From the editor Our cover story this week on The Confidence Collective is a fantastic initiative from two local ladies – Lauren Devine and Rebecca Lawson. Their mission statement sums it up beautifully – “The Confidence Collective aims to create a tribe of confident women who sparkle on the inside, and radiate positivity on the outside” It’s particularly encouraging to see that they place so much emphasis on achieving positive mindsets and removing all those negative thoughts that are easy to be consumed by.

Meanwhile, it’s a great time of year here in the Hunter, with a number of spring fairs and festivals popping up all over the region. You have to be strong-willed as a parent though – each of these events invariably offers a large number of amusement rides and showbags. Of course, children want to have a go on everything and the cost soon adds up. It’s also leading into concert season in the vineyards, which always adds a tremendous buzz to the area, and of course, boost the tourist dollars. - Paul Monforte

The closure of the heavy rail line at Wickham remains a hot topic. Photo: Jamie Wicks

Debate rages on despite new rail closure legislation pinion remains divided following the passing of NSW state legislation allowing the removal of infrastructure relating to the closure of the heavy rail line between Wickham and Newcastle stations. The Transport Administration Amendment (Closure of Railway Line at Newcastle) Bill 2015 progressed through Parliament after the government gained the support of Shooters and Fishers Party upper house MPs, Robert Borsac and Robert Brown. Member for Charlestown, Jodie Harrison said it was disappointing to see the Shooters and

Fishers Party MPs throw their allegiance behind the Baird government rather than support the wishes of the Hunter community. “Around the world, billions of dollars are being spent on building rail infrastructure into cities – yet this government has been instrumental in removing Newcastle’s,” Ms Harrison said. “Our city deserves a quality public transport system and we will hold this government accountable to deliver the best possible outcome for our region’s capital in both planning and public transport terms.” Greens MP and transport spokesperson, Dr

Mehreen Faruqi referred to the decision as “a shameful day for the NSW government.” “The government have shown, yet again, that they run NSW for profit and private interests – not the public interest, not for people;” Dr. Farqui said. “Public transport is an essential service for our society, and good public transport is hard to come by. The Newcastle rail line has provided a fantastic service for the people of NSW for over 150 years, and now the government is going to rip it up.” However, the Hunter Business Chamber welcomed the passing of the bill as fantastic news to Newcastle and the region. “For too long this city has been held to ransom by a vocal minority but this is a sign they have lost the argument and it’s time for everyone to adopt a positive outlook for the future,” Chamber CEO, Kristen Keegan said. “It is exciting that we can finally get on with the job at hand, ignoring distracting and unnecessary debates around the rail line.” Premier, Mike Baird, in a Facebook message to Novocastrians, described the bill as a huge step forward in the government’s effort to transform Newcastle. “I promised, in the lead up to the election, that we would not forget you and that we would keep our promises,” Mr Baird wrote. “And that is exactly what is happening. Light rail is coming. And we are excited about cracking on and building it.” - Paul Monforte

Businesses rejoice as Levee Shared Zone opens After a number of delays, the first stage of Maitland's Levee Project was officially opened last week with Mayor Peter Blackmore on hand for a ribbon cutting ceremony. The opening means the public are now able to drive through the section of High Street that has been closed to traffic since the start of development on the Maitland Heritage Mall 27 years ago. “This is a significant milestone and an exciting day for the people of Maitland,” Cr Blackmore said. “The Levee is an important part of the revitalisation of Central Maitland and the return of traffic through the precinct will support 4

new opportunities for retail, entertainment, leisure and the night time economy." The Levee Shared Zone is a oneway, west-bound strip that runs between Bourke and Elgin streets with a speed limit not exceeding 10km/h. The mall is where pedestrians and vehicles share a common place, there are no road lines, kerbs or gutters and, while being a shared zone, drivers must give way to pedestrians. “Council acknowledges the patience shown by both the public and local business during the development, and will continue to work collaboratively with

businesses and the community on component two,” Council’s General Manager David Evans said. The next stage of development is set to include the construction of the new Riverlink building connecting High Street to the banks of the Hunter River. It will also see the development of public open spaces, new amenities, cafés and footpath/cycleway upgrades along the Riverside Walk and improved access to the CBD. Work on the design phase for component two is now well underway and work is expected to commence in 2016. - Kayla Stephenson

Cessnock High School Principal Chris Bice with Mayor Bob Pynsent observing the Reach Foundation workshops for Year 9 students.

