news World record attempt for cancer research

They will lay it all on the line in a Guinness World Record attempt to raise much-needed funds for childhood cancer research. Lions Australia, alongside Elermore Vale Lions Club, will place five-cent pieces inside Newcastle Entertainment Centre this Saturday 16 March. The world record in its sights – the Longest Coin Line – stands at 75.24 kilometres and was set, according to the Guinness World Records, in Austria in December 2011. Organisers estimate about $200,000 would be required to break the record. Elermore Vale Lions Club member, Garry Patten, says the attempt will be a “huge win” in the bid to increase survival rates and improve treatment options for children affected by cancer. “We’ve not got anywhere near the funds to break the record,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “However, this is our first attempt – we’ve been planning for three months and it has been a learning curve. “Although we won’t beat [it], whatever we
raise is going to childhood cancer research, so we consider it a huge win because it’s going to a great cause. “A lot of the money has come from schools running their own mini coin lines, and they then give the funds to their local Lions clubs, which pass it on to us. “We’ve also had donations and interest from all over the country.” Mr Patten adds Hunter Valley Grammar School, Merewether High School, Mount View High School and Newcastle High School will take part in the world record attempt. Each year, more than 900 kids are diagnosed with cancer in Australia, while almost three young lives are lost every week. The Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation has raised about $10 million over the past four decades and funded 10 major research projects in the last seven years alone. One of these is the $4 million Lions Kids Cancer Genome Project. Continued on page 14

ORICA’S KOORAGANG ISLAND SITE TURNS 50 Orica’s Kooragang Island site recently turned 50, celebrating the occasion with a family open day for past and present employees. General Manager, Paul Hastie, said more than 300 people attended the special event which included site tours, visual displays and kids’ activities. “Achieving 50 years of operation in manufacturing is not something that happens by chance. It requires the commitment, discipline and diligence of all involved, and is something of which all Orica employees can be proud.” “The open day was not only a great opportunity to celebrate the site’s achievements but also an occasion where we could acknowledge and thank the people who have been a part of our 50-year story.”
DID YOU KNOW? • There are approximately 8,000 pipes, more than 800 vessels and around 600 relief valves across the Orica Kooragang Island site. • The original feedstock used to make ammonia was naphtha, a type of oil, but in 1982 the site switched to natural gas. Story has it that the Sydney to Newcastle gas pipeline was built using the ammonia plant’s gas contract as guarantee for its viability. • Orica Kooragang Island provides ammonium nitrate to approximately 85 per cent of the Hunter region’s mines. • Since 2014 more than 1,000 high school students have visited the site to learn about ammonia manufacturing for the HSC Chemistry course.
OUR PRODUCTS Since 1969 the site has produced around: • 9.5 million tonnes of ammonia, with nearly 3 million tonnes being sold to the agricultural and other industries. That’s enough ammonia to fertilise more than 14.5 million hectares of crops. • 1.3 million tonnes of pure carbon dioxide for the food, beverage and medical industries. That’s enough CO2 to put the bubbles in around 6 billion cans of soft drink. • 11.5 million tonnes of ammonium nitrate (AN), or nearly 360,000 truckloads. That amount of AN could move more than 14 billion cubic metres of overburden in mining operations.

Traffic lights will be installed at a busy Maitland roundabout in a bid to ease congestion during peak-hour periods. Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said work would start on the Church Street and Cessnock Road roundabout in April. It will cost about $1.5 million. “The traffic lights are expected to better manage traffic in the afternoon peak by providing more frequent gaps between vehicles to allow westbound traffic to travel through the roundabout,” Mr MacDonald said. The lights will be installed on the eastbound approach, while traffic queue detectors are to be placed on the New England Highway, westbound entry, to act as triggers. The roundabout will operate as normal outside of peak periods. The project is also set to include an extention of the left lane on Cessnock Road by about 100 metres to near the U-turn bay. Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) states this will improve traffic flow and reduce the queue length in the morning by offering additional lane capacity for traffic travelling through to Church Street. Liberal candidate for Maitland, Sally Halliday, said she was thrilled to see some progress towards the congestion issues.
“While I have been out on the campaign trail speaking to Maitland residents, this has been one of the hot topic issues raised with me,” she said. However, Maitland MP and Labor representative, Jenny Aitchison, said she informed the RMS of congestion issues when the roundabout opened in 2016. She claimed the government told her there would be community consultation on the final solution. “Now, the Parliamentary Secretary, who is not recontesting this election, has stepped in with the local Liberal candidate to make an announcement of money that is apparently already in the Budget, so not an election commitment, with no community consultation,” she said. “It will be great if the traffic lights work, but my concern is that the Liberal and National government is doing its usual penny-pinching in our region. “The end result is a $51 white elephant that has done nothing to fix the problem it was put in to address and people are having to wait in dangerous and lengthy congestion.” The RMS states that the local community will be notified prior to work getting under way. The work is expected to be completed at night. - Ben Murphy

