This week...
Editing the Weekly has made me realise just how busy Hunter people are. Not just with jobs and friends and families, but the myriad events that are dreamed up, organised, supported and attended every day of every week. Last week I was fortunate enough to see Amy Vee transform into Eva Peron on the stage of the Civic Theatre in the National Theatre Company production Evita. What a soaring performance! I felt like Julia Roberts in that Pretty Woman scene where she attends her first opera (you know, in the beautiful red velvet gown). It was not my first such performance, but I was moved to tears. How lucky are we to have performers and performances of this calibre, and in such a magnificent theatre! The night after, I went to spectacular Fort Scratchley Barracks, where, against the backdrop of a Newcastle Harbour sunset, naturopath and entrepreneur Tammy Guest launched her book Freedom From Fatigue. Then on Sunday, Raid My Wardrobe (headed up by the indefatigable Rachel Prest) enticed Hunter women to donate 300kg of clothes and personal care items for others in need. They’ll be distributed through the Sista Code's charity arm, Got Your Back Sista, headed by the equally indefatigable Melissa Histon. Good job, sisters! - Alysson Watson

Annette Cain, Lifeline telephone crisis support team manager.
Extending a lifeline nnette Cain is in the front line of suicide prevention in the Hunter. As manager of Lifeline’s telephone crisis support team of 75 volunteers, she deals daily with what is now acknowledged as a national emergency – that suicide is the leading cause of premature death in Australia, reaching a 10-
year high of 2864 deaths in 2014, more than twice the road toll. Annette believes Lifeline saves 5,000 lives in the Hunter a year, through crisis telephone support, face-to-face counselling and other suicide prevention training and services. “We’re at the pointy end,” Annette said. “We go where others
Bright spots in Hunter economy Business and consumer confidence in the economy, in the short and long term, rose in the December quarter, providing some bright spots in the Hunter’s economic outlook, according to the Hunter Research Foundation’s latest economic indicators. CEO Brent Jenkins said business expectations had risen significantly above lows of 12 months earlier, including in relation to sales and hiring intentions. “Businesses need to invest to improve our medium to long term economic outlook and the latest data … indicate greater willingness by Hunter firms to invest,” Dr Jenkins said. “However, Hunter businesses are starting from a low base. Although the share of businesses citing lack of sales as a major impediment has moderated since 4
June 2015, it remains above preGFC levels. “Resilience in business confidence and conditions will be needed over the coming months if the non-mining recovery is to remain on track.” There are also positive trends in the Hunter labour market, with growing employment, and falls in the unemployment rate (from a 15year high of 10.3% last March down to 6.9% at the end of January). Rising employment and falling unemployment reflect the continued rebalancing of the Hunter economy from mining to non-mining industries, Dr Jenkins said. This indicated the state was Hunter was starting to catch up with sustained growth in NSW as a whole. The rate of house price growth in the region has moderated since mid-2015.
don’t want to go. We meet people at their pain. “Lifeline believes when crisis support is available, most suicides are preventable.” Lifeline counsellors in the Hunter come from all walks of life, and range in age from 18 to mid70s. Says Annette: “They include professionals – teachers, police, lawyers – retired people, mums and dads, the unemployed and students of psychology and social work.” Volunteers undergo 11 weeks of training, four months of supervised counselling, and nine months of probation during which they are further supervised and undergo professional development. Once qualified and working, they debrief before and after each shift, must report calls such as those dealing with suicide to supervisors, and have access to counselling. “Some people say we are a ‘Ma and Pa Kettle service’, but that is certainly not the case,” Annette said. Having been a volunteer herself for 19 years, and still volunteering on the crisis line once
a week, Annette says the work is challenging. Why do they do it, is a question she is often asked. “People come to us to give back. They may have had a crisis themselves and feel they can help others,” she said. “Or they may be seeking a grounding for professional work, such as psychology or social work. “It is an amazing experience to be with another human being in their pain, to know you made a difference. “We do save lives every day.” The most important skill for counsellors is empathy. “You have to have unconditional positive regard for people. You are there to give them respect, to meet them at their pain, not to be a fixer or a rescuer,” she said. “But we sometimes save our volunteers lives as well. “We help them, their families and their communities. They take the skills they learn with us – the listening and communication – and put them to use. There is a pay-off.” Lifeline crisis support: 13 11 14
“The Chief” delivers
Pool safety deadline
He may have placed second in the reality TV show I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! but Paul “The Chief” Harragon’s charity has still come out a winner. First placed Brendan Fevola, a former AFL player, said he would split his $100,000 prize money, giving half to The Chief’s chosen charity, the Mark Hughes Foundation. And Hunter builder McDonald Jones Homes has matched the gift, announcing this week it would donate $50,000 to the charity. McDonald Jones founder and director Bill McDonald said he was inspired by the mateship of Paul Harragon and his commitment to help raise money, and hoped to donate another $50,000 to the charity later this year. The Mark Hughes Foundation was set up by Hughes in 2013.
People selling or renting out properties with swimming pools will need a certificate of compliance for pool safety from April 29 under new state government regulations. Vendors will need to attach a certificate of compliance, or a certificate of non-compliance with what needs to be fixed, to their contract of sale. Buyers of homes with pools that don’t comply will have 90 days to rectify noncompliant swimming pool barriers. Landlords must ensure any residential tenancy agreement includes a certificate of compliance, or a relevant occupation certificate. Minister for Local Government Paul Toole said the regulations would make pools safer. Council officers can carry out pool inspections. For information visit swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au

