This week... From the editor What a joy it is to welcome Judy Sharpe to the Newcastle Weekly team! Although she rejects the title, Judy is undoubtedly Newcastle’s garden guru, a sought-after nursery owner and trusted gardening adviser. As I drive past, I still admire the garden Judy helped me create for a previous home in New Lambton 15 years ago. I wanted a fuss-free front yard, to impress, and a busy-bee back yard where the children could get their hands dirty. From the street you can’t miss the mop-top robinias, iceberg roses, gardenias and plumbago, and over the house peep lilly-pillies and blue conifers. I hope the lemon-scented tea trees, olives and big vegie patch are still there, and the “troll” bridge the kids used to stomp on. We went through a purple vegie phase at that house, growing purple power foods for a friend with cancer. Gardening is a passion for so many of us, sometimes passed down through the generations. My dad, the son of a farmer, fed our entire suburb from our half-acre block, and still grows magnificent roses. Mum loves her potted colour. For others new to gardening, it’s about reducing food miles and improving health. During the recent salmonella salad scare it was a relief to be able to pick ours from the front yard. Enjoy Judy’s column on page 17. - Alysson Watson

Intern Dr Joel Wenitong at John Hunter Hospital. Photo: Jamie Wicks

Joel is helping to close the gap hen Joel Wenitong left school he chose to follow in his teacher mother’s footsteps instead of his doctor father’s “because he had too much work to do”. Now, 20 years later, the Raymond Terrace father of four is a new doctor at the John Hunter Hospital and part of the success story of Indigenous employment by Hunter New England Health. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders make up 4.7% of Hunter health employees, well ahead of the state benchmark of 2.6%, and close to the population level of 6%. “Aboriginal employment enhances our

workforce diversity and so improves the services we deliver,” Aboriginal Employment Workforce Manager Julie Smith said. Joel, a Kabi Kabi man, agrees more Indigenous staff will improve Indigenous health. “To see a face they recognise, and have someone asking them if they need help, makes the hospital so much friendlier, and makes people more confident to come back,” he said. “We all wear an Aboriginal flag on our ID, but they get to know our faces. “As a patient or a family member, when someone goes out of their way and gives you permission to talk to them, I see that as a really big thing.”

Young female drinkers risk depression One in six young Australian women have been classified as “extremely frequent” binge drinkers and may be increasing their risk of depression, according to new research from the University of Newcastle. Jennifer Powers, from the Research Centre for Generational Health and Ageing, said her findings provide further evidence of the need for new prevention strategies to curb binge drinking in adolescence. The research was based on data reported by more than 8,000 women from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health. The study identified five binge drinking patterns between the ages of 16 and 21. Ms Powers said 16% of women reported having five or more drinks per session extremely frequently – usually more than once a week. 4

“The women in this binge drinking category were at elevated risk of depressive symptoms in both the short-term of one to six years, and the long-term of 10 to 15 years,” Ms Powers said. “These findings suggest that there is a lasting impact of heavy drinking on mental health and that there is a threshold where the risk of depression not only increases but is sustained over time.” To investigate whether binge drinking preceded depression, researchers excluded data from women who reported symptoms of depression at baseline, but Ms Powers said it is clear the relationship is complex. “Further research is needed to investigate whether poor mental health leads to binge drinking, or whether there could be a two-way relationship,” she said.

As a surgical intern, Joel’s workload is pretty full. But, although he’s no longer teaching in schools, he’s determined to continue as a casual academic at Newcastle University’s Wollotuka Institute, make films with his wife, Costa Rica-born Adriana Rios, under their BlackChili Productions label, and perform with his sister Naomi in award-winning indigenous hip-hop band The Last Kinection. A medical pedigree (his grandmother, nurse Lorna Wenitong, was one of the first Aboriginal health workers in Queensland), a serious car accident in 2009, and encouragement from Wollotuka colleagues led Joel to enrol in medicine. “I was working in the hearing program in schools, where health and education meet,” he said. “It seemed a natural thing to move into medicine.” He took a year off mid-degree to do a research project on what defines Aboriginal culture, and says the elements he distilled from Moree elders – forced loss of culture, connection to community, family and people, spirituality, and humour – will stand him in good stead for medical practice. Joel hopes to practise as a GP in a rural or remote location. “It’s up to the wife and kids where we buy a farm,” he said. “We thought we might go back to Queensland, to Cairns, but they’ve found one they like at Paterson, so we’ll see.” - Alysson Watson

