Celebrating Harmony Week 2019

Newcastle Weekly contents

thursday 21 march 2019

This week...

It is with a heavy heart this week I reflect on the terror attack on the South Island New Zealand city of Christchurch. We have two Kiwis among us at Newcastle Weekly and I believe I speak for the rest of the team, and indeed Australia, when I say: We stand with you. Nobody should be vilified for the religion they choose to practise – let alone the 50 innocent people who were senselessly killed when they attended Friday prayers at two separate mosques. To think that an Australian-born man allegedly did this to our neighbours makes me sick to the stomach. Terror has no place in either one of our communities – nor anywhere else in the world. I admire the ever-graceful New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, for her measured, reassuring response to her nation in the wake of the attack. I can’t say the same for Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, who felt it pertinent to remind people of the “evil that is ever-present and would seek to strike out at any time”. This does little to nothing to allay fears – in fact, it does the opposite; it is the exact response farright extremists aim to incite. It is apt, then, that this week’s cover story is on Harmony Week: a time to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity. That amazing story on pages 22 and 23. Kia Kaha Aotearoa. - Georgia Osland

news Proposed changes to volunteers’ roles A raft of proposed changes will better educate Justices of the Peace (JPs) but may discriminate against technology-wary, or less digitallysavvy, members. That’s according to Northern NSW Federation of Justices of the Peace Secretary, Christine Cordingley. Thousands of registered JPs provide a free service throughout the Hunter Region, with most accessible after hours and at weekends. The primary roles of a JP are to serve as witnesses for people making a statutory declaration or affidavit, as well as certify that a copy of an original document is true and accurate. From April, the Department of Justice plans to introduce several reforms. Under the proposed changes, JPs

will need to complete a knowledge test prior to reappointment, while a new online system is set to launch for all new applicants and existing JPs. Mrs Cordingley believes that the review is one way for the department to cut down on the number of JPs across the state. However, she adds going fully online will hamper those who have not kept up-to-date with technology. “Currently, there is something like 94,000 JPs registered in NSW,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “In some cases, this may be the answer, as the JP has not undergone any training or signed any documentation since being appointed. “In other cases, the person may be active in the community, well educated in their duties, but just does not want to be involved with

technology.” Potential amendments to legislation also include the use of ‘JP (retired)’ for any community-based JP who retires from office after their 65th birthday with at least 10 years’ consecutive service; and a change to the Justices of the Peace Act 2002 to remove a need for applicants to be nominated by their local MP. Proposed changes will also allow NSW JPs to witness interstate and overseas documents in some instances, such as where another Australian jurisdiction has empowered them to do so, or if foreign authorities accept a form witnessed by a NSW JP. Mrs Cordingley claims the ability to execute interstate documents will relieve some confusion that exists if appropriate guidelines are implemented and training is provided.

SODEISHA

走泥社 CONNECTED to A U S T R A L I A

Newcastle Art Gallery is custodian of one of the largest collections of Sodeisha ceramics outside of Japan. Formed in post-war Kyoto, many Sodeisha artists came from families with long ceramic histories. In forming the movement, artists broke free from established practices and produced largely non-functional works. To recognise the dialogue between Sodeisha and ceramic practice today, Sodeisha: connected to Australia places the Gallery’s substantial collection alongside ten contemporary ceramicists from Australia and Japan. This significant exhibition also includes a site-specific installation by original Sodeisha member, Satoru Hoshino.

Nathan Zajac trains at Balance Collective in Hunter Street ahead of the amateur fight.

The fight of his life Nathan Zajac has dusted off his boxing gloves to train for an amateur fight and a cause he believes in. The Novocastrian will compete in three, two-minute rounds at Sydney’s Star Casino on Friday 5 April to raise awareness of mental health. “I boxed a little when I was a teenager,” Mr Zajac says. “Every guy has that little thing in there – they watch [movies like] Creed or Rocky and think they’d like to do that.” Mr Zajac was inspired to step into the ring after losing three friends to suicide within six months. He has since thrown himself into the challenge. An intense five-day-per-week training regime consists of 500 crunches, skipping, bag work, shadow boxing, strength and conditioning, and running. The father-of-two believes that balancing children and work with early morning starts and latenight finishes has shown him the importance of resilience. “This challenge was not something I’d ever thought about doing,” he says. “I haven’t hit a punching bag like this in over two decades, so this is what is going to really challenge me.