SLASH YOUR POWER COSTS
IN RETIREMENT
For many retirees soaring energy costs are a major concern but seniors looking to relocate to Oak Tree Retirement Villages are set to save as The Group commits to flick the switch on solar and allocate 100% of the benefits back to the residents. Leading provider of Retirement Villages, The Oak Tree Group, will provide on all new villa developments a 4KW solar panel system and battery storage unit which has the potential to deliver 6KW Hours of energy for residents’ individual use. The Group’s new initiative comes after the 12.4% surge in electricity costs* this year and the growing concern seniors have raised over energy costs – notably, its infrastructure, reliability and price, as posted in a recent survey by National Seniors Australia.* “The growing costs of living are a concern for the majority of Australians but possibly more so for seniors who
have the restricted ability to increase income to fund it,” says Managing Director of The Oak Tree Group, Mr Mark Bindon. “But energy costs no longer needs to be a major concern in Retirement. “Our new commitment to solar means you can now think of our villages as selfsufficient solar farms. “We are one of the only Retirement Village operators passing 100% of the benefits back to our residents; this means all energy produced is utilised within the village community. “Nothing returns to the grid, and we make no profits as the operator,” he said. Oak Tree Retirement Villages have been tailor designed to provide comfortable, affordable homes where seniors can downsize to a smaller villa and enjoy a maintenance free lifestyle. “One of the major benefits of downsizing is it reduces your costs of living – smaller homes require less up keep and less energy to heat and cool in particular.” said Mr Bindon. The Group is hoping the new solar
program greatly reduces, if not eliminates, electricity bills putting more money back in residents’ hip pockets. Early data and modelling projects as much as a 90% reduction in energy costs under the Oak Tree system. The Group sees this as one of its most exciting endeavours over the last 15 years in the industry. “We also see that renewable energy has many other benefits – it reduces our carbon footprint, provides security against future price increases and adds market value to the villa and Village at large,” said Mr Bindon. “Solar will offer a significant cost saving and a more stable financial platform for our residents to depend upon and plan for their futures.” he said. “With seniors now more focused on their income in retirement than ever, we’re certain this is a step in the right direction.”

news Workshop offers vital resources to support grief-sticken students School counsellors across the Hunter have been equipped with greater skills and knowledge to support students going through a tough time. The National Centre for Childhood Grief (NCCG) delivered a free workshop at the University of Newcastle’s NeW Space campus last week to increase awareness around the needs of bereaved children. The Greater Charitable Foundation has partnered with the NCCG, committing $40,000 to help distribute Grief Resource Packs to 200 rural and regional schools throughout the state over the next 12 months. St Philip’s Christian College Cessnock’s wellbeing coordinator, Aaron Hodges, who attended the session, said the NCCG’s resource packs would be invaluable in the bid to educate staff on how to manage, and support, children and young people. “We have more than 1,000 students across years K-12 that all respond differently when faced with situations involving loss or grief,” he said.
“It is our role as caregivers to recognise when these children are suffering and be armed with the skills and knowledge to help them work through their bereaved state and manage their emotions. “This is the first time, as a wellbeing coordinator, I have had access to a tailored set of resources and a training program specifically focused on grief and loss to help navigate age appropriate methods of assisting children facing devastating life circumstances, such as separation of parents, which is probably the most common issue we see arise.” The NCCG is Australia’s only provider of free and unlimited specialist bereavement counselling to children and teenagers. Clinical director, Dr Elizabeth Mann, said its programs and resources were internationally recognised and had assisted teachers, parents and carers for more than two decades. “This year, NCCG celebrates its 25th anniversary and, in this time, has established

From page 4 The study involves whole genome sequencing and analysis for 400 children with high-risk cancer in Australia over three years. It will potentially develop personalised cancer treatment through integrating genetic information with other biological and clinical data. The study also aims to identify changes to each child’s DNA that might predispose them to cancer, helping to build a database of genetic risk factors. Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation District Chair, Kate Moore, says every child deserves a chance at a healthy life. “We’re about $300,000 short of what we need to complete the project,” she says. “I’ve always wanted to do
a Guinness World Record attempt, and I thought this was a really good way to raise more funds. “I went to Elermore Vale Lions Club as they are the coin line specialists. “They’ve been doing it for about 15 years and donated around $60,000 during that time. “So, they have a record of doing these sorts of things.” The Longest Coin Line attempt will be open to the public from 9am until 5pm. Extra volunteers and donations on the day are most welcome. Email pattengaz@gmail.com if you’d like to get involved in the event. Sparkling White Smile advertising moment
Sparkling empire expands
A
s a young woman in her early twenties, Alison Egan dreamt of getting her teeth whitened. However, most existing services (which involved visiting a dentist’s office or clinic) were out of her price range. So, she started her own teeth whitening company – the first mobile service in Australia – and Sparkling White Smile was born. It was that simple. Well, not quite. Alison hustled for 18 hours a day, working a full-time job in the mental health sector and building her empire on the side, until, one day, she was able to quit her day job and turn her business into a
full-time passion. “I haven’t had a day off in five years, but when you love what you do, it doesn’t matter,” she said. “I never expected it would take off like it has, but as a [then] 21-year-old, I had no house, no commitments, and I was able to invest all my money in my business. I lived off $80 a week.” Sparkling White Smile now services 2,500 clients a week through 13 franchises across Australia, the newest being right here in Newcastle. Franchisees Taleisha Mackman and Sarah Bezzina moved to Newcastle specifically to expand Sparkling White Smile, and,
Sparkling White Smile Director, Alison Egan.
according to Alison, they’re two of her most loyal, highly regarded technicians. “They are doing really well,” Alison said. “In just two months, the Newcastle franchise has become one of the most successful. “There was definitely a gap in the market.” Sparkling White Smile clients can have their teeth whitened on the go for a fraction of the cost. When asked how she could
keep her prices so affordable, Alison said: “The secret is that you don’t have to [overcharge]”. That, and low overhead costs from being a completely mobile service, enabling technicians to treat clients in their own homes. Sparkling White Smile uses a low-percentage (6%) hydrogen peroxide treatment to whiten teeth without damaging them. Visit the website, sparklingwhitesmile.com.au, to browse and book your treatment.

