This week... From the editor I had a ball (pun intended) at the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service's 2019 Hunter Rescue Ball on Friday. In my line of work, I am privileged to support and have great relationships with a number of non-profits, including, but not limited to, the rescue helicopter service, Ronald McDonald House, the Salvation Army and Lifeline. It adds a special element to the job by giving it extra meaning. There are other sources of fulfi lment; sometimes it’s as simple as being a conduit for a worthy message for the masses. This week, for example, Newcastle Weekly is helping advocate Jill Emberson to raise the profi le of ovarian cancer. It might surprise you to know that ovarian cancer research receives four times less funding than breast cancer, of which the survival rate is twice as high. Jill is one of the unlucky ones. Ovarian cancer will take her life, leaving behind her strong, beautiful, only daughter Malia. There’s no way to sugarcoat it, but Jill doesn’t want to. She’s using her voice, while she still has it, to make a great big cacophonous noise to draw attention to the disease, in the hopes that her daughter’s generation will have a much better chance at beating it.

news New rescue vessel springs into action with early save A new, fast response vessel has officially been unveiled by Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie to help volunteers keep the waters safe. As fate would have it, the stateof-the-art addition didn’t take long to perform its first rescue at Pelican Boat Base. “We were about to start the ceremony and had a crew on the boat to raise the flag,” unit commander Mal Wardrop says. “A family had come out to start fishing when a little toddler fell in [the water] and mum and dad dived in after him. “Crewmen raced out to get the life ring, pulled them in, got them on the boat and checked they were okay before sending them home. “It’s good that we were there.” The Sailfish Catamaran, which,

when fully-equipped, will be worth more than $350,000, can respond to emergencies on the lake and up to 15 nautical miles offshore. It has been named Neil Grieves to honour the service of the former Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie unit commander, who passed away unexpectedly last year after more than three decades as a volunteer. Mr Wardrop says it’s a fitting tribute. “Not everybody has the opportunity to have a marine rescue vessel named after them,” he says. “Neil had spent a lot of years as a regional controller and had a long history of involvement with marine rescue. “It just so happened that he passed away as we were settling details of the new vessel, so a couple

of guys here who knew him really well suggested it would be a nice tribute.” Mr Wardrop adds the new vessel will be a welcome boost in volunteers’ efforts to respond to emergencies. “We now have two vessels [like this] – it has a high speed, is well equipped and is capable of going right offshore,” he says. “That gives us flexibility when we do need to go out there to rescue people.”

According to Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie, 1,645 radio calls were logged by volunteers at the Swansea base in March alone. More than 300 boaties logged on when they hit the water, while a further 66 vessels were tracked offshore as they passed along the coastline. Boat crews also responded to 32 calls for help. This included 22 tows and four jump starts. - Ben Murphy

Employment opportunities for people with a disability have been given a boost, with House with No Steps undertaking a major upgrade of its Newcastle commercial laundry. More than $2.8 million has been spent on increasing the capacity of the Warabrookbased service, which will see production increased from 25 tonnes of laundry per week to up to 75 tonnes over the next year. As a result, 17 new jobs will be created, including 12 for people with a disability. “We mainly exist to provide employment for people with a disability,” House with No Steps Executive Director of Businesses, Brett Lacey, explained. “Employment opportunities are quite limited and we do see that we can be a part of the solution. “The alternative being [for those unable to secure employment] that they are not involved in the community at all.”

Upgrades included the installation of a 12-compartment batch washer, a heavy press system, two high-speed dryers and an overhead rail system, which Mr Lacey said had also contributed to improved safety and quality. “It’s fairly well automated now, so it cuts down on the need to be lifting linen and moving between stations,” he said. “The quality has also significantly improved. “Stains on sheets can now be picked up with a camera imaging system.” The federal government supported the project to the tune of $1.4 million, with House with No Steps contributing the rest. “It’s been a pretty big investment,” Mr Lacey said. “We had to consider whether we wanted to be a major player in the laundry business. “That’s the decision we made for the benefit of our employees.” - Melissah Comber

DA lodged for $28 million Maitland Administration Centre Maitland council has lodged a development application for a $28 million city administration centre, to be constructed on the east side of the Maitland Town Hall. The council has long outgrown its current premises, on the west side of the town hall, with its more than 500 employees accommodated at a range of sites across the city, including the Maitland Visitor Information Centre and Maitland Gaol.