“But, while I’m going to be uncomfortable and the training is going to be testing, it is nothing compared to what people with mental illness endure on a daily basis.” Mr Zajac will pay tribute to the friends he has lost and raise money for anxiety, depression and suicide prevention through his chosen charity, beyondblue. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, three million Australians live with anxiety or depression, while only one in four men seek help. Mr Zajac says he hopes to make a difference. “If I can get out of my comfort zone to raise money to help even one person, if I can save one life, or just touch one person, it’ll all be worth it,” he says. “Since I’ve done this, I’ve had a lot of people come up to me to say this and that…[nearly] every single person has a story about suicide.” Mr Zajac’s employer, Australian Sports Nutrition, teamed up with professional sports promotion company, Corporate Fighter, for the blacktie event. news Regatta returns

Worst roads named

Wetlands’ new space

The Sailfest Newcastle Regatta will feature skiffs, catamarans, and two hallowed pieces of silverware when it returns next weekend. The event, set to take place from Friday 29 to Sunday 31 March, will include the 110-year-old Cock of the Harbour trophy for the fastest boat on the harbour and the Newcastle Harbour Regatta trophy, first contested in 1834. Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said it would attract sailors from right up and down the east coast, providing a boost to the local economy. “The Sailfest Regatta is a great way to help us realise our vision to create a vibrant and active city and we look forward to growing our relationship with organisers to really activate the harbour and its surrounds,” she said. Newcastle council also hopes the event will help a push to stage a stopover of the global Ocean Race in 2021. Formerly known as the Volvo Ocean Race, it is often described as the longest and toughest sporting event in the world. The 2021 event will begin in Alicante, Spain, with Newcastle aiming to be a port of call in its yet-to-be-confirmed route.

The New England Highway has been deemed the worst stretch of road in the Newcastle and Hunter Region as part of the largest transport survey in the state’s history. Launched in January, the survey aimed to give voters a voice in the lead-up to the 23 March state election. Nelson Bay Road placed second in the region, while the Pacific Highway at Hexham was third, followed by Newcastle Road. The primary reason for all four was congestion. Dowling Street, Dungog, rounded out the top five, with its condition flagged as the main concern. Areas that picked up the most votes were: Lake Macquarie (493), Newcastle (408), Port Stephens (386), Cessnock (301), and Maitland (194). “Across the region, motorists have called out congestion as their number-one concern,” NRMA spokesperson, Peter Khoury, said. “Where money is spent we see improvements, so I’m pleased to see both sides of politics pledging billions of dollars to our roads in the lead up to the election.”

A new visitor entry area and improved display spaces are on show at the Hunter Wetlands Centre after its stage-one redevelopment officially opened this week. Board chair, David Crofts, said a state government grant had helped to create a flexible space in the Visitor Centre, which would allow for a wide range of artistic media, performance, and cultural exhibitions to occur. “Our goal is to provide a vastly improved introduction to the wetlands centre and help visitors better understand the importance of wetlands to the environment and community wellbeing,” he said. “New technology will introduce visitors to the ever-changing world of wetlands in a more engaging and interactive way.” The first exhibition in the new space is by local artist Ruth Samuels. Ruth is a renowned watercolourist whose exhibition, Reflections, depicts the local birdlife, mangroves and rainforests. The Hunter Wetlands Centre is located at 1 Wetlands Place, Shortland.

news Search for next-gen greenies Chris Whackett has seen firsthand the steady revival of bushland and coastal rainforest previously destroyed by historic mining. The 41-year-old joined Fern Creek Gully Landcare Group at Dudley six years ago to lend a hand. He said the group’s monthly working bees had made a huge contribution during that time. “For a lot of other people my age, it can be difficult finding time – I have two children and a demanding job,” he said. “But, for me, it’s important to go, even for purely selfish reasons. “It’s getting outside in the bush, doing some manual work, and using my body. “It’s also about reconnecting with my community and working together for a common goal that’s external to my everyday life.” Despite its success, Fern Creek

Gully is one of the Landcare groups on the hunt for a new generation of fresh faces to help rehabilitate and protect wild areas throughout Lake Macquarie. The group recently launched a Facebook page to attract younger volunteers. Lake Macquarie Landcare Coordinator, Jason Harvey, said more than 200 volunteer groups managed to clear over 19 hectares of weeds and replanted native species across the city last year. However, he said most of the people involved were aged over 55 and there needed to be a “succession plan”. “The value of the effort they contributed last year would be knocking on the door of $1 million,” Mr Harvey said. “We’re hoping this next generation – people in their 30s

Landcare volunteers Sue Warren and Chris Whackett overlooking the gully.

and 40s who care about their local environment and want to do something for their community – will start to get involved.” Mr Harvey added there were obvious benefits to going outdoors and being active. “There is the community aspect – getting together with people from your local neighbourhood who are like-minded, forming new friendships, and building that sense

of pride and belonging. “There’s also an aspect of skill development. We’ve recently had a couple of young lads put their hands up to join us for this reason.” The Fern Creek Gully group meets on the first Saturday of the month, but meeting times vary for others across Lake Macquarie. news Rotarians to invade city for polio walk, conference

District 9685 members prepare for the mass End Polio Now walk in Newcastle next weekend.

