This week... From the editor Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day. – A. A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh). There is a lesson in this for all of us (and lessons in patience are hardest learned). The ability to have faith that, come what may, everything will work out exactly as it should is a powerful tool. Patience is a virtue, and so on. Why, then, is it so hard? I have a theory. In a world of instant gratification, we’ve grown so accustomed to moving at breakneck speed, achieving one thing before hurtling towards the next, that our patience has worn thin. We’ve forgotten how to take it slow and trust in the universe; how to be the river. It takes a conscious effort to be patient in everyday life. Think about the time you chose not to let another driver in front of you, or hastily pushed past a slow pedestrian – we’ve all done it, rushing to get somewhere we should already be. Did we reach our destination any quicker? Maybe by a few minutes. Ahh, but the patient people among us know that this does not make them late, nor early, but right on time. - Georgia Osland

Self-confessed ‘selfish’ Tiger Moth pilot Phil Unicomb will take to the skies once again for Hunter Valley Steamfest’s Great Train Race, a role he has filled too many times to count. This weekend’s celebration of steam machinery and heritage trains is now in its 33rd year, which is almost as many years as Mr Unicomb has been participating in the festival’s highlight – a race from Newcastle to Maitland between the Tiger Moth plane and two steam locomotives. He admits that he covets the pilot job, but it’s only because he loves it. “I’m a real steamhead,”he said. “I tend to be a bit selfish and hog it myself.” This year, Mr Unicomb will be taking on the 3526 and the 3265 on Sunday morning, but punters will no doubt just be keen to see the plane get in the sky – strong winds kept the Tiger Moth firmly on the ground in 2018. “We had a roaring westerly [last year],” he said. “If we get a moderate westerly, the locomotives will have an advantage because I’m pushing into the wind.”
Another person hoping the wind stays at bay is Maitland council’s events team leader Portia Wendt. “We couldn’t have that twice running,” she said. “The weather is one thing that we can’t control, so fingers crossed it’s a beautiful weekend.” More than 50,000 people are expected to visit Maitland for the festival on 13 and 14 April, a number that tends to remain steady year-on-year. “It’s really stood the test of time,” Ms Wendt said. “Grandparents are passing it on to their grandchildren now and it’s a really family-friendly event. “People are coming from around the state and interstate, it’s well-regarded and well-known outside the region.” As always, the rally ground will feature displays by the Maitland Steam and Antique Machinery Association, mini railways rides and a dedicated kids’ area. On Sunday, Maitland Park will be taken over by more than 400 classic cars and hot rods for a Show ‘n’ Shine. - Melissah Comber

Leaders brave cold for homeless St Vincent de Paul Society’s Matthew Talbot Homeless Service saw 701 people who struggled with secure housing in the 2017/18 financial year. With three months to go in this financial year, they have already seen 729. It’s a concerning rise and it makes the funds that will be raised in support of the service at this year’s Newcastle CEO Sleepout even more needed. To be held at McDonald Jones Stadium on 20 June, the sleepout will see local business leaders don their winter woolies and bed down in a sleeping bag in the hopes of raising more than $150,000 for the homeless service. Last year’s event brought in $153,000, which funded an additional case worker and a private property officer. Case workers assist with not only securing accommodation but supporting clients with more complex needs, such as physical and mental health issues. Property officers focus on finding private properties for clients to move in to. “The challenge with homelessness is always the ‘moving on’ accommodation,” Maitland/ Newcastle Vinnies special works manager Belinda
EN P O W O N MES O H Y A L P DIS
McDaid explained. “We have temporary accommodation and that is for three months, but it’s about the moving on and moving on is about getting an affordable rental. “Rental in Newcastle has been really challenged in terms of the cost and increases over the year.” The service places a focus on homeless men, a demographic that Ms McDaid said had not typically sought assistance in the past. “Men by nature don’t seek out help, and that goes for men with children as well,” she said. “Sometimes we have to be a lot more proactive engaging men to come forward [but] the more you publicise something, the more comfortable people are to come.” Taking up the sleepout challenge is the Australian Taxation Office’s Robyn Kelly, who will be participating for the first time. “I’m a runner, so I tend to run for things, but I thought ‘sleeping? I’ll give that a go!’,” she said. “It’s one night, and for some people in our country, sadly, this is their reality 365 nights a year.” - Melissah Comber