A shared pathway that will create a continuous link from Speers Point to Glendale is in its final stages. The current works involve the construction of 2.5 kilometres of shared pathway and pedestrian facilities, as well as associated infrastructure. The path will run from Lake Road, Argenton, along the former tram corridor to Frederick Street, Glendale, joining up with existing pathways to provide a safer offroad option for pedestrians and cyclists. It will be completed in stages over the next two years. “In Lake Macquarie, we have an abundance of unique, natural assets and we want our residents and visitors to be able to access them through active forms of transport,” Lake Macquarie
BEFORE
council’s manager of asset management, Helen Plummer, said. “Better connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians aligns with our Community Strategic Plan’s vision to provide safe and connected options for people to get around our city.” When complete, the shared pathway will link to the Glendale to Wallsend rail trail, which in turn, connects to a network of bike routes in Newcastle, as well as community facilities such as the University of Newcastle. The Speers Point to Glendale project is part of the council’s Cycling Strategy 2021. It also falls under the $100 million capital works program for 2018/19. Companionship for veterans Australian Defence Force veterans and emergency service personnel dedicate their lives to protecting the community. But, once they leave the line of duty, many often feel lost.
20
In 2015, a Defence Shed pilot program was established in Port Adelaide to offer support and provide a platform for both males and females to discuss concerns such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Based on the popular concept of men’s sheds, it also allows members to work on meaningful projects that give purpose and make a positive impact on the community. Due to its success, negotiations are now under way for sheds to be established in the Lower Hunter, Wagga Wagga, Melbourne, and Ipswich. Hunter Defence Shed secretary Rod Wicks said the self-help group, set-up in late 2018, would operate as a coffee club in the interim. “We’re assisting veterans, current serving members, first responders – so police, paramedics and firefighters – and all of their families,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s along the lines of PTSD; they can come and talk to us, often much more easily than psychologists. “Not taking anything away from psychologists, but we walk the walk and talk the talk. “We’re not trained counsellors and don’t pretend to be, but we’re
there to help in any way we can.” Mr Wicks said the group also aimed to find emergency accommodation for those who felt threatened or depressed. “We want to get them off the street,” he said. Defence Shed chairperson, Ben Parkinson, served six tours of duty, including stints in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. The new research could transform targeted prevention measures to improve mental wellbeing and ease pressure on the nation’s health system in the future. Led by the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute, the findings honed the use of ‘acoustic startle’ as a marker of resilience. “When we hear a sudden, loud sound – for example, a gunshot – we naturally respond with instant sweat, a spike in heart rate and disrupted breathing, known as acoustic startle,” lead author, associate professor Eugene Nalivaiko, said.
“We can measure stress response with body sensors, the simplest being a skin conductance sensor attached to your fingertip, which picks up the activity of sweat glands – one of the fastest stress response systems in [the] human body. “If the same noxious sound is presented repeatedly, our stress response declines. We get used to the same stressor and essentially ‘habituate’ or get used to a sound.” Mr Nalivaiko added how fast people become accustomed to the same stressor had a direct link to resilience – those with high levels habituate quickly, while low were slower or not at all. Previous studies have found this habituation rate can indicate whether a person has PTSD or not and can also identify if an individual has anxiety and depression.

A newly-constructed skate park in East Maitland will provide local skateboarders with a top-quality facility ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The skate park, in Lawes Street, officially launches next Saturday 23 March between 10am and 4pm. Maitland council’s manager of community and recreation, Laurie D’Angelo, says the Lawes Street Shred will showcase the site, which features various elements for all skill levels and disciplines, including a 1.5 metre to 2.1-metre deep hipped skate bowl. “This is the second event of its kind after Rutherford Shred attracted good numbers last year,” she says. “The event will provide a platform for celebrating and showcasing the talents of riders, particularly our young people,

news Boat ramp relaunch
Quality organisation takes top gong
Pelican Boat Ramp will reopen to the public this weekend after a million-dollar makeover. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said the $1.2 million upgrade would allow the community to use the popular facility while the council investigated options to address ongoing erosion in the area. “Erosion in this part of the lake is a long-term problem and council has work under way to look at how we can manage the issues associated with channel evolution,” she said. The council will install a smart LED sign in the coming weeks to provide real-time data on temperature, current velocity, tide and number of boats launched, as well as safety messages. The boat ramp was closed in October 2015 due to the effects of tidal erosion and damage incurred from the April super storm. The council stated a number of factors, including a revised design and gaining relevant approvals, initially affected the project’s delivery. It was funded through the state government’s Boating Now program. The official opening takes place on Saturday 16 March from 9am to 11am at Pelican Foreshore.

