From the editor Chia is all the rage in this week’s Newcastle Weekly and I’m sure you’ll agree that our cover looks almost good enough to eat with those berries on top. I like the idea of blending the seeds into a puddling-like consistency to give your children (or yourself for that matter) more vitamins from food. I know my kids don’t like eating a lot of fish and chia seeds are a great way to get some Omega-3 fatty acids into them. I was also very interested to learn more about the Crack Theatre Festival which is on in Newcastle until October 4. It’s a great initiative to see theatre, dance, circus and comedy being planned for unusual spaces such as loading docks, outside buildings and in vacant shops – and it’s all free of charge. I did, however, do a bit of a double take when the organisers told me about one of the performances taking place in a car! For our over-55 readers, we have a four-page feature with the latest news and information for those in retirement or heading towards it. We are also lucky enough to have one of Australia’s best songwriters Richard Clapton in town at Lake Macquarie Yacht Club this weekend. Check out Stephen Bisset’s interview on page 13. - Paul Monforte

he Newcastle Tourism Industry Group (NTIG), in partnership with Newcastle City Council, has launched its Visitor Economy Vision for the city with the aim of bringing together all stakeholders. NTIG Chairman, Matthew Anderson said the document provided a plan to unite tourism operators, local government and broader industries to work on seizing the opportunities available and to identify the catalyst projects that could drive progress. “The vision we have launched represents our ongoing efforts to develop a unified voice for Newcastle’s visitor economy which will connect the industry, engage with networks globally and create signature experiences

for the city,” Mr Anderson said. “Tourism is everybody’s business and we believe that all development and planning must take the additional time and make the effort to ensure that the visitor experience is not only considered but maximised.” The Vision identifies four key growth priorities – business events, major events, visiting friends and relatives and leisureled growth. Tourism remains a growing sector in Newcastle which welcomes more than 1.3 million visitors a year. On any one day, more than 18,000 people are staying overnight and spending around $1 million a day in the city. The full Visitor Economy Vision can be viewed at ntig.org.au
Representatives from across the Hunter Valley wine region have joined forces in an alliance aimed at doubling overnight visitor expenditure by 2020. Minister for Regional Development, John Barilaro visited Pokolbin to launch the Hunter Valley Wine and Tourism Alliance, which feature representatives from Cessnock and Singleton councils, the Hunter Valley Wine and Tourism Association as well as local wine and tourism stakeholders. The alliance will be chaired by former Minister for Tourism, George Souris. “International tourists will be encouraged to travel due to the strength of the Australian dollar, domestic tourists will be encouraged to tour within Australia and we must all ensure we pursue excellence and the world’s best practice to ensure the Hunter is at the forefront of the NSW economy,” Mr Souris said.
Crack Theatre Festival co-artistic directors, Hannah Strout and Finn O’Branagáin.
Filling all the little cracks with artistic wonders acant spaces in Newcastle will be transformed into a mix of colour, light and sound for the ninth annual Crack Theatre Festival from October 1 to 4. Presented as part of the This is Not Art festival, Crack Theatre
is an avenue for both emerging and established artists to present innovative works, all free of charge to audiences in non-traditional theatre spaces. Festival co-artistic director, Hannah Strout told Newcastle
Weekly that the organisers had, like in previous years, found a number of unique locations. “There will be a performance in Pacific Park and another one outside Custom House - we’ve got some going on in office spaces, loading docks, cars,” Ms Strout said. “This year, we are really lucky to have received funding from both the Australia Council for the Arts and Arts NSW, which has put us in a really great position to do things like pay us a small fee for the work that we do. However in the past eight years everyone has been a volunteer.” The Crack Theatre Festival program is available from cracktheatrefest.com/crack-theatrefestival-2015 Additional information can be found at thisisnotart.org - Paul Monforte

Back-to-back netball titles for Newcastle Hunter Division 1 winners Newcastle claimed their second consecutive InterRegional State League titles after defeating Orange, 47-35, in Sunday’s grand final in Sydney. Newcastle head coach Maria Hoad said the second victory felt sweeter after the team had enjoyed a strong season. “The girls have trained really hard across the last two years that I’ve been involved with the side, and they’ve experienced a really successful 2015 season which has been capped off with today’s win,” she said. “To win the Hunter Regional State League and come here [to InterRegional] and have tough, hard-fought competition all weekend has been really great – the girls have really stepped it up when they’ve been challenged, they play well together and really enjoy each other’s company”.