EXPANDING WITH PASSION When The Oak Tree Group was founded just over a decade ago, the motivation behind the brand was never to be the biggest, but the best in the field of independent senior living. The Group was set up with a mandate to provide quality and affordable retirement living options which would offer an easier, maintenance free way of life for seniors but still remain within the financial reach of the average Australian home owner. Realising a unique and under-supplied opportunity in regional locations, the Oak Tree Group made this their focus, and charged forward on what they describe as being a busy, but deeply gratifying journey. Starting out with just the one Village in Brisbane’s western suburbs, the Group has grown their village portfolio to include 28 villages throughout Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales “We are passionate about, and intrinsically linked to, regional towns and their people – I grew up in Armidale and my business partner’s family are originally from Ingham,” said Founding and Managing Director of The Oak Tree Group Mark Bindon. Oak Tree Villages offer modern and purpose-built homes designed to help seniors age-in-place and live independently well into their retirement years.
“When first considering retirement living, many may misconstrue it as a nursing home which is very far from the actual truth,” said Mr Bindon. “With like-minded friends and neighbours nearby, our residents always have companionship and an on-tap support network which they can grow to trust and rely on as their needs and circumstances change – be it a health issue, loss of a partner or if they feel isolated from their families. “There is always someone up for a chat and a cuppa and residents can be as private or as social as they wish.” Residents have easy access to a variety of facilities right on their doorstep - including a village centre, complete with hair dressing salon, lounge and media room, kitchen for functions, library and computer room and breakout activity zones. “We have built our reputation around being personable, approachable yet professional and focus our energies on the end product – our Villages and our residents’ comfort and happiness.”

news Cash splash in rural towns A road trip has invested more than $26,000 into rural towns affected by the ongoing drought. We Care Road Trip organiser Anne-Marie Best said a busload of shoppers departed Newcastle to spend cash in Murrurundi, Narrabri, Moree and Manilla as a show of support. She added it had been an eyeopening experience. “As we got to Murrurundi it was starting to dry out,” she said. “A lot of people were shocked when we got to Moree and then, as we went through Warialda and down to Manilla, the paddocks were empty, there was no stock, and no weeds either – it was just dust. “In Narrabri, a [farming] couple told us that it was the first time in 51 years that they’d had no cattle, they had totally destocked.”

%
The trip managed to raise $10,585 through seat sales and donations, as well as a raffle and auction. These funds were handed over to the Moree Country Women’s Association (CWA) for distribution. A further $892 was injected into Murrurundi, $1,697 in Narrabri, $12,683 amid an overnight stay in Moree, and $966 in Manilla. Ms Best said that the Moree community was particularly grateful for the much-needed economic boost. The town’s mayor, Katrina Humphries, CWA representatives and business leaders all attended a special meet-and-greet event during the trip. “The drought has dropped off the radar in the media a bit,” Ms Best said. “It’s not over when it rains – the moisture in the sub-soil has to build up and they don’t want too much

rain too soon. “It is a hard life out there, but we had some amazing feedback and people [on the trip] got a lot out of it.” The road trip followed an inaugural event last September, which had a total financial impact of almost $28,000 and included
stops at Merriwa, Coonabarabran, Gulargambone, and Willowtree. Ms Best said she hoped to organise a third road trip later this year. She reserved special praise for major sponsors, Grace Coaches, for its donation of a bus, driver and fuel. - Ben Murphy

news Peace prize winner targets nuclear ban Nobel Peace Prize winner Gem Romuld says Australia must “get on the right side of history” and sign a treaty that will ban nuclear weapons. The Australian Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) spoke about the organisation’s goals towards world peace during a special event at NeW Space. In 2017, an overwhelming majority of the world’s nations adopted a landmark global agreement to ban nuclear weapons after a decade of advocacy by ICAN and its partners. This ban prohibits nations from developing, testing, producing, manufacturing, transferring, possessing, stockpiling, using or threatening to use, or allowing nuclear weapons to be stationed on their territory. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will enter into legal force once 50 nations have signed and ratified it. Ms Romuld says ICAN is “well on track” to achieve this target in the next two years, with 70 signatories and 22 states parties to date. She describes the 2017 Nobel Prize for Peace, awarded to ICAN for its work on the treaty, as a
huge honour. However, she believes Australia is standing in the way of progress. “It’s an important step for Australia to sign and ratify that treaty and get on the right side of history,” she tells Newcastle Weekly. “The [current government] claims there is a role for nuclear weapons in our defence policy, which is outlawed by the treaty. “There is no acceptable use of nuclear weapons and no-one has guaranteed that they won’t be used, either by accident or on purpose.” While Ms Romuld is solely focused on changing Australia’s policy, she labels two of the biggest offenders, Russia and the United States, as “hypocritical” on nuclear weapons. According to the Federation of American Scientists, nine countries possess about 15,000 nuclear weapons. Russia and the United States account for about 92% of these and maintain roughly 1,800 weapons on high-alert status. “They both have the capacity to destroy the planet many times over,” Ms Romuld says.
Australian Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Gem Romuld, at NeW Space with the Nobel Peace Prize. Photo: Peter Stoop
“How can you call on other countries to disarm and not acquire nuclear weapons when you yourself are threatening to use [them]?” Ms Romuld says, ultimately, ICAN is a story about how it has been able to shift the debate around nuclear weapons from one of theoretical nuclear strategy to instead focus on people, cities and the environment. “That was key to reframing the issue – that it was humanitarian,” she says. - Ben Murphy

