This week... From the editor The festive season can be a rollercoaster ride, or maybe more like dodgem cars: shopping, partying, dashing about to see people you only see once a year, bringing in the new year with a bang, and then resolving never again to celebrate with such gusto, before collapsing in front of the cricket. It can also be a contemplative time: what was good and bad, happy and sad, about the year that was. What we hope for in the year to come. This year, a job I’d had for 30 years came to an end, but a new job (here at the Weekly) began. With cake! I said goodbye to a brother-in-law, and welcomed a second grand-niece. I bought a car and a house. I waved my daughter off to uni, and held my breath as my son got his Ls. His braces came off, and what a smile! I went to Europe with my partner to see his daughter dance. His youngest is boldly following in her footsteps. I’m about to help my dad turn 90, which means my next birthday will be 50! My chook has stopped laying, but my tomato crop is outstanding. I have much to be grateful for. From the team at the Newcastle Weekly, I wish you joy and peace in the festive season, and look forward to your company in 2016. - Alysson Watson

and investigate the stories behind the statistics and so I coupled my desire to help with my passion for art and Start Talking was born. “Often, friends and families only have photographs of loved ones to remember them by, which is basically a frozen moment in time, but with the portraits, the artists work with the family to help to create a new memory and it can be a very healing process.”
The project involves an artist working with a family that has been affected by suicide to paint a portrait of their loved one for them to keep. The portrait is sponsored and put on exhibition to help raise awareness of the effects of suicide and raise funds for Lifeline Hunter and Central Coast’s suicide prevention programs. Now in its third year, in 2016 the program will partner with the portrait group from the Society of Artists Newcastle, and 15 families will be involved. As part of the initiative, artists undergo Lifeline’s Safe Talk training program before they work with a family, which boosts their awareness about suicide prevention and gives them strategies to help people cope. “The Safe Talk program is just fantastic and I would urge everyone to look into doing it because it really gives people an insight into what they can do for people who may be experiencing thoughts of suicide – it really is invaluable,” Ms Bowtell said. People who have lost a loved one to suicide and wish to be involved, or artists interested in submitting a portrait, can contact Kathie Bowtell on 0402 411 317 or email kathie.bowtell@walkom. com.au. If this story raises concerns for you, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14. - Stephen Bisset

The art of compassion unter artists are calling on people affected by suicide to take part in a project aimed at providing support and raising awareness of and funds for suicide prevention. Developed in 2013 by local portrait artist Kathie Bowtell, who had lost a grandfather and stepbrother to suicide, the initiative, dubbed Start Talking, aims to get people to engage in open and
Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Cessnock councils will continue to stand alone, but Newcastle will be forced to merge with Port Stephens under a shake-up of local government in NSW. Port Stephens mayor Bruce MacKenzie has criticised the decision, but Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said that, while preferring to stand alone, Newcastle would work co-operatively on
honest dialogue about suicide and break down some of the stigmas. “Suicide is something that affected me personally and it’s something that does happen a lot in the community,” Ms Bowtell told Newcastle Weekly. “I really wanted to do something to raise awareness so I contacted Lifeline. “I thought it would be great to be able to put a face to these people
the merger. Cr Nelmes said some communities would be better off, and there were benefits in combining the harbour, airport, Defence land and health land into one area. Both Cr MacKenzie and Cr Nelmes have indicated they will stand for re-election in 2017. Lake Macquarie mayor Jodie Harrison said it was a group effort that led to the council’s future as a
stand-alone organisation. “This decision is reflective of the hard work of many people and the regional leadership shown by councillors, staff and community leaders,” Cr Harrison said. Maitland City Council general manager David Evans said the council welcomed the announcement that it would not have to merge with Dungog. - Alysson Watson
Hunter residents contributed $111,564 as part of McHappy Day, which raised $3.6million for Ronald McDonald House Charities. The money is raised through McDonald restaurants. McDonalds Mayfield licensee Warwick Boyd said the fundraising total equated to 25,000 nights’ accommodation for families with seriously ill children in Ronald McDonald houses. 3