Plan for park overhaul A master plan aims to transform Stevenson Park into one of Newcastle’s premier sporting and recreational facilities. Key priorities for the site in Mayfield West will include more car parking; a larger, better playground for children; a fenced off-leash area for dogs; new footpath connections; and upgrades to existing sporting infrastructure. Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said Newcastle council’s master plan would deliver on a shared vision of Stevenson Park. She added the park would be home to multifunctional spaces that promoted social interaction and active lifestyles. “[This is] in line with the city’s strategic direction to create a city of great public places and neighbourhoods promoting people’s health, happiness and wellbeing,” Cr Nelmes said. The project follows strong advocacy from the local community, particularly through the Friends of Stevenson Park, and follows representations by Cr Nelmes and Ward 1 councillor Emma White. The council has allocated $150,000 in the 201819 Budget to begin construction of the park’s new playground. Stage one will be implemented this year.

Camp Quality is the second recipient of the Business of the Month award, established this year by Lake Macquarie Business to recognise exceptional local businesses that strive for growth, innovation and all-round excellence. Nominations are submitted via the LMB Instagram page and determined by a board of directors.

news CBD’s revamp
Footpath goes green Oval lights up
Cycling and pedestrian-friendly access and interpretive signage are among the features of a new and improved Cessnock CBD. The Cessnock Civic Precinct Revitalisation Program aims to provide thriving retail opportunities, easy access to car parking, and well connected, visually appealing public spaces. Planned work to the CBD is expected to start this month, with the installation of the Cumberland Street pedestrian refuge to take about two weeks. Works will then start on North Avenue and Keene Street to improve pedestrian access. “This project not only enhances economic viability and sustainability post-mining, it supports attraction of new investment, enhances population growth and capacity, and supports economic resilience through enabling diversification into new sectors,” Cessnock council’s acting economic development manager, Rhiannon Stevens, said. The program is funded through state and federal government initiatives. Visit cessnock.nsw. gov.au/community/roads to stay up to date.
The Hunter Region’s first footpath made with environmentally sustainable materials has been poured in Redhead. Lake Macquarie council crews emptied the ‘greencrete’ along a 30-metre stretch on Steel Street last week. The council plans to monitor the footpath’s performance and condition in the months to come. Manager of asset management, Helen Plummer, said half of the fine aggregate used in greencrete was crushed glass sand, rather than natural sand. The mix also contained thin polypropylene strips made from 100% recycled plastic. “These Australian-made materials close the loop on recycling, providing a practical end use for glass and plastic collected from kerbside recycling bins,” Ms Plummer said. The council’s trial of crushed glass sand in civil works projects kicked off last June, with tonnes of the material used in underground drainage pits. Ms Plummer said the Redhead works were the first time it had been used in the region to replace sand for a concrete footpath.
High-quality floodlights equipped with a powerful, energy-efficient beam will brighten up night-time sporting fixtures for players and spectators at Darling Street Oval. Newcastle council invested $295,000 into the $400,000 project in Hamilton South, while it also worked with the community to develop a masterplan and complete significant upgrades to the existing infrastructure. Hamilton Olympic FC chairman, Christo Patsan, said the lights were an important milestone in the oval’s upgrade. He added it would help attract international sporting events, coaching clinics and tournaments, as well as allow his club to host events for the underprivileged. “The new lights give us the ability to activate the oval for longer periods of time, and also to give back to our community through sporting clinics, including events and football clinics for refugee children,” he said. Other works at Darling Street Oval include the expansion of the playing field to meet modern standards and construction of a new grandstand.

sport Northstars appoint new coach as season nears John Kennedy Jr will make the transition from the ice to the bench this Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) season as head coach of the Newcastle Rescue Northstars. Kennedy, a defenceman who wore #5 for the Northstars for six years, will take the helm of Newcastle’s team in 2019. He will be assisted by associate coaches Joe Theriault and Ray Sheffield. “It’s an amazing honour to have been considered for the role and, to actually get it, it’s incredible,” Kennedy said. “With an organisation like the Northstars, we’re expected to win. “We’re expected to be one of the top four teams going into the finals each year. “Our aim this year is getting
back to that level of play that we know we’re capable of, which we’ve already started working on. “Not only am I here to coach, but I'm here to grow and develop players and grow and develop talent – I think that’s my strength as a coach.” Kennedy, who was born in the United States, first joined the Northstars as an import in 2013. He is now an Australian citizen. Northstars general manager, Garry Doré, said Kennedy’s expertise in both training and development made him a top choice when it came to the selection of a new coach in the off season. “Through the National Sports Academy, John has been developing ice hockey across Australia through camps focusing on high

most successful organisation in Australian ice hockey.” The Northstars will open the 2019 AIHL season with a double header against Sydney Bears and Melbourne Ice at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 April.