news Free clinic to bust bullies Confidence and resilience – they’re two characteristics that build strong young adults. Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre will provide free Easter workshops to give children that kickstart. The popular Bully Buster clinics have taken place for several years, teaching basic self-defence skills to three-to-10-year-olds. The clinics wrap up with a fun Easter Egg hunt through an obstacle course. “We teach five strategies on how to deal with bullying to make it about them standing strong for themselves and being able to use their voices, as well as practical self-defense,” Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre’s head instructor, Kelie Fisher, said. “It’s also about character development, so they know who
they are and how to be assertive.” Chief instructor, Brian Hayes, said the centre taught the S.T.E.P approach – stop, think, evaluate and proceed – as a way of making appropriate decisions. “To bully-proof our children we must find a way to build antifragility, as well as resilience,” he said. “These qualities are hard to come by in the modern world where our children don’t always have the opportunity to play vigorously, learn to fall down and recover, take a knock and not overreact, and to get on with it. “Bullying is a terrible thing, and no-one deserves it, so we teach our children to collect themselves, consider their options and then to proceed with the best and most appropriate strategy.” The Bully Buster clinics will take

place at the centre’s five locations – Warners Bay, Waratah, Green Hills, Redhead and Morisset – on Wednesday 17 April. Each clinic will feature a special presentation from emergency or
community services, including NSW Police, the Rural Fire Service, and a mental health support dog. Visit huntermartialarts.com.au for more information or to book a clinic.

Do cholesterol medications cause you side effects? Trash rack vanes directing waste into a containment cell.
Device takes out the trash A new trash rack in Lake Macquarie is trapping plastic bottles and bags, aluminium cans and other waste before it hits the city’s waterways. The device – one of the largest in Australia – has been installed on Winding Creek at Glendale. Lake Macquarie council stated it was one of several Stormwater Quality Improvement Devices (SQUIDS) installed throughout the city. Environmental assessment and compliance officer Jason Parsons
said the device used speciallydesigned ‘vanes’ to divert debris into a containment cell, while not affecting water flow. “The former trash rack was 25-years-old and didn’t effectively capture gross pollutants or sediment,” Mr Parsons said. The Winding Creek catchment includes the suburbs of Glendale, Macquarie Hills, Cardiff South, Cardiff, Cardiff Heights and Hillsborough. Water drains into Winding Creek and eventually flows into Lake Macquarie.
Pendlebury Research is conducting a clinical trial to test the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication that may help to reduce cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease. You may be eligible if cholesterol medications cause you side effects. To qualify you must: be at least 18 years of age be statin intolerant (you have had side effects from at least one cholesterol medication) meet additional study criteria. Participants will receive all study medication and study-related care from a dedicated team of medical staff at no cost. You will need to attend appointments at our Kotara clinic and you will receive compensation for travel expenses.