Hundreds of Rotarians will descend on Newcastle for a mass End Polio Now walk. Polio, caused by the Poliovirus, is a serious disease that can lead to long-term disability, paralysis and death. Australia has been officially polio-free since 2000, while the number of cases worldwide plummeted from 350,000 in 1987 to just 31 last year.

The disease is now largely contained to a small geographic area along the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Rotary International, which has led a highprofile partnership that includes the World Health Organisation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF and the USA’s Centres for Disease and Control, aims to completely eradicate the poliovirus within the next three years. Apart from the walk, an annual conference will see about 500 Rotarians, partners and friends from District 9685 stay in Newcastle from Friday 29 to Sunday 31 March. District 9685 is one of the largest in Australia, with an area that stretches from the Blue Mountains, through Sydney’s northern suburbs, and up to the Central Coast. Governor Susan Wakefield OAM said her conference team had the full support of District 9670 – Newcastle and surrounds – to secure the NEX Centre in King Street and organise the weekend’s program. “We have attended a number of large Rotary events in Newcastle over the years and always

found the venues and city easy to navigate,” she said. “On visiting the city and dealing with the Newcastle council events staff and events team at NEX, we’ve been delighted with the level of expertise and the friendly way we have interacted with the teams involved. “Add to that [the city’s] natural beauty – why would we not choose Newcastle?” The conference will be opened by Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes on the Saturday morning at 8.30am. The End Polio Now walk is due to start that afternoon at 2.30pm at Civic Park. Members of the public are welcome to attend and are asked to wear a red shirt. The Sunday program will include a talk from former federal police officer, Libby Bleakley, on ‘Inspiring Lives in East Timor’; Dr Vera Sistenich on Aboriginal health, medical education, asylum seekers and emergency medicine in the Congo; and detective superintendent Deborah Wallace on ‘My Life of Crime’. - Ben Murphy

Water leak tool A new online platform will now allow people to quickly report water leaks and upload photos. Hunter Water managing director Jim Bentley said the National Performance Report showed the corporation had reduced leakage across its network by almost 20% over two years. He added this was helped by customers who informed Hunter Water of leaks. “In the past six months, our customers have reported more than 3,000 water leaks,” Mr Bentley said. “We’ve made it our priority to fix them as quickly as we can, with almost half of these leaks repaired or resolved within two days. “Now that it is easier for people to inform us through the online reporting tool, we aim to be even faster in our response.” Go to hunterwater.com.au/leak for more information.

Café Tempest staff Jenni Masden, Julie Walter and Chelsea Tofa lend a hand.

Businesses link together in wider support network Wallsend’s Café Tempest is the first business to officially become part of the Connecting the Hunter program – an extension of the annual Hunter Homeless Connect Day. The new program provides a

dignified and practical way for businesses to offer goods and services to those experiencing homelessness all year round, not just once a year. At Café Tempest, people doing

it tough can fill their bellies without worry. It’s an inclusive space, where Julie Walter has been supporting the local community for the past three years. Julie says she’s “happy to assist people who are legitimately in need” by providing a meal, drink, a place to charge their phones and a welcoming space to chill out. The café’s sign says it all: ‘Enter as strangers, leave as friends’ – a theme to be carried throughout the Connecting the Hunter program. Marg McKay from Path 2 Change works with homeless youth, and already utilises the program by linking in young people with the café, especially when they haven’t eaten for a few days. “Life feels easier when you’ve at least had breakfast,” she says. “Then we address the other issues going on.” Hunter Homeless Connect wants to expand its new program to offer the widest support network possible

to the rising number of people experiencing homelessness. Businesses may be able to donate Opal cards, washing services, food vouchers, phone credit, driving lessons, swags, tents, haircuts or linen. They can also provide a space where people experiencing homelessness can charge a phone, heat a meal, use a first-aid kit or have a shower. Participating businesses will be identified by Connecting the Hunter decal in their shopfront windows, indicating that they provide basic services via a voucher system. Those in need will receive vouchers via referral from Specialist Homelessness Services (SHS), to be used at the nominated businesses. If you think you can help, email connecting@hunterhomelessconnect. org.au with your business name, primary contact, phone number, email address, and the goods or services on offer.

