Marching on Push to relocate Adamstown war memorial

Newcastle Weekly contents

thursday 25 april 2019

This week... From the editor It's quite special that this week's edition reaches the palms of your hands on Anzac Day. This morning, hundreds upon thousands of Novocastrians gathered at Anzac services across the Hunter, to commemorate the sacrifices of our forefathers. First coined in 1916, Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during World War I, when the Anzacs set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula. After World War II, the day's significance evolved to commemorate the lives of Australians who died in that war, too. Today, we remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. With the inevitable march of time comes the loss of men directly involved in these wars, leaving only first, second and even third-generation relatives to don their medals in their honour. It's vitally important they continue to do so, says Adamstown Anzac Committee president and one of our cover stars, Gerard Williams. Case in point, the Adamstown RSL sub-Branch folded in 2016 and joined forces with Merewether and Hamilton sub-Branches, known today as Merewether-Hamilton-Adamstown RSL sub-Branch. news Lights dimmed on Dudley historical collection

Ardel Prout has curated the Dudley History Room for 35 years. Photo: Peter Stoop

Thirty-five years ago, a love of antiques and local history drove Ardel Prout to create a museum at Dudley Public School. From mining artefacts to household goods and police ledgers, the room contains more than 1,000

items from the seaside town’s past, which have been lovingly preserved. However, waning interest and the school’s need to use the space will see it emptied later this year. Mrs Prout, whose children attended the school, established the

museum with teacher Claire Ede with the initial goal of educating students about Dudley’s mining background. “When we first started it, none of the children would have been aware there was a mine [under the football fields],” she said. “That’s why we started the history project, so the children would know that this was actually a mining community.” Generous donations saw the museum not only acquire lamps, maps and associated items from the Burwood No. 3 mine (later Dudley Colliery), but other interesting pieces, including a pram from 1936, Masonic Lodge memorabilia and an Arnott’s adding machine. Burwood No. 3 opened in 1888, stemming from South Burwood Colliery’s two others near Glenrock Lagoon.

Its largest disaster occurred on 21 March 1898, when an accumulation of gas in the pit caused an explosion, which was reported to have been heard as far away as Belmont, Charlestown and Merewether. Fifteen men and three horses died, however, only 10 bodies were recovered before the mine was sealed and flooded due to the severity of the underground fires. Mrs Prout is now looking for the owners of the museum’s donated items, or descendants of the owners, so they can be returned. “There’s heaps of stuff that I probably won’t be able to do anything with,” she said. “If anyone remembers donating and they would like it back I need them to contact me, otherwise I’ll distribute it.” Phone 4944 8393. - Melissah Comber

Barriers to accessing treatment for crystal methamphetamine addiction will form part of Cessnock council’s submission to the NSW Government inquiry into the drug. Also known as ‘ice’, crystal methamphetamine is a stimulant, which is stronger and more addictive than the powder form of methamphetamine, ‘speed’. The 2016 National Drug Strategy Household Survey found 6.3%, or 1.3 million, Australians over the age of 14 had used methamphetamine, and that 1 in 70 people had used it in the previous year. in NSW, and has now called for public submissions. Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said the council had prioritised making a submission to the inquiry. “This is a dangerous drug and we know it’s tearing apart people’s lives,” he said. “We’ve spoken to numerous individuals, families and local community service providers who shared their knowledge and experiences. “One theme became quite clear; that there are limited treatment options available and a number of barriers to accessing existing services.” Submissions must be lodged by 7 May. news Fears tower over Toronto development A development proposal for a sixstorey block plus rooftop terrace in Toronto has ignited fears it could set a new height precedent if approved. Private developer Toronto Investments has lodged a development application with Lake Macquarie council for a mixeduse development at 114-120 Cary Street, next to McDonald’s, that consists of two main buildings, the other being five storeys high. Both buildings, currently under council assessment, exceed the existing four-storey height code set by the Lake Macquarie Local Environment Plan 2014. A block away, in Bath Street, residents are concerned that this exemption could have ramifications for an untouched, council-owned operational parcel of land on the foreshore, which the council voted

in April last year to develop into a mixed-use building up to six storeys high. The Toronto Foreshore Protection Group (TFPG) quickly formed to oppose the development, despite the fact that, to this day, neither a development application nor a master plan for the area had been produced. There had been no further movement on the site until March, when Lake Macquarie council appointed SHAC Architects to undertake community engagement and develop the design of the Toronto Foreshore masterplan and the mixed-use development. “At this stage, council expects to submit a development application for the Bath Street site to the Hunter and Central Coast Regional Planning Panel in late 2019 or early 2020,” a council spokesperson told

