From the editor The A-League season is upon us again with the Newcastle Jets looking to bounce back after a tumultuous campaign which saw them finish last and win only three games. We haven’t had a great time of it lately in the Hunter as far as our football teams go with the Knights also finishing at the bottom of the ladder in 2015. However, much has changed at the Jets, with a new coaching staff headed by Scott Miller and a playing roster with plenty of changes from last year. Congratulations to local boy, Nigel Boogaard, who was earlier this week named captain of the Jets upon his return to club. Boogaard was a teenager the last time he played in the Hunter in 2004 and adds some valuable experience to the playing squad. On another note, it’s great to have someone of the stature of boxing champion Danny Green investing his time and knowledge into improving the health and fitness of the men in this region (see story on page 5). Many of us know how easy, and dangerous, it is to pile on the kilos with so much junk food readily available at affordable prices. As Danny points out, 70 per cent of Australian men are classified as overweight or obese. - Paul Monforte

A community reference group has been formed in as part of the investigation into contamination around the RAAF base at Williamtown.
Port Stephens MP hits out at government over Williamtown contamination community group ort Stephens Labor MP Kate Washington has urged the state government to install an independent chair to the Williamtown Contamination Investigation Community Reference Group following the announcement that the Department of Premier and Cabinet will fill the role. “My community has a deep distrust of every government agency that is represented on the Community Reference Group, and not without reason,” Ms Washington said.
“Because we know that state and federal agencies have known about the contamination for many years and have chosen not to share the information with residents. “Whilst there are community representatives who will also sit on the reference group, it shouldn’t be their responsibility to represent all of the affected residents. “For my community to have any faith in the processes that have been put in place, the government needs to ensure that the reference group has an independent chair
and that the community has a voice on the group.” A total of seven local community and industry representatives, including resident groups from Williamtown and Fullerton Cove, recreational fishing interests, the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council, NSW Farmers Association and local oyster and fishing primary producer representatives, are participating in the community reference group which met for the first time last week. Parliamentary Secretary for
the Hunter, Scot MacDonald said the community reference group’s first meeting had emphasised the need for clear and ready access to information for the community on the coordinated response from the Department of Defence and NSW agencies in relation to the detection of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in nearby surface water, groundwater and biota in the vicinity of the Williamtown RAAF base. “The primary aim is to provide clear community messages on progress and key strategy milestones and ensure timely responses to stakeholder and community questions,” Mr MacDonald said. The group will provide the community with details of onground investigations and strategies for addressing the contamination being devised by the Williamtown Expert Panel, led by the NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer, Professor Mary O’Kane. A webpage has been established to provide information on the community reference group’s activities - epa.nsw.gov. au/ mediainformation/ communityreference- williamtown.htm

More than 100 people filled the Gallipoli Legion Club in Hamilton for a forum held as part of the Greens NSW’s Transform Transport campaign. Attendees heard from Greens NSW spokesperson for transport, Dr Mehreen Faruqi along with Rail, Tram and Bus Union NSW branch secretary, Alex Claassens; EcoTransit co-convener, Gavin Gatenby; Newcastle Cycleways vice-president Dr Ben Ewald and Save Our Rail legal representative, Brian Kelly.
“The people of the Hunter want world-class public transport that is built for the public interest, not for private profit,” Dr Faruqi said. “There was clear interest in transport solutions that will work for people, through heavy investment in public and active transport, and retention, not removal of the heavy rail line into Newcastle. “Residents are rightly concerned that their future is being taken away from them. A common theme was that the changes happening
in Newcastle right now will have generational implications. “The NSW government should be put on notice – the Hunter will not go down without a fight to save its public transport infrastructure. The government’s revitalisation strategy is dangerously misguided and will have irreversible impacts on the viability of well-functioning public transport.” The forum was facilitated by Newcastle Greens councillor, Therese Doyle.

