This week...
From the editor The famous Melbourne Cup is fast approaching for another year – a time when everyone suddenly becomes a horse form expert. Having a background working in the racing industry, family members would rely on my supposed insider’s knowledge to help them find the winner. It never seemed to work though - I can’t remember the last time I managed to select the successful galloper. Many years ago, I would sit down and study the field, working out why each horse could or couldn’t win. Those were the days before half the runners were from overseas. Now it’s almost impossible to line-up the strength of a race in France or Germany. You have to congratulate Victorians for giving themselves a public holiday on Melbourne Cup and also recently adding ‘Friday before the AFL grand final’ as another day off for workers. Of course, I’m only speaking out of pure jealousy, though. Congratulations also to the Newcastle Jets for their first-up victory over the Wellington Phoenix. No doubt they were inspired by seeing our cover all over the Hunter region last week featuring five of their players! Now it’s a matter of backing it up against glamour club, Sydney FC. - Paul Monforte

The updated concept design for the future extension of the M1 Pacific Motorway to Raymond Terrace
Motorway extension moves a step closer with updated design ort Stephens Council general manager Wayne Wallis has welcomed a revised concept design for a future extension of the M1 Pacific Motorway to Raymond Terrace as a sign the project is progressing. A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said a project design from 2010 had recently been reviewed and improved with the road alignment moved further north between Black Hill and Tomago and would include a new 2.6-kilometre bridge across the Hunter River and floodplain. “The change in alignment means a new major interchange can be included at Tarro to improve traffic flow and connectivity between the M1 Pacific Motorway, New England Highway and
John Renshaw Drive,” the spokesperson said. Mr Wallis said the route for the extension was already reserved in the Port Stephens Local Environmental Plan. “This is a project Council has been advocating for since initial planning and investigations began more than a decade ago because of the potential it has to drive economic development in Port Stephens,” he said. “One of the many advantages of Tomago, Heatherbrae and Raymond Terrace to prospective new industries is their proximity to major transport links, in particular air and road. “An extension of the M1 to Raymond Terrace will improve connectivity between the M1 and the Pacific Highway between the North Coast
and Sydney, reduce travel times and delays for motorists and allow better flow for freight.” Community members are invited to dropin sessions to speak directly to the Roads and Maritime Services project team at MarketPlace Shopping Centre Raymond Terrace between 3pm and 7pm on Thursday 15 October and Stockland Shopping Centre Green Hills between 10am and 2pm on Saturday 17 October. The plans for the project can also be viewed at Council’s administration building, 116 Adelaide Street, Raymond Terrace. To learn more about the changes or to provide feedback, call 1800 094 895, email M1RT@jacobs. com or visit rms.nsw.gov.au/m1rt
Concern over lacklustre response to free training courses Local organisation Hunter Valley Training Company (HVTC) has expressed surprise in the lack of interest and uptake for two, fee-free, introductory trades programs due to begin later this month. HVTC will run two separate six-week courses in Electrotechnology and Manufacturing – Mechanical and Fabrication which are funded through the 2015 Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program under the NSW Department of Industry’s State Training Services. The courses collectively provide for 30 students. “With the current high youth unemployment 4
rate, particularly in the Hunter region, I am astonished that these fully-funded courses are struggling to attract applicants,” HVTC CEO Sharon Smith said. “These training programs provide young people with some basic skills and industry knowledge which can be a definite advantage when it comes to employers selecting firstyear apprentices.” Depending on the course, in-class modules cover areas including workplace health and safety, basic hand skills, routine work activities and computing
technology. The programs also incorporate 15 days of work placement with local firms. “This preliminary training is an excellent way for young people who are considering a career in trades to really find out what’s involved and if they are suited to such an occupation,” Ms Smith said. “It also demonstrates to prospective employers that they are motivated and willing to learn.” Anyone interested in applying for the pre-apprenticeship programs can contact HVTC on 4932 4184 or register their interest at hvtc.com.au/jobs

