This week...

I feel as though, this past week, Mother Nature has very pointedly said our endless summer has, indeed, come to an end. I know this because one day I was wearing shorts and a T-shirt to walk the dog of a morning, and the very next I was rugged up in jeans and a jacket. I was also reminded by the lovely old lady we bump into every other day, as we exchange passing pleasantries about the weather. While winter is my least favourite season, I can't help but breathe a sigh of relief at the cool change and steady rainfall we've been having as we plunge into mid-autumn. I can tolerate crisp nights and early mornings in exchange for sunny afternoons, but ask me again when it's painfully cold to get out of bed or undress for a shower: you'll find me wishing for summer's sweet return in those moments. Still, there is beauty in every season (including wretched winter), and I shall do my best to find it. Keeping on the theme of cooler weather – who loves comfort food?! (I told you there was beauty in every season). Our cover star this week is a satiating sweet potato pasta bake recipe that I personally can't wait to try. There's also a yummy sweet potato gnocchi recipe in Taste, if you're feeling brave. - Georgia Osland

news Space for youth to talk Young people in Port Stephens have a safe space to talk about the challenges or issues they face after the launch of a new service. Charity group Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) provides free counselling for 12-to18-year-olds at two rooms inside Tomaree Library and Community Centre, Salamander Bay. The community-based program, known as Jupiter – A Space to Talk, officially launched last week. COPSY president, John de Ridder, said the charity had worked hard to introduce the service. “A few of us came up with the concept back in 2014 but, as with most things, you don’t get funding and community support unless it’s evidence-based,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “A 2016 report found, as we expected, that there was a real need

for it here. “The benchmark for mental health is headspace, but the nearest [locations] are in Maitland and Newcastle – that’s just too far for kids on the peninsula here.” Mr de Ridder added COPSY initially wanted to launch the service 12 months ago but found it difficult to attract funds for psychologists. He said the charity then opted to wait and see if it proved successful. “We have now got three psychologists part-time,” he said. “[The service] actually started after Christmas, but we didn’t want to launch until we knew it was working properly, and I’m very pleased to say that it is. “Anecdotal evidence, as well as what’s in the report, told us that we’re going to have lots of visitors, so we’ve just got to figure out how to handle that demand.”

news Report reveals nation’s wealth distribution A Newcastle postcode has been listed as the nation’s poorest. The Australian Taxation Office released its annual Taxation Statistics last week, which included data from a total of 16.5 million 2017 income tax returns. The report named postcode 2308 – largely made up of student accommodation at the University of Newcastle, Callaghan – as the lowest-earning area with an average taxable income of $20,589. Queensland’s 4611 postcode, which lies about two-and-a-half hours north of Toowoomba, was the second lowest at $23,225, while Victoria’s 3482 postcode, roughly two hours from Bendigo, ranked third on $24,346. The University of NSW – postcode 2052 – rounded out the bottom four with an average taxable income of $24,855. In comparison, Sydney’s 2108 postcode, which covers Coasters Retreat, Currawong Beach and Palm Beach, recorded an average taxable income of $230,330 – the highest in the nation.

The report also named Melbourne’s 3142, taking in Toorak and Hawksburn, as second on the highest average taxable income list on $193,904, while Sydney’s 2027 – Darling Point, Edgecliff and Point Piper – was third on $187,769. Hunter Business Chamber chief executive, Bob Hawes, said the postcode index was an “interesting measure of the distribution of wealth”. However, he believed it did not paint an entirely true picture of income by profession or location. “There are many variables that can influence someone’s taxable income, including the status under which their [tax] returns are lodged,” Mr Hawes told Newcastle Weekly. “While it’s always of concern to see a local suburb among the lowest ranked in terms of income, the Callaghan statistic reflects the fact that the suburb is based on [the] footprint of the university and its residents are largely full-time students living on

campus. “I suspect there are few other postcodes with such a proportionally heavy population of students.” Mr Hawes said, while the University of NSW was similarly ranked within the bottom 10 postcodes, its higher average income possibly pointed to the availability of more student work options in proximity to the campus or a greater number of students combining work and study. Apart from the richest and poorest suburbs, the report also revealed the highestpaid occupations in the nation. Surgeons had the highest average taxable income of $394,866 while anaesthetists were second on $367,343, and internal medicine specialists third with $299,378. Out of 1,100 occupations recorded, there were 72 where females earned a higher average taxable income than males. Some of these included professional surfers, authors, magistrates, and illustrators. -Ben Murphy