Huge field of internationals More than 20 countries have been represented at the two drawcard events on Surfest’s 2019 schedule this week. Some of the best international surfers from the World Surf League (WSL)’s elite championship tour hit Merewether on Monday for the start of the men’s Burton Automotive Pro. Top seed is world number two
Julian Wilson. Women’s world number four Tatiana Weston-Webb carried the honour into the Holmes Civil Developments Pro competition. Surfest coordinator Warren Smith said he could not recall so many countries taking part before, while this year’s edition also attracted more than 300 entries. Smith believed a sense of history
around the biggest surfing festival in the southern hemisphere had helped draw both successful and emerging athletes to Newcastle. He reserved special praise for the Surfest sponsorship and marketing team for its hard work. “We’ve got a plan and we’re working towards it – I’m so pleased with [this year] so far,” Smith said. “The growth of the sport, internationally and nationally, is really helping us – we believe we have got a great product to promote Newcastle and the Hunter Region.” Male competitors from the WSL Championship Tour includes the likes of Wilson and fellow Australians Owen Wright (ranked sixth) and Wade Carmichael (ninth), Newcastle’s own Ryan Callinan, Italian Leonardo Fioravanti, Brazilians Jadson Andre and Jesse Mendes, and the USA’s Griffin Colapinto.
Hawaiian Coco Ho, the women’s 2018 champion, returned to defend her title, alongside stars such as Sally Fitzgibbons (ranked sixth), France’s Johanne Defay (fifth), the USA’s Caroline Marks (seventh), and New Zealand’s Paige Hareb. The two WSL QS 6000 events wrap up this Sunday 17 March as part of an action-packed finale to Surfest. The Evolution Corporate Charity Teams Cup also takes place at Dixon Park tomorrow (Friday 15 March), followed by The Drop Festival and Barrelled Food, Wine and Beer Festival. The Drop Festival, a music concert that features the likes of Angus and Julia Stone, The Jungle Giants, Ball Park Music and Alex the Astronaut, will start at King Edward Park at 4pm on Saturday 16 March. Barrelled goes from 11am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday at Jefferson Park. - Ben Murphy

Grape escape Think the humble dried grape can’t be the star of the show? Think again! These two desserts just wouldn’t be the same without raisins and sultanas (and there are subtle differences between the two).
Mini ricotta cheesecakes with raisin compote Recipe courtesy Rachel Scoular of @healthyhappyhabits & Australian Dried Grapes Serves: 12 Prep: 15 min Cook: 30 min 170g (1 cup) Australian raisins 12 x plain circular biscuits (e.g. Butternut Snap Cookie, Granita etc) 300g fresh ricotta 250g cream cheese, at room temperature 3 Tbsp honey 3 eggs 2 tsp vanilla bean paste 300g sour cream 1 orange, juiced and 2 tsp rind kept
Using a sharp knife, chop the nuts into small bite sized pieces and place into a bowl along with the sultanas, breadcrumbs and cinnamon. Add the maple and agave syrup and give it a good mix until well incorporated. Core your pears and apples, half, and cut into thin slices. Grab your first filo sheet and lay down on the baking paper. Brush melted vegan butter and sprinkle ¼ of the nut mixture. Then place second filo sheet carefully over, brush with vegan butter and add another ¼ of the nut mixture. Repeat twice more leaving a little nut mixture for the top. On the fifth filo sheet, brush butter and arrange your apple and pear slices. Add the remaining nut mixture, brush the remaining butter and sprinkle with coconut sugar. Place in oven to bake 20 minutes or until edges are crispy and golden. Cut into rectangles and serve warm with ice cream or whatever you desire. Enjoy! Note: This tart can be stored in an airtight container and enjoyed the next day; just warm it up a little before eating.
Preheat oven to 160C. Line 12 non-stick muffin pans with biscuit at bottom. Use an electric beater on low to beat the ricotta, cream cheese, sugar, eggs and 1 tsp vanilla in a bowl until just combined. Beat in sour cream and orange rind. Spoon among the lined pans. Bake for 30 minutes or until firm. Place in fridge for 2-3 hours to cool completely. Once cold, remove cheesecakes from pan gently. Meanwhile, simmer raisins and orange juice in a small saucepan over low heat for 3-4 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and cool for 20 minutes. Stir in remaining vanilla. Cover and chill for 2-3 hours. Serve the cheesecakes topped with the raisin compote. 31

Over the Black Dot presenters Jodan Perry, Timana Tahu, Bo de la Cruz and George Rose.
Tahu’s hot tips as panellists prepare for new NRL season Former dual international Timana Tahu has backed the Sydney Roosters to win back-to-back NRL crowns. Tahu, who enjoyed two stints with Newcastle from 1999-04 and 2012-14, is a panellist on National Indigenous Television (NITV)’s flagship show Over the Black Dot. He will be joined by two other presenters with links to Newcastle – senior journalist Jodan Perry
and former Knights back Owen Craigie – as well as ex-Manly forward George Rose and respected female athlete Bo de la Cruz. Over the Black Dot, which returns to air on Tuesday 19 March, aims to provide more analysis and interviews with some of the best Aboriginal stars in rugby league. Each week, the panel will welcome special guest analysts and players to review and preview every
round, while de la Cruz will produce a weekly recap on the women’s games. Last season’s high-profile guests included Andrew Fifita and Latrell Mitchell, while the likes of Matt Bowen, Bevan French and Caitlin Moran have already been locked in for 2019. Tahu says he can’t wait for a new NRL season to begin. He believes the Roosters will remain the team to beat. “The Roosters are looking good still – they haven’t made too many changes,” Tahu says. “I think they will almost definitely be up there again.” Tahu also singled out the 2018 wooden spooners, Parramatta, as a dark horse, with the Eels recruiting one of the NRL’s best wingers, Blake Ferguson, over the offseason. “The Eels struggled last year – I thought their backs were a bit small, especially when they lost Semi Radradra. “It’s always a rollercoaster with Parramatta – I don’t think they’ll make the grand final, but I expect them to at least get to the semis.” Over the Black Dot will air at 8.30pm on NITV (Channel 34 and Foxtel 144), with a repeat on SBS on Thursdays at 2pm. - Ben Murphy