Newcastle Weekly. “The Regional Planning Panel will assess the application independently of council.” However, the TFPG fears the Cary Street project could have a snowball effect and give the council grace to press on with a six-storey development on Bath Street, which would affect the overall amenity of the area. “There is no evidence of any community push in [Lake Macquarie’s] west ward for building heights above the current LEP and it’s certainly not the role of councillors to redefine urban design,” TFPG spokesperson Howard Dick said. “Someone’s called their bluff [and now] private developers are already claiming six storeys as the new planning guideline.” - Georgia Osland

CDAH hosts access forum Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson, council representatives and relevant agencies will be on hand at a Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH) Planning Cafe to hear local concerns and barriers to independence. CDAH Executive Officer David Belcher said people with disabilities consistently described how transportation barriers impacted their access employment, education, healthcare and community life. “Be it cars, trains, buses or taxis, people with disabilities still face massive challenges in getting around and some people continue to be

isolated and excluded because of

transport issues,” he said. The forum will be held from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Thursday 2 May at Maitland Town Hall. For more information, visit cdah.org.au

Share the Dignity volunteers Lesley Slevin and Julianne Lewis by the new Pinkbox installed at The Place: Charlestown Community Centre. Photo: Peter Stoop

Pinkboxes to the rescue Period poverty be gone: the first two Share the Dignity vending machines in Newcastle have landed. The machines, aptly labelled Pinkboxes, dispense sanitary pads and tampons, free of charge, for women and young girls who find themselves in a spot of trouble, or who can’t afford these basic

necessities and must resort to lessthan-dignified measures to manage their period. One has been installed at The Place: Charlestown Community Centre and the other at Soul Café in Newcastle’s east end. Each machine releases one ‘period pack’ at a time, containing

six tampons and two pads. The packs are paid for by donations from people and organisations right across Australia through donation drives and, most recently, a collaboration with Woolworths, where 5 cents from each sanitary item sold goes to Share the Dignity. The vending machines themselves aren’t cheap to install; each one costs $9,000, then, of course, there are ongoing costs associated with stocking them. The nib Foundation helped fund The Place’s vending machine, which new volunteer Julianne Lewis is tasked with managing, while Lesley Slevin is Soul Café’s go-to girl. They’re known as Share the Dignity’s ‘sheroes’, and they’re part of an army of volunteers across Australia who look after Pinkboxes in schools, community hubs and outreach centres. Ms Lewis said it was empowering to meet the community’s needs.

“Young girls at school – what’s the one thing they don’t want to talk about?” she asked. “This way, they can get what they need without being embarrassed by having to ask someone [for a pad or tampon].” The Place’s program and marketing coordinator, Cristelle Govender, said many people, particularly youth, frequented the centre to take part in its various programs, making it the perfect site for a Pinkbox. “It fits in really well with the services we offer and we’re pleased to be able to assist,” she said. During April and August, small businesses serve as drop-off points for sanitary item donations for the community to contribute to Share the Dignity’s mission. War memorial on the move about the children. “I thought, ‘The time has come [to act]’.” The new site, on the corner of Glebe Road and Bryant Street, has already been scoped by an engineering firm and artist’s impressions have been drawn up. Mr Williams said the newand-improved memorial would be bordered by rosemary originating from Gallipoli, as well as a Lone Pine. He hoped the move would inspire younger generations, including relatives of war veterans and current servicemen and women, to carry the Anzac legacy. “Most of the [veterans] are in their nineties; even the Vietnam guys have thinned out,” he said. “We’re light on the ground now, so it’s vitally important for the younger generations to get involved. “It’s the march of time.” Adamstown commemorated Anzac Day today (Thursday 25 April) with a morning march and service for the first time since 2017, after its RSL sub-Branch folded, prompting it to join forces with Merewether and Hamilton. Safety concerns have prompted the Adamstown Anzac Committee to scout a new home for the town’s war memorial. Committee president Gerard Williams told Newcastle Weekly the move, which was estimated to cost about $100,000, to Adamstown No.1 Oval was supported by Newcastle council, which owned the land; Newcastle federal MP Sharon Claydon; and the Merewether-HamiltonAdamstown RSL sub-Branch. He said the committee would look to secure funding through corporate sponsorships, state and federal grants, as well assistance from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, with the aim of moving the war memorial by Remembrance Day. The memorial currently sits adjacent to Newcastle Healthcare on Brunker Road. It was rededicated there in 1960 after it was originally built on the corner of Glebe and Brunker roads. But, after the closure of Adamstown RSL Club – where the medical centre now stands – in 2015, its current location no longer makes any historical sense. Mr Williams said “enough was enough” after last year’s Remembrance Day service. “We probably had about 500 people crammed into that small area, on a main road that we couldn’t close,” he said. “I was constantly worried