Newcastle’s Park and Ride is set to continue for at least another month as Newcastle council examines how much it will cost to keep the popular transport service afloat. The state government has provided temporary funding for the service since November 2017 in a bid to reduce the impact of the light rail’s construction. However, Newcastle council’s chief executive, Jeremy Bath, claimed it had to step in last week because Transport for NSW refused to publicly indicate whether it would still support the park and ride. Mr Bath added the service would continue from McDonald Jones Stadium to the CBD during April while a detailed cost analysis was undertaken. “In a city that has traditionally refused to use public transport, the park and ride has proved Novocastrians will catch a bus to work when the service is affordable and reliable,” he said. “While public transport is very clearly a responsibility of the NSW government, we owe it to the almost 1,000 passengers that use the park and ride weekly to do everything we can to continue the service.” Mr Bath believed that, under the current model, the service operated at a cost of about $500,000 a year, but added the council would look at ways to reduce this amount.

He claimed Transport for NSW’s refusal to confirm whether it would continue to fund the service had created angst and frustration for its users. “[Council] is firmly of the opinion that it makes no sense to shut off funding to a public transport service that is incredibly popular, especially one that is a key promise in TfNSW’s own future transport plans,” Mr Bath said. However, Transport for NSW stated funding for the park and ride was always linked to the light rail construction period and was never guaranteed beyond that timeframe. It added about 135 to 225 people used the service each day and believed current timetable bus routes that service the city had the capacity to carry these customers. Under the new bus network, 37% of the population live within 400 metres of a bus stop that offers a frequent, 15-minute service, according to Transport for NSW. “We encourage locals to consider nearby public transport options that may suit their travel needs,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson told Newcastle Weekly. “Alternatively, customers may choose to park their car close to any frequent bus route and complete their journey into the city on public transport.” - Ben Murphy

news Appetite for more nightlife An inaugural festival has been announced amid plans to boost Lake Macquarie’s night-time economy. The Belmont Beers, Blues and BBQ event is expected to attract hundreds of live music lovers and foodies from across the state next month. Lake Macquarie council’s manager of arts, culture and tourism, Jacqui Hemsley, said it would be a great chance to sample global barbecue cuisines, meet local brewers and enjoy the atmosphere on Belmont south foreshore. “Nothing beats a barbecue, cold beer and great music,” she said. “Combined with the gorgeous foreshore of Lake Macquarie, we are sure our first Belmont Beers, Blues and BBQ event will be a huge success.” The new festival comes as part of a shift towards more evening and

night-time events. In October 2018, the council sought feedback and ideas on what activities, events and improvements residents would like to see afterdark. It then developed the draft Lake Macquarie Night-Time Economy Action Plan, which is now on display until Thursday 18 April. The plan aims to improve liveability and transform the city into a major economic driver within the Hunter Region. Lake Macquarie mayor, Kay Fraser, said there was an appetite for more activities in the community. “Our draft night-time economy action plan identified a need for diversity in the events we offer, as well as more options in terms of evening and night-time events in Lake Macquarie,” she said. “I am sure this event will be a

huge success and hope to see it become an annual event on the Lake Macquarie festival and events scene.” Some of the actions in the plan include a trial of creative lighting and other temporary lighting in key locations across the city; and to investigate opportunities to help groups to activate public spaces of an evening. The council also wants to explore the potential for night-time food markets, cinemas and familyfriendly events in parks and public