Premiership-winning Knights look ahead to next challenge he Newcastle Knights NSW Cup side have put their grand final party to one side in preparation for their State Championship clash with the Ipswich Jets prior to the NRL grand final on Sunday afternoon. Newcastle captured the NSW Cup title with a 20-10 victory over the Wyong Roos at Pirtek Stadium in Parrramatta last weekend and now take on the Jets, who won the Queensland version of the competition, the Intrust Super Cup. on grand final day in front of a large crowd. Knights coach Matt Lantry said the victory had provided an enormous sense of satisfaction. “Eight weeks ago, we weren’t thinking grand final, we were thinking where are we going to get our next player from,” Lantry said. “Fifty players have been used and every single one of them has played their part whether they have played one game or played all season”. Sunday’s match against Ipswich kicks off at 3.40pm and will be televised live on NBN. - Paul Monforte
Maitland City Council will shortly receive notification on the success or otherwise on their request for $5.5 million of funding from the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund to improve the Maitland Regional Sportsground Complex. The project, estimated at $10.5 million, would see an international standard athletics centre constructed, featuring a 400m synthetic track; long jump; high jump; discus; javelin; pole vault; hammer throw; sprints and hurdles; clubhouse (pavilion) and associated facilities; flood lighting and parking. The remaining $5 million would be funded by Council.

A plan to unlock home capital has been mooted for seniors.
HOME CAPITAL RELEASE PLAN GAINING TRACTION they’re financially penalised despite owning the same amount of assets. “This is a huge deterrent and reduces the housing options available to senior Australians. It can also have the knock-on effect of reducing the amount of care they can purchase. “Removing penalties on downsizing would reduce the number of senior Australians who feel ‘trapped’ in an unsuitable home, enabling them to move and invest in more in-home services, preserving their independence for much longer. “Property Council research, conducted by Grant Thornton, forecasts a doubling in the number of residents wanting to live in a retirement village in the next decade, so there is clearly a desire by many senior Australians to pursue the downsizing option. “We strongly support the new Treasurer’s comments and look forward to seeing policy changes in this crucial social and economic policy area.”

he Property Council of Australia has applauded Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison’s support for a plan to unlock the capital in the homes of older Australians. The Property Council of Australia said it was very encouraging that the treasurer had taken such a keen interest in this policy proposal, which would be a boost to seniors’ living standards and to the national economy. Executive director – retirement, Mary Wood said enabling seniors to unlock home capital to spend on the services they need is a smart move the industry has been advocating and one that could secure bipartisan support. “Not only would this plan improve the quality of life for many older Australians, it would also take pressure off government spending,” Ms Wood said. “Under the Age Pension Means Test, as it’s currently structured, the proceeds from the sale of a pensioner’s family home causes their pension to be cut – in effect,

A new report highlights the importance of grandparents in our children's lives.
RECOGNISING THE VITAL ROLE OF GRANDPARENTS lder people, mostly women, are giving up paid work to care for grandchildren so that their daughters and daughtersin-law can return to the labour force.
This intergenerational trade-off is identified in a new report from consumer lobby group National Seniors, Grandparent childcare and labour market participation, by
Myra Hamilton and Bridget Jenkins from the UNSW Social Policy Research Centre. Complementing a survey of 209 grandparents with focus groups, the researchers found 70 per cent had altered the days or shifts they worked; 55 per cent had reduced their working hours; and 18 per cent had changed jobs. In a separate question one third (33%) had changed the timing of their retirement to care for grandkids. The disturbing finding, says National Seniors CEO Michael O’Neill, is that this role grandparents play in propping up the childcare system barely rates a mention in public policy discourse. “Just as broken work patterns impact the super balances of younger women, so too they will affect the retirement savings of women who are leaving the workforce early to care for grandkids,” he said. “The extent to which

grandparents are providing day care has significant policy implications beyond early childhood education to mature age participation and retirement incomes”. “Yet grandparents are barely mentioned in the Productivity Commission’s final report into childcare; are excluded from the Coalition’s in-home nanny-pilot; and currently receive no direct government support”. On a human level, Mr. O’Neill said the report confirmed the simple motivations behind caring for grandchildren. “Older Australians are stepping in to reduce cost of living pressures on their adult children, but, ultimately, they just love spending time with their grandkids”. “Financial, lifestyle and health costs such as exhaustion from taking on more than 13 hours of care a week are seen simply as par for the course”.