news Budget drives dollars to region’s roads The Hunter’s road network has emerged as a major winner in last week’s Federal budget, with $1.6 billion committed to a big-ticket item – the M1 Pacific Motorway extension. The project, which will connect the M1 at Black Hill to the Pacific Highway at Raymond Terrace, has been costed at $2 billion and requires a $400 million injection from the state government. More than $4 million of state money was allocated to planning in the 2018-19 NSW budget, and $200 million has been committed under the Restart NSW program. Fifteen kilometres of dual carriageway is proposed for the extension. It will create a bypass of Hexham and Heatherbrae and interchanges at Black Hill, Tarro, Tomago and Raymond Terrace. Hunter Business Chamber chief
executive, Bob Hawes, welcomed the funding commitment, adding it could be the catalyst for upgrades to the surrounding road network. “Confirmation of funding for the M1 extension will hopefully strengthen the case for expediting the upgrade of the Tomago Road/ Cabbage Tree Road link from Hexham to Williamtown to dual carriageway, and any necessary upgrades to the link from the end of the inner-city bypass at Sandgate to the M1,” he said. “Improved access to Newcastle Airport and the Port of Newcastle is imperative to realising the region’s potential as a global gateway for NSW. “Upgrading of link roads to these assets will support their growth, boost tourism and trade opportunities and improve connectivity and safety.”
Around the region, $20 million was announced for an unidentified project on The Bucketts Way, and another $20 million will be spent on Clarence Town Road. Apart from roads, a centrepiece of the budget was $158 billion in income tax cuts over a decade, which, initially, would see people who earn up to $126,000 get $1,080 back at tax time. A one-off energy assistance policy was also announced to help 3.9 million Australians pay their power bills. Singles are set to receive $75, and couples $125, before July. Recipients of the age pension, carer and single parent payments, disability support pension, war widows and veterans’ were all part of the list. The Newstart unemployment benefit was initially not included.
However, the government delivered a post-budget backflip and agreed to extend the energy assistance policy. Despite this, the weekly income support for those on Newstart and Youth Allowance did not rise for the 25th straight budget. Mission Australia’s chief executive, James Toomey, said the federal government’s commitment to welfare reform had stalled. “The [government] has ignored growing inadequacies in income support for those receiving Newstart and Youth Allowance, which is leaving people to survive on as little as $278 a week,” he said. “As it stands, the current rates of Newstart and Youth Allowance don’t even remotely cover the cost of life’s basic essentials.” The budget was announced ahead of May’s federal election.

Benhome sold to Freemasons One of the Hunter’s most iconic aged care facilities has been sold in a multi-million-dollar deal. Maitland Benevolent Society chairman, Bob Geoghegan, announced the sale of Benhome last week to the Royal Freemasons’ Benevolent Institution (RFBI). Mr Geoghegan said the society actively looked for a suitable purchaser for months to provide a more extensive offering to the community in and around Maitland. He added seven not-for-profit aged care providers were considered as part of the process. “This is great news for our residents and their families, our staff and the wider community,” Mr Geoghegan said. He believed the RFBI deal would safeguard Benhome’s future. The facility was sanctioned last September after it failed to meet 14 of 44 Department of Health standards. However, it had ticked all the boxes by midDecember. Benhome chief executive John Cleary said the RFBI’s reputation and plan to spend money on
refurbishments were major factors in the sale. “The plan for spending [about] $10 million on the facility is a big thing,” he said. “[RFBI] is a really reputable not-for-profit group themselves and they’re almost the same age as us. “We’re 152-years-old and they are 139, so I believe we are [two of the] oldest charities in NSW.” Benhome offers residential, dementia, respite and home care services to more than 140 older people in Regent Street, near Maitland Hospital. The Maitland Benevolent Society insisted neither residents nor home care clients would be adversely affected by the sale. It added four staff members from the finance and management team would not continue into the new ownership model, but all other staff were set to retain their current positions. Three of the staff who are not moving across to the RFBI will remain with the Maitland Benevolent Society. The society, which was first established in 1867 when a group of compassionate community
Maitland Benevolent Society chief executive John Cleary and chairman Bob Geoghegan, second from right, with RFBI chair David Adams and chief executive Frank Price.
members bonded together to raise money for those in need, developed a primary focus on aged care in the 1970s. RFBI chairman David Adams believed the acquisition of Benhome represented a natural fit. “RFBI operates four other residential care villages in the Hunter Region, three retirement villages, as well as home care services,” he said. “This is a very positive outcome for Benhome residents, families, home care clients and staff and our team will be working closely with all parties to make the transition as smooth as possible.” - Ben Murphy