A 2015 brief prepared by BVN Architecture identified that office space would need to grow to more than 6,000 square metres over the next 30 years. The proposed new building has a floor area of almost 7,500 square metres and will be integrated with the town hall and the circa 1860 old town hall café shopfront. A new loading dock and refurbished kitchen will service both facilities, while 202 formal car

parks, including nine accessible spaces, will be provided. “Maitland continues to grow, which means so does the number of council employees,” Maitland mayor Loretta Baker said. “This administration centre is an investment in Maitland as well as staff and I am really excited to see the project come to fruition.” In addition to the $28 million building, the associated ground works, town hall upgrades and

public domain improvements will take the total project cost to an estimated $43 million. It will be funded through loan borrowings. Completion is expected by the end of 2021. The existing building will not be retained as council offices. The development application will be determined by the Hunter and Central Coast Regional Planning Panel.

The tenderness of finiteness How do you celebrate Mother’s Day knowing there are only a fi nite number of them left? Exactly as you always have. Last year it was a picnic on a park bench on the shores of Sydney Harbour; this year it might be an intimate lunch, tucked away in a restaurant.

Mother’s Day, and the other 364 days of the year, has always been special for ABC Newcastle radio presenter Jill Emberson and her daughter, Malia Emberson-Lafoa’i. Being her only daughter, whom Jill raised for 18 years as a single mother, Malia and Jill’s bond was always going to be unbreakable.

But they never expected they would have so little time together in the grand scheme of things. The fi rst shockwave came in February 2016, when Jill was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The second one – impossible to digest – came when she and her family learned the cancer had metastasized to her brain. It was Stage 4 and terminal. It’s a cruel twist of fate both Jill and Malia have faced head-on with courage and dignity. Like mother, like daughter; it is clear to this journalist from a 15-minute interview that 23-yearold law student Malia has inherited many of Jill’s strengths, not least of which is her fortitude, conviction and sense of humour. That neither of them have collapsed under the sheer weight of such a grim prognosis is a testament to the human spirit. “Everyone says their mum is the best, but Georgia, mine is the best,”

Malia tells Newcastle Weekly. “It’s quite interesting to see your mum go through so many different versions of herself; some of her own choosing, and others, like this, not. “But even [in her terminal diagnosis], mum still had a choice to become an advocate.” Jill has not taken her diagnosis lying down, grasping every opportunity to raise the profi le of the deadly gynaecological cancer – for which the survival rates are about half that of breast cancer – by engaging in public speaking and sharing her personal journey through the raw, eye-opening podcast, Still Jill. Yesterday, for World Ovarian Cancer Day (8 May), Jill joined forces with other women touched by ovarian and breast cancer to bridge the divide between the two, in terms of research and funding, by dressing in pink from the waist up and teal from the waist down. More than 20,000 people supported farmers, agriculture and local organisations at this year’s Tocal Field Days. The three-day event, held at the Tocal Agricultural Centre in Paterson, wrapped up on Sunday. Tocal Field Days manager Wendy Franklin expected about $35,000 from ticket sale proceeds would be donated to community groups involved in the event. All the usual favourites such as piglet races, alpaca shearing, gardening talks and livestock demonstrations proved popular once again. Councils exhibit budgets for new financial year Four Hunter councils have drafted their budgets for the next financial year and are seeking residents’ input before giving the final tick. Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, Maitland and Cessnock councils have placed their 2019-20 operational plans on public exhibition. The plans detail the councils’ expected revenue streams and where they will spend the money, including on facilities, staff and capital works around the cities. Lake Macquarie council has the largest budget, at $356 million. Out of a $93 million capital works spending plan, $37.5 million will go to the city’s roads encompassing a range of reconstruction, rehabilitation and kerb works, such as in Alexander Parade in Caves Beach, Nelson Street in Barnsley and Frith Street in Kahibah. Other highlights include $1.5 million for the Speers Point to Glendale cycleway, $150,000 to design the Windale Skate Park, and $200,000 of playing surface and fencing improvements at John Street Oval in Warners Bay. Newcastle council has forecast a $12 million

surplus for its budget, with plans to spend $297 million across the city. Some $9.7 million will be spent on roads, however costings for specific projects are not provided in the document. It also plans to spend $8 million on various Civic Theatre upgrades, $2.5 million to expand graduate, apprentice and trainee recruitment, and $1.5 million to improve development application processing. Maitland council will be working with a $164 million budget. Of the $30 million set aside for capital works, $12.6 million will go to the city’s roads including a $1.4 million reconstruction of Tocal Road in Bolwarra Heights, a $210,000 spend on rehabilitating sections of Telarah roads, and $620,000 of resurfacing work throughout Thornton. Other projects include a $311,000 spend on the Robins Oval grandstand amenities, $1.3 million for a full deck replacement of the Melville Ford Bridge and $120,000 to improve floodlighting at Lochinvar Oval.