All the greatest hits from 1603 Echoes of his melancholy mastery reverberate throughout today’s music as the likes of Ed Sheeran, Lorde and Pink channel aspects of his work. But how would Renaissance composer, lutenist and singer John Dowland’s greatest hits sound if he composed them today? New Zealand actor-countertenor, Glenn McKenzie, explores this challenge in an electric and evocative romp through English music and theatre’s most boisterous and creative days in his solo chamber work, Evensong, for the 2019 Newcastle Fringe Festival this month. The festival, which takes place from Wednesday 20 to Sunday 24 March, is a smorgasbord of performing art,

such as comedy, theatre, music, dance, cabaret, and circus. In Evensong, McKenzie paints a playful portrait of William Shakespeare’s mysterious muse, Mr W.H. – the outrageous actorsinger who was described in one of Shakespeare’s sonnets as the “mastermistress of my passion”. McKenzie takes his cue from famed Irish playwright and poet, Oscar Wilde, who wrote of a theory that Shakespeare’s sonnets were addressed to one Willie Hughes, portrayed in The Portrait of Mr W.H. as a boy actor who specialised in playing women in Shakespeare’s company. Evensong offers a fresh and contemporary interpretation of

Dowland’s finest songs and English composer Henry Purcell’s celebrated arias, framed by a selection of Shakespeare’s most revealing scenes and sonnets. Lamenting the tyranny of time and celebrating the persistence of love, Mr W.H. flamboyantly recalls the roles he played as a boy and man; the songs that he sang on stage and at court; and the sonnets that Will wrote for him in celebration of their relationship. McKenzie says Evensong imagines the colourful life of Shakespeare’s forgotten pop star boyfriend through a kaleidoscope of brilliant fragments from 17th Century portraits of love, laughter, lunacy, and loss. “I’m taking a very controversial

Some might call him the Marie Kondo of Newcastle. Belmont North’s Cale Gron is on a mission to change people’s attitudes towards “stuff” – you know, the piles of goods we accumulate until we can no longer bear to look at them and have to shut the door, drawer or cupboard so they’re out of sight, out of mind? Yeah, that stuff. Cale took a shining to home organisation after watching The Minimalists documentary and reading Marie Kondo’s book, The LifeChanging Magic of Tidying Up, before the binge-worthy Netflix series was released. A professional cleaner by trade, Cale felt compelled to take his skills to the next level and invoke this clutter-free wisdom in his own life and, soon enough, others were coming to him for help. “Usually it’s a room or a cupboard or a kids’ bedroom,” Cale tells Newcastle Weekly. “People feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.” In October, Cale started an Instagram page imbued with the peace and serenity of tidy surroundings; the kind of bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living set-ups that make you think, ‘I want that lifestyle’. Well, you can have it. Cale regularly shares organisation hacks and cleaning tips, from 38
folding clothes, sheets and towels to storing pantry items and tackling the linen cupboard. Some things he taught himself; others he picked up along the way. Clearing clutter is proven to reduce stress and anxiety. While seemingly innocuous, stacks of knickknacks and overflowing drawers serve as visual reminders of disorder – something our brains don’t like. “We all have at least one space in the house that’s clean and organised and it just brings you peace,” Cale says. “Houses are for living [in], that’s a fact; but there’s no reason why every other room can’t feel that way.” However, the true key to a minimalistic lifestyle, according to Cale, starts at the top of the consumerism life cycle. “I’m all about encouraging people to have the right attitude towards their stuff,” he says. “Some say we’re too materialistic, but really, we’re not materialistic enough. “For example, instead of investing in one, good-quality white T-shirt, most people will buy 10 crappy ones. “Buy once and buy well, and you’ll have less stuff to organise in the first place.” Follow Cale on Instagram: @quiet_clean_organised

Linen cupboard If it doesn’t belong in a set, or some of the set is missing, reuse, repurpose or recycle. See my Instagram page for a step-by-step video of how to fold sheets, including the dreaded fitted sheet.
Whole house Less is more. The less “stuff” on surfaces, the less surface area there is to clean and the easier and quicker it will be to tidy and get on with your day.

tips for a happier home
Our homes can have a dramatic effect on the way we feel – from colour psychology through to the feelings that different lighting can evoke. Lysn psychologist Noosha Anzab says it’s important to take some time to look at your home and consider what aspects will have a positive effect on your physical and mental wellbeing. She offers seven mindfulness tips for a happier home:
CLEAN A messy house can make for a chaotic mind! The same goes for your workspace or desk, or those ‘everything’ drawers. If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, overwhelmed, forgetful or a little strung out, do some cleaning! The act of tidying up your space

physically, allows the mind to clear simply because your mind doesn’t have to compete on processing lots of stimuli (or clutter) at once.
DECLUTTER Closely linked to cleaning, decluttering can allow you to focus more on tasks. If areas of your
Studies have shown that people are happier and less stressed when they are around plants, gardening or simply outdoors. This is because plants increase oxygen levels, which in turn decreases a person’s anxiety levels.
SCENTS Fragrance has been known to have a huge influence on our behaviour, affecting our moods, stress levels, self-confidence and even our cognitive performance.
USE YOUR COLOURS WISELY Certain colours evoke different emotions so try to be mindful of the stronger hues. For example, red is the colour of energy so it can raise anxiety levels, making

