This week... From the editor Easter has arrived, albeit later than usual, and it’s time to enjoy an extralong weekend (don’t you wish there were more of those!) What do you have planned for the break? A camping trip? A spot of DIY? Absolutely nothing? Those are all valid answers. Personally, I’ll be celebrating me and my partner’s eight-year anniversary, coupled with some family time and a few odd jobs around the house. No doubt we’ll be squeezing out the last bit of warmth as the weather usually turns after Anzac Day (next Thursday 25 April). With Easter and Anzac Day being so close this year, if you’re already thinking about which service you’ll attend, there’s a handy guide to some of the Hunter ceremonies in What’s On (p26). You can also read about the World War I German trench mortar the Boolaroo Speers Point RSL sub-Branch had restored for its dawn service on page 6. Back to Easter – although short and sweet, this week’s edition is jam-packed with goodies, including the chocolate and chestnut recipe on the cover (Taste, p23), Easter craft in Home (p28) and a PJs gift guide in The Look (p27). The Easter Bilby also makes an appearance in My Favourite Things (p46). - Georgia Osland

Restored war relic on show A unique war relic will be the centrepiece of an Anzac Day dawn service at Speers Point Park. The World War I German trench mortar underwent a makeover for the first time since the 1920s ahead of the Boolaroo Speers Point RSL
sub-Branch service on Thursday 25 April. Sub-Branch president, Lyle Dalton, said the mortar had deteriorated over the years. “It was badly rusted and received a protective coating that should
make it last another 30 years or even longer,” he said. “There were also rust holes where little kids could put their fingers in there and cut themselves, so that’s all been overcome now. “The trench mortar is something special – only a small number were manufactured and a lot were damaged or blown up. “Not many came back to Australia from what I understand.” The short-barrelled, low-velocity, high-trajectory weapon was designed to propel mortar bombs into opposition trenches. It could fire 50-kilogram and 97-kilogram shells at a rate of 20 rounds per minute over a maximum range of 970 metres. The trench mortar was captured by the 17th Infantry Battalion (5th Brigade, 2nd Australian division) in the Somme on 10 August 1918 and transported to Australia aboard the SS Booral in 1920, before eventually being assigned to Boolaroo.
Mr Dalton said it was a daily reminder of the sacrifices of our forefathers. “To look at that machine and that barrel – to see one of those firing within metres of each other, it must have been deadly for troops on both sides,” he said. “I think it’s a nice reminder of what the countries went through 100 years ago.” For the dawn service, a march will form up at the western carpark, near the boat ramp, at 5.30am and step off at 5.45am for a 6am service at the rotunda. Wreaths will be laid at the base of the plinth that supports the trench mortar, while a sausage sizzle is available to the public at the completion of the service. The sub-Branch will later host another service at Anzac Park in Teralba from 8am. • To find an Anzac Day service near you, turn to page 26. - Ben Murphy

news Newcastle mum rejoices over council’s plastics pledge Newcastle council has committed to phasing out single-use plastics from all councilmanaged activities and events by 2020. This includes plastic straws, water bottles, balloons, promotional material and plastic signage. The move complemented the council’s endorsement of the UN Environment Clean Seas campaign. Launched in February 2017, the campaign aims to engage governments, the general public and the private sector in the fight against marine plastic pollution. Australia joined the movement in October last year, setting ambitious targets, such as making 100% of packaging reusable, compostable or recyclable by 2025. But Newcastle was slow to catch on, with other city councils such as Brisbane and Hobart taking the lead. Nevertheless, the news that Newcastle had pledged to reduce its environmental impact was music to mother-of-two Mia McManus’ ears.
“I was so happy to hear the news, as previous correspondence with [Newcastle council] had not seemed successful,” she said. “However, I’m glad to know they have taken initiative.” Newcastle Weekly first spoke with Mrs McManus during Plastic Free July last year, after she had launched a petition lobbying the council to phase out single-use plastics. The petition garnered 1,520 signatures of her 10,000 goal, despite a prolific social media campaign via the Instagram page @one.less. plastic.straw “I’m unsure if my petition had an impact on [the council’s] decision,” she said. “Perhaps, over the past year, with the growing awareness of the plastic pollution crisis and the many Novocastrians who supported my petition, [the council] recognised that this is something that really needs to happen.” At the end of the day, Mrs McManus said she was happy with the result, no matter how it was achieved.
“I’m proud to live in such a beautiful coastal city that embraces changes to reduce plastic waste,” she said. “So many marine animals and birds die every year from ingesting plastic or being tangled in plastic, so we all need to be mindful of where our waste can end up. “One of my favourite things that has come from my quest, is how many children enthusiastically pick up plastic where they see it. “I especially love how my young daughter yells ‘Plastic!’ at the top of her lungs every time she spots some. “To me, that’s what this is all about: creating awareness about the consequences of plastic pollution and inspiring change in everyone, so that we can all make a difference.” Mrs McManus will continue to host beach clean-ups and, personally, strive to make an individual impact. Follow her Instagram page for more information about how you can get involved. - Georgia Osland