espite being thrown and crushed by her daughter’s pony a month ago, Melissa Jenkins, of Allworth, counts her lucky stars. “I’m lucky that I decided to go for a ride before Sienna got on, because if he had reared up and rolled on her, he would have crushed her tiny frame,” Melissa said. “I’m also lucky we have the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. The crew are amazing and I am so grateful.” With suspected spinal injuries, Melissa was braced and airlifted from her property at Raymond Terrace to the John Hunter Hospital. She was cleared of major injuries, but sustained internal bruising to her neck and back, that is still causing her pain. In a letter to the rescue service, Melissa wrote how wonderful the crew were, especially in regard to comforting her children, Sienna, now 7, and Levi 4. She also wrote how glad she was her husband Aaron contributed to the service from his pay: “It’s such a small thing, but you never know when you will need them,” she said.
Melissa and her family have agreed to be ambassadors for the Hunter Westpac Rescue Helicopter’s Superhero Stride, at Newcastle Foreshore on 22 May. Participants are invited to dress as superheroes for the 3km walk along the foreshore to Nobbys, where there will be fun, food and entertainment. “Sienna and Levi will be Wonder Woman and Superman, but I’m not sure what superheroes Aaron and I will be yet,” Melissa laughed. On a serious note, she said the family would not keep her daughter’s pony Cody, but she would still ride her 20-year-old horse Merlin. While Levi is more interested in motorbikes, Sienna still has an interest in horse riding, but will concentrate on dancing until she is a bit older and stronger, Melissa said. Registration for the Superhero Stride is $15, $10 for under-16s, $50 for teams of five, and prizes will be awarded for costumes and fundraising. Teacher Carrie Jacobi, with Warners Bay Public School students Sienna Thomson, Sebastian Smee, Michael Tibbs and Jessi Bigh.
Goodbye, lovely locks hen Carrie Jacobi’s mother Leslie was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013, she vowed to shave her head if her mum went bald during chemotherapy treatment.
“She did lose a bit of hair, but she didn’t go bald thanks to the new cold cap treatment,” Carrie, 55, a year 4 teacher at Warners Bay, said. “So I kept my hair.” In fact, her mother’s side effects
were minimal, and despite being very unwell at diagnosis and being given a 5% chance of living six months, Leslie enjoyed 21 months more of life before passing away last May at age 77. “She was strong, fit and healthy, and took lots of alternative treatments,” Carrie said. “But it was that first dose of chemo that gave us all that extra time together, during which we did lots of things, including going to the Alice Springs Beanie Festival.” Losing both her mother and long-time friend Margaret Henry to pancreatic cancer gave Carrie the idea to shave off her hair to raise money for cancer research. She was convinced to proceed when the federal government stopped Medicare funding for endoscopies, procedures used to detect and research cancer. “I’m part of a study involving
regular endoscopies at the Garvan Institute, looking at genetic links and early detection of pancreatic cancer, because at the moment, it is usually not detected till it is fourth stage, and you have a 2% chance of surviving 12 months,” Carrie said. Despite being offered money not to shave off her beautiful long curls, from her father and daughter, Carrie will succumb to a number two shave during her school’s minifete on April 8. The mother of two and grandmother of two, who lives at Tighes Hill, hopes to raise $3000 for the Garvan Institute through mycause.com.au and will donate her hair to be made into wigs for cancer patients. Research at Garvan is focused on understanding the role of genes and molecular and cellular processes in health and disease. - Alysson Watson