Lake Macquarie’s Youth Week celebrations will include a skate, scooter and bike competition at the Chip Bowl, Charlestown.
Youth Week hits the Hunter The 2019 NSW Youth Week is in full swing and there are a range of activities all over the Hunter for young people to get involved in. The action-packed festival, which officially wraps up on 18 April, celebrates the contribution young people make to their communities and showcases their talents. Charlestown’s popular Chip
Bowl will be home to a skate, scooter and bike competition this evening, 11 April, from 5pm. The free event is being presented by Eastlake Youth Centre and builds on the centre’s work to positively activate community spaces. Kurri Kurri Youthfest, marked down for 13 April, will be a highlight on the Cessnock calendar.
Set to take place at the skate park from 9am to 4pm, it will include live music, a scooter, bike and skate competition, street art workshops and face-painting. Newcastle Library will host Live @ the Library, and an after-hours all-ages gig on the same day. Tickets are $10 and can be booked through Newcastle council’s website. Up & Up will host the Snak N Rap event at Lemon Tree Passage’s Mallabula Skate Park on 17 April from 10am to 1pm. The free event provides a safe, welcoming and fun hangout space with music, food and conversation. The Sun Street Festival will return to Maitland from 4pm on 17 April, featuring two stages of performances, a photo booth and food. The Wakakulang Aboriginal Dance Group, Reamus Youth Theatre and Body Beyond Boot Camp will all be on deck. For a full Youth Week event guide, visit your local council’s website.
Memorial for Mr Maitland The life of ‘Mr Maitland’, Milton Morris AO, will be celebrated with a public memorial service on the weekend. Mr Morris passed away on 27 February aged 94. He was an iconic figure in Maitland, having served as the state MP for almost 25 years before spending another 30 years as chairman of the Hunter Valley Training Company. During his political career he spent 10 years as transport minister and was responsible for the introduction of compulsory seatbelt wearing, breathalysers and radar speed cameras. The memorial will be held at 10.30am on Saturday 13 April at St Peter’s Anglican Church, East Maitland.

news From page 25 The Northstars will start the 2019 season with a home double header later this month against the Sydney Bears and Melbourne Ice. Kennedy says that he plans to finish the campaign with a championship, but “so does every team until you get punched in the face”. The Northstars squad will be bolstered by the return of key players from last season, as well as late 2018 import Sammy Banga. The focus right now, Kennedy says, is making sure that the local players are ready. “[We want] to have them ready so the imports can fall in line with us,” he says. “We don’t rely solely on our imports to carry this team because, in that sense, the league has grown where you can’t do that to win a championship – it takes a
full team.” Despite this, he knows Banga’s return will be a big boost for the Northstars. The Canadian forward slotted 16 goals and provided 18 assists last season. “He’s a natural at putting the puck in the back of the net, so we’re very excited to have him back,” Kennedy says. “As good as he is on the ice, he’s an amazing character off the ice – a good guy to have in the locker room.” The Northstars will start the season against the Bears from 5pm on Saturday 27 April. The squad then backs up the next day to take on the Ice from 4pm. Tickets are available via the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on 4954 4499. Wests Leagues Balance 1’s Sophie Buckley and Souths Lions’ Kaitlyn Stansfield. Photo: Peter Stoop.
Player movement tightens title race Defending Newcastle netball premiers Wests Leagues Balance 1 are hoping this season brings a three-peat, but the road to the top won’t be smooth. The Greater Open Championship 2017 and 2018 champions suffered their first loss since mid-2017 on Saturday, going down to Forsythes Business Advisors by just two goals in a thrilling contest. The 35-33 scoreline has signalled a potential changing of the guard, with player movement across the league threatening the stronghold Wests and Souths Lions have held for the last several years. Wests have picked up former Australian junior Natarlia Manning and NSW junior Karli Ireland but lost Kimberly Goodearl to pregnancy and Kim Williams to Forsythes. “I think a lot of the teams have changed which is probably a good thing,” Wests Balance 1 captain Sophie Buckley said. “The top four from the bottom four [on the ladder] won’t be as big a jump this year.” Souths had an easier ride through round 1, comfortably accounting for 2018 semi-finalists
BNC Whanau 54-34. They have been defeated by Wests in the last two grand finals and have also added new players to the roster, but Lions player Kaitlyn Stansfield believes it only strengthens the team. “We’ve got a strong base there and we’ve pulled in some young girls,” she said. “That’s something we really want to do at Souths, bring up the young ones and get them playing well in [the] top division.” In other round 1 results, Junction Hotel Stella enjoyed a triumphant return to top flight competition with a 50-47 victory over Wests Leagues Balance 2, and Maryville Tavern Alize accounted for Nova Queens Wharf Thunder 48-40. With many Newcastle players competing at Netball NSW Premier and Metro League level, the association has introduced an Under 23s division this year to mirror the state pathway, while a mixed competition is now running on Monday nights. More than 3,500 players are registered in 373 teams for the 2019 season. - Melissah Comber

Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 25 minutes. Preheat the oven to 220ÂşC, Gas Mark 7. Stir the garlic and cornflour paste into the sauce until completely combined, then cook for another minute or two until thickened. Transfer half of the mixture to a bowl and set aside. Stir the chicken and beans into the remaining sauce in the pan. Spoon a few tablespoons of the chicken mixture into each tortilla, then roll them up and place seam-side down in a large baking dish (about 30 x 20cm deep). Top with the reserved sauce and scatter over the cheese. Bake for 20 minutes until the chicken and beans are heated through and the cheese is melted. Want even more veg? Add 80g sliced avocado and 80g side salad to each serving and you get a massive six portions.