news A new name for a new start Like Rolex, Atwea will, in time, roll off the tongue – for people of the Hunter and Mid North Coast, at least. Similarly, the acronym doesn’t stand for anything, but it does represent growth for the newly-renamed Atwea College (formerly WEA Hunter and WEA Coast), both now and into the future. For two weeks now, the educational institution has been answering the phones as Atwea College, bolstered by its fresh direction. “Atwea College is a new name for a new start,” executive director Rowan Cox says. “For just over 105 years, WEA has been privileged to share a strong partnership with our community. “You can’t go anywhere without someone saying to you, ‘My mum, dad, uncle, aunt or I went to WEA’, to learn a language or course like lawn mower maintenance. This is a fundamental part of our legacy. “In 2019, we are so much more than that. We provide senior secondary and vocational education to thousands of people annually

across more than 6,000 square kilometres of NSW. We needed a new name to unlock our potential. “The new name takes people by surprise and it will take some time to get used to, but on the whole, everyone has embraced it.” Ms Cox adds Atwea College won’t lose sight of its origins and will continue to offer lifestyle and “learning for fun” courses, but new courses are being added all the time to meet the community’s needs. “Because we’re an independent non-profit community-based organisation, we’re not directed by state funding,” she says. “That means we have the flexibility to ask: ‘What is it that our community needs?’ and fill that gap.” For example, the college has expanded its creative arts programs in recent years. The new-and-improved Atwea College unifies the organisation’s seven campuses, almost 100 staff, thousands of students and hundreds of courses and programs across the region.

Improved diagnostic techniques which will fund work to analyse for lung cancer are one step closer, lab-grown tumours to see how they thanks to a $100,000 donation to develop from early in their lifecycle. local research from the Maitland “There’s currently no good Cancer Appeal Committee. diagnostic techniques for early lung Volunteers presented a cheque cancer,” Prof. Hansbro said. to the Hunter Medical Research “People get diagnosed when Institute’s Professor Phil Hansbro, they’re really at late stage, when 190401_CG_NWeekly_HALF_01.qxp_Newcastle Weekly 1/04/2019 3:41 PM Page 1

More than $1 million has been gifted to local research by the
Maitland Cancer Appeal Committee in the last 10 years, with this latest donation raised through its Rutherford op shop in just 12 months. In a touching dedication, the donation was made in the memory of long-term committee volunteers Valda Knox and Dorothy Blair who both passed away last year, aged 92 and 90. Committee founder Alice Bennis paid tribute to both women. “Each winter for the last 20 years, those ladies knitted between 200 and 400 pairs of socks, which has made pure profit for us,” Ms Bennis said. “You’ve got no idea the amount of work it takes to do those socks.” This year the Maitland Cancer Appeal Committee is celebrating its 35th birthday. - Melissah Comber

news Art fosters storytelling A fully-funded art program in the Hunter Region will encourage young people to share their stories on multiculturalism within a safe environment. Hunter Multicultural Communities (HMC) will deliver the Diversity Walls project, which is designed to advocate harmony, resilience and tolerance. A professional artist will host workshops with young people to focus on mural painting skills and discuss themes that relate to diversity. Participants can talk about the personal impact of racism, conflict or threats, as well as how they responded to it. Multicultural NSW chief executive, Joseph La Posta, attended the project’s official launch at Waratah last week. He said the organisation was
passionate about creating united communities. “We have 307 different ancestries, speak over 215 different languages and practice 146 different religions – we are the most diverse state on earth,” he said. “That’s something we should be incredibly proud of; we were the second state in the world to have legislation that championed the principle of multiculturalism, and we were the first in Australia.” Mr La Posta added Multicultural NSW aimed to give a voice to some of society’s most vulnerable people. “We want to create a really viable settlement option for refugees in regional NSW,” he said. “People from a refugee background can make a really, really meaningful impact within regional communities.” Mr La Posta praised the Diversity

