This week... From the editor Our Taste section this week features a delicious tomato and feta tart. Usually, I’m a dedicated meat eater but I have to admit that looks pretty darn good as a dinner option. Also, be sure to check out our My Favourite Things section on page 43 to find out what the long-serving mayor of Maitland, Peter Blackmore likes to do in his spare time. And finally, I hope you all enjoy your Melbourne Cup day celebrations, wherever you are choosing to spend it. I’ve always planned on heading down to Flemington one year to see the great race live, but I’m not sure how I’d handle the crush of more than 100,000 people. For those of you who have been studying the latest betting markets and wondering where last year’s winner Protectionist is, the horse has been struggling with injury and the decision was made to take him back to Germany to continue his racing. As for my tip for the Cup – I think Who Shot Thebarman has a great chance at double-figure odds. He finished third in last year’s race and has a terrific trainer in Chris Waller. But, please don’t let me put you off your own selection. Even if you just pick your horses by their name or the colour the jockey wears, go for it.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes has taken aim at IPART findings.
Chorus of disapproval rises over council amalgamations ewcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes has called into question recent findings from the state government Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) report that suggests that Newcastle and Lake Macquarie councils should merge. The Fit for the Future report identified Newcastle, Lake
Macquarie as well as Maitland and Dungog councils (among 60% of unfit councils across the state) as being ‘unfit for the future’ as standalone councils however Cr Nelmes questioned the validity of a merger with Lake Macquarie. “The Hunter region does not have an oversupply of small local government areas like Sydney,” she said.
“Newcastle’s future success will come from being managed as an integrated metropolitan city rather than a regional city. “Many communities to the north and northwest of Newcastle already identify Newcastle as their local capital – southern Lake Macquarie identifies much more strongly with the Central Coast and Sydney and it doesn’t make sense
for that area to become part of an LGA with Newcastle as its central hub. Newcastle will review the full IPART report and respond as requested by 18 November.” Member for Lake Macquarie Greg Piper said he could see no justification for the proposed merger. “This finding only reinforces my view that this merger is about propping up Newcastle City Council, at the expense of another council with an excellent record of financial management and efficiency,” he said. The mood was much the same in the Hunter with Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison saying Mike Baird is wrong to force amalgamation on Maitland and Dungog. “The Premier is just not listening to anyone except his own party,” she said. “I agree with the report from Maitland and Dungog Council that clearly demonstrates there are virtually no savings to be generated from a merger and, in fact, costs would rise. “If non-voluntary amalgamations are forced on communities, I will work with councils to oppose them.” - Stephen Bisset
Gonski education funding finds its way to the Hunter Public schools in the Hunter region feature prominently in the announcement of $113 million in additional needs-based funding under the Gonski education reforms. Schools in the Newcastle area will receive a total of $5,291,372 including Hunter Performing Arts receiving $438,938 in 2016, an increase of $152,452 on 2015; Newcastle High School $660,599 (up $146,648) and Merewether High School $348,977 (up $139,734). In Lake Macquarie, total funding will be $7,761,582, with notable examples being Morisset High School receiving $1,004,919 (up $145,776); Lake Macquarie High School $863,273 4
(up 123,084) and Toronto High School $934,745 (up $122,944). Funding for Maitland public schools will be $11,717,442 with some of the major recipients being Telarah High School $1,199,001 (up $164,776); Rutherford Public School $874,093 (up $149,146) and Maitland High School $1,200,833 (up $131,038). Member for Maitland, Jenny Aitchison welcomed the increased injection of funds in the region. “After months of playing politics with our community, I am glad the NSW Government has finally recognised that education and children
are above petty political games and allocated this funding to public schools that need it most,” Ms Aitchison said. “With our population continuing to grow, it is important that schools in Maitland have access to the technology and resources that will guarantee that all students can reach their full potential. “I will be writing to the Minister for Education to ask him how and when the funding will be rolled out to ensure schools have the earliest opportunity to implement new programs and I will continue to advocate on behalf of all our local schools.” - Paul Monforte

A dash through the countryside to support kids in need hen choosing the model of motorbike for a ride of more 1600 kilometres on rough terrain, the mode of transport used by postal delivery staff would generally not figure at the top of the list. But, for the 30 participants in the Variety Good Guys Postie Dash, sacrificing a bit of power is all part of the adventure in the six-day round-trip from November 1 to 6, which starts in Newcastle and aims to raise $60,000 to assist children with medical equipment and therapy. For Garden Suburb’s Guy Finn, his own medical emergency last year proved the catalyst for deciding to raise money for others.