Refurb brings new soul to vital city service

Soul Cafe volunteer and kitchen supervisor Glenda Lee sets up for the day’s service. Photo: Peter Stoop

Newcastle’s Soul Café has undergone a $20,000 refurbishment thanks to a federal grant and Port of Newcastle giant, Orica. The cash injection funded a facelift of the café area and upgrade of kitchen facilities for the charity, which provides access to services, hot meals and conversation for the city’s vulnerable. In the café area, a paint job was undertaken and new furniture purchased, replacing items that had been in use since the café opened in 2003. “We want our guests to sit in a beautiful environment; we want the best for them,” Soul Café chief executive officer Rick Prosser said. “Those tables are an essential component of engaging with people; it opens up a conversation of how we are able to help.” In the kitchen, the café’s 145

volunteers will be able to use upgraded fittings, including a dishwasher, pre-rinser and 20-litre mixer. Each week, the volunteers give 360 hours to deliver around 700 meals, both sit-down and takeaway. In order to obtain a grant from the Stronger Communities Programme, a dollar-for-dollar commitment was needed. The café was unable to meet the requirement on its own, so approached Orica, which jumped at the opportunity to partner with the café and Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon. “Delivering meals is critically important to us – those sorts of additions just can’t be in your budget,” Mr Prosser said. “We’re very thankful for everyone who supports us.” - Melissah Comber

Take a toddle for your ticker Heart disease is Australia’s biggest killer, and Heart Week will focus on making sure we’re on top of our ticker. From Sunday 28 April to Saturday 4 May, the Heart Foundation is encouraging the public and health professionals to start a conversation about heart health and steps to reduce the risk of heart disease. Locally, two walks will be held to promote making the most of physical activity opportunities and incorporating them into our everyday routines. “We know improvements in heart health come from good nutrition, good physical activity, giving up smoking, getting heart health checks, good sleep patterns and good social patterns,” Heart Foundation Regional Health Promotion Coordinator (Hunter), Deborah Moore, said. “Getting active is one of the easiest things out of that list because we’ve got the facilities here in Newcastle to do it, and we’ve generally got the good weather in Australia to do it.” According to the Australian

Bureau of Statistics, almost 43,500 deaths in Australia were attributed to cardiovascular (heart, stroke or blood vessel) disease in 2017. This equates to one person every 12 minutes. On Tuesday 30 April, a walk will be held in conjunction with the Nikinpa Aboriginal Child and Family Centre to Toronto Foreshore from 8.30am, with heart health checks available at the beginning and end of the walk. Meet at the centre on Beckley Avenue. In Newcastle, a lunchtime walk will be taken along the light rail route from the Newcastle Interchange to Pacific Park at 12.30pm on Friday 3 May. “This year the [Heart Week] theme is around aiming to get people to have a heart health check, but we also wanted to get the community involved in a walk so we can get people comfortable with taking advantage of the walkways,” Ms Moore said. “We want to bring people together and promote that physical activity opportunity.” - Melissah Comber

Barefoot waterskiiers compete in three disciplines – slalom, which involves crossing from one side of the watercourse to the other; tricks, where points are assigned based on difficulty and skill; and jump, in which competitors must reach a certain level of ski competency before attempting, due to the danger involved. Additionally, the skiiers are travelling at up to 70 kilometres per hour, roughly 20km/h faster than traditional waterskiing. “Most people look at barefoot as only going forwards, but a lot of it is going backwards as well which is a whole other level of difficulty,” Ian explained. “When it doesn’t work out for you, it doesn’t tickle.” The family has transitioned from its long-term hobby of traditional waterskiing.

It wouldn’t be a family sport without a bit of friendly competition by driving one another to perform well, with Ian and Lachlan often looking to one-up each other. “I’ve always been the one who did the stupid tricks [in traditional waterskiing],” Ian said. “I thought, ‘Let’s go to the next level with this’, and we’ve all jumped on board. “We’re a family – that’s our biggest support of each other, but we’re also our biggest competitors.” While it’s not a well-known sport and it’s not easy, for the Tresidders, it’s all about the thrill. “It’s extremely challenging, but it’s a fairly big adrenaline rush,” Ian said. “It’s just a real buzz to be able to achieve something every time you go out.” - Melissah Comber

A taste of some of the dishes on offer at Flotilla.