Danny Green wants local men to get off the couch
All aboard the Green Machine hile we all know that finding the motivation to get fit can be more than half the battle, when you’ve got Danny Green in your corner, finding the will to succeed is made that much easier. The four-time world boxing champion told Newcastle Weekly he is currently on a mission to improve men’s health in the Hunter region through his Team Danny Green Program – a personalised, eight-week app-based fitness regime that incorporates diet, exercise and and a healthy dose of motivation from the man himself. “It’s all about getting blokes off the couch and getting their mojo back,” he said. “You can still enjoy a beer or a chocolate bar at the right times within reason – the food plans are simple and, more importantly, achievable.” Inspired by what fitness guru Michelle Bridges was achieving in the female fitness market, Green added that the first seeds of the program were sewn in the most innocuous of places.

“I was actually having a beer and a pizza with a mate,” he said. “We were sitting on his couch and he was saying how he had let his fitness go and was asking me how to go about getting it back again and that got me thinking about how I could help him and more blokes get their mojo back – I mean, it’s pretty shocking to think that 70 per cent of blokes in this country are overweight or obese. Green added that it was the results he was seeing from members that inspired him to get back into the ring, after a threeyear absence, to defeat Argentinian Roberto Belonti in August this year. “They were a big inspiration to me,” he said. “Seeing guys lose 40 kilos – blokes who aren’t someone like me who has had fitness as a major part of my life for nearly all my life - change their way of thinking and produce such great results is just fantastic.” For more information on Team Danny Green, visit teamdannygreen.com.au - Stephen Bisset

Children will be able to play in the shade at the popular playground at Carmichael Park, Bellbird thanks to a grant from the Cancer Institute NSW. Cessnock City Council has received $23,000 to construct a shade sail measuring 15 by 12 metres over playground equipment. “We have identified the need to provide shade at our playgrounds,” Council’s recreation services manager, Nicole Benson said. “The project will provide visitors much needed protection from ultra violet rays.” The shade sail will cover the swing set, maypole, spring animals and provide partial shading to the rope climb and slide. Construction of the shade sail is expected to be completed by the end of year in time for the Christmas Holidays.

knows first hand the trials and tribulations of going through a cancer journey, having been diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. “I was diagnosed on 2 July 2013 with five tumours in the left breast - it was a big surprise,” Ms Stevenson said. “I ended up having a double mastectomy as I didn’t want to have a monkey on my back. “The Newcastle support network is just wonderful. When I felt ready to return to Curves, Jude was very accommodating following my treatment and encouraged me, making me feel as though I didn’t have to re-invent the wheel. Children learn to soar the heights ision-impaired children were given the opportunity to improve their physical skills in a fun, friendly and encouraging environment with a visit to the Pulse indoor rock climbing at Adamstown last week.
The climbing was part of a day-long adventure for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT clients that saw the primary-school aged children also take part in a trekking exercise using a talking GPS device and receiving clues via a mobile phone
as well as using their orientation skills to catch public transport from Kotara and Adamstown. “Getting around freely and confidently is just as important to children who have impaired vision as any other child,” regional manager for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, Belinda Carroll said. “It is for this reason that Guide Dogs NSW/ACT provides specialised services just for children with impaired vision, so they can learn how to explore their environment and better understand the world in which they live.” Pulse Climbing instructor, Chris Zaia, said the main aim for the participants was to try something different. “The children learnt basic rock climbing techniques and how to hold ropes for each other,” he said. Guide Dogs NSW/ACT assists around 450 children in the Hunter region and continues to rely on the support of the community.
Roadworks started in Union Street Newcastle City Council has begun construction works in Union Street, Cooks Hill, to calm traffic, minimise accidents and improve safety for all road users. A roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Union Street and Parry Street, and a raised pedestrian crossing and kerb extensions will replace the existing pedestrian crossing on Union Street (north of Tooke Street). Both of these projects formed part of the Hamilton South Local Area Traffic Management Plan that was endorsed by Council in 2013. The roundabout is scheduled completion by Christmas, weather permitting. The pedestrian crossing construction is to be completed in the 2015/2016 financial year.