Right royal welcome Hundreds of onlookers welcomed and then farewelled the Queen Elizabeth on her maiden visit to Newcastle Harbour on Monday. With 1,956 passengers and 989 crew, the stately Cunard vessel’s visit was a highlight of the cruise season, which injects $11 million into the Hunter economy annually, port CEO Geoff Crowe said.

Bogey Hole remains closed Newcastle’s iconic Bogey Hole remains closed, while the NSW Department of Primary Industries waits for a geotechnical engineering report. The convict-built coastal swimming pool was closed in December because of Newcastle City Council concerns about the stability of the cliff edge above. The public is warned not to enter.

All aboard for Steamfest hat started out in 1986 as a little festival run by volunteers has gone on to become one of the highlights of the Maitland events calendar. Steamfest – the annual celebration of the golden age of rail – will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year and Maitland City Council’s events coordinator, Adam Franks, told Newcastle Weekly it would be the biggest and best yet. A major drawcard will be a Top Gear-style race between four locomotives, running side-by-side on parallel tracks, and four Tiger Moth aeroplanes. “It really is quite exciting because it will be the first time, we believe, something like this has been done,” Mr Franks said. “There has been a lot of planning gone into this but it’s definitely

going to be quite a spectacle.” Entertainment across the 9-10 April weekend includes engines, antique machinery, more than 600 cars in Sunday’s Show ‘n’ Shine, live music, kids’ activities, and 100 food and market stalls. Mr Franks said volunteers were still the lifeblood of the event. “We require volunteers across a range of roles, from selling tickets to helping people on trains, and we strongly encourage anyone interested to get in contact.” Steamfest takes place next to Maitland station. Train journey tickets are now on sale at steamfest.com. au, 4931 2877, or Maitland Visitor Information Centre. For volunteering information visit steamfest.com.au/get-involved - Stephen Bisset

Have your say on council amalgamations Residents have until 28 February to lodge submissions on proposed council amalgamations in NSW. Local Government NSW president and Coffs Harbour councillor Keith Rhoades said it was essential that communities that would be impacted by amalgamation decisions were heard, loud and clear. ‘It’s becoming clearer than ever that lodging a written submission is a critical way to ensure your community’s voice is heard,” Cr Rhoades said. “Local Government NSW has received decidedly mixed reviews from its members about the public inquiries into proposed council amalgamations conducted by government-appointed delegates. That’s why it is critical for people from all affected communities to lodge a written submission before the cut-off date of 28 February.” A guide and template on drafting a submission can be found at lgnsw.org.au/key-initiatives/reform-fit-for-the-future#public-inquiry

Happy birthday, leaplings! alle Clemente, of Cardiff South, will celebrate her second birthday on Monday, even though she was born eight years ago. Her 29 February birthday only comes around every four years, so it’s cause for celebration. Born six weeks early, Halle was determined to be a “leapling”, her mother Allira said. Despite Monday’s date, the family will celebrate on Sunday 28 February, as they usually do, so relatives from Sydney can join in. Halle has another leapling in her family, a cousin, and her grandfather’s birthday is March 1. Allira said Halle loves dancing, gymnastics, shopping and make-up – “all the girly things” – and was hoping for something along those lines for her birthday. Vanuatu girls in Surfest Eleebana’s Stewart and Bronwyn Free will have a full house this week as they accommodate young surfers from Vanuatu taking part in the Surfest High Schools Team Challenge. The couple, who have supported the Vanuatu Surfing Association to bring boys out to Surfest for several years, will this year welcome three girls, Marine Cugolo, 15, Charly Donchos, 11 and Serah John, 18. The association rewards school attendance through surfing. It sends high-performance surfers to the Melanesian Cup, but Surfest is an outreach program for kids who would not get to travel. “To be eligible, you have to be a good kid, and be put up by the community leaders as someone suitable,” Stewart said. “Some of these kids have never been out of their village, so their time in Newcastle is a whole lot of ‘firsts’.” Serah’s grandmother, the late Katleen John, from Pango village, is known as the “grandmother of surfing” in Vanuatu, hosting travelling surfers and encouraging the sport among locals. 8