A LEGEND RETURNS
ith a career spanning more than forty years and responsible for such timeless Aussie classics as Girls on the Avenue, Capricorn Dancer, and Deep Water, there’s little denying that Richard Clapton is one of the best, albeit underrated, songwriters this country has produced. His adroit and never mawkish observations on love, life and everything in between are up there with anything that the Don Walkers and Paul Kellys of this country have produced. With thirteen albums under his belt, that tradition continues, in spades, with his latest effort Harlequin Nights - a release that many wags are calling a career-best. Clapton will be making a welcome return, in duo mode, to the region this weekend and he
told Newcastle Weekly that punters could expect a set littered with career highlights. “I‘ll be bringing my guitar player Danny Spencer who has been part of my musical DNA for the past 15 years.” It was when Clapton first heard Bob Dylan that he knew he wanted to have a crack at songwriting. “I remember the first time I heard It’s All Over Now over a couple of scotches – the way Dylan’s voice resonated with me, I was just hooked on the whole songwriting scene.” Clapton came of age musically in the mid1970s – the same time Australia was also finding its feet culturally and he said, after moving to England to escape the cultural cringe of Australia in the late ‘60s, seeing the radical changes Australia was undergoing under then

Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. “After I left England I moved to Berlin and every day I would go to the Australian consulate to read the papers and I was seeing this wave of positivity on the back of Gough Whitlam so I thought I’d head back over and have a crack. It really was a wonderful time and one, sadly, I don’t think will ever be repeated.” Richard Clapton – Lake Macquarie Yacht Club – Sunday, 4 October from 1.30pm - Stephen Bisset

The time is now for Grunwald With the ink barely dry on the cover of his eighth studio album Now, bluesman par excellence Ash Grunwald is hitting the road – with a ubiquitous stop-over in Newcastle - to give punters an up-close-andpersonal taste of this barnstorming new set. Led by the strong grooves and tighter-than-a-tourniquet rhythm section of lead single Second Guess the album, produced by Nick DiDia (Pearl Jam) represents a bit of a widening of Grunwald’s sonic scope incorporating spooky Moog lines, flashes of psych and swampy blues to make one heck of a morish gumbo. -Ash Grunwald – Wickham Park Hotel – Thursday 1 October

time out NICHOLSON BREAKS LOOSE fter spending the last few years in the producer’s chair working on albums for the likes of Suze De Marchi, Beccy Cole and Lyn Bowtell, as well as dealing with the dissolution of his marriage of Kasey Chambers, Shane Nicholson is back with Hell Breaks Loose - his first solo album proper since 2011’s Bad Machines. Speaking to Newcastle Weekly about his upcoming turn at the Dashville Skyline festival this weekend, there is a palpable sense that the ARIA awardwinning songwriter can’t wait to get the album into as many ears as possible. “It’s going to be awesome,” he said. “I’m only just starting to get back on the road – I’ve got a killer new band and some great new songs so this tour, especially Dashville, is going to be

pretty special.” After throwing himself into production work after the breakup of his marriage, Nicholson said he kind of lost his songwriting mojo, but a trip to the remote Northern Territory town of Hermannsburg rekindled the creative spark. “I was working, like 14-hour days in the studio and the last thing you want to do after that is sit down and write a song,” he said, “After a while I realised that I just had no songs – it wasn’t because of writer’s block, just that I was fulfilled creatively by production. “Anyway, my good friend [Indigenous songwriter] Warren H Williams took me to his hometown of Hermannsburg and
as soon as I got there I was just struck with the openness and vastness of it all – the floodgates just opened.” While many are hailing Hell Breaks Loose as Nicholson’s most personal work yet, he prefers to think of it as his most direct. ‘I’ve always been quite personal in my songwriting,” he said. “I’d say this one is a lot less guarded – less wrapped up in metaphor and more direct. I still love playing with metaphor, but these songs definitely required an openness.” Shane Nicholson – Dashville Skyline – Saturday 3 October, Sunday 4 October. CREAMY VANILLA CHIA PUDDING ewcastle exercise physiologist and nutritionist, Anna Campbell shares her recipe for a creamy pudding featuring the superfood seed, chia. “I’ll admit, I’m a chia enthusiast and that’s because chia is a complete protein, meaning it contains all the essential amino acids necessary for human health,” Anna says. “It’s also full of omega-3 fats so it’s a great alternative for those (particularly kids) who won't eat fish.” Anna and husband Todd are the owners of HealtheCo, a locally-based health and wellness consultancy. For more information, visit healtheco.com.au or call 0407 487 267.
INGREDIENTS ¾ cup chia seeds 4 cups of milk of your choice 2 vanilla beans, split down the middle and seeds removed or two teaspoons of vanilla extract
METHOD
Let rest covered in the fridge overnight or at least 3-5 hours (or until it's achieved a pudding-like consistency). Check on the chia 5 minutes after placing in the fridge and stir if the seeds are separating.
Add all ingredients except sweetener to a mixing bowl and whisk vigorously to combine. If you prefer a smooth consistency you can opt for blending.
If blending, add to a blender and blend until completely smooth and creamy, scraping down sides as needed. Sweeten to taste.
If not blending sweeten to taste with maple syrup at this time. If blending, you can sweeten later with maple syrup or dates.
Leftovers keep covered in the fridge for 2-3 days, though best when fresh.
2 tablespoons of maple syrup
Serve chilled with desired toppings.