Newcastle teen named volunteer of the year eventeen year-old Tegan Butts of Wickham was named 2015 Hunter Volunteer of the Year by the state’s peak volunteering body - The Centre for Volunteering – at Newcastle Yacht Club on Tuesday. As a volunteer with St Johns Ambulance and the Samaritans Foundation, Tegan was joined by other category winners – Olivia Kerr of Croudace Bay, Leonie Johnson of Hamilton South, Garry Stewart of Lake Macquarie and the Lake Macquarie Marine Rescue Team. CEO of The Centre for Volunteering Gemma Rygate, who runs the NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards, said volunteers improve people’s lives by helping out and keeping people connected. “New research on volunteering in Australia shows that people give more than 743 million hours of 10

their time each year – they’re the backbone of our community,” Ms Rygate said. Ms Rygate said Tegan won the regional NSW 2015 Volunteer of the Year Award for her valuable contribution to the community through St John’s Ambulance, by helping youth at the Samaritans Foundation and coaching sporting teams. “Despite experiencing difficult circumstances herself, and being a busy high school student, Tegan is always willing to volunteer with the organisations she’s involved in,” Ms Rygate said. “Tegan is an inspirational example the power of volunteering for young people. While Tegan is helping others she is also gaining skills and benefits which researchers say make us happier, healthier and give us better job prospects.”

Classic Caesar Dressing When it comes to iconic salads – none can hold a candle to the mighty Caesar. This, now legendary salad, was created by Caesar Cardini, who ran Caesar’s Place in Tijuana, Mexico – a restaurant popular with Hollywood stars like Jean Harlow and Clark Gable during the Prohibition period of the 1920’s. On a hot July 4th, 1924 with the kitchen unprepared for a full restaurant, he gathered up the ingredients he had available, tossed them together with a flourish in the
middle of the crowded restaurant and invented, almost by accident, his famous salad. With all natural ingredients, no preservatives, no added sugar and less than 1g of carbohydrates per serving, Cardini’s ‘The Original Caesar Dressing’ delivers the true taste of Caesar Salad.

With demand for her solo shows ever increasing, her band the Superjesus enjoying somewhat of a resurgence in the live arena and becoming a mentor to burgeoning Novocastrian musical talent as part of the Rosie’s School of Rock Girls Rock program, Sarah McLeod is certainly enjoying a busy 2015. he singer, a frequent visitor to our neck of the woods, will be returning this weekend offering punters a beguiling mix of her solo material, Superjesus classics and a few covers thrown in for good measure, albeit in a much
different setting – the picturesque surrounds of Milano’s on the Lake at Pelican. “I’m really looking forward to this one – it looks like such a romantic location and the menu looks fantastic,” she told Newcastle Weekly.

“My mum is actually coming to this one so is should be a lot of fun.” Equally at home on the big stages as she is in small, intimate venues, McLeod said that each hold their own particular charms. “The big stages are great because it’s all about energy and having rock and roll conversations with the crowd like ‘how y’all doin’ tonight?’ or ‘hello Newcastle, are you ready to rock?,” she laughed. “But smaller shows you can relax a little bit more, pour a wine and tell a few stories – but doing this solo thing has definitely made me a better guitar player, that’s for sure.” While the road has been McLeod’s bread and butter for some time now, she was given a stark reminder of the dangers of the Oz touring circuit last week when long-time collaborator Mick Skelton was involved in a car accident while on tour with fellow rockers Thirsty Merc. The accident, which tragically took the life of Thirsty Merc’s stage manager, put Skelton in intensive care until early last week. “I’m just so relived that Mick is out of intensive care,” she said. “It’s such a tragic thing and my thoughts are definitely with the band at this time. It really does highlight, though, how hard it is to be a touring musician in this country – I mean if you’re playing metropolitan areas you’ve got, like a ten-hour drive between gigs which can certainly take it’s toll and. Also, if you’re playing regional centres you kind of have to drive as well, so it can be really tough for bands, regardless of the level they’re at.” While definitely tragic, McLeod said that she was blown away with the outpouring of support everyone involved has received via social media channels. “It has just been so touching,” she said. ‘I was actually visiting Mick and reading some of the Facebook messages and a few tears were shed, that’s for sure. It’s really heartening to see how this awful tragedy has brought the whole Australian music community together – I guess if there was a silver lining to such a tragedy that would be it.” Sarah McLeod – Milano's on the Lake – Friday 9 October - Stephen Bisset 11

