This week... From the editor Our cover story this week pays tribute to Tantrum Youth Arts as they head into their 40th year (page 12). The teachers are outstanding, as are the students and it is well worth giving them your support by catching one of their many performances throughout the year. The confidence and skills the children gain from a quality arts program gives them a great head start in life. Have you signed up for the Great Cessnock Elf Challenge yet? (see story on page 7) This is a great initiative from the Project Cessnock community group and it’s pleasing to see the local council lending their support to the world record attempt by combining the event with the annual Carols in the Park, which is always a success in its own right. I would also like to draw your attention to the ‘ice’ information and discussion forum being held on Tuesday 24 November at Newcastle Town Hall (page 4 story). One of the organisers is Tony Brown, whose name you may recognise as one of the key figures in the introduction of lockout laws for venues in Newcastle, which came about as a result of an increase in alcohol-related violence. - Paul Monforte

Community forum to confront ‘ice’ scourge he increasing problem of the supply and use of crystal methamphetamine in the Hunter Region, also known as ‘ice’, will be the focus of Newcastle

Maitland councillors have nominated Dungog Shire Council as a merger partner.
Councils plan next moves in ongoing merger battle Dungog Shire Council has been nominated as the preferred partner for a merger following an extraordinary meeting of Maitland City Council earlier this week. 4
The decision was reached following a vote of 10-3 from councillors Ben Whiting, Loretta Baker and Robert Aitchison voted against the move.
staff specialist for the NSW Ministry of Health, Dr Adrian Dunlop, clinical nurse consultant, Andrew Taylor and clinical coordinator, Donna Clancy. Specialists in addiction, health, education and community welfare will answer questions in an open forum with participants able to later discuss matters personally with various support and treatment organisations. Topics for discussion will include facts on the extent of use and harm of ‘ice’, the best treatment options and looking at how Newcastle can unite to address the problem. CDAT chairperson, Tony Brown said the crystal methamphetamine forum will be the first in a series on topical alcohol and other drug issues confronting the local community. “The impact of crystal methamphetamine has received considerable national and local media/community attention, necessitating an informed and effective response,” Mr Brown said.
“This includes considering the relative impact of ice compared with the oversupply and misuse of alcohol and all other drugs,” Mr Brown said. “Above all, we intend to generate a constructive response of hope and that united and informed local communities and supporting agencies, including our own, can effectively prevent and address this latest man-made wave of adversity and harms.” The free question and answer forum will be held at Newcastle Town Hall on Tuesday 24 November from 6.30pm to 8pm. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVP to Tony Brown by Monday 23 November by emailing cdatnewcastle@gmail.com CDAT has organised the event in partnership with Hunter New England Health Local Health District, Newcastle City Council and the Australian Drug Foundation. - Paul Monforte
However, a number of the councillors indicated they were reluctantly voting for the proposal following a letter sent to all mayors from Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole which stated “councillors that have demonstrated an ability to work together in reaching agreement to merge will have the opportunity to shape the future of the new council and serve their community until the end of their current term. This will include input to decisions on service levels, branding, jobs, location of key administrative centres and/or local representation. “We ask you to consider carefully the interests of your community and the benefits of a larger council. We ask you to also consider the job protections in place (in particular for areas with fewer than 5000 people) and the
guarantee the Government has given on services, infrastructure, rates and local representation.” The plan is likely to face strong opposition from Dungog councillors who voted against a merger with Maitland. Meanwhile, Lake Macquarie City Council voted 10-2 to propose a three-way merger with Gosford and Wyong councils to form to large entities. The decision, however, would contradict Gosford and Wyong’s plan to form a joint venture of their own. The Government has offered payments of up to $15 million for newly-merged councils to invest in community infrastructure projects or improving services. Funding of up to $10 million will also be provided to meet the initial costs of merging. - Paul Monforte
The Anzac spirit lives on in Belmont Lone Pine seedling has been planted at the Belmont War Memorial in Cullen Park in memory of those who served and died in the Battle of Lone Pine in Gallipoli. The seedling was planted on Remembrance Day, 11 November, by Belmont RSL sub-branch president, Joe Hayes and Lake Macquarie councillor, Laurie Coghlan, in the park opposite the RSL memorial, which was relocated from Memorial Place early last year.