Workshops get to the heart of youth mental health igh school students in the Cessnock area have been treated to two 90-minute mental health workshops as part of a push this month to promote positive mental health for local youth. Cessnock City Mayor Councillor Bob Pynsent attended Cessnock High School where Year 9 students were busy rotating through an InRhythm drumming workshop and a session facilitated by the Reach Foundation, which by established by AFL great Jim Stynes, who died in 2012. “The Reach Foundation workshops had relevant themes such as exploring self-care and support strategies and increasing overall wellbeing,” Cr Pynsent said. “These workshops complement

each school’s social and personal learning curriculum, providing students with positive and relevant strategies and skills they can apply at school and to their everyday lives.” Cessnock High School Principal Chris Bice was very impressed with the enthusiasm shown from his students. “The InRhythm workshop was a fun and therapeutic exploration of awareness and group connection for the students which they all seemed to enjoy very much,” Mr Bice said. A range of mental health activities have been organised for the month of October by the Cessnock Youth Centre and Outreach Service (CYCOS). The CYCOS can be contacted on 4991 5372.

Seniors Christmas Concert tickets now available Tickets are available now for the NSW Government’s popular Seniors Christmas Concert to be held at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre on Monday 23 November. Creating a world of confidence

E

spresso martinis, sunshine and chatting – this was the simple recipe for the conception of an empowering idea, The Confidence Collective. The Confidence Collective’s aim is to create a tribe of confident women who sparkle on the inside and radiate positivity on the outside, led by dynamic duo Lauren Devine of The Devine Life and Rebecca Lawson of Rebecca Lawson Makeup Artistry. “When we left high school, we just ended up in separate directions until, one day, years later at a friends party, we just started talking and thought ‘the sparks are still there, we are still friends’ so, we decided to catch up for a coffee,” Ms Lawson said. “That turned into espresso martinis and magic happened, we talked about our different businesses and we uncovered there was a common theme and that was a lack of confidence.”

The Confidence Collective workshops are designed to empower women, by combining information with tips and tricks in focused areas such as hair, makeup, health and wellness. Ms Devine said the workshops were

about marrying internal confidence with external confidence. “What we see in society, women tend to think ‘well, if I wear make up or a wear certain clothes, that gives me confidence’ but what we want to do is get all of that good stuff and combine it with the mindset training,” she said. “So, it’s about creating a powerhouse of confidence and really giving women all the tips and tricks they need, whether it’s for employment, relationships, or family.” The final workshop for the year will be the biggest one yet - delivered by panel of exceptional women in five fields of makeup artistry, fashion styling, holistic health, hairdressing and creating a confidence mindset. The four-hour workshop will include local caterers, Wild Rabbit, who will bring a delicious feasting table, champagne on arrival and live entertainment. The event will be held at PKF Building, 755 Hunter Street, on October 25, 2-6pm. Tickets are $80. Book online at theconfidencecollective.com.au - Kayla Stephenson

Another tough challenge for resilient Jets he improving Newcastle Jets will again have the chance to test their credentials against the A-League elite when they take on Melbourne Victory at Hunter Stadium on Friday night. The Jets fought hard in their first home game of the year against glamour club Sydney FC last weekend, with an 89th-minute header from visiting captain Alex Brosque proving the difference between the sides. While Jets coach Scott Miller was disappointed not to have at least secured a draw, he said the commitment his players had shown throughout the pre-season was on display. “It’s three points from six so far.