Researchers deliver greater clarity Three University of Newcastle biologists have hand-built a state-of-the-art laser microscope that delivers clear 3D cellular images with unparalleled speed and precision. Compared to commercial versions that cost up to $1 million, Jamie Flynn, Antony Martin and Will Palmer assembled their device for $70,000 at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), using plans, parts and technical advice from the internet and collaborators around the world. Known as the “Clarity light sheet”, it was built for HMRI researchers to use in studies on cancer, asthma, stroke, gastroenterology and reproduction.

“A traditional microscope looks at a thin veneer that has been sliced off the original sample,” Antony said. “We can now see the same microscopic level of detail in the whole 3D sample, plus we can rotate it, which is impossible on standard microscopes. “It’s also much faster, which saves money.” Jamie learnt the technology during a lecture at Stanford University, California, then joined an international community of scientists sharing the information. Joint funding was provided by HMRI life governor Jennie Thomas and the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation.

Dane’s display a double-edged sword for Jets he Newcastle Jets have a new hero in Morten Nordstrand, but the question now is can they – or will they – keep him. The Danish striker, who was signed on a short-term deal in January, set Hunter Stadium alight on Saturday with a stylish double in the 3-2 win over Wellington. For long-suffering Jets fans, he looks to be that player of genuine class who can help the club close the gap between them and the genuine title contenders. And, coming with the nickname of Nobby, it appears the perfect match. But with the wounds from the David Carney transfer wrangle still weeping, we are reminded that nothing is ever easy at the Jets. When Nordstrand was signed until the end of the season, coach

Scott Miller described it as a “sensible business decision”. “To make massive financial commitments now would be inappropriate, so that’s why I appreciate his effort now coming out short-term to prove himself,” Miller said. “And if all goes well, we might see Morten here longer.” Nordstrand has stated his case but, as interim CEO David Eland made clear when Sydney stole Carney, the Jets won’t be dictated to when it comes to player negotiations. “The club now has a very firm recruitment and retention strategy, and we are in the process of implementing that,” Eland said. “When the coaching staff are ready to open up negotiations with David or any other player that’s coming off contract, they will do that, but it is a very measured approach

which is about ensuring that the team maintains performance and is harmonious.” The ongoing uncertainty over the Jets ownership is another complication. Nordstrand may have taken his opportunity too well for the Jets. With other cashed-up A-League and Asian clubs ready to pounce, Newcastle can expect a bit more competition for his signature next time. • It seems the more things change at the Knights, the more they stay the same. Newcastle were steamrolled by Canberra in their only full dress rehearsal for the new season, conceding 34 unanswered points in the first half hour on Saturday night before losing 34-28. “Newcastle’s issue over the past 10 or 12 years has been defence, and tonight our issue was defence,”

AHEAD OF THE GAME KEVIN CRANSON

Nathan Brown noted. “And we’ve got to pick players who have got an attitude to want to do it.” Now we look forward to seeing how the new coach addresses that problem. HIT... Morten Nordstrand … wow. A player to put bums on seats – and get them up out of them cheering. MISS... Player manager Jim Banaghan carrying on like a pork chop as the Knights played hardball over Joseph Tapine. Next time a player signs for a rival club a year out and expects an immediate release with no compensation for the Knights, I’m sure Matt Gidley will help pack his bags. sport@newcastleweekly.com.au