Helping the Hunter’s youngsters achieve dreams ariety – the Children’s Charity NSW is calling for nominations for deserving young individuals from the Hunter region for its Future Kids Scholarship Program. The scholarships are awarded annually to children in NSW and the ACT who are disadvantaged or living
with a disability, to help them realise their full potential in sport, education or the arts by covering costs of tuition, equipment, competition fees or courses up to $5,000 each. Tam Johnston, CEO of Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW said she was thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to children
who might otherwise not have the financial means to develop their skills and talent. “We’re also grateful to be able to provide more scholarships in 201516 thanks to a $50,000 grant from Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation,” Ms Johnston said. Hunter-based 2015 Paralympic Swimmer of the Year, Maddi Elliott is a current Future Kids Scholarship recipient. Applicants must be under the age of 19 and be Australian citizens or have permanent resident status. They must also demonstrate a significant degree of talent and a genuine need for assistance. Applications can be made online at variety.org.au.nsw until Friday 30 October. Successful applicants will be announced in December and invited to attend an official presentation early in 2016.
Call for community to unite against weeds Port Stephens Council is encouraging local residents to help make a difference in reducing weed spread in the region. A Weed Blitz weekend on 17 and 18 October is being held to get the community involved in weed control initiatives on both public and privately-owned land. An information stall will be set up on Butterwick Road, Butterwick from 9am on Saturday 17 October and Sunday 18 October with Council staff on hand to provide information about weed identification and control. Skip bins will be available to help those involved get rid of their weed waste. For more information on the Weed Blitz weekend, contact Eva Twarkowski on 4978 4029 or 0411 570 876.

Alesco Senior College is run by WEA Hunter (Workers Educational Association Hunter) and offers young people, struggling to find success in a mainstream system, the opportunity to re-evaluate their situation and achieve success in a smaller and more supportive environment. Alesco’s Grant Dennis was one of 15 teachers across Australia to receive a Commonwealth Bank Teaching Award that supports existing or new financial education initiatives. The college’s existing café program is currently run by students one day a week at the Laman Street campus. The winning proposal outlined plans to expand the program by purchasing a mobile coffee cart,

a smartphone app for pre-orders and point-of-sale software to help manage the business. “Most of the students come to us with very low financial literacy skills and expanding our small enterprise would better equip them to gain skills in paying bills online and ordering stock through price negotiations,” Mr Dennis said. “The prizemoney will allow us to potentially take our café venture out of the school environment and into the wider community.” WEA Hunter general manager and principal of Alesco Senior College, Rowan Radvan, said the award reflected the outstanding quality of teachers and programs the school currently provides. “This is a great coup for Alesco and a wonderful opportunity to engage our students in front-line money matters that will help them make well-informed financial decisions now and throughout their lives,” Ms Radvan said.

Embrace Life festival local ambassador, Karen Quant.
EMBRACING THE SPIRIT OF WELLBEING he grounds of the Newcastle Jockey Club will be filled with a vibrant mix of health and wellbeing workshops on Sunday 18 October for the Embrace Life festival.
The festival was founded in Sydney in 2011 by a small group of industry participants, with the resulting popularity seeing the event expanded to Wollongong, the
Central Coast and Newcastle. The day features experimental workshops including music, yoga, meditation and sound healing and many informative sessions around natural health. Embrace Life founder, Deborah Shepherd said she was looking forward to the Newcastle festival as the local community had a diverse and talented group of wellness businesses, artists and musicians. “Whenever we open up our festivals, the energy is vibrant and alive; abuzz with people exhibiting, collaborating and making connections within their local community that will remain beyond the actual event,” Mrs Shepherd said. “We have done more than 20 festivals since 2011 and each festival has its own energy, as it is all about the local business and what they have to creatively express through their business, their artwork, share through information and their
healing music.” Local ambassador, owner of Boori Boori Labyrinth in Bucca Wauka, Karen Quant, said local businesses had responded strongly to the concept that showcases what Newcastle has to offer in the creative and wellness area. “The Jockey Club is ideal, allowing a wonderful flow between the various elements of the festival including musical performances from local talent, workshops, wellness exhibitions and displays and workshops for the kids,” she said. The Newcastle Embrace Life festival will be held from 10.30am to 5.30pm at the Newcastle Jockey Club, Darling St, Broadmeadow. Early-bird entrance tickets can be purchased for $10 from embracelifelivelife.com.au until Saturday 17 October. General admission entry after that date will be $15. - Paul Monforte

