From the editor This week we are launching our Christmas toy appeal (see story on page 9) in support of child protection charity, Barnardos Australia. We are proud to highlight the fantastic work Barnardos does in providing services such as finding foster carers and helping families with children who may be going through troubling times. They’ve been around for more than 130 years and their mission statement is to be commended: ‘Barnardos Australia builds relationships between children, young people, their families and the community. It advocates for children and young people and contributes to community knowledge about their issues.’ Gifts of any size and shape will be accepted. We completely understand that household finances take a bit of a hit around this time of year and that there might not be a lot left over to give to charity. Donations need to be received at our office at 19 Pearson St, Charlestown by Tuesday 15 December. This will give enough time for Barnardos to distribute the gifts to families in time for Christmas. Please leave the gifts unwrapped to help Barnardos staff match the toys to the children in their care. - Paul Monforte

A new campaign highlights the array of family-friendly activities on offer in the Hunter Valley.

Hunter residents called on to help with tourism campaign he Hunter Valley Wine & Tourism Association (HVWTA) has partnered with Singleton Council in a digital marketing campaign aimed at attracting the ‘short break’

family market to the region. Titled Come Play, the campaign, which captures an array of child-friendly activities seen through the eyes of young children, will

target Sydney, Newcastle, Port Stephens and the Greater Hunter Region audiences with a mix of tactical display advertisements, seeded video and social media. Locals are being asked to help spread the word by liking and sharing the Hunter Valley Wine Country Facebook page, on which the campaign video and all content can be viewed. HVWTA chairman, George Souris said it was important to highlight the extensive variety of activities in Hunter Valley Wine Country, not just for adults, but for the whole family. “There is something for everyone, from the Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular, to horse riding through the vines,” Mr Souris said. “We also have the world-class Australian Infantry Museum in Singleton, which is designed to educate our younger generation, whilst having fun at the same time.” The region’s tourism industry was also boosted recently by figures from hotel search site trivago.com.au which saw the towns of Rothbury and Lovedale top the NSW list for hotel reputation, based on customer ratings. Rothbury, ranked first in NSW, was third overall in Australia-wide ratings.

Participants in the trip were asked to raise at least $1000 for the school, which sponsors one St Jude student through one year of education. Fiona, however, said she had been determined to significantly exceed that figure. “I managed to raise $8000 in six months through different activities such as a movie night, a colouring-in competition for primary school students, bake sales and raffle tickets,” she said. “One of the main missions of my fundraising was to create awareness amongst students of the value of education, which is something most young people take for granted.” - Paul Monforte

Real Film Festival director Annette Hubber. Photo: Jamie Wicks.

A celluloid celebration ith tales of conquering Everest from a Sherpa’s point of view, a stark look at Australia through the eyes of actor David Gulpilil, a whimsical film about a young boy’s dream to be a paper plane champion, a history of humour factory National Lampoon and more local stories than you can point a camera at,

the program for the 2015 Real Film Festival is shaping up to be one of the biggest and most eclectic yet. The community-minded festival showcases the depth of local, national and international cinematic talent on offer with hefty feature and short-film programs, networking events, Q and A discussions and workshops.

“Secondly, it provides a fantastic forum for these industry professionals to network with emerging filmmakers and, thirdly, it provides some really top-class entertainment - a lot of great independent films bypass this region and this festival aims to bring some of them to a wider audience.” Ms Hubber added that one of the jewels in this year’s festival crown was the short-film program, of which, Hunter stories feature quite prominently. “The short-film section is my favourite one to program – we get such a diversity of stories and, this year, out of the 90 or so submissions that we received, around 50 per cent were from local filmmakers which is just fantastic,” she said. The Real Film Festival is on from Friday 27 November to Sunday 29 November. For more information and a full program, visit realfilmfestival.com.au - Stephen Bisset

“The festival appeals to emerging and established film makers, who can learn from the award-winning film practitioners coming to town to run the workshops,” she said.

There’s something for everybody with a huge focus on customer service and installation.

“Our point of difference is that the festival is all based around true stories,” festival director Annette Hubber told Newcastle Weekly. “I personally love true stories and they help change the way you think, the way you act and the way you approach life.” Ms Hubber added that initiatives like RFF were integral to a healthy film industry in the Hunter region. “When I moved back to Newcastle around eight or nine years ago I was really surprised that there wasn’t a film festival in Newcastle - Shootout was in its last year and there was really nothing in the area to foster talent. I wanted Newcastle and the Hunter region to have their own festival that was unique and unlike other festivals,” she said.