AN AUSSIE LOVE AFFAIR hen Irish troubadour Luka Bloom woke up in his house in County Clare last Easter Sunday, he found himself pining for a different part of the world. “I was supposed to tour Australia in 2015, which didn’t materialise, and I found myself waking up on Easter Sunday and the first thought I had was ‘I really want to be in Byron Bay’,” he said. “I would have been playing Bluesfest on that tour and, at that moment, I couldn’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be. In all honesty that was the first time in my life that I had genuinely missed a place that wasn’t Ireland.” Bloom put pen to paper and wrote a love letter to the Antipodes, Australia, that appears on his soon-to-be-released 21st studio album Frugalisto, which has its international debut when Bloom begins his 12th Australian tour next week. “I jokingly refer to that song as my little revenge on Australia for all the sentimental songs you guys sing about Ireland. I’m redressing the balance a bit,” he laughed. Growing up in Country Kildare, Ireland, Barry Moore – the brother of seminal Irish folk 14

singer Christy Moore – cut his musical teeth performing, often with his brother, in folk clubs throughout England, before releasing his debut album Treaty Stone in 1978. Wanderlust got the better of Moore and he relocated to the US in 1987, taking on the name Luka Bloom (Luka from the Suzanne Vega song of the same name, and Bloom, the protagonist in James Joyce’s epic Ulysses). Throughout the course of 21 albums the unassuming songwriter has become widely regarded as one of his homeland’s most revered contemporary folk artists. Despite having been at this songwriting lark for some time now, Bloom said he was under no illusions of grandeur. The adage ‘you’re only as good as your last record’ definitely rings true. “I think that there is enough music in the world that If I never wrote another song or released another album it would make absolutely no difference whatsoever. So it has to remain fresh to me and I need to be challenged because I think I owe it to the audience.” Bloom’s love affair with Australia began in 1992 after touring here for the first time on the back of his third album The Acoustic Motorbike,

which contained his sultry version of LL Cool J’s I Need Love. And the love is still as strong as ever. “I felt a real connection to Australia my first time down there and I made a promise to myself that I would always try and maintain that connection,” he said. “And now, here I am on tour number 12 of my lucky land, and I’m extremely grateful that I’m still welcomed with open arms in your country. It’s a real blessing.” - Stephen Bisset

How to care for your citrus Growing citrus has become extremely popular, perhaps because of the price of lemons and limes. here is also an upsurge in citrus planting in containers and raised beds, as a result of smaller gardens and apartment living. Hence care needs to be taken in cultivation. Certain varieties of citrus – Tahitian limes and Eureka lemons – produce fruit readily in coastal areas. Meyer lemons and Kaffir limes do well there, too, as will oranges and mandarins, but they’ll produce sweeter fruit in cooler

situations. I have a customer who overcomes this problem by surrounding the trunk of the orange with ice cubes! If you want sweet oranges, it’s worth the effort. Citrus should be grown in full sun and, as they have shallow roots, planting too close to the trunk can cause collar rot, as will mulch or manure piled up around the base of the trunk. Other plants will compete for water, so keep the lawn well back from the trunk.

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

Citrus grown in containers should be given a reasonable size pot and a good potting mix. They should never be fertilised with citrus food. Feed in March and August with a slow release product such as Bounce Back and use regular application of Searles Flourish Fruit Booster.

THIS WEEK... in

Autumn is the perfect time to plant cool-season vegies and it’s also the time when many plants get a second wind and put on a fresh flush of leaves and flowers. It is important to feed your garden in autumn, to support new growth and keep it productive. Yates is Australia’s leader in gardening products and advice. If you are looking for more inspiration tips and advice, you can join Yates Garden Club free at yates.com.au/garden-club

• Prepare to plant winter vegetables – cabbages, Brussel sprouts, spinach and cauliflower. Dig poultry manure into beds with blood and bone or an all-purpose vegie fertiliser and leave a week before planting. • Check agapanthus and houseplants for attack by mealy bug that love the humidity – spray with Antiscale. • Brown patches in lawn may not be army grub but a fungal invasion that can be treated with Mancozeb. • Roses, crepe myrtles and hydrangea are being hit by powdery mildew. Treat this whitish effect with copper oxychloride. editorial@newcastleweekly.com.au

