Westpac Rescue Helicopter an iconic part of the Hunter community
Newcastle Weekly contents

This week...
From the editor Our cover story this week is one that is very close to my own heart. Early last month, my daughter, Emily, was diagnosed with a blocked valve in her heart within a matter of hours of being born at Newcastle Private Hospital. A plan was quickly put into place to transfer her to Westmead Children’s Hospital via the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Living in the Hunter, I was well aware of the helicopter service but never imagined someone in my family having to use it. I was also introduced to the Newborn and Paediatric Emergency Transport Service, which as the name suggests, stabilises and cares for children as they are transferred between hospitals. Some of you reading this may have had close-hand experience with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and/or the Westmead Children’s Hospital. I can’t emphasise enough just how important these services are and my hope is that they continue to receive the strong support of sponsors and members of the community who raise money for both organisations. I’m pleased to report that after some surgery and 11 days in hospital in Sydney, little Emily is now back at home with doctors expecting she will be able to lead a normal life. - Paul Monforte

cover story Preparations being made for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to head off on another job from its Broadmeadow base. Photo: Jamie Wicks.
Our guardian in the sky to turn 40 he Westpac Rescue Helicopter has been a familiar sight in the Hunter’s skies for many years and, with the service’s 40th anniversary fast approaching, past patients are being encouraged to make contact to tell their stories. Community liaison and media officer, Barry Walton, told Newcastle Weekly that, while the crew were always keen to hear from those they had helped over the years, privacy laws prevented
the chance for follow-up calls. “We aren’t given many details about the people we transport,” Mr Walton said. “We are just told the person’s age, gender, location and the nature of their injuries. “So, the only we can find out how they are going is for them to get back in touch with us, and we strongly encourage that.” The service was launched in 1975 as a voluntary patrol of Newcastle beaches in the summer months and has grown to a 24/7
aeromedical search and rescue operation with an additional base at Tamworth. Air crewman, Brian Foster, said the job presented a number of challenges with rescues often having to be performed in lessthan-ideal weather conditions and terrain. “My job involves assisting the pilot with navigation and ensuring we have a clear and safe space to land,” he said. “I’m also part of the rescue crew
who help secure the patient and get them on board and back to hospital.” Mr Walton said that, despite receiving limited government funding, the service’s continued operation depended heavily on sponsorships and donations. “We need to raise about $8 million a year,” he said. “That helps maintain our two helicopters, as well as allow for a pilot, doctor and paramedic to be on duty at all times.” Mr Walton said donations could be made online at rescuehelicopter. com.au or by calling 1800 155 155. “People can also choose to make regular donations which can be set up to be automatically deducted from their account,” he said. As the service is a registered charity, all donations over $2 are tax deductible. The service’s major fundraising event, the Rescue Ball, will be held at Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Friday 11 September with a community event celebrating the 40th anniversary to be held on Sunday 6 December at Merewether Beach. All current and former employees, directors, volunteers, flight paramedics, police and retrieval staff are invited to help celebrate the milestone. The service is also particularly keen to collect any hidden historic memorabilia or keepsakes for a special month-long exhibition at Newcastle Museum from June next year. - Paul Monforte
Fundraiser for burns victims at The Olive Tree Market The Olive Tree Market at Civic Park, Newcastle on Saturday 5 September will be holding a fundraising raffle for one of their stallholders, the Larauza family, following an accident last month which saw children Amalka, 9, and Oliver, 5, suffer serious burns. The children were doused in boiling oil when a gust of wind knocked over a gazebo at a
market, in Sydney’s northern suburbs. Prizes for the raffle, donated by Olive Tree Market makers, include art and design as well as gourmet artisan food products frommore than 40 stallholders including a coconut, raspberry, vanilla and almond bircher muesli by The Muesli Man, a hanging vase and triple vase from Assorted Affair, a framed limited edition print
from Beau Wylie Illustration, a palm tree cushion with a feather insert from Homeworks Design Store, a Kimono from Dressy Bessy and a $50 gift voucher by The Apothecary Artist. Tickets are $2 each, three for $5 or six for $10 and will be available from the organisers’ stall on the day. Winners drawn at the end of the market. 3