New jewel in Wickham crown Flotilla is the word on everyone’s lips. The newest addition to Wickham’s foodie scene offers fancy fare in a refined casual setting. With an inviting atmosphere, the quirky, wedge-shaped restaurant and bar on Albert Street is unique and intimate, yet unpretentious. The creative geniuses behind it are exSilverchair bassist and Newcastle royalty, Chris Joannou, and his close friend Zach Scholtz, whom we also have to thank for The Criterion Hotel in Carrington and The Edwards in Newcastle West. Many were devastated when a fire tore through The Edwards last June, but will be pleased to know Joannou said builders were “working to put the old girl back together again” for its reopening very soon. “It knocked the wind out of our sails a bit, but we’re back on track,” Joannou told Newcastle Weekly. Flotilla was in the works even before The Edwards, inspired by Joannou’s travels, particularly around Abbott Kinney Boulevard and Venice Beach in Los Angeles. He loved the vibe and colour palette, and the food was produce-driven and fresh. That’s exactly what he’s aimed to recreate at Flotilla – named so for its connection to Wickham’s harbourside heritage. The menu is a reflection of chefs Paul and Jess’ passion for food.

For them, the relationship between food producer and the chef is important: to have the food at its peak, they work closely with suppliers to secure the finest ingredients. The dishes are not overworked; the chefs work in the most creative and minimalistic way to let each ingredient shine. It’s honest yet refined. When asked how he could juggle running three establishments in Newcastle, Joannou replied with: “Life is a little busier, but I thoroughly enjoy the hospitality industry and providing a memorable experience.” Flotilla officially opened to the public before the Easter long weekend after two highly successful and coveted media launches. Never miss a beat at The Station Would you like tunes with that? A new food and music event has landed at The Station, Newcastle’s hippest new entertainment platform. Friday Bar Eats n Beats, hosted by Tangerine Events, takes place each Friday from 4pm to 10pm. Business owners Danielle Mayes and Nat Brown say they’re excited to kick off the next stage of The Station’s journey, now that the Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation has taken over the site and its temporary activation. “We are really thrilled to be involved – there is nothing else like The Station in Newcastle, which is what attracted us to create an event for this amazing space,” Mayes said. “Our event is about people and experiences, and we know from running Twilight Food 18

Market Feast Fest at Speers Point Park and at Blacksmiths Beach, that good food, good music and good people make a winning combination.” Each Friday, you can find food trucks serving up international cuisine; creative market stalls; live, local music; as well as a free kids’ zone with giant games for the young and young at heart. The Station, located at the corner of Scott and Watt streets, also has a licensed bar with craft beer and wine on tap. Friday Bar Eats n Beats is a free event with free street parking from 5pm. The closest carparks include Newcastle Foreshore, Bolton Street Carpark and King Street Mall. There is also free parking at No.2 Sportsground from 5pm, with the light rail running every few minutes from the Newcastle Interchange to the CBD.

So much more to Tocal Field Days With more than 99% of NSW still suffering the effects of drought, there’s never been a better time to get out and support our farmers. The annual Tocal Field Days are back next weekend and event manager Wendy Franklin said it’s the perfect opportunity to learn more about life on the land. “It can be a pretty tough gig to farm in this country and we want people to come and embrace it,” she told Newcastle Weekly. “There’s a lot more to farming than people realise and also a lot more to Tocal Field Days than people realise.” This year the event is themed around animals, with alpaca shearing, baby goat cuddling and a llama kissing booth all on the agenda, while the themed piglet

races will run across the weekend. For the moment, the race theme is shrouded in mystery, only to be revealed on the day. “It is a bit more quirky,” Ms Franklin said. “Every year when our piglets race, we’ve had a different theme; the royal wedding, football. “We have a more fun side to things – it’s not just having a pat [of an animal]. Where else can you go and kiss a llama?” Aside from animal interactions, demonstrations and exhibitors, attendees will also be able to indulge in gourmet food, see exquisite crafts and buy produce direct from the farmers, including the popular Tilse’s apples. While plenty of parking is available on-site, an hourly shuttle

bus will also run from Maitland train station. “The drought has been really tough and our farmers struggle on,” Ms Franklin said. “Everyone needs farming – if you eat, you need a farmer.

“Support the farms and come out and learn a little bit more.” Tocal Field Days will run from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 May. For more information, and to purchase tickets, visit tocalfielddays.com - Melissah FUN & Comber R LAUGHTE FOR ALL

Relaxed vibes and good times Comedians and vignerons have a lot in common. Each year they create a new product so they can share with the world what they love to do: for comedians, it’s a new show; for vignerons, it’s the year’s vintage. Comedian and wine lover Merrick Watts thought it was about time the two came together. Since its inception in 2017, the Grapes of Mirth comedy, food and wine showcase has sold out eight venues in wine regions around the country and will come to The Station on 11 May for Newcastle’s inaugural taste of the fun. It brings together seven comedians including Denise Scott, Nazeem Hussain and Luke