Refugee once again leaves his home and family erome Rugaruza’s warm laugh tumbles from deep within and I’m aware of the irony that hearing his laugh gives me great comfort. How could I possibly envy a man who escaped the Rwandan massacre of 1994? I’ve been fortunate to interview Jerome several times and even more fortunate to sit and talk and laugh over coffee with this indefatigable man who offers so much yet asks for so little. But I despaired recently when I heard that he’d moved away from his family yet again to try to find work. Jerome has been working on a property in Mingoola, somewhere up the other end of the New England Highway, after spending a season or two picking fruit in the Riverina. Why? Well, seems no one in Newcastle wants to employ this
university-educated, multi-lingual man with a huge desire to help others. Graduating from the University of Newcastle in October 2014 after studying sociology and anthropology, Jerome worked in a chicken processing plant for three weeks. “But I wasn’t offered any more shifts after that, so I’ve had to rely on Centrelink to care for my family,” he said. Jerome left his home in the Democratic Republic of Congo on October 28, 1994, after the Rwandan genocide and growing conflict on the border of Rwanda and Burundi led to the governor of his province warning they had just seven days to leave. “I actually fled before the announcement but my father hadn’t heard it and was murdered at his farm,” he said.
Nearly 22 years after fleeing his home, Jerome is still struggling to find meaningful work. “Someone in Newcastle once told me it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” he said. “I now know just how accurate that is. There’s also a bit of stigma about English not being your first language so there’s an assumption that a native English speaker will do a better job. If you haven’t had work, you have no referees.” The closest I’ve ever heard Jerome come to sounding bitter is when he quips: “Maybe the UNHCR would provide a reference as I lived in refugee camps in Nairobi and Rwanda for 15 years.” I can’t believe this wonderful man has to leave Newcastle to care for his family and his community. I feel ashamed, yet far from being diminished by his experience,

Jerome’s dream gets bigger. “I don’t want a job just for myself. I want to find jobs for hundreds of thousands of refugees and low-skilled Australians. If the [Tenterfield] council assist me with a land purchase, my dream would be to see people living and working there, building their own homes. Setting free low-income people from the bondage of mortgage.” Ever the optimist, my friend leaves me with this thought. “I’d like to be a dairy farmer. I know about cows so I can milk the cows while I discuss sociological and anthropological issues with them,” he laughs. “They’re a bit smarter than chickens. carol@newcastleweekly.com.au

from the 50s
ASU is as much about encouraging a healthy and active social life as it is teaching students how to dance. Dance lessons are a great way to get fit and meet new friends. The studio has regular social gatherings on and off the dance floor. Whether you want to learn to dance for: fun; fitness; social aspects; medals; or competitions; ASU can cater for your needs. The principal, Gary Haigh, is an associate
level three instructor with the Australian Rock ‘n’ Roll Dancesports Council (ARRDC). He is accredited with, and a financial member of, the ARRDC. ASU is certified to work in a child-related environment and as such can provide excellent tuition for children. The teaching assistants are friendly and approachable with a great deal of practical dance experience.
Gift certificates are also available. The studio has a thriving classic car club, All Shook Up Car Club Inc. (ASUCC), with over 70 vintage and classic cars registered. The car club has regular outings, both dance and non-dance related throughout the Hunter Valley, other parts of NSW and interstate. Car club members often travel overseas to participate in international classic car and dance events.