The Battle of Lone Pine took place in an area once covered with Aleppo pine trees. However, all but one had been cleared to provide cover for the Turkish trenches. Lake Macquarie Council’s manager community planning, John Ferguson, said it was fitting that
the seedling was planted during the Anzac Centenary. “Lone Pines are not only a powerful memorial to the 2000 Australians and 7000 Turks who lost their lives during the Battle of Lone Pine in Gallipoli on 6 August 1915, they also prompt us to remember all the men and women who have suffered or died in wars and armed conflicts throughout our nation’s history,” Mr Ferguson said. “The Turkish Pine seedling that has been planted in Cullen Park was propagated from a pinecone retrieved after the Battle of Lone Pine by Sergeant Keith McDowell of the 24th Battalion. “He carried the pinecone for the rest of the war and gave it to his aunt on his return to Australia.”

o the casual observer, the scene at Hunter Stadium following the Newcastle Jets’ 1-1 draw with the Central Coast Mariners would have indicated the visitors had come away with a victory. The jubilant Mariners’ equaliser in the second minute of injury time sucked the life out of the despondent Jets after they had opened the scoring just 10 minutes earlier through striker Milos Trifunovic. Central Coast’s effort was all the more meritorious after playing 70 minutes with only 10 men after Jake McGing was issued a red card for a challenge on Leonardo. Despite playing a man down, the Mariners managed 16 shots on goal to the Jets’ nine, with Newcastle coach Scott Miller critical of his side’s performance. “Today was an opportunity to go top for an hour, and we didn’t take it,” Miller said at the postgame press conference. “That performance at home isn’t to our standards, whatsoever.” However, Miller also pointed
out he was pleased with the overall form of his team, with the Jets sitting in fifth place on the competition ladder. “To be in this position now is very pleasing,” he said. “That’s a great start to the season from a situation, when we first arrived here, that was very challenging.” The Jets will play Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Sunday afternoon with kick-off at 5pm (NSW time). Adelaide are still chasing their first win of the season and come into the match after a 4-2 loss to Wellington Phoenix. A-League ladder: Brisbane Roar 13pts (+6 goal difference), Sydney FC 11pts (+2), Melbourne Victory 10pts (+5), Western Sydney Wanderers 10pts (+2), Newcastle Jets 10pts (+1), Wellington Phoenix 10pts (0), Melbourne City 7pts (-1), Central Coast Mariners 5pts (-4), Perth Glory 3pts (-2), Adelaide United 2pts (-9). - Paul Monforte