Students dish up meals with heart
Council supports Anzac Day events
Students and refugees shared a meal together at Maryland Neighbourhood Centre as part of NSW Youth Week celebrations. Food rescue charity OzHarvest hosted a special cooking skills workshop last week to promote its Nutrition Education Sustenance Training (NEST) initiative. The program aims to teach young people, as well as those in need, to nurture themselves through healthier eating choices and food preparation. OzHarvest NEST coordinator, Lea Browning, said the initiative wanted to increase community connectedness. She added the workshop was a great way to educate young people on cooking skills while broadening their social awareness. “This is the second time we’ve run the intensive Youth Week NEST session, with the students involved always keen to prepare, cook, and provide the meals to our guests,” Ms Browning said. “The impact from this luncheon is it brings the community together [through] sharing a meal, socialisation, and companionship. “The students [also] learn life skills that they could
Newcastle council will provide a free park-and-ride service and $75,000 in sponsorship for the second-largest Anzac Day dawn service in Australia at Nobbys Beach. Buses will depart McDonald Jones Stadium for Queens Wharf at 3.30am on Thursday 25 April, just as light rail begins from Wickham, thanks to Newcastle Transport’s decision to start services earlier than normal. Newcastle lord mayor, Nuatali Nelmes said large numbers were expected once again for the 5am dawn service and 9am march. City of Newcastle RSL sub-Branch president, Ken Fayle, hoped Anzac spirit would remain into a second century – a year after the centenary commemorations ended. “I’m proud to say we’ve exceeded our wildest expectations since we relocated the dawn service from Civic Park to Nobbys in the year 2000,” he said.

OzHarvest’s NEST program is funded by the Greater Charitable Foundation.

The STS Young Endeavour during a previous voyage.
High seas await adventurer Mayfield’s Anna Gibson will, quite literally, learn the ropes when she steps aboard a ship for the first time. The 21-year-old University of Newcastle student has been awarded a $4,000 scholarship to represent the city on a 10-day sailing expedition. She will be joined by 26 other

young people, aged 16 to 23, for the Young Endeavour adventure. “I’ve had a quite a few good friends go on the Young Endeavour who’ve said it’s changed their life,” Miss Gibson said. “So, from hearing that, it’s always been something that I’ve wanted to do. “I’m very much looking forward
to meeting a whole lot of new people from different walks of life. “I think it’ll be interesting getting grouped together with other people and making friends, reading nautical charts and weather maps. “I’ve never sailed before, so it’ll be a big challenge.” Miss Gibson was selected in a competitive expression of interest process. She departed Sydney aboard the STS Young Endeavour on Monday and will arrive in Newcastle on Anzac Day. The Young Endeavour Scheme, founded in 1988, is an internationally-recognised youth development program. The British-built ship first sailed to Australia in 1986 with a crew of 12 young people as part of Australia’s Bicentenary. Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the council’s scholarship was a great opportunity to broaden horizons.
Library closes for makeover
Charlestown Library will be temporarily closed while it undergoes a makeover. The refurbishment is set to include new carpet, painting and other minor improvements. Lake Macquarie council’s manager of arts, culture and tourism, Jacqui Hemsley, said Charlestown Library was a popular facility, with more than 3,000 people visiting each week. “This refurbishment will help to brighten up the facility and give it a fresh facelift for our customers while we undertake a feasibility review of future improvements we can make to the management and service delivery of this facility,” she said. The library will be closed from Thursday 25 April until Monday 20 May. Visit library.lakemac.com.au for more information.
sport Carr strives for greatness Gateshead athlete Blake Carr is determined to be a role model for other people with autism spectrum disorder. “The way I see it is, I live in a town where there are a lot of sporting people and a lot of people look up to them as heroes in your Newcastle Knights and Newcastle Jets,” he says. “I’m sort of becoming a hero in my own right in a different sport and, if people see me as that, then I’ll gladly accept it.” Carr returned from the Australian National Championships at Sydney’s Olympic Park with three new personal bests (PBs). He stretched his record from 5.35m to 5.38m in the long jump, raced across the line in 12.54 seconds in the 100m sprint, clocked 25.73 seconds in the 200m, and managed fourth overall in the
discus with a best effort of 26.84m. Carr was particularly driven to perform well at the national championships after a difficult period in his personal life. His nan, whom he had lived with for most of his life and described as a “second mum”, sadly passed away from ovarian cancer before the event. “I’ve had to deal with losing my nan a couple of weeks ago and there was a lot of pressure going into the nationals, but my coach reassured me and said don’t go out there for PBs or medals, just do it for nan,” he says. “I felt, for the first time, the pressure coming off my shoulders because I wasn’t weighed down by expectation or anything. I think that was key.” Following his impressive results, Carr is now waiting to
Jets go down
Guerra injured
A 65th-minute Perth Glory goal delivered the Newcastle Jets their 12th loss for the season on Sunday, leaving just two more games to end the year on a high. Both teams had several chances at nib Stadium, however it was the Glory’s Ivan Franjic that found the back of the net to secure the home side’s position on top of the table with their 1-0 victory. Despite their chances of making the finals dashed, Newcastle will still be looking to finish with more wins on the board and will travel to Brisbane to take on the Roar this Saturday 20 April. Their last meeting, in January, resulted in 2-all draw, while the Jets took the spoils in December with a 2-0 win. Newcastle will face currently second-placed Sydney FC in the final match at home on Saturday 27 April. The match will kick off at 5.35pm.
Knights forward Aidan Guerra is facing a lengthy stint on the sideline, with a shocking Round 5 mishap leaving him with a dislocated and fractured ankle. The incident added insult to injury with Newcastle going down to Manly 26-18 in their fourth straight loss. Edrick Lee posted Newcastle’s first points before half-time and a Kalyn Ponga conversion kept Manly within reach to go into the break 18-6. An Aidan Guerra grounding put the Knights on the comeback trail in the 49th minute, but soon after a Daley Cherry-Evans penalty kick took the score to 20-12. Manly extended their lead to 14 points with an Addin Fonau-Blake try in the 62nd minute, however a Mitch Barnett try with a Ponga conversion brought the gap back to eight. The Knights will clash with the Gold Coast Titans this Sunday 21 April at Cbus Super Stadium.

