This week... From the editor What a laugh we had with Adam Hills at the Civic Theatre last week. After 45 hilarious minutes of heckling latecomers and giving away their seats, and a rendition of the National Anthem to the tune of Jimmy Barnes’ Working Class Man (try it, it’s a winner) he got down to delivering the Clown Heart show that laughs, sings and dances in the face of death. He told of his dear old dad, recently departed, the “Kick cancer in the dick” dance they did right to the end, and the loss of his father-in-law a year later. He showed the tiny heart tattoo he got on his chest during a live charity show, and told how it reminded him of his young daughter’s attitude to death: “You must have a clown heart.” And he welcomed to the stage Novocastrian Craig Coombes, of Naked Tuesday Facebook fame. With terminal cancer, Craig knows he is dying, so is getting on with living, including having a go at stand-up and getting naked. He’s pretty funny, and even though it wasn’t Tuesday, he and Hills got their gear off. And they passed the hat around for Alex McKinnon. I’ll leave Naked Tuesday to Craig, but I will take up one of Hillsy and his dad’s habits. “Let’s end on a high note,” they’d say before parting, and, even in intensive care, sing a high note. La!

Off to school here’s a mother’s group in Lake Macquarie that will be debriefing over coffee next week as they send their firstborns off to school. The seven mothers met through the Charlestown health centre’s new mums group in April 2010 and have been gathering weekly ever since. All but one has had a second child (all now aged three), and their husbands join the throng for Christmas parties and camping trips. “It’s like family away from family,” mum Emma Pope said. “The kids are like cousins.” Emma said she would send daughter Lucy off to Kahibah Public School on Tuesday “and no doubt she’ll be hand-in-hand with her best friend, Taylan”. “We’ll be there with the cameras and the tissues ready,” Emma said. “But I know it will be fine. Lucy is so excited she won’t take her uniform off.” Others in the group will go to Hillsborough and Eleebana public schools and St Joseph’s Charlestown. As they’ll turn six in March-April, all were eligible to start school last year, but were held back. “School readiness is such a big deal, but the preschools do a great job of getting them ready, and there are no nerves at all,” Emma said. Five of the group, with two other friends, posed for the Newcastle Weekly in their uniforms last week. We asked them what they were most excited about. Read their delightful responses to the right.

Housing crisis for women and children Hunter groups are lobbying their MPs to provide more funding to address the lack of affordable housing and high levels of child poverty in the region ahead of the state budget. Ten groups including Family Support Newcastle and Nova for Women and Children met to endorse a NSW Council of Social Service pre-budget submission that identifies seven priority areas for funding, topped by housing and homelessness. Nova for Women and Children CEO Kelly Hansen said nine out of 11 local government areas in 4
the region had no affordable or appropriate rental properties for a single person on Newstart or Youth Allowance, and four, including Newcastle, Maitland and Port Stephens, had none affordable for single-parent families. “Many families and young people are struggling to keep a roof over their heads as well as providing for day-to-day living expenses,” Ms Hansen said. “We need to start seeing developers and builders set aside a share of any new development for affordable housing, and greater investment from government to
deliver a significant increase in the social and affordable housing stock in NSW.” Family Support Network CEO Annette Tubnor said one in seven children in NSW was living in households experiencing poverty, and in areas such as Cessnock it was even higher. “Children and young people who experience poverty are more likely to have health problems, experience housing and food insecurity, and not achieve their full potential at school,” Ms Tubnor said. - Alysson Watson
Domestic violence court funding Nine Hunter court-based domestic violence services will receive an extra $70,000 in state government funding for the next six months. The NSW Legal Aid Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Services in Newcastle, Toronto, Belmont, Raymond Terrace, Maitland, Cessnock, Kurri Kurri, Singleton and Muswellbrook have been boosted as part of an $800,000 statewide increase to 28 courts. Last year the service supported more than 30,000 women and their children statewide, including 3,200 in the Hunter.

Voice for voiceless ally Coddington says she’s not the kind of mother to stay at home and cut crusts off Vegemite sandwiches, but she is the kind to join the NSW Disability Council. The Hunter businesswoman, university lecturer and mother of three girls, one of whom has an acquired brain injury, is the
with a disability looking for work. “There is no point if businesses do all this work and the people they are targeting know nothing about it,” Sally said. Part of the task is convincing businesses it is worth the effort. “Only a small percentage of people with a disability use wheelchairs; most need help with communication issues,” she said. Her own daughter, Nicky, 10, is a quadriplegic who is non-verbal. “She doesn’t communicate in a way that other people can engage with,” Sally said. “It is humbling to be her voice. Nicky is exceedingly healthy, conscious of everything and contributes in her unique way. And she is a total ‘love magnet’. Everyone wants to touch her!” A long-term goal is to make the word “disability” redundant, to reduce the barriers that create disability. “It's just about a community enjoying diversity." - Alysson Watson
Who’s a Big Boy then Hunter residents have been urged to keep a lookout for funnel web spiders for the Australian Reptile Park’s venom program. The call comes after 7.5cm “Big Boy” was handed into John Hunter Hospital after being found in bush. Reptile park head curator Liz Vella said he would now be milked to help make anti-venom to protect against their deadly bite. “January and February are the peak times when male funnelweb spiders are out trying to find females to mate and, given that only males can be milked, we really encourage local communities to hand them in,” she said. Sally left her role as CEO of Hunter Life Education last year to set up her own business, Curb-Cut Effect, named for a movement in 1960s California where “curb cuts” (gradients between footpaths and roads) were widely introduced to make it easier for students in wheelchairs to attend university. “It’s an example of a microenvironment change that quickly became standard practice,” Sally said. “And it shows that when you design for people with a disability you end up with a design that is better for everyone.” Her business aims to help businesses create a more accessible environment through improving physical access, training in disability confidence, support through products and services, and marketing businesses to people