An established pin-up photographer, she has become as well known for her research and writing in bullying education and awareness, largely through Adore Pin Up magazine. “There’s a fine line between being mean and bullying, and, after personal experience of 14 months of workplace bullying, I know that such an experience can really change you,” Pearl said. “It hasn’t defined me, but it is really important to me that people understand what bullying is, and that we support each other, especially children, through such experiences.”
She hopes eventually to write children’s books, but is still in the research phase, setting off next month to work with American organisations The Kindness Campaign and The Bullying Project. She’ll also continue on the retro festival circuit, beginning with the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Festival in April. This weekend, she’ll be at the Kurri Nostalgia Festival, of which she is a sponsor, and Burlesque Idol at Lizotte’s Lambton. And, although she loves the retro look, Pearl uses stylists to create the pin-ups she photographs. “I don’t dress that way myself, I’m a big dork really, more of a hippy.” And she’s happiest behind the camera. Knights had no answer for Burgess steamroller wouldn’t like to tackle Sam Burgess. Imagine 116kg of bone and muscle thundering towards you. Nor would I like to run at him. But if I had been trained to do it, and was getting paid to do it, and my teammates and fans needed me to do it, I would give it my absolute best shot. Personal and professional pride would demand no less. Yet I sensed as I watched South Sydney steamroll the Knights 48-6 on Saturday that there was not a lot of enthusiasm for the task among some of the Knights. Experienced forward Robbie Rochow confirmed as much in an interview on Monday after coach Nathan Brown had put the side through a video review of the match. “There’s some defensive principles that we didn’t live by on
the weekend, and we had to front that this morning … you can see where you should have worked harder, or where you should have got your body in front,” Rochow said. Ergo some Knights – and Rochow is big enough to declare himself one – weren’t always prepared to put their bodies on the line against the Bunnies. The good news is, it can be fixed. “A lot of it’s effort and a bit of will and determination to get your body in front … we’ve got to show a bit more fight and determination to turn it around,’’ Rochow said. Fancy that. The young players Brown has put his faith in have aimed up well. But it’s hard to fathom that senior players are having to remind themselves that it takes things like effort, will, determination and fight
to win games. • Leonardo continues to state his case for retention at the Jets with another impressive performance in the 1-0 home loss to the Wanderers on Sunday. The veteran Brazilian playmaker was a risky proposition given his 12-month absence from the game when the Jets picked him up, but his influence has grown with his fitness to the point where he has been like a new signing in the latter part of the season. On the other side of the coin, Milos Trifunovic’s stocks have fallen. The Serbian striker spurned a couple of good chances against the Wanderers, as he did the previous week against Perth, and those misses, with Newcastle’s play-off hopes on the line, suggest his poacher’s instinct has dulled. Similarly, you would have to

Fiji appeal at home game The Newcastle Knights will pass the bucket around for people in cyclone-devastated Fiji at their first home game. The support of Unicef’s work in Fiji following Cyclone Winston is something the Knights are passionate about, given the strong contingent of players with Fijian heritage. “It’s devastating what happened in Fiji and I think 14
everyone has to step in and do what they can to help build Fiji back up,” Akuila Uate, who has family living in Fiji, said. Knights partner health fund nib kicked off the fundraising with a $10,000 donation, and will accept cash donations through its network until 30 March. The Knights play the Canberra Raiders on Saturday 19 March at Hunter Stadium. Kick off is 5pm.

EDUCATION UPDATE HUNTER CHRISTIAN SPECIAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Hunter Christian Special Religious Education Committee believes the teaching of scripture can benefit children in numerous ways, from encouraging spiritual wellbeing to offering tools for sustained happiness. Here is an example of what’s on the minds of children when it comes to the importance of scripture.
Daniel, year 4 “I think scripture is good because kids learn about God, and the miracles of Jesus, and how he died on the cross. I like hearing all the stories. I think kids should go as it’s lots of fun and we sometimes do craft. Kids need to learn about God, and forgiveness and the Ten Commandments.”
Eamon, year 4 “In scripture, we learn about Jesus and the miracles he did and what he did. Kids need to go to scripture because they need to know about God so they can go to heaven and have faith in Him." For more information, visit huntersre.com.au