It’s disappointing to lose at home but we’re making steps,” Miller said. “We can’t be measured now but at the end of the season.” Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti escaped serious injury after being struck in the face by Sydney striker Shane Smeltz’s boot during a contest for the ball. No action was taken against Smeltz, with referee Peter Green later confirming he had seen the incident and deemed the contact to be incidental. Victory are undefeated after two rounds of the season, following a 0-0 draw away to Adelaide and a 3-2 win over Melbourne City. Friday night’s match kicks off at 7.40pm. -Paul Monforte

Wildfires providing pathway for talented locals The best local rugby talent will again be on display this weekend in the final match of the Emerging Wildfires four-week schedule. The Emerging Wildfires is a proactive program providing the opportunity to expose players, coaches and support staff drawn from the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union competition to a level of rugby that will accelerate their

individual development. The aim of the program is to ensure players don’t feel compelled to move to Sydney to realise their potential in the sport. The Wildfires will take on the Deadwood Rugby Barbarians at Newcastle’s No.2 Sportsground on Saturday October 24. The Barbarians, founded in 2009, are an invitational club and The Emerging Wildfires in action against the Sydney Stars development team.

ROCK LEGENDS STILL MENTAL AFTER ALL THESE YEARS hile they may’ve started life as an elaborate ruse to con some free beer out of unsuspecting publicans, iconic 80s pop rockers and ARIA hall of famers Mental As Anything are as strong as ever in 2015. In fact, as Newcastle Weekly discovered when chatting to frontman Greedy Smith, fans may not have to wait too long for some new Mentals material – their first since the 2009 long player Tents Up. “I’m actually going to be talking to the record company today about a plan that we have to maybe release a new single,” he said. “Back in the ‘80s it was the done thing to release a single to support a tour, but we’ve basically never stopped touring so it’s probably about time. We’ve also got a great band at the moment so I’m quite excited to get them all in the studio again.” While Smith and co-conspirator Martin Plaza may be the only original members left, the Mentals circa 2015 features some pretty heavy talent – including guitar wizard Martin Cilla from surf rock stalwarts The Atlantics. Smith and co will be hitting Lizotte’s next

Mental as Anything will make a welcome return to Newcastle next week

week and he said punters could expect a welloiled run through of some of their biggest crowd pleasers - Live It Up, The Nips are Getting Bigger, Too Many Times, He’s Just No Good For You et al – with a few newer tracks for good measure. “We’ve been coming to Newcastle since the early, early days and it’s always good to come back,” he said. “Also it’s a nice proposition, playing somewhere like Lizotte’s where there’s a fair expectation that the audience is going to be well fed and well watered before we go on – it makes our job easier.” While there’s no denying that the Mentals brand of self-effacing yet incisive pop rock looms large on the Oz music landscape, Smith said he prefers not to think in terms of legacy and influence. “For me, I tend not to think about the large historical context of things,” he said. “I am just constantly grateful that the songs we have written have lasted this long and people still like them. We just feel a duty to play them properly.” - Mental As Anything – Lizotte’s Lambton – Saturday 31 October - Stephen Bisset

time out FILM REVIEW: THE WALK

I

f you suffer from vertigo or any form of acrophobia, you might want to give Robert Zemeckis’ (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) latest feature a wide berth. The Walk is director Zemeckis’ dramatisation of French high-wire artist Phillipe Petit’s hairraising tight-rope walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in 1974. While it doesn’t seem like much of a plot, The Walk delves deeper into Petit’s motivations in attempting such a crazy and illegal stunt as well

as focussing on the relationship between Phillipe and his mentor, Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley) and the international group of co-conspirators conscripted to help Petit pull off this walk in the clouds. However, the 2008 documentary Man on a Wire provides much better insights. While we get a broad strokes view of Petit the man, it’s when he steps out onto that wire when the film truly shines. The cinematography is, without hyperbole, breathtaking, giving the audience a palpable sense of being right there alongside Petit.

ON THE BIG SCREEN

into a house and discover a video camera and a box of tapes in the garage. When they look through the camera’s lens, they begin to see the paranormal activity happening around them, including the re-emergence of two girls. While the series has dipped in quality over the last couple of outings, all signs point to this one restoring the franchise to its former glory. Bradley Cooper stars in the comedy-drama Burnt as a chef who destroyed his career with drugs and bad behaviour. He returns to London, determined to redeem himself by spearheading a top restaurant that can gain three Michelin stars.