HENG LOONG RESTAURANT
Place the onions, red peppers, tomatoes, measured water, stock cube, paprika and oregano in a saucepan.
2 chicken stock cubes 420ml boiling water 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 200g finely sliced onions 400g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained a few mint leaves, finely sliced a few curly parsley sprigs, finely chopped pepper To serve lemon wedges soy sauce
While the Tomacado Salsa is marinating, tip the couscous into a large, wide heatproof bowl or large saucepan, add the dried fruits, crumble in the stock cubes and mix well. Pour over the measured water and give it a quick, thorough stir, then cover with a plate or saucepan lid and set aside. Heat the olive oil in a medium frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the onions and fry for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, or until browned to your liking. Remove the cover from the couscous and fluff it up with a fork. Stir in the onions, the salsa (including its marinade), the chickpeas, chopped herbs and a few twists of pepper. Serve with the lemon wedges and a drizzle of soy sauce.

Rock royalty’s back in town The Screaming Jets will return to their origins in Newcastle for two special shows to kick off the band’s 30th anniversary celebration tour. With well over 100 original songs in their extensive rock catalogue, The Screaming Jets will go back to their roots and potentially uncover tunes they haven’t played for years. This will be sprinkled amongst all the hit songs like Better, Helping Hand, Shivers, October Grey, and C’mon. The band’s two Newcastle shows, which are part of the ‘Dirty Thirty’ tour, will take place at Wests Cardiff on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 May. Lead singer Dave Gleeson, who hails from Cardiff, says the city has always shown its support over the years. “Now it’s our opportunity to show our appreciation for that,” he says. “[I] can’t wait to bring this show back to where it all started.” In 2016, Triple M Sydney crowned Better, written by former member Grant Walmsley, as

the most played single by an Australian artist in its 37-year history. In the same year, the band’s seventh studio album, Chrome, was released, reinstating The Jets as a national treasure. Chrome won the coveted Hot Metal Online award for Best of Album and debuted in the national Top 40 ARIA Charts. In 2018, their Gotcha Covered Aussie covers
album, or love letter to Oz Rock, debuted at #1 on iTunes and their Top 20 ARIA chart debut was backed up by a sell-out national tour in August and September. Special guests The Poor will be at the two Newcastle shows to help The Jets celebrate their journey over three decades in the music business. Visit proticket.com.au to buy tickets.

Inaugural race goes off-road Some of the best runners in Australia will take in spectacular views of Newcastle as they weave in and out of the coastline and bushland. An inaugural trail run, The Coastal Ascent, will start and finish at Dixon Park on Sunday 28 April. It includes two distance options - 25 kilometres and 11kms– with runners to face two sets of 100 stairs, as well as 2.5kms of sand, single track running, and hill climbs and descents. Organiser Vlad Shatrov, a Novocastrian and ultra-trail running legend, says it has grown in popularity. “It’s really started to take off in the last few years – there are more events now and people are looking for a different kind of running challenge,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “People will do the same type of distance on the road in two hours, but it’s much more difficult [on the trails] due to things like uneven surfaces and hills and can take twice as long. “It is always in scenic locations as well – on the road it’s relatively safe and there is plenty of support. “But, with trail running, quite
often you don’t see someone for an hour. “So, the fear of doing that and then conquering it stays with people for longer.” Shatrov adds he is determined to produce a race in Newcastle that everyone can enjoy. Apart from the two main distances, there will also be a Kids Beach Bolt Mile, while DJ tunes, medals and a festive atmosphere are set to greet runners as they fly down Bathers Way on the final push home. The event has attracted about 600 entries so far, including the likes of 10,000 metres champion Ben St Lawrence and renowned trail runners Matt Abel and Dave Byrne. “I want this to be so much more than just another trail run – the aim is for it to be iconic, close to the city, and make people go: ‘Wow, I want to do that again,’” Shatrov says. The 25km distance will start at 7.30am, before the 11km takes off at 9am. The Kids Beach Bolt Mile wraps up the races at 11am. Visit coastalascent.com.au for more information. -Ben Murphy

Love your laundry No longer just a space for a washer and dryer, there’s a growing trend for functional laundries that are a workroom for busy families. Here’s what it takes to start loving your laundry.