ARCHIE ROACH RETURNS TO CHARCOAL LANE
With his seminal treatise on the stolen generation, Took the Children Away recently added to the National Film and Sound Archive’s Sounds of Australia Register, singer-songwriter Archie Roach is going back to where it all began, celebrating the release of his 1990 breakthrough record Charcoal Lane.
hen it comes to songwriters in this country who are able to evoke palpable notions of Australianness and the Australian experience, Archie Roach, along with the likes of Paul Kelly and Don Walker, would have to be pretty close to the top of the tree. 25 years after multiple ARIA-award winner and OAM recipient Roach released the seminal, Paul Kelly-produced album, he is celebrating the milestone with a run of shows (including a Newcastle stop-off) and a double-disc remastering of the album. “It’s going to be good to get back - it’s been about two years since I last played in Newcastle, and there has always been a great amount of support for me there,” Roach told Newcastle Weekly. When it was released in 1990, Charcoal Lane struck an instant chord both here and overseas (particularly Took the Children Away which drew on Roach’s own experiences being part of Australia’s stolen generations) with US Rolling Stone naming the record one of its top 50 albums of 1992 and declaring that “Charcoal Lane is deeply moving in both personal and political terms,” however, Roach said that it was only by happenstance that the milestone was remembered. “Not really, I actually only found out it was 25
Archie Roach will celebrate 25 years of Charcoal Lane in Newcastle next weekend Photo: Ferne Millen
years by accident,” he said. “The album was dedicated to my cousin who died 25 years ago and we were recently remembering his life and I realised it was 25 years since the album came out – I was a little bit shocked actually. “When I wrote the album, of course I thought that there were some good songs on there, but I certainly had no idea that it would catch on as it did,” he said. “I don’t think you’ll find too many songwriters that will tell you otherwise. “I think the album struck a chord with people because it took a much more personal and human approach rather than an angry ‘beat people about the head’ tone.” Roach, who subsequently released seven
studio albums after Charcoal Lane saw his career put on hold in 2010 after the death of his wife Ruby and protracted battles with stroke and lung cancer, made a stunning return with 2012’s critically lauded Into the Bloodstream and, speaking to Roach, there is a sense that there are plenty of stories yet to be told. “As I mature as a person and a songwriter it becomes important not to fall into the trap of repeating yourself and writing the same song over and over – it’s essential to always be looking toward the next challenge and it’s something you never stop learning.” - Archie Roach – Cambridge Hotel – Saturday 21 November - Stephen Bisset 11
THE WORLD’S LONGEST TANTRUM n everyday life, tantrums are never the most pleasant of things, but in the Newcastle theatre world, nothing could be further from the truth. Tantrum Youth Arts, kicked off their 2016 season last week with their Full Circle event doubling as the commencement of the youth theatre company’s 40th anniversary celebrations. “While we are cheating a bit, because we did begin under the name 2 Til 5 in 1976, the ethos of putting young people at the forefront of the dramatic process has remained the same, and we’re proud to be celebrating this auspicious milestone next year and this is the first of many celebrations we will be having throughout next year as well as a fantastic 2016 program,” artistic director Amy Hardingham told Newcastle Weekly.

Two of the stars of Tantrum Youth Arts, Bronte Ryan and Gill Kasper.
The company was established by Barney Langford and Mike Forster under the name 2 Til 5 Youth Theatre Co-op as a Saturday afternoon drama workshop and, owing to increasing popularity, established Tantrum Theatre, in 1996, as an offshoot company for emerging actors and theatre artists with the two eventually merging in 2005. Hardingham attributed the company’s longevity to staging new work that is relevant to
its audience and the performers. “There is a huge theatre scene here in Newcastle and Tantrum gives these young people the opportunity to tell new and untold stories. “In the last five years, we have focused on developing local, site-specific content which has resonated with audiences.” Next year promises to be no different with a new site-specific production Manning the Fort which tells the story of members from the Australian Women’s Army Service who were charged with manning Fort Scratchley during World War II, one of the jewels in the crown in the 2016 program. “I’m very excited about that one as my husband’s grandmother was a member of the Women’s Army Service,” Hardingham said. “We’ve also got things like our ever-popular short play festival Hissyfest, our theatre-in-theatre production Opening Doors