Cessnock council’s budget, however, has predicted a $421,000 cash deficit after spending $74.6 million on operating expenses and $15.6 million in capital expenditure. A major road spend will see $3.2 million go to Gingers Lane and Orange Street in Abermain, while $611,000 will be spent on Camp Road in Greta and $181,000 on Butler Parade in Kurri Kurri. Community facilities will also receive work, with $84,000 going to toilet upgrades at North Cessnock Community Hall, and $85,000 for kitchen upgrades at Millfield Community Hall. A further $24,000 will be spent on the change rooms at Carmichael Park in Bellbird. Feedback on Maitland council’s budget will close on Wednesday 15 May; Newcastle’s on Friday 24 May; Lake Macquarie’s on Wednesday 29 May; and Cessnock’s on Wednesday 5 June. The Morpeth wastewater treatment plant

Recycled water is flowing to more than 1,100 homes in Chisholm and Gillieston Heights as part of Hunter Water’s first residential recycled water scheme. Purpose-built plants at Morpeth and Farley will treat the wastewater to be used for non-drinking purposes such as flushing toilets, machine washing clothes and watering the garden. It is estimated that the Maitland households will use approximately 40% less drinking water as a result of the change.

They will also save money – drinking water is charged at $2.30 per kilolitre, while recycled water is charged at $2 for the same unit. “This is expected to significantly reduce the amount of drinking water used at each property and, in turn, help preserve our water supplies,” Hunter Water Managing Director, Jim Bentley, said. More than 330 homes in Chisholm came online on Monday, while supply to 772 homes in Gillieston Heights will begin on Friday 31 May.

Ways to reduce water usage Water-saving techniques are currently being showcased at Maitland’s libraries. The Water Efficiency Display, funded by a $5,000 Hunter Water grant, aims to educate residents on water efficient fittings and how they can reduce water usage, in order to dispel the myth that the fittings are not appealing and come at a high cost. “We should all be looking at the way we use water and, where possible, implementing actions or changing fittings to reduce our water usage to conserve this important resource,” Maitland council’s development and environment manager, David Simm, said. “By simply shortening showers to a maximum of four minutes per person and only using the dishwasher or washing

machine when you have a full load to wash, your family could save thousands of litres of water and subsequently save money each year.” Residents can also win a $500 home plumbing upgrade to reduce the water usage and bills. Additionally, prize packs containing a trigger nozzle hose attachment, bucket and shower timer will be given away. To win the upgrade, entrants must be a Maitland resident or property owner and be willing to provide the council with a copy of their water bill before and after the works are completed. Entries can be made on-site at the display. The Water Efficiency Display will be at Rutherford Library until 13 May, Maitland Library from 13 to 20 May, and East Maitland Library from 20 to 27 May.

Savoury French toast with mushrooms BY MONIQUE CORMACK

120ml milk of choice 25g finely-grated parmesan cheese, plus extra to serve if desired 4 slices thick bread 200-250g mushrooms, sliced (cup or portobello mushrooms work well) Extra virgin olive oil, for frying Salt and pepper Small bunch chives Preheat oven to about 50°C; you can keep the toast and mushrooms in there to stay warm while you prepare everything. Whisk together eggs and milk, seasoning with a little salt and pepper. Pour mixture into a shallow dish so you can dip the bread in easily. Add in most of the parmesan cheese, reserving a little to sprinkle on the toast slices while they’re frying. Heat a non-stick pan to a moderate-to-low heat. Add 2 teaspoons of olive oil to the pan. Dip a slice of bread into the egg mixture, flipping it over so both sides are soaked. I like to let it sit

for about 15 seconds on each side, to make sure the egg mixture is soaked in. Pick up the bread and let the excess drip off for a moment. There should be some parmesan stuck to the bread. Pop the bread into the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, until dark golden brown. While the bread is cooking, sprinkle over some of the remaining parmesan so you get a lovely extra bit of crisped-up parmesan on the outside. If the bread browns too quickly, reduce the stove temperature. Repeat the cooking process with the remaining slices of bread and keep the slices in the oven to stay warm while you’re cooking. While the bread is cooking, take a second pan and add 2 teaspoons of olive oil. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until softened. Towards the end of the cooking process, season with salt, pepper and some chopped chives. Once everything is ready, serve the French toast with the sliced mushrooms on top, and garnish with extra chives. Add extra parmesan, and a little drizzle of olive oil, if desired.