cover story Sandy stands with refugees

He was displaced by war, walked for 23 days across the African desert to make a phone call to his wife, and had limited contact with her for over a decade. Newcastle citizen John Sandy has gone through more trauma than most can fathom, but he is determined to help other refugees within the Hunter community. John spoke of his experiences at Holy Family Primary School, Merewether, in the lead-up to a week of celebrations for the 20th anniversary of Harmony Day today (Thursday 21 March). He said diversity was strength, in every shape and form. “Harmony Day, to me, in Australia is the community coming together, regardless of who you are, what language you speak, or what your background is,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “It is about building community strength and learning to appreciate our diversity.” John arrived in Australia as a refugee after years of hardship. While at a refugee camp in Guinea, he learned that his wife had been transported to the other

side of the world, to Australia, as a refugee. He heard that a man in another camp, thousands of kilometres away in the Ivory Coast, had a mobile phone. So, John set off on foot across the scorching desert, walking roughly the equivalent distance between Adelaide and Sydney with little food and water. He eventually found the man and made a call, but that wasn’t the end of his struggles. The Guinea camp took six years to process his refugee application to come to Australia – only for it to be rejected. Another attempt, on a spouse visa, took six more years. John was finally reunited with his wife again in Newcastle in 2011. He has since taken up the role of project liaison officer with the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle’s Development and Relief Agency (DARA). John said he wanted to build positive relationships with other males who suffered from high levels of trauma. “Becoming a refugee is really challenging,” he

said. “[DARA] just want to reassure them, really listen to them, and try to walk them through their pathway. “When they come to Newcastle, they can’t speak the language, they don’t have jobs, they’ve lost their roles, and they are so frustrated.” John said DARA offered English lessons, as well as a safe space to socialise, build confidence and self-worth, and show support. He also works with young people to provide safety advice for activities such as riding a bike and going to the beach. “Young people that come into Australia from refugee backgrounds are so confused with all the trauma,” John said. “Everybody wants to ride a bike – but I said to them, it’s so important to ride a bike, but in Australia, there are rules and regulations. “They [also] want to go to the beach and swim, but you’ve got to know your safety areas.” John added DARA ultimately aimed to create equal access to opportunities, resources, and services in the community. Harmony Week celebrations will conclude on Saturday 23 March. - Ben Murphy

Newcastle council has completed the sale of its Roundhouse building in King Street. The iconic building was reportedly sold to Crystalbrook Collection for 22% above valuation. A portion of the funds from the sale will go to fitting out the council’s new administration building on the corner of Stewart Avenue and Hunter Street. It will oversee the relocation of 425 staff, who are currently spread across the 41-year-old Roundhouse, the 114-year-old Fred Ash Building and the 90-year-old city hall. The actual cost, according to the council, of relocating from the three buildings to the new single office location will be around $145,000. Chief executive, Jeremy Bath, said the full fit-out contract would be brought to the council in April for consideration. “The estimated cost is $8.5 million, which is more than the $7 million we predicted 18 months ago,” he said. “That’s an estimate, which hopefully will come in lower due to the competitive tender process.” The Roundhouse building will be converted into the city’s first five-star hotel.

sport Fitzgibbons, Ribeiro win Sally Fitzgibbons and Alex Ribeiro battled through a huge field of surfers to claim victory in the 34th annual Surfest in Newcastle at the weekend. Fitzgibbons joined the likes of Mick Fanning, Pam Burridge and Rebecca Woods as a three-time Surfest champion. The world number six beat fellow Australian, Isabella Nichols, who was appearing in her first QS6000 final, to lift the Holmes Civil Developments Pro trophy at Merewether Beach. Fitzgibbons had just recovered from a fractured shoulder and overcame several niggling injuries during the week, which nearly saw her pull out of the event. In the men’s Burton Automotive Pro final, Ribeiro took on fellow

Andre posted excellent scores on Sunday but had a premonition that he would make it to the decider, only to fall at the final hurdle. “I have been trying to visualise winning all week but for some reason only thought I’d get second, which is so strange,” he said. “This has been a great week in Newcastle and it was great to have such good waves on the final day.”