FOOD
Bowl & Fork - New Holland Publishers RRP $40
WINE
DINING
A DYNAMIC DUO ith the countdown on to summer, former My Kitchen Rules contestant Anna Lisle is releasing her debut cookbook, Bowl & Fork which includes the type of food you want to eat after a hard day in the office or when you’ve been running around after your kids. Anna’s food philosophy is simple - she believes in eating whole foods ingredients in their most nutritious and natural form - vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats, seafood, legumes, nuts and seeds. Like many women (and men), Anna is aware of the pressures of body image and know that listening to our bodies’ needs makes more sense than setting up rules for what we can or cannot eat. Here are two tempting dishes – a Korean and an English classic – to truly whet your appetite. Bon appetit!
KOREAN BEEF BIBIMBAP
“What I love about this traditional Korean dish is the endless variations. I have used beef mince, however, you can char-grill scotch fillet or rib eye to slice on top or mix and match the vegetable dishes” - Anna Lisle Serves 4
INGREDIENTS
METHOD
Sesame vinaigrette
Start by preparing the sesame vinaigrette. Combine the rice vinegar and sesame oil in a small bowl. Whisk to combine.
2 tbsp rice wine vinegar
RHUBARB AND PISTACHIO FOOL “This classic British dessert is so simple yet impressive. Fools are traditionally made with just cream however I have added some Greek yoghurt to keep it light and fresh. Rhubarb has an unapologetic tartness that is a perfect match for this supercreamy dessert. You can cook this dish all year round by swapping the rhubarb for raspberries, strawberries and even apples and pears.” - Anna Lisle Serves 4 to 6 – gluten free
Vegetables 2 Lebanese cucumbers, thinly sliced lengthways ½ teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon sesame oil 2 small carrots, peeled, chopped into thin matchsticks 100g bean sprouts, trimmed 80g baby spinach
INGREDIENTS 60g unsalted butter 100g soft brown sugar 500g rhubarb, roughly chopped
1 vanilla bean pod, whole
Beef bowl
300ml double cream
2tsp peanut oil or any vegetable oil
125g gluten free Greek yoghurt
2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped
75g roasted pistachios, shelled and roughly chopped
1cm fresh ginger, finely grated 750g lean beef mince
METHOD Combine butter and sugar in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Add the rhubarb and vanilla bean pod and cook gently until tender, about 10-15 minutes. Remove vanilla bean pod and discard. Set aside to cool completely. Using hand-held beaters or an electric mixer, whip the cream until soft peaks form, then stir in the yoghurt. Reserving a little of the syrup, fold the rest into the whipped cream and yoghurt. Divide between four bowls or serving glasses and drizzle over with the reserved rhubarb syrup. Scatter with chopped pistachios to serve. 16
1 tsp sesame oil
4tbsp tamari (or light soy sauce) 1 tbsp brown sugar 2 tbsp sake or dry sherry To serve 4 free-range eggs 1tbsp peanut oil or any vegetable oil 1 tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste) 1tbsp white sesame seeds, roasted 2 sheets of nori, shredded 4 scallions (spring onions), thinly sliced Steamed sushi rice
Toss the cucumber with ½ teaspoon salt and place in a colander. Set over a bowl to drain for 15-20 minutes. Rinse and squeeze dry. Place in a bowl and toss with 2 teaspoons of the sesame vinaigrette. Set aside. Heat a non-stick frying pan to high and stir-fry carrot with 2 teaspoons of sesame vinaigrette. Place in a bowl and set aside. In a saucepan of boiling water, blanch baby spinach to wilt, then drain and place in a small bowl. Toss with 2 teaspoons of sesame vinaigrette and set aside. Add beef and peanut oil to a large frying pan and cook over high heat. Add the garlic, ginger and beef mince. Cook until lightly golden and crisp. Reduce heat and stir through the tamari, brown sugar and sake. Cook for a further two minutes. In a separate non-stick frying pan, heat oil to medium high and fry eggs until the whites are just set and yolks are still runny. Divide steamed rice between warm bowls. Surround with beef and vegetables, each ingredient in its own little pile. Place a fried egg and a teaspoon of gochujang (per person) on top of the rice and garnish with sesame seeds, shredded nori and scallions.

stylish summer hair trends
Hair trends come and go - it can be pretty hard to keep up. As the days get warmer, we tend to lean toward the more sun-kissed shades like variations of blonde. We add highlights and babylights, and some even go for a more dramatic statement like bright pink. 1. Blonde These five trends range from timeless to ‘of the moment.’
Celebrity inspiration - Jennifer Hawkins Blonde is a timeless classic and deemed the most popular hair colour for the warmer months. From golden blonde to platinum, you can’t go wrong while experimenting with this light look.
WITH FASHION EDITOR, KAYLA STEPHENSON
3. Tortoise Shell 2. Bronde Celebrity inspiration Cara Delevingne Best described as brunette with a golden-blonde glow, A-listers everywhere are embracing what has been called this summer's must have hair colour. 18
Celebrity inspiration Chrissy Teigen A blend of gold, chocolate, chestnut and honey shades achieve this look. By using freehand application, it is similar to an ombré, with added highlights. Otherwise known as ‘Ecaille’, this is the perfect look to lighten-up darker hair colour.
5. Hair Chalk 4. Earthy Reds Celebrity inspiration Emma Stone This hot hair hue is becoming more and more popular, gracing many red carpets and catwalks in 2015. By sticking to warmer copper or fiery hues, red is this season's sultry seductress.
Celebrity inspiration Demi Lovato Hair chalk is all of the fun, with none of the commitment. It allows even the most skeptical to experiment with temporary colours like pastel pink, and bold blue. When you’re down, just wash it out.