hear if he has qualified for the Australian squad that will compete in the Oceania Championships in Townsville in June. However, he says financial difficulties may be a tough hurdle. Lake Macquarie Private Hospital assisted with his accommodation and travel costs for the nationals, but Carr says he is unsure how he will manage other event costs. “I don’t get funding from
Athletics Australia or anything, so the money comes from my end,” he says. “With nan passing away, I don’t know what my financial pressures are going to be with rent, bills and so forth. If I do get support from other people and outlets, it’s greatly appreciated.” Email blake.carr@hotmail.com if you’d like to make contact. - Ben Murphy

Chocolate overload It’s Easter time! Indulge a little.
Gluten-free chestnut & chocolate brownies Recipe courtesy Chestnuts Australia [chestnutsaustralia.com.au] Prep: 20 mins + chestnut prep time Cook: 25-30 mins Makes: 16 pieces 500g fresh chestnuts or 350g cooked and peeled chestnuts 200g good quality dark chocolate, broken into squares 200g unsalted butter, chopped 1 ¼ cups brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 4 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup gluten-free self-raising flour* 2 tbsp cocoa Pinch salt *Standard self-raising flour can be used for a non-gluten-free version.
To roast chestnuts Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fanforced). Cut a shallow cross into the flat side of each chestnut shell. Place prepared chestnuts onto a baking tray and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until the shells split open. Once cooked, remove chestnuts from the heat and wrap in a clean tea towel for 5 minutes. While chestnuts are still warm, quickly peel off the outer brown shell and remove the papery thin skin underneath. To cook the brownie Reduce oven to 180˚C or 160˚C fanforced. Grease and line a 16cm x 26cm x 2-3cm deep slab pan with baking paper, leaving a 2cm overhang on the sides of the pan.
Set aside 50g cooked and peeled chestnuts. Place remaining chestnuts into a food processor. Process until fine crumbs form (you’ll need 2 cups ground chestnuts). Set aside. Place chocolate and butter in a large, microwave safe bowl and microwave on high for 2 minutes, stirring with a metal spoon every minute until melted. Set aside to cool. Using a metal spoon, stir in sugar, vanilla and eggs into chocolate mixture until well combined. Sift over flour, cocoa and salt. Stir to combine. Gently fold through chestnuts. Pour into prepared pan. Chop reserved chestnuts and sprinkle over mixture. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a skewer inserted comes out with moist crumbs sticking. Cool completely in the pan. Cut into squares.