Gutsy Knights off the mark Newcastle kicked off its 2019 NRL campaign with a gutsy, confidence-boosting 14-8 win over the Cronulla Sharks at McDonald Jones Stadium. A crowd of 21,813 watched on as both sides’ defence dominated in a scoreless first half. The deadlock was finally broken in the 47th minute when Cronulla recruit Shaun Johnson booted a penalty goal to make it 2-0. Newcastle responded with its own penalty goal, and then, with 11 minutes left, former Melbourne forward Tim Glasby raced through a gap to score the game’s first try. However, drama ensued shortly afterwards. In the 75th minute, Josh Dugan fumbled a Johnson grubber in his attempt to score. A review, though, spotted Newcastle winger Edrick Lee’s tackle on Sione Katoa as the Sharks

Jets comeback thwarted Former Jet Ben Kennedy came back to haunt his old side as the Central Coast Mariners shocked Newcastle 3-2 in a thriller. Kennedy, in goal for the Mariners, thwarted a determined Jets comeback in second-half stoppage time on Saturday as he saved two penalty attempts from striker Roy O’Donovan. The Mariners had earlier taken a 3-0 lead through goals to Jordan Murray, Jem Karachan and Connor Pain. However, Newcastle hit back as O’Donovan and Ronnie Vargas scored in the 74th and 81st minute to set-up the dramatic finale. The Jets travel to New Zealand next weekend to take on Wellington. The action starts at 5.35pm on Saturday 30 March.

man chased the kick. It was controversially ruled a penalty try, and Johnson’s successful conversion made it 8-all. Despite the call, Lee quickly redeemed himself as he

intercepted a Chad Townsend pass and raced 80 metres to score the match-winner for the Knights. Newcastle will face the Penrith Panthers at home this Saturday 23 March from 5.30pm.

Create the berry best grazing board Food stylist Megann Evans shares her top tips to make your next platter berry appealing. Simple to stunning

Go with the flow

Fresh Aussie raspberries and blackberries are a must for grazing boards. Their flavour profi le cuts through rich, creamy and salty accompaniments, and they are also a great palate cleanser between flavours. Visually, the brightness of the raspberries and depth of the blackberries add great contrast to the board.

Arrange your ingredients in curves, an “S” or in triangles for striking visual balance. Avoid large mounds or sections – separate produce and spread it out. Place your most solid and largest pieces fi rst, then work your way down to the smaller pieces.

Perfect pairings Fresh berries pair perfectly with cheeses. Opt for an assortment of good quality soft and hard cheeses with different flavours, textures and colours – think white rind, blue, red wax and yellow.

Texture is key Texture is often a forgotten style component. Keep it interesting with smooth and coarse crackers, dehydrated fruits and lusciously plump fresh raspberries and blackberries. Try scrunching brown parchment paper underneath cheeses – it is visually beautiful and adds texture.

Props, props, props Use a neutral colour palette for props – bowls, plates, serving trays, dishes and cutlery – to make the platter ingredients pop. The more unique the props, the better, so keep an eye out at secondhand stores or markets.

Gorgeous garnish For a green and gorgeous fi nish, and to perfectly contrast the fresh berries and add texture, garnish with herbs such as bay leaves, rosemary or lemon thyme.

Unzip your tech knowledge In today’s fast-paced, high-tech world, digital savviness is very telling of age. Children these days have an almost innate understanding of technology and social media, while their parents and grandparents aren’t so adept. Enter: Unzip – a podcast created by Novocastrians Andy Gallagher and Katherine Sneddon. The pair have teamed up to help parents stay in touch with the internet, technology and everything their kids already know. Gallagher and Sneddon are two very different parents. Gallagher is a self-confessed nerd who has been building computers since he was a teenager. His ability to know vast amounts of detail in all things tech often leaves

Sneddon speechless. In contrast, Sneddon is happiest when she is in the garden and is the first to admit that she doesn’t exactly have her finger on the pulse. When the two went on a road trip together for work, after having only met briefly beforehand, both came prepared to avoid awkward silences and small talk: Gallagher with a swag of niche podcasts to listen to, and Sneddon with a pillow to sleep. As it turned out, there was no need for the back-up plan as they soon discovered a shared love of podcasts and plenty of entertaining banter and laughs ensued. It was when Sneddon started asking Gallagher if Fortnite was the evil game she’d heard it was, and how could she back up her phone so that she was able take photos again,

Unzip podcast creators Katherine Sneddon and Andy Gallagher.

she realised how little she actually knew and that maybe she wasn’t alone in her blissful ignorance. Gallagher was her ticket to becoming a tech-savvy, super-cool mum, and so, Unzip was born. “Unzip is for everyone, but I think it is especially interesting to parents because there is so much stuff out there, that any minute now, our kids will come home talking about, asking us about and getting involved in, that I think we at least need to

know the basics,” Sneddon says. “[The podcast] is your shortcut to all the answers that you didn’t know you needed to ask.” Unzip is available via your favourite podcast app on Apple and Android devices, with five episodes ready to download, covering the Momo Challenge, TikTok, mystery boxes, social media, and the word on every parent’s lips: Fortnite. Your kids won’t know what’s hit them.