McGregor with six Hunter wine producers and multiple food vendors for a relaxed afternoon with friends. “It always just comes back to sharing – share wine, share food, share conversation and share a laugh,” Watts tells Newcastle Weekly. “If it was any more relaxed, you’d be asleep.” The idea for Grapes of Mirth was born from Watts’ experience hosting wine industry events, where he noticed just how relaxed his audience was. “I thought, ‘Why can’t that vibe be accessible to the public?’,” he says. “Keeping that vibe is really

important to us. “We’re not trying to put on a Big Day Out event, you don’t have to have a Red Bull and vodka and sit on somebody’s shoulders.” Running from 2pm to 9pm, a cruisy evening is planned to allow plenty of time to taste great local drops, grab a bite and, most importantly, have a conversation with the people around you. “It’s a really fun way to enjoy comedy,” Watts says. This will be Grapes of Mirth’s

first foray into the region, with Newcastle’s proximity to the Hunter Valley wineries and revitalisation positioning the city as an ideal location. “To be honest, I just really like Newy,” Watts says. “Newcastle is an emerging city – it’s got a really good vibe and new confidence now. “I really like that.” Tickets are on sale at grapesofmirth.com.au - Melissah Comber

Walkley Award-winning journalist Leigh Sales will headline the Sydney Writers’ Festival.

Sydney Writers’ Festival comes to Lake Mac The Sydney Writers’ Festival will be coming to Lake Macquarie next weekend, with the headline events being streamed directly to the Lake Mac Centre for Performing Arts. Ten sessions will be screened from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 May, featuring award-winning journalists, best-selling authors and Archibald Prize-winning artists. Highlights include a discussion about the relationships between politicians and the press, led by Annabel Crabb; a talk by Leigh Sales about how people endure tragedy; and a panel with Clementine Ford and Adam Liaw, which explores toxic masculinity. Lake Macquarie council’s Acting Arts, Culture and Tourism

Manager, Jo Smith, said the Live and Local – Live Stream from Sydney Writers’ Festival was a fabulous opportunity for people interested in hearing from renowned writers but who couldn’t make it to Sydney. “Our audiences will be able to get the full experience of the live Sydney event,” Ms Smith said. “They will not only hear from profound thinkers; they will have opportunity to participate in Q and A sessions, sending questions directly to the Sydney stage. “This is a great example of how digital live-streaming can connect our city and its people with regional, national and global events.” For session times, visit lakemaclibraries.eventbrite.com

In just a few weeks, The Creator Incubator will celebrate its second birthday. It’s hard to believe it was just two years ago that curator Braddon Snape received the keys to Shed15A from David Saddington. He says sometimes it feels as if it were longer, and other times it feels as if it were last month. The Creator Incubator (TCI) was launched in May 2017 in Hamilton North with nine creators and makers, including Snape, and now houses 28. It has been quite the rollercoaster ride, but it’s a ride Snape has loved sharing with an incredible group of talented creators over the past two years. In that time, TCI has hosted 18 exhibitions in the gallery, 12 theatre performances and events, numerous workshops and had more than 6,500 visitors. TCI has partnered with Lake

Macquarie City Art Gallery, Timeless Textiles and The Lock Up. As a partner in Independent Galleries Newcastle (IGN), it has participated in the inaugural IGN ART FAIR at Newcastle Art Gallery and held a TCI exhibition at Scratch Art Space in Sydney. TCI artists and creators have been recipients of art and design prizes, individual commissions and have exhibited widely. It wouldn’t be a birthday without a celebration, and TCI would love for you to join them at the Clyde Street shed on Saturday 4 May, from 4pm to 8pm, for festivities and the opening of the latest exhibition, Free Range. Ken O’Regan will coordinate kids’ activities, Blue Tide and The Alligators will bring the music, the Bao Bros Food Van will be onsite, and drinks will be supplied by Murray’s Brewing Co. and Scarborough.

Artists sought to brighten Now showing Shazam! (M) Lake Mac streetscape Vibrant streetscapes are set to enliven Lake Macquarie, with the council launching its traffic signal art project. The council is seeking expressions of interest from artists, with five traffic signal boxes in Belmont, Valentine, Warners Bay, Cardiff and Windale up for grabs as blank canvases. “This is a great opportunity for local artists to think outside the box, get creative and share their ideas to help beautify some of the intersections in Lake Macquarie city,” Lake Macquarie council’s Acting Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism, Jo Smith, said. “The project gives local artists a chance to get their art on the streets, while making a valuable contribution to their community.” Artists are required to submit full colour designs for each visible side of the box, images of which can be found in the online application. Designs must be original, positive and reflective of the local community. Blank space, which could be susceptible to graffiti, is discouraged, and excessive use of dark colour cannot be used as it can cause the box to overheat. In selecting the final designs, the judging panel will be looking at vibrancy, its connection to the location and the community appeal. Applications close on Tuesday 30 April. Successful artists will be notified in early May and receive $500 to complete the work. More information can be found at lakemac.com.au.

