids and bands in hot soapy water. Heat jars in simmering water until ready to use. Do not boil. Set lids and bands aside.
AGE OF PRESERVATION
If you’re unsure where to begin, Jarden Home Brands, makers of Ball brand preserving products, and Rebecca Sullivan share their tips. Know the acidity of your food:

high acid foods (tomatoes) need a waterbath. Meat, poultry, fish and some veg need a pressure canner. Use quality jars; throw out if chipped. Wash jars, lids and bands in hot, soapy water and rinse well. Keep warm until ready for use. Leave space around rim and remove air bubbles before sealing. Store up to a year.
Add 1 Tbsp (20 ml) lemon juice to each hot jar. Add 1/2 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp dried herbs to each hot jar. Ladle hot tomato sauce into each jar, leaving 1/2 inch (13 mm) headspace. Remove air bubbles and adjust headspace, if necessary, by adding sauce. Wipe rims. Centre lids on jars. Apply bands and adjust to fingertip tight.
Wash tomatoes. Quarter 6 tomatoes and place in large saucepan. Bring to a boil. Using a potato masher, crush tomatoes to release juices, stirring. While maintaining a boil and stirring to prevent burning, quarter additional tomatoes, adding them to the saucepan as you work. Make sure the mixture continues to boil vigorously while you add, stir and crush the remaining tomatoes. When

BUTLER FINDS BALANCE ince the last time Newcastle saw roots powerhouse the John Butler Trio, as part of their Flesh and Blood album tour in April last year, the roadshow has barely stopped. Capitalising on the rapturous reception Flesh and Blood received, both here and overseas, Butler and co have basically spent the ensuing time on the road here, in the US and Europe playing such massive festivals as Lolapalooza, Bonnaroo, Rock En Seine and Fuji Rock. “It has been pretty busy over the last 12 months, since the album [Flesh and Blood] came out but it’s a good problem to have,” Butler told Newcastle Weekly. “But now, I’m enjoying a little down time before this next tour starts – I’m actually talking to you in my backyard, playing with my dog.” Certainly no stranger to the rigours of the road, the ARIA award winner, who is also a husband and a father, said the secret to maintaining road sanity was to keep mind and
body healthy and striking a balance between the road and family life. “When you’re playing 120 cities a year it can be difficult to stay sane, I guess,” he said. “I find it’s important to keep busy, both mentally and physically, so I like to skate and meditate while on the road. “In terms of balance, though, I think the whole work/life thing is something that anyone with kids struggles with, not just musicians – thankfully, though I’m in a position now where I can bring my wife and kids with me on tour, which is just great.” The impending tour, with support from Melbourne brother-sister outfit Tinpan Orange, will place Butler on the Civic Theatre stage next month and will be the last opportunity to catch them live before they hunker down into the studio to start work on album number seven. “I have always looked forward to coming to Newcastle and this time is certainly no

Considered to be an early pioneer of rockabilly in this country, Lee’s first hit came in the form of Ain’t It So, which he co-wrote with the great Johnny O’Keefe, and he quickly became a regular face on such television shows as Six O’Clock Rock and Bandstand. PICK OF THE WEEK Grease Sunday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, PG (1978) John Travolta was the perfect choice for the role of greaser Danny Zuko in the cinematic adaptation of Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey’s stage musical. Danny indulges in some “summer lovin’” with Sandy (Olivia Newton-John), but when the two find themselves classmates after summer, Sandy is not cool enough for our Danny and his group of cronies. Full of song, dance, car races and, of course, a moral message, this classic musical can be watched over and over again.
Friday
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
Rush Wednesday, TEN, 8.30pm, M (2013) Aussie hunk Chris Hemsworth (left) stars as legendary British Formula One driver James Hunt, who was almost as famous for his playboy antics off the track as he was for his astonishing talent on it as he dominated the sport in the ’70s. Daniel Brühl ( Inglourious Basterds ) is excellent as Hunt’s no-nonsense Austrian rival Nikki Lauder. The on-track scenes are spectacular, but Rush has enough depth to appeal to more than just petrol heads.
Saturday, PRIME7, 7pm, G (2004) In the original Diaries, San Francisco teenager Mia (Anne Hathaway, right) was transformed from a geeky duckling into a swan after she found out she was heir to the European throne of Genovia. Now living in the kingdom (which is like a theme park), she finds out that she must choose a husband within 30 days or forfeit her right to be queen. Julie Andrews returns as the Genovian queen who helps Princess Mia choose the right man. Girls should lap up this wish-fulfilment fantasy, which is carried along by Hathaway’s comic timing.

RUBBISH REMOVALS
RUBBISH REMOVAL
It’s the time of year for the chuck-out, and this book is the place to start. There are four kinds of clutter found in every home, according to author Adele Blair: emotional, just-in-case, fad, and bargain clutter. Her new book Home will help you work out which kind of clutterer you are, and what you might do about it. Blair’s lifelong passion for planning and problem solving are evident in the many tips
and tricks to create storage (and retrieval) systems that will work for you. Your pantry will be the envy of your neighbours and wait till you see how to organise make-up! She even offers advice on sorting out the rubbish tip that is the family car. Home is published by New Holland, RRP $35.

PEPPER I know Pepper is not, technically, a “thing” but she is an important part of our family. Pepper is the nicest dog I’ve ever met. Seriously. She’s always cheerful and ready to play and is extremely excited every time we return home – even if we’ve just popped out for 10 minutes. She even has her own hashtag on Instagram! #misspepperpuppy
BLACKBIRD CORNER
My favourite things
‘We are heading toward our shop’s 10th birthday, and we still love it. We only stock items that we personally make, want or admire. We live right next door so can be found in there at any time of the day or night! Our friends think I’m slightly obsessed, I think, but we are so lucky to be able to follow our passions and I will never stop being grateful for that.’
DARBY STREET
(IN PARTICULAR THE HEADPHONE PROJECT) ‘I lived in Cooks Hill in my teen years/early 20s, and my mother Lynda is a part-owner of Cooks Hill Books, which has been on Darby Street for over 30 years. Darby Street is home – it’s surrounding tree-lined streets; the lovely independently owned shops and cafes; the relaxed atmosphere.’
THE CENTENARY CENTRE
Nici Palmer OWNER BLACKBIRD CORNER, DARBY STREET
This little store on the corner of Darby Street, Cooks Hill, that is adorned with unique knick-knacks and handmade charm is a must see in Newcastle. The owner – the wonderfully passionate Nici Palmer, who is a Novocastrian through and through – created the space with her husband, Sean, in 2006 after returning to her home town following a six-year stint in Melbourne. As soon as you step in the eclectic Blackbird Corner, you can get a sense of the vibe and passion. Nici is all about stocking handmade, and Australian-made. This year, they will celebrate their 10th birthday. - Kayla Stephenson
‘If I ever leave my “bubble” that is Darby Street, my very favourite place in Newcastle is Centenary antiques, which is a huge warehouse full of amazing old wares. You can find anything in there if you have the time and look hard enough. I never, ever leave there empty handed. I’m quite devastated that they are closing after 23 years there.’
ANGELIQUE HOUTKAMP’S ART ‘Angelique is actually a tattoo artist in Amsterdam who also occasionally releases limited edition art prints. I have been collecting her prints for years now and would love to add to my little collection.’