Little or no pruning is required for citrus, apart from extra-long shoots being cut back to the canopy line. Dead or damaged wood should be removed. Leaf miner is a problem, and can be discouraged by pruning off the soft new growth that this pest loves. Leaf miner appears as a tracing and curling growth in January and February. There are many pest oil products that are good preventatives, the latest being Searles Ecofend. Other insects, scales and stink bugs can be sprayed with Antiscale or Malathion with white oil. Fertilising should be done in March and August. Ground-grown trees should be fed with poultry manure out under the drip line, watered before application and after. Two to three weeks later apply citrus fertiliser following the same watering instructions.

PICK OF THE WEEK Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Friday, SBS, 9.30pm, M (2000) The smash-hit romantic martial arts epic from director Ang Lee is not to be missed. Part tragedy, part comedy and part love story, the screenplay follows a legendary martial arts master (Chow YunFat, pictured left) who hopes that by presenting his famed “Green Destiny” sword to the local governor he can retire and act on his feelings for a fellow warrior (Michelle Yeoh). But when the blade is stolen, his plans go awry. Lee’s heroes are granted super-human abilities as they bounce off water and do battle for the blade in the bamboo treetops.

Shark Tale Sunday, GO!, 6.30pm, G (2004) The makers of Shrek head to the ocean to deliver some top laughs in a fishy tale that pokes fun at mobster films. Will Smith voices Oscar (above), a little fish who becomes a celebrity when he falsely earns the reputation of shark slayer. Boss shark Don Lino (Robert De Niro) vows revenge on him. Completing a top-drawer voice cast are Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and Renee Zellweger. As with Shrek, the jokes, in-jokes, puns and movie parodies come thick and fast and provide many laugh-outloud moments. One for all the family to enjoy.

Saturday, SBS, 8.30pm, M (2007) The trend of pregnancy-themed comedies continued with this smartmouthed bundle of cinematic joy from director Jason Reitman (Up in the Air). When 16-year-old Juno McGuff (Ellen Page, Whip It, right) enlists her best friend Paulie (Arrested Development’s Michael Cera) to become her first sexual partner, little does she consider the outcome. Pregnant, Juno decides to offer the baby up for adoption – the prospective parents are the Lorings, wonderfully portrayed by Jennifer Garner and Cera’s Arrested dad Jason Bateman.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22

The pace of life may be hectic as there will be several deadlines to be met all at once. On the home front it will require thoughtful effort to sort out challenging family issues. An important event with a younger member of the family will be an emotional high point.

It's a shoulder to the wheel time on the work front and the more efficient you are the better you are going to look to your colleagues and clients. Be certain to use attention to detail when handling tricky paperwork matters. Remain meticulous.

opportunities to get to know relatives and friends better and allow you to cultivate new contacts and broaden your network. Thoughtful gestures and kind favours from loved ones will mean the world to you; fun plans with your children and loved ones will build your relationships.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

If you are footloose and fancy free it’s time to get where the action is, as you are exuding mystery and sex appeal, so why not make the most of it. On a social level you will be mixing with people who come from very different backgrounds.

An ambitious enterprise will be an adventure, and it’ll set a new benchmark for you. At work, an opportunity to make your mark in a dynamic way will push you to the max. Planning for the future could slip into overdrive, set clear goals, but leave space for unexpected developments.

Don't let anxieties and jealous behaviour get out of control. The more tightly you hold onto a loved one, the more likely they are to long for freedom. The Sun is in the romantic sign of Pisces, so be certain to indulge this heart-ruled period with a feel-good movie.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Your love life goes into overdrive and your feelings for your loved one are especially intense. You won’t feel like doing anything unless it involves the two of you. A change of scene will provide a refreshing break and could leave you both feeling closer than ever!