Jets fly out of the blocks to topple Phoenix he Newcastle Jets’ unexpected victory over the Wellington Phoenix has set-up an early-
season A-League blockbuster against Sydney FC at Hunter Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
While the bookmakers’ odds suggested the Jets would struggle across the Tasman, coach Scott Miller said his side were confident of a strong showing. “We know we can play much better, but we expected to win and showed pure endeavour to get the result we wanted,” he said. “We set up in a certain way today and stuck to the task”. Veteran David Carney, who found himself on the outer last season under former coach Phil Stubbins, was a standout for the Jets, scoring from a header in the 30th minute before setting-up what proved to be the matchwinner for Milos Trifunovic with 20 minutes remaining. Goalkeeper Mark Birighitti also proved to be a hero for the visitors with a successful save of a penalty early in the second half. Newcastle’s defence was
noticeably tighter than in last season’s campaign in which 55 goals were conceded. That new-found resolve will face a stern test against Sydney’s front line of Filip Holosko, Milos Ninkovic, Shane Smeltz and Alex Brosque. Sydney’s season began with a 1-1 draw against Melbourne City in a match featuring plenty of end-toend action. The Jets, however, will take on Sydney without captain Nigel Boogaard who was sent off after receiving two yellow cards against the Phoenix. Saturday’s match against Sydney FC kicks off at 5.15pm. Tickets are available for prepurchase online at ticketmaster. com.au or by calling 136 100. Call Ticketmaster for locations of their retail outlets across the Hunter. - Paul Monforte

A CELEBRATION OF ALL THINGS ELVIS hen it comes to the cult of personality in the world of showbusiness, nobody looms as large as Elvis Presley. Some 38 years after Presley shuffled off this mortal coil, hordes of ersatz Elvii from around the globe are still flying the flag for the man they call the King.
This region, certainly no stranger to the lure of the King, will play host, later this month, to a an epic, Elvis-filled weekend of music, memories and all the hits from the granddaddy of rock and roll. After a mammoth inaugural hit out last year, the Hunter Elvis Festival has now expanded to

three venues across the region - Belmont 16s, Club Macquarie at Argenton and the Lost in the 50s museum at Cameron Park - and organiser Sheldon Kidd told Newcastle Weekly that some of this country’s best Elvis tribute acts would be getting Hunter fans all shook up. “It was a bit of a learning curve last year, but we had a great time and this year is going to be even bigger and better,” he said. “The main event will be Mark Andrew and his show Elvis Leaves his Mark at Belmont 16s - this guy is just amazing, you’ll just sit there pinching yourself thinking you’re watching the real thing.” “We’ve also got a great tribute to close the show - We Three Kings - that features three brilliant performers - Carmine Camillo, Allan Wright, and [2015 Mo Award winner] Wayne Cooper as well as an Elvis singalike competition [where budding hound dogs can compete for more that $1500 in cash and prizes].” While Elvis will hold centre stage for the duration of the festival, Kidd added that there would also be a slew of non-Elvis activities for the whole family to enjoy. “We’ll also be having a show and shine with more that 100 hot rods on display at [retro museum] Lost in the ‘50s - all of which look amazing - we’ve got close to 100 market stalls featuring both Elvis and non-Elvis items and plenty of kids’ entertainment. There’ll be something for everyone.” For Kidd, it is the depth of Presley’s catalogue, his magnetic personality and undeniable talent that has seen him endure for so long. “The depth in his music is just unbelievable there was just so much talent there,” he said. “He was also a bit of what they call a triple threat - people often panned him for his acting but, looking back on some of those movies, he really could. He was just a super cool guy.” The Hunter Elvis Festival will be on from Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November. For more information and a complete program of events, visit hunterelvisfestival.com.au - Stephen Bisset 19

A CITIZEN OF THE PEOPLE ot on the heels of the success of his 2014 mini album Destruktion, Citizen Kay certainly has a lot going on. The Canberra-based rapper is on the cusp of releasing his long-awaited debut long player With The People and if the lead single Wax On Wax Off is anything to go by, it’s going to be a groove-laden affair with more hooks than a fisherman’s tacklebox. If that wasn’t enough, he is about to embark on a national headline tour, in support of the forthcoming album and was recently recognised with an ARIA nomination for best urban album for Destruktion. “Yeah man, there’s been so much going on lately that I’ve basically just been sitting here in disbelief,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “Especially the ARIA nomination – I mean, even to be considered is just awesome and to be nominated with the likes of Seth Sentry, The Meeting Tree and Tuka is rad because I just love all those guys.” However, whatever goals Destruktion has kicked for the

rapper, don’t go thinking he is content to rest on his creative laurels. “I don’t like to be painted into a corner when it comes to styles and things like that,” he said. “When I release something that’s basically it – I let it go and start working on the next thing. I’m the kind of artist who loves trying new things and I think if you spend too much time judging what you’ve done in the past, it’s harder to do that.” If Destruktion made people sit up and take notice of Citizen Kay’s dexterous wordplay and earworm-worthy hooks, then With the People promises to take the up and coming rapper to the next level. “Basically, Destruktion was a sampling of all the tracks that I had done over the past two years but With the People was approached more as a complete project so I was a lot more concerned with how everything flowed. I think it’s a much deeper, much more cohesive record.” Citizen Kay – Bar on the Hill, Newcastle University – Thursday 22 October. - Stephen Bisset