In 1974 in upstate New York, a privileged young boy named Thaddeus Sivana is magically transported to the Rock of Eternity, a magical temple in another dimension, by the ancient wizard Shazam. Being tempted by the Seven Deadly Sins, the boy is deemed unworthy and is quickly banished back to Earth. In present day Philadelphia during Christmas, 14-year-old homeless foster child Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is running amok, and soon finds himself at the Rock of Eternity, facing the same test of heart Thaddeus had all those years before. The character of Captain Marvel has had a legally complicated past with the character now simply named ‘Shazam’. The cinematic unveiling of Shazam has been equally troubled, due to the

indecision of the correct tone going forward in the wake of The Dark Knight. Due to the recent DC Cinematic Universe reboot to a more family-friendly tone a la the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shazam balances the humour, optimism and colour of a comic book along with the darkness of modern day urban living and a 1980s inspired villain. The wish fulfilment that Billy and the audience feels through Shazam’s exploits is countered by Thaddeus’ envy of the opportunities and powers that could have been his. The cinematography is also a throwback to 1980s popcorn flicks, which is a welcome change to the overuse of close-up, shallow depthof-field and shaky cam since Man of Steel. Verdict: A fun movie with rich characters, great performances and heart. 4.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams

Book talk

This week, Michael Popple checks out three captivating new pieces of historical fiction. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog, unseenlibrary.com In a Great Southern Land by Mary-Anne O’Connor HQ, $32.99

In 1851, Australia was many things to different people. To Eve Richards, it is her prison after she is unfairly sentenced to transportation. For Kieran Clancy and his family, it is a chance of freedom from English oppression in Ireland. When Eve and Kieran meet in Australia they find themselves drawn to each other, but can they survive the chaotic events of the Eureka Stockade? O’Connor has written an outstanding piece of Australian fiction, wrapping several iconic aspects of Australia’s colonial history around a strong dramatic tale. This is an emotional and enjoyable story that is well worth checking out.

Shadows of Athens by JM Alvey

Nemesis by Rory Clements

Orion, $22.99

Zaffre, $29.99

Athens, 443 BC. When young playwright Philocles finds a dead body on his doorstep, it is the last thing he needs. With his first play days away from being performed, Philocles finds himself investigating the murder. However, his investigation soon uncovers a massive conspiracy that could have severe ramifications for Athens. This is an impressive debut from Alvey, with the highlight being the incredibly detailed depiction of ancient Athens. The central mystery is very clever and uses the details of Athenian history and culture to great effect. The result is a terrific historical mystery that proves to be quite addictive.

Professor Tom Wilde is holidaying in France when he learns that a former student, Marcus, is being held in a nearby camp. He helps him to escape, and they return to Cambridge when the Nazis invade Poland. However, Marcus is hiding a connection to a sinister spy ring and Wilde must discover whom and what Marcus truly is. This is the third book in Clements’ fantastic series set around the Cambridge colleges in the 1930s. He makes exceptional use of the early World War II background to enhance the book’s gripping conspiracy, creating an excellent new addition to this series.

Style file: Allison Janney

6 January 2019: 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, The Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Award-winning American actress Allison Janney is somewhat of a chameleon, adapting to whatever drama or comedic role she takes on next. She is best-loved for such titles as I, Tonya (Golden Globe winner, 2017), Juno (2007), Hairspray (2007) and American Beauty (1999). Janney is also well-known for her lead role in Chuck Lorre sitcom, Mom. What’s more, her red-carpet style is epic. Here, NW Fashion and Beauty Editor, Georgia Osland, recaps some of Janney’s most striking ensembles – and all from the past year alone! Like a fine wine, Janney is only getting better with age.

Winter-proof your home

Look up – If your roof isn’t watertight, you will feel the consequences in the colder months. It might be time to enlist a professional to check for broken roof tiles or bedding and pointing that may need maintenance. Dry your wet areas – If parts of your bathroom, kitchen or laundry are damaged or leaking, you could be staring down the barrel of rising damp. Ensure your wet areas are dry to avoid a much bigger problem down the track such as mould and mildew build-up.

Adjusting the heating in your home by as little as one or two degrees could save you money.

There are loads of practical ways the average Aussie can ‘winterproof’ their home, which will make winter more comfortable and affordable, writes tradie duo The Bostik Boys.

Find the cracks – Cold air can slither through the cracks throughout your home. Locating and sealing these cracks and using draft stoppers like the good old door snakes can stop heat from escaping and save you up to 25% on your heating bill.