AUTUMN FARE
Autumn is here, and although we farewell the stone fruits and salads of summer, there is plenty to enjoy this season. Here are seven autumn foods to savour.
1 PERSIMMONS
2 PEARS
Sweet, and with the twice the fibre of apples, persimmons are best eaten when crunchy and firm. Choose fruit with semi-pliable caps and let them ripen at home in a paper bag. As a snack, cut them onto wedges and have with yoghurt and nuts.
To avoid bruising, buy fruit firm and green and let ripen at home. Crunchy when green, juicy when yellowish, pears work well with cheese, in salads with nuts, and in desserts such as a compote or baked and caramelised.
FOOD
40g unsalted butter 1/3 cup (80ml) extra virgin olive oil 1 large, plump fennel bulb, trimmed and quartered, fronds reserved 4 fresh bay leaves 1 Meyer lemon (optional), cut into 6 wedges Sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup (125ml) verjuice or fruity white wine 80g goat’s curd Baby purple basil or freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley, to serve
Melt the butter over low heat in a heavy-based frying pan until nutbrown, then add a splash of the olive oil and gently seal the fennel quarters on both sides. Add fennel fronds, bay leaves and lemon, if using, then season with salt and pepper. Add the verjuice or white wine and remaining olive oil, then cover and simmer for about 20 minutes or until cooked through. Remove the lid, then increase the heat to high and cook for another 5 minutes, or until fennel is coloured and pan juices are reduced to a syrup. Remove the fennel, season to taste and serve as a warm salad, topped with spoonfuls of goat’s curd and baby purple basil or chopped parsley.
DINING
3 ALMONDS
6 MUSHROOMS
In demand as a health product that helps with weight control, almonds are the go-to snack for many. Shelled almonds should be stored away from light, moisture and heat. Enjoy as they are, or in salads and desserts.
Buttons, cups, flats, portabello and Swiss brown are the most popular. Select firm and store in paper bag in the fridge. Don’t wash, just brush or wipe. Add them raw to salads or toss into just about anything – pasta, risotto, stirfry, soup, sauce, pizza.
4 BABY BRUSSELS Baby Brussel sprouts are harvested at half the size of full-grown ones and are more subtle. They’re high in vitamins and betacarotene. Try blanching whole sprouts, and add to crispy pancetta and toasted almonds.
5 FENNEL
7 GRAPES The grape season peaks in March. You can’t go wrong with any variety, but try Autumn Crisp from Sunraysia in Victoria and, for black grapes, Adora Seedless that are extra-large and perfect on a cheese platter.
The seeds and the bulb have a mild aniseed flavour. Use raw in an autumn salad, or boil, roast, fry or poach.
Fennel with goat's curd This is an extract from Maggie Beer’s Autumn Harvest Recipes by Maggie Beer, with photography by Mark Chew, Lantern, $29.99.