work or study. Charlestown Square shopping centre has been involved in the program for the past three years, providing students with information on how to prepare and dress for a job interview. Stylist Natalie Baker, who runs the Charlestown Square Style Centre, hosts the program which involves around 25–30 students, four times a year; in February, June, August and November. “Charlestown Square works with the program, to help the students prepare for and realise the difference between what’s casual, what’s professional and what’s formal, and teaches them about different body shapes and how to dress to suit them,” Ms Baker said. “So, we have a few retailers who join, such as a hairdresser and beauty department, to teach them what styles are professional

to wear to an interview and teach them what products to use. Cardiff High School careers advisor Meagan Soley assists in the program which incorporates visits from career professionals, such as police and ambulance services, who provide information and advice to students on furthering their education or entering the workforce. “We want to boost them up, rather than drag them down, and show them there are more options in life,” Ms Soley said. “It’s really great being able to see how involved the students get, rather than just having information thrust upon them in class. “It’s a much more relaxed atmosphere, where they can learn from their peers, and they are able to engage and learn in a less traditional setting. It’s inspiring.” - Kayla Stephenson

Newcastle Airport terminal’s multi-million dollar upgrade assengers travelling to and from Newcastle Airport are now enjoying upgraded facilities following the completion of a $14.5 million terminal expansion project. The work included the refurbishment of the terminal, which has been increased in size by
50%, along with a new departure and arrivals hall; dedicated facilities for customs, immigration and quarantine to facilitate international services and six new food and beverage outlets. Newcastle Airport CEO, Peter Cock, said the region now had an airport which complemented the
spirit of the Hunter. “It’s bright, modern and ready for the future,” Mr Cock said. “The completion of this project begins and exciting period for our business and for the region. “It’s very timely that recent announcements by local airlines showing they’re operating in the black, compared with the lowest oil price in five years means the airlines are currently operating in a sweet spot. “These lower overhead costs combined with increased capacity in airline fleets have coincided perfectly with the opening of our terminal, this gives us the ability to take on more services we couldn’t have previously. “We’ve created a welcoming terminal. Our departing passengers can now easily pass through security screening and enjoy lightfilled spaces with uninterrupted views of the tarmac.
“Our passengers are informing us they want increased services and new destinations. “We’re actively engaging with airlines and are confident that they will increase services in response to this demand.” Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald officially opened the new terminal and said the work had increased customer comfort and improved the capacity to service international flights. “The expansion opens the possibility for new domestic routes such as Adelaide, Perth and Cairns as well as international services to New Zealand as demand continues to grow,” Mr MacDonald said. Currently, five airlines (Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin, Pelican and Rex) provide domestic services to Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Canberra and Ballina.

Shine the spotlight on unsung heroes Students from class 6S at The Junction Public School sit the Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition.
Numbers add up for the Hunter lmost 7000 students from across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie got their thinking caps on for the Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition last week. Newcastle Permanent CEO, Terry Millett, said the competition, for year 5 and 6 students, aimed to make maths fun, while also teaching children fundamental life skills. The 35-question paper was completed without the use of calculators, rulers or other mathematical instruments. “It encourages students to
become enthusiastic about maths, and challenges them to rely on their problem-solving skills,” Mr Millett said. “Mathematics and problemsolving are valuable life skills and the exam helps students develop these, providing more opportunities to them later in life. In fact, many adults would find the exams challenge their own problem-solving skills. “Each year students produce some outstanding results and again this year we expect to find some exceptional young minds in our regional schools.”