CHECK YOUR LIGHTING Lighting can have a dramatic effect on a person’s mood, health and overall wellbeing. When it isn’t right, our whole bodies can be thrown off. During daytime, we require high levels of light to stay alert and at night, we need dimmed lights or none at all for sleeping. The ideal home should have a good mix of both natural and artificial light.
UPDATE YOUR BEDROOM Take a look at how your bedroom might be affecting your sleep. Sleep is incredibly important for a wellbalanced emotional state, so ensure you set the foundations right. Avoid electronics in here and go the extra mile to turn it into your retreat; after all, you spend more than six hours a night in there so you need to be comfortable and undisturbed.

The brassica bunch
I believe, because of the flooding in Queensland, that market gardeners will have very little winter crops available. It is probably wise to prepare vegetable beds to plant out vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Dig in poultry manure and an all-purpose plant food ready for planting when seedlings become available. Broccoli can be planted up
until the end of April and, to produce tender heads, apply a side dressing of fertiliser every five or six weeks. Cauliflower is related to broccoli, but takes longer to grow (14 to 24 weeks). Cabbage is easier to grow than broccoli and cauliflower but it also likes fast growth – nitrogen being the activator. During growth, either apply mulchings of poultry manure or side dressings of sulphate of ammonia. If planting cabbage on the coastline, occasionally add sulphate of potash while cabbages are maturing. The aforementioned are in the brassica family, which white butterfl ies love. Of course, the eggs they lay produce leaf-eating grubs. This can be controlled

by applying a vegetable dust and, if necessary, spray with Carbaryl, taking time to read the instructions on the spray carefully. There are many other
vegetables that can be grown now for winter soups and stews, including English spinach, silverbeet, carrots, broad beans, peas, leeks and parsnips.
THIS WEEK • Mangoes are ripening on trees, providing a great meal for bats – they can be picked while green and will ripen on a sunny windowsill. • This Sunday 17 March is St Patrick’s Day; traditionally when sweet peas are planted. • During summer, not only did the army grub do untold damage to lawns, but now black beetles are invading. The same products can be used for both pests. Fertilise as soon as possible to encourage new growth before winter and continue watering Seasol down to the damaged root system to encourage recovery.

Front door Gather your painting supplies: Dulux Aquanamel in your chosen colour(s), Dulux 1Step Prep, drop sheet, high-quality synthetic brush for cutting in, short nap (5-10mm) roller, roller tray, 400 grit sandpaper, painter’s tape and old cloths. After sanding down the surface, apply one coat of Dulux 1Step Prep. Start painting by cutting in around the edges of the door using Dulux Aquanamel. Apply Dulux Aquanamel to the surface using short, horizontal brush strokes. Once you’ve completed an area, while the paint is still wet, lightly smooth over the painted section with long brush strokes – but don’t overdo or reload the brush; a few strokes will smooth the surface. Use a paint roller for the broad section of the door. Allow 2 hours Photos: Dulux Australia to dry, then give the surface a light Stylist: Bree Leech sand with 400 grit sandpaper. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the second coat.

In the know: interiors Back to black Matte black seems to be moving from fashion to interiors. Expect to see bold, high-contrast furniture designs like luxurious marble paired with black steel, or black leather with deep brown timbers. As for colours; move over rose gold, traditional metallic gold is going to make a major comeback this year, with dark and bright gold being paired with raw, natural finishes. Metallic finishes will add the ‘ooh la la’ to your interiors.

the war on waste. Retail companies are also taking charge and looking for new ways to improve their environmental processes. As such, customers are seeking companies that take the matter seriously. Focus on Furniture’s Daylesford range is crafted from Australian messmate hardwood, grown naturally in Victorian forests.
Down to earth Timber finishes are the perfect way to let the outdoors in and feel a little summery all year round. Indoor plants are already here and they’re not going anywhere. Artificial plants look the part and the best bit is, you don’t need to water them!
Cool curves Curved joinery and finishes are trending, adding a new level of textural wizardry to any room.
Kinwolf Projects transformed the kitchen of this federation home with a curved wall, shaped from bendable tongue-and-groove plywood, crafted by Collective Joinery. The curved nook in this bedroom perfectly complements Linen House’s Renny bedding set. A curved basin makes a statement atop Highgrove Bathroom’s Oliver Wall Hung Vanity, elevating this bathroom to new heights.

PICK OF THE WEEK Jane Eyre Saturday, GEM, 7pm, PG (2011) Cary Fukunaga’s effort impressively surpasses all previous cinematic versions. An original approach that is still finely attuned to Charlotte Bronte’s classic 1847 novel, a confident cast, magnificent cinematography and exquisite detailing make this adaptation fresh and inspired. Australian actress Mia Wasikowska (pictured) deserves special mention as the leading lady – she embodies governess Jane Eyre perfectly, bringing the passionate heroine to life.