“I had a heart attack on Anzac Day last year,” Mr Finn said. “There is a history of heart disease in my family, so I made sure I got myself to hospital as soon as I started having the chest pains.” While in rehabilitation, Mr Finn was made aware of the Postie Dash and set about purchasing the 1995 Honda 110cc bike he has jokingly christened ‘Jodie’.
“I bought my bike off a couple of young blokes who had paddock-bashed it,” he said. “They had caned it and I asked myself whether I really wanted to buy it after seeing the condition it was in. “I’ve ridden motorbikes for years and have also taught kids’ scripture classes and coached my son’s soccer teams. The Dash proved to be the perfect combination of my two passions, supporting kids and riding motorbikes.” The ride departs from the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club on Sunday 1 November and take in regional cities including Tamworth, Narrabri, Coonamble, Gulgong and Denman. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $2000, with Mr Finn having attracted around $1600 of support to date. Donations can be made to support Mr Finn at 2015postiedash.everydayhero.com/au/guyfinn with full information on the Postie Dash available at variety.org.au - Paul Monforte
Better local councils. Better local services. Better local infrastructure.
Stronger Councils. Stronger Communities. New South Wales has a complex system of 152 local councils that was put in place over 100 years ago. The system is broken. After four years of extensive consultation, it’s time to create a network of modern councils that are fit for the 21st century. These new, more effective councils will be able to deliver the improved services and infrastructure that your local community needs and deserves.

Defensive wall has Jets flying ets hero David Carney has highlighted the concentration on a defensive structure as the main reason for a strong start to the season that has Newcastle sitting in fourth place after the 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory. “Last year, we weren’t organised,” Carney said, after scoring the match-winning goal in the 75th minute against the Victory. “We conceded over fifty goals which shows how unorganised we were but, since the gaffer [Miller] has come in,… we’ve worked really hard on our defensive structure and it’s proved over the last three games.” Coach Scott Miller praised his side’s effort and determination. “It’s a small success for a club that’s in the rebuild,” he said. “It’s very important that we actually recognise the achievement

but we’re stoked with the reaction to the singles [Revelator Eyes and Electric Indigo and we just can’t wait to get on the road and play them. “It was a really cool experiment, though – Sam [Bentley] basically changed his whole body clock for six weeks which would have been pretty tough, but he ended up with around 30 songs which is a great problem to have.” With their last album States gaining the band much traction both here and in North America, you’d be forgiven that there would be a eight of expectation surrounding the release of the ‘difficult second album’. But, for Rasmussen, that came earlier.
THE KITES FLY AT MIDNIGHT f ever there was a band who took Wilson Pickett’s immortal words I’m gonna wait ‘til the midnight hour to heart, it would have to be Melbourne-based indie folk rockers The Paper Kites. Their latest album twelvefour, which hit the streets late last month, revolves around the idea than an artist reaches their creative peak between the hours of midnight and 4am and, to that end, principal songwriter Sam Bentley spent two months penning 30 songs in his home studio through some truly ungodly hours. The result, however, is an expansive, complex and delicate album that, while still revelling in the indie-folk sound and
ethereal harmonies, from Bentley and co-vocalist Christina Lacey, of their critically-lauded debut States, branches out with deeper instrumentation, drum machines dirtier guitars and lush production from Seattle-based producer Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Fleet Foxes, Father John Misty). The band, last week, kicked off a national tour in support of the album and bass player Sam Rasmussen told Newcastle Weekly the sense of relief about getting out on the road with album number two was palpable. “Yeah it is quite exciting but it also quite relieving,” he said. “When you spend months in the studio bubble it can be hard to be objective about everything,

Melbourne’s Paper Kites bring their late-night sounds to Newcastle.
“I guess I started feeling nervous and a bit of pressure right after States came out,” he said. “After it came out, it was like ‘oh , man what do we do now’, but, by the time this record rolled around a lot of that had gone and we just wanted to make the best album we could.” With the album working its way into everyone’s ears, the band won’t have much time to rest on their laurels with a North American tour keeping them busy until Christmas. “Yeah, there won’t be much time to put the feet up, but it is great to be out on the road.” - The Paper Kites – Lizotte’s Lambton – Thursday 5 November. - Stephen Bisset