Dinosaurs take over Hunter wetlands Something prehistoric has been dug up at the Hunter Wetlands Centre. In an Australian-first, a toscale dig site, complete with a full dinosaur skeleton, has been
recreated as part of a special exhibition these school holidays. The Dinosaurs and More exhibition will be open to the public from 9.30am to 1.30pm each day until Saturday 27 April.
Volunteer Jess Jones says it will provide visitors with a rare experience. “Most of us won’t have the opportunity to see an in-situ dinosaur dig site; this really is the next best thing,” she says. Families can also discover Dino Dioramas during a walk around the wetlands. These pieces of art are filled with intrigue and information about the historical inhabitants. Kids of all ages can then get their hands on some dino craft in the Craftosaurus space or enjoy a game of Dino Hopscotch. Visitors may also take a selfguided tour of the wetlands, meet the resident reptiles and enjoy a special dinosaur-themed meal at the wetlands’ café. The exhibition is sponsored by Newcastle council. Volunteer Val Noake says it can be difficult to organise an affordable and family-friendly event without the council’s financial support. “All parents know the struggle of finding fun and inexpensive things to fill up the school holidays,” she says.
“We are excited to be able to provide a day of wonder to a family of four for under $25.” All profits from the exhibition will go towards maintaining the wetlands. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for kids. The exhibition will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Anzac Day. Visit wetlands.org.au/dinos for more information or to book online.
Show flushed with success The original off-Broadway and Las Vegas hit, Menopause the Musical, returns to Cessnock next month. Inspired by a hot flush and a bottle of wine, the show is a celebration of women who are on brink of, amid, or who have survived The Change. Menopause the Musical follows the story of four very different women who meet at a lingerie sale. It doesn’t take long for them to discover that, underneath it all, they have plenty in common – including memory loss, night sweats, hot flushes and much more. A sisterhood is formed between these diverse women as they realise that menopause is no longer ‘the silent passage,’ but a perfectly normal stage in every woman’s life. It helps, of course, that the roll call of symptoms — the binge eating, insomnia and ‘lost-in-space moments’, among others – are aired in song. 24
This side-splitting musical parody, set to classic tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s, will have you cheering and dancing in the aisles. Internationally, the show has toured Canada, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, United Kingdom, South Africa and South Korea. In fact, it’s the longest-running scripted musical in Las Vegas history. With a cast that includes seasoned theatre professionals Trish Dearness (Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Much Ado About Nothing), Elisa James (Barnum: The Circus Musical), Nicole Wheeler (Director of Training and Musical Director at Fame Theatre Company) and Shari Hall (West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Cabaret, Guys and Dolls), and Maureen Bowra and Samantha Paterson in the respective roles of Director/Choreographer and Musical Director, this production is not to be missed. Revolutionising punk music to fill that void. Nowadays, they achieve that sound with little more than an iPad. They still maintain a heavy lyrical focus, encouraging audiences to think with many twists and turns. “We’ve been called ‘the Paul Kellys of punk’ and ‘punk bush poets’,” Harris says. “We’re the only band to play at the Newcastle folk club and be invited back.” Harris’ band kicked off the launch event on Sunday, followed by Chiko Roll Models and Linear (formerly MOM). While local bands will feature prominently at future gigs, regional and touring bands will also be on the agenda. BISTRO on a very short novel, the script necessarily extends the story and its themes while shifting the main focus onto our human characters who are responsible for the main action. This realignment, however, takes the main push away from Dumbo himself, lessening the punch of the story’s overall moral. Interestingly, the seductive pull of a corporation and the individual’s moral culpability are explored, amusingly as if Disney themselves are re-writing their own narrative in the midst of their acquisition of contemporary pop-culture and remakes of their back catalogue. Like Ralph Breaks the Internet, some contemporary political references are on the nose. Verdict: A delightful production whose namesake will melt your heart. 4 stars. - Luke McWilliams