Reyne will join the Choirboys, Mark Seymour and the Undertow, the Baby Animals, Shannon Noll, Moving Pictures and Monsters of Rock for a day of nostalgic rock and roll and while the songwriter has never been one to rest on past glories he added that a few of them will pop up in the set – not surprising when you’re responsible for such classics as Boys Light Up, Reckless and Beautiful People with Australian Crawl and Hammerhead, Fall of Rome and Motor’s Too Fast in solo mode. “Obviously at a show like this you kind of have to play some of the hits, but I also released an EP this year with my band [The Magnificent Few] so we’ll probably play some new ones as well,” he said. “Things like legacy never really interested me at all – it doesn’t

factor on my radar. I mean, I’m still interested in creating new music [Reyne released his thirteenth and critically acclaimed solo album Thirteen in 2013] so it doesn’t really pay to live in the past. For me, it’s more about learning the craft of songwriting and trying to raise the creative bar.” There’s little denying that Reyne has long had the gift of the pen, creating some of the most spot-on social satire of the day. The song Beautiful People from the Aussie Crawl album Sirocco could’ve been written yesterday. “That’s very kind of you to say – you would have to update it a little bit – maybe swap out ‘Robert Palmer t-shirt’ with ‘Lady Gaga t-shirt’ – it’s funny because I’d quite fancy a Robert Palmer t-shirt these days.” - James Reyne Live at the Foreshore – Camp Shortland, Newcastle Foreshore – Sunday 1 November. liveattheforeshore.com.au - Stephen Bisset

television and we had shows that were awfully racist, sexist and homophobic and they certainly didn’t speak to me and I was actually on a path to become a lawyer,” he said. “It wasn’t really until I went to America and met a woman who told me I should give it a go. I was reluctant but I got back to London and saw that she had opened a comedy club – I went along and saw that there was this whole comedy scene that did speak to me and, suffice to say I was hooked.” He added that he has become more willing to takes risks with his comedy over the course of his career. “In the beginning I just told jokes – you know the funny guy waving the jazz hands around – but, as I became more confident I started including a bit more semi-autobiographical stuff and then I realised that if you have a captive audience, why not try to make them think while they are having a laugh?” - Stephen K Amos – Belmont 16s – Friday 9 October, Wests Nelson Bay – Saturday 10 October, Wests New Lambton – Sunday 11 October. - Stephen Bisset