The show goes on for Thirsty Merc It’s been a pretty rough couple of months for seminal indie poppers Thirsty Merc after the band were involved in a car accident while on tour in Victoria that tragically took the life of the band’s stage manager Shane Cooper and left touring drummer Mick Skelton in a critical condition. Alison and Simon Holst’s easy tomato and feta tart
Ultimate Vegetarian Collection by Simon and Alison Holst (New Holland Publishers RRP $45)
EASY TOMATO AND FETA TART
This easy tart, taken from Alison and Simon Holst’s cookbook Ultimate Vegetarian Collection, is similar to a pizza. It looks and tastes great and, as it uses bought, pre-rolled pastry, it is really simple to prepare. INGREDIENTS Serves 4 2 sheets (about 300g) pre-rolled flaky pastry, thawed.
½ medium yellow or red pepper (deseeded)
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1-2 cloves garlic, crushed, peeled and chopped (optional)
1 teaspoon dried basil or 1 tablespoon pesto
About 6 basil leaves, roughly shredded
1 tablespoon water
2 tablespoons olive oil
½ teaspoon dried marjoram
100g feta cheese, crumbled
½ teaspoon salt
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Grind of freshly ground black pepper
METHOD
trying to keep the edge clean.
Preheat the oven to 200°C.
Cut each of the tomatoes and the onion into 6-8 small wedges, and slice the pepper into strips about 1cm wide. Halve the zucchini lengthwise and cut into ribbons. Combine the vegetables, garlic (if using) and basil leaves in a plastic bag or bowl. Add the olive oil and stir gently until the vegetables are well mixed and evenly coated in oil.
Lay the first sheet of pastry on a lightly oiled or non-stick sprayed baking sheet. Brush the surface lightly with water, then lay the second sheet exactly on top. Roll or press the two sheets lightly together. Without cutting right through the pastry, run a sharp knife around the sheet about 1.5-2cm inside the edge, marking out a smaller square. Mix together the tomato paste, dried basil or pesto, water, marjoram, salt and pepper. Spread this paste evenly over the surface of the smaller square,
250g small ripe tomatoes 1 small red onion ½ medium zucchini
Arrange the prepared vegetables over the paste-covered base, then sprinkle the tart evenly with crumbled feta. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then bake at 200°C for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
A TASTE OF NANNA’S COOKING IN THE VINEYARDS Tucked away in the beautiful surroundings of the Hunter Valley you’ll find a restaurant that encompasses all things family, friendship and love. Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen is the recent endeavour of Matthew Kerr and Jimmy Wright and serves as a homage to the matriarch of the family, Anne Kerr. “This is all for my beautiful Nan and Pop (Peter) – it’s dedicated to them,” Mr Kerr said. 16
“It’s a place where my family can come to catch up for different events and more than that we want the whole community to feel like they are a part of our family.” Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen serves hearty homestyle meals with a large focus on local produce and supporting the organic community. Mr Wright said the aim was to provide comfort food in a homely environment. “It’s so nice to actually be able to
treat it like Nan’s kitchen,” he said. “The we put up is local, organic and it’s what people crave.”. Mrs Kerr said she very proud to have been honoured by her grandson. “This is just wonderful, if you live long enough, look what can happen,” she said. “Peter and I really appreciate family, friends and the kindness that can come from people’s hearts. We are just so proud of these kids
and to be a part of Nanna Kerr’s.” The recent grand opening of the restaurant was in support of the Kids Helpline, with the Kerr family, having shown continued support for 15 years. Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen is located at 438 Wilderness Rd, Rothbury NSW 2320, Nanna Kerr’s Kitchen is a must do for the Hunter Region. Modern classic style the Bay Leather Republic way.
Affordable luxury at Bay Leather Republic Whether timeless beauty is your style or you prefer a sleek and modern look, Bay Leather Republic at Kotara can help transform your home.
B
ay Leather Republic has been the trusted name in the Hunter region for highquality furniture since the opening of the Kotara store in 2010. Bay Leather Republic has seven stores across Australia and is part of Steinhoff International, one of the largest furniture retail and manufacturing groups in the world. The shared knowledge from the global group is thoughtfully applied to how Australians live. Because of its natural strength and extraordinary ability to improve with age, leather does, and always will represent the best value for money. The best quality upholstery leathers breathe and feel cool in summer and warm during winter. Kotara store licensee, Michael Boyd, said Bay Leather Republic’s product range extended far beyond lounges. “We have a range of occasional chairs, sofa bed options, dining tables, entertainment units, rugs, cushions, an awesome range of quality, unique homewares and we believe we are the home of home theatre furniture,” Mr Boyd said. “Our staff can assist with customising a particular look and feel and we also offer a
20
decorating service. “We offer personal, caring service to help our customers to either find that one special piece to complement their home or to guide them through the process of finding a style that suits.” Every sofa, chair and ottoman is crafted in high-quality leather. Full grain leather highlights the natural characteristics of the hide, while corrected grain leather has a more uniform, kid-friendly finish. Both are comfortable and beautiful. When it comes to creating new designs, Bay Leather Republic don’t just study furniture. They study people. How they sit, how they read, how they stretch, how they cuddle and how they flop. Bay Leather Republic’s mid-season sale is on now until November 9. Save up to 30% off fullpriced leather sofas. Three-seater lounges start from $1499. PICK OF THE WEEK The Bourne Legacy Friday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2012) Set in the same world as Matt Damon’s outstanding trilogy, The Bourne Legacy makes do just fine without the series’ original protagonist, Jason Bourne. Taking on the lead role is Jeremy Renner (pictured) as super soldier Aaron Cross. After surviving an attempt on his life during a training exercise in Alaska, Cross embarks on a quest to find those responsible for his genetic enhancement. A fine cast, clever plot and some incredible action mean this Bourne chapter loses nothing without Damon.
Friday
The Dark Knight Rises
X2: X-Men United
Sunday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2012) Of all the superheroes, Batman arguably has the biggest cross to bear. Tormented as a child after seeing his parents killed, he spent his days trying to clean up the streets of the most dangerous city imaginable. But it all became too much after The Joker (and Heath Ledger’s frightening performance) let loose his violent games in The Dark Knight. But, after eight years of selfimposed exile, the Caped Crusader (Christian Bale, right) is enticed back to Gotham City to save it from the brutal Bane (Tom Hardy). This final instalment in director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is the darkest of the lot.
Saturday, TEN, 8.30pm, M (2003) In a decidedly darker sequel, a twist of fate sees the benevolent Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his nemesis Magneto (Ian McKellen) join forces – temporarily – to silence the sinister General Stryker (Brian Cox), who has been assigned by the US president to deal with the mutant “problem”. It’s no-holds-barred action as Wolverine (Hugh Jackman, pictured) and the sexy superheroes prime for a showdown with Stryker and his lithesome sidekick Deathstrike (Kelly Hu).