Newcastle’s latest live music concept involves food and – bear with us – punk rock. Launched last weekend at The Lass O’Gowrie Hotel in Wickham, Punk n Lunch is exactly as it sounds. The monthly event, to be held on the second Sunday of each month, combines food and high-energy music for three hours from 1pm to 4pm, occupying a weekend timeslot typically reserved for acoustic soloists and mainstream cover bands. The brainchild of EME
Productions, Punk n Lunch promises to revolutionise the way audiences view punk, according to p..s to EME frontman Darrell Harris. “People have got the wrong idea about punk,” Harris tells Newcastle Weekly. “When it started, the idea was for it to be fun, but then people thought you had to be a virtuoso to play. “Let’s just get back to the garage and have fun.” And that’s exactly what p..s to EME are all about. The band originally formed as a four-piece in 1980. After their drummer left, Harris says they had a “nanna nap went wrong” for about 30 years before they sprang back to life, still without a drummer. They would use a drum machine

Camellias in bloom Easter is this weekend, and it’s a perfect time to garden after decent rainfall. I have noticed the Sasanqua camellias beginning to bloom. These pretty autumn flowers continue to bloom for some time, making now a great time to plant. Camellia sasanquas, the fine-leaved form, are tall and hardy, flowering from March well into winter. Sasanquas prefer an acidic soil, which can be achieved by fertilising with cow manure when they finish flowering. During the hotter months, apply peat moss over the root surface. This variety of camellia can be grown in a pot or as a specimen in the garden. It makes a great hedge; it can be clipped and shaped, even espaliered along a fence and, best of all, it can be planted in a narrow bed along a driveway for privacy. Simply cut off any frontal growth, which encourages the plant to grow sideways and upwards, and feed regularly with cow manure.
IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
THIS WEEK • Easter is on our minds – sometimes chocolate isn’t the answer. Why not gift a colourful indoor plant instead? • Japonica camellias (the next to flower) will produce bigger and better blooms if disbudded – that is, the removal of excess buds, leaving two or three per cluster. • Roses could benefit from a handful of dolomite after the recent rain.

PICK OF THE WEEK Viceroy’s House
Thursday, WIN BOLD, 8.30pm, M (2010) This exceptional local drama is based on the true story of a group of Australian miners sent to the Western Front in 1916. Forced to leave his sweetheart and travel to the trenches in Europe, mining engineer Oliver Woodward (Love My Way’s Brendan Cowell, pictured) finds himself commanding a platoon of Aussie tunnellers, including Gyton Grantley, Steve Le Marquand and Anthony Hayes. The gung-ho group work on a secret network of tunnels, packing it with enough explosives to kill thousands of German troops.
Friday, SBS, 8.30pm, (2017) This biographical historical drama charts India’s transition into independence in the 1940s, with the dependable Hugh Bonneville portraying the last Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten, and Gillian Anderson (pictured) playing his wife, Lady Edwina. Director Gurinder Chadha ticks all the right boxes, highlighting the religious and cultural disparities of the partition. It looks extravagant, and Chadha manages to weave the personal into the political.

Beneath Hill 60
Friday, GO!, 6.30pm, PG (2009) The animation wizards at Pixar (Toy Story, Finding Nemo) soar to new heights with this enchanting tale about an old grump on a helium-powered adventure. To fulfil a long-held promise to his late wife to visit South America, grouchy 78-year-old Carl (voiced by Ed Asner) ties thousands of balloons to his house. But soon after lifting off he learns he isn’t alone on his epic journey – Russell (Jordan Nagai), a boy scout 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway. Playing out like a sugar-coated version of Gran Torino, the sweet adventure follows the odd couple as they traverse the rough terrain of a wondrous lost world and meet its colourful inhabitants.

Miranda will gain some much needed clarity around a recurring issue in her life, be that in the business space or with a personal matter. She may need to lean on others for support, as it may be an emotionally or physically taxing time for her. New challenges lie ahead for Miranda, this week and into the future, and she would do well to ensure she is well equipped to handle the unexpected. Things are looking good in the romance department, with sparks set to fly.