Nominations for the awards are now open in the following categories: Citizen of the Year; Young Citizen of the Year (age 19-30); Junior Young Citizen of the Year (age 18 and younger); Volunteer of the Year; Community Group of the Year; and Community Event of the Year. sport Brightest young cricket talent headed for Maitland number of Hunter-based female cricketers will take centre stage in the 2015/16 Under 18 State Challenge in Maitland later this month. The State Challenge will see 48 of NSW’s brightest young prospects compete in both 50over and Twenty20 matches, with players being divided into four teams, two representing Metro NSW and two from Regional NSW. Newcastle’s Jordan Johnson, Trudi Peterson, Jemma Astley and Synetta Manns will be part of the action in a 50-over match on Saturday 19 September followed by two Twenty20 matches on Sunday 20 September. The matches will be played
at Robins Oval and Louth Park within the Maitland Park sporting area. NSW female pathway coach, Leah Polton, said the State Challenge presented a great opportunity for the girls to get out on some good wickets early in the cricket season. “The players will also have a chance to test themselves against some high-quality opposition,” she said. “These are the best players this age group has to offer. “It’s a really good opportunity for players to put their hand up for further representative honours and I expect there to be a few people keeping an eye on the performances in Maitland.”
Panthers clash a battle to avoid wooden spoon he Knights’ season comes to an end this weekend with their clash against the Penrith Panthers at Pepper Stadium on Saturday afternoon to decide the wooden spoon. Results from last weekend’s action left the Knights on the bottom of the ladder after a gallant 20-18 loss to the Bulldogs. As was the case against Melbourne a week earlier, the Knights performed strongly against a team destined to figure in the semi-finals and will fancy their chances of defeating an injury plagued Panthers. Departing Knights captain, Kurt Gidley, thanked fans for their show of support. “I got a bit emotional, and I always knew that would come after the game,” he said. “I was just so lucky and

Seniors can benefit from a new government website aimed at reducing their energy bills.
SENSIBLE ADVICE FOR SENIORS ON REDUCING ENERGY BILLS eniors are being urged to take advantage of a new website dedicated to helping Australians reduce their spending on energy as well as providing information on available
government assistance. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry and Science, Karen Andrews, recently launched the website (yourenergysavings. gov.au) which contains a wealth
of information on wide range of topics including advice on choosing energy-efficient appliances and tips on cooling and heating you home. “Lifestyles change as Australians age and begin to move from full-time paid employment into retirement," Mrs Andrews said. "More time spent at home can also mean higher energy use. For some seniors, particularly those on a fixed income, energy bills can become more difficult to manage. “The guide includes advice about changing how and when energy is used, as well as choosing the energy contract most suited to the circumstances of individual households. It also highlights ways to manage payments and what to do if you’re having difficulties or are threatened with disconnection.” Mrs Andrews added you don't have to be a home owner to change how you manage your energy bills and to make your household more
energy efficient. “Nearly a third of Australians live in rented accommodation and, while there are limitations on what you can change, there are ways to reduce your energy bills and improve efficiency. The options in this guide are applicable to all households, with a particular focus on senior Australians.” Savings of up to 25 per cent on heating and cooling bills can be made by inexpensive draughtproofing at home—not to mention improved comfort levels. Your Energy Savings has a wealth of online information and tips that can assist seniors and others in the community to take no and low cost actions. Two of its most popular guides have also been translated into 32 languages. “By trying some of the suggestions and ideas you could save money, energy and water as well as making your home more comfortable,” Mrs Andrews said.

A FAMILIAR FACE RETURNS he has been a frequent visitor to our shores, although, when Scottish folk/ country icon Isla Grant arrives in Australia as part of her farewell tour, it could very well be her last visit. However, such is her enduring longevity and passion for performance that it might just be a case of never say never. "It has been such a pleasure,” Grant said in her arrestingly charming Scottish brogue. “We have already done seven shows in New Zealand which were just fantastic and we’re also really looking forward to Australia – it’s funny because it is billed as a farewell 14
tour but promoters are already asking about the next visit so, we’ll just have to wait and see – never say never.” Grant is certainly no stranger to the stage. Cutting her teeth in the folk clubs of Scotland and the north of England from the tender age of 14, she has parlayed those early passions into a career that has seen her release eleven albums, some being awarded triple platinum status, as well as becoming a household name in the UK into the bargain. “I have definitely been very lucky,” she said.
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Catch Isla Grant at Wests, Lambton at the end of the month.
“I just kind of floated into it all starting in the folk and working men’s clubs when I was a teenager. I never really thought too much about it – it’s all just been about putting one foot in front of the other.” Having become enamoured with the lure of country music thanks to artists like Merle Haggard, Grant became a successful country performer on the UK scene along with her equally-talented husband Al (who will be joining her on this tour) until 1992 when her and Al were involved in a near fatal car crash that kept Grant off the road for five years. Using that time to hone her songwriting skills further, she said that when she did finally return to the stage – it was as though a huge weight was lifted off. “It was definitely a cathartic experience – a true sense of release,” she said. “I cried for most of that first show actually – not out of sadness but a sense of joy about being up onstage again.” So what is it about her songs that resonate so clearly with audiences across the globe? “I think it’s because I try to write songs that are true to life and tell stories that people can relate to. Merle Haggard was a big influence in that regard as he is able to get across the truth of a subject using so few words – he’s 79 now and the album he just released with Willie Nelson is just phenomenal.” Grant said that, for her, the joy of performing in front of a crowd was still pretty hard to beat all these years later. “It's definitely still a reall buzz for me getting a great reaction from a crowd. There’s an immediacy to it that is really hard to beat.” Isla Grant – Wests, Lambton – Wednesday 30 September. - Stephen Bisset