Rock-solid defence keeps Jets in finals contention hile the Newcastle Jets may not have managed to create a single shot on goal in their scoreless draw against

Adelaide United, coach Scott Miller has preferred to concentrate on the resolute defence that withstood a strong finish from the Reds.

“The purpose of any game you play is to win,” Miller said. “But, considering the last two weeks where we’ve conceded late, I thought to buck that trend today and see out the match with a clean sheet in a pressurised environment was fantastic.” Miller said gaining a point away from home against a traditionally strong club such as Adelaide was vital in the rebuilding of the team’s culture. “The fans need to respect the efforts of the players and understand that a point away from home in this league is very important to the club.” “To be one point off Sydney FC, undefeated on the road, gives us a good idea where we’re at,” he said. Newcastle enjoyed almost 60% of possession but were unable to generate pressure on Adelaide goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic. Mark Birighitti was again impressive for the visitors, with Adelaide sending 11 unsuccessful shots his way.

The Jets are back at home at Hunter Stadium this weekend for their clash with league leaders Brisbane Roar on Saturday afternoon at 5.15pm. The match doubles as Newcastle’s RAAF Base Williamtown round, with the Jets to wear a special Royal Australian Air Force jersey featuring F/A-18 Hornets on the front. The jersey is available for purchase from the Newcastle Jets Club Store, Ground Floor, 19 Honeysuckle Drive, Newcastle and also at Hunter Stadium on gameday. A-League ladder after round 7: Brisbane Roar 14pts (+6), * Melbourne Victory 13pts (+6), Western Sydney Wanderers 13pts (+3), Sydney FC 12pts (+2), Newcastle Jets 11pts (+1), Wellington Phoenix 10pts (-1), Melbourne City 8pts (-1), Central Coast Mariners 5pts (-5), * Perth Glory 4pts (-2), Adelaide United 3pts (-9). * one game in hand. - Paul Monforte

We need your support to brighten Christmas for children in need Newcastle Weekly is calling on the support of our loyal and valued readers as we launch our Christmas toy appeal in support of child protection charity Barnardos Australia. In the lead-up to Christmas, Newcastle Weekly will be accepting donations of toys, which will be passed on to Barnardos to brighten the holiday period for children in need across the Hunter. Barnardos strategic recruitment worker, Korryn said donations, small or large, would be greatly appreciated.

“Christmas can be a sad and often heart-breaking time for vulnerable children in our care, but your generosity really makes a difference,” she said. “This is a very powerful way to impact a child’s life this Christmas. “There are so many basic needs that are unable to be met for children in our care without support from the community.” Toys are needed for boys and girls of all ages. They can be left unwrapped and brought to the Newcastle Weekly office at 19 Pearson St, Charlestown. Donations will be accepted until Tuesday 15 December. We are located in the blue building between Chemist Warehouse and Lifeline. Our business hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. 9

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Enter to WIN Newcastle Weekly has a double pass to see Troy Kemp at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday 5 December. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly.com.au with ‘Troy Kemp’ in the subject field. Tell us your name, full contact details and the answer to the following question: ‘what duo was Troy Kemp a part of before going solo?’ Entries close and winners drawn 9am on Wednesday 2 December. Novocastrian Troy Kemp will unleash his debut solo album at the Cambridge next week.

KEMP IS STILL COUNTRY PROUD

With his powerhouse country rock duo McAlister Kemp announcing an indefinite hiatus at the end of last year, Novocastrian songwriter Troy Kemp is back with a massive new album Against the Grain. aving become a staple in the Oz country scene, with multiple Australian country chart number ones, a Golden Guitar nod and making some serious inroads into the US with their unashamedly rocking brand of US-tinged country, McAlister Kemp announced last year that they were taking an indefinite break to focus on solo projects. Now, Troy Kemp is gearing up to release the first fruits of his solo labours – the tubthumping rocking country album Against the Grain and judging by the reception the singles - How We Roll Around Here (currently sitting at number one on the CMC Top 50 Countdown) and the title track have been getting around the traps, it looks as though 12

it’s going to be another massive year ahead for the Novocastrian songwriter. “It is a very exciting time for me right now as the tour is kicking off in a couple of days and the album will be out next week,” Kemp told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s been a long time coming – I mean, it took about a year and a half to write and I did a lot of the writing with my good mate Jeremy Barnes who is an absolute freak on the guitar,” he said. Kemp added that while Against the Grain covered similar country rock territory that formed the basis of McAlister Kemp, the album is tempered with a lot more light and shade.