spaces, and a possible extension of opening hours for cultural venues and community facilities. The Belmont Beers, Blues and BBQ festival will feature a musical line-up including MC Richard King, Bondi Cigars, Kevin Borich, Greg Bryce Blues Band, and Catfish Soup. It will start at 5pm on Saturday 25 May and is 18+ only. Tickets cost $50 per person, plus a booking fee. The Station is under new management and changes are afoot to bring more events and opportunities to the precinct. The state government’s Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation (HCCDC) has announced it will manage the former Newcastle railway site, on the corner of Scott and Watt streets, for the next 12 months. Non-profit group Renew Newcastle won the tender to operate The Station prior to its official launch last September and then worked with 25 individuals, businesses and organisations to host almost 40 events at the space. Activities included parkour, live art and yoga, robotics, music and comedy. However, Renew was forced to fold in February after 10

offering that exists for a limited time before the site’s final use is established and other exciting opportunities are presented. “Although the timeframe isn’t long-term, we see such a great chance to be a part of a unique activation project and, so far, the interest is encouraging.” HCCDC is set to support its plans by undertaking construction works to link Market Street Lawn and The Station with a temporary grassed area and footpaths. It also intends to remove nonessential perimeter fencing along Wharf Road and lower other site fencing to better promote the location as an accessible destination, nestled between city and harbour. news Celebrity koala’s climb to the top Morton was already quite the celebrity within Port Stephens, but the lovable koala’s popularity reached new heights when his journey featured in a video that went viral online. In June 2017, Morton’s mother, Nikita, was hit and killed by a car. The distressed driver called Port Stephens Koalas volunteers, who arrived at the scene and realised a joey was still alive in her pouch. Following a difficult process, which involved extracting pap – a specialised form of faeces or droppings that are an essential part of a young koala’s diet – little Morton was sent to live with one of the charity’s carers, Julie Jennings. “[Morton] was only 340 grams when we got him – we kept him on a heat pad in a little homemade pouch and he was given milk every three hours initially,” Ms Jennings said. “When he was 12 months old, milk was only given once a day, and then he was weaned off it at two-and-a-half kilograms, so it is a very long, drawn-out process.” Ms Jennings said Morton started to use a mini-gym to simulate what he would typically do

in the wild. “We are their ‘mum’, but they are not pets so, when it’s time for them to leave, they go through a dehumanising process,” she said. Morton was eventually released at a secret location, free from dogs, cars and people. His journey, from when he was a tiny joey through to his release into the wild, was captured on a video that attracted about 1.3 million views and 27,000 likes online. Ms Jennings said such footage had helped raise awareness and funds, which went directly towards more treatment and research. “A couple of years ago, we had a video of a joey called Mason playfighting – it only went for 12 seconds before he rolled away and headbutted a nearby tree, but it went worldwide,” she said. “From that, we knew how far it could reach and that we could get much-needed money from these videos. “So, koalas have their own agent really, which I find quite funny. “Everybody knows that numbers are declining, so we think it’s more important than

Focus on awesome projects Ever thought of a great idea but not been able to bankroll it? A new chapter of the Awesome Foundation has started in Lake Macquarie to fuel creative minds and back beneficial projects. After launching in 2009, the foundation’s chapters across the globe, which include Newcastle,

Sydney and Melbourne, have given away more than $3 million. One of the newest chapters, Awesome Lake Mac, has now announced its first winner during a pitch at Canon, Warners Bay. Hunter-based entrepreneur Chad Ramage, who created a project called Accessibility in the City in

2016, received the grant to develop his user-friendly online mapping platform. It provides accessible features within cities, shopping precincts, universities and the like for people who find it hard to navigate busy, cluttered and visually-oriented environments. The data aims to offer urban planners and governments vital insights into mobility challenges that can aid the creation of a true smart, resilient and liveable city for all. Awesome Lake Mac co-facilitator, Emilie Wiggers, said the initiative wanted to help projects that could benefit the Hunter community. “We’ve based this on the Awesome Foundation model, which is a global network of volunteers trying no-strings-attached funding structures,” she said. “Our chapter is made up of local Lake Macquarie residents donating their own time and money. “The projects just need to be