Sydney pop punkers Frenzal Rhomb
YOU’LL NEVER HAVE SO MUCH FUN t’s a case of ‘you just can’t keep a good thing down’. Fans of seminal Sydney pop punkers Frenzal Rhomb were left crestfallen when, earlier this year, the band were forced to cancel a national run when drummer Gordy Foreman broke his arm while stage diving. Thankfully, Frenzal won’t let such frivolity get in the way of a good show so, to that end,
they have recruited Novocastrian drummer Kye Smith from Local Resident Failure to step into Foreman’s shoes. “It really was a huge humiliation for Gordy and one that we plan never to let him forget,” frontman Jay Whalley told Newcastle Weekly. “But, it really was a no-brainer when it came to Kye – the guy is just so on the money behind
the kit. It’s as though he was originally a sex robot that has been repurposed to drum.” Having just come off their first UK tour in four years, the band was due to fly over to the US to record their ninth full-length with producer Bill Stevenson (who helmed their last effort Smoko at the Pet Food Factory) however, due to Foreman’s malady, that trip has had to be postponed. “Yeah, Gordy’s really proving to be quite a burden,” he laughed. “We were actually supposed to fly out on Friday but now we’re just hanging tough until he’s back on deck. We’re stoked to be working with Bill again – the guy is such a champ.” The band were also recently recognised by Fat Mike from NOFX and Fat Wreck Chords (Frenzal’s US label) who named their Sans Souci set as one of his favorite Fat Wreck releases saying that they were one of the most underrated bands in Australia. A wrap that Whalley took in his stride. “The guy is definitely on drugs,” he said. “I don’t know about underrated, though. We’re definitely rated in this country, it’s just that it’s probably not very high.” Frenzal Rhomb - Cambridge Hotel - Friday 18 September. - Stephen Bisset

time out - meet the artist LIBBY CUSICK When did you first know you wanted to be a professional artist? Coming from an artistic family I was surrounded by art and sculpture. I was attending openings at iconic galleries in Newcastle such as Von Bertough and Cooks Hill galleries from an early age, and had great teachers such as John Montifiore, William Delafield Cook, and Francis Celtan. Describe your work. Mostly landscapes at present, with a romantic element. It’s a combination of techniques: palette knife, brush, and layering. What inspires you? Nature and hidden away places. The last couple of years I have been fascinated with our connection with land and the water’s edge, and the completely

different view to be had from a boat, staring into the watery depths. What is your greatest achievement? Trying to juggle work, family and finding time to paint. Note that I didn’t mention housework, something’s gotta give. To quote Margaret Olley, “Just buy another bunch of flowers”. What would your advice be for budding artists?
See art and read as much about art as you can. And try to paint every day. They don’t call it an art practice for nothing! Libby Cusick is currently exhibiting new work until 12 September at Nanshe Studio Gallery, Beaumont St, Hamilton.

f all of the things sorely lacking in this undergraduate reboot of the classic National Lampoon franchise, the one that sticks out the most is the absence of the original’s director Harold Ramis (Stripes, Caddyshack et al) and writer John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink).
Where the original was full of belly laughs - thanks to a well-honed comedic relationship between Ramis and star Chevy Chase - and Hughes’ insightful writing, this version comes off as a pale imitation of a great comedy film. Ed Helmes stars as Rusty Griswold (the boy from the original) who, wanting to bring