There’s certainly a lot to sink your teeth into at Event Cinemas with a Cold War spy thriller, a creepy ghost story and a cooking comedy drama among this week’s releases. Iconic auteur Steven Spielberg returns with Bridge of Spies - an edge-of-your-seat Cold War thriller starring Tom Hanks as an American lawyer who is recruited by the CIA to help rescue a pilot detained in the Soviet Union. The latest in the Paranormal Activity horror franchise Ghost Dimension sees a family move

taste hen the bistro is serving up the kind of fare that I experienced on my visit to Carrington Bowling Club last weekend, it is truly an affair to remember. At first glance, the menu might look quite simple, however this is simple, unpretentious food done right – cooked to perfection and full of flavour. First up, my dining partner and I decided to share an entrée of vegetarian arancini – and we were not disappointed. The arancini were bursting with a smooth and creamy risotto, replete with heady mushroom flavours while the accompanying tomato sauce was rich and zesty. The soft rice inside the crunchy crumb coating made this richly contrasted dish a great introduction to the menu. For main, my dining partner chose the pork cutlet and to say she was impressed would almost be an understatement. So very tender and still moist this delivered far more than expected. The perfectly cooked pork was seasoned with a subtle spiciness that complimented the delicate flavour of the cutlet while a generous serve of thick-cut chips and a vibrant, crisp salad, dressed with a peppy vinaigrette rounded the dish off perfectly.

DINING

CARRINGTON TICKS ALL THE BOXES

I decided on the scotch fillet and even the fussiest of beef 'connoisseurs' would be hard pressed to find fault with this shining example of what a steak can be - almost meltingly soft and a perfect medium-rare throughout. Fresh spears of asparagus were treated with care and not in anyway adulterated by overcooking, and teamed with a pile of roasted chats and a beautifully cooked and full flavoured field mushroom. The almost sweet and tangy currant jus finished this plate and brought a few separate ingredients together to make a great meal. With our appetites well and truly sated, my dining partner have already started planning our next visit and with $1 oysters on offer every Thursday, it could be sooner rather than later. So, if you’re looking for honest, unpretentious, full-of-flavour fare that is served in a friendly, welcoming environment, then you’d do well to make the trek over the Cowper Street Bridge to experience the bistro at Carrington Bowling Club. - Carrington Bowling Club – 1 Cowper Street, Carrington. 4961 4140 - Stephen Bisset

With community-based clubs becoming a rarer and rarer commodity these days, it’s quite refreshing to see venues like Carrington Bowling Club still going strong.

THE MIRACLE OIL Coconut oil has been front and centre in the wellness world for sometime now. Chances are you have probably tried it, be it in your cooking or perhaps that time you ran out of moisturiser. Here are five ways to utilise coconut oil. 1. Makeup remover

3. Body scrub

5. Clean makeup brushes

An effective and gentle makeup remover that will leave your skin fresh and glowing. Simply put a pea sized amount on your fingers or cotton ball and rub your face in small circles. Rinse with water and use a light face wash to clean the face. Dry off and you’re set!

Seeing as though coconut oil is incredibly hydrating, its great for cleansing, moisturizing and softening the skin. Making an at home body scrub is easy, combine melted coconut oil with 2 tablespoons of sugar and add your favourite frangrant oil, ie: Lavender. Voila!

It’s important to clean makeup brushes on a regular basis. Dip your brushes in a little melted coconut oil. Use a paper towel to rub the brush until the makeup is off. Rinse in warm water and let air dry.

2. Hair conditioning

4. Improve dental health

Coconut oil is packed with vitamin E, and is deeply conditioning. It helps to nourish dryness and combats frizz, leaving your hair silky smooth and oh so shiny. Use it in a hair mask to hydrate or even dab on the ends of your hair to prevent further breakage.

Coconut oil has many antibacterial properties which reduce bacteria and plaque in the mouth. Oil pulling strengthens teeth and has been shown to help clear gingivitis. Swish a tablespoon around in the mouth for 15-20 minutes.