Machine matters
Date: Purchaser Name:
As an essential part of the Australian household, washing machines can be one of the most important yet hardest appliances to shop for. European white goods brand, Beko, offers its top tips to help make your selection easier. Lifestyle: If you have a large family, opt for a washing machine that has a higher drum capacity. This indicates how much weight of the laundry load the machine can efficiently clean without excessive use of power or water. If energy efficiency is important to you, invest in a machine with a high Star Energy Rating. The ratings range from one to six, with six being the most efficient. Front vs top loader: Generally front loaders cost more than top loaders but tend to use less water and energy. Due to a front loaders’ efficiency, loads tend to have a longer wash cycle to optimise water and energy use, and spin cycles are generally louder.
Bright Home
Comparatively, top loaders have larger drum capacities and give you the bonus of being able to add clothes mid-wash. Top loaders tend to use more water and energy to run and can also be harsher on clothes due to the agitator in the centre of the drum which twists aggressively to remove dirt quickly. Space: If you have a small laundry space, front loaders tend to be more compact. Washer-dryer combos are also a great option. Be sure to measure the space you have available before purchasing and to account for the space the piping will take up behind your machine. Features: Consider what features you need to make your laundry task simpler and more efficient. Practical features and new technology can give you better results, more economical and quieter washing.

Consider planting Australian natives The warm weather continues! On the plus side, I have noticed the native birds and magpies inhabiting the large trees, eucalypts in the nearby reserve, then visiting my garden where I have grevilleas planted. Current garden designs generally exclude our Australian native plants, other than grasses. The reason for this exclusion is the demand for a minimalistic complement to modern design concepts, which is sad when I reflect on a very modern villa concept which I was fortunate to contribute to. It was one year only and the traditional planting of topiary trees and hedges are making it a
standout development. It is unfortunate that many gardens are fi lled with yuccas, cordylines and flaxes, restricting variety and the individualistic design. Don’t copy the other granosite houses in your neighbourhood, consider planting Australian natives. They can also complement modern architecture. For example, try Westringia fruiticosa shaped into perfect balls, the grey foliage and white flowers contrasted with a border of dwarf lomandras to highlight the street frontage. Screening plants are often in demand, homes are being

built closer and higher than one another –the answer to this is quick growing shrubs such as lillypillies. They are wonderful for screening and are also ideal for hedging as they grow quickly. One of my favourites is Cascade – I love the new pink flowers and clusters of baby pink berries. I have never had garden where I haven’t planted grevilleas. They grow quickly and encourage the birds and bees – there are so many choices. Try Honey Gem, Moonlight, Misty Pink and Sandra Gordon, all of which will constantly provide flowers for your home.

THIS WEEK • Lawns are still providing a challenge - if you have wiped out the army grub, crickets and black beetle, it is time to address the brown patches before the cold arrives. Keep applying Seasol to encourage growth from the remaining green grass onto the brown patches, which should be encouraged with a light application of lawn top dressing. • Grasshoppers are loving the extended warm weather - keep the infestation on the roses under control with pyrethrum. • Before planting pansies, primula and sweet peas, dig in poultry manure a week before planting.

PICK OF THE WEEK Moana Friday, GO!, 8.15pm, PG (2016) This mythic adventure is set in the South Pacific 2000 years ago. The heroine is Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho), a teenager who sets out on a daring mission to save her people when a crisis hits their island. Along the way she meets smug demigod Maui (a scene-stealing Dwayne Johnson), who learns a thing or two from his teenage protégé. Together, they sail across the ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
Raiders Of The Lost Ark Monday, NBN, 8.30pm, M (1981) The man with the hat made a rollicking debut here in this breakneck World War II-era adventure yarn from the minds of genius storytellers George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Harrison Ford (pictured) cemented a second iconic screen persona with his unflappable, whip-cracking archaeologist, ordered by the government to track down the lost ark of the covenant, which is being sought by the Nazis. With one of composer John Williams’ most memorable scores, Ark is the complete package.
Monday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2017) The first Guardians of the Galaxy skewered the superhero genre while embracing its best bits – the wisecracks, fight scenes and lovably flawed characters. Following up on the phenomenal success of the original movie, this sequel reunites the band of interstellar misfits as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt, pictured) true parentage. Returning in fine form are green-skinned Gamora (Zoe Saldana), talking raccoon Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and tree creature Groot (Vin Diesel).