community-oriented.” Ms Wiggers said the Lake Mac chapter also had a youth focus, with three grants available specificially for young people aged 16-24. She added Mr Ramage’s project was an example of how great ideas simply needed a helping hand. “Chad’s web-based platform looks at things such as where accessible parks are located and if there are lifts and stairs,” she said. “A lot of people have good ideas, but it can be hard to get grants to support them. “With this, they can fill out a few simple questions online for the opportunity each month and the board is really supportive.” Awesome Lake Mac’s board members will get together on a monthly basis to listen to pitches and each contribute $100 towards the grant. Newcastle’s first fenced dog park will be built in North Lambton as part of a 10-year plan to cater for more than 44,000 registered canines in the city’s local government area. The 1.5-hectare fenced playground at Acacia Avenue reserve, where owners will legally be allowed to let their dogs roam free, is the first of several possible sites earmarked under the Dogs in Open Space Plan. The plan was adopted by Newcastle council last week. A long-time supporter of fenced dog parks in Newcastle, Merewether’s Jane Garrick, owns a five-year-old Ridgeback-Kelpie cross called Evee. “We take her to Speers Point where there’s a fenced park and this works really well for her,” Ms Garrick said. “I’ll definitely take the trip to Lambton for future visits, but ideally I’d still love something a bit closer where I can walk her to and from home.” If successful, the council will also explore other possible sites at Lambton Park, O’Connell Reserve, Carrington Foreshore, Maryland Drive Reserve, and Stevenson Park.

Hunter Local Land Services (HLLS) has urged people to keep an eye out for cane toads after numerous sightings in the region. One confirmed toad, found in Lake Macquarie this week, is believed to have hitched a ride in sugar cane mulch designed for use on local gardens. Cane toads can hurt humans and kill domestic pets, such as dogs and cats, while they are also poisonous to many native species. Residents in Eleebana, Warners Bay, Mount Hutton and Swansea, particularly, are asked to watch out for them. “[They] are not endemic in our region, they are an invasive pest and could have devastating impacts on our local environment if they became established here,” HLLS acting general manager, Andrew Hodgson, said. Unlike native frogs, adult cane toads all have distinct bony ridges above the eyes; a large paratoid gland behind each eye; unwebbed hands; dry, warty skin; and can range in colour. Lake Macquarie Independent MP Greg Piper has started a petition to reopen Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre. The popular facility, near Wangi Wangi, had served the community since 1944 but was closed by the NSW Office of Sport on Friday, reportedly due to concerns that an ash dam wall at Eraring Power Station could pose a risk in the event of a 5.9-magnitude earthquake. Mr Piper said he was angered by the decision. “[It] has been made without any public consultation and it would appear that it’s been designed to blindside staff, myself, and the broader community,” he said. Mr Piper added he met with the ash dam site’s owners, Origin Energy, six months ago and was told a risk analysis review was being undertaken as a precaution. However, he claimed the centre was then closed down almost overnight. “Are we going to start closing down every other building or community facility that might be at risk from a 5.9-magnitude earthquake?” he asked. The petition also calls for better protection of the centre and other public assets nearby.

Athletes rewarded for skill, hard work at presentation Nine Athletes With a Disability (AWD) from Lake Macquarie were recognised at a presentation at Hunter Sports Centre on Saturday. Each athlete, representing Macquarie Hunter Athletics Club, received a trophy and a gift voucher for their performance. Coach Rachael Keyes praised the competitors for their dedication and perseverance. “You are serious track and field competitors and trained for the whole season,” she said. “You are an inspiration to all of us and we are very proud of you.” The nine athletes were: Caleb Black, Nicholas Goodwin, Jamie Lewis-Hughes, Bryce Lloyd, Megan Nay, Elizabeth Purkiss, Caleb Smith, Jessica Thomas, Makenzie Wilson. Cook pasta in a large pan of salted, boiling water until al dente. Drain well. Meanwhile, heat oil in a medium pan or medium-high heat. Cook onion and garlic for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add beef and cook until browned, breaking up lumps with a spoon. Add sweet potato and zucchini. Cook for 2 minutes until softened slightly. Add paste, tomatoes, stock and thyme. Simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes until thickened slightly. Stir through spinach leaves until wilted. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 220C/200C fan-forced. Combine pasta and beef mixture in an 8-cup capacity ovenproof dish. Sprinkle with ricotta, parmesan and pine nuts. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden.