FILM REVIEW: VACATION
his fracturing family closer together, decides to retrace his father Clark’s footsteps by taking his family on a cross-country road trip to the theme park Walley World. Needless to say, things don’t go according to plan. This is surprisingly lowestcommon dominator stuff. When one of your comedic high points is a family swimming in a river of excrement it’s pretty much a free kick that this bar has been set pretty low. It almost makes Porky’s look like a Woody Allen film. Original mother and father Chevy Chase and Beverly DeAngelo make a wearisome appearance in a vein attempt to save this flick from comedy hell. They failed. Verdict: If you were a fan of the original, avoid this like the plague. If you’re a newcomer to the franchise, skip this and head straight for the original. 1/5 - Stephen Bisset

GUILT-FREE TREATS This October, Carolyn Hartz of SweetLife – one of Australia’s leading eprovider of sugar-free products will launch her long-awaited baking book Sugar Free Baking - a collection of 60 healthy sugar-free and gluten-free recipes which prove that giving up sugar does not mean giving up the sweet treats in life. In anticipation of the release, Newcastle Weekly is pleased to present this delectable, guilt-free recipies from Sugar Free.
VANILLA LAYER CAKE Serves 16 - 20
Carolyn Hartz's cookbook Sugar Free Baking will hit bookstores in October
INGREDIENTS Cake – makes 1 layer 150g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra to grease 100g Perfect Sweet® xylitol 3 X-large eggs 200g almond meal 50g arrowroot 1 teaspoon gluten free baking powder Pinch of salt 180 ml milk, lukewarm 1 tsp pure vanilla extract To Assemble 500ml whipping cream 400g fresh berries of your choice
METHOD Preheat oven to 150˚C/130˚C fan-forced. Grease a 24cm round cake pan with butter and line with baking paper,
To Assemble:
Use an electric beater to beat the butter and xylitol in a medium bowl until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time and beat well.
Set aside 1 cup of the whipped cream and 150g of the fresh berries to decorate the top layer.
Mix the almond meal, arrowroot, gluten free baking powder and salt together in a separate bowl. Add to the egg mixture and combine on low speed. Add the lukewarm milk and vanilla and stir until combined.
200g Perfect Sweet® Berry Jam (Recipe on Website)
Pour mixture into prepared cake pan and bake for 25 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.
75g Dark Bitter Chocolate, melted (optional) (Recipe on website)
Cool in pan for 10-15 minutes then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Rose petals or edible flowers to decorate (optional)
Repeat this recipe twice for the remaining layers.
20
Whip the cream in a medium bowl until soft peaks form.
To assemble, place the first cake layer on a serving plate and spread over half the jam, then half the remaining cream and top with half the remaining berries. Gently place the second cake layer on top and repeat. Place the third cake layer on top and finish with the reserved whipped cream and berries. If using, drizzle with melted chocolate and serve. RECIPE TIP It is best to have the milk lukewarm as it gives the cake a better texture. I recommend using strawberries when making your jam for use in this recipe.

The event, which formed part of children’s charity Variety’s auspicious 40th anniversary celebrations, saw four chefs prepare one course each, with each course matched with its own premium wine as well as lashings of entertainment, culinary games and live music - raising a much-needed $90,000 for the worthwhile cause into the bargain Chefs Timothy Montgomery (Restaurant Mason), Lesley Taylor