Moonlight
Sully Saturday, NBN, 8.10pm, PG (2016) With Tom Hanks (pictured) in the leading role, Clint Eastwood in the director’s chair, and the story of one of the most remarkable incidents in aviation history, you almost can’t go wrong. This movie goes beyond the 208 seconds when the flight floundered to look at the fallout from the incident, exploring the lasting effects it had on the hero of the piece, as he was hounded by the press and investigators. Also stars Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney and Anna Gunn.
Friday, SBS, 8.30pm, (2016) This delicate coming-of-age Oscar winner charts the maturation of Chiron (Trevante Rhodes) in three stages of his life. Based on a semi-autobiographical play, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight derives its strength from its introspective, understated storytelling and its complex characters. Drug dealer Juan (Mahershala Ali) becomes a mentor of Chiron, and themes of sexuality and masculinity are explored with tenderness and subtlety. Featuring an all-black cast, it is less about race that about one’s struggles with identity. Also starring Naomie Harris and Janelle Monae, Moonlight was made for a minuscule cost, and shows that cinema needn’t have a lavish budget to pull at the heartstrings.

Lily’s domestic life, family and loved ones will become more important throughout the next 12 months. She may need to tone down her social life so she can enjoy her home life more. Lily may be called upon to direct the affairs of her family or to assume more responsibility than usual. This is an excellent time for her to develop her creative abilities and to beautify her surroundings. It is also an exceptional time on the work front.

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
Try to use a tact and diplomacy in order to get what you want out of others. While you may be tempted to remind them of their duty or to point out all those things they should have done but haven’t, this approach won’t get you anywhere.
You may experience some intense emotions over the next few weeks or find that you are missing someone special. If this turns out to be the case, it could be worth taking a risk and getting in touch. You could be surprised by their response.
If you have to deal with awkward demanding children or petulant adults, you will be able to defuse the most troubling situation with ease and tact. Your ability to empathise with their point of view whilst maintaining a position of moral authority is very important.
This is the ideal time to get your finances back into shape and have control over debts and expenditures. You will be able to get some kind of grip on your finances and to apply the brakes to any overspending on your credit or debit cards.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
The message from the planets is one of hope, especially for communications in your close relationships. It’s rare that you’ll ever find yourself more in tune with your nearest and dearest so try to keep the conversation flowing because this should sort out any possible recent problems.
An interest in the family heritage might develop or things of long ago may re-enter your life this month. An interest in your childhood or possibly a passion for history or antiques, watching much-loved DVDs or listening to the music of yesteryear may also become a feature.
This month could see you take an interest in local politics, Aquarius, possibly due to issues which would have an effect on your locality. However, it is no good sounding off about such things unless you are up to date with the right information.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
There could be great news about your career this month and you could receive the recognition you have been working for. Even if that doesn’t apply, there are signs that there will soon be more money on the way to you via your job.
Your mind will be going full speed ahead during the next few weeks and you are bound to come up with some really great new ideas. You will be very busy, with the phone ringing off the hook and tonnes of emails dropping into your inbox.
Your chickens will come home to roost as all those good deeds you’ve done for others over the years will be repaid in some form. While you might not be repaid by those you helped or in quite the same way, the good you have done will come back to you.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21 You may feel the urge to change your career, to make a long-term commitment to a worthwhile cause or simply to demand recognition for past efforts. No matter how this ambitious phase manifests itself, you can be sure that your prospects are considerably boosted from now on.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 You may find yourself keen to study the Tarot cards, learn how to meditate or take an interest in photography. You may fancy making a small wager – but watch it! The stars are not good enough for you to put your shirt on anything!

My favourite things
COFFEE WITH FRIENDS I’m very active as a person. My hangout schedule includes a walk with friends, or a surf, followed by a coffee. We hit a few cute, different coffee places or do the good old servo coffee and car park hangs.
TRAINING I love training with my strength and conditioning trainer Adam Trypas, who, over the years, has not only helped me reach my physical peak, but also supports me mentally and has become a friend. I train with fellow local surfers, Ryan Callinan and Jacko Baker.
FAMILY
Photo Georgia Matts
I’m very thankful to have the family that I was born into. My parents packed up and left everything in South Africa and the five of us started a new life here in Newcastle. My parents gave up so much to give Lauren, Craig and I the best opportunities in life. We are all extremely close.

SURFING
Photo Ethan Smith/Surfing NSW
Philippa Anderson is a professional surfer, competing internationally on the World Qualifying Series. Hailing from the wave-rich shores of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Philippa feels honoured to call Newcastle home since she and her family emigrated at the age of 12. A previous Surfest winner, and Australasian Pro Junior Champion, Philippa has held an impressive world ranking of 20th or 21st since 2012 and continues to follow her dreams of breaking the top 17 to qualify for the Women’s World Championship Tour. Known for her explosive and progressive surfing and a humble, grateful attitude towards the world and her sport, Philippa hopes to be a positive role model to young girls with big dreams.
A beach lifestyle is all I can remember as a kid, so living in Newcastle is amazing. It’s hard not to enjoy this beautiful coastline, lovely beaches and great variety of waves on offer. Having Surfest, such a big event on my competition calendar, here at my favourite home break is special.
LOCAL SPORTING EVENTS Being a soccer fan and a player myself, if I’m home you’ll find me supporting our boys, the Knights and Jets. And you can’t forget the women’s Jets team either! A bunch of us go often to cheer them on. The atmosphere is amazing.