“People can definitely expect a pretty rockin’ country album but Jeremy and I wanted to write an album that had these big moments as well as more heartfelt moments and I’m just stocked with what we’ve achieved.” While his erstwhile duo were certainly no slouches in the live stakes, Kemp said that punters could expect his solo shows to be an even bigger affair. “I really want to ramp things up a notch,” he said. “The band I’ve got is just killer and we have a massive rock sound, so you definitely need a show that can live up to that.” Troy Kemp – Cambridge Hotel – Saturday 5 December. - Stephen Bisset

DINING

DEVILISH DESSERTS AND MORISH MAINS AT GUYLIAN

’m not going to lie. When I was afforded the opportunity to review the Guylian Belgian Chocolate Café at Honeysuckle last weekend, thoughts of an overstimulated Homer Simpson skipping through the Land of Chocolate came to mind. While there’s no denying that the name Guylian is synonymous with quality cocoa-based confections, and for good reason, the Guylian Belgian Chocolate Café offers much more than just sweet treats. While the menu does feature a dizzying array of choco-centric creations that are sure to set eyes and hearts aflutter (more on that later), there are also plenty of Belgian-inspired savoury treats to tempt your tastebuds – such as handmade Belgian pastries, ham and cheese croissants and threeegg omelettes for breakfast or an array of Belgian baguettes or even savoury Belgian waffles on the lunch/dinner menu. I decided to kick off my dining experience with a poached chicken baguette and while it was a simple dish – perfectly poached chicken, crisp lettuce, zesty cheddar, sweet tomatoes, traditional mayonnaise encased in a fresh wholegrain baguette - it was made to delicious and

satisfying perfection. My dining partner decided on the savoury Belgian waffles and was presented with a morish take on the classic Croque Monsieur (replete with delicious leg ham and gruyere cheese) with the traditional brioche replaced with Belgian waffles. A truly unexpected offering, this dish was a true standout and the addition of a fresh and zesty green salad rounded the plate off perfectly. This was arguably the fanciest ham and cheese toastie I’ve seen in a long while. Thankfully we didn’t have to agonise too hard over the dessert choices as we were presented with a mesmerising degustation plate which offered a pretty good overview of the whole Guylian dessert experience. Lavishly presented, this indulgent course included a sampling of the decadent Guylian chocolate and hazelnut pyramid, filled with a smooth dark chocolate and caramelised hazelnut mousse, a Passion Temptation – white chocolate mousse paired with a tangy caramelised cream, a Guylian Bombe au Chocolate – Belgian dark and white chocolate mousse with a delectable praline, as well as scoops of vanilla and chocolate ice cream and a selection of individual gourmet chocolates. Wow. Just wow. This heady dessert was augmented with a gorgeous coconut hot chocolate while my dining partner’s Guylian mocha – made with their own

house blend provided the perfect balance between the bitter chocolate tones and the full-bodied coffee. So, if you’re looking for somewhere in Newcastle to get your chocolate fix or if your tastes lie more on the savoury side, Guylian Belgian Chocolate Café certainly has you covered. Guylian Belgian Chocolate Café - Shop 3 15-17 Honeysuckle Drive, Newcastle. - Stephen Bisset

November 27 – December 3

PICK OF THE WEEK Clueless Sunday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (1995) This teen classic of the ‘90s, based on Jane Austen’s Emma, is a sharp and very funny satire. As prissy 16-yearold Cher, the delectable Alicia Silverstone (above) takes a grand tour of self-discovery beneath the shallow surface of Beverly Hills superficiality and finds there’s more to life than facials, BMWs and silicone. Cher provides us with the perfect antidote to the world of celebrity-obsessed vacuousness, lightheartedly analysing the falsehood that surrounds her, with wit and charm.

Friday

Monday, PRIME7, 9pm, M (2000) Jay Roach (the Austin Powers movies) directed this wonderful comedy, which pits bumbling but good-natured male nurse Greg Focker (Ben Stiller, above) against scary potential father-in-law Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro, above). Greg plans to ask Jack for Pam’s hand in marriage, but his constant blundering and nervousness does little to soften the gruff Jack, during a calamitous visit to the Byrnes’ family home. This old-fashioned charmer relies on traditional techniques and an absence of vulgarity to provoke laughs. A winner.

Saturday, PRIME7, 7pm, PG (2013) Set in Norway, singer and actress Idina Menzel voices the lithe and beautiful queen Elsa, who has the ability to control ice and snow, but when she unwittingly freezes the entire kingdom, its up to her equally pretty sister, princess Anna (Kristen Bell), along with snowman Olaf (Josh Gad) and ice monger Kristoff, to save her.