BECOMING KATIE NOONAN
“The songs were written over the last five years since my last big band album [ Emperor’s Box] and I had experienced quite a lot since then and it was cathartic looking back on all of those personal changes.” Never one to paint herself into a musical corner, Noonan said that she still finds limitless wonder in the art of songwriting. “The possibilities are endless and I find that really exciting,” she said. “The beauty of this craft is that there is always stuff to learn.” Katie Noonan – Spicers Vineyard Estate, Pokolbin – Sunday 8 November. - Stephen Bisset

hile it’s obviously an exciting time for ethereal singer Katie Noonan, with a national tour with her band Katie Noonan’s Vanguard to promote her latest album Transmutant, it’s a proposition made even more exciting with the prospect of a Hunter Valley show. “I love coming to that part of the world because my mum was from Newcastle and my nan still lives there so it’s always extra special getting back to visit her,” Noonan told Newcastle Weekly. Having just finished a three-week stint with the Sydney Dance Company and the Australian Chamber Orchestra for their Tryptich project, the eclectic singer said she couldn’t wait to get back into band mode. “My first love will always be presenting my own stuff and I’ve been doing a lot of solo stuff and other projects so I really had been missing being a part of that band dynamic.” Her latest album Transmutant is a densely layered and carefully considered affair and, lyrically, as the title suggests is replete with musings on life, love, loss with an overarching feeling of self-awareness.

HOW TO: INFUSE FLOWERS INTO THE HOME e use flowers in home décor mainly to add texture, colour and heavenly scents around the house and also to bring a little bit of Mother Nature inside. Here are some tips to achieve the perfect look for your home.
Create areas of floral interest Group together smaller flowers. For example, posies on coffee or side tables with objects such as books, prints or craft accents.
Display We are well beyond the days where we strictly gravitate towards crystal vases. Try the ever-popular Mason jar, an old tea box, or even wrapping a vase in brown paper and tying with string. If it’s waterproof, try it.

Not just flowers Look beyond the petals. Try a jar filled with a fragrant herb, like rosemary. It will add a great scent to the house while also creating an easily accessible source of herbs when cooking.
Fresh cuts There is nothing like freshly cut flowers, however a luxury they may be. Being a known mood booster, place a bunch next to the bed to make every morning a good morning.
Experiment with colour Floral arrangements are the perfect way to experiment with colour combinations within your home décor. Peonies, calla lillies, sunflowers and dahlias are perfect to brighten up an otherwise dull space.

PICK OF THE WEEK Bee Movie Saturday, 7MATE, 7pm, G (2007) Comedian Jerry Seinfeld buzzes onto the big screen in this animated feature about everything – everything related to the world of bees, that is. Seinfeld, who wrote the film, voices its hero Barry B. Benson (pictured), a free-spirited bee who shuns his role in the honey-making process to broaden his horizons beyond his busy hive. After falling in love with Vanessa Bloome (Renée Zellweger), Barry is horrified to find supermarkets selling honey. This hilarious tale more than lives up to the buzz.
Friday
The Bourne Supremacy
We’re The Millers
Friday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2004) Amnesiac former assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon, right) is a man of very few words in this sequel to The Bourne Identity. Preferring to let his actions do the talking, Bourne has revenge on his mind after his peaceful life in hiding is disturbed by covert operatives of the CIA who have framed him for murder. A CIA agent (Joan Allen) insists upon smoking Bourne out, despite the warnings of her boss (Brian Cox). Director Paul Greengrass (United 93) retains the look and feel of the original, although the hand-held camera work is a little nauseating. All in all, it beats the life out of most Bond films.
Thursday, GO!, 9.30pm, MA15+ (2013) It’s crass, contrived and crude, but if you’re looking for a lowbrow comedy with plenty of laughs, this is it. Jason Sudeikis plays David, a small-time drug dealer who winds up in debt to his supplier (Ed Helms) and is talked into transporting a shipment of marijuana from Mexico back to the US. Sudeikis ropes in his stripper neighbour (Jennifer Anniston, pictured), a wannabe customer (Will Poulter) and a streetwise teen (Emma Roberts) to pose as family on an innocent roadtrip to dodge the authorities.