aving already had a large percentage of Australians in stitches for the Melbourne, Perth and Sydney Comedy festivals earlier this year, UK comedian Stephen K Amos is bringing his critically acclaimed Welcome to My World show back to Oz with a string of regional dates added to the itinerary. Amos has been a frequent visitor to our shores however, he told Newcastle Weekly he never ceases to be surprised by our land and it’s people. “Coming down here, something always manages to surprise me - this time it’s the fact that I’m currently in Melbourne and I’ve just learned that it’s a public holiday for the football grand final which is quite surprising and the second one is that you’ve had yet another change of prime minister, although I’m sure comedians around the world, including me, are mourning the loss of Tony Abbott as he provided quite a lot of material,” he said. Amos, a regular fixture at comedy festivals around the world, said that a career in comedy just wasn’t on his radar in his formative years. ‘I grew up in 1970s London and most of the comedy I was exposed to was through the
Drew Wilson in action with the Very Hungry Caterpillar.
A HUNGRY CLASSIC FROM THE PAGE TO THE STAGE or ex-pat Novocastrian Drew Wilson, the opportunity to return to perform on home soil is always an enticing one. The actor, whose pervious credits include the critically acclaimed stage production The War Horse,. Baz Luhrmann’s production of Midsummer Nights Dream and a stint on the ABC TV show Crownies will return to the region to celebrate one of the best-loved children’s books of all time The Very Hungry Caterpillar. “It’s always great to be back home and the Civic Theatre is such a great venue and this is a great little show that has just been going from strength to strength since we premiered at the Sydney Festival in January.” Based on Eric Carle’s iconic book about a bug with an insatiable appetite, the show also includes characters from three more of Carle’s books Mr Seahorse, The Very Lonely Firefly and ‘The Artist Who Painted A Blue Horse and Wilson said the
colourful simplicity that was one of the enduring qualities of Carle’s work has been translated faithfully to the stage, although, with 75 puppets to wrangle, there’s barely a spare moment backstage and front of house. Celebrating its 45th anniversary this year The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of the best known children’s books of all time, and Wilson said it was the simplicity of storytelling, coupled with those colourful and instantly recognisable illustrations that had seen the character endure. “Again it comes back to simplicity, I think. The way that the book presents concepts in a way that is easy for kids to grasp is just brilliant and definitely a reason why it keeps getting passed down through the generations.” The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show – Civic Theatre – Friday 9 October, Saturday 10 October. civictheatrenewcastle.com.au - Stephen Bisset
Hopontopofus brings the funny If you’re looking for some laugh-out-loud comedy and a truly delicious meal, then get along to Max’s Restaurant and Bar in Hamilton this Friday and every Friday until Christmas to catch Greek international ‘stupidstar’ Carlos Hopontopofus in action. From humble beginnings at the iconic Wog Rock Café, Hopontopofus has become one of Newcastle's favorite entertainers. In his stand up comedy show he muddles his way through the English language in a crazy comedy musical extravaganza that does not shy away from a bit of audience participation. Performing from some very large corporate engagements to the home backyard parties, Carlos will most certainly make your night one to remember. Carlos Hopontopofus will be at Max’s Restaurant and Bar on Friday 9 October and every Friday until Christmas. 15

Café manage Karen Soper told Newcastle Weekly. “We serve about 130 disadvantaged and homeless people for lunch every day so, we’ve linked in with some great restaurants around town who are all giving their time for free. It’s all about feeding your soul as well as your stomach.” Ms Soper said while food played a large part in what Soul Café does, clients are able to access a raft of services at the centre and all money raised on the day will ensure their continuation. “Our main focus here is the food side of things – all of the food is donated, we’re not government-funded so we rely heavily on

The money that will be raised on the day will go directly back into funding these programs so it is definitely a worthy cause.” The festival, a great way to see in the warmer months, will also offer up more than a few surprises - gastronomic and otherwise. “It’s basically going to be like a really long lunch - like a village feast,” Ms Soper said. “All of the food will be laid down the centre of the tables and all of the restaurants are contributing a different dish - we’re having an oyster schucking bar, a dessert bar, lots of quirky entertainment and more than a few surpises so it will be a really vibrant fun day out.

HOW TO ENTERTAIN ON A BUDGET he role of hostess is a blast, but spending a lot of money to bring everything together isn’t always feasible. With a little ingenuity and some helpful tips, you’ll be well on your way to pulling off a top-notch soiree.
Select a theme You don’t have to go overboard here as it can be more distracting than enjoyable. Select a simple theme like spring floral and utilise the garden or create tissue paper pom poms, for example. This will keep it clean and also means you don’t have to go out and buy a flurry of decorations.

PICK OF THE WEEK The Bourne Identity Friday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2002) After decades of spy thrillers involving girls, gadgets and little else, the genre received a shot in the arm from director Doug Liman courtesy of this adaptation of the Robert Ludlum bestseller. The riveting yarn kicks off with the discovery of amnesiac Jason Bourne (Matt Damon, pictured) by a crew of Italian fishermen. Given no clues to his identity except for the bullet holes in his back and the Swiss bank account number implanted in his hip, the talented Mr Bourne embarks on a mission to discover who he is.