Ian Moss, Cessnock Performing Arts Centre, Saturday 26 March
MOSS STRIPPED BACK ot on the heels of a mammoth, soldout 2015 tour to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his watershed solo acoustic album Six Strings, ubiquitous Oz music legend Ian Moss is continuing the tour with a formidable 42 dates that will include a stopover in Cessnock this month. “Over the years, the Hunter Region has been very kind to me,” he said. “Newcastle, in particular, was one of the first towns, other than Wollongong, to really lock in behind Chisel. At the time, there was a real sense that if you were a band from Australia, you weren’t as good as bands from America, but the pub rock explosion changed all that and 22
Newcastle was definitely a big part of it.” Possibly the closest the unassuming Moss has ever come to a greatest hits package, Six Strings is a live acoustic set that sees the Cold Chisel guitarist performing acoustic arrangements of some of his better known material – both solo and with Chisel – and proved once and for all that Moss could be just as compelling a singer and guitarist with all of the electric bells and whistles stripped away. As an added bonus the show will feature deep cuts from his Let’s All get Together and Soul on West 53rd sets. “It’s the same show, but this time around I’ll be playing theatres which offer a much different dynamic to the pub and club shows,” he said.
“A lot of the venues I’d played at in the past, for these shows, were based around selling food and alcohol, and while probably 95% of the audience was completely behind what I was doing, there always seemed to be one table who just didn’t get it – who were there just to knock a few back. “The thing with these shows is that they are quite intimate and when the audience isn’t giving you 100%, it’s hard to give 100% back. That’s why theatre shows are great because it’s more of a captive audience.” While he is still drawn to the massive rock bravado of Chisel, Moss said playing acoustically gives him the opportunity to spread his creative wings. “We [Cold Chisel] played a bloody great show at Hope Estate last year to about 18,000 people, but the last solo show I did was to a sold out room of 500 people and you could hear a pin drop – they’re very different beasts but I still get immense pleasure out of doing both,” he said. “With the acoustic thing, though, you do get to play around with expression and dynamics a lot more than you would with Chisel or with a full band show. If I get to a particular line on a given night and I feel it calls for me to scream it out – I’ll give it a good old yell – you can go from a scream to a whisper on a whim, something you can’t really do in a band framework.” For Moss, who has been travelling the Australian rock and roll highways and byways for the better part of 40 years, the lure of the stage is still as strong as ever. “It’s just such a rewarding feeling, playing a great show and having the audience give it back to you – I suppose I’ll always need someone to show off to, ” he laughed. “It really is an indescribable pleasure and quite addictive so I see no need to stop yet. Clapton is still doing it, BB King nearly died on stage, so if it’s still good enough for them it’s good enough for me.” - Stephen Bisset

wet mat. Place it prior to bedtime on a patch bordering dead grass and green. Turn it over early in the morning and see what has surfaced. Don’t be surprised if black beetles are present in sandy areas. Most lawn pest chemicals will treat grubs, beetles and crickets. Application should be done on mown lawn, late in the afternoon when the pests come to the surface. The chemical of choice can be sprayed or applied with a watering can – repeat this process again in 10 days. It is wise to alternate from the product you used last year. Sweet peas are traditionally planted on St Patrick’s Day, but don’t be worried about waiting. Or it might be wiser this year to sow seed, which won’t be as affected by humidity. Mr Fothergill’s have a new range of 10 varieties of seed in beautiful colours to try.

THIS WEEK... • Although cyclamen may be available in flower, tread carefully as they dislike the humidity. • Apply Seasol to damaged lawn areas to stimulate the root growth. • Sasanqua camellias should be budding, ready to flower. Apply sulphate of potash to improve flowering. • It is an ideal time to plant out trees and shrubs. A little reminder: new lawns and gardens can be watered for two weeks at any time, as restrictions don’t apply. judy@newcastleweekly.com.au

PICK OF THE WEEK Shine Saturday, SBS, 8.35pm, PG (1996) Writer-director Scott Hicks spent the most part of a decade in pre-production of his lifeaffirming story of musical prodigy David Helfgott. Pushed to breaking point by an overbearing father during his adolescence, the tortured soul eventually finds peace, and true love, as an adult. Hicks details this tragic father-son power struggle with an accumulated series of crushing episodes. Sharing the central role, Geoffrey Rush (above) and Noah Taylor deliver virtuoso performances that should leave you no less than flabbergasted.

We Bought A Zoo
Warrior Monday, GO!, 9.30pm, M (2011) Aussie Joel Edgerton has been climbing further and further up the star ladder of late and this gritty, punchy film is the reason why. He plays Brendan, the estranged brother of Tommy (Tom Hardy, above) and son of former pro-boxer Paddy. The men have fighting in their veins and when money troubles hit home, they jump in the ring to compete in a tough mixed-martial arts tournament. But the cuts and bruises are only surface-level – it’s the emotional turmoil their alcoholic father inflicted on them as boys that run far deeper.
Wednesday, TEN, 8.30pm, PG (2011) Matt Damon (right) brings his A-list charm to this big-hearted family-friendly flick based on the true story of a British newspaper columnist. Set in California, a widowed father searching for extra meaning in his life moves his young grieving family to the countryside and, as the title helpfully leads us, renovates and re-opens a struggling zoo. There are many obstacles to overcome, including a seemingly doomed financial situation, but there’s still room for a love interest with a plucky young zookeeper (Scarlett Johansson).