Zac’s Libran sun sign makes him not only a team player when it comes to his acting career, but he also shows an interest in politics and helping humanity – two spheres that will open up for him in the next 12 months as Jupiter, the luck bringer of the zodiac, works its way through his 12th house. Saturn is working its way through his house of thinking and he will have some brilliant inspirations, especially with his career.

You and your lover have a great
With the focus on home and family, this is the ideal time to catch up with loved ones you haven't seen for a while. You have underestimated how much you've been missing one another. Be a great friend and be sensitive when your BFF texts you about her tough week.
There’ll be substantial progress with an important long-term project and a lucky break will reward your efforts. Also, be very careful of making a martyr of yourself as you may put yourself out for others, only to find that they are unappreciative of your sacrifices.
Mercury is in a negative aspect with Pluto so be very careful of misplacing important paperwork. If you’re waiting on something to be delivered, you’ll find that it’s been delayed or sent to the wrong address, so be sure to check everything twice before signing off on it.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
Mars is opposing Neptune in your house of home and family indicating there’s likely to be a tense time on the emotional front, revealing a clash of interests between you and the family. It's high time you had a good talk to bring hidden resentments and frustrations into the open.
You may think you speak with a reasoned, clear voice but your emotional intensity will show through. You are also likely to take well intended criticism the wrong way, so focus on the big picture and don't be overly sensitive about perceived slights. Make extra time for rest.
Jupiter in your 8th house indicates that there may be some good news about a joint financial matter that puts both you and your partner in a happy and contented frame of mind. It will inspire you to set your sights high with a financial venture.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
Mercury squares Saturn and you'll need to watch what you say as it will come out wrong and you could cause misunderstandings all around. Don't sign anything important without checking it carefully and don't buy any large or expensive items as they are likely to be faulty.
Mars in your 10th house allows you to focus on your career and extra money should be coming your way; this is something you will work for, rather than a windfall. If you've been considering applying for a promotion or establishing a new business, now is the time.
Jupiter is in your partnership house indicating that you and your partner will be investing extra energy into your relationship. This could range from taking up a sporting hobby together to some other kind of shared interest. Business partnerships will also benefit from this planetary aspect.
deal to talk over and now that Mercury has gone direct, it is the ideal time to do it. If you are in the early stages of a relationship, you will find that you share a great deal in common.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21 At work, if you focus and keep your nose to the grindstone you will achieve your aims more quickly and efficiently than usual. You might receive some kind of formal reward for past efforts, but it’s equally possible you will simply feel satisfied with a job well done.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 The difficult aspect between Venus and Pluto heightens your affections; being fond of someone is one thing, but feeling obsessive is quite another. Keep a measure of common sense and you won't go far wrong, but give in to your impulses and you’ll find yourself in trouble.

PEST CONTROL
VARIETY BASH “I do three bashes a year, in Newcastle, Sydney and New Zealand. We go out in the cars around rural areas, visit schools during recess and lunch and provide a grant to the school. I actually started the Variety Bash entertainment shows at the schools 16 years ago.”
MY THREE SUPERCARS “I use these in my stunt shows, which always guarantees a laugh. I belong to ‘All Shook Up Car Club’ where between around 40 of us we have 70 cars! To be a member you have to partake in the all shook up dance club as well, its always enjoyable spending time with them.”
My favourite things YACHTING/SAILING “I love going out sailing with my mates. I own my own yacht which is named ‘Windsong’ that I keep down at Royal Motor Yacht Club Toronto, I love taking the boat out on Lake Macquarie.”
KIDS SHOWS “I love doing the kids shows, they are just wild, kids screaming with excitement, as well as the adult shows which is more adult stand up comedy along with magic. Adult shows would have to be my favourite, I do a lot of 21st, 40th, 50th and 60th birthdays.”
HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS
Super Hubert NEWCASTLE’S OWN SUPER HERO
Multi-award-winning local comedy magician Super Hubert wants it known that the rumours are wrong – he has definitely not retired. For more than 35 years Super Hubert has been bringing smiles to the faces of people young and old with his crazy antics and comedy magic shows, Super is a well-known icon amongst Newcastle children’s entertainment. “I’d do anything for a laugh,” he says.
“I enjoy going to functions and just hanging out with my bash friends, in fact ten of us are off to Hawaii for a week cruise, this ill be my first time going to Hawaii.”