Spread one side of half the bread slices with cranberry jelly and top with ham and camembert. Spread remaining bread with mustard and sandwich together. Grease a large, non-stick frying pan with butter and melt over medium heat. Dip 2 sandwiches into the egg mixture for about 15 seconds each side.

Add to pan and cook for 2-3 minutes each side or until golden brown. Transfer to an oven tray in the oven to keep warm. Repeat with remaining butter, egg mixture and sandwiches.

There’s nothing ruff about the Million Paws Walk. Next weekend, more than 500 people and pooches are expected to take to the Newcastle Foreshore for the RSPCA’s annual fundraising event, supporting their mission to prevent animal cruelty and care for animals. Last year, $308,000 was raised nationally. With the walk happening in a popular location, RSPCA NSW’s senior manager for Hunter Animal Care Services Debbie Jaggers is hoping that locals can contribute $10,000 this year. “Last year we were at the Newcastle Foreshore for the first time and it was great,” she said. “We do a two or four-kilometre walk towards Nobbys Head, and Foreshore Park is just beautiful.” The Million Paws Walk is the RSPCA’s biggest fundraiser. “What is not well known is that just 2% of our [RSPCA NSW] funding is from the state government,” Dr Jaggers said.

Trek to pay respect Courage. Endurance. Mateship. Sacrifice. These words are inscribed across four granite pillars at Isurava, a few hours’ walk from the village of Kokoda in Papua New Guinea. While millions of Australians paid tribute to the Diggers across the country on Anzac Day, Isurava was, for me and more than 100 other trekkers and porters, the site for our dawn service. A place of such peace and beauty, it’s hard to fathom the suffering and chaos that ensued when the Japanese launched a fullscale assault here on 27 August 1942. With ranks thinned and supplies short, the Australians fought on against overwhelming odds before being forced to withdraw on 30 August. The 39th and 2/14th Battalions, assisted by the men of the 2/16th, mounted a brave bayonet charge to break free. Those cut off behind enemy lines struggled for survival.

Some were captured or killed, others died of wounds or illness, while the rest kept up the long fighting withdrawal along the Kokoda Track. While Isurava was a notable Japanese victory, the enemy failed in its main aim – to destroy the Australian force. When our Kokoda Spirit group, made up of 13 trekkers and 26 porters, walked the 96-kilometre track over nine days from 17 to 26 April, there were times of struggle. Slipping and sliding through mud, over tree roots, creeks and rivers, and traversing up and down endless hills, it was, on many occasions, a lesson in concentration and determination. But, as we stopped to rest for a drink of water after another climb, I often found myself looking around the dense jungle and wondering how on Earth both sides fought a brutal war in conditions far, far worse than we encountered. the largest war cemetery in the Pacific. It lies near Port Moresby and contains 3,824 Commonwealth burials, 699 of them unidentified, from World War II. A harrowing start, but a sober reminder of the reason we were there. Day one and two consisted of gruelling walks – about seven and 11 hours respectively – followed by stops at Ua-Ule Creek and New Nauro campsites. The group then went on to reach the locations of Menari, Efogi 2, 1900, Eora Creek and Con’s Rock before making it to Isurava and, eventually, Kokoda. Upon reflection, two of the words on those pillars – endurance and mateship – were both key parts of our journey. For the other two – courage and sacrifice – we will be eternally grateful. Incorporate Pilates principles in the everyday Every year on the fi rst Saturday of May, Pilates instructors, lovers and enthusiasts around the world get together to celebrate the work of Joseph Pilates and move with purpose. If you missed it this year, read on to fi nd out a few ways to celebrate World Pilates Day, every day. Joseph Pilates believed that “physical fitness was the fi rst requisite of happiness”. He developed his series of exercises while interred in a prisoner of war camp in England during WWI and their popularity has steadily grown since then. His teachings are based on six key principles;

control, concentration, flow, centering, precision and most importantly, breath. All of his exercises encourage you to work from a strengthened core and to be mindful of how your body moves in space. My top tip when starting is to become more aware of your posture. Evenly distribute your weight between the balls and heels of your feet. Stack your pelvis, ribs and head on top of one another. Gently draw your head backwards, elongating the back of your neck. Aligning yourself will begin to affect change within days of making it a consistent part of your routine. My top three exercises are explained below.