Glory a distant mirage for out-gunned Jets ighto, where were we? Ah yes: the only way is up for the Jets and Knights. Well, I did say last week that I was trying to be positive. Perhaps “it can’t get any worse” would have been more apt. Or, given the Jets’ record 6-1 home loss to Perth on Sunday, snafu. In my defence, I included the rider that the FFA and NRL had a tight grip on the purse strings at both clubs, and that we couldn’t expect to compete for titles under those constraints. The Jets have made a virtue of being competitive this season, and they have been in most games. But, while the FFA refuses to stump up for the marquee players its A-League rules allow outside the salary cap, the Jets will lag in class and depth, and disasters will happen.
Perth owner Tony Sage doesn’t mind splashing the cash. He bristles a bit when the FFA fines him for spending too much, as he did last season, but he still signs a guy like Diego Castro, who played 32 games in the Spanish top flight last season and who did as he pleased on Sunday. The Jets shopped in the bargain bins and found former Ajax man Leonardo, who hadn’t played for 12 months before Newcastle signed him and, not surprisingly, barely has since. • I read with interest comments from FFA boss David Gallop that there was “strong Asian and European interest” in buying the Jets, although a “best-case scenario” was that any sale would “probably take some months”. The FFA maintained, while in talks with Scottish multi-millionaire
Stephen Thompson, that they had other options, but none has emerged since that fell through. I still believe a Hunter consortium is the best hope for long-term success. Surely we have the people and passion to make it work. But it’s now or never. • Meanwhile, over at the no-frills Knights, the preseason unfolds in a predictably positive pattern. New coach Nathan Brown says the boys are looking good, the boys are happy with the new structures Brownie is putting in place, players with a point to prove are determined to step up, and everyone’s controlling what they can control. Here in Newcastle, where being competitive is defined as being in the comp, that’s the least – if not the most – we can hope for.
AHEAD OF THE GAME KEVIN CRANSON
HIT… Jets coach Scott Miller – herein dubbed the Positive One – refusing to bag Nigel Boogaard for getting sent off against Perth. “What a skipper he is. What a leader he is.” When everyone’s under the pump, you don’t play the blame game. MISS… Another red card for Boogaard, the most sent-off player in A-League history. I take your point Scott, but when your skipper, who only goes into the opposition half for corners and has already been given a yellow ticket, launches into a flying zucchini in enemy territory on the stroke of half-time, it’s not the kind of leadership required. sport@newcastleweekly.com.au

Bananarama will play Wests City, Newcastle, on Sunday 14 February.
BANANARAMA IS BACK hey still hold the record for the most chart entries in the world by an all-female group and now, after what seems like an eternity, ’80s pop favourites Bananarama are heading back to Australia with Wang Chung and our own Chantoozies in tow. Original members Karen Woodward and Sara Dallin perform as a duo these days – Siobhan Fahey left in 1988 and her replacement Jacquie O'Sullivan left in 1991. “We’ve always loved coming to Australia but the reason we haven’t been down there for so long is that we really hate flying,” Woodward told Newcastle Weekly. Their Australian tour, the first since 1997, will be a set comprised of what was the soundtrack to many people of a certain age’s lives – Venus, I heard a Rumour, Robert De Niro’s Waiting, and 14
Cruel Summer. “It’s definitely going to be all the hits plus a few new ones and we’ll be doing it all with a live band,” she said. Last time they were here it was without a band. “These shows will be a lot longer and there’ll be new arrangements of the songs but we’ll still be singing them as they were and people might still recognise one or two of the dance moves from the videos.” Bananarama run the musical gamut – with strong roots in the UK punk world (Sex Pistol Steve Jones produced their first single, Aie a Mwana ) to working with ‘80s hit machine Stock Aitken and Waterman, and Woodward is proud to say they’ve done it largely on their own terms. “We came from not really expecting anything to becoming really well known so it was a

constant surprise to us,” she said. “We were also very shy but we also weren’t very good at listening to people. In hindsight, we probably should have, from time to time, but I think that’s something that worked in our favour because we always did our own thing. I think that was the beauty of the ‘80s – there was more freedom for bands to have their own identity.” It’s been 33 years since Bananarama’s debut album, Deep Sea Skiving, set them on the path to pop domination and Woodward said it was the lure of live performance that kept her and Dallin coming back. “Sometimes Sara and I will be sitting in front of the mirror, putting on our make-up before a show, and we’ll say ‘you know, this is the most ridiculous way you make a living’, and it is, but we just love doing it,” she said. “The beauty of now is that we don’t have all that record company pressure, so we get to do only the bits that we love, like performing. “Back in the ‘80s we didn’t really get to do it all that much because everything was so tied up with promotion, video shoots and MTV, but now we can focus more on getting out in front of people, which we just love." - Stephen Bisset