Newcastle Comedy Festival founder Andrew Milos with Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes at the launch.

Ready, set, laugh There’s no turning back now: selfprofessed “comedy nerd” Andrew Milos was all smiles at the launch of the inaugural Newcastle Comedy Festival.

Set to burst onto the scene in May, the city’s first comedy festival to call its own will be packed with grassroots talent as well as big names such as writer, television

and radio presenter Tommy Little; Best Comedy at Melbourne Fringe 2017 nominee Rowan Thambar; and Triple J lunch presenter Gen Fricker. The festival will be staged from Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 May across three CBD venues, all within walking distance of one another: the Civic Theatre, The Happy Wombat, and The Clarendon Hotel. Festival highlights include a gala night at the Civic Theatre on Friday night, with an after party to follow at The Clarendon Hotel, where you can even catch Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes on the DJ set; as well as solo shows by every almost comedian on the line-up throughout Saturday and Sunday. There are also some yet-to-beannounced kids’ shows set to be added. Festival founder and director Milos says he’s feeling “Zen” in the final months before the big unveiling. “I was anxious in the planning stages but now I’ve got a strong

feeling it’s going to succeed,” he says. “I’ve done everything I can now; all that’s left to do is promote it, so I’m feeling pretty Zen. “One of the things that helps, I think, is the relationships I’ve formed with everyone on the comedy scene here – that makes a big difference.” Milos grew up around comedy and now hosts his own comedy nights at The Happy Wombat, where 10% of the proceeds go to a different, often Newcastle-based charity each month. That same giving spirit is imbued in the comedy festival, of which Milos’ main aim is to encourage investment in Newcastle. “If I didn’t do it, somebody else would have come in from out of town and pocketed the money,” he says. “This way, Newcastle wins.” Visit newycomedyfest.com for a full list of shows or to buy tickets. - Georgia Osland

How Far Can Loving kindness Take Us?

Beat the Holiday rush!

Serendipitous meeting spurs author’s first book After a serendipitous encounter with a war survivor, Canadian Roxi Harms felt compelled to share her new friend’s story – despite the fact she had no writing experience. Harms met 83-year-old Adam Baumann at a neighbouring villa while holidaying in Costa Rica seven years ago. She said she “instantly” connected with Baumann, who was born in an isolated village in eastern Hungary between the great wars, and had quite the story to tell. His life took one tumultuous turn after another as Hitler hurtled Europe into the greatest war in history. A rebellious teen fleeing the iron fist of his father, Baumann found himself on the Eastern Front, trapped in service to the Fuhrer, battling the Russian Red Army. “I said to my husband: ‘Somebody’s got to write this down’,” Harms told Newcastle Weekly. “In all honesty, I didn’t mean me.” Alas, fate had already set its wheels in motion, and before too long, Harms was undertaking writing courses in order to publish her debut novel, based on Baumann’s story. As it turned out, the pair only lived an hour away from one another in Canada – the fi rst country (of Australia, Argentina and Canada) to accept Baumann’s residency application after the war, or else he might have become an Australian citizen, and the pair would never have crossed paths. Over the next few years, Harms made countless trips to

Baumann’s house to record more than 400 interviews with him. “Many stories he retold because I wanted more detail; he was always able to recall it – he has an amazing memory,” Harms said. When Harms and her husband left Canada occasionally to visit their holiday home in Newcastle, the fledgling author and war veteran would still communicate via Skype, which Harms taught Baumann how to use. It was here that two Novocastrian friends – Georgia Drinkwater and Jenine Hughes – helped Harms transcribe hundreds of hours’ worth of interviews early on in the project. Now the journey has come full circle, with Harms returning to Newcastle next week to launch her book, The Upside of Hunger. Harms will share more about the book, and Baumann, at The Press Book House on Saturday 30 March from 4pm to 6pm. Anyone is welcome to turn up on the day, and there will be limited copies of the book for sale (those who miss out can grab a copy via Amazon or Booktopia). Neither Harms nor Baumann are profiting from the book, with all proceeds going towards a scholarship fund for underprivileged kids. They are also working with three high schools in Canada to present Baumann’s story and use the novel as a teaching tool. Harms eventually wants to make a documentary. “It’s important for younger people to hear these stories, otherwise they’ll be lost,” she says. - Georgia Osland

lifestyle, with up to 5,000 plants ranging from fiddle leaf fig favourites to the celebrated Calatheas. Shoppers can access locallygrown or sourced stock while receiving great advice for the novice to the advanced plant collector. Desert Sunday Co proprietor Amanda Marsh says the environment is a prominent issue in this Saturday’s state election.