Side lying glute lift

Lying on your back, place your feet flat on the ground, hip distance apart. Inhale to begin, exhale to roll your pubic bone towards your belly button and lift your bottom gently off the ground until just your shoulders remain. Repeat for 3 x 10 reps.

Begin on your hands and knees, toes tucked under feet. Inhale to begin, exhale and engage core, drawing the belly upwards while lifting the knees off the floor by just an inch. Hold for a count of three. Repeat for 2 x 10 reps.

Lying on your side, legs at 90-degree angle in front of you (knees in front of your hips and shins parallel with your torso). Inhale as you lift the whole leg as one unit to the ceiling. Exhale to lower with control. Keep your pelvis still. Repeat for 3 x 10 reps.

Now is the ideal time to make sure your insulation is up to par, so you can keep those winter drafts out and say snug until spring. A bit of time spent vacuuming your old insulation and installing new batts can make for a warmer, more comfortable house during the cooler months.

Floor polishers are a versatile machine that can help make your concrete or timber floors shine. Polishers come with a variety of pads to scrub, clean, buff and polish your floors. Simply mop the floor first, then use the floor polisher over the wet floor.

Sanding and sealing timber floors or grinding concrete floors is a job we often put off, but it can give your home a whole new lease of life. The cooler months can also be tough on floors as more grit and dirt gets tracked in, which can in turn lead to damaged surfaces.

A fresh coat of paint can give any room a lift or a completely new look. If you do it by hand using brush and roller, it’s a workout all by itself.

5. Tiling Give those tired-looking tiles a facelift or even give your kitchen

or bathroom a complete makeover. Tiling is a great cool-weather job that produces satisfying results for a day or two’s work. You can remove old tiles with a demolition hammer first. Light demolition hammers are perfect for wall tiles, or, if it’s floor tiles you’re taking up, you can use a heavy hammer mounted on a trolley for easy manoeuvrability.

6. Ceiling work Are those hard-to-reach windows and high ceilings looking a bit dusty? Now is a great time to get on top of those out-of-the-way places to brighten up your home and let a little light in. Remember: safety first when you’re working at any height.

PICK OF THE WEEK The Talented Mr Ripley Friday, SBS, 8.30pm, M (1999) An abundantly talented cast is poorly deployed in this over-ripe thriller. The key problem lies with Matt Damon’s (pictured) miscasting – he just doesn’t convince as nerdish American Tom Ripley, a sociopath with too many psychological problems to name, who ingratiates himself into a group of snobbish young high-ﬂyers and murders to attain the lifestyle he envies. It’s a pretty-looking picture, but scenes smack of pretension. The only real breath of fresh air comes from the wonderful Philip Seymour Hoffman.

As the evil Queen, Julia Roberts is ruthless, vain and determined to marry the wealthy Prince Alcott (Armie Hammer). Roberts steals the show but the real stars are production and costume designers Tom Foden and the late Eiko Ishioka, who have created such a magical, fanciful world that the story plays second ﬁddle.

Friday, GO!, 10pm, M (2010) After a little white lie about losing her virginity gets out, cleancut high school girl Olive (Emma Stone, pictured) sees her life parallelling the fallen Hester Prynne’s in the 19th-century novel The Scarlet Letter – until she decides to use the rumour mill to advance her social and ﬁnancial standing. Maintaining her chastity throughout the ﬁlm, Olive rakes in gifts and money for “pretending” to have sex with various nerds at school, who are also keen to improve their reputations. Stone is fantastic in the lead role and comedy gems are provided by Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as Olive’s quirky parents. Former teen favourite Amanda Bynes also stars as a religious nut.

After growing up on a farm in country Queensland, Mal decided he wanted to see the world. So, at 18, he joined the RAAF. Six years later, he had seen enough and joined the then Department of Civil Aviation. Mal worked at airports around Australia for about 20 years before joining a fledgling Flight Training School in Tamworth. Following this career path led to South Australia, where, in 2008, he joined the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. He retired to Swansea in 2014 and, looking for something interesting to do, joined Marine Rescue NSW. Holding ratings of SAR officer and Rescue Crewman, Mal became the Unit Commander in 2018.