eing in hospital as a child can’t be easy, especially if it’s for a long period of time. During the festive season it’s just that much harder, but with the help of the Starlight Foundation, children at the John Hunter Hospital and their parents enjoyed some well deserved fun. On 17 December the Starlight Christmas party was held in the Starlight Room with special guests including the Knights, the Jets, Star Wars characters and some friendly critters from Hunter Valley Zoo. “It’s great seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces,” the Hunter Valley Zoo’s Jason Pearson said. “The captains put on a fantastic show. It’s just a great vibe.” The day was filled with laughter from parents and children; there were games and dance battles, as well as a Q&A with Chewbacca. Captain Starlight was the MC and said it was a wonderful time of year. “We have everything from Star Wars characters to lizards, there’s live music and Santa is here. It’s a really nice thing for the end of year. “Just looking around and seeing all the fun and laughter is a real testament to what the day stands for and how it’s able to make a difference”, Captain Starlight said. -Kayla Stephenson
Hunter Valley Zoo has a roaring new attraction, a family of lions that have moved in from Taronga Zoo. Bruiser (a 16-year-old male), Kuchani (his 14-year-old mate) and Asali (their 12-year-old daughter) moved into their purpose-built enclosure on 15 December, and were introduced to the public three days later. Visitors can see them daily during the school holidays from 9am to 4pm, except for Christmas

Where to see in the New Year
If you like your New Year’s celebrations with more of a Jurassic bent, then jive into Newcastle Museum, which will be hosting dinosaur-themed activities and other family-friendly fun, such as the interactive Tyrannosaurus exhibition and rare specimens of dinosaurs from around the world. The fun kicks off at 6pm and runs until 9pm and exhibition entry charges apply (see newcastlemuseum.com.au). In Lake Macquarie, Wangi RSL will be hosting a dazzling
fireworks display from 9pm. Port Stephens revellers can get along to a full day of New Year’s Eve fun at D’Albora Marina, Nelson Bay. From noon there will be live entertainment, roving kids’ entertainment from Little Puppet World, and face painting. Fireworks will light up the beautiful waterways from 9pm. Maitland’s Riverbank will play host to family fun from 5pm, including free carnival rides, face painting, craft, balloon sculpting, live music and, of course, a spectacular fireworks display at 9pm. There will also be a great range of food on offer from a variety of local eateries. Wollombi Tavern will be seeing in the new year with a free, family-friendly night of live music from the Hunter’s own Andy Cash and Manana as well as fireworks at 9pm. There will also be a coffee van on site, drinks flowing and free camping. And Hunter Valley Gardens will be further illuminated on New Year’s Eve with fireworks at 9pm. - Stephen Bisset
Funding boost keeps kids safe in the surf The surf safety of Hunter children, particularly those from rural and remote communities, is in good hands thanks to a $44,000 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation. The foundation presented the money to Hunter Surf Life Saving to fund their Surf Fun Safe program. Hunter SLS CEO Rhonda Scruton said the funding would keep the program going for the next 10 years. Hunter SLC provides the community education program to almost 10,000 primary-aged students from public, independent and Catholic schools each summer at Nobbys beach and in schools. The program is also available to overseas students at Newcastle University and TAFE, and to refugee groups who have no experience swimming at the beach.