Saturday, SBS, 8.30pm, MA15+ (2013) Be prepared to see Matthew McConaughey (right) like never before – shockingly gaunt, in a performance that landed him an Oscar. McConaughey tells the true story of Ron Woodroof, a homophobic Texas cowboy who is shocked to discover he has AIDS and only a month to live. Even more shocked by his limited treatment options, he sets out on a mission to acquire the expensive drugs he, and others, desperately need. When he meets fellow sufferer Rayon (a crossdressing Jared Leto), Ron is forced to confront his prejudices. A film bursting with stellar performances.
Thursday, GO!, 9.30pm, MA15+ (2012) Director Jay Roach (Meet The Parents) takes aim at the orchestrated and absurd world of American politics in his latest slapstick romp. In a return to form, Will Ferrell (pictured) plays overly competitive Republican congressman Cam Brady, who, after an incident, finds his path to re-election hampered by a new candidate, the effeminate Marty (Zach Galifianakis). With overthe-top political ads, mud-slinging and tawdry point-scoring with the public, Roach turns the dirtiness of this world into laugh-out-loud fodder.

Pluto continues to make its way through her 4th house, the part of her chart connected with the home and family, and will bring big changes on this front. She may find herself considering a move of home to somewhere very different to where she is living now.

STARS OF THE SCREEN IN NEW RELEASE Learning To Drive stars Academy Award nominee Patricia Clarkson and Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley in a dramatic comedy about an improbable friendship. Wendy Shields is a book editor from New York facing a marriage crisis. Darwan Singh Tur is a driving instructor from India with an abiding respect for tradition. When Wendy sets out to reclaim her independence, she hits a unique roadblock - she
never learned to drive. She hires Darwan, a driving instructor and part-time cab driver, to teach her. They form an unlikely bond that inspires each to embrace the laughter, freedom, and strength that comes with starting anew. The film premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and was voted firstrunner up for the People’s Choice Award. Learning To Drive is in cinemas from October 8.

NEWCASTLE’S CREATIVE SECTOR “Most of my recent work has been outside the Hunter region, but my passion for my home town and the wider Hunter region has resulted in me, with fellow Good Eye Deer producer, Olivia Olley, creating The Production Hub. The Pro Hub is located in the Newcastle CBD and is home to experienced creative and professional businesses. Many of the people working from The Pro Hub either run a small business or work with larger organisations in Sydney. The Pro Hub offers a professional environment for practitioners who would otherwise work from home. We provide premium office space for a great range of people”.
My favourite things FAMILY AND FRIENDS “At the end of each day, it’s really important to know that your family is the most important part of each and every day. I am so fortunately and grateful to have a wonderful family with a son at uni and a daughter just about to graduate high school – I’m just so proud of both of them. I’m grateful to have a loving partner and friends who add so much value to my life.”
TRAVEL “My creative approach is inspired by my surroundings and while balancing business ownership and family commitments I make time to travel. Most recently I travelled to South America where I trekked the Inca Rivers and experienced the juxtaposed worlds of natural and ancient beauty against the modern impacts of poverty, wealth and tourism”.
Gavin Banks CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF GOOD EYE DEER VIDEO PRODUCTION COMPANY
Gavin Banks is a multi-award winning filmmaker with almost 20 years experience in his field. After completing a degree in Communication Studies at the University of Newcastle, Gavin worked in the media as a news cameraman before moving into production. In 1998 he established the video production company, Good Eye Deer. At Good Eye Deer, Gavin’s integrity and professionalism is evident in the delivery of his work which has won the company state, national and international awards for outstanding work in the corporate and educational video sector.
SOCIAL JUSTICE “We’ve produced commercials or promotional videos for charitable organisations such as PCYC NSW, Lions Clubs Australia and The Salvation Army.”
EDUCATION “One of the key pillars of the Good Eye Deer philosophy and business approach is my desire to work in collaboration with clients and creative partners to make films that matter and work. Many of the films I make tackle some of society’s most challenging themes and include educational pieces around road behaviours, campaigns to improve homelessness and promotional projects that raise awareness of the needs of people of all abilities.”