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23 A large outlay on your home and family will put a dint in your savings and you’ll have to juggle your money carefully to take the pressure off. Consult your partner before making any radical changes to your home. Even if you think they won't mind, they may have strong opinions!

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23 Social treats galore will be

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21 Your ability to assert yourself is evident as you direct a great deal of energy towards achieving success. Your confidence is high and you know that you have nothing to lose by going for what you want. Romantically this means that you are inclined to initiate encounters.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20 The opportunity to shift a relationship with a sibling onto a warmer footing will set up a new chapter, while closure with a drawnout problem with another will ease pent-up feelings. You're usually the stronger force in any conflict, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't compromise.

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19 Enough with the fluff! You're feeling the need to stimulate your intellectual side. Rent something challenging, like a well-regarded foreign film, and after, spend some time discussing it. A sibling is likely to act as a guardian angel this month stepping in to help you out of a tricky situation.

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 Jupiter in Virgo puts magic in your romantic sector and your attraction to your partner has escalated to new levels. Many of you will be tying the knot or adding a new addition to your family. For singles, a new attraction could sweep you off your feet!

EAT LESS, LIVE LONG

THE DRESSMAKER DVD

According to author Jason Shon Bennett, we live in a world where we never stop eating and consume the worst kinds of food, resulting in extreme numbers of sick people suffering a variety of health issues. Eat Less, Live Long is a guide for people who want to get healthy, but don’t know how. Jason shares his years of personal experience and extensive research into the world’s healthiest diets, the medicinal properties of foods, and the practice of regular fasting. Through applying these learnings, Jason transformed his health and hasn’t been sick for over 20 years. His books Eat Less, Live Long and My 20 Golden Rules, are available at book stores and online at jasonshonbennett.com

The highly acclaimed The Dressmaker is a bittersweet comedydrama about a glamorous seamstress, Tilly Dunnage, returning to her rural home town in the wheat belt of Australia in 1951 to right her wrongs. Based on the namesake novel by Rosalie Ham, The Dressmaker is a touching love story between man and woman, past and present, forgiving and forgetting. It stars Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth, Hugo Weaving and Sarah Snook, and is released on 25 February by Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

MEREWETHER BEACH “I love going down to the beach or, more specifically, the Merewether Baths for a dip on a hot day. There’s nothing better than that.”

My favourite things SOCCER “I think you could say that it’s what got me into journalism. I’ve always been big into soccer and, well, sport in general. Being able to turn a passion into a much bigger and better thing, I had the opportunity to attend the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa reporting for SBS.”

INDIAN FOOD “Until recently I hadn’t even tried it! Now I love it. There’s this place down in Warners Bay called Bay of India that is my favourite – best Indian in Newcastle. As I am moving, I think I would drive all the way back from Sydney just to get take away.”

Michael Cain TELEVISION REPORTER

Michael Cain was a carpet layer till the age of 36 when he moved into sports journalism, writing part-time for The Post newspaper and hosting a soccer show on 2NUR-FM. His break came with SBS’s flagship program The World Game, and in 2010 he was part of the station’s World Cup soccer coverage from South Africa. He had stints reporting for Prime7 in Wagga Wagga and NBN in Tamworth and the Central Coast before returning to Newcastle as an NBN news reporter. Last month he relocated to Sydney to work as a reporter/presenter with Ten’s Eyewitness News.

MY JOB “I was a carpet layer for 20 years and didn’t go to university. I had decided to do a presenting course; one thing led to another and now I’ve been a TV journalist for almost six years. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I’d be reporting sport and news. I’ve hit the jackpot, being lucky to love my job.”

MATES AND OVER-35s SOCCER “As I was a carpet layer for 20 years my knees are stuffed up, so, while I can’t play, I love going to watch my mates play, and enjoy a couple of cold ones after. I think it’s important for men to have that sense of comradery. I’m a big advocate for mental health and a lot of men struggle with it because they don’t feel they can speak up, so spending time around mates is important.”