The McLaughlin family in 2013 – David and Michelle, and their children Tom, Hugh and Sophie.
Be road safe in Tom’s memory olidays can be a dangerous time for children on roads, but there is one family trying to make it safer.
Michelle and David McLaughlin, who lost their son Tom in a roadside accident while on holidays in January 2014, have formed the Little
Blue Dinosaur Foundation. They have partnered with councils, including Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, for signage to be displayed that says “Holiday Time: Slow Down, Kids Around”. Following the success of a pilot program in Gosford last year, signage will appear in Newcastle at Nobby’s beach, Newcastle beach, King Edward Park, Bar Beach, Dixon Park, John Parade, and Merewether Baths, and in Lake Macquarie at Speers Point Park and Warners Bay. Mrs McLaughlin said children were particularly vulnerable because of their unpredictability. “Children are in a highly excitable state on holidays and with the population spike in these areas in holiday periods, particularly over the summer, the risk of accidents increases making it a dangerous time for children. - Alysson Watson
Miranda drops in
Supermodel Miranda Kerr caused a frenzy among Christmas shoppers at Westfield Kotara when she dropped in to promote her skin care range, KORA Organics, on December 20. The beauty, who separated from actor Orlando Bloom two years ago, is rumoured to be spending Christmas in the Hunter with son Flynn and extended family.
Hard year ends in a top place Merewether High student Imogen Lewis, who came out of her HSC legal studies exam thinking she had “stuffed it up”, has topped the state in the subject. The result is all the more special as 16-year-old Imogen, of New Lambton Heights, is in Year 11 and a year younger than most of her cohort – studying an accelerated course. And doubly so because she’s had a difficult year, losing her father and mentor Guy, a nuclear medicine physician, to pancreatic cancer in March and spending a week in hospital just before her exam. She had to have surgery after a bite from her cat Sasha, endured as she was rescuing her from a diamond python. But the star student and her black cat remain the best of friends. Imogen hopes to study law. Other first placers were Nikola Groves, St Francis Xavier 6

JAW-DROPPING WONDER
Left: JP Viens as Boum Boum. Photo: Camirand Below: Quidam's Spanish web act Photo: Matt Beard
When it comes to mesmeric feats of human skill realised in surreal wonderlands with endearing characters and engaging humour, nobody does it better than Cirque du Soleil. The Australian run of one of their best-loved shows, Quidam, promises to be no exception. ince debuting in Montreal, Canada, in 1996, Quidam has played to millions of people across five continents and has grown into a highly formidable production featuring 46 acrobats, musicians, singers and characters, wearing an astonishing 2500 costumes, 500 accessories and 200 pairs of shoes. Phew. Cast member JeanPhilippe Viens, who plays the overwhelming-yetmisunderstood character Boum Boum, told Newcastle Weekly that, despite the tyranny of distance and the scheduling headaches that entails, he and the rest of the production couldn’t wait to begin their Australian run in Canberra last week. “We arrived in Canberra on Saturday and I’m still trying to get rid of this nasty jet lag,” he laughed. “However, we always have such fun in Australia and, when I left Canada it was 16 degrees and here you are having wonderful 30-degree days – I just may never go home.” Quidam is a nameless passer-by in an anonymous society. This stranger is represented as an invisible being, dressed in a trench coat and holding an umbrella. The premise for the show is the imagination of young Zoe, a neglected child who retreats into the world of the extraordinary featuring aerial contortionists, Spanish webs, 12
aerial hoops, jugglers, hand balancers and much more. For Viens, Quidam cuts to the heart of what Cirque du Soleil is all about. “For me, Quidam is a great realisation of the whole philosophy of Cirque,” he said. “It is circus, however not what people would think of as a traditional circus. It’s acrobatic wonderment. I mean, the vertical ropes have to be seen to be believed. It’s about live music – we have some truly fantastic musicians with us – and it’s also a little bit of theatre. “At its heart, though, it’s a show about people. As you get into it, you realise that all of the characters are human and have human personalities. The story is basically about society. For Viens, who joined the Quidam Spanish Web team in 2010 before taking on the role of Boum Boum, the level of endurance and fitness needed for a show like this means he never truly stops preparing. “You really do have to look after yourself,” he said. “We just came back from a break after twoand-a-half months in South Korea – we were given about a month off to put the feet up and heal the muscles before we started it all again – and that’s kind of the cycle, so we’re all kind of used to it. The toughest part of preparing is definitely fighting off that nasty jet lag.” - Quidam by Cirque Du Soleil – Newcastle Entertainment Centre – Friday 15 January to Sunday 24 January. KARISE BARES HER SOUL ot on the heels of a hugely successful “return-tothe-spotlight” tour, the inaugural winner of The Voice, Karise Eden, is gearing up for another solid run of dates, taking her through to the end of February. This time around, though, it will be a more stripped-back affair. Dubbed the Summer Soul tour, the shows will see Eden performing in acoustic trio mode, belting out soulful renditions of some of her favourite songs and she told Newcastle Weekly that preparations had already begun. “Singing soul stuff, it can be helpful to get angry,” she laughed.
Karise Eden will perform at Lizotte’s on 2-3 January
“But really, it can be quite a workout so, it’s important to have a strong core so I have been doing things like push-ups because you don’t want to burn yourself out halfway through the tour. This one, though, will be pretty cruisy – there’ll