LIVING
RENOVATING
THE MERCURIAL DESIGNER ou take a look around your home, and it’s hard to describe just what style you have settled on. Have you found it difficult to stick to whites and find yourself surrounded by mixing colour palettes? You might just be a mercurial designer. Your look is eclectic, it changes often, it’s a mix of styles, but somehow it just works. It channels you, your lifestyle and who you are. There are a few ways to make sure your home stays as malleable as your ever-changing style.
1. Start with a neutral base Not everything can be easily changed with pieces like the lounge, the bed, television unit and basically any main furniture items it should be a rule of thumb to stick to a neutral palette. Think brown, white, beige, and black. This way you have a foundation and can be free when choosing your accents.
2.
2. Utilise easy to change items Throw pillows are a fantastic example, they come in a huge variety of different colours, double-sided, changeable patterns, textures and most importantly are inexpensive. Use the rule of opposites and pair a matte pillow with a shiny or glittery one for added depth. Throw rugs and picture frames are also perfect.
3. Mix it up You may already be notoriously known for mixing styles, you may not. This technique is perfect for the mercurial designer; you can create an amazing space by playing outside the box, try mixing bohemian accents with classic.
4.
4. Layer, layer, layer!
That beautiful floor-length gold-rimmed mirror you have just laying in the hallway? Throw a mid-sized abstract canvas in front; drape a low-laying plant beside it. Coffee table looking a little bare, stack some books; add a few candles and a floral display. These simple techniques will bring your space to life.

Don’t put up with cracked floors, walls, pavement or driveways any longer!
Those big beautiful canvases you obtained in your 20s from your artist friends can be perfectly matched with those screen prints you found at a street sale. When mixing styles and looks, don’t be afraid to be a little whimsical, transform a dull room into a makeshift art display.

PICK OF THE WEEK Blades of Glory
Catch Me If You Can
Sunday, ELEVEN, 8.30pm, M (2007) Comic actor Will Ferrell (pictured) is not nearly as consistent as he should be (for every Old School, there’s been a Bewitched), but he scores big points in this hilarious spoof of the sequined world of figure skating, which is essentially Talladega Nights on ice. Skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Napoleon Dynamite’s Jon Heder) find a loophole after being banned from the sport that will allow them to compete: if they can put aside their differences.

Saturday, NBN, 7pm, PG (2002) The incredible true story of con man Frank Abagnale Jr (Leonardo DiCaprio) proves the perfect subject for Steven Spielberg to helm his most light-hearted yet compelling film in years. In the early ’60s, 16-year-old Abagnale flees his home and creates myriad false identities (and cheques) to charm and procure millions from those he encounters. But he doesn’t reckon on the skills of FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks), who is forever on his trail. Spielberg’s superlative story effortlessly alternates between genial comedy and serious drama. 12pm Golf. Australian Masters.
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Friday, GO!, 8.45pm, M (2010) In this seventh instalment of the beloved Harry Potter series, Harry faces new troubles – he must collect all of the Horcruxes the evil Lord Voldemort has left behind, despite having no idea where these magical objects are hidden. Abandoning the haven of Hogwarts, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe, right) and his loyal mates Hermione and Ron (Emma Watson and Rupert Grint) plunge into unknown dangers in a desperate bid to defeat the dark Lord.