“Our regular customers are making choices towards a more sustainable lifestyle; aiming for zero waste, low plastic and reducing their carbon footprint,” she says. Although the environmental and health benefits of plants are well-known, the nursery industry is working to overcome waste generated by plastic pots, which is why you can bring along your washed and unused plastic pots to House Plant Revival and exchange them for more suitable sizes through the Pot Cycling program. The event organisers will then recycle any pots that are leftover.

in the garden

Finally, autumn and rain has arrived – my deciduous standard trees Catalpas are brown and dropping leaves. This is normally an indicator that the ground below is cooling off, but this year, noticing the Plane Trees in the city have been brown for some weeks, I think this can be attributed to the lack of rain and heat during summer. It is surprising that some of nature’s most colourful plants bloom in March, for example Tibouchina Alstonville, which bears bright purple flowers over a long period. Each year, I wait eagerly for Sasanqua camellias to bloom – this versatile, hardy shrub will grow in sun or shade, it weathers heat and storm, and is ideal for screening along a narrow driveway.

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

Although we hedge Golden Durantas, when allowed to grow freely, at this time of year they produce blue blooms. Very noticeable this year are the magnificent colours of Crepe Myrtles. The flowers are borne on large terminal clusters in a range of colours: pinks, red, mauve, purple and now the very popular white.

THIS WEEK • For those who forgot to plant sweet peas on St. Patrick’s Day, the weather is ideal now. • If your beds are prepared with poultry manure, it is safe to finally plant pansies. • It would be wise now, after rain, to apply dolomite to roses.

Downsizers jump over stamp duty barriers Stamp duty can be a major deterrence for over 55s looking to downsize, however many are not aware of the options available to avoid this added cost. A number of industry and consumer bodies have advocated for seniors concessions on stamp duty, highlighting this as a barrier for over 55s looking to unlock the equity in their home and downsize, along with other key obstacles such as a lack of affordable ageappropriate housing. Currently, downsizers living in New South Wales looking to find a more modest home of about $500,000 would be faced with paying an estimated $17,990 in stamp duty. Over 55s finance expert and author, Rachel Lane, said stamp duty has played a prominent role in tax reform debates as it can be a major inhibitor of mobility for people seeking to move homes. “It is well-documented that this is a particular issue affecting asset-rich, cash-poor seniors, who are subsequently staying in a large

family home to avoid paying thousands of dollars in stamp duty in order to downsize. “Many people do not realise an alternative housing solution exists to provide downsizers with ways to access their home equity while negating the need to pay stamp duty fees. “For example, Ingenia Lifestyle’s land lease ownership model is unique in that buyers purchase a new home and lease, rather than own, the land which eliminates the need to pay stamp duty. “This also ensures a much more affordable entry price point and means new residents are often able to free up a substantial amount of equity raised in the sale of their previous home and have more funds to enjoy their golden years,” Rachel said. Ingenia Lifestyle The Grange has brand new homes selling now from $357,000, with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and 1 car space, offering a real opportunity for over 55s to unlock the existing equity in their old family home and downsize into a brand new one. “It’s also a welcome relief for over 55s looking to downsize without having to pay stamp duty costs,” Rachel said.

PICK OF THE WEEK Maleficent Saturday, 7TWO, 7pm, PG (2014) Disney doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to live-action blockbusters – as those unfortunate enough to have paid to see The Lone Ranger or John Carter would attest – but this time the company is playing it a little safer, taking one of the world’s most famous and beautiful movie stars (Angelina Jolie) and dressing her up as the baddie in a new take on the well-known tale of Sleeping Beauty. Elle Fanning (pictured) plays Princess Aurora (aka Sleeping Beauty).

Friday

Coach Carter

Children Of Men Saturday, SBS VLND, 8.30pm, MA15+ (2006) Absolutely brilliant sci-fi thriller from director Alfonso Cuarón (Y Tu Mamá También), based on a P.D. James novel which presents a chilling vision of 2027. In a world where women are infertile, a one-time activist (Clive Owen) is forcibly recruited by his “terrorist” ex-lover (Julianne Moore) to escort humankind’s sole pregnant woman to safety – an act that could potentially save mankind from extinction. Featuring some of the finest hand-held camerawork you’ll ever see. Also stars Michael Caine (pictured).