PEACH AND RASPBERRY PAVLOVA Serves 10
6 eggs, separated 360g caster sugar 1 tsp white wine vinegar 2 tsp cornflour (cornstarch) A few drops of natural vanilla essence 375g mascarpone 200ml of pure cream (35% fat), lightly whipped 2-3 drops rosewater (optional) 3 Tbsp icing sugar 1 vanilla bean 300g raspberries 100g blackcurrants 50g sugar 1 Tbsp water 250ml lemon curd 2 peaches 100g blueberries or silvanberries, or both Preheat the oven to 160°C. Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form, then whisk in the sugar, then the vinegar, cornflour and vanilla essence. The mixture should be stiff by now. Tip onto a baking tray lined with baking paper and use a spatula to form a steepsided round, 6cm high and 25cm diameter. Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce the oven to 140°C and bake for about 90 minutes, checking that it doesn’t brown too much – if at all – and turning down the oven further as need be. Allow to cool in the turned-off oven (some modern ovens may need to be wedged open so the meringue doesn’t sweat). Recipes and images from Summer on Fat Pig Farm by Matthew Evans, $49.99, Murdoch Books.
SWEET, SWEET SUMMER Nothing says summer entertaining like pavlova. The delicious mix of meringue, cream and fruit is the ideal end to any get together in the festive season – from Christmas, through New Year, to Australia Day. Whether you go fancy like Matthew Evans has in this recipe, or buy a base, whip some cream and slice some mango, banana and strawberries on top, who can resist a slice of pav on a hot summer’s day. 22
Combine the mascarpone, cream, rosewater (if using), icing sugar and seeds scraped from the vanilla bean. Stir well, taking care not to over whip, or the mixture will split. Heat half the raspberries over gentle heat to break them down to a sauce. Allow to cool and stir, in one or two quick motions, into the mascarpone mixture so it’s kind of rippled. Heat the blackcurrants with the sugar and water in a small saucepan over high heat to melt and soften. When fruit is soft, press through a sieve and discard solids. Spread lemon curd over the top of the pav, cover with the mascarpone mixture, then garnish with sliced peaches, the remaining raspberries and the blueberries and silvanberries if you have them. Drizzle on the blackcurrant syrup to serve.

PICK OF THE WEEK The Railway Man Sunday, ONE, 8.30pm, M (2013) With top-notch performances from its two Oscar-winning leads and a compelling and inspirational true story to tell, this is a rewarding watch. When Patricia (Nicole Kidman) meets Eric (Colin Firth) on a train, they fall in love and marry, but it quickly becomes apparent Eric’s calm and bookish exterior hides a tormented past. Told in two intricate parts, the story swings between present-day 1980 and flashbacks from a Japanese Army POW camp. A polished and sentimental journey about love and forgiveness.