The Full Moon on the 22nd warns you to be careful when dealing with important documentation and avoid going over the top in legal and financial matters. You’ll make a fresh commitment to your present job or change to one that will stand in good stead in the future.
This is a good time to give attention to your personal appearance. The Full Moon on 22 November indicates that your feelings will rise to the surface and will be hard to control; all your relationships and friendships will be re-evaluated and some major changes will be made.
The Full Moon on 22 November is time to take care of your health and that of family members. On the work front you may need to prove your worth. Also if you’ve been ignoring problems from faulty pipes to family tensions, things could surface in a dramatic fashion.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
You could soon be signing leases on premises related to your work or home. The Full Moon on 22 November indicates challenges to do with overseas matters and travel plans. You need to take your time with an important decision, to nurture your needs, individuality and personal power.
The 22 November Full Moon warns you to be careful of being manipulated in some way where money and finances are concerned; when you discover what is going on it could cause you to react angrily. You could find that your finances are inevitably wrapped up with your emotions.
The 22 November Full Moon indicates that you may decide that a friend is no longer your cup of tea and that you have had enough of them, then all of a sudden you find out something intriguing about them, therefore don’t judge a book by its cover!
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
This is a time of hard work and achievement. The 22 November Full Moon indicates that you will need to be seen as honest and respectable in your public and personal life, as this is a time when secrets and deceptions might emerge in an uncomfortably embarrassing way.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
At work you’re going to need all your communications skills. The Full Moon on the 22nd warns you to be careful of stepping on the egos of others at work, especially those in senior positions. Learn to think before you speak to avoid foot in mouth syndrome.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21 The Full Moon on the 22nd warns of slipping into a strange state of despair over loneliness or relationship issues and exacerbating the situation by the use of drugs and alcohol. It would be best to focus on your diet, exercise, meditation and getting ample rest.
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 You may decide to take up studies of a philosophical nature. The Full Moon on the 22nd indicates that a friend’s loyalty will touch your heart when certain family dramas develop. You will need to be careful of over indulging, especially if you don’t want an expanding waistline.

The Full Moon on the 22nd may stir up feelings of resentment or invalidation in your friendship sector, especially if you are the one making all the effort! You might decide to study a TAFE course in practical subjects such as car maintenance or cookery.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
The 22 November Full Moon indicates that your home may begin to resemble a battle field as you find yourself involved in a series of family arguments especially over money and joint assets. The serious side of financial and legal matters will now need to be dealt with.

My favourite things MY MITCH ALBOM BOOK COLLECTION Tanya: “Mitch is one of my favourite authors and one of the few people I have ever been awestruck interviewing. I love rereading his books especially The Five People You Meet in Heaven.”
NICE CLOCKS AND WATCHES Steve: “I love a great-looking clock or watch. My whole life is run on time - the early alarm, the show, the school pickups to after school activities. I’m always looking at clocks or watches so, I reckon, look at good ones.”
MY NESPRESSO COFFEE POD MACHINE Steve: “The first thing I do every morning seven days a week. Double espresso morning!”
Tanya Wilks and Steve G 102.9 KOFM BREAKFAST PROGRAM HOSTS
Regular listeners of 102.9 KOFM’s breakfast program may feel they’ve heard everything there is to know about the lives of hosts Tanya Wilks and Steve G after spending the hours from 5.30am and 9am, Monday to Friday, with them each week. But just what do the affable media stars enjoy away from the microphones? - Paul Monforte
DUBLIN
BIG, GNARLY OLD TREES
Tanya: “Because it’s where I married my husband and, when we go home to see his family, everyone is always happy to see us and on their best behaviour because visits are rare and special. I am partial to a proper tap Guinness, too.”
Tanya: “The ones that look like they most probably come to life when you’re not looking. The type that hold a tree house, or support a grown woman who wants to nestle in a fork and read a Mitch Albom book.”
THE OCEAN Steve: “Nothing relaxes me more than looking out at the ocean, from a boat, ship, jetty or beach as long as it’s the ocean. I just recently watched a sunset over the ocean in Hawaii. Simply stunning. Nature at her finest.”