PICK OF THE WEEK The Bourne Ultimatum Friday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2007) Thinking person’s action hero Matt Damon returns as Jason Bourne (left), the renegade spy with a serious grudge against his former CIA employers. Director Paul Greengrass returns for the third in the series and mounts a heartpounding thrill ride that will leave you gasping for breath as the amnesiac assassin travels from the rooftops of Tangiers to the streets of Manhattan in his ongoing quest for exoneration. This Oscar-winning, adrenalin-pumped adventure is possibly the finest of the trilogy.

Friday

The Dark Knight

The Vow

Sunday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2008) Heath Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s greats. The Dark Knight sees Gotham’s rising superhero (Christian Bale, pictured with Ledger) making progress in his vigilante quest, with the help of Lt Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and newly appointed District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). That is, until the appearance of psychopathic mastermind The Joker. Director Christopher Nolan and his coscreenwriter brother Jonathan Nolan (Memento) have created what could be one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Saturday, GEM, 6.30pm, PG (2012) Rachel McAdams (left) charms in this predictable chick flick about a married couple whose love is tested. Paige (McAdams) is in a car crash and awakens from a coma with no memory of her loving husband, Leo (a syrupy Channing Tatum, Magic Mike). Believing she is still engaged to her sleazy former fiancé (Scott Speedman), and with her parents (Sam Neill and Jessica Lange) happy to see the back of him, Leo has a big job ahead to rekindle their once perfect life. Prepare for a cascade of tear-jerker moments.

You need to make extra time for rest as your work schedule will be bulging at the seams. The 27 October Full Moon indicates that a close relationship or friendship may be coming to an end; by letting go you will actually gain something of much higher value.

The Full Moon on the 27th indicates that if you were expecting a peaceful time at home, then you need to think again! Anything could happen – unexpected visitors, a sudden need to call a handyman or an urge to redecorate. Just go with the flow and take it all as it comes!

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21 The 27 October Full Moon indicates that plans with a loved one may bring bonding experiences, but they could be expensive. Don't let irritations get under your skin; being patient will achieve more. People who are in positions of authority will be pleased with your work.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Your love life looks up when a charming and flirtatious mood takes a hold. The Full Moon on 27 October indicates that a challenging discussion will touch emotional nerves, so keep your cool for positive results and don’t allow your insecurities to get the better of you.

RUBBISH REMOVALS

FAMILY “My wife Lauren and I have three children; Ayla, Shiloh and Jacob, I’m incredibly proud of my family.”

My favourite things HUNTER VALLEY WINE “Being involved in the Hunter Valley Wine Show Board is a great way for me to have an excuse to enjoy my love of good wine at the same time as helping the industry to continually improve. The variety of grapes from shiraz to semillon that is grown locally makes it easy to find beautiful and world class wines.”

HAWKS NEST “We get up there regularly to go camping. Whilst there, we spend time 4WDing on the beach, surfing, playing golf and having fun on the Myall Lakes.”

GLASS

David Flynn AFL GREAT, BOARD MEMBER OF HUNTER VALLEY WINE SHOW, CHARITY SUPPORTER

David Flynn has been a familiar face in the Hunter region for a number of years, with his more than 200 games for Cardiff Hawks AFL club, seeing him progress to playing senior football for the Sydney Swans and Carlton Blues. David has also been board member of The Hunter Valley Wine Show since 2012 and is the Chairman for the Holes 4 Hospital Charity Golf Day which raises funds for Singleton Hospital. Since 2006, David has been working as managing director of Hunter Valley Glass & Windscreens.

“Glass is a dynamic and evolving industry with technology advancing the applications it can be used in. It’s an exciting product to work with as it can be as simple as a window and sleek and slimline within applications such as architectural homes. There’s also that whole Australian lifestyle thing of indoor-outdoors. G lass is a product that comes very much into play to allow this.”

AFL “Football is something I’ve enjoyed playing for a long time and, although I can no longer commit to the sport, I certainly miss it and still follow it closely.”