Sunday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2002) Washington DC, 2054. Murder has become a thing of the past thanks to the hard-working John Anderton (Tom Cruise, right) and the premonitions of three psychics. But when Anderton himself is forseen to kill a total stranger in less than 36 hours, he resists arrest and sets out to clear his name of murder. Yet another reworking of a Philip K. Dick short story, the addition of Steven Spielberg behind the camera and Cruise living up to his A-list status means this psychological thriller gets full marks.
Thursday, GO!, 8pm, PG (2013) This delightfully whimsical Aussie rom-com – or musical parody – sees bored housewife Elspeth (Laura Michelle Kelly, left, who also starred in the West End musical) install a webcam in her kitchen sink so she can sing to her heart’s content while her whale-saving husband (a pleasing Ronan Keating) is away. When she is offered the chance to become the face of a laptop company by an ad executive (Magda Szubanski), Elspeth must choose between family or fame. Full of comical tunes, it’s topped with endearing performances.

2016 is Liam’s time to shine as the world is his oyster; he’ll be flourishing by trusting his instincts. The ideas he sows in February will pay off later in the year; by September life will truly be progressing in the right direction. On the love front, Liam needs to aim for a work/play balance. He needs to be careful of letting his sensitive side create misunderstandings with loved ones.

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
The 25 December Full Moon sextiles oppose Pluto, indicating that you and your partner need to review the way you both deal with money as longterm financial issues will now be coming to a head. There may be some injustice involving a business partner or someone who owes you money.
The 25 December Full Moon opposes Pluto indicating that ignoring problems won’t make them go away; people who you love dearly may be using you as a support when they really should be standing on their own two feet. Be careful of allowing yourself to be taken advantage of.
The Full Moon on the 25th indicates that you long for freedom, for the perfect life and the chance to be yourself. However, the reality is that life is full of boring responsibilities. With nostalgic stars blazing brightly, you will be spending time revisiting the past.
The Full Moon on 25 December indicates that if your health has been troubling you then it's time to get the problem sorted out once and for all! Also it’s time to call a halt to any activity that isn't bringing you sufficient rewards or satisfaction.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
The Full Moon on the 25th squares Neptune and indicates a need to watch your spending as it will be all too easy to go overboard. Focus on working out strategies for your goals in 2016; be clear about what you want, get organised and tie up any loose ends.
The Full Moon on the 25th opposes Pluto indicating that you may have to put up with some flak from the family. There are likely to be muddles and misunderstandings all around, or they may simply be in a tense and tetchy frame of mind.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
The 25 December Full Moon indicates that financial issues will be coming to a head and it’s important for you to take decisive action to sort matters out once and for all. Channel your enthusiasm into a project at work or release your inner clean freak at home.
Obstacles that irritated you for some time will be swept away. The Full Moon on the 25th indicates that you will be champing at the bit to indulge in your own fun activities; however your family especially your children will want you to concentrate on their needs instead.
When the Full Moon falls in your sign on 25 December you must not drink and drive or have too much alcohol in the company of strangers because to do so will create a regrettable impression. Project competence as an unexpected breakthrough will lead to a fantastic career opportunity.
The Full Moon on 25 December indicates you might be feeling discouraged by the sheer volume of tasks ahead; console yourself by knowing that time and determination will solve all these issues. Focus on feeling your best, add summery salads to your diet and you'll feel a welcome boost.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
The Full Moon on 25 December is in your eighth house and warns you to be careful of being a little too blunt with loved ones! Uranus is poised to make your relationship and career thrive while Saturn is forcing you to get your finances and health into order.
The 25 December Full Moon indicates that an upheaval will require a serious and responsible outlook when dealing with your finances, security and all those things you hold dear. Your inventive thinking will impress the right people, so stop doubting yourself.