Heat the rooms you frequent – Isolate the areas you want to heat by closing doors and blocking off areas of your home or office that aren’t used often. If you have central heating, check that your ducts are working properly and close off the ones in rooms you don’t use often. Watch the thermostat – Keeping your home heated to 18–20°C is ideal. Every degree you reduce heat can save up to

10% on your energy use. Short showers – Most of us remember to have short showers in summer to save water, but we often forget that hot water usage is responsible for around 21% of an energy bill. Shorter showers this winter will result in lower bills. Choose the right décor – Shutting (or adding) curtains and blinds to a home is an easy way to stop heat escaping. A third of your heat can leak out through windows. Layer up – Rather than crank up the heating, head for the wardrobe and put on another layer of clothing. If your family is comfortably walking around in shorts and T-shirts in the middle of winter, you probably have the heating set too high. Check your energy plans – If you’ve been with the one gas or electricity provider for a while, spend a bit of time looking at what rates competitors can offer you. They are usually willing to offer great deals to get your business.

Could your kitchen do with a facelift...at less cost?

In Flanders Fields: perpetuating poppies It is an honour to have a column published on Anzac Day. I would like to remember Jim Oliver who, this year, passed on. This wonderful gent and his wife, Shirley, for many years preserved the ‘Springsong’ poppy, which was a legacy from George Dent of New Lambton, where, on Anzac Day, gardeners lined up in their hundreds to buy as many poppies as they could fit in their gardens. Poppies prefer an alkaline soil, which means digging in poultry manure and adding lime during cultivation. Seedlings require a little TLC until they become stronger; it helps a week or two after planting to aerate the soil. Rosemary, also traditionally worn on Anzac Day, is a little easier to grow. It is so hardy it will thrive in poor soil and tolerate coastal winds, growing up to 1.2 metres.

Golden years shine bright for Latitude One residents Barb and Kevin Terry, residents of Latitude One, have stumbled upon a lifestyle that shines brightly on their golden years. Barb and Kevin recently made the move from their family home, which boasted five bedrooms and three bathrooms set across two storeys… and all the maintenance that comes with such scale. They decided to downsize and turn their favourite travel destination, Port Stephens, into their new home. Latitude One ensured them a low maintenance, beautifully designed home, and the peace of mind to tick off their travel bucket list.

Life doesn’t slow down when you retire, in fact it’s quite the opposite – as Barb and Kevin have found out. “There’s always something to do, people to talk to, not to mention location and facilities: on-site parking for caravans and the multi-million dollar community clubhouse – we sure live a gold class lifestyle,” Barb says. Kevin says he’s looking forward to the men’s shed, “It’s very important, I know of three other gents that are excited as well, so it’ll be a good thing for us men to be involved in this. “The ladies have their arts and crafts, swimming and the likes,

so it’s great to have somewhere to spend some time together and get creative,” Kevin said. Barb and Kevin’s typical day is just like any other. “We still enjoy our social outings like lunches and dinners, however we now return to a home that is surrounded by like-minded people who’ve quickly become close friends. “We know that when we go away, the lawns and gardens will be maintained, and our home and belongings will be safe when we return. This is a lifestyle that certainly suits us,” Kevin said. When asked by Ingenia Lifestyle if their new home or

their new lifestyle was the best part of living at Latitude One, their answer was simple. “Both! How can you differentiate between the two? They go hand in hand with each other. We’re extremely happy with our home and extremely happy with the lifestyle,” Barb said. Latitude One Project Sales Manager, Sheree Richardson, said now is the time to secure this lifestyle for your golden years. “With stage releases one to five now sold out, we’re excited to announce that we’ve launched into release six! “Book in a home tour today, as this gold class lifestyle needs to be seen to be believed, and

Residents Kevin and Barb Terry my team and I will be happy to show you around the start of your golden years,” Sheree said. For more information, please visit www.liveinportstephens. com.au or contact Sheree Richardson on 0408 295 737.

PICK OF THE WEEK The Man Who Knew Infinity Friday, SBS, 8.30pm, (2015) In the same vein as The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything comes this film about the life of Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, who in 1913 travels to Trinity College to work with professor G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons). Ramanujan, played by Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel (pictured left), was working as a clerk in Madras before his genius with numbers won him an invitation to work with Hardy on theories which would feed into the study of string theory and black holes.

The Woman In Black Saturday, NBN, 11.25pm, M (2012) It appears that Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe can’t get away from films that deal with the supernatural. A young solicitor (Radcliffe, pictured) is sent to a small village on England’s east coast to settle the estate of a recently deceased, childless woman. During his time at the woman’s property, he is haunted by the titular woman in black and notices that horrible things start happening to children when she makes herself seen. Radcliffe’s performance deserves kudos. Based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel.