50g blanched green peas

500g sweet potato

50g finely diced white onion

125g ricotta cheese

2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed

50g parmesan cheese

100g peeled asparagus, woody part of stem removed

10g salt 1 tsp ground nutmeg 150g ‘oo’ pasta flour (more for dusting)

50g shelled broad beans 50g sugar snap peas 50g spinach

For the gnocchi: spike the unpeeled sweet potato a few times and bake in the oven at 170°c for 45 mins-1 hour or until the potato is soft.

50g picked mint leaves, plus a few extra for garnish 100ml vegetable stock 1 lemon juice plus zest reserved for garnish

Scoop the flesh of the sweet potato into a mixing bowl. Discard the skin. Mix the ricotta, parmesan, nutmeg and salt until well combined and almost completely smooth. Add the flour ½ cup at a time, kneading very gently after each addition (don’t overknead it – you don’t want it to get tough).

Eventually, as the dough becomes easier to handle, transfer it to a clean, floured surface and form it into a loaf around 25cm x 8cm. Slice a thin slice off the loaf and roll and stretch the slice on a floured surface until it forms a long, skinny rope-like shape. Cut the rope into 1-inch segments and transfer to a bowl: this is your gnocchi. For a professional look, you can press the top of each gnocchi with the back of a fork. Bring a large pot of salted water to

boil, add the gnocchi and simmer until the gnocchi rises to the top. Drain and toss gently with a little olive oil to prevent sticking. At this point, you can make the sauce. Warm a large, flat-bottom frying pan gently then add 2tsp of olive oil. Gently sweat the onions and garlic until soft. Add the asparagus, broad beans, peas and a pinch of salt, and continue to cook for 1-2 mins. Add the sugar snap peas and spinach, followed by the vegetable stock and lemon. Add your cooked gnocchi back to the pan before whisking in the butter and remaining olive oil to thicken the sauce. Finish by adding the picked mint leaves and season to taste. Divide between the serving dishes. Serve with more picked mint leaves, lemon zest, crumbled Persian feta and grated parmesan or hard ricotta cheese.

Bound in book magic Will books go the way of video rental stores? Not if Rutherford woman Sue Scraggs can help it. Sue believes in the tangibility of the printed word and the distinct smell of well-thumbed pages. She’s read hundreds, if not thousands, of books over the years, often staying up until two, three or four in the morning, because she “couldn’t put the bloody thing down”. It’s been a 50-year love affair, starting with her first job as a table hand, at the age of 15, with the nowdefunct Newey & Beath Printers in Broadmeadow. Back then, they did all the page collating, perforating and embossing by hand. “They’ve got machines to do all that now,” Sue told Newcastle Weekly wistfully. Sue worked at numerous other printing companies around Australia, moving from job to job

whenever her husband was posted to a new location with the army. They eventually settled in Rutherford, where Sue has operated her “cottage industry”, Sue’s Book Binding & Repairs, for the past seven years. It’s not enough to pay the bills, but it keeps the rare trade humming, and what’s more, she often works with community organisations, such as historical societies and churches, free of charge. Generations-old bibles, dictionaries and storybooks are among the most common types of books needing repair, particularly those with inscriptions and sentimental value. “I’m often asked if I read the bibles – no, I just fi x them,” Sue quipped. In five decades, Sue has only turned away one book for repairs (ironically, a bible), as a combination of an obscene amount of sticky tape

and rice paper-thin pages made it unsalvageable. Usually, she will cut the book out of its cover; insert new end pages and ribbon; reinforce the back with calico; re-cover it, if the book’s original cover can’t be saved; and emboss it with gold lettering. Sue admitted that her customers were mostly elderly, as they were the ones who held the printed word dearest. “Some of these books have been in people’s families for generations

and they want to preserve them to pass on,” she said. “Or they don’t want family to discover them in their current condition after they’re gone and throw them out. “Kindles are so popular these days and the younger generations are all about buying new; I don’t think they even realise you can get [books] fixed.” Sue can be reached on 4932 6390 or 0409 326 392. - Georgia Osland