Sunday, WIN BOLD, 9pm, M (2005) Exceedingly familiar but undeniably good-hearted basketball-themed drama (based on fact) which sees the ever-solid Samuel L. Jackson (pictured) take on the role of Ken Carter, who accepts the challenge of coaching his old high school’s hoops team. Forcing all his players to sign a contract saying they’ll always attend their classes (and sit in the front row) and forcing them to wear suitable, neat attire on game days, initially Carter’s hardline measures pay off and result in a winning streak, but complacency soon seeps in.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

With Venus in your house of associations and friendships this month, the world is a happier place. Try being more tactful with loved ones. Remember the old saying: it is far easier to catch flies with honey than with vinegar. But who wants to catch flies anyway?

Patience may be a dirty word to you at the moment yet you’d be wise to exercise some, especially since this mood will soon pass. If you’re not careful, you’ll be left with a resentful family unit or work colleagues who may not appreciate any counterproductive impatience.

This is a week when friends may drop in unannounced and a family member may bring home a gift or treat just for you. A loan may be repaid and any favours that you have done for others will also be returned to you in coming weeks.

This is the ideal time to learn how to value yourself and to focus on gaining greater self-confidence. You may also find yourself caught up in the strange phenomenon of paying back a karmic debt, however, once you take responsibility for your actions this will be quickly resolved.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY A woman may be instrumental in helping you solve money issues or a business problem of some kind. This woman may not be a specialist in your own particular sphere, but her sound common sense ideas will help you to see your situation more clearly.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

NW0087

News from loved ones, close friends, relatives or colleagues who live at a distance will cheer you up and you may even receive an invitation to a special event. This is an excellent time for getting started on any kind of long-term creative project.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG Teamwork is the key to success this month. You are beginning to realise you must do something to polish up your image at work. Perhaps this is a time when you will feel driven to revamp your image, to treat yourself to a new outfit or new hairstyle.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT You may have some kind of inspired idea which helps you to find an easy way through an awkward problem. A friend may help out at work or at home and in addition to this, any help that you give others will be greatly appreciated.

Memory Lane Antiques and Décor

The year ahead is a time for fresh starts and new beginnings, so Constance should assert herself, exercise her initiative and creative powers, be independent and follow the counsel from her own inner voice. It is time for her to make plans and to put them into action, to promote her ideas and make the changes she has been thinking about especially with her career and business. Socially this can be a very active year as Constance will become more in demand.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV Some good meaningful conversations in the family will prove enlightening this month. Brothers, sisters, colleagues, neighbours and pals may visit you and if they do, you could enjoy their company better than almost any that you have had for quite some time.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB You may decide to trade your vehicle in now so you can continue to be mobile and economical at the same time. If you need to get on the phone to deal with things on a practical or business level, you will make excellent progress.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

The next few weeks are a wonderful time for putting your ideas across to other people. If you want to speak of how you feel or to make them understand what makes you tick, you will find just the right language in which to do this.

Your mood may be dreamy and possibly out of touch with reality. This doesn’t matter because there are times when we all need to allow our creative or artistic tendencies to come to the fore, rather than to concentrate on the practicalities of life.

My favourite things

ITALY

In 2018 we purchased our little piece of Italian paradise in San Vito dei Normanni in Southern Italy. Living in Italy has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. For now, it’s just for holidays but one can never plan their retirement too soon.

MY JOB I am privileged to be in a job I absolutely love and have a passion for. I work as part of an amazing team that does lots of wonderful work. On World Cancer Day, 4 February, we successfully launched a new Cancer App for our patients. It’s available free from the App stores and I am extremely proud!

DINING OUT Okay, so this is quite in contrast with the exercise, but I am lucky enough to live in Newcastle, and with the amazing revitalisation of the city has come lots of new restaurants and small bars. I have many favourites but have recently been taken by the panAsian delights at Ginger Megs.

Gillian Blanchard has a passion for caring for vulnerable people in our society. Growing up among four siblings in Muswellbrook, Gillian is deep-rooted into the Hunter and Newcastle region and, as such, has committed 20 years of her nursing career to Calvary Mater Newcastle. Her insatiable hunger for education and passion for caring has seen her become involved in many oncology projects around symptom management to help patients through their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Gillian was most recently project lead for the hospital’s new Cancer App, CANcierge. The App provides easily accessible, relevant and reliable information to help navigate cancer care at Calvary Mater Newcastle. As a conjoint lecturer with the University of Newcastle, Gillian is also passionate about inspiring future nursing generations. 70

FAMILY My husband Ian and I welcomed our beautiful granddaughter Olive to our family last year. She is an absolute delight and Christmas was made that little bit more special having her around. She is the best gift.

EXERCISE Being in oncology, I know the importance of exercise in reducing my risk of disease, particularly many cancers. I exercise at The Gorilla Pit in Wickham four days a week. My trainer, Kate, is ruthless but I am grateful for the push and encouragement she gives me.