GIANT BUGS ATTACK GARDENS Hunter Valley Gardens will be invaded by big bugs again this January with the return of Mega Creatures. But there’s no need to call the pest man – the bugs are friendly to plants and people. They especially like children. The Mega Creatures display features 20 animatronic creepy crawlies – yes, they come to life – including snails, spiders and grasshoppers. There’d be no show without T-Rex, and a Stegosaurus will also join the
garden party. Mega Creatures will be in residence at the Gardens from 2-26 January, and you can hang out with them from 9am-4pm, or 6.30-10pm daily. Day entry is $28 adults, $17 children, $80 family (2 adults, 2 kids). Night entry (including entry to the Christmas lights) is $27, $22 and $85. Day/ night passes are $48, $24 and $134. To find out more visit hvg.com.au or phone 4998 4000.
Newcastle Weekly has two day/night family passes valued at $134 each to give away to readers. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly.com.au with “Mega Creatures” in the subject field. Tell us your name, contact details and tell us your favourite bug. Entries close and winners will be drawn at 9am on Monday 11 January. One entry per person. Permit No. LTPM/15/00427.

If you aren’t familiar with the Detectorists DVD series, think The IT Crowd and The Office. Mackenzie Crook, the unforgettable Gareth Keenan in The Office, wrote, directed and starred in this award-winning comedy about the eccentric lives of two friends Andy (Mackenzie Crook) and Lance (Toby Jones). Members of a metal detecting club, they share a dream to strike gold and find the final resting place of King Sexred. But while they search for the past they must also grapple with the
present. Also stars Snow White and the Huntsman actors Rachael Stirling (also in The Young Victoria) and Toby Jones (also in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire). Series 1 is out now, and Series 2 comes out in February.
Enter to WIN Newcastle Weekly has 10 copies of the Detectorists DVD Series 1 to give away to readers. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly.com.au with “Detectorists” in the subject field. Tell us your name, full contact details and tell us the name of the king whose resting place the pair are looking for. Entries close and winners drawn at 9am on Monday 11 January. SOMETHING WITH STRINGS I tried to take a “holiday” once. I travelled to New Zealand without a guitar, thinking I’d have a couple of weeks off playing. On the third day, I was so frustrated that I bought a ukulele and have never travelled without an instrument since.
My favourite things
MY PHONE
Not to make calls or send emails. I like it best in Airplane Mode. I use it as a means of recording song ideas – lyrics in the notepad and musical ideas in the voice memos. There is nothing worse than wondering what that “great idea” you had was.
MY NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES Sitting on planes, tour buses, vans and cars can get very monotonous but I just turn these things on, put on some tunes or an audiobook, close my eyes and I can be anywhere I want to be.

Morgan Evans SINGER/SONGWRITER, TELEVISION PRESENTER
Since first stepping on stage with Newcastle outfit Solver in the early noughties, Morgan Evans has gone from strength to strength. With three EPs and one album under his belt, Morgan has toured with the likes of Taylor Swift and Alan Jackson, graced such iconic stages as Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry and taken out multiple CMC awards. He has also recently stepped into the world of television, presenting the Rollin With… show on Foxtel’s Country Music Channel – a role that nabbed him ASTRA and TV Week Logie awards nominations in 2015. “After two years on the road and in the air, I’ve learnt to pack light, but there are some things I can’t live without and some things about Newcastle that I miss dearly when I’m away,” Morgan said
THE OCEAN This is the first place I go every time I come back to Australia. It’s like hitting the reset button for me and it’s the thing I miss most when I’m away. I’m in there every day when I’m home, if the waves are there or not. Unless there are sharks around – if there are sharks around I’ll let `em have it.
MEXICAN FOOD
TEQUILA
I have always had a pretty healthy addiction to corn chips and salsa but, after spending so much time in the US, I have grown very fond of most Mexican-style cooking. From tamales to tacos to tequila, I try to recreate it as best I can in the kitchen at home, too.
For the good times! Casamigos Reposado would be my pick to drink straight up and the Blanco for cocktails, but just about anything 100% Agave will do the trick.