Renee Scott, Bridey Smith, Alicia Macdougall from Bliss Beauty Spa.
Relax and reinvigorate at Bliss Beauty Spa liss Beauty Spa is the ultimate escape from the busy outside world - a place where you can re-energise both body and mind. Having relaunched at the start of August under their new name, and partnering with sister salon Bliss Beauty and Body in New Lambton, owner Alicia Macdougall along with her team are dedicated to creating a calming and welcoming experience to suit your individual needs. “I have a fantastic team of girls, and I suppose that’s where a lot of our success has come from, they love what they do, they love looking after clients, and they just really do go above and beyond," Ms Macdougal said. “Bliss beauty spa is where indulgence begins, it’s more of a nurturing spa feeling rather than a salon.” Bliss offers a wide range of specialised services in facials, body treatments, massage therapy, relaxation retreats, manicure and
pedicure, spray tanning and make up, as well as waxing and tinting. “We also have a Vichy shower, which is an LED wet bed for body treatments. It’s basically a luxurious shower you can have laying down, with its cascading warm water to soothe and massage away the body’s daily stress, its also something that not many salons here in Newcastle have,” Ms Macdougall said. Bliss Beauty Spa is proud to announce that they have been recently nominated for the 2015 Hunter Local Business Awards in the New Business category. With a team dedicated to bringing you the highest level of care in both service and the products used, you are guaranteed to leave feeling refreshed and relaxed. Sister salon Bliss Beauty and Body, located at Regent Street New Lambton, is a much larger and more well known destination for those needing a little pampering with its seven
treatment rooms, two spray tanning areas and two manicure areas, as well as being a multi award-winner in beauty and customer service in 2014. Bliss New Lambton awards and nominations: - 2015 Finalist- Australian Champions Small Business Awards- Beauty services - 2014 Winner- Hunter Local Business Awards- Beauty services - 2014 Winner- Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards- Outstanding customer service - 2014 Finalist- Australian Beauty Industry Awards- Customer service Bliss Beauty Spa is located above Kokum Hair Salon at Level 1, 145B Beaumont Street, Hamilton. Contouring, a technique that used to be reserved for runway models and red carpet events has taken over the beauty world and has become a part of many women’s daily routines. However, if you’ve seen all those YouTube videos and still can’t master it, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Join in with the rise of ‘strobing’ which is the simple sister of the contour. PICK OF THE WEEK Spy Kids Friday, GO!, 6pm, PG (2001) Writer/director Robert Rodriguez, better known for the high-calibre action blood-letting of Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn, makes an about-face and aims his latest effort squarely at the kids. Rodriguez’s imaginative visual flare helps tell the story of two children (Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, pictured) who must rescue their parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Cugino) after finding out that their mum and dad are less boring than they imagined. This is a brilliantly fast-paced, fun-filled extravaganza.

Monsters Vs Aliens
Thursday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2010) The story behind Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg is a modern iteration of a classic Shakespearean tale, in that it concerns an exceptionally intelligent and innovative individual who loses all that’s dear to him in the process of attaining groundbreaking success. Jesse Eisenberg (right) plays the man behind the website that changed the way the developed world interacts, in a film that charts his dizzying rise to financial and technological supremacy. Also stars Justin Timberlake.
Saturday, NBN, 7pm, PG (2009) Right before her wedding to weatherman Derek (Paul Rudd), a meteorite transforms young woman Susan (Reese Witherspoon, pictured) into the ultimate bridezilla. The gentle giant is quickly taken to a secret government compound where she’s enlisted, along with other monsters including a fish man (Will Arnett) and a moronic blob (Seth Rogen), to fight obnoxious alien Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson) and his enormous robot. Monsters vs Aliens is littered with sharp, smart laughs, making it a battle worthy of spectating.