Writers to descend on city Clementine Ford, Trent Dalton, Rosalie Ham, Chloe Hooper and Michael Robotham are among 130 writers to feature in the Newcastle Writers Festival this weekend. This year’s program, staged at various locations in the Civic Precinct from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 April, includes some of Australia’s most respected fiction and non-fiction writers, comedians, Aboriginal activists and mental health advocates, feminist commentators, academics and best-selling authors. The event is inspired by the key theme: ‘Discover the stories behind the stories’. Founding director Rosemarie Milsom said she was influenced by comedian Hannah Gadsby’s “groundbreaking” 2018 stand-up performance Nanette. “Gadsby said that stories hold our cure and I believe that to be true,” Milsom said. “When we ignore the stories of others, it’s easier to turn away from empathy. The power of Hannah Gadsby’s story is her resilience and that also happens to be a strong theme in this year’s program.” This year, festival-goers will also notice the event has been rebranded. “It’s not just me who was looking a little tired,”

Milsom joked. “We were after a bold new image that conveys our purpose, which is to encourage people to look beyond the surface and step out of the social media echo chamber. “Reading is key to this.” There are plenty of activities to get involved in, from a fundraising trivia night and writing workshops to panel discussions, readings, one-onone interviews and tours of Newcastle City Library’s archives. Duffin despaired that she would have to find a new location for the gallery, when two visitors offered her the opportunity to move into the commercial space they had bought across the road. “It was a ‘pinch yourself’ moment,” Duffin said. She eagerly signed a lease and couldn’t wait to have access to running water, power and air conditioning! Finite Gallery was only ever supposed to be just that – finite. Six years ago, artist Leslie Duffin set up shop in a derelict petrol station at Caves Beach to offer art classes and, potentially, a gallery. In the early years, the gallery relied on extension leads and buckets of water. All the windows were boarded up. It was idyllic in fine weather but faced challenges in the colder months. Despite the difficulties, Finite Gallery became a regular stop for locals and visitors to the seaside hamlet. The Kiss My Arts fundraisers for MS Australia were well supported, as were the workshops and classes for both

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH HUNTER REGION COORDINATOR

There is nothing Bill Hackney loves more than spending time with his family and helping the community. Born in Newcastle, Bill is the youngest in a family of five girls and two boys. He spent most of his youth at the family business, Nature Wonderland animal park, which was formerly based in East Maitland. He has been heavily involved within the Lower Hunter community over the years, winning Maitland Citizen of the Year in 2015 and serving on the board of East Maitland Junior Rugby League as vice-president. However, it was the Neighbourhood Watch where Bill found his true calling. After setting up a group at Metford, he went on to receive numerous awards, including NSW Police Neighbourhood Watch Volunteer of the Year 2017, while he was a finalist in the Australasian Volunteer of the Year 2016. He currently serves as the Neighbourhood Watch Hunter Region area coordinator and as president of Neighbourhood Watch NSW. Bill and his wife, Narelle, have two children: Rebecah, 20, and Hayden, 15. 70

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH I have found a calling within Neighbourhood Watch as I had started a little group in Metford to head up the Hunter Region. NSW Police asked me to sit on the NHW advisory committee at police headquarters, and to be a regular speaker at NHW conferences in Sydney and Canberra. Now, with my sights on the relaunch of the state body of Neighbourhood Watch in NSW, there are exciting times ahead.

DOWNTIME For relaxation, there is nothing better than hitting the bitumen on my postie bike, whether it is on a charity run or cruising with the guys in Hunter Valley Posties. I also love hitting the local waterways for a spot of fishing or water sports.

EAST MAITLAND GRIFFINS I’m the current vice president of East Maitland Junior Rugby League. There is nothing more rewarding than supporting children’s sport.