Saturday, 7MATE, 7pm, PG (2012) Kids love Scottish accents, if the popularity of Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon is any indication – and while those films weren’t set in Scotland, Disney/ Pixar’s Brave is awash with tartan from start to finish. With a swath of talented Scots lending their voices, Brave is a touching tale of family and fate, set in the magical Kingdom of DunBroch. Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire) plays the heroine, Princess Merida, who in a moment of madness puts a spell on her mother (Emma Thompson). To undo the damage, Merida must unravel a riddle, which leads her on a perilous and emotional journey through the highlands.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR The Solar Eclipse earlier this month (8 April) began a new 18-year cycle. This one of the best times to begin something new. The universe will support you in this through to October, giving you the time to build and make it a success. A positive financial change is coming.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY The planets place an emphasis on your health, work, pets and activities you do behind the scenes this week. Venus square to Saturn indicated you are needing more love. You have to cut down on your spending and you may need more rest and sunshine.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE This is an ideal time to pursue your hopes and wishes by connecting with new people and aligning your energies with those in your social circle or community. You may have to make do with less or work harder to produce financially.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY Your job, business and career take

This is a time when Channing will have to rely on friends to help him and he will, in turn, be a good friend to others. He will feel the need to be part of a group, which may be political or work related. He will make achievements as part of a group or team, will have to work in cooperation with others and possibly in charge of others; he cannot achieve much on his own. There may be a home renovation or move during the year ahead.

much of your time and attention. This is a time of increased recognition or coming before the public. Hard work is involved, overcoming obstacles, having a plan and a schedule are the things that are needed for your success.

financial gain. This follows the 8 April Solar Eclipse that placed an emphasis on business and personal relationships. It’s a very creative influence, opening up the opportunity to turn your creativity in to a paying situation.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

You are in a phase of endings and beginnings. This is an ideal time to make long-range plans. All things of a spiritual nature, higher mind and higher learning, as well as travel are of benefit to you. A friendship could turn into something more.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Blessings come to you from a partner and from those who are close to you. With the 24 April Lunar Eclipse, there could be many changes coming up for a brother or sister including a new romance and an improvement in their financial situation during the coming six months.

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT The Lunar Eclipse on 24 April has set up a six-month period for

With the Lunar Eclipse on 24 April in your first house, you need to be more health conscious during the coming six months. You may be concerned over a parent, a boss, your business or work situation. Romance, creativity and money are favoured especially during April, May and June.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC The planets bring the possibility of love and romance during the coming year. Don’t allow fears, insecurities or disappointments from the past to block the love you are seeking. Avenues to express your creativity are opening up especially in the writing, teaching and publishing areas.

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN Venus rules your house of romance so you could meet or hear from someone out of your past. Venus favouring Pluto empowers you with the will to accomplish whatever goals you have set for yourself, personally or professionally, so long as it is your passion.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB The planets indicate a very busy time so you may find yourself on the go, involved with neighbours, lots of phone calls and paper work. You may be worried about your health and property matters but you will feel better about things as July comes to a close.

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR The 24 April Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio is excellent for writing, publishing, teaching and travel. Blessings come through your work, the people you work for, or your own business. You may find it difficult to receive the love and affection you desire until after July.

My favourite things

GOLF Golf is not just a game; it is a gathering of friends. The friendships we have made from golf are enduring and treasured.

GEOFF I married Geoff (seated in the middle) in 1966 and we are still happily married 53 years later!

TRAVEL Travelling overseas or within Australia makes you appreciate the amazing place we live in, here in the Hunter. We really love going to Canada to see our lovely Canadian family.

Jan Waugh

JOHN HUNTER CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL KIDS CLUB PRESIDENT

Jan was born and raised in Lithgow, NSW. After a very successful career in teaching and in TAFE, Jan and her husband Geoff retired in 2000 and played golf, travelled, and worked for the Save Belmont Wetlands group. In 2000, Jan joined John Hunter Children’s Hospital Kids Club after her granddaughter fell very ill, where she served as secretary for 17 years before becoming president. The club has raised millions of dollars to purchase equipment for the children’s hospital. Kids Club is deeply embedded in the Newcastle community, with regular donations and support from Newcastle Harness Racing Club, Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, Newcastle Cake Decorators Guild, Newcastle Lapidary Club, Horizons Ladies Craft Group, Newcastle Spiritualist Church, Newcastle Theatre Company, Grill’d and many others. 62

KIDS CLUB Working to raise money is always pleasurable because you know it will buy equipment that will change a child’s life or wellbeing. Every dollar we raise is a dollar we didn’t have before. We always welcome new members or donations; phone 0418 487 865.

FAMILY We have two lovely sons and are very proud of them. They both excel in their careers. Each son is happily married to a special woman and they each have two daughters and a son, so six beautiful grandkids.