Although an excellent communicator and witty conversationalist, Beyoncé prefers to express her deepest feelings through actions rather than words. She is highly passionate and uses this as a way of expressing love which is very typical of someone with a mutable Sun Sign. Whenever she is feeling stressed during the months ahead, music, cooking and sports will certainly help to overcome this.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
Your status at work is about to reach new heights and anything that you propose will be taken seriously. You may receive recognition for past efforts and you could see the results of a long-term project. People who are in a position of authority will be pleased with your work.
There’s no doubt that your mental powers are in top form this month. The conjunction between the Sun and Jupiter lets your intelligence shine. You are particularly persuasive so it shouldn't be difficult to win even the most stubborn and entrenched person over to your cause.
The Sun is in your house of secrets and psychology making you very aware of your insecurities, dreams and imagination. For the next month you will be very aware of the hurdles that face you, however, your imagination and psychic insight will provide the necessary clues to overcome these obstacles.
The Sun moves into your solar ninth house making this a favourable month to travel overseas or to explore new neighbourhoods. It is also a good time to take an interest in spiritual matters. A friend may come up with a solution to some of your problems.
This is a good time to start new projects and to launch creative ideas. The Sun is in the area of your chart concerned with creativity, so you can take advantage of this and get involved with some kind of creative process to enhance your work or home life.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
Good news connected with money is due this month, owing to the Sun’s favourable aspect with Jupiter. You could find that you will be very much better off no matter how unlikely that prospect seems. A relative or close friend may also have a windfall.
This month’s events should be very beneficial financially; some will receive a windfall, while others could benefit from an insurance or endowment policy maturing. You might well have an impromptu celebration to mark the occasion.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
You can be certain that friends and acquaintances are going to have a powerful influence on your future prospects. The Sun’s harmonious angle gives you optimism and vitality. Your social life will increase in importance this month and you will be a popular and highly sought-after person.
The home and the family become your main interest over the next four weeks as the Sun moves into the most domestic area of your chart. Family feuds will be resolved, people from the past will re-emerge and you’ll find an increasing contentment in your own surroundings.
Jupiter is in your sign and your confidence will be at an all-time high this coming year. Your popularity increases and many of your long awaited goals come to fruition. Cash luck is on its way as Venus and Mars are in a most generous mood and will bestow their financial blessings freely.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21 You will find a way to successfully transform some element of your job and you’ll also find a way of earning more money. You can make slow and subtle moves towards success in your career and business from now on. You will be lucky with money.
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 The Sun moves into the area of your chart devoted to relationships. If things have been difficult in a partnership, either personal or business, this is your chance to put everything back into its proper place. It’s obvious that the significant other in your life deserves some respect and affection.

MUSIC “Although I couldn’t play a tune if you payed me, I love music and especially going to live gigs. Watching the very talented Tim Freedman’s band The Idle at Lizotte’s is one of my favorite memories. He, like Paul Kelly, is a great story teller and that’s something I really appreciate in a musician. ”
My favourite things FAMILY “My wife Debbie and I have been married for 30 years, after first meeting at Bar Beach in 1980. We have two wonderful children together Averil and Ash, whom I love to spend time with at the end of a busy work day, but often proves difficult with the travel required, mostly on weekends for fundraising opportunities, but it is still the highlight of my week.”
HUNTER AND WIDER COMMUNITIES “This year marks 40 years of service for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. It is the skills and experience of our pilots, crew, engineers, paramedics and doctors that make our service exceptional. However, it is a diverse and generous community that has allowed us to keep meeting the needs of those who unfortunately require the services we provide.”
RUGBY LEAGUE
Richard Jones GENERAL MANAGER OF THE WESTPAC RESCUE HELICOPTER SERVICE
Richard Jones has been the General Manager of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) for 20 years. In this role, Richard has overseen many significant changes to the service including several major upgrades to helicopter technology and the establishment of a permanent base at Tamworth to compliment the Newcastle base. A long-time Newcastle boy, Richard completed his HSC at St Pius College, Adamstown and, post-school, he enjoyed a career in rugby league playing at a senior level for the St George Dragons before making his way home to play at, then coach, his junior club South Newcastle, and Singleton in the Group 21 competition.
“I grew up playing for South Newcastle as a 5-year-old, and was fortunate enough to turn my passion into a career. After playing and coaching professional football in Sydney and Newcastle in the 1980s, I ventured overseas to play in France in 1992. A knee injury finished my playing career, and subsequently ended my professional international football career after just three short months.”
GOLF “I am a member of Royal Merewether Golf Club, and thoroughly enjoy playing a round with my mates, but unfortunately that doesn’t happen as often as I would like in a competition sense. However, I do get to enjoy a fair bit of corporate golf, but that is dangerous and not good for your health!”
BAR BEACH “Living in Bar Beach for all of my life, I have grown up with the sand between my toes. It’s been a while since I got on a board (thanks to those footy injuries), but I still love nothing more than spending a little time in the water with the kids, but the recent shark sightings, and bitings, make my pool at home a very pleasant place to be! ”