ORIX No 1 FOR QUALITY ONE OWNER CARS “simply the best”
October 2 – 8
PICK OF THE WEEK Animal Kingdom Friday, SBS, 8.35pm, M (2010) Writer/director David Michod’s ferocious debut feature is a nearflawless tale of Josh (James Frecheville), a Melbourne teenager torn between loyalty to his criminal family and leading life on the straight and narrow. Under the influence of his dodgy uncles (Ben Mendelsohn, Sullivan Stapleton and Luke Ford) and manipulative grandmother (Jacki Weaver, above), Josh’s moral dilemma is compounded when he comes to the attention of a cop (Guy Pearce). An instant Aussie classic.
Friday
Flight
Ocean’s Eleven
Monday, ONE, 9.30pm, MA15+ (2012) As his plane starts to nosedive in torrential rain, veteran pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington, right) pulls a brave stunt by turning the plane upside down then safely landing it in a field. Of the avoided disaster, Whip is labelled a hero. But when blood tests reveal he was drunk and on drugs while flying – a vice he’d managed to hide until now – Whip’s career and world as he knows starts falling from the skies. Washington is at his best in this film; his steely gaze hides his emotional turmoil as his veneer begins to crack. Flight is a gripping tale of a tortured character.
Saturday, NBN, 7pm, PG (2001) George Clooney (left) is cast in the role of Danny Ocean, a suave thief who heads an 11-strong cadre of cons who conspire to swipe $160 million from three Las Vegas casinos during a boxing match. With Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and Julia Roberts in on the game, director Steven Soderbergh’s fail-safe remake of the sloppy 1960 heist flick should be enjoyed for what it is: a showcase of cool actors in sexy clothes in a vivid setting, mouthing tasty dialogue under the guidance of a highly flattering director.

STARS STARS WITH FRANCIS BEVAN
www.francisbevan.com
For personal readings, phone Francis on 9673 6321. Credit cards welcome. Francis Bevan direct 1902 264 063 or 24 hour line 1902 267 040 $5.50 per minute (higher pay-phone or mobile)..
Professional and intimate personal relationships are going to be Dakota’s main focus throughout the next 12 months. Just like a typical Libran, she has a lot of confusion between her desire to cooperate with others and the need for self-expression, especially at work. Her mental powers are going to be on top form as the favourable aspect between her Libran Sun sign and Saturn lets her intelligence shine.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
Mars in your house of work indicates that an opening at work is likely and this will widen your horizons and show what you can do in a new role. This will be your chance to make your mark on the world and climb the professional ladder.
Mercury is retrograde during the first 10 days of this month and social plans may be suddenly cancelled so be sure to have a plan B up your sleeve. One of your offspring may be going through a rough time and will need some extra guidance.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
Focus on your career and solving a tough work project and be ready to make a beeline to your boss with the solution. It’s important to look at your money situation carefully and make some sensible decisions. A new enterprise or interest will take you into uncharted territory.
Your status at work is about to reach new heights this month and anything you propose will be taken very seriously. You could receive praise and recognition for past efforts and see the results of a long-term project. People in positions of authority will be pleased with your work.
Communication is the name of the game and this is an excellent time to reconnect with old friends who make you laugh and plan a fun get-together. Also your siblings, neighbours or colleagues will have interesting news to share. Watch for a clash of interests between you and the family.
Happy Birthday Libra! Romance beckons, if you have recently entered a new partnership be ready for exclusivity talks by December. January and April 2016 will bring the career progress that you've worked hard for. If you've been contemplating a job change, now is the time to go for it.
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
Focus on adventure and philosophy, as everything from international affairs to spirituality will tax your mind. Your desire to travel and your need to expand your knowledge will be boosted so allow yourself encounters with new ideas. Mars squares Saturn so expect setbacks and problems at work .
Your love life looks up when a charming and flirtatious mood takes hold. You’ll be extremely seductive and win admiration with ease. Your silver tongue enables you to express suppressed feelings. However, being fond of someone is one thing, but letting your feelings become obsessive is quite another.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
Mars in your sign makes this a highly energetic month. It's fast and furious all the way, but you have the physical strength and tenacity to cope with the pressure at work and home. If you can keep your head while those around are losing theirs, you’ll be doing well.
Focus on important friendships and give praise where praise is due with your loved ones and close associates. With Mercury being retrograde you need to avoid pressuring companions to hang out as a group, instead revel in some one-on one time.

The focus needs to be on letting go of past hurts as you'll gain useful insights if you're willing to live in the present. Mars is in a negative aspect with Neptune so be very careful of what you say and write as you're likely to be misunderstood.