PICK OF THE WEEK Troy Sunday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2004) Brad Pitt (pictured) takes on the mighty task of portraying Achilles, the great Greek warrior. The year is 1193BC, and all hell is set to break loose when the King of Sparta (Brendan Gleeson) receives word that his wife Helen (Diane Kruger) has run off with Prince Paris of Troy (Orlando Bloom). Pitt’s mojo – evidenced in his buff physique and a couple of barebottom sex scenes – pretty much outshines his performance. Elsewhere, Eric Bana fares better as Trojan warrior Hector.

Saturday, WIN, 9pm, M (2011) Bradley Cooper (pictured) stars as struggling writer Eddie, whose life changes when he discovers a top-secret drug that gives him super human abilities to recall everything he sees or hears. With his newfound skills opening up new doors, Eddie ditches his writing and takes on Wall Street. His skills attract the attention of Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro), who invites Eddie to help broker the biggest merger in corporate history.
Saturday, ONE, 8.30pm, M (1998) The feature extension of the small-screen series takes a workmanlike, but entertaining, look at the joys of paranoia. To be fair, it’s more than a transparent cash-cow spin-off for the producers. David Duchovny (pictured) and Gillian Anderson, the ubiquitous FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, take it upon themselves (well, mostly Mulder) to search for “the truth” to conspiracy rumours surrounding the investigation of the bombing of a government building in Dallas.

WITH FRANCIS BEVAN
Harry is feeling the need to stimulate his intellectual side. A brother or sister is likely to act as a guardian angel, stepping in to help him out of a tricky situation. The Full Moon on 23 February indicates that expenses are likely to get out of hand. He may need to deal with a manager, partner or other decision maker who is not so easy to please. It's a good time to pour on the charm!
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
Friends are going to have a powerful influence on your future prospects and Uranus gives you added optimism and vitality. Obstacles that have irritated you on the work front will be swept away. You need to take a responsible approach to your financial affairs at the moment.
It's time to indulge that adventurous streak with a crazy day out. If you have to deal with awkward, demanding children or immature adults, you will defuse the most troubling situations by the use of empathy and assertiveness. Be careful of misplacing documents and valuables.
Get ready for a big storm at work
Your focus is on economic security and a cost cutting drive becomes your new obsession. It might take a bit more energy than usual to hold your tongue or keep your temper in check, especially when dealing with paperwork or bureaucracy. As usual, it's worth the effort!
You will have the urge to demand recognition for past efforts; no matter how this ambitious phase manifests itself your prospects are considerably boosted from now on. You might suspect that a friend's motives aren’t genuine, but don't act without knowing the full facts of the situation.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Secrets are exposed in the family and at work creating a lot of rumour mongering, but you are best advised to avoid getting involved in anything that doesn't concern you. If an old health complaint keeps flaring up, now’s the time to seek professional advice.
Doggie
You might mix it up in response, though that won't really get you anywhere. Keep the mood light and your time unscheduled.
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22 Mars is in Scorpio and you
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23 The planets are all heating up your love zone so expect conversations with your partner to be deep and intense. For couples wanting a family this is the ideal time to set plans in motion. If your energy levels are low, be sure to get adequate rest.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23 It's the ideal time to fill your cupboards with healthy foods, to haul out your exercise gear and to get a few early nights. You are going to be a little too critical for your own good, making colleagues and neighbours difficult to get on with.
Rendezvous & Pet Minding Services

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
overnight, but it will happen.
Happy Birthday Aquarius! 2016 will see you climbing the ladder of success! With Mars in a difficult aspect to your sign you're ready to confront any unfinished business both personally and professionally even if this means having a few confrontations. Patience and tolerance are the keys to success.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
are beyond confident. In fact, you're radiating power. Instead of criticising others, put your assurance to work by pitching ideas to your boss and colleagues that you want to see come to fruition. It might not happen
Your mind is on business and that could mean you have to deal with work issues even after closing time. Uranus is putting you at an impasse regarding a conflict with your partner. It may be time to give in and make peace.
“Dogleawash-lkinfreg,e outings
It's all about you throughout February. Neptune gives you a boost of confidence, it's time to break old habits and take up new ventures. The travel bug is likely to bite so take a look through a few brochures or online and start to make plans.