Your financial prospects take an upturn as the Sun enters your house of money and possessions, improving your economic security. It may be that you need to lay plans to ensure maximum profit. Don’t expect any swift returns from investments; rather, lay down a pattern for future growth.

Domestic life is the focus of Libra in Mercury; if you’ve been ignoring certain facts or problems – from faulty pipes to family tensions – things will surface in dramatic fashion. Pre-emptive measures ensure smooth sailing, communication and a sense of unity. Don’t let worries and insecurities get to you.

As a sensitive and emotional sign, it’s natural Scorpios feel defined by romantic connections and relationships but this month the Sun is in your sign and will encourage you to nurture your needs, individuality and personal power. Take your time with important decisions and don’t put undue pressure on yourself.

You may have difficulty navigating friendships while Mercury squares Pluto until 3 November and wreaks havoc. The Sun in your 12th house means nothing goes to plan on a social level so double-check times, dates and places. Some events will be surprisingly – eventful!
The difficult aspect from Mercury to Pluto in your money sector could prompt changes. Your comfort and security are the driving forces behind them so the sooner they’re handled the better. Now is not the time to lend or borrow. When you’re feeling down, a friend’s loyalty will touch your heart.
On the career front, you’re focused on the big picture but you’ll need to check the details. Regular regrouping over the next few weeks stops you making silly mistakes and backtracking. The journey is as vital as the destination and reveals an interesting learning ground and valuable information.

SPENDING TIME WITH MY GRANDCHILDREN “My wife Robyn and I have 15 grandchildren between us. They live in different locations around the state, so I don’t get to see them as often as I would like. Every moment I get to spend with them is very special.”
My favourite things LEMON TREE PASSAGE “We have a family holiday home at Lemon Tree Passage in Port Stephens. It is a beautiful part of the world, and we always have a wonderful time there. It’s a great place to go fishing, but my wife Robyn always seems to catch the first fish.”
CARAVANNING WITH OUR DOGS “I love to get away in the caravan with our dogs Lucy and Jackson. Lucy is from the RSPCA and is a Heinz 57 variety. Jackson came from the local animal rescue and is a Shih Tzu with an attitude problem.”
MAITLAND COMMUNITY
Peter Blackmore
“I was first elected to Council in 1980. Every time I am at a community event and meet local volunteers I feel so humbled. It is just so heartwarming to see people devoting themselves to the community without seeking reward or recognition.”
MAYOR OF THE CITY OF MAITLAND
Peter Blackmore has been a household name in Maitland since his election to Council in 1980. Mr Blackmore rose to the position of mayor in 1986, holding the role until 1990 before being elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in the seat of Maitland in 1991. After two terms in state politics, he returned to local government and was re-elected mayor in 1999, a job in which he has remained for the past 16 years. - Paul Monforte
CITIZENSHIP CEREMONIES We have the best country in the world. But it takes a lot of thought to become a citizen of a new country, I would certainly find it hard. It is so rewarding to see people walk out of citizenship ceremonies as true blue Aussies and I learn so much from meeting them.