This is an excellent time for laying down the foundations for future success in all areas. Saoirse will be attracted to those in high positions and with strong personalities. Whether in love or business she will find those who are born under the sign of Aries, Leo or Aquarius rather significant in her year ahead.
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
Right now finances will keep you on your toes, but if you give life your undivided attention during the day, you’ll make a great deal of progress. It is important that you try to switch off at night. Taking time out for adequate rest and relaxation will benefit you.
With Venus in Pisces, the areas of your chart representing longdistance travel, foreign affairs and higher education come into the spotlight. For those who are taking tests or examinations this month, you should do well as long as you don’t become overconfident or too cocky.
You might find yourself in a personal or business relationship where the other person is taking it far more seriously than you are. Oh dear! Something needs sorting out at this point. Be clear in your communications and let them know just what they mean to you.
Owing to Venus, the planet of love, in the highly romantic yet confusing and deceptive sign of Pisces, you’re likely to meet many new faces, some of whom may be interesting contacts whilst others can be turned into firm friends. Whether you choose to or not is entirely up to you.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
You are one of the zodiac’s supremos when it comes to the role of host/hostess. I would imagine that most of your friends are fighting for invitations to your dinner table for they know you will never let them down when it comes to the culinary arts.
Now Leo, if you’ve neglected a financial or official matter, such as taxation, you need to act before the authorities do. But if you can’t fight these bureaucrats then there’s not much hope for the rest of us, so do take the lead and blaze the trail.
A strong physical attraction with either someone new or from your past may produce something of a conflict if you happen to already have a partner in tow. What you do must be left to your own good conscience, because only you know what the true situation is.
This is an important time for relationships with loved ones. If you have been going through a rough patch with someone dear to you, this is the time for opening the lines of communications and getting back on track. Let them know what they mean to you.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
Venus, the planet of love, sextiles powerful Pluto, bringing forth heightened emotions and passions. It also squares retrograde Jupiter, indicating a need for both you and your partner to gain clarity and insights into how to better handle your financial affairs. Communication is key.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
Mars is in your opposite sign of Gemini and this could lead either to sexual frustration or perhaps you will discover that your energy is lacking when you need it most. There is a practical solution here; perhaps you just need to start taking better care of your health.
You’re likely to be confronted by a number of challenges to your authority, both at home and at work. You will have to employ every device to stay in control. In order to help you take heart, try to bear in mind that goals you recently set yourself will be achieved.
Powerful and controlling Mars squares Venus this month causing potential misunderstandings amongst the sexes. At the same time, it conjuncts Mercury making you rather flirty and this will need to be kept in check, especially if you are already in a committed relationship.

Match in style
Class of 84 Clothing creates matching boardshorts for dads and bubs. They have all your occasions covered. The Meat Pie designed shorts were hot sellers in the lead-up to Australia Day and their Eggsellent Easter shorts are almost sold out. You won’t find designs any cooler than Class of 84 Clothing’s. Quick-dry and made from four-way stretch material (which basically means they are super comfy). Head to the website, classof84clothing.com, to check out the latest styles.

NUTRITION Seafood, cheeses, fruits, nuts and salads are usually the first choices, but the wines of the Hunter are a delicious downfall I have little intention of curtailing in the near future.
My favourite things FITNESS I broke my first bone falling from a horse and recently snapped my fibula after a disastrous first attempt riding a mountain bike in clip pedals. I might stick to water sports—kayaking more specifically—with a life-jacket. I walk, work out on a wind trainer and lift weights most days.
NATURE I’d like to see our natural heritage preserved. Being amongst the trees is what inspires me, and this is often where I am happiest.
D. J. Blackmore AUTHOR
Coalfields author D. J. Blackmore has milked cows and made cheese, her quilting has featured in one of Australia’s premier magazines, and she knows how to pluck a chook and keep bees. She has fed her children from paddock to plate and lived the simple life of a bygone era for many years, and that is what makes her writing so unique. D. J. has published three novels to date, making her debut with Charter to Redemption in 2014 and then sequel Folly, set in a time when Newcastle takes its very first heartbeats as a penal colony. Recently released Central to Nowhere chases its heels as a contemporary rural romantic comedy, born during her brief spell in Central Queensland. The rural tale, set in Central NSW, can be ordered through Amazon and any bookstore. 70
HISTORY Did anyone mention old buildings? Think carefully before you send me an invitation to your historic home. I may not want to leave.
COOKING Although I don’t eat sugar and processed foods, on occasions when my children come to visit there are five - I love to get in the kitchen.