STARS STARS
20 April 1983
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
On 19 April, the second of two consecutive Libra full moons powers up your seventh house of commitments and contracts. Something you’ve been pondering for the past four weeks may finally become clear. A romantic spark could take the next step, or a business deal could move to negotiations.
From 20 April onward, the sun swings into Taurus and your social, group-centric eleventh house for a month. Take the opportunity to get out and connect with people, including those who are different to your usual set. It’s an excellent time to network and join forces with creative thinkers.
Circle 19 April as one of the month’s most important days. The Libra full moon helps bring a major personal project or decision to a head. The next four weeks can bring a joint venture opportunity or a chance to improve your earnings by pooling your resources for mutual gain.
The Sun begins its annual foray through Taurus and your fifth house of passion, pleasure and play for the next four weeks, bringing the promise of some long-overdue fun. On 22 April, the sun conjuncts with Uranus, the planet of unexpected events, which could spark a sudden attraction.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
The 19 April full moon illuminates your analytical sixth house of health and organisation. As you’re weighing your options, consider the impact they’ll have on your wellbeing and lifestyle. This full moon is also a nudge to get going on your fitness plans if they’re not already underway.
The sun moves into Taurus on 20 Ajpril, heating up your tenth house of long-term goals and career for the next four week. It’s an ideal time to focus on a few key milestones you want to reach this month and to make headway on your key ambitions.
Jupiter is here for a 13-month visit until 2 December – a transit that only occurs every 12 years. While bountiful Jupiter can bring new professional paths and exciting opportunities, it can also tempt us to rush into potentially risky moves. Make sure you’ve got the basics covered first.
If you meet someone this month and feel chemistry with them, it could be worth exploring as they might turn out to be a creative or intellectual supporter or partner in crime. Don’t rush to anoint them as your new BFF though; let the relationship unfold in due time.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
The Sun makes its annual conjunction with Uranus on 22 April, potentially stirring wild dreams or visions. You might get insight into an important change you need to make in your life. Someone could show their true colours or you decide to end a situation that’s draining your energy.
On 19 April, the full moon in Libra beams into your grounded, practical second house. Matters of security come into the spotlight, and your mind is on work and finances. A job, client or project you’ve been exploring could materialise. Now is the time to check how your budget is tracking.
On 20 April, the sun begins its month-long visit to Taurus and your sixth house of wellness and organisation. Time for a cleanup – of your home, habits and health. It’s an ideal time to get some solid systems in place that will help you run things efficiently and smoothly.
With Venus in your own sign, you’re likely to be at your most creative, affectionate and romantic. Don’t be afraid to let other people know what you are thinking as they are likely to be very impressed by your ideas and will provide a welcome boost to your ego.

Still thirsty for more
Ritzy razzamatazz
After more than a decade of making music, they’re still as thirsty as ever. They’ve released an indie EP, which garnered triple J airplay back in 2003; three critically-acclaimed studio albums; an acoustic fan favourites record; and a swag of classic tracks. Australian rock stalwarts Thirsty
Head back into the Golden Age of Hollywood by watching the musical extravaganza Puttin’ On the Ritz at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre on Sunday 2 June. My favourite things BUGS Unfortunately and rather ironically I can’t eat chocolate. I’m dairy intolerant! Instead I enjoy feasting on insects; spiders are my absolute favourite, and don’t get me started on how much I enjoy a good bull ant. I once ate a tarantula on holiday in Thailand.
DIGGING Not to brag, but I’m an excellent burrower. With my strong forelimbs and well-developed claws I was born to dig. I’ve got a number of burrows at home and move between them for shelter both from predators and the heat of the day.
MUSIC Due to my enormous ears and hypersensitive hearing, I’m a bit of an audiophile. A typical Gen-Xer, my favourite musicians are the songbirds of my generation like Kurt Cobain, Michael Hutchence and The Wiggles.
Easter Bilby AUSTRALIAN EASTER LEGEND
Just like his Northern Hemisphere cousin, Easter Bilby is a very popular marsupial amongst Australian households, delivering equal doses of chocolate and cheer across the nation every Easter. Our endangered bilby rose to prominence as an Aussie Easter icon in the 1970s. Queensland children’s author Rose-Marie Dusting selfpublished the book, Billy the Aussie Easter Bilby, in 1979 and is recognised by many as the creator of the Easter Bilby. In 1991, the Foundation for Rabbit-Free Australia set out to replace the Easter Bunny with the bilby to raise awareness of Australia’s vulnerable native wildlife. Since then, a range of chocolate manufacturers have jumped on board and have been producing chocolate bilbies instead of bunnies. The funds raised through chocolate Easter bilby sales over the past 25 years have helped brighten the future of bilbies by providing a boost to a number of bilby conservation projects. 46
SURFING You’ve all seen the Hawaiian shirts with surfing Santa, well guess who got the North Pole’s most famous resident out amongst the waves in the first place? It was this guy! I’ve been hitting the surf for years and love hanging 10.
MY FAMILY While we’re not as common as we used to be, bilbies are making a comeback in part due to some amazing conservation efforts. In South Australia, where we were once extinct, I’ve now got more than 1,000 cousins galloping around a large reserve built by the Arid Recovery Plan.
